in_o the_o ministry_n of_o his_o word_n appear_v very_o little_a for_o christ_n say_v he_o have_v labour_v in_o vain_a because_o man_n will_v not_o repent_v add_v why_o this_o complaint_n be_v add_v nor_o turn_v to_o god_n by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o heavenly_a doctrine_n it_o be_v to_o great_a purpose_n that_o the_o prophet_n add_v this_o first_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o this_o fruit_n whereof_o he_o speak_v shall_v not_o always_o appear_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n for_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v be_v ready_a to_o call_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n word_n into_o question_n and_o will_v also_o be_v bring_v to_o doubt_v whether_o this_o doctrine_n which_o be_v reject_v of_o so_o many_o with_o such_o impudency_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o no._n secondlie_o that_o we_o may_v bend_v all_o our_o force_n with_o invincible_a constancy_n to_o perform_v our_o duty_n and_o to_o commend_v the_o success_n of_o all_o our_o labour_n unto_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n who_o will_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o be_v fruitless_a in_o the_o end_n and_o thus_o the_o prophet_n mean_v to_o meet_v with_o a_o dangerous_a temptation_n that_o by_o the_o rebellion_n of_o man_n we_o shall_v not_o faint_v in_o the_o middle_n of_o our_o course_n and_o true_o christ_n so_o begin_v here_o with_o a_o complaint_n that_o he_o yet_o comfort_v himself_o by_o and_o by_o know_v that_o it_o certain_a that_o we_o be_v not_o
any_o of_o that_o honour_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o god_n see_v here_o a_o excellent_a place_n to_o convince_v such_o as_o will_v needs_o maintain_v superstition_n by_o succession_n of_o year_n as_o if_o a_o old_a error_n be_v to_o be_v hold_v for_o a_o law_n verse_n 8._o thus_o say_v the_o lord_n as_o the_o wine_n be_v find_v in_o the_o cluster_n and_o one_o say_v destroy_v it_o not_o for_o a_o not_o superfluous_a for_o it_o be_v much_o more_o hard_a to_o look_v for_o the_o succour_n of_o god_n again_o after_o we_o have_v once_o be_v deliver_v then_o to_o embrace_v the_o promise_n of_o one_o only_a deliverance_n and_o further_o although_o the_o first_o assault_n of_o the_o enemy_n do_v not_o much_o astonish_v we_o yet_o notwithstanding_o when_o we_o see_v they_o obstinate_a in_o their_o malice_n their_o hardness_n of_o heart_n weaken_v we_o of_o the_o which_o we_o have_v daily_a experience_n for_o if_o any_o danger_n present_v itself_o we_o can_v look_v for_o succour_n from_o god_n last_o if_o he_o do_v we_o good_a and_o succour_v we_o every_o day_n 26.4_o we_o must_v not_o content_v ourselves_o to_o have_v put_v our_o confidence_n in_o god_n for_o once_o or_o twice_o but_o we_o do_v i_o doubt_v but_o cyrus_n himself_o be_v much_o amaze_v when_o he_o understand_v that_o god_n have_v appoint_v he_o to_o be_v the_o shepherd_n and_o leader_n of_o his_o people_n israel_n yea_o be_v utter_o unworthy_a of_o it_o yet_o he_o do_v this_o in_o such_o wise_a as_o the_o wicked_a receive_v no_o fruit_n at_o all_o by_o it_o for_o the_o prophet_n comprehend_v not_o those_o curse_a apostate_n as_o if_o this_o salvation_n promise_v belong_v unto_o they_o but_o only_o affirm_v that_o god_n have_v mean_n ready_a to_o make_v his_o justice_n appear_v but_o here_o it_o be_v needful_a for_o we_o to_o consider_v in_o what_o state_n this_o people_n stand_v to_o who_o this_o speech_n be_v direct_v they_o be_v all_o in_o a_o manner_n taint_v with_o the_o sin_n of_o infidelity_n and_o those_o that_o rest_v upon_o the_o promise_n be_v but_o very_o few_o way_n all_o be_v go_v out_o of_o the_o way_n even_o the_o elect_a sometime_o show_v themselves_o but_o too_o obstinate_a so_o as_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v no_o less_o infect_v with_o this_o contagion_n than_o the_o rest_n he_o tax_v they_o all_o in_o general_a then_o as_o well_o to_o convince_v the_o reprobate_n as_o to_o gall_v the_o elect_a and_o to_o bring_v they_o into_o the_o right_a way_n but_o he_o chief_o set_v himself_o against_o the_o rebel_n as_o i_o have_v say_v who_o obstinate_o and_o stubborn_o reject_v all_o hope_n of_o grace_n and_o my_o salvation_n hereby_o it_o appear_v what_o he_o mean_v by_o the_o word_n justice_n to_o wit_n the_o help_n and_o succour_v of_o god_n promise_v in_o fit_a and_o due_a season_n to_o his_o people_n he_o take_v justice_n and_o salvation_n then_o for_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n because_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a testimony_n of_o god_n justice_n when_o he_o conserve_n and_o protect_v his_o distress_a one_o it_o be_v not_o add_v superfluous_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v far_o off_o and_o shall_v not_o tarry_v clemency_n note_v god_n great_a clemency_n for_o herein_o he_o express_v god_n exceed_v great_a mercy_n in_o that_o he_o will_v finish_v the_o course_n of_o his_o justice_n albeit_o the_o people_n shall_v resist_v the_o same_o and_o will_v from_o the_o state_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o benefit_n which_o isaiah_n possess_v the_o church_n of_o in_o this_o place_n be_v spiritual_a as_o also_o this_o brightness_n which_o he_o promise_v be_v spiritual_a this_o therefore_o belong_v to_o the_o spiritual_a kingdom_n of_o christ_n whereby_o the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n enlighten_v all_o part_n of_o the_o world_n yea_o the_o strange_a nation_n be_v enlighten_v by_o it_o to_o this_o appertain_v that_o which_o follow_v the_o lord_n shall_v arise_v upon_o thou_o for_o albeit_o he_o show_v that_o god_n favour_n shall_v appear_v by_o manifest_a sign_n and_o effect_n yet_o he_o leave_v not_o out_o that_o which_o be_v the_o principal_a namely_o that_o the_o faithful_a shall_v sensible_o perceive_v that_o he_o be_v god_n only_o thereby_o to_o signify_v that_o it_o be_v the_o especial_a gift_n of_o his_o own_o hand_n second_o doctrine_n 2_o we_o be_v to_o note_v that_o the_o church_n only_o partake_v of_o this_o brightness_n that_o be_v the_o elect_a of_o god_n whence_o it_o follow_v that_o it_o be_v no_o common_a or_o natural_a gift_n but_o such_o a_o one_o as_o with_o which_o the_o lord_n supply_v the_o common_a defect_n of_o man_n nature_n and_o hereby_o also_o we_o perceive_v that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o spark_n of_o true_a light_n church_n no_o light_n out_o of_o the_o church_n but_o in_o the_o church_n for_o all_o man_n beside_o be_v enwrap_v with_o darkness_n albeit_o they_o think_v to_o be_v in_o the_o light_n and_o that_o they_o have_v a_o great_a splendour_n neither_o can_v they_o be_v deliver_v out_o of_o this_o darkness_n but_o by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n he_o add_v the_o word_n glory_n for_o after_o the_o lord_n have_v once_o receive_v we_o into_o his_o favour_n he_o so_o continue_v the_o same_o unto_o we_o that_o his_o benefit_n do_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o flow_v in_o upon_o we_o with_o great_a increase_v verse_n 3._o and_o the_o gentile_n shall_v walk_v in_o thy_o light_n and_o king_n at_o the_o brightness_n of_o thy_o rise_n up_o follow_v a_o confirmation_n in_o this_o and_o the_o verse_n follow_v the_o prophet_n now_o confirm_v that_o which_o we_o be_v say_v to_o wit_n that_o man_n have_v no_o light_n of_o their_o own_o but_o that_o whereby_o the_o lord_n enlighten_v they_o through_o his_o word_n all_o will_v confess_v so_o much_o but_o they_o do_v not_o worthy_o esteem_v of_o this_o grace_n as_o they_o ought_v they_o only_o take_v it_o for_o some_o common_a thing_n which_o appertain_v natural_o to_o every_o man_n but_o here_o it_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v supernatural_a and_o therefore_o it_o must_v be_v distinguish_v from_o nature_n as_o the_o repetition_n of_o these_o word_n upon_o thou_o sufficient_o show_v first_o then_o let_v we_o hold_v it_o for_o certain_a that_o this_o benefit_n proceed_v only_o from_o god_n second_o that_o all_o indifferent_o do_v not_o partake_v hereof_o but_o the_o elect_n only_o who_o the_o lord_n enlightnes_n by_o his_o free_a grace_n that_o he_o may_v exempt_v they_o out_o of_o the_o common_a rank_n of_o other_o man_n now_o this_o be_v do_v by_o christ_n who_o be_v call_v the_o of_o this_o benefit_n but_o in_o seek_v this_o light_n in_o that_o word_n which_o come_v forth_o of_o judea_n and_o be_v hear_v in_o jerusalem_n where_o the_o lamp_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v kindle_v and_o from_o whence_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n cast_v his_o beam_n that_o thence_o he_o may_v afterward_o enlighten_v all_o the_o habitable_a corner_n and_o quarter_n of_o the_o earth_n as_o in_o chap._n 2.3_o we_o have_v see_v that_o the_o law_n go_v forth_o of_o zion_n there_o be_v no_o light_n then_o but_o in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o prophet_n so_o that_o whosoever_o they_o be_v that_o recoil_v back_o from_o it_o they_o false_o brag_v of_o walk_v in_o this_o light_n by_o the_o brightness_n of_o thy_o rise_n up_o he_o allude_v to_o the_o break_n of_o day_n for_o as_o the_o morning_n star_n begin_v the_o day_n by_o strike_v through_o the_o heaven_n only_o and_o forthwith_o the_o sun_n shine_v over_o all_o the_o world_n so_o the_o break_n of_o day_n begin_v first_o in_o judea_n whence_o the_o light_n arise_v and_o spread_v itself_o throughout_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o there_o be_v no_o corner_n of_o it_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o enlighten_v with_o this_o light_n he_o mention_n king_n person_n this_o light_n belong_v as_o well_o to_o king_n as_o to_o common_a person_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o imagine_v this_o light_n belong_v to_o the_o common_a people_n only_o but_o to_o prince_n and_o great_a lord_n who_o otherwise_o do_v much_o please_v themselves_o in_o their_o dignity_n true_o the_o honour_n which_o he_o here_o attribute_n to_o the_o church_n be_v exceed_o great_a see_v her_o brightness_n shall_v be_v so_o glorious_a that_o it_o shall_v draw_v unto_o she_o christ_n as_o the_o moon_n draw_v her_o light_n from_o the_o sun_n so_o the_o church_n borrow_v her_o light_n from_o christ_n king_n and_o nation_n he_o call_v it_o the_o church_n light_n not_o because_o she_o have_v any_o light_n of_o herself_o but_o in_o regard_n she_o borrow_v it_o from_o christ_n as_o the_o moon_n take_v her_o light_n from_o the_o sun_n verse_n 4._o lift_v up_o thy_o eye_n round_o about_o and_o behold_v all_o these_o be_v gather_v and_o come_v be_v so_o perplex_v and_o confuse_a for_o than_o none_o but_o the_o kingdom_n of_o judah_n stand_v which_o daily_o decay_v till_o at_o last_o it_o fall_v flat_a to_o the_o ground_n afterward_o when_o the_o people_n be_v carry_v away_o captive_a all_o thing_n grow_v so_o desperate_a in_o these_o horrible_a scatter_n and_o woeful_a ruin_n that_o as_o it_o seem_v the_o church_n be_v utter_o abolish_v it_o be_v needful_a therefore_o that_o this_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v many_o way_n confirm_v that_o man_n mind_n which_o of_o themselves_o be_v too_o much_o incline_v by_o nature_n to_o distrust_n distrust_v man_n incline_v overmuch_o by_o nature_n to_o distrust_v may_v no_o long_o remain_v entangle_v with_o doubt_n for_o this_o cause_n then_o he_o bring_v the_o jew_n as_o it_o be_v to_z the_o thing_n do_v notwithstanding_o it_o be_v yet_o far_o off_o to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v assure_v themselves_o no_o less_o of_o the_o accomplishment_n thereof_o then_o if_o the_o thing_n be_v already_o effect_v before_o their_o eye_n now_o he_o command_v the_o faithful_a to_o lift_v up_o their_o eye_n on_o high_a that_o be_v to_o say_v above_o all_o humane_a thought_n for_o while_o we_o remain_v fix_v to_o outward_a appearance_n we_o can_v savour_v the_o fruit_n of_o these_o promise_n he_o add_v round_o about_o that_o they_o may_v certain_o know_v the_o people_n shall_v not_o come_v from_o one_o nation_n alone_o but_o from_o all_o part_n to_o
shall_v be_v prosesecute_v the_o same_o argument_n still_o prosesecute_v when_o those_o that_o persecute_a or_o despise_v the_o church_n shall_v come_v to_o prostrate_v themselves_o humble_o before_o her_o foot_n and_o with_o their_o whole_a heart_n shall_v submit_v themselves_o to_o her_o service_n by_o the_o child_n of_o those_o that_o afflict_a she_o he_o mean_v the_o tyrant_n and_o persecuter_n which_o vex_v she_o now_o this_o be_v partly_o accomplish_v when_o the_o jew_n return_v into_o their_o country_n but_o this_o return_n be_v but_o a_o obscure_a shadow_n of_o that_o deliverance_n which_o we_o have_v obtain_v by_o christ_n thus_o these_o thing_n than_o be_v true_o accomplish_v under_o christ_n kingdom_n yet_o so_o that_o we_o must_v wait_v for_o the_o perfect_a consummation_n thereof_o till_o his_o second_o come_v as_o in_o another_o place_n before_o we_o have_v note_v but_o will_v some_o say_v quest_n be_v not_o this_o honour_n whereof_o the_o prophet_n speak_v too_o excessive_a and_o great_a than_o of_o right_n belong_v to_o the_o church_n for_o to_o bow_v and_o fall_v down_o upon_o the_o ground_n be_v such_o sign_n of_o honour_n which_o no_o mortal_a man_n ought_v to_o accept_v of_o i_o answer_v ans_fw-fr that_o this_o honour_n be_v not_o make_v to_o the_o member_n but_o to_o the_o head_n which_o be_v christ_n christ_n this_o honour_n not_o do_v to_o the_o church_n but_o to_o the_o head_n christ_n who_o be_v worship_v in_o the_o church_n and_o those_o who_o hate_v and_o persecute_v he_o before_o come_v now_o to_o do_v he_o this_o reverence_n now_o we_o say_v that_o christ_n be_v adore_v in_o the_o church_n not_o according_a to_o the_o popish_a opinion_n who_o think_v they_o indeed_o worship_n christ_n whilst_o they_o kneel_v before_o that_o roman_a idol_n idol_n the_o roman_a idol_n to_o kiss_v his_o patofle_a those_o in_o favour_n of_o who_o this_o be_v affirm_v hate_n and_o reject_v such_o a_o doctrine_n they_o only_a honour_n christ_n then_o who_o obey_v his_o voice_n as_o also_o the_o prophet_n say_v that_o the_o stranger_n which_o be_v out_o of_o the_o church_n shall_v willing_o submit_v themselves_o to_o yield_v obedience_n unto_o christ_n who_o majesty_n shine_v in_o the_o doctrine_n which_o himself_o administer_v by_o the_o service_n of_o man_n and_o shall_v call_v thou_o etc._n etc._n the_o these_o promise_n because_o we_o break_v off_o the_o course_n of_o god_n work_v by_o our_o infidelity_n and_o by_o our_o own_o forwardness_n we_o lose_v the_o profit_n which_o we_o may_v reap_v from_o the_o same_o to_o conclude_v we_o be_v always_o to_o remember_v that_o which_o i_o have_v so_o often_o tell_v you_o namely_o that_o the_o prophet_n speak_v not_o of_o year_n here_o or_o of_o a_o few_o day_n but_o comprehend_v the_o whole_a course_n of_o our_o redemption_n from_o the_o end_n of_o the_o captivity_n until_o the_o publish_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o successive_o till_o he_o shall_v give_v up_o the_o kingdom_n to_o god_n his_o father_n verse_n 16._o thou_o shall_v also_o suck_v the_o milk_n of_o the_o gentile_n and_o shall_v suck_v the_o breast_n of_o the_o king_n and_o thou_o shall_v know_v that_o i_o the_o lord_n be_o thy_o saviour_n and_o thy_o redeemer_n the_o mighty_a one_o of_o jaakob_n he_o speak_v of_o the_o spread_a forth_o of_o the_o church_n but_o it_o of_o all_o and_o that_o by_o a_o small_a remnant_n as_o a_o brand_n recover_v out_o of_o the_o fire_n and_o the_o seed_n thereof_o be_v scatter_v far_o and_o wide_o through_o all_o the_o quarter_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v though_o thou_o be_v now_o enclose_v within_o straight_o and_o very_o narrow_a bound_n and_o have_v nothing_o in_o common_a with_o the_o gentile_n yet_o so_o it_o be_v that_o thou_o shall_v receive_v from_o they_o much_o fruit_n in_o abundance_n by_o milk_n and_o breast_n he_o mean_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o service_n and_o obedience_n which_o the_o gentile_n shall_v render_v to_o the_o church_n to_o nourish_v her_o offspring_n for_o have_v sâ—id_v before_o that_o of_o a_o handful_n shall_v proceed_v a_o infinite_a number_n of_o child_n now_o he_o provide_v milk_n to_o suckle_v they_o with_o until_o they_o be_v come_v of_o sufficient_a age_n and_o he_o express_o speak_v of_o king_n in_o regard_n it_o be_v the_o hard_a to_o be_v believe_v and_o thus_o king_n by_o the_o way_n be_v admonish_v of_o their_o duty_n duty_n king_n admonish_v of_o their_o duty_n who_o if_o they_o will_v discharge_v the_o same_o as_o they_o ought_v then_o must_v they_o be_v servant_n of_o the_o church_n otherwise_o the_o lord_n will_v call_v they_o to_o account_v for_o it_o and_o we_o know_v what_o david_n pronounce_v in_o the_o second_o psalm_n verse_n 10.11_o but_o we_o must_v note_v after_o what_o manner_n the_o church_n shall_v suck_v the_o milk_n and_o the_o breast_n of_o the_o gentile_n for_o she_o be_v not_o permit_v whole_o to_o draw_v in_o unto_o herself_o all_o the_o ability_n and_o riches_n of_o the_o world_n but_o only_o thereby_o to_o preserve_v she_o own_o estate_n in_o safety_n for_o can_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n be_v more_o contrary_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o church_n then_o to_o be_v a_o insatiable_a gulf_n gulf_n no_o 〈◊〉_d mo_z e_fw-es contrary_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o true_a church_n then_o to_o become_v a_o insatiable_a gulf_n swallow_v up_o into_o her_o belly_n whatsoever_o she_o may_v come_v by_o these_o thing_n therefore_o must_v be_v refer_v to_o the_o spiritual_a estate_n of_o the_o church_n namely_o that_o by_o mean_n hereof_o god_n may_v be_v pure_o
