the_o ground_n into_o which_o it_o be_v cast_v if_o the_o ground_n be_v bad_a the_o seed_n perish_v if_o the_o ground_n be_v good_a it_o increase_v and_o because_o some_o man_n heart_n be_v as_o a_o barren_a ground_n and_o other_o man_n heart_n be_v as_o a_o fertile_a soil_n in_o some_o it_o yield_v no_o fruit_n at_o all_o in_o some_o it_o yield_v great_a abundance_n this_o difference_n may_v by_o see_v in_o each_o mix_a company_n and_o populous_a congregation_n to_o which_o we_o preach_v it_o be_v find_v among_o christ_n hearer_n it_o be_v find_v among_o the_o apostle_n hearer_n and_o may_v also_o be_v find_v among_o we_o the_o consideration_n whereof_o serve_v for_o the_o instruction_n both_o of_o preacher_n &_o people_n 1._o of_o preacher_n to_o comfort_v they_o and_o to_o encourage_v they_o in_o their_o labour_n when_o they_o see_v they_o unprofitable_a unto_o a_o great_a number_n christ_n speak_v this_o parable_n especial_o of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o hearer_n he_o teach_v the_o true_a word_n of_o god_n &_o in_o the_o best_a manner_n that_o may_v be_v yet_o do_v he_o not_o profit_v all_o his_o hearer_n he_o have_v 4._o sort_n whereof_o three_o be_v christ_n hearer_n be_v bad_a as_o appear_z by_o this_o parable_n and_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o many_o shall_v say_v we_o have_v eat_v 26._o and_o drink_v in_o thy_o presence_n and_o thou_o have_v teach_v in_o our_o street_n but_o he_o shall_v say_v i_o know_v you_o not_o depart_v from_o i_o all_o you_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n and_o the_o apostle_n say_v we_o be_v 16._o to_o some_o the_o but_o do_v not_o herein_o believe_v the_o father_n of_o lie_n believe_v christ_n who_o be_v the_o way_n the_o life_n and_o the_o truth_n he_o tell_v you_o that_o there_o be_v 3._o sort_n of_o hearer_n which_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v only_o one_o sort_n among_o 4._o shall_v be_v save_v and_o therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o what_o kind_n of_o hearer_n you_o be_v and_o do_v not_o cortent_n yourselves_o with_o that_o hear_n that_o shall_v not_o edify_v your_o soul_n now_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o several_a kind_n in_o particular_a and_o first_o let_v we_o see_v who_o be_v they_o which_o receive_v the_o seed_n on_o the_o highway_n some_o hearer_n be_v compare_v to_o such_o ground_n you_o know_v that_o if_o land_n lie_v by_o the_o highway_n side_n or_o a_o highway_n lie_v through_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o plough_v field_n some_o seed_n in_o the_o sow_a will_v fall_v on_o the_o highway_n and_o so_o be_v lose_v thereunto_o be_v some_o hearer_n compare_v and_o that_o very_o fit_o for_o first_o as_o the_o highway_n be_v not_o keep_v several_a and_o private_a but_o lie_v open_a and_o common_a to_o all_o traveller_n and_o passenger_n so_o these_o man_n heart_n be_v not_o enclose_v and_o keep_v several_a for_o heavenly_a thing_n but_o lie_v open_a to_o all_o tentation_n and_o suggestion_n of_o the_o devil_n to_o all_o enticement_n of_o the_o world_n and_o to_o all_o idle_a thought_n &_o vain_a imagination_n and_o that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o hear_v again_o as_o the_o highway_n be_v so_o tread_a and_o trample_v by_o the_o foot_n of_o passenger_n that_o it_o can_v cover_v the_o seed_n or_o if_o it_o shall_v cover_v the_o seed_n yet_o the_o trample_a will_n so_o harden_v the_o soil_n as_o the_o seed_n can_v never_o sprout_v so_o these_o man_n heart_n be_v so_o harden_v by_o wander_a thought_n both_o in_o and_o immediate_o after_o hear_v as_o the_o word_n can_v enter_v or_o at_o least_o can_v take_v any_o root_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o as_o corn_n sow_v in_o the_o highway_n will_v never_o yield_v crop_n like_o other_o ground_n so_o these_o hearer_n will_v never_o yield_v such_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n as_o 19_o other_o do_v but_o who_o be_v he_o grow_v in_o year_n 5._o the_o five_o degree_n of_o this_o temporary_a faith_n be_v outward_a profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n a_o man_n may_v have_v a_o historical_a or_o dogmatic_a faith_n yet_o never_o make_v profession_n of_o it_o as_o many_o of_o the_o chief_a 42._o ruler_n among_o the_o jew_n believe_v in_o christ_n but_o because_o of_o the_o pharisy_n do_v not_o confess_v he_o but_o they_o who_o have_v this_o temporary_a faith_n do_v profess_v christ_n as_o long_o as_o they_o keep_v it_o so_o do_v judas_n he_o call_v christ_n his_o master_n do_v follow_v he_o be_v content_a to_o which_o now_o have_v not_o faith_n never_o have_v bellarmine_n and_o other_o papist_n allege_v pasch_fw-mi this_o place_n to_o prove_v that_o true_a faith_n once_o have_v may_v be_v quite_o lose_v not_o here_o speak_v of_o the_o true_a justify_n faith_n of_o god_n elect_v but_o of_o the_o temporary_a faith_n which_o may_v be_v in_o the_o reprobate_n as_o have_v be_v show_v before_o and_o 13._o this_o be_v apparent_a out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o text_n for_o the_o person_n who_o thus_o believe_v be_v compare_v to_o stony_a ground_n who_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o which_o do_v enjoy_v they_o therefore_o seek_v especial_o for_o they_o a_o woeful_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o enjoy_v pleasure_n in_o this_o life_n which_o be_v but_o short_a and_o to_o endure_v pain_n in_o the_o other_o life_n which_o be_v eternal_a if_o you_o can_v be_v partaker_n of_o both_o together_o seek_v for_o the_o better_a make_v moses_n choice_n who_o refuse_v the_o delight_n of_o choke_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n even_o all_o these_o three_o mention_v before_o a_o man_n may_v as_o well_o be_v hinder_v by_o one_o of_o they_o as_o byan_a other_o as_o well_o by_o any_o one_o of_o they_o as_o by_o all_o of_o they_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a to_o find_v they_o all_o three_o in_o one_o &_o the_o same_o man_n a_o man_n may_v be_v much_o perplex_v with_o worldly_a care_n how_o to_o get_v and_o increase_v riches_n and_o when_o he_o have_v get_v they_o he_o may_v be_v deceive_v by_o they_o in_o think_v too_o high_o of_o they_o in_o love_v they_o too_o dear_o and_o trust_v too_o much_o unto_o they_o he_o may_v then_o also_o live_v in_o pleasure_n he_o may_v be_v careful_a to_o get_v riches_n and_o to_o increase_v they_o that_o so_o he_o may_v consume_v they_o on_o his_o own_o lust_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o worldly_a care_n and_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o his_o riches_n he_o may_v be_v spare_v and_o niggard-like_a in_o relieve_n of_o other_o yet_o in_o regard_n of_o voluptuousness_n he_o may_v spend_v much_o on_o himself_o that_o richman_n luke_n 12._o have_v much_o 19_o good_n lay_v up_o for_o himself_o for_o many_o year_n not_o any_o for_o other_o but_o all_o for_o himself_o and_o therefore_o he_o will_v live_v at_o ease_n eat_v drink_n and_o take_v his_o pastime_n and_o the_o rich_a glutton_n which_o will_v not_o 21._o give_v so_o much_o as_o the_o crumb_n that_o fall_v from_o his_o table_n to_o poor_a lazarus_n be_v give_v to_o pleasure_n &_o spend_v much_o on_o his_o own_o back_n &_o belly_n such_o man_n as_o these_o have_v many_o thorn_n grow_v in_o the_o field_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o have_v many_o impediment_n to_o hinder_v they_o in_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v profitable_a hearer_n and_o diligent_a practiser_n of_o the_o word_n the_o more_o thorn_n grow_v in_o a_o swoon_n field_n the_o less_o corn_n be_v reap_v at_o harvest_n so_o of_o all_o carnal_a hearer_n these_o yield_v the_o least_o fruit_n yet_o be_v these_o three_o thing_n distinguish_v one_o from_o another_o as_o be_v show_v before_o be_v oftentimes_o sever_v in_o their_o subject_n one_o of_o they_o may_v another_o after_o another_o manner_n and_o therefore_o any_o one_o of_o these_o be_v able_a of_o itself_o to_o hinder_v the_o fruitfulness_n of_o the_o word_n you_o know_v there_o be_v many_o kind_n of_o thorn_n with_o we_o there_o be_v white_a thorn_n and_o black_a thorn_n hawthorne_n and_o slowthorne_n and_o the_o word_n in_o the_o original_n be_v take_v not_o only_o akantha_n for_o thorn_n but_o likewise_o for_o briar_n and_o bramble_n and_o any_o thing_n that_o have_v prick_v and_o therefore_o as_o one_o kind_a of_o thorn_n if_o there_o be_v many_o of_o that_o kind_a may_v as_o well_o hinder_v the_o fruitfulness_n of_o your_o field_n as_o many_o kind_n so_o one_o kind_n of_o corrupt_a affection_n in_o your_o heart_n may_v hinder_v the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o word_n as_o well_o as_o many_o and_o therefore_o as_o when_o you_o plough_v and_o sow_v your_o ground_n you_o rid_v up_o not_o only_o one_o kind_n of_o thorn_n and_o briar_n but_o likewise_o all_o of_o each_o kind_n so_o when_o you_o hear_v the_o word_n expel_v out_o of_o your_o heart_n not_o only_o all_o bad_a affection_n of_o one_o kind_n but_o likewise_o all_o bad_a affection_n of_o each_o kind_n it_o be_v lamentable_a to_o see_v how_o fond_o people_n deceive_v themselves_o herein_o many_o man_n do_v harbour_v one_o noisome_a lust_n one_o corrupt_a affection_n or_o other_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o because_o they_o keep_v out_o many_o other_o they_o hope_v all_o be_v well_o with_o 45._o they_o the_o covetous_a worldling_n condemn_v the_o voluptuous_a epicure_n and_o the_o voluptuous_a epicure_n condemn_v the_o greedy_a and_o miserable_a worldling_n the_o covetous_a man_n think_v that_o he_o be_v a_o good_a christian_a because_o he_o be_v not_o give_v to_o prodigal_a licentiousness_n and_o the_o voluptuous_a man_n will_v be_v esteem_v a_o good_a hearer_n because_o he_o abhor_v worldly_a care_n and_o miserable_a covetousness_n but_o let_v they_o both_o know_v that_o either_o of_o these_o two_o sinful_a lust_n be_v sufficient_a to_o condemn_v their_o soul_n and_o let_v they_o not_o purge_v their_o heart_n from_o the_o one_o alone_o but_o from_o both_o together_o if_o they_o will_v be_v fit_a soil_n for_o the_o lord_n seed_n the_o last_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v in_o these_o hearer_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o their_o choke_n namely_o what_o be_v the_o issue_n and_o event_n that_o befall_v they_o when_o they_o be_v thus_o choke_v by_o those_o corrupt_a lust_n they_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n though_o they_o do_v not_o fall_v away_o from_o their_o profession_n as_o those_o hearer_n mention_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n but_o still_o continue_v professor_n and_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o be_v they_o unfruitful_a in_o their_o profession_n the_o original_a word_n do_v proper_o signify_v that_o they_o do_v not_o bring_v 〈◊〉_d forth_o any_o full_a and_o perfect_a any_o ripe_a and_o true_o fruit_n as_o if_o they_o may_v bring_v forth_o some_o kind_n of_o fruit_n yet_o no_o good_a fruit_n no_o full_a corn_n nor_o profitable_a gain_n corn_n sow_v among_o thorn_n may_v yield_v some_o kind_n of_o fruit_n yet_o not_o such_o as_o will_v please_v the_o husbandman_n it_o will_v be_v a_o untimely_a fruit_n it_o will_v wither_v away_o before_o it_o be_v thorough_o feed_v and_o full_o ripe_a it_o will_v be_v very_o thin_a on_o the_o ground_n when_o it_o be_v reap_v it_o will_v prove_v nothing_o but_o short_a ear_n and_o small_a gain_n and_o when_o it_o be_v thresh_v nothing_o but_o light_a corn_n and_o unprofitable_a such_o be_v the_o obedience_n of_o those_o man_n which_o be_v give_v to_o covetousness_n and_o voluptuousness_n they_o may_v perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n yet_o not_o many_o only_o such_o as_o do_v not_o hinder_v they_o in_o their_o worldly_a profit_n nor_o abridge_v they_o of_o their_o carnal_a pleasure_n and_o those_o which_o they_o do_v perform_v be_v very_o imperfect_a neither_o acceptable_a to_o god_n nor_o comfortable_a to_o their_o own_o soul_n they_o be_v not_o such_o as_o god_n exact_v they_o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o such_o sincerity_n of_o the_o heart_n neither_o be_v they_o direct_v to_o that_o right_a end_n neither_o be_v they_o perform_v in_o such_o a_o holy_a manner_n as_o he_o require_v though_o they_o seem_v to_o begin_v well_o yet_o their_o inward_a lust_n do_v so_o hinder_v they_o that_o they_o can_v bring_v their_o action_n to_o a_o due_a perfection_n but_o wax_v weary_a of_o do_v well_o and_o either_o quite_o cease_v from_o their_o enterprise_n begin_v or_o else_o efaint_a much_o in_o their_o proceed_n before_o they_o bring_v any_o thing_n to_o a_o good_a end_n whence_o first_o we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o nature_n quality_n and_o manner_n of_o their_o obedience_n who_o heart_n be_v still_o possess_v with_o the_o care_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n they_o may_v perform_v many_o good_a duty_n yet_o fail_v in_o some_o main_a duty_n and_o yet_o those_o which_o they_o perform_v can_v please_v the_o lord_n we_o have_v pregnant_a example_n hereof_o in_o the_o scripture_n naaman_n the_o syrian_a be_v cure_v of_o his_o leprosy_n by_o the_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o see_v and_o happy_a be_v our_o ear_n to_o hear_v those_o thing_n which_o we_o hear_v many_o righteous_a man_n will_v have_v be_v glad_a to_o have_v see_v and_o hear_v these_o hearer_n in_o particular_a we_o be_v to_o observe_v one_o thing_n in_o general_a and_o from_o the_o coherence_n to_o wit_n that_o although_o christ_n have_v diverse_a sort_n of_o hearer_n brethren_n in_o that_o division_n of_o the_o city_n though_o some_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n yet_o some_o be_v with_o the_o apostle_n and_o when_o he_o preach_v 34._o at_o athens_n some_o mock_v he_o for_o his_o doctrine_n of_o the_o resurrection_n some_o will_v hear_v he_o again_o as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o full_o resolve_v but_o desire_v to_o be_v further_o instruct_v yet_o certain_a man_n do_v cleave_v to_o paul_n &_o believe_v as_o denys_n a_o judge_n of_o mars_n street_n damaris_n a_o woman_n and_o other_o with_o they_o and_o thus_o it_o please_v god_n still_o to_o bless_v the_o sincere_o teach_v it_o will_v in_o time_n win_v some_o though_o some_o continue_v obstinate_a and_o remain_v as_o ignorant_a as_o popish_a and_o as_o profane_v as_o ever_o they_o be_v before_o they_o hear_v yet_o wisdom_n shall_v be_v iustify_v of_o her_o child_n as_o many_o as_o be_v ordain_v to_o eternal_a life_n shall_v believe_v some_o shall_v be_v call_v and_o by_o hear_v shall_v grow_v in_o knowledge_n in_o grace_n and_o obedience_n this_o may_v comfort_v and_o encourage_v we_o in_o our_o labour_n though_o it_o be_v some_o grief_n to_o see_v many_o non_fw-la proficient_o who_o hear_v which_o have_v corrupt_a heart_n it_o be_v loathsome_a terrible_a and_o unprofitable_a this_o shall_v teach_v every_o one_o of_o we_o 1._o to_o look_v to_o our_o heart_n and_o see_v that_o they_o be_v good_a that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v fruitful_a hearer_n husbandman_n have_v great_a care_n to_o make_v their_o ground_n good_a and_o fertile_a before_o they_o sow_v it_o if_o it_o be_v barren_a they_o will_v mark_v it_o they_o will_v set_v muck_n and_o dung_n on_o it_o to_o make_v it_o more_o fruitful_a as_o careful_a shall_v thou_o be_v to_o make_v thy_o heart_n good_a see_v it_o be_v the_o soil_n in_o which_o the_o lord_n heavenly_a seed_n must_v be_v sow_v if_o it_o be_v not_o good_a already_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o make_v it_o good_a pray_v earnest_o unto_o god_n that_o he_o will_v sanctify_v it_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o if_o it_o be_v good_a labour_v to_o make_v it_o better_o the_o better_a it_o be_v the_o more_o fruitful_a shall_v thy_o hear_n be_v and_o for_o this_o purpose_n hear_v the_o word_n often_o for_o it_o will_v make_v thy_o heart_n better_o the_o long_a that_o the_o ground_n of_o your_o field_n be_v till_v and_o sow_v the_o more_o bare_a and_o barren_a it_o will_v be_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o ground_n of_o your_o heart_n the_o often_o and_o the_o long_o they_o be_v sow_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n word_n the_o more_o fruitful_a will_v they_o be_v such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o heavenly_a seed_n that_o it_o will_v not_o make_v the_o ground_n more_o barren_a but_o more_o fertile_a by_o often_o sow_v as_o the_o seed_n be_v good_a that_o be_v sow_v in_o your_o heart_n so_o let_v the_o soil_n be_v make_v answerable_a unto_o it_o and_o then_o you_o need_v not_o to_o doubt_v of_o a_o plentiful_a increase_n let_v not_o so_o good_a seed_n be_v lose_v by_o light_v into_o bad_a soil_n hear_v with_o penitent_a heart_n with_o sanctify_a heart_n with_o believe_v heart_n with_o resolve_a heart_n to_o receive_v and_o obey_v whatsoever_o be_v teach_v out_o of_o the_o word_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v happy_a hearer_n 2._o furthermore_o we_o may_v hereby_o discern_v 2._o who_o have_v good_a heart_n who_o have_v bad_a it_o be_v the_o goodness_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o make_v the_o hearer_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n it_o be_v the_o corruption_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o hinder_v his_o fruitfulness_n those_o than_o that_o hear_v much_o and_o practice_v little_a have_v bad_a heart_n but_o those_o that_o hear_v and_o practice_v the_o word_n in_o their_o life_n have_v honest_a and_o good_a heart_n though_o none_o know_v the_o heart_n of_o another_o immediate_o and_o direct_o but_o god_n alone_o who_o be_v the_o only_a searcher_n of_o it_o yet_o as_o the_o physician_n can_v judge_v of_o the_o inward_a temperature_n of_o the_o body_n by_o the_o pulse_n and_o as_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o tree_n by_o the_o fruit_n so_o may_v we_o judge_v of_o the_o inward_a goodness_n and_o badness_n of_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o outward_a behaviour_n in_o the_o life_n and_o to_o keep_v i_o to_o the_o present_a comparison_n of_o this_o parable_n if_o a_o man_n know_v a_o field_n sow_v in_o a_o good_a sort_n with_o good_a seed_n yet_o afterward_o do_v see_v the_o corn_n to_o be_v thin_a and_o course_n and_o yield_v no_o good_a crop_n he_o will_v say_v the_o ground_n be_v barren_a but_o if_o he_o pass_v by_o a_o close_a towards_o harvest_n time_n and_o see_v the_o corn_n very_o thick_a and_o rank_a and_o bear_v a_o long_a ear_n full_a of_o corn_n he_o will_v say_v it_o be_v good_a land_n so_o if_o we_o know_v people_n to_o be_v well_o teach_v and_o yet_o yield_v little_a obedience_n in_o their_o life_n we_o may_v just_o suspect_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o before_o god_n but_o if_o we_o see_v they_o reform_v their_o life_n according_a to_o the_o word_n avoid_v those_o sin_n which_o it_o forbid_v and_o practice_v those_o duty_n which_o it_o commend_v and_o that_o in_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o their_o conversation_n we_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v honest_a and_o good_a if_o therefore_o you_o will_v have_v other_o to_o think_v that_o you_o have_v honest_a and_o good_a heart_n show_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n in_o your_o life_n the_o second_o special_a property_n in_o these_o hearer_n be_v their_o keep_n of_o the_o word_n they_o do_v not_o only_o receive_v it_o with_o their_o heart_n and_o lay_v it_o up_o in_o the_o bottom_n of_o they_o but_o likewise_o there_o they_o keep_v it_o fast_o they_o will_v not_o let_v it_o go_v locum_fw-la out_o thence_o nor_o suffer_v any_o to_o take_v it_o from_o they_o the_o original_a word_n as_o some_o have_v observe_v be_v very_o emphatical_a and_o import_v a_o keep_n with_o much_o labour_n and_o difficulty_n and_o so_o fit_o express_v the_o manner_n of_o their_o keep_n which_o be_v with_o strive_v and_o struggle_v against_o their_o own_o corruption_n against_o satan_n suggestion_n and_o against_o the_o world_n allurement_n though_o all_o conspire_v and_o join_v their_o force_n together_o yet_o do_v they_o keep_v it_o
so_o shall_v you_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v they_o for_o ever_o wherefore_o be_v careful_a to_o use_v these_o mean_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o people_n hear_v much_o and_o keep_v little_a but_o be_v like_a to_o bottomless_a barrel_n which_o let_v water_n run_v out_o as_o fast_o as_o it_o be_v pour_v in_o that_o of_o all_o the_o sermon_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v in_o their_o whole_a life_n time_n they_o have_v scarce_o the_o abridgement_n of_o one_o leave_v in_o their_o heart_n or_o head_n for_o their_o direction_n and_o consolation_n but_o even_o because_o they_o have_v neglect_v these_o mean_n use_v they_o hereafter_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v how_o well_o they_o will_v make_v you_o able_a to_o keep_v that_o which_o you_o hear_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n the_o three_o and_o last_o property_n in_o these_o hearer_n be_v this_o they_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n and_o this_o be_v another_o special_a difference_n betwixt_o they_o and_o all_o the_o rest_n for_o the_o rest_n either_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n at_o all_o as_o the_o first_o sort_n or_o but_o for_o a_o time_n as_o the_o second_o or_o imperfect_a fruit_n and_o in_o some_o thing_n only_o as_o the_o three_o but_o these_o bring_v forth_o not_o for_o a_o while_n but_o continual_o not_o in_o some_o thing_n only_o but_o in_o all_o and_o that_o type_n and_o perfect_a fruit_n if_o good_a seed_n be_v sow_v in_o good_a ground_n it_o usual_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n for_o the_o use_n of_o they_o which_o owe_v it_o and_o sow_v it_o so_o if_o some_o doctrine_n be_v preach_v and_o people_n hear_v it_o with_o good_a heart_n it_o will_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o their_o life_n these_o fruit_n be_v bring_v forth_o not_o by_o profession_n but_o by_o practice_n and_o do_v consist_v not_o so_o much_o in_o word_n as_o in_o deed_n and_o therefore_o paul_n pray_v that_o the_o philippian_n may_v be_v fill_v with_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n and_o that_o the_o colossian_n may_v please_v god_n in_o all_o 11_o thing_n be_v fruitful_a in_o all_o good_a work_n and_o he_o say_v of_o the_o roman_n that_o they_o 10._o be_v free_v from_o sin_n and_o make_v seruaant_n unto_o god_n have_v their_o fruit_n in_o holiness_n so_o that_o this_o fruit_n can_v 22._o be_v understand_v of_o the_o reward_n which_o the_o saint_n receive_v in_o heaven_n but_o of_o the_o obedience_n which_o they_o perform_v on_o earth_n for_o that_o be_v a_o fruit_n which_o they_o receyve_v this_o be_v a_o fruit_n which_o they_o bring_v forth_o that_o they_o receive_v from_o god_n this_o they_o yield_v unto_o god_n that_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o glory_n this_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o grace_n see_v then_o the_o disposition_n of_o these_o good_a hearer_n they_o do_v not_o only_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o their_o ear_n and_o understand_v it_o with_o their_o mind_n and_o keep_v it_o in_o their_o heart_n but_o they_o do_v also_o practice_v it_o in_o their_o life_n this_o be_v the_o chief_a end_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n therefore_o do_v they_o hear_v it_o and_o learn_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o in_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o may_v order_v their_o life_n by_o it_o and_o practice_v it_o when_o occasion_n be_v offer_v happy_a be_v all_o those_o which_o thus_o hear_v for_o as_o james_n say_v who_o so_o look_v into_o 25_o the_o perfect_a law_n of_o liberty_n and_o continue_v therein_o he_o not_o be_v a_o forgetful_a hearer_n but_o a_o doer_n of_o the_o work_n shall_v be_v bless_v in_o his_o deed_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v have_v your_o hear_n to_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o comfortable_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n let_v it_o end_v in_o obedience_n ground_n that_o be_v sow_v with_o good_a seed_n though_o it_o shoot_v forth_o a_o broad_a and_o rank_a blade_n will_v not_o content_v the_o owner_n unless_o it_o bring_v forth_o a_o good_a crop_n no_o more_o can_v you_o please_v the_o lord_n by_o hear_v understand_v and_o profess_v the_o word_n unless_o therewithal_o you_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n of_o obedience_n in_o your_o life_n all_o the_o knowledge_n and_o learning_n that_o man_n can_v possible_o have_v in_o any_o art_n or_o science_n be_v nothing_o worth_a without_o practice_n and_o can_v you_o think_v that_o your_o knowledge_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n will_v profit_v you_o any_o whit_n without_o practice_n and_o indeed_o we_o learn_v no_o more_o than_o we_o practise_v as_o that_o pambo_n acknowledge_v who_o hear_v the_o first_o verse_n of_o the_o 39_o psalm_n i_o say_v i_o will_v take_v heed_n to_o my_o 18._o way_n lest_o i_o offend_v with_o my_o tongue_n confess_v that_o he_o have_v not_o learn_v it_o in_o many_o year_n because_o he_o have_v not_o in_o many_o year_n attain_v to_o the_o right_a practice_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v be_v careful_a to_o bring_v forth_o these_o fruit_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o first_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n because_o they_o serve_v for_o his_o glory_n therefore_o say_v de_fw-fr christ_n to_o his_o disciple_n herein_o be_v 8._o my_o fathet_z glorify_v that_o you_o bear_v much_o fruit_n and_o therefore_o paul_n pray_v that_o the_o be_v not_o the_o fruit_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o lord_n may_v say_v to_o they_o that_o bring_v forth_o such_o fruit_n who_o require_v these_o thing_n at_o your_o hand_n these_o thing_n as_o the_o themselves_o those_o be_v hinder_v in_o their_o perseverance_n and_o fruitfulness_n through_o the_o want_n of_o good_a these_o through_o the_o have_v of_o evil_n even_o sinful_a lust_n and_o bad_a affection_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o like_a thorn_n choke_v the_o word_n which_o they_o hear_v those_o renounce_v their_o profession_n these_o keep_v their_o profession_n and_o yet_o be_v unfruitful_a these_o hearer_n be_v not_o all_o alike_o for_o though_o the_o word_n be_v choke_v in_o they_o all_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o choke_v in_o all_o by_o the_o same_o cause_n &_o mean_n in_o some_o it_o be_v choke_v by_o worldly_a care_n in_o other_o by_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o riches_n and_o in_o the_o rest_n by_o voluptuousness_n and_o therefore_o touch_v these_o hearer_n we_o may_v observe_v some_o thing_n in_o general_a which_o concern_v they_o all_o joint_o together_o and_o some_o thing_n in_o particular_a which_o concern_v they_o several_o the_o thing_n in_o general_n which_o concern_v they_o all_o be_v two_o whereof_o the_o one_o respect_v the_o time_n of_o their_o choke_n the_o other_o respect_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o choke_n 1._o the_o time_n of_o their_o choke_n for_o it_o be_v say_v of_o they_o that_o when_o they_o have_v hear_v gontai_fw-fr and_o be_v depart_v or_o go_v their_o way_n they_o be_v choke_v etc._n etc._n they_o be_v not_o choke_v while_o they_o their_o heart_n be_v set_v as_o thorny_a ground_n may_v have_v some_o good_a moist_a mould_n and_o depth_n of_o soil_n and_o cause_v the_o seed_n sow_v in_o it_o to_o sprout_v and_o come_v up_o but_o afterward_o will_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o prosper_v the_o thorn_n in_o time_n will_v choke_v it_o so_o may_v a_o man_n hear_v the_o word_n reverent_o and_o attentive_o mark_v it_o careful_o and_o receive_v it_o willing_o yea_o he_o may_v take_v it_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n indeed_o and_o the_o only_a word_n that_o must_v save_v his_o soul_n he_o may_v wish_v that_o he_o be_v able_a they_o hear_v and_o yet_o afterward_o when_o they_o be_v go_v away_o and_o betake_v themselves_o to_o their_o worldly_a affair_n lose_v the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o word_n and_o become_v transgressor_n of_o it_o these_o be_v unprofitable_a hearer_n the_o word_n which_o they_o hear_v will_v not_o save_v their_o soul_n man_n may_v often_o hear_v after_o this_o manner_n and_o yet_o never_o come_v to_o heaven_n do_v not_o therefore_o content_v yourselves_o with_o these_o present_a motion_n while_o you_o be_v in_o hear_v but_o let_v they_o continue_v and_o show_v their_o efficacy_n after_o you_o hearer_n both_o good_a and_o bad_a and_o they_o all_o hear_v one_o and_o the_o same_o doctrine_n though_o not_o after_o one_o and_o the_o same_o manner_n nor_o with_o the_o like_a efficacy_n and_o be_v good_a each_o way_n both_o outward_o before_o man_n manifest_v itself_o to_o be_v good_a by_o open_a profession_n by_o abundance_n of_o fruit_n and_o by_o constant_a perseverance_n and_o also_o inward_o in_o itself_o and_o before_o god_n by_o a_o sincere_a sanctification_n and_o holy_a disposition_n and_o so_o their_o heart_n differ_v from_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o former_a hearer_n for_o though_o they_o in_o receyve_v the_o worde_n with_o joy_n in_o believe_v it_o and_o bring_v forth_o some_o fruit_n of_o it_o do_v make_v some_o fair_a show_n and_o give_v some_o outward_a sign_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o effectual_o sanctify_v within_o and_o they_o make_v those_o fair_a show_n but_o for_o a_o time_n afterwards_o they_o revolt_a in_o time_n of_o tentation_n or_o fail_v in_o their_o fruit_n through_o worldly_a care_n and_o voluptuousness_n bewray_v the_o filthiness_n of_o their_o heart_n those_o than_o that_o will_v be_v good_a hearer_n must_v so_o will_v the_o hear_n be_v good_a meet_a will_v not_o nourish_v that_o man_n body_n who_o have_v a_o bad_a stomach_n that_o can_v well_o
offend_v he_o 2._o again_o as_o some_o have_v err_v in_o take_v those_o to_o be_v fruit_n which_o be_v not_o so_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n some_o have_v err_v in_o take_v those_o to_o be_v no_o fruit_n which_o indeed_o be_v good_a fruit_n know_v you_o that_o the_o practice_n of_o every_o duty_n command_v in_o the_o word_n be_v good_a fruit_n notwithstanding_o as_o there_o be_v diverse_a kind_n of_o seed_n some_o of_o one_o grain_n some_o of_o another_o &_o also_o diverse_a kind_n of_o fruit_n some_o of_o one_o grain_n some_o of_o another_o so_o there_o be_v diverse_a kind_n of_o
