mere_a physical_a or_o astronomical_a consideration_n of_o the_o revolution_n of_o the_o heaven_n and_o namely_o of_o the_o primum_fw-la mobile_a in_o the_o space_n of_o 24_o hour_n as_o we_o count_v they_o understand_v not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o term_n of_o astronomy_n as_o may_v easy_o be_v make_v good_a even_o by_o experience_n of_o shepherd_n who_o can_v usual_o by_o see_v the_o sun_n any_o time_n of_o the_o day_n tell_v what_o hour_n it_o be_v near-hand_o without_o any_o dial_n time_n 2._o practical_o our_o wake_a time_n or_o mark_v on_o the_o ground_n only_o by_o look_v up_o to_o it_o 2._o or_o by_o a_o consideration_n partly_o ethicall_a and_o practical_a that_o be_v that_o time_n within_o the_o space_n of_o 24_o hour_n wherein_o man_n be_v awake_v which_o be_v proper_o and_o only_o the_o time_n of_o business_n any_o day_n and_o which_o wake_v time_n be_v the_o only_a continuance_n possible_a according_a to_o nature_n to_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n or_o in_o any_o other_o business_n as_o we_o say_v for_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a we_o know_v to_o employ_v ourselves_o in_o any_o business_n or_o service_n of_o god_n not_o be_v awake_a now_o this_o wake_a time_n special_o so_o much_o as_o be_v between_o that_o wake_n in_o the_o morning_n which_o be_v for_o all_o day_n as_o we_o say_v when_o a_o man_n present_o rise_v or_o at_o least_o set_v his_o mind_n a_o work_n straight_o upon_o some_o business_n or_o pleasure_n and_o that_o sleep_a time_n when_o a_o man_n lay_v himself_o down_o to_o sleep_v for_o that_o night_n be_v in_o common_a speech_n also_o term_v a_o day_n and_o man_n business_n their_o daily_a work_n and_o labour_n particular_o of_o household_n servant_n apprentice_n and_o other_o be_v usual_o during_o that_o whole_a continuance_n and_o now_o of_o both_o these_o description_n of_o a_o natural_a day_n we_o say_v sense_n xxi_o these_o be_v both_o one_o in_o our_o sense_n that_o for_o the_o matter_n we_o have_v now_o in_o hand_n they_o be_v in_o true_a construction_n but_o one_o and_o the_o same_o special_o if_o we_o remember_v that_o which_o we_o have_v heretofore_o lay_v down_o about_o the_o determination_n of_o time_n general_o in_o any_o respect_n that_o it_o admit_v of_o some_o reservation_n or_o dispensation_n according_a to_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o determiner_n sufficient_o make_v know_v for_o so_o be_v proper_o and_o only_o the_o day_n for_o business_n and_o so_o the_o day_n which_o be_v determine_v as_o we_o say_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o god_n worship_n solemn_a worship_n as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v and_o ejaculatory_a in_o meal-time_n by_o speak_v and_o think_v of_o god_n upon_o every_o turn_n and_o not_o settle_v the_o thought_n or_o word_n upon_o any_o worldly_a object_n or_o business_n unnecessary_o that_o so_o god_n may_v have_v all_o that_o can_v possible_o be_v tender_v he_o on_o his_o solemn_a day_n way_n xxii_o a_o objection_n answer_v two_o way_n if_o now_o any_o shall_v object_v that_o if_o we_o make_v the_o wake_a time_n of_o man_n within_o 24_o hour_n to_o be_v such_o a_o day_n as_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n determine_v for_o god_n worship_n then_o whether_o it_o determine_v only_o one_o such_o day_n in_o a_o man_n life_n or_o more_o of_o which_o we_o yet_o dispute_v not_o but_o shall_v do_v anon_o it_o determine_v not_o equal_o to_o several_a man_n but_o to_o some_o a_o long_a continuance_n to_o some_o a_o short_a because_o all_o do_v not_o nor_o can_v wake_v a_o like_a continuance_n but_o some_o more_o some_o less_o according_a to_o the_o natural_a ability_n and_o temper_n of_o their_o bodily_a spirit_n some_o be_v not_o satisfy_v without_o they_o have_v more_o sleep_n than_o other_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o and_o that_o it_o seem_v geometrical_a as_o the_o school_n speak_v but_o not_o to_o the_o same_o proportion_n arithmetical_a as_o for_o example_n the_o law_n of_o nature_n bind_v all_o rich_a man_n equal_o in_o one_o sense_n to_o relieve_v the_o poor_a but_o in_o another_o sense_n it_o bind_v they_o not_o all_o equal_o it_o equal_o bind_v they_o all_o in_o a_o geometrical_a proportion_n that_o be_v according_a as_o they_o be_v able_a to_o spare_v and_o other_o need_v but_o it_o bind_v they_o not_o all_o equal_o in_o or_o to_o a_o arithmetical_a proportion_n that_o be_v just_o so_o many_o pound_n shilling_n or_o penny_n because_o all_o have_v not_o alike_o to_o spare_v so_o in_o this_o case_n the_o law_n of_o nature_n equal_o bind_v all_o man_n to_o give_v god_n a_o day_n that_o be_v such_o as_o day_n as_o they_o be_v able_a such_o a_o
day_n as_o their_o natural_a spirit_n can_v hold_v out_o unto_o as_o they_o be_v able_a to_o continue_v wake_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o it_o do_v not_o bind_v all_o then_o equal_o to_o the_o same_o proportion_n of_o minute_n because_o all_o be_v not_o able_a to_o wake_v equal_o one_o as_o long_o as_o a_o other_o but_o so_o far_o as_o man_n be_v able_a it_o bind_v all_o equal_o all_o be_v bind_v to_o serve_v god_n in_o the_o day_n with_o all_o their_o strength_n the_o strength_n of_o all_o their_o natural_a ability_n and_o so_o much_o we_o shall_v present_o see_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n command_v every_o one_o of_o mankind_n and_o more_o than_o so_o much_o it_o do_v not_o command_v whether_o the_o continuance_n be_v long_o or_o short_a compare_v with_o other_o 2._o xxiv_o answ_n 2._o 2._o but_o with_o all_o we_o say_v if_o any_o one_o of_o mankind_n through_o neglect_n of_o the_o service_n of_o god_n or_o misse-devotion_n to_o it_o do_v willing_o sleep_v more_o and_o wake_v less_o time_n than_o he_o need_v to_o do_v whether_o again_o the_o continuance_n compare_v with_o other_o man_n be_v long_o or_o short_a he_o be_v and_o will_v be_v find_v a_o transgressor_n against_o this_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o this_o be_v but_o corruption_n in_o he_o though_o perhaps_o he_o may_v pretend_v natural_a infirmity_n but_o of_o that_o and_o all_o other_o such_o like_a pretence_n this_o rule_n in_o a_o word_n may_v be_v a_o certain_a and_o sufficient_a judge_n that_o what_o continuance_n soever_o a_o man_n be_v able_a to_o keep_v himself_o wake_v in_o a_o day_n about_o any_o worldly_a business_n or_o matter_n of_o pleasure_n game_a or_o the_o like_a he_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v himself_o according_a to_o nature_n the_o same_o continuance_n of_o time_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o one_o or_o other_o exercise_n of_o religion_n which_o natural_o weary_a not_o the_o spirit_n more_o than_o worldly_a matter_n but_o rather_o less_o than_o many_o worldly_a matter_n and_o the_o variety_n may_v refresh_v and_o do_v great_o the_o mind_n so_o far_o as_o carnality_n and_o corruption_n oversway_v not_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o state_v of_o this_o position_n concern_v a_o day_n to_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n we_o distinguish_v natural_a ability_n from_o corruption_n for_o we_o take_v it_o for_o a_o most_o undeniable_a truth_n that_o corruption_n do_v not_o hinder_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n from_o command_v to_o the_o utmost_a of_o natural_a ability_n as_o long_o at_o least_o as_o it_o exceed_v not_o they_o for_o the_o love_a and_o so_o serve_v god_n withal_o our_o strength_n as_o be_v touch_v before_o be_v infallible_o of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o yet_o no_o man_n corruption_n now_o suffer_v he_o to_o yield_v god_n so_o much_o love_n and_o service_n this_o also_o make_v be_v make_v good_a in_o manifold_a particular_a instance_n that_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n do_v command_v we_o to_o do_v thing_n which_o now_o according_a to_o our_o corruption_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n to_o do_v as_o to_o pray_v or_o read_v or_o hear_v the_o word_n when_o ever_o he_o do_v any_o of_o these_o duty_n with_o a_o steady_a fix_a heart_n and_o mind_n without_o any_o distraction_n or_o worldly_a thought_n at_o all_o that_o while_n for_o that_o they_o be_v so_o far_o forth_o a_o take_n of_o god_n holy_a name_n in_o vain_a yet_o this_o no_o man_n be_v able_a now_o to_o do_v as_o all_o man_n conscience_n will_v confess_v even_o though_o they_o employ_v but_o a_o very_a short_a continuance_n in_o it_o and_o now_o we_o come_v to_o prove_v continuance_n xxv_o a_o argument_n to_o prove_v that_o nature_n determine_v a_o day_n continuance_n that_o a_o day_n continuance_n for_o religion_n be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n from_o ground_n and_o principle_n in_o nature_n which_o we_o have_v former_o make_v use_v of_o if_o it_o be_v sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n never_o in_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n a_o whole_a day_n at_o once_o then_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n determine_v to_o every_o man_n a_o whole_a day_n continuance_n once_o as_o nature_n can_v possible_o determine_v and_o possible_o give_v at_o once_o where_o all_o that_o a_o man_n have_v be_v due_a that_o debt_n can_v be_v satisfy_v unless_o all_o be_v tender_v to_o he_o so_o unless_o all_o the_o continuance_n of_o a_o day_n be_v tender_v to_o god_n he_o have_v not_o all_o that_o be_v due_a to_o he_o as_o lord_n of_o all_o our_o time_n also_o where_o a_o man_n acknowledge_v his_o whole_a happiness_n to_o lie_v that_o can_v but_o carry_v he_o with_o the_o whole_a of_o his_o strength_n to_o the_o utmost_a continuance_n nature_n have_v to_o give_v for_o all_o that_o a_o man_n do_v be_v towards_o his_o happiness_n and_o nothing_o can_v draw_v his_o mind_n from_o it_o while_o his_o acknowledgement_n of_o it_o fail_v not_o now_o we_o have_v already_o show_v that_o nature_n can_v and_o do_v determine_v such_o a_o day_n to_o every_o man_n for_o business_n of_o what_o kind_n soever_o and_o that_o it_o can_v give_v it_o whole_o to_o god_n employ_v it_o whole_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n take_v in_o special_o the_o reservation_n of_o any_o necessary_a refresh_n which_o nature_n and_o not_o corruption_n call_v for_o god_n allow_v and_o any_o extraordinary_a other_o necessary_a interruption_n as_o we_o have_v former_o say_v therefore_o never_o throughout_o a_o man_n life_n to_o give_v god_n that_o which_o nature_n be_v so_o able_a to_o give_v he_o be_v against_o those_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n sovereignty_n and_o his_o be_v our_o happiness_n and_o so_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n answer_v xxvi_o a_o objection_n answer_v if_o here_o it_o be_v object_v that_o the_o same_o argument_n will_v as_o well_o prove_v the_o whole_a continuance_n of_o every_o day_n of_o our_o life_n as_o of_o one_o day_n which_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o do_v nor_o can_v because_o our_o natural_a necessity_n allow_v by_o god_n and_o even_o command_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n as_o it_o concern_v the_o second_o table_n duty_n admit_v it_o not_o and_o therefore_o the_o argument_n be_v either_o false_a or_o impertinent_a or_o both_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o objection_n furnish_v we_o with_o sufficient_a justification_n of_o the_o argument_n both_o truth_n and_o pertinencie_n for_o we_o grant_v according_a to_o the_o objection_n that_o god_n in_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n command_v to_o attend_v necessary_a worldly_a business_n as_o well_o we_o say_v not_o as_o much_o that_o be_v as_o absolute_o necessary_o as_o his_o service_n and_o the_o pursue_v immediate_o of_o the_o soul_n happiness_n in_o and_o by_o they_o therefore_o in_o sensu_fw-la composito_fw-la it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o the_o argument_n prove_v the_o whole_a of_o every_o day_n continuance_n to_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n for_o religion_n and_o god_n immediate_a worship_n although_o in_o sensu_fw-la diviso_fw-la it_o prove_v of_o every_o particular_a day_n that_o be_v this_o or_o that_o quando_fw-la as_o well_o as_o of_o one_o but_o we_o propound_v it_o not_o of_o any_o particular_a day_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o quando_fw-la or_o season_n this_o or_o that_o day_n but_o only_o of_o one_o single_a continuance_n of_o a_o day_n and_o so_o it_o be_v both_o true_a and_o pertinent_a it_o be_v true_a for_o though_o natural_a necessity_n of_o worldly_a business_n will_v not_o admit_v the_o whole_a continuance_n of_o every_o day_n one_o after_o another_o that_o be_v the_o quoties_fw-la or_o revolution_n join_v to_o the_o continuance_n which_o we_o meddle_v not_o with_o in_o the_o argument_n yet_o they_o will_v certain_o admit_v one_o day_n in_o a_o man_n life_n we_o mean_v ordinary_a business_n will_v and_o for_o extraordinary_a necessity_n we_o grant_v as_o before_o reservation_n for_o they_o if_o they_o shall_v fall_v out_o when_o a_o man_n be_v upon_o that_o one_o day_n devotion_n therefore_o

this_o discourse_n we_o shall_v show_v it_o by_o and_o by_o a_o second_o objection_n may_v be_v make_v namely_o answer_v xxvii_o another_o objection_n answer_v that_o what_o be_v necessary_a by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n be_v always_o and_o certain_o so_o but_o so_o be_v not_o this_o because_o for_o any_o thing_n the_o light_n of_o nature_n can_v see_v or_o say_v god_n may_v have_v declare_v that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v a_o whole_a day_n at_o any_o time_n at_o once_o and_o then_o the_o argument_n will_v overthrow_v itself_o he_o be_v the_o sovereign_a lord_n of_o in_o and_o all_o our_o all_o time_n be_v he_o and_o he_o have_v no_o need_n of_o any_o service_n of_o we_o therefore_o the_o argument_n be_v intend_v but_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o god_n have_v not_o refuse_v a_o whole_a seldome_a because_o nature_n seem_v to_o have_v no_o frequenter_a distinct_a revolution_n than_o a_o day_n and_o that_o it_o have_v and_o be_v able_a to_o observe_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o and_z according_o be_v able_a to_o worship_n god_n even_o solemn_o so_o often_o there_o be_v no_o impediment_n imaginable_a why_o within_o the_o revolution_n of_o every_o day_n a_o man_n may_v not_o give_v god_n some_o solemn_a worship_n but_o we_o say_v though_o this_o seem_v a_o fair_a assertion_n and_o suitable_a to_o what_o we_o have_v before_o of_o the_o natural_a continuance_n of_o a_o day_n yet_o if_o we_o shall_v speak_v practical_o and_o ethical_o as_o we_o do_v partly_o before_o of_o the_o continuance_n we_o must_v deliver_v ourselves_o somewhat_o otherwise_o and_o indeed_o so_o we_o must_v all_o man_n general_o consider_v it_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o although_o some_o particular_n may_v be_v yet_o oblige_v to_o some_o what_o often_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v plain_o this_o that_o practical_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o observe_v a_o revolution_n of_o time_n wherein_o we_o may_v if_o we_o have_v heart_n to_o it_o set_v ourselves_o to_o worship_n god_n even_o solemn_o as_o oft_o as_o our_o mind_n cease_v from_o be_v take_v up_o whole_o with_o any_o worldly_a business_n and_o that_o such_o business_n will_v by_o any_o mean_n admit_v a_o interruption_n of_o a_o minute_n or_o half_o a_o minute_n to_o lift_v up_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n in_o prayer_n or_o praise_n and_o this_o may_v possible_o be_v manifold_a time_n in_o a_o day_n even_o innumerable_a before_o hand_n and_o now_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n from_o those_o often_o mention_v and_o ever_o to_o be_v think_v on_o acknowledgement_n of_o god_n be_v our_o sovereign_a lord_n and_o of_o all_o our_o time_n and_o our_o happiness_n and_o so_o to_o be_v infinite_o prefer_v before_o ourselves_o and_o all_o our_o worldly_a business_n will_v be_v constant_o call_v upon_o we_o in_o all_o those_o revolution_n of_o time_n to_o â—ender_v to_o he_o some_o worship_n how_o short_a soever_o and_o from_o this_o no_o consideration_n of_o god_n not_o only_a dispensation_n but_o command_v to_o employ_v ourselves_o in_o worldly_a calling_n and_o perform_v such_o worldly_a business_n as_o be_v necessary_a according_o can_v be_v pretend_v to_o be_v a_o sufficient_a discharge_n absolute_o and_o always_o for_o we_o have_v before_o prove_v in_o the_o chapter_n of_o solemn_a worship_n and_o it_o be_v not_o deny_v by_o any_o that_o we_o know_v that_o it_o be_v oftentimes_o a_o duty_n which_o we_o now_o say_v be_v according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n not_o only_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o worldly_a business_n to_o tender_v some_o ejaculatory_a worship_n to_o god_n namely_o prayer_n and_o praise_n but_o even_o upon_o sundry_a occasion_n to_o interrupt_v for_o a_o little_a while_n our_o worldly_a business_n whole_o to_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o praise_v he_o somewhat_o solemn_o therefore_o we_o say_v again_o that_o these_o occasion_n be_v impossible_a to_o be_v number_v beforehand_o for_o any_o one_o man_n and_o much_o less_o for_o all_o general_o there_o can_v be_v no_o certain_a conclusive_a determination_n of_o the_o frequency_n by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n that_o just_a so_o often_o and_o no_o often_o shall_v be_v necessary_a for_o solemn_a worship_v of_o god_n by_o all_o man_n and_o now_o from_o this_o we_o go_v on_o to_o our_o three_o question_n propound_v joint_o xxxvi_o nature_n can_v make_v a_o conclusive_a determination_n of_o the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n joint_o concern_v the_o join_n of_o these_o two_o respect_n of_o time_n the_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n both_o in_o one_o conclusive_a determination_n that_o be_v whether_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n can_v possible_o make_v a_o conclusive_a determination_n of_o
derogatory_n to_o the_o authority_n god_n have_v give_v to_o prince_n parent_n master_n though_o pagan_n that_o any_o other_o man_n shall_v have_v or_o be_v say_v or_o think_v to_o have_v authority_n to_o take_v away_o their_o subject_n child_n servant_n from_o their_o work_n under_o pretence_n of_o religion_n so_o many_o hour_n in_o a_o day_n or_o day_n in_o a_o week_n month_n or_o year_n if_o god_n will_v do_v it_o himself_o as_o we_o say_v he_o have_v there_o be_v no_o just_a ground_n of_o gainsay_v but_o for_o man_n to_o do_v it_o special_o who_o can_v show_v no_o title_n of_o any_o such_o authority_n commit_v to_o they_o in_o their_o great_a charter_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n over_o pagan_n how_o unreasonable_a be_v it_o to_o maintain_v therefore_o the_o church_n have_v no_o such_o authority_n to_o determine_v time_n for_o all_o man_n and_o in_o conclusion_n there_o be_v none_o among_o mankind_n find_v that_o have_v this_o authority_n for_o all_o man_n for_o pagan_n particular_o not_o every_o man_n single_a not_o pagan-governours_n for_o all_o under_o they_o not_o the_o church_n for_o all_o man_n ergo_fw-la it_o belong_v not_o to_o man_n but_o to_o god_n and_o here_o if_o we_o do_v stop_v we_o suppose_v upon_o the_o former_a proof_n and_o confession_n of_o such_o a_o time_n moral_a natural_a necessary_a to_o be_v determine_v for_o all_o man_n and_o to_o be_v observe_v by_o all_o man_n for_o religion_n that_o we_o have_v carry_v our_o cause_n against_o all_o gainsay_n member_n xxii_o argument_n against_o the_o church_n have_v authority_n to_o determine_v the_o chief_a time_n for_o all_o its_o member_n but_o because_o our_o adversary_n main_o build_v their_o conceit_n upon_o the_o church_n authority_n over_o her_o own_o member_n and_o of_o this_o they_o main_o dispute_v and_o so_o do_v we_o we_o will_v encounter_v they_o there_o also_o and_o doubt_v not_o to_o prove_v what_o we_o have_v before_o assert_v that_o the_o church_n have_v not_o this_o authority_n give_v she_o by_o god_n no_o not_o over_o she_o own_o member_n to_o determine_v to_o they_o the_o chief_a time_n of_o worship_n necessary_a and_o ordinary_o sufficient_a for_o the_o chief_a time_n our_o argument_n for_o this_o be_v divers_a we_o begin_v with_o one_o general_a one_o border_v upon_o our_o forego_v proof_n and_o rest_v in_o part_n on_o they_o 1._o argum._n 1._o if_o the_o scripture_n contain_v the_o determination_n of_o god_n at_o least_o for_o all_o mankind_n that_o be_v out_o of_o the_o church_n then_o god_n have_v not_o leave_v that_o determination_n of_o this_o time_n unto_o the_o church_n for_o its_o member_n but_o the_o scripture_n contain_v the_o determination_n of_o god_n at_o least_o for_o all_o mankind_n that_o be_v out_o of_o the_o church_n ergo_fw-la god_n have_v not_o leave_v the_o determination_n of_o this_o time_n unto_o the_o church_n for_o its_o member_n the_o consequence_n we_o conceive_v to_o be_v certain_a for_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v principal_o write_v to_o be_v rule_n and_o law_n to_o the_o church_n and_o so_o if_o they_o contain_v any_o law_n for_o all_o the_o residue_n of_o mankind_n then_o much_o more_o shall_v the_o same_o law_n extend_v to_o they_o and_o bound_v they_o many_o law_n give_v to_o the_o church_n in_o scripture_n do_v not_o bind_v the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n absolute_o that_o be_v not_o till_o they_o enter_v into_o the_o church_n and_o so_o into_o the_o covenant_n of_o god_n they_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o the_o passeover_n nor_o admit_v to_o it_o till_o they_o yield_v themselves_o and_o all_o their_o male_n to_o be_v circumcise_v and_o no_o law_n command_v stranger_n to_o take_v circumcision_n upon_o they_o cornelius_n the_o centurion_n do_v not_o though_o a_o man_n that_o fear_v god_n act_v 10.11_o and_o it_o be_v general_o hold_v that_o the_o ceremonial_n and_o judicial_n deliver_v particular_o to_o israel_n by_o moses_n and_o not_o to_o other_o man_n before_o bind_v only_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o willing_a proselyte_n to_o they_o but_o no_o man_n ever_o say_v yet_o that_o the_o law_n express_v in_o scripture_n bind_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n leave_v the_o church_n free_a and_o bind_v not_o they_o or_o that_o any_o one_o law_n do_v so_o the_o consequence_n than_o be_v clear_v the_o antecedent_n we_o take_v also_o to_o be_v undeniable_a upon_o the_o ground_n lay_v namely_o that_o the_o determination_n of_o this_o time_n be_v not_o leave_v to_o man_n to_o every_o man_n single_a or_o any_o number_n of_o man_n for_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o so_o be_v to_o be_v make_v of_o necessity_n to_o religion_n by_o some_o or_o other_o it_o be_v make_v by_o god_n and_o if_o make_v by_o god_n than_o either_o 1._o in_o nature_n which_o we_o have_v also_o disprove_v and_o show_v even_o with_o our_o adversary_n consent_v who_o urge_v the_o same_o to_o serve_v their_o own_o turn_n that_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n do_v not_o make_v this_o determination_n or_o else_o 2._o in_o scripture_n which_o than_o we_o say_v be_v and_o be_v gen._n 2._o to_o adam_n and_o to_o all_o his_o posterity_n all_o mankind_n after_o he_o and_o who_o will_v or_o can_v deny_v it_o to_o be_v express_v gen._n 2._o if_o it_o be_v make_v to_o adam_n or_o else_o 3._o man_n must_v fly_v to_o we_o know_v not_o what_o wild_a imagination_n of_o some_o revelation_n no_o man_n can_v tell_v when_o nor_o of_o what_o to_o cain_n and_o his_o apostatise_v posterity_n and_o so_o to_o the_o rest_n of_o adam_n posterity_n which_o fall_v away_o from_o the_o church_n which_o continue_v chief_o in_o the_o race_n of_o seth_n and_o again_o afterward_o a_o new_a revelation_n to_o chaâ—_n and_o his_o posterity_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o noah_n posterity_n who_o revolt_v from_o the_o church_n and_o remain_v out_o of_o it_o revelation_n we_o say_v to_o these_o of_o a_o determination_n make_v by_o god_n of_o a_o proportion_n of_o time_n that_o even_o they_o be_v to_o observe_v though_o no_o man_n can_v guess_v any_o thing_n what_o or_o how_o or_o when_o this_o be_v which_o be_v so_o exotic_a a_o fancy_n have_v so_o plain_a a_o story_n as_o gen._n 2._o before_o our_o eye_n as_o we_o suppose_v no_o man_n will_v believe_v himself_o if_o he_o shall_v offer_v to_o affirm_v it_o and_o much_o less_o hope_n that_o any_o other_o will_v believe_v he_o that_o believe_v the_o book_n of_o genesis_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o that_o then_o we_o must_v have_v recourse_n to_o know_v what_o time_n god_n original_o require_v of_o and_o determine_v unto_o all_o mankind_n though_o revolt_a afterward_o from_o the_o church_n most_o of_o they_o and_o so_o neglect_v and_o forget_v it_o he_o vouchsafe_v not_o again_o to_o revive_v it_o to_o they_o particular_o for_o the_o reason_n we_o give_v but_o awhile_o since_o and_o so_o this_o time_n give_v to_o they_o for_o the_o chief_a solemn_a time_n necessary_a and_o sufficient_a be_v also_o give_v to_o the_o church_n who_o be_v also_o adam_n posterity_n or_o rather_o it_o be_v first_o give_v to_o the_o church_n in_o which_o at_o first_o outward_o all_o adam_n posterity_n be_v till_o they_o revolt_v and_o so_o still_o remain_v to_o the_o church_n as_o also_o that_o time_n be_v still_o the_o time_n which_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n stand_v bind_v to_o to_o this_o day_n though_o now_o they_o know_v nothing_o of_o it_o answer_v xxiii_o a_o objection_n answer_v if_o it_o be_v object_v that_o this_o argument_n will_v prove_v indeed_o that_o the_o time_n mention_v gen._n 2._o be_v determine_v to_o adam_n and_o all_o the_o church_n under_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o not_o that_o it_o remain_v god_n determination_n under_o the_o new_a testament_n because_o with_o the_o determination_n of_o the_o chief_a solemn_a time_n for_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n namely_o one_o whole_a day_n in_o seven_o to_o make_v up_o the_o chief_a time_n necessary_a and_o sufficient_a for_o all_o man_n there_o be_v also_o unquestionable_o determine_v withal_o the_o particular_a day_n the_o seven_o day_n from_o the_o first_o creation_n and_o we_o do_v not_o urge_v that_o particular_a day_n upon_o the_o church_n and_o therefore_o no_o more_o may_v we_o the_o other_o determination_n of_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o for_o the_o chief_a time_n we_o answer_v brief_o 1._o we_o deny_v not_o but_o the_o pagan_n those_o that_o be_v out_o of_o the_o church_n and_o so_o know_v nothing_o of_o the_o change_n of_o that_o particular_a day_n stand_v bind_v still_o to_o that_o particular_a day_n as_o well_o as_o to_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o 2._o but_o yet_o we_o deny_v that_o christian_n do_v so_o because_o they_o know_v and_o can_v show_v god_n express_v repeal_n in_o his_o word_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n of_o that_o particular_a day_n we_o
prove_v it_o and_o then_o the_o four_o commandment_n which_o they_o like_v not_o because_o it_o will_v tie_v they_o to_o a_o whole_a day_n continuance_n will_v be_v their_o only_a sufficient_a refuge_n therefore_o also_o their_o reason_n be_v very_o doubtful_o and_o waver_o propound_v and_o so_o we_o esteem_v that_o such_o a_o answer_n be_v over_o ambiguous_a to_o be_v sufficient_a to_o satisfy_v either_o of_o our_o argument_n and_o if_o they_o will_v hereafter_o or_o any_o for_o they_o offer_v to_o make_v a_o answer_n definite_o and_o clear_o either_o to_o the_o necessity_n or_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o proportion_n let_v they_o have_v but_o one_o day_n of_o ten_o or_o twenty_o as_o necessary_a and_o two_o hour_n of_o that_o day_n or_o nominate_v those_o or_o any_o other_o proportion_n of_o frequency_n and_o continuance_n as_o sufficient_a whatever_o they_o instance_n in_o and_o whether_o it_o be_v well_o or_o ill_a yet_o will_v it_o suffice_v for_o our_o argument_n to_o justify_v they_o and_o confirm_v that_o the_o church_n have_v no_o absolute_a or_o legislative_a authority_n to_o determine_v this_o chief_a time_n necessary_a and_o sufficient_a to_o religion_n but_o that_o nature_n and_o reason_n or_o scripture_n some_o or_o all_o of_o these_o do_v beforehand_o determine_v the_o necessity_n and_o sufficiency_n of_o it_o and_o that_o the_o church_n office_n herein_o be_v no_o more_o but_o of_o a_o crier_n or_o preacher_n as_o our_o divine_n urge_v against_o the_o papist_n in_o point_n of_o the_o church_n authority_n to_o determine_v what_o book_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o declare_v and_o pronounce_v and_o then_o consequent_o to_o use_v her_o authority_n over_o her_o member_n to_o urge_v they_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o it_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v and_o not_o at_o all_o of_o a_o lawgiver_n to_o determine_v it_o and_o thus_o much_o we_o very_o believe_v these_o argument_n have_v evince_v undeniable_o which_o therefore_o we_o again_o desire_v our_o reader_n to_o observe_v that_o so_o the_o church_n absolute_a and_o unlimited_a authority_n may_v be_v no_o more_o urge_v in_o this_o controversy_n no_o not_o in_o general_n and_o so_o deceivable_a term_n and_o then_o we_o doubt_v not_o but_o many_o reader_n will_v soon_o see_v a_o necessity_n to_o have_v recourse_n to_o the_o four_o commandment_n as_o god_n own_o determination_n of_o this_o necessary_a and_o sufficient_a chief_a time_n for_o continuance_n a_o whole_a day_n for_o frequency_n one_o in_o seven_o as_o the_o only_a sure_a ground_n for_o conscience_n to_o rest_n upon_o in_o so_o important_a a_o matter_n and_o that_o many_o more_o not_o to_o say_v all_o that_o be_v not_o swallow_v up_o with_o prejudices_fw-la will_v be_v of_o the_o same_o mind_n when_o we_o have_v express_o discuss_v whether_o the_o church_n wisdom_n will_v or_o can_v suffice_v to_o determine_v from_o nature_n and_o reason_n and_o any_o thing_n in_o scripture_n beside_o the_o precise_a determination_n of_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o according_a to_o that_o four_o commandment_n the_o just_a proportion_n of_o necessary_a and_o sufficient_a time_n for_o religion_n which_o we_o shall_v take_v to_o task_n ere_o we_o make_v a_o end_n of_o this_o question_n in_o this_o chapter_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o go_v on_o to_o a_o four_o argument_n if_o the_o church_n have_v authority_n to_o determine_v the_o chief_a time_n for_o all_o its_o member_n worship_n xxviii_o argument_n 4._o the_o church_n can_v determine_v time_n for_o family_n or_o solitary_a worship_n than_o it_o have_v authority_n to_o determine_v the_o continuance_n so_o lareg_o to_o extend_v beyond_o the_o public_a worship_n even_o to_o take_v in_o both_o domestic_a worship_n where_o it_o may_v be_v have_v and_o special_o solitary_a worship_n by_o every_o christian_a apart_o before_z and_o after_o the_o public_a worship_n but_o the_o church_n have_v no_o authority_n to_o determine_v of_o continuance_n so_o large_o as_o to_o extend_v beyond_o the_o public_a worship_n even_o to_o take_v in_o both_o family_n worship_n where_o it_o may_v be_v have_v and_o special_o solitary_a worship_n by_o every_o christian_a apart_o before_z and_o after_o the_o public_a worship_n ergo_fw-la the_o church_n have_v no_o authority_n to_o determine_v the_o chief_a time_n for_o all_o its_o member_n the_o consequence_n have_v be_v prove_v before_o at_o large_a in_o the_o former_a chapter_n that_o the_o continuance_n of_o the_o chief_a time_n must_v be_v so_o large_a as_o not_o only_o to_o allow_v but_o to_o necessitate_v before_o and_o after_o the_o public_a worship_n family_n worship_n also_o where_o it_o may_v be_v have_v and_o however_o to_o necessitate_v as_o well_o as_o to_o afford_v liberty_n for_o solitary_a worship_n by_o every_o one_o apart_o the_o antecedent_n may_v be_v thus_o strengthen_v 1._o it_o be_v usual_o say_a that_o the_o sword_n nor_o the_o key_n meddle_v not_o within_o door_n that_o be_v neither_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n nor_o the_o church-governors_n take_v upon_o they_o to_o make_v affirmative_a law_n for_o private_a family_n for_o negative_a they_o do_v in_o reference_n to_o what_o they_o do_v among_o themselves_o not_o direct_o concern_v the_o service_n of_o the_o church_n or_o state_n and_o lest_o of_o all_o do_v they_o meddle_v with_o their_o time_n of_o which_o every_o governor_n of_o a_o family_n be_v count_v lord_n and_o master_n or_o lady_n and_o mistress_n for_o themselves_o and_o all_o under_o their_o authority_n even_o when_o a_o man_n be_v bind_v by_o indenture_n to_o teach_v his_o apprentice_n his_o trade_n yet_o not_o at_o this_o time_n or_o that_o time_n or_o so_o long_o together_o therefore_o we_o find_v not_o that_o any_o church_n or_o christian_a magistrate_n though_o forbid_v work_n to_o all_o even_a within_o door_n upon_o such_o and_o such_o day_n have_v yet_o command_v parent_n or_o master_n to_o catechise_v their_o child_n and_o servant_n within_o door_n on_o those_o day_n precise_o or_o pray_v with_o they_o or_o examine_v they_o what_o they_o have_v learn_v in_o public_a or_o any_o such_o like_a duty_n of_o religion_n 2._o but_o special_o in_o reference_n to_o solitary_a worship_n secret_a prayer_n secret_a thanksgiving_n secret_a meditation_n of_o the_o word_n hear_v or_o of_o any_o other_o heavenly_a and_o divine_a matter_n concern_v god_n and_o the_o soul_n the_o church_n have_v no_o authority_n to_o determine_v any_o time_n which_o necessary_o must_v be_v spend_v in_o any_o of_o these_o duty_n or_o any_o other_o in_o secret_a of_o which_o we_o conceive_v a_o double_a reason_n 1._o because_o no_o authority_n of_o man_n be_v suppose_v to_o reach_v to_o that_o which_o neither_o themselves_o nor_o any_o other_o man_n live_v can_v ever_o come_v to_o know_v whether_o it_o be_v observe_v or_o not_o which_o be_v the_o case_n plain_o here_o no_o man_n can_v know_v nor_o all_o the_o man_n in_o world_n when_o i_o retire_v myself_o any_o day_n and_o shut_v myself_o up_o in_o my_o chamber_n whether_o i_o pray_v or_o meditate_v or_o perform_v any_o other_o solitary_a worship_n to_o god_n or_o not_o unless_o i_o tell_v they_o afterward_o or_o speak_v so_o loud_o as_o that_o they_o overhear_v i_o which_o i_o be_o not_o bind_v to_o do_v or_o rather_o be_o bind_v not_o to_o do_v it_o be_v altogether_o vain_a to_o say_v no_o more_o to_o determine_v and_o command_v that_o which_o no_o account_n can_v be_v take_v of_o by_o those_o that_o command_v it_o or_o by_o any_o man_n else_o whether_o it_o be_v obey_v or_o not_o 2._o but_o further_a secret_a duty_n and_o so_o time_n to_o be_v necessary_o employ_v in_o they_o be_v immediate_o duty_n of_o conscience_n even_o the_o most_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a that_o can_v be_v now_o no_o authority_n of_o man_n of_o the_o church_n or_o any_o other_o reach_v immediate_o to_o the_o conscience_n and_o the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a part_n of_o duty_n but_o only_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n alone_o here_o again_o the_o church_n or_o any_o superior_a may_v give_v counsel_n or_o declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n about_o such_o duty_n or_o such_o time_n to_o be_v so_o employ_v but_o can_v command_v or_o determine_v it_o whereas_o we_o be_v speak_v of_o a_o time_n that_o must_v be_v determine_v of_o which_o therefore_o the_o church_n have_v no_o authority_n if_o it_o be_v object_v that_o the_o christian_a magistrate_n answer_v xxix_o a_o exception_n answer_v or_o the_o church_n have_v authority_n to_o appoint_v a_o public_a day_n of_o fast_v and_o humiliation_n and_o this_o to_o be_v spend_v in_o religious_a duty_n as_o well_o private_a as_o public_a till_o the_o end_n of_o the_o day_n and_o if_o so_o why_o not_o for_o the_o ordinary_a chief_a solemn_a time_n we_o answer_v in_o a_o word_n sol._n sol._n that_o the_o continuance_n of_o a_o public_a fast_o be_v before_o hand_n determine_v by_o god_n in_o scripture_n
so_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o now_o the_o perpetuate_n of_o this_o number_n of_o one_o day_n in_o seven_o we_o say_v be_v by_o god_n determination_n of_o the_o four_o commandment_n still_o in_o force_n they_o say_v only_o by_o the_o church_n authority_n free_o take_v it_o up_o again_o after_o it_o be_v make_v void_a but_o against_o this_o we_o argue_v that_o the_o church_n have_v in_o their_o opinion_n authority_n to_o choose_v another_o number_n more_o frequent_a one_o of_o 6._o or_o 5._o or_o more_o rare_a though_o sometime_o they_o deny_v this_o as_o one_o of_o 8._o or_o 10._o doubt_n of_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o their_o church_n determination_n and_o so_o be_v apt_a to_o make_v a_o schism_n in_o it_o or_o from_o it_o 3._o if_o it_o be_v resolve_v once_o that_o this_o authority_n do_v certain_o belong_v to_o every_o particular_a church_n it_o will_v hardly_o be_v agree_v among_o they_o unto_o who_o it_o do_v belong_v whether_o to_o the_o minister_n or_o minister_n alone_o as_o some_o will_v think_v or_o to_o they_o and_o the_o rule_v elder_n together_o as_o other_o will_v say_v or_o to_o the_o whole_a people_n with_o they_o that_o be_v all_o the_o man_n grow_v unless_o that_o of_o troas_n be_v by_o any_o other_o apostle_n will_v have_v offer_v to_o have_v make_v so_o important_a a_o determination_n without_o the_o apostle_n or_o some_o other_o of_o the_o and_o the_o good_a of_o every_o christian_a soul_n namely_o a_o new_a proportion_n of_o continuance_n and_o frequency_n for_o the_o chief_a time_n to_o religion_n and_o a_o new_a day_n for_o it_o as_o have_v no_o rule_n whereby_o possible_o to_o guide_v themselves_o steady_o in_o the_o make_n of_o this_o determination_n of_o the_o chief_a time_n necessary_a and_o sufficient_a for_o whatsoever_o we_o take_v into_o consideration_n that_o may_v seem_v to_o make_v towards_o a_o rule_n will_n and_o do_v render_v it_o more_o perplex_v either_o call_n for_o so_o much_o as_o man_n
