3_o because_o the_o baptism_n of_o affliction_n may_v or_o may_v not_o be_v it_o be_v no_o duty_n or_o ordinance_n for_o any_o man_n to_o throw_v himself_o into_o it_o but_o a_o duty_n when_o lawful_o call_v to_o it_o and_o esteem_v as_o a_o mercy_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o but_o as_o there_o be_v but_o one_o baptism_n of_o water_n so_o a_o union_n herein_o be_v necessary_a to_o a_o right_a church-communion_n without_o which_o there_o can_v be_v in_o the_o body_n of_o the_o church_n one_o sort_n of_o member_n â—nd_v so_o the_o body_n can_v be_v one_o in_o the_o head_n 6thly_a one_o god_n and_o father_n of_o all_o who_o be_v above_o all_o and_o through_o all_o and_o in_o you_o all._n now_o where_o there_o be_v a_o unity_n in_o these_o principal_a thing_n viz._n one_o spirit_n unite_n this_o one_o body_n one_o hope_n one_o lord_n jesus_n one_o baptism_n one_o god_n and_o father_n of_o all_o etc._n etc._n there_o be_v a_o ground_n for_o church-communion_n in_o all_o the_o thing_n of_o jesus_n christ_n if_o other_o matter_n of_o scandal_n in_o conversation_n do_v not_o just_o prevent_v eph._n 5._o 5_o to_o 12._o our_o lord_n sum_v up_o the_o fundamental_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n in_o a_o narrow_a compass_n joh._n 17._o 3._o and_o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a that_o they_o know_v thou_o the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n who_o thou_o have_v send_v which_o doubtless_o include_v the_o whole_a of_o faith_n and_o practice_n necessary_a unto_o life_n eternal_a and_o mar._n 16._o 16._o he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v that_o be_v he_o that_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o lord_n in_o the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v save_v of_o which_o obedience_n baptism_n be_v the_o first_o and_o a_o usher_n to_o all_o other_o part_n of_o obedience_n and_o that_o which_o by_o the_o gospel-law_n put_v person_n under_o the_o promise_n of_o salvation_n and_o give_v they_o a_o right_a to_o orderly_a church-communion_n so_o that_o i_o infer_v from_o the_o premise_n that_o according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o scripture_n and_o law_n of_o christ_n nothing_o shall_v prevent_v those_o that_o be_v unite_v in_o the_o faith_n and_o
baptism_n of_o christ_n walk_v according_o thereunto_o from_o fellowship_n in_o all_o the_o ordinance_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o church_n and_o true_o i_o do_v fear_n that_o it_o have_v be_v the_o great_a sin_n and_o miscarriage_n of_o christian_n to_o make_v other_o thing_n as_o their_o own_o private_a opinion_n too_o much_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o church-communion_n which_o have_v be_v one_o cause_n of_o many_o breach_n among_o christian_n and_o church_n and_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o almost_o so_o many_o opinion_n so_o many_o church_n which_o give_v occasion_n of_o stumble_v to_o some_o and_o to_o other_o to_o triumph_v and_o say_v ahah_a so_o will_v we_o have_v it_o a_o wonderful_a sin_n and_o shame_v it_o be_v and_o as_o these_o be_v the_o ground_n so_o they_o be_v the_o bound_n of_o gospel-church-communion_n i_o see_v not_o how_o we_o may_v by_o the_o gospel-law_n go_v without_o these_o bound_n in_o gospel-church-fellowship_n and_o communion_n in_o the_o church-ordinance_n and_o privilege_n of_o jesus_n christ_n chap._n ii_o of_o lay_v on_o of_o hand_n on_o all_o baptise_a believer_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o speak_v something_o to_o those_o several_a person_n and_o church_n separate_v and_o distinguish_v according_a to_o their_o several_a opinion_n that_o may_v tend_v to_o moderate_v in_o this_o matter_n as_o for_o baptism_n it_o be_v almost_o general_o grant_v to_o be_v a_o indispensible_a ordinance_n of_o christ_n in_o order_n to_o visible-church-communion_n or_o a_o visible_a give_v up_o ourselves_o to_o god_n after_o believe_v i_o shall_v therefore_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o all_o who_o own_o jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v their_o saviour_n and_o lord_n do_v own_o baptism_n in_o water_n to_o be_v his_o holy_a ordinance_n and_o none_o will_v deny_v it_o to_o follow_v faith_n according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n though_o too_o many_o practice_n the_o contrary_a as_o to_o the_o subject_n viz._n take_v infant_n instead_o of_o believer_n the_o first_o i_o shall_v speak_v unto_o be_v those_o who_o practise_v imposition_n of_o hand_n on_o all_o baptise_a believer_n as_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n and_o on_o this_o ground_n separate_v from_o all_o who_o in_o conscience_n can_v so_o act_v with_o they_o and_o for_o such_o i_o have_v see_v several_a of_o their_o write_n and_o have_v some_o converse_n with_o some_o of_o they_o some_o more_o moderate_a and_o some_o more_o rigid_a some_o make_v it_o a_o ground_n of_o separation_n and_o some_o not_z the_o ground_n i_o find_v on_o which_o that_o practice_n be_v state_v be_v that_o of_o heb._n 6._o 1_o 2._o and_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o apostle_n act._n 8._o 17_o and_o 19_o 6._o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o discourse_v this_o matter_n with_o all_o the_o clearness_n and_o moderation_n i_o can_v to_o the_o intent_n that_o all_o gracious_a soul_n may_v at_o least_o see_v the_o little_a ground_n there_o be_v to_o make_v breach_n and_o separation_n about_o it_o though_o i_o do_v exceed_o own_o tenderness_n of_o conscience_n to_o god-ward_o in_o all_o his_o will._n 1._o as_o for_o heb._n 6._o 1_o 2._o from_o whence_o i_o suppose_v be_v several_a mistake_v urge_v in_o this_o matter_n as_o first_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v the_o only_a design_n of_o the_o apostle_n herein_a to_o state_n the_o ground_n and_o bound_n of_o church-communion_n though_o it_o be_v so_o that_o most_o of_o the_o thing_n here-mentitioned_n be_v the_o great_a matter_n of_o faith_n and_o practice_n yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o it_o be_v rather_o let_v the_o church_n to_o know_v that_o if_o they_o draw_v back_o and_o fall_v away_o there_o be_v no_o renew_n of_o they_o to_o those_o thing_n again_o and_o therefore_o though_o they_o be_v very_o much_o degenerate_v as_o be_v apparent_a chap._n 5._o 12._o the_o apostle_n will_v leave_v these_o thing_n and_o not_o teach_v they_o anew_o but_o go_v on_o to_o perfection_n that_o be_v go_v on_o to_o teach_v they_o further_o gospel-truths_n as_o vers_n 3_o 4_o 5_o 6._o chap._n 5_o 10_o 11._o 8_o 7._o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o epistle_n do_v demonstrate_v the_o second_o mistake_n be_v in_o so_o frequent_o call_v those_o thing_n foundation_n and_o foundation-principle_n to_o be_v all_o alike_o practise_v in_o all_o age_n of_o the_o church_n whereas_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o alone_a foundation_n 1_o cor._n 3._o 11._o and_o this_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o text_n it_o say_v not_o repentance_n faith_n and_o baptism_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v the_o foundation_n but_o not_o lay_v again_o the_o foundation_n of_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v christ_n jesus_n he_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o repentance_n etc._n etc._n for_o without_o he_o there_o be_v no_o ground_n for_o any_o of_o these_o nor_o for_o our_o acceptation_n therein_o it_o be_v all_o found_v in_o he_o therefore_o the_o scripture_n say_v not_o laying_z of_o these_o thing_n as_o the_o foundation_n but_o not_o lay_v again_o the_o foundation_n of_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v christ_n jesus_n and_o by_o reason_n of_o this_o mistake_n man_n persuade_v themselves_o and_o other_o that_o not_o to_o come_v up_o full_o and_o practical_o in_o all_o these_o beginning-word_n be_v to_o take_v away_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o building_n by_o reason_n of_o which_o it_o must_v needs_o fall_n a_o three_o mistake_n be_v that_o the_o beginning-thing_n the_o apostle_n do_v be_v indispensible_o to_o be_v practise_v in_o the_o church_n throughout_o all_o age_n and_o from_o hence_o because_o the_o apostle_n practise_v this_o of_o imposition_n of_o hand_n it_o must_v continue_v as_o a_o ordinance_n in_o the_o church_n of_o the_o same_o authority_n and_o continuance_n as_o baptism_n and_o hence_o separate_v from_o those_o who_o in_o their_o notion_n come_v not_o to_o the_o same_o faith_n and_o practice_n now_o that_o this_o be_v a_o mere_a mistake_n and_o that_o there_o be_v beginning-thing_n practise_v by_o the_o apostle_n of_o which_o this_o be_v one_o as_o will_v in_o its_o place_n appear_v which_o be_v not_o practicable_a by_o we_o be_v most_o evident_a for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o it_o will_v set_v all_o a-seeking_a and_o not_o find_v to_o instance_n the_o apostle_n do_v many_o miracle_n and_o some_o of_o they_o be_v by_o imposition_n of_o hand_n act._n 9_o 17_o 18._o &_o 28._o 8._o if_o we_o hence_o reason_n as_o some_o do_v that_o there_o be_v now_o no_o true_a minister_n but_o such_o as_o can_v do_v such_o miracle_n there_o will_v be_v no_o ministry_n at_o all_o and_o so_o no_o church_n and_o we_o may_v all_o go_v a-seeking_a and_o not_o find_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o gospel-ministration_n there_o be_v such_o variety_n of_o gift_n in_o the_o church_n as_o now_o be_v not_o 1_o cor._n 12._o 28_o 29._o and_o if_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o these_o gift_n be_v in_o the_o church_n at_o all_o time_n then_o now_o there_o can_v be_v no_o church_n and_o they_o that_o so_o affirm_v be_v justify_v but_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v that_o the_o gospel-church_n intend_v one_o and_o the_o same_o church-state_n from_o first_o to_o last_o as_o the_o state_n of_o the_o jewish_a church_n be_v and_o be_v sometime_o more_o and_o sometime_o less_o glorious_a from_o variety_n and_o occasion_n so_o that_o the_o apostle_n and_o gift_n and_o miracle_n be_v for_o we_o as_o well_o as_o they_o and_o be_v as_o true_o we_o as_o they_o be_v the_o same_o church-state_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o need_n for_o those_o first_o miracle_n and_o gift_n to_o continue_v and_o to_o be_v repeat_v over_o in_o every_o age_n relative_a to_o the_o church_n than_o be_v of_o moses_n in_o person_n and_o those_o amaze_a miracle_n from_o mount_n sinai_n to_o be_v repeat_v over_o in_o every_o generation_n after_o by_o all_o which_o it_o appear_v that_o all_o the_o beginning-word_n and_o work_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n be_v not_o essential_a to_o the_o church-state_n in_o every_o generation_n but_o some_o of_o they_o only_o to_o be_v believe_v but_o not_o practise_v because_o it_o can_v be_v of_o which_o this_o will_v appear_v to_o be_v one_o a_o four_o mistake_n be_v in_o so_o positive_o affirm_v that_o the_o imposition_n of_o hand_n in_o this_o scripture_n be_v and_o must_v be_v intend_v 1._o of_o that_o on_o all_o believer_n as_o such_o be_v baptise_a 2._o to_o be_v do_v as_o a_o ordinance_n of_o christ_n of_o constant_a and_o universal_a practice_n as_o be_v baptism_n to_o these_o several_z conscionable_a doubt_n may_v be_v make_v as_o 1._o whether_o imposition_n of_o hand_n on_o believer_n as_o such_o be_v at_o all_o intend_a in_o this_o scripture_n and_o that_o 1._o because_o we_o do_v not_o find_v lay_v on_o of_o hand_n on_o believer_n as_o such_o at_o all_o practise_v in_o that_o church_n and_o for_o we_o to_o conclude_v that_o
intend_v the_o baptism_n of_o gift_n as_o one_o which_o i_o dare_v be_v bold_a to_o say_v no_o man_n on_o earth_n have_v so_o that_o if_o there_o be_v a_o baptism_n among_o these_o beginning-thing_n which_o no_o man_n on_o earth_n have_v attain_v and_o the_o end_n of_o the_o apostle_n lay_v on_o of_o hand_n be_v in_o order_n to_o this_o baptism_n and_o no_o man_n can_v attain_v it_o without_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o church_n in_o present_a be_v without_o it_o so_o may_v there_o be_v as_o true_o a_o church_n without_o lay_v on_o of_o hand_n which_o be_v in_o order_n to_o it_o for_o the_o form_n add_v nothing_o without_o the_o power_n especial_o in_o this_o case_n where_o the_o formal_a act_n be_v use_v only_o in_o way_n of_o power_n and_o for_o person_n to_o lay_v on_o hand_n to_o such_o a_o end_n who_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n themselves_o seem_v altogether_o scriptureless_a and_o reasonless_a and_o what_o be_v say_v in_o this_o matter_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o author_n both_o ancient_a and_o modern_a prove_v nothing_o it_o be_v know_v that_o the_o apostasy_n be_v enter_v timely_a into_o the_o church_n and_o have_v make_v so_o great_a a_o alteration_n and_o change_v from_o the_o primitive_a rule_n and_o power_n that_o although_o there_o be_v something_o like_o the_o truth_n yet_o the_o true_a form_n and_o power_n of_o truth_n be_v lose_v the_o lord_n help_v his_o people_n that_o in_o their_o come_n out_o they_o bring_v away_o none_o of_o babylon_n device_n with_o they_o which_o i_o great_o fear_v they_o be_v too_o much_o incline_v unto_o but_o to_o conclude_v this_o matter_n from_o all_o these_o consideration_n i_o must_v say_v that_o i_o dare_v not_o meddle_v with_o this_o have_v no_o authority_n from_o the_o lord_n for_o it_o i_o can_v do_v it_o in_o his_o name_n without_o his_o authority_n lest_o my_o act_n shall_v be_v of_o the_o same_o kind_n as_o those_o act._n 19_o 13_o to_o 16._o these_o thing_n have_v i_o mind_v in_o general_a not_o meddle_v with_o particular_a answer_n to_o any_o man_n argument_n for_o it_o not_o doubt_v but_o if_o what_o i_o have_v say_v be_v serious_o consider_v it_o may_v set_v a_o stop_n on_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o who_o have_v prosecute_v this_o practice_n to_o separation_n from_o their_o brethren_n and_o caution_n other_o that_o they_o be_v not_o over_o rash_a in_o rush_v into_o this_o extreme_a so_o that_o it_o be_v issue_n may_v tend_v to_o and_o effect_n peace_n which_o be_v all_o my_o design_n in_o this_o matter_n chap._n iii_o treat_v on_o the_o seaventh-day_n sabbath_n other_o make_v a_o breach_n and_o separation_n about_o the_o seaventh-day_n sabbath_n suppose_v that_o to_o be_v the_o day_n and_o the_o only_a day_n command_v of_o god_n for_o gospel_n rest_v and_o worship_n and_o hence_o make_v a_o breach_n and_o separation_n from_o all_o that_o be_v not_o of_o their_o opinion_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o in_o what_o i_o shall_v offer_v to_o consideration_n in_o this_o case_n i_o shall_v not_o meddle_v to_o answer_v any_o man_n particular_a ground_n for_o it_o because_o it_o be_v not_o controversy_n i_o design_v but_o healing_n i_o shall_v to_o this_o end_n present_v some_o weighty_a consideration_n about_o this_o matter_n which_o if_o well_o weigh_v may_v if_o not_o answer_v all_o moderate_v the_o spirit_n of_o those_o who_o be_v so_o high_a in_o prosecution_n thereof_o and_o caution_n other_o of_o be_v too_o forward_o in_o rush_v thereinto_o which_o be_v my_o only_a design_n in_o write_v this._n first_o then_o i_o offer_v this_o that_o the_o seventh-day_n sabbath_n be_v nor_o be_v no_o moral_a precept_n but_o a_o institute_v ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o so_o subject_a to_o be_v change_v at_o the_o will_n of_o the_o institutor_n or_o have_v a_o end_n as_o all_o other_o mere_o institute_v ordinance_n be_v i_o know_v there_o be_v variety_n of_o opinion_n about_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n moral_a but_o that_o which_o i_o intend_v be_v in_o two_o thing_n which_o be_v enough_o for_o the_o case_n in_o hand_n 1._o if_o moral_a it_o must_v be_v so_o as_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n viz._n that_o which_o man_n by_o nature_n with_o the_o teach_n of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n without_o any_o other_o revelation_n or_o institution_n may_v attain_v unto_o man_n by_o nature_n with_o those_o help_n might_n and_o do_v come_v to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n rom._n 1._o 19_o 20_o 21._o and_o so_o by_o the_o same_o light_n and_o law_n may_v know_v that_o this_o god_n must_v be_v worship_v &_o that_o there_o must_v be_v time_n for_o that_o worship_n but_o that_o this_o time_n must_v be_v the_o seventh-day_n be_v not_o write_v in_o nature_n book_n and_o therefore_o in_o this_o sense_n not_o moral_a and_o that_o it_o do_v not_o teach_v the_o seventh-day_n sabbath_n not_o only_a reason_n tell_v we_o it_o can_v not_o but_o it_o be_v evident_a it_o do_v not_o teach_v any_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o sabbath_n either_o good_a or_o bad_a in_o the_o world_n till_o it_o be_v institute_v by_o god_n and_o command_v as_o i_o shall_v in_o its_o place_n demonstrate_v or_o 2._o it_o must_v be_v moral_a as_o perpetual_a and_o that_o it_o can_v be_v for_o there_o will_v be_v no_o keep_v of_o seventh-day_n sabbath_n in_o glory_n but_o it_o shall_v be_v all_o one_o perpetual_a rest_n of_o the_o sabbath_n be_v and_o be_v moral_a and_o shall_v be_v perpetual_a 2._o it_o be_v very_o probable_a that_o the_o seven_o day_n sabbath_n be_v neither_o institute_v nor_o observe_v
