such_o parent_n and_o yet_o further_o for_o the_o make_v it_o more_o probable_a that_o these_o household_n say_v to_o be_v baptize_v at_o least_o some_o in_o or_o of_o they_o be_v indeed_o baptize_v tender_a but_o will_v be_v unto_o they_o so_o as_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v a_o actual_a and_o personal_a interest_n in_o it_o upon_o the_o lord_n call_v of_o they_o or_o which_o be_v all_o one_o upon_o their_o repentance_n and_o that_o the_o apostle_n do_v eye_n and_o intend_v their_o personal_a interest_n in_o the_o promise_n either_o as_o at_o present_a according_a to_o the_o first_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n or_o future_a to_o be_v obtain_v by_o their_o repentance_n according_a to_o the_o latter_a be_v evident_a because_o otherwise_o the_o have_v of_o the_o promise_n to_o they_o will_v have_v be_v no_o sufficient_a ground_n for_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n to_o baptism_n neither_o can_v he_o rational_o make_v it_o a_o motive_n to_o they_o to_o be_v baptize_v so_o that_o according_a to_o the_o latter_a interpretation_n of_o the_o apostle_n word_n it_o be_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v the_o promise_n be_v to_o you_o by_o way_n of_o offer_n and_o tender_v at_o present_a therefore_o repent_v whereby_o you_o shall_v have_v a_o actual_a interest_n in_o it_o and_o thereupon_o be_v baptize_v and_o that_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v to_o repentance_n only_o and_o not_o both_o to_o baptism_n and_o repentance_n in_o order_n to_o their_o have_v a_o actual_a interest_n in_o the_o promise_n be_v past_o all_o doubt_n in_o as_o much_o as_o baptism_n must_v necessary_o follow_v upon_o and_o not_o precede_v interest_n in_o the_o promise_n as_o a_o mean_n either_o by_o itself_o or_o as_o a_o joint_a mean_n with_o repentance_n to_o obtain_v that_o interest_n so_o
that_o i_o say_v his_o meaning_n must_v be_v this_o repent_v that_o you_o may_v have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n and_o upon_o your_o repentance_n be_v baptize_v for_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n for_o then_o the_o promise_n be_v to_o you_o that_o be_v you_o then_o will_v have_v a_o actual_a right_n to_o and_o interest_n in_o it_o so_o that_o take_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n which_o way_n you_o will_v it_o be_v all_o one_o as_o to_o my_o present_a purpose_n in_o as_o much_o as_o he_o ground_n his_o exhortation_n to_o baptism_n upon_o actual_a interest_n in_o the_o promise_n or_o make_v that_o the_o motive_n to_o excite_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o baptism_n now_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n be_v the_o ground_n upon_o which_o or_o the_o motive_n by_o which_o the_o apostle_n press_v they_o to_o baptism_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n for_o the_o application_n of_o baptism_n and_o consequent_o whoever_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n may_v due_o and_o right_o have_v baptism_n apply_v unto_o they_o object_n but_o it_o will_v be_v object_v the_o apostle_n conjoyn_v repentance_n and_o baptism_n in_o his_o exhortation_n and_o therefore_o they_o can_v be_v separate_v in_o practice_n answ_n 1._o to_o that_o i_o answer_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o though_o the_o apostle_n conjoyn_v these_o two_o duty_n in_o his_o exhortation_n yea_o though_o he_o shall_v ground_v his_o exhortation_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o both_o upon_o the_o same_o foundation_n viz._n interest_n in_o and_o right_a to_o the_o promise_n yet_o that_o do_v not_o necessary_o imply_v a_o inseparable_a connexion_n between_o they_o in_o practice_n two_o duite_n may_v be_v conjoin_v in_o a_o exhortation_n and_o both_o move_v to_o upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ground_n and_o yet_o be_v separable_a in_o their_o practice_n and_o then_o either_o of_o these_o duty_n may_v be_v press_v to_o and_o answerable_o practise_v apart_o upon_o that_o ground_n let_v we_o see_v it_o in_o these_o two_o duty_n of_o repentance_n and_o baptism_n exhort_v to_o by_o the_o apostle_n it_o be_v evident_a the_o apostle_n exhort_v to_o these_o two_o duty_n with_o reference_n to_o two_o distinct_a end_n the_o one_o viz._n repentance_n with_o reference_n to_o their_o obtain_v a_o actual_a interest_n in_o the_o promise_n suppose_v that_o be_v want_v or_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o removal_n of_o a_o special_a bar_n which_o at_o present_a lay_n in_o the_o way_n of_o their_o baptism_n suppose_v they_o to_o have_v a_o present_a interest_n in_o it_o the_o other_o viz._n baptism_n with_o reference_n to_o the_o confirmation_n of_o their_o faith_n in_o or_o their_o assurance_n of_o their_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o good_a promise_v upon_o supposition_n of_o a_o precedent_a interest_n in_o the_o promise_n now_o when_o these_o two_o end_n be_v separate_v as_o in_o respect_n of_o many_o they_o may_v be_v sometime_o repentance_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v press_v to_o and_o practise_v when_o baptism_n be_v unnecessary_a as_o in_o case_n of_o a_o believer_n fall_v into_o sin_n after_o baptism_n so_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n baptism_n may_v be_v exhort_v to_o and_o practise_v when_o yet_o repentance_n or_o the_o profession_n of_o repentance_n be_v no_o way_n necessary_a as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o christ_n baptism_n so_o in_o john_n baptist_n case_n suppose_v he_o he_o be_v sanctify_v in_o the_o womb_n to_o have_v keep_v up_o the_o due_a exercise_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n from_o his_o infancy_n now_o in_o these_o case_n these_o two_o duty_n be_v inseparable_a in_o practice_n and_o in_o such_o case_n either_o of_o they_o may_v be_v distinct_o and_o several_o press_v to_o upon_o this_o ground_n what_o be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o bottom_v a_o exhortation_n upon_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o two_o duty_n must_v needs_o suppose_v these_o duty_n be_v inseparable_a in_o their_o practice_n be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o bottom_v a_o exhortation_n to_o either_o of_o they_o apart_o upon_o so_o that_o though_o these_o two_o duty_n be_v conjoin_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o his_o exhortation_n and_o both_o exhort_v to_o upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ground_n yet_o they_o be_v separable_a in_o practice_n either_o of_o they_o may_v be_v exhort_v to_o and_o practise_v upon_o that_o ground_n according_a to_o the_o case_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o party_n concern_v in_o they_o whoever_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n in_o case_n of_o the_o commission_n of_o any_o sin_n may_v be_v exhort_v to_o repentance_n upon_o that_o sole_a ground_n of_o his_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n so_o whoever_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v exhort_v to_o baptism_n upon_o that_o sole_a ground_n of_o his_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n a_o exhortation_n to_o both_o take_v either_o conjunctive_o or_o several_o may_v be_v rightful_o ground_v upon_o the_o person_n interest_n in_o the_o promise_n hence_o second_o i_o answer_v let_v it_o be_v grant_v that_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v those_o tremble_a jew_n to_o repentance_n as_o a_o necessary_a prerequisite_a to_o their_o baptism_n yet_o that_o be_v only_o either_o in_o order_n to_o the_o confirm_v continue_a and_o visible_o manifest_v their_o precedent_a interest_n in_o the_o promise_n or_o remove_v that_o special_a bar_n that_o lie_v in_o the_o way_n of_o their_o baptism_n it_o be_v their_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v the_o proper_a ground_n upon_o which_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v they_o to_o baptism_n repentance_n be_v no_o further_o necessary_a unto_o baptism_n then_o as_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n and_o a_o external_a discovery_n of_o that_o interest_n to_o the_o administrator_n of_o baptism_n as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o person_n afore_o unconvert_v or_o for_o the_o remove_n some_o special_a bar_n lie_v in_o the_o way_n of_o baptism_n as_o in_o case_n of_o believer_n fall_v into_o sin_n afore_o the_o application_n of_o baptism_n unto_o they_o in_o case_n interest_n in_o the_o promise_n may_v be_v know_v when_o repentance_n be_v not_o upon_o such_o account_n incumbent_a as_o a_o duty_n that_o be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n upon_o which_o to_o move_v unto_o and_o apply_v baptism_n and_o that_o which_o strong_o persuade_v we_o to_o judge_v that_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v to_o repentance_n not_o as_o simple_o and_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o baptism_n at_o all_o time_n and_o in_o all_o case_n but_o only_o as_o necessary_a in_o their_o special_a case_n and_o in_o case_n parallel_v with_o they_o be_v not_o only_o his_o ground_v his_o exhortation_n to_o both_o these_o duty_n upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ground_n thereby_o plain_o declare_v their_o rightful_a practice_n as_o conjunctive_o when_o the_o case_n so_o require_v so_o separately_z or_o each_o a_o part_n by_o themselves_o when_o either_o of_o they_o be_v not_o necessary_a or_o practicable_a by_o the_o party_n concern_v in_o they_o upon_o that_o sole_a ground_n but_o the_o whole_a reference_n that_o baptism_n have_v to_o the_o promise_n or_o the_o soul_n interest_n in_o it_o baptism_n have_v no_o necessary_a reference_n unto_o repentance_n as_o already_o perform_v so_o as_o its_o antecedency_n shall_v be_v indispensable_o require_v in_o order_n to_o a_o right_a application_n of_o it_o neither_o have_v repentance_n any_o necessary_a reference_n to_o baptism_n so_o as_o that_o baptism_n may_v not_o be_v administer_v but_o upon_o supposition_n of_o its_o antecedency_n as_o we_o see_v in_o the_o case_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o john_n baptist_n as_o before_o note_v but_o baptism_n have_v a_o direct_a reference_n to_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o soul_n interest_n in_o that_o and_o therefore_o when_o repentance_n be_v require_v as_o a_o necessary_a prerequisite_a to_o baptism_n it_o be_v only_o upon_o some_o of_o the_o account_n before_o mention_v it_o be_v interest_n in_o the_o promise_n that_o the_o apostle_n ground_n his_o exhortation_n to_o baptism_n upon_o and_o consequent_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n for_o the_o application_n of_o baptism_n now_o that_o the_o infant-seed_n of_o believe_a parent_n have_v a_o right_n to_o and_o interest_n in_o that_o promise_n have_v be_v already_o prove_v and_o reveive_v no_o little_a confirmation_n from_o this_o text_n of_o the_o apostle_n
