they_o take_v that_o for_o error_n which_o be_v truth_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o such_o that_o they_o speak_v lie_n in_o hypocrisy_n these_o word_n there_o be_v no_o deceit_n in_o his_o mouth_n look_v to_o both_o especial_o to_o the_o last_o that_o be_v the_o doctrinal_a deceit_n of_o corrupt_a teach_v whereof_o he_o be_v free_a altogether_o i_o say_v it_o look_v especial_o to_o that_o because_o he_o be_v callumniate_v traduce_v and_o call_v a_o deceiver_n of_o people_n that_o be_v as_o if_o the_o prophet_n have_v say_v most_o untrue_a of_o he_o there_o be_v no_o deceitful_a and_o he_o be_v hold_v forth_o for_o a_o example_n to_o we_o in_o both_o that_o which_o we_o will_v say_v further_o on_o this_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o word_n of_o use_n where_o we_o may_v clear_v both_o the_o branch_n of_o the_o doctrine_n to_o meet_v with_o two_o exceed_a prejudicial_a tenet_n among_o men._n 1._o there_o be_v some_o who_o if_o they_o be_v not_o erroneous_a in_o their_o and_o divide_v godliness_n they_o will_v not_o be_v papist_n puritan_n nor_o sectary_n but_o there_o be_v much_o unholinesse_n in_o their_o practice_n much_o self-seeking_a pride_n hypocrisy_n formality_n deceive_v cozen_a falsehood_n and_o they_o cover_v all_o with_o this_o that_o they_o be_v sound_v as_o to_o their_o profession_n though_o only_o hear_v and_o not_o do_v profess_v and_o not_o practise_v but_o they_o will_v consider_v that_o christ_n say_v not_o bless_a be_v they_o that_o hear_v only_o but_o bless_v be_v they_o that_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n o_o beware_v of_o this_o great_a deceit_n it_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o christ_n innocency_n and_o holiness_n that_o no_o violence_n be_v in_o his_o hand_n there_o be_v no_o sinful_a thing_n in_o his_o practice_n no_o be_v in_o so_o far_o a_o utter_a unsuitableness_n to_o the_o holiness_n of_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o where_o profanity_n appear_v in_o the_o conversation_n for_o there_o be_v no_o deceit_n in_o his_o mouth_n 2._o because_o this_o word_n of_o god_n prescrive_v the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n to_o be_v believe_v as_o well_o as_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v and_o the_o right_n ground_v of_o faith_n be_v a_o main_a if_o not_o the_o main_a thing_n wherein_o the_o image_n of_o god_n consist_v to_o wit_n in_o knowledge_n and_o error_n be_v as_o inconsistent_a with_o knowledge_n as_o ignorance_n be_v yea_o more_o in_o so_o far_o as_o it_o leave_v a_o contrary_a impression_n of_o untruth_n on_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v worse_o than_o simple_a ignorance_n 3._o because_o when_o a_o conscience_n be_v thenceforth_o make_v of_o sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n or_o lord_n day_n nor_o of_o any_o other_o duty_n of_o worship_n but_o man_n become_v almost_o if_o not_o altogether_o atheist_n yea_o 4._o the_o incoming_a of_o error_n beget_v a_o sort_n of_o presumptuous_a confidence_n therefore_o christ_n say_v he_o that_o break_v one_o of_o these_o commandment_n and_o teach_v man_n so_o off_o man_n and_o remember_v that_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n god_n and_o some_o commission_v from_o he_o that_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o that_o so_o we_o may_v accept_v of_o the_o message_n 1._o and_o do_v you_o think_v that_o such_o a_o faith_n as_o that_o will_v abide_v the_o trial_n before_o god_n that_o never_o do_v abide_v your_o own_o trial_n it_o will_v doubtless_o be_v a_o sore_n which_o it_o be_v our_o design_n and_o scope_n to_o bring_v you_o to_o try_v your_o long_a unquestioned_a peace_n do_v not_o therefore_o think_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v thus_o persuade_v as_o many_o of_o you_o be_v and_o yet_o to_o be_v mistake_v which_o be_v another_o ground_n of_o foulkes_n deceit_n for_o laodicea_n be_v very_o confident_a in_o think_v herself_o to_o be_v rich_a and_o increase_v in_o good_n and_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o nothing_o when_o she_o be_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n poor_a blind_a miserable_a wretched_a and_o naked_a and_o the_o galatian_n as_o we_o may_v see_v chap._n 5.8_o have_v a_o persuasion_n which_o be_v not_o of_o god_n as_o there_o may_v be_v a_o persuasion_n of_o a_o point_n of_o doctrine_n as_o be_v right_a which_o yet_o be_v a_o error_n so_o there_o may_v be_v a_o persuasion_n of_o a_o man_n spiritual_a state_n as_o be_v right_a and_o which_o he_o will_v stout_o maintain_v to_o be_v so_o while_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n that_o persuasion_n be_v not_o of_o god_n that_o call_v he_o but_o a_o strong_a delusion_n if_o all_o that_o be_v faith_n that_o you_o call_v faith_n then_o certain_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v much_o broad_a than_o the_o scripture_n have_v chalk_v it_o out_o and_o minister_n need_v not_o say_v who_o believe_v our_o report_n for_o all_o shall_v thus_o believe_v it_o it_o will_v then_o and_o must_v then_o turn_v to_o this_o that_o your_o persuasion_n be_v not_o of_o he_o that_o call_v you_o and_o if_o a_o deceit_n may_v lie_v and_o lurk_v under_o this_o persuasion_n of_o you_o you_o have_v certain_o so_o much_o the_o more_o need_n to_o put_v the_o business_n to_o trial_n and_o this_o be_v the_o last_o use_v which_o we_o can_v now_o insist_v on_o that_o see_v so_o many_o think_v they_o believe_v who_o believe_v not_o and_o that_o there_o be_v but_o few_o that_o believe_v the_o report_n and_o indeed_o rest_v on_o christ_n for_o their_o salvation_n as_o he_o be_v offer_v to_o they_o in_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v of_o your_o concernment_n to_o endeavour_v to_o put_v yourselves_o without_o the_o reach_n of_o this_o complaint_n and_o to_o make_v it_o sure_a that_o you_o have_v believe_v and_o receive_v the_o report_n be_v there_o any_o thing_n of_o concernment_n if_o this_o be_v not_o even_o to_o makâ—_n your_o call_v and_o election_n sure_a and_o that_o can_v be_v make_v sure_a as_o to_o you_o till_o your_o faith_n be_v make_v sure_o if_o we_o can_v prevail_v this_o far_o with_o you_o we_o will_v count_v it_o a_o bless_a fruit_n of_o this_o and_o of_o many_o other_o preach_n even_o that_o some_o of_o you_o who_o have_v never_o question_v your_o faith_n may_v be_v engage_v first_o serious_o to_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o then_o to_o put_v yourselves_o to_o the_o trial_n that_o on_o distinct_a ground_n you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o say_v i_o know_v in_o who_o i_o have_v believe_v and_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v that_o which_o i_o have_v commit_v to_o he_o against_o that_o day_n there_o be_v many_o of_o you_o that_o talk_v of_o faith_n and_o yet_o can_v only_o not_o assert_v your_o interest_n in_o christ_n distinct_o but_o can_v so_o much_o as_o give_v any_o solid_a ground_n of_o your_o believe_v and_o shall_v not_o this_o think_v you_o put_v you_o to_o try_v it_o be_v there_o not_o a_o day_n come_v wherein_o you_o will_v all_o be_v try_v whether_o your_o allege_a faith_n be_v true_a faith_n or_o but_o presumption_n and_o wherein_o the_o conscience_n which_o be_v now_o quiet_a and_o which_o it_o may_v be_v never_o keep_v you_o from_o a_o hour_n sleep_v shall_v awake_v and_o put_v forth_o its_o sting_n and_o shall_v bite_v and_o gnaw_v and_o you_o who_o shall_v continue_v under_o the_o power_n of_o this_o delusion_n will_v be_v put_v to_o gnaw_v your_o tongue_n for_o pain_n and_o horror_n under_o the_o gnawing_n of_o your_o conscience_n you_o that_o
never_o know_v all_o along_o your_o life_n what_o these_o thing_n mean_v have_v need_n to_o stand_v the_o more_o in_o awe_n and_o to_o be_v afraid_a when_o you_o come_v near_o death_n though_o it_o be_v a_o sad_a matter_n that_o when_o we_o shall_v be_v preach_v and_o will_v fain_o preach_v the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n it_o shall_v by_o reason_n of_o your_o delusion_n be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o our_o work_n to_o be_v thus_o dig_v you_o out_o of_o your_o presumption_n and_o overturning_a your_o carnal_a and_o ill-grounded_a hope_n yet_o we_o have_v the_o great_a confidence_n and_o the_o more_o peace_n to_o speak_v to_o and_o insist_v in_o these_o truth_n because_o they_o lie_v so_o near_o to_o the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o your_o immortal_a soul_n salvation_n and_o though_o we_o be_v able_a to_o preach_v more_o plausible_a and_o sweet_a thing_n to_o you_o yet_o if_o these_o doctrine_n profit_v you_o not_o these_o will_v not_o sâ—ing_v therefore_o they_o be_v so_o profitable_a we_o shall_v not_o weary_v to_o speak_v and_o you_o shall_v not_o weary_v to_o hear_v they_o speak_v of_o will_v to_o god_n you_o be_v serious_o â—nd_v sincere_o aim_v to_o be_v clear_a and_o through_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o believe_v and_o that_o you_o stand_v in_o need_n and_o be_v more_o capable_a of_o more_o pleasant_a truth_n if_o so_o we_o may_v have_v more_o comfortable_a though_o we_o will_v not_o say_v more_o profitable_a doctrine_n to_o insist_v upon_o to_o you_o sermon_n xii_o isaiah_n liii_o i_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v we_o have_v speak_v at_o several_a occasion_n to_o this_o first_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n and_o before_o we_o leave_v it_o there_o be_v one_o use_v several_a time_n hint_v at_o already_o to_o which_o there_o be_v good_a ground_n to_o speak_v it_o be_v the_o design_n and_o purpose_n of_o these_o word_n to_o hold_v forth_o of_o what_o great_a concernment_n believe_v be_v and_o of_o what_o great_a difficulty_n it_o be_v and_o so_o many_o be_v to_o the_o ruin_n of_o their_o soul_n mistake_v about_o it_o there_o be_v ground_n to_o draw_v this_o use_n of_o exhortation_n from_o it_o to_o wit_n that_o then_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o this_o gospel_n will_v be_v exhort_v to_o advert_v well_o to_o this_o that_o they_o make_v faith_n sure_a in_o itself_o and_o that_o they_o make_v it_o sure_a to_o themselves_o see_v as_o i_o say_v so_o many_o be_v mistake_v about_o it_o and_o beguile_v themselves_o the_o more_o press_o that_o the_o gospel_n call_v for_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o more_o weighty_o the_o lord_n expostulate_v with_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n because_o of_o their_o unbelief_n they_o be_v doubtless_o so_o much_o the_o more_o concern_v to_o receive_v it_o in_o its_o offer_n and_o also_o to_o look_v well_o that_o they_o content_v not_o themselves_o with_o guess_v at_o faith_n and_o that_o they_o never_o think_v that_o thing_n be_v well_o with_o they_o except_o they_o can_v give_v good_a proof_n and_o warrant_v that_o they_o be_v so_o and_o that_o it_o be_v save_v faith_n that_o they_o have_v see_v there_o be_v so_o many_o that_o satisfy_v themselves_o as_o be_v believer_n when_o yet_o so_o few_o be_v believer_n indâ—ed_v the_o sâ—d_a mistake_n and_o disappointment_n of_o many_o shall_v have_v so_o much_o influence_n upon_o we_o as_o to_o put_v we_o to_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o to_o a_o more_o narrow_a trial_n of_o our_o own_o state_n and_o condition_n that_o we_o may_v know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o we_o all_o that_o we_o have_v speak_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o this_o first_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n may_v be_v as_o so_o many_o motive_n to_o stir_v you_o up_o to_o both_o these_o and_o will_v to_o god_n we_o can_v be_v persuade_v to_o this_o as_o the_o use_v of_o so_o many_o preach_n once_o to_o admit_v and_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n a_o absolute_a necessity_n for_o we_o to_o be_v real_o roll_v and_o casten_z over_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n by_o faith_n for_o attain_v of_o life_n through_o he_o though_o this_o be_v a_o very_a common_a doctrine_n and_o you_o will_v think_v a_o very_a common_a use_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o god_n require_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o or_o not_o receive_v his_o son_n the_o very_a contest_v and_o quarrel_v that_o god_n have_v with_o the_o hearer_n of_o it_o and_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o ruin_n of_o so_o many_o soul_n that_o perish_v under_o the_o gospel_n we_o shall_v therefore_o propose_v to_o you_o some_o consideration_n that_o may_v stir_v you_o up_o to_o this_o and_o brief_o answer_v a_o question_n in_o each_o of_o these_o two_o branch_n of_o the_o use_n and_o first_o for_o stir_v you_o up_o to_o this_o receive_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n 1._o consider_v if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o stand_a quarrel_n and_o contraversie_n betwixt_o god_n and_o you_o for_o sin_n and_o if_o there_o be_v as_o no_o doubt_n there_o be_v consider_v how_o that_o contraversie_n be_v to_o be_v remove_v be_v there_o any_o other_o possible_a way_n but_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n if_o we_o be_v preach_v to_o such_o as_o have_v never_o sin_v and_o be_v never_o under_o the_o hazard_n of_o the._n wrath_n of_o god_n there_o may_v possible_o be_v a_o difficulty_n to_o persuade_v to_o a_o receive_n of_o christ_n but_o when_o you_o have_v all_o this_o in_o your_o conscience_n that_o there_o be_v sin_n and_o a_o curse_n follow_v sin_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n for_o remove_v that_o curse_n but_o by_o jesus_n christ_n be_v there_o not_o reason_n to_o expect_v that_o you_o shall_v receive_v this_o truth_n will_v any_o of_o you_o think_v to_o stand_v and_o bide_v it_o out_o against_o god_n and_o if_o not_o then_o there_o be_v sure_a a_o necessity_n of_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n or_o of_o lie_v under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n for_o ever_o 2._o consider_v that_o this_o gospel_n and_o word_n of_o salvation_n be_v preach_v to_o you_o in_o particular_a when_o we_o speak_v of_o salvation_n we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o christ_n be_v once_o preach_v to_o the_o jew_n or_o that_o in_o such_o a_o far-off_a nation_n there_o be_v a_o door_n open_v for_o salvation_n in_o the_o gospel_n but_o we_o will_v turn_v over_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n act_n 13.38_o to_o you_o and_o say_v to_o you_o in_o his_o word_n be_v it_o know_v to_o you_o therefore_o man_n and_o brethren_n that_o through_o this_o man_n to_o wit_n jesus_n christ_n be_v preach_v to_o you_o remission_n of_o sin_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o bring_v the_o gospel_n near_o you_o even_o to_o your_o door_n it_o lay_v before_o you_o the_o way_n of_o access_n to_o god_n by_o christ_n and_o put_v it_o so_o close_o and_o home_o to_o you_o that_o christ_n must_v either_o have_v a_o refusal_n or_o a_o welcome_a from_o you_o the_o first_o consideration_n of_o your_o own_o sinfulness_n and_o misery_n may_v put_v you_o to_o seek_v after_o a_o saviour_n though_o he_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n but_o this_o other_o bring_v he_o to_o your_o heart_n and_o mouth_n and_o be_v it_o fit_a think_v you_o to_o neglect_v such_o a_o fair_a occasion_n and_o will_v it_o be_v wisdom_n when_o salvation_n follow_v you_o and_o cry_v after_o you_o and_o wisdom_n lift_v up_o its_o voice_n in_o the_o street_n say_v o_o you_o simple_a one_o how_o long_o will_v you_o love_v foolishness_n etc._n etc._n to_o stop_v your_o ear_n or_o to_o turn_v away_o from_o christ_n and_o to_o run_v upon_o your_o destruction_n do_v you_o think_v that_o this_o gospel_n will_v be_v silent_a always_o or_o that_o your_o conscience_n will_v be_v deaf_a and_o dumb_a always_o there_o be_v many_o nation_n that_o have_v not_o the_o gospel_n so_o near_o they_o and_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o know_v but_o the_o day_n may_v come_v when_o you_o will_v be_v content_a to_o buy_v a_o offer_n of_o the_o gospel_n at_o a_o dear_a raâ—e_n and_o when_o there_o shall_v not_o be_v a_o tryster_n nor_o a_o dâ—ys-man_n to_o be_v have_v between_o god_n and_o you_o and_o these_o day_n will_v then_o be_v remember_v with_o horror_n which_o now_o you_o secure_o slip_v over_o 3._o consider_v what_o will_v come_v of_o this_o if_o you_o do_v not_o believe_v the_o gospel_n know_v you_o not_o that_o many_o perish_v that_o hear_v the_o gospel_n and_o that_o upon_o this_o same_o very_a ground_n that_o they_o do_v not_o receive_v christ_n and_o salvation_n through_o he_o offer_v to_o they_o therein_o and_o whereof_o they_o be_v now_o deprive_v be_v there_o not_o many_o this_o
that_o he_o shall_v be_v opp_n essâ—â—_n and_o afflict_a and_o bring_v as_o a_o lamb_n to_o the_o slaughter_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v number_v amongst_o the_o transgressor_n and_o that_o he_o shall_v reconcile_a soul_n seal_v this_o truth_n hence_o 1_o john_n 5.7_o 8_o it_o be_v say_v there_o be_v three_o that_o bear_v witness_n in_o heaven_n the_o father_n the_o word_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o our_o faith_n and_o though_o it_o be_v sure_a in_o itself_o yet_o so_o long_o as_o it_o be_v not_o so_o to_o we_o we_o want_v the_o consolation_n of_o it_o and_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a prejudice_n that_o come_v through_o folk_n want_v of_o thorough_a clearness_n in_o and_o assurance_n of_o this_o truth_n 1._o to_o the_o generality_n of_o hearer_n there_o be_v this_o prejudice_n that_o they_o be_v so_o careless_a and_o little_a solicitous_a to_o rest_v on_o he_o and_o as_o it_o make_v the_o jew_n to_o reject_v he_o who_o to_o this_o day_n stumble_v at_o he_o on_o this_o same_o very_a ground_n that_o they_o know_v he_o not_o to_o be_v the_o messiah_n the_o christ_n of_o god_n in_o who_o be_v accomplish_v all_o that_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o messiah_n to_o christian_n not_o be_v through_o in_o it_o they_o do_v not_o rest_v on_o he_o nor_o close_a with_o he_o as_o the_o true_a messiah_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o prejudice_n also_o from_o it_o to_o believer_n who_o have_v only_o a_o glimmer_a light_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o messiah_n come_v short_a of_o thar_z consolation_n that_o they_o may_v hâ—ve_v if_o they_o be_v through_o in_o the_o fâ—ith_n oâ—_n it_o there_o be_v this_o great_a evil_n among_o christian_n that_o they_o study_v not_o to_o be_v solid_o clear_a and_o through_o in_o this_o point_n to_o that_o if_o they_o be_v puâ—_n to_o reason_n and_o debate_n with_o a_o jew_n if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o witness_n within_o themselves_o of_o it_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o faith_n of_o many_o will_v be_v exceed_o shake_v 2._o from_o this_o that_o he_o never_o speak_v of_o christ_n suffering_n but_o he_o make_v application_n of_o they_o he_o carry_v our_o grief_n he_o be_v wound_v for_o our_o transgression_n etc._n etc._n observe_v that_o believer_n will_v look_v on_o christ_n suffering_n as_o undergo_v for_o they_o and_o in_o their_o room_n and_o place_n we_o clear_v before_o 1._o that_o christ_n suffer_v for_o some_o peculiarly_a and_o not_o for_o all_o and_o 2._o thâ—t_a believer_n will_v endeavour_v the_o clear_n of_o their_o own_o interest_n in_o his_o suffering_n and_o that_o they_o have_v a_o right_n to_o they_o now_o we_o short_o add_v this_o 3d._n of_o kin_n to_o the_o former_a that_o b_o liever_n and_o such_o as_o be_v flee_v to_o christ_n for_o refuge_n will_v look_v on_o his_o suffering_n as_o come_v under_o for_o they_o and_o these_o same_o scripture_n which_o we_o cite_v to_o confirm_v these_o will_v confirm_v this_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o will_v have_v you_o confirm_v in_o this_o be_v because_o 1_o it_o be_v
