work_v to_o attain_v god_n or_o christ_n now_o the_o soul_n be_v false_o lead_v out_o by_o his_o own_o heart_n he_o instead_o of_o come_v to_o christ_n only_o rest_v upon_o his_o bare_a apprehension_n of_o this_o in_o the_o letter_n from_o his_o sutability_n to_o it_o in_o his_o own_o spirit_n and_o here_o he_o feed_v and_o remain_v with_o ease_n comfort_n and_o peace_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n and_o this_o he_o make_v his_o tabernacle_n though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o scripture_n be_v give_v to_o be_v a_o visible_a testimony_n or_o declaration_n of_o god_n or_o christ_n according_a to_o which_o god_n work_v in_o man_n yet_o they_o be_v never_o give_v to_o be_v a_o inward_a testimony_n or_o a_o rest_n unto_o man_n but_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o letter_n must_v be_v both_o reveal_v know_v and_o judge_v of_o by_o the_o spirit_n and_o not_o the_o spirit_n especial_o in_o internal_n by_o the_o externall_n letter_n neither_o qualification_n in_o man_n suitable_a to_o the_o letter_n in_o man_n apprehension_n be_v a_o ground_n of_o faith_n or_o rest_n without_o a_o inward_a testimony_n and_o manifestation_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o these_o qualification_n the_o eleven_o false_a rest_n the_o next_o rest_n in_o order_n to_o this_o upon_o which_o man_n centre_n their_o spirit_n and_o make_v their_o tabernacle_n be_v the_o use_n and_o application_n of_o the_o conceive_a and_o imagine_a extent_n of_o christ_n death_n which_o be_v so_o full_o declare_v in_o the_o letter_n without_o any_o more_o they_o believe_v it_o upon_o this_o testimony_n and_o here_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o joy_n peace_n assurance_n and_o rest_n now_o i_o shall_v not_o go_v about_o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o any_o point_n of_o judgement_n in_o reference_n to_o any_o particular_a faction_n but_o to_o come_v to_o lay_v open_a my_o own_o experience_n and_o false_a rest_n which_o in_o so_o do_v i_o may_v come_v to_o lay_v open_a a_o way_n whereby_o those_o that_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o same_o deceit_n may_v come_v to_o see_v it_o in_o themselves_o and_o so_o may_v from_o sad_a experience_n seal_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o we_o be_v say_v for_o many_o who_o have_v go_v through_o this_o dispensation_n and_o have_v believe_v this_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n when_o now_o alas_o they_o see_v that_o they_o be_v both_o ignorant_a of_o what_o this_o christ_n be_v or_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o his_o death_n want_v the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o in_o themselves_o now_o the_o terror_n of_o death_n have_v or_o do_v seize_v upon_o they_o and_o instead_o of_o be_v joy_n and_o peace_n unto_o they_o it_o have_v produce_v death_n and_o sorrow_n in_o they_o but_o first_o of_o all_o this_o soul_n who_o be_v thus_o rest_a upon_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o he_o see_v the_o scripture_n say_v he_o give_v himself_o a_o ransom_n for_o all_o the_o conclusion_n be_v this_o of_o such_o a_o spirit_n if_o for_o all_o then_o for_o i_o and_o this_o he_o believe_v and_o this_o say_v he_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o true_a faith_n when_o he_o be_v altogether_o decive_v for_o the_o ground_n of_o faith_n be_v something_o out_o of_o the_o creature_n in_o god_n before_o time_n reveal_v and_o make_v manifest_a from_o god_n to_o the_o soul_n in_o time_n upon_o which_o the_o soul_n build_v his_o faith_n rest_v upon_o it_o and_o be_v keep_v unto_o all_o time_n in_o the_o glory_n and_o splendour_n of_o it_o but_o the_o soul_n want_v this_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n of_o discovery_n he_o make_v the_o other_o the_o ground_n of_o his_o confidence_n for_o refreshment_n peace_n safety_n and_o happiness_n and_o he_o conclude_v first_o that_o no_o true_a faith_n can_v be_v but_o this_o second_o that_o none_o have_v any_o ground_n to_o believe_v but_o upon_o this_o ground_n when_o the_o poor_a heart_n be_v altogether_o ignorant_a in_o his_o own_o breast_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n come_v to_o reveal_v truth_n yea_o himself_o in_o his_o son_n by_o his_o spirit_n whereas_o now_o man_n ground_n of_o his_o happiness_n lie_v not_o in_o a_o misunderstand_v scripture_n without_o he_o but_o in_o a_o right_n discern_v reveal_v and_o know_v god_n within_o he_o three_o this_o soul_n daily_o increase_v in_o the_o assurance_n of_o this_o his_o rest_n by_o his_o daily_a study_n pain_n and_o diligence_n wherein_o he_o fill_v his_o head_n with_o so_o much_o of_o the_o scripture_n as_o indeed_o he_o make_v it_o so_o glorious_a as_o it_o conquer_v his_o spirit_n and_o many_o more_o into_o a_o follace_n himself_o in_o this_o very_a particular_a when_o indeed_o he_o be_v miss_v the_o chees_a good_a which_o be_v the_o life_n of_o he_o who_o put_v a_o end_n of_o all_o controversy_n to_o all_o such_o dispute_n when_o he_o come_v to_o appear_v in_o the_o spirit_n but_o alas_o before_o no_o marvel_n though_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v run_v from_o mountain_n to_o hill_n though_o he_o forget_v he_o who_o be_v the_o rest_a place_n of_o zion_n therefore_o soul_n thou_o that_o make_v thy_o habitation_n among_o the_o brier_n and_o thorn_n and_o barren_a mountain_n arise_v these_o be_v not_o thy_o rest_n they_o be_v from_o a_o corrupt_a transfigure_v glorify_v christ_n so_o as_o now_o he_o be_v make_v his_o habitation_n not_o among_o the_o beast_n of_o the_o field_n in_o his_o former_a fancy_n and_o fleshly_a teach_n but_o in_o the_o spiritual_a heaven_n where_o live_v all_o just_a man_n make_v perfect_a and_o all_o perfect_a man_n make_v to_o live_v by_o or_o in_o the_o life_n of_o god_n or_o christ_n so_o as_o he_o be_v change_v into_o glory_n and_o his_o rest_n be_v make_v glorious_a six_o when_o this_o be_v come_v to_o pass_v man_n shall_v know_v real_o the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n and_o why_o it_o be_v call_v a_o mystery_n and_o that_o same_o spirit_n shall_v know_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n discover_v to_o the_o conscience_n come_v as_o it_o be_v from_o god_n and_o the_o keep_n and_o exercise_v of_o the_o mystery_n of_o that_o faith_n in_o a_o pure_a conscience_n to_o god_n and_o that_o believe_a be_v not_o faith_n as_o it_o pure_o come_v from_o god_n discover_v itself_o and_o the_o mystery_n thereof_o to_o the_o conscience_n but_o it_o be_v the_o exercise_n of_o that_o say_a mystery_n of_o faith_n by_o god_n in_o conscience_n to_o god_n so_o that_o the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n in_o itself_o be_v one_o thing_n and_o believe_v and_o dependency_n upon_o christ_n if_o true_a be_v another_o thing_n but_o the_o effect_n or_o exercise_v of_o the_o mysteriousnesse_n of_o faith_n in_o a_o conscience_n which_o be_v pure_a to_o or_o upon_o a_o god_n that_o be_v pure_a seven_o man_n may_v believe_v christ_n die_v for_o they_o and_o from_o this_o believe_a may_v practice_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v require_v by_o he_o yea_o may_v have_v much_o peace_n &_o joy_n in_o the_o same_o and_o in_o this_o his_o own_o work_n
to_o express_v in_o conclusion_n it_o attain_v matter_n to_o express_v and_o in_o the_o attain_n matter_n do_v much_o abuse_n the_o same_o but_o the_o mean_v most_o common_o wherein_o it_o do_v attain_v it_o be_v first_o by_o often_o frequent_v private_a and_o public_a meeting_n where_o it_o steal_v away_o the_o expression_n of_o other_o and_o when_o it_o see_v one_o man_n enlarge_v it_o be_v make_v to_o admire_v that_o part_n in_o they_o and_o cry_v out_o o_o if_o i_o can_v pray_v as_o such_o a_o one_o can_v than_o i_o shall_v be_v at_o rest_n and_o enjoy_v much_o peace_n it_o press_v forward_o and_o by_o pain_n and_o diligence_n it_o attain_v that_o enlargement_n as_o that_o now_o it_o excel_v other_o and_o be_v now_o admire_v by_o they_o who_o before_o be_v admire_v by_o it_o so_o as_o now_o the_o poor_a creature_n can_v speak_v three_o or_o four_o hour_n in_o prayer_n and_o can_v hardly_o comprehend_v himself_o within_o the_o space_n of_o one_o hour_n and_o here_o lie_v the_o deceit_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o here_o the_o soul_n make_v his_o rest_n and_o this_o to_o be_v a_o sure_a evidence_n of_o his_o interest_n in_o god_n but_o alas_o how_o blind_a and_o unsound_a this_o present_a evidence_n be_v let_v scripture_n and_o experience_n testify_v for_o alas_o a_o hypocrite_n or_o one_o who_o at_o all_o know_v not_o god_n may_v excel_v in_o the_o seem_a glory_n of_o this_o part_n yea_o excel_v those_o that_o live_v in_o the_o high_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n and_o here_o many_o soul_n make_v this_o dispensation_n a_o mere_a idol_n they_o draw_v all_o their_o peace_n and_o comfort_n from_o it_o for_o if_o in_o this_o part_n the_o creature_n excel_v he_o will_v be_v the_o often_o use_v of_o it_o live_v most_o upon_o it_o draw_v most_o comfort_n from_o it_o and_o glory_v the_o most_o in_o it_o for_o if_o ever_o the_o creature_n be_v straighten_a in_o this_o particular_a he_o begin_v to_o droop_v and_o be_v sad_a and_o full_a of_o trouble_n but_o if_o either_o in_o public_a or_o private_a he_o be_v enlarge_v much_o again_o he_o be_v mighty_o refresh_v and_o lift_v up_o and_o second_o if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o can_v have_v those_o a_o man_n may_v pray_v long_o and_o often_o and_o excel_v all_o in_o external_a form_n and_o yet_o have_v none_o of_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n manifest_v at_o all_o in_o the_o same_o neither_o be_v a_o straightning_n of_o the_o creature_n in_o expression_n to_o be_v any_o cause_n of_o sorrow_n or_o trouble_n if_o god_n be_v manifest_a neither_o be_v it_o a_o evidence_n of_o his_o not_o be_v manifest_v within_o so_o here_o partly_o lie_v the_o ground_n of_o a_o soul_n thus_o rest_a or_o take_v satisfaction_n or_o peace_n to_o his_o spirit_n in_o this_o dispensation_n now_o i_o will_v not_o be_v mistake_v that_o i_o be_o speak_v against_o this_o form_n or_o dispensation_n when_o a_o man_n be_v not_o command_v by_o the_o form_n but_o he_o be_v command_v from_o a_o power_n within_o these_o thing_n follow_v to_o be_v consider_v of_o all_o that_o though_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v never_o so_o glorious_a or_o admirable_a in_o this_o particular_a dispensation_n so_o as_o in_o the_o same_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o speak_v a_o whole_a day_n together_o yet_o his_o heart_n in_o this_o may_v deceive_v he_o and_o if_o it_o do_v not_o yet_o it_o be_v no_o safe_a rest_n or_o cause_n of_o peace_n or_o satisfaction_n or_o there_o be_v no_o safety_n in_o the_o excellent_n part_n that_o can_v be_v receive_v but_o they_o take_v their_o wing_n and_o flee_v away_o and_o here_o be_v not_o that_o in_o they_o which_o man_n conceive_v second_o man_n may_v have_v these_o part_n in_o the_o glory_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o have_v no_o fellowship_n or_o commmnion_n with_o god_n in_o they_o and_o so_o they_o may_v be_v rather_o snare_n they_o sure_o rest_v nay_o if_o it_o be_v so_o as_o many_o soul_n do_v enjoy_v god_n in_o they_o or_o rather_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o the_o same_o yet_o it_o be_v neither_o the_o duty_n or_o enlargement_n which_o be_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o rest_n but_o god_n make_v manifest_a in_o the_o same_o the_o three_o part_n or_o gift_n be_v humility_n and_o this_o sometime_o come_v some_o of_o these_o way_n follow_v 1._o either_o from_o a_o instinct_n or_o property_n in_o nature_n oâ—_n 2._o from_o a_o self-reasoning_a or_o 3_o from_o resemble_v the_o truth_n of_o humility_n that_o be_v in_o another_o or_o 4._o from_o or_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n first_o it_o be_v in_o many_o who_o in_o the_o least_o have_v no_o divinâ—_n working_n of_o god_n in_o they_o any_o way_n make_v manifest_a yet_o they_o be_v excellent_a in_o this_o very_a particular_a which_o make_v they_o very_o lovely_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o man_n so_o that_o a_o little_a of_o god_n will_v be_v see_v in_o such_o a_o creature_n but_o mere_o without_o the_o manifestation_n of_o grace_n such_o soul_n do_v appear_v to_o be_v gracious_a such_o a_o spirit_n as_o this_o â—_o can_v hardly_o be_v give_v to_o passion_n but_o full_a of_o meekness_n and_o love_n and_o moderation_n and_o yet_o this_o party_n gift_n aâ—_n common_a or_o natural_a to_o he_o he_o can_v be_v almoâ—_n otherwise_o this_o disposition_n be_v so_o natural_a but_o other_o bâ—_n nature_n be_v of_o a_o turbulent_a spirit_n and_o full_a of_o pride_n anâ—_n choler_n which_o make_v he_o to_o become_v odious_a to_o all_o and_o hererupon_o when_o he_o become_v odious_a to_o himself_o he_o fall_v in_o the_o second_o place_n to_o reason_n thus_o o_o how_o lovely_a do_v other_o appear_v to_o i_o how_o humble_a and_o low_o be_v they_o what_o a_o proud_a spirit_n be_o i_o of_o how_o be_o hate_v and_o become_v almost_o odious_a to_o all_o i_o will_v go_v see_v if_o i_o can_v help_v this_o carriage_n of_o i_o now_o this_o soul_n one_o look_n to_o take_v away_o the_o effect_n though_o the_o cause_n abide_v and_o here_o he_o labour_v to_o frame_v his_o speech_n and_o his_o jesture_n and_o action_n and_o so_o by_o much_o pain_n get_v a_o form_n of_o humility_n and_o now_o carry_v himself_o very_o sweet_o towards_o all_o so_o that_o now_o there_o be_v a_o strong_a change_n wrought_v in_o this_o person_n so_o that_o he_o be_v admire_v by_o all_o and_o chief_o by_o himself_o who_o be_v of_o such_o a_o high_a carriage_n and_o of_o a_o proud_a and_o turbulent_a spirit_n and_o now_o he_o be_v of_o a_o calm_a and_o quiet_a spirit_n this_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o great_a change_n and_o so_o judge_v of_o it_o he_o be_v high_o exalt_v in_o his_o opinion_n of_o himself_o and_o conceive_v he_o have_v enjoy_v abundance_n of_o grace_n from_o god_n that_o have_v thus_o humble_v he_o when_o indeed_o he_o have_v it_o but_o in_o the_o form_n of_o it_o not_o in_o the_o power_n have_v the_o branch_n and_o effect_n take_v away_o for_o the_o present_a in_o the_o outward_a expression_n of_o it_o but_o transform_v into_o another_o shape_n and_o that_o be_v more_o inward_a make_v of_o he_o more_o spiritual_o proud_a and_o so_o have_v high_a conceit_n of_o the_o happiness_n of_o his_o condition_n and_o so_o rest_v second_o it_o reason_n thus_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a 1_o pet._n 5._o 5._o now_o in_o his_o highness_n of_o carriage_n or_o turbulence_n of_o spirit_n he_o look_v upon_o his_o change_v and_o abide_v not_o one_o and_o the_o same_o for_o ever_o now_o all_o this_o a_o man_n may_v have_v and_o yet_o have_v nothing_o manifest_v in_o truth_n and_o though_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o these_o be_v true_a in_o there_o place_n yet_o not_o appoint_v for_o rest_n but_o for_o effect_n of_o that_o which_o be_v in_o truth_n within_o for_o he_o that_o say_v he_o dwell_v in_o he_o not_o so_o safe_a for_o with_o every_o blast_n &_o storm_n that_o come_v against_o such_o a_o spirit_n it_o fall_v into_o its_o former_a state_n it_o be_v in_o before_o thus_o build_v so_o be_v the_o devout_a woman_n and_o golden_a sepulcher_n and_o white_v wall_n build_v upon_o such_o consideration_n as_o these_o they_o be_v outward_o holy_a and_o seem_o pure_a but_o be_v within_o full_a of_o deadly_a poison_n and_o be_v put_v for_o outward_a glory_n not_o adorn_v with_o the_o spirit_n so_o it_o be_v very_o likely_a that_o the_o say_a spirit_n that_o rest_v upon_o this_o seem_n though_o think_v by_o himself_o true_a holiness_n be_v a_o soul_n altogether_o full_a of_o deadly_a poison_n and_o deceit_n which_o in_o time_n may_v be_v discover_v and_o then_o the_o creature_n shall_v see_v but_o now_o i_o enjoy_v much_o peace_n in_o my_o condition_n when_o indeed_o he_o may_v have_v stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o conscience_n &_o his_o peace_n come_v in_o from_o a_o false_a ground_n not_o speak_v from_o god_n but_o draw_v forth_o or_o imagine_v in_o his_o particular_a practice_n many_o a_o soul_n feed_v upon_o a_o imaginary_a peace_n when_o it_o be_v ignorant_a of_o peace_n true_o manifest_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o in_o this_o most_o common_o do_v the_o affection_n blind_a and_o bribe_v the_o judgement_n and_o so_o peace_n remain_v only_o in_o the_o imagination_n and_o not_o enjoy_v by_o any_o powerful_a manifestation_n but_o if_o man_n heart_n in_o church_n relation_n may_v so_o utter_o be_v deceive_v than_o it_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o these_o ensue_a caution_n 1._o they_o have_v run_v unto_o minister_n to_o see_v what_o they_o will_v say_v some_o of_o they_o put_v they_o upon_o do_v some_o of_o they_o apply_v cure_n to_o they_o and_o here_o a_o poor_a heart_n think_v to_o be_v satisfy_v where_o he_o never_o rest_v but_o run_v from_o one_o to_o another_o from_o creature_n to_o creature_n see_v if_o he_o can_v get_v any_o thing_n from_o they_o sometime_o come_v away_o with_o much_o peace_n other_o time_n come_v away_o with_o a_o lesson_n of_o do_v and_o by_o these_o mean_n come_v soul_n sometime_o to_o have_v their_o deliverance_n and_o for_o a_o space_n rest_v until_o it_o break_v forth_o again_o the_o three_o way_n wherein_o many_o other_o attain_v deliverance_n be_v from_o god_n as_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n from_o their_o land_n of_o bondage_n tyranny_n and_o taskmaster_n which_o though_o god_n himself_o do_v free_v they_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v not_o to_o be_v their_o rest_n but_o to_o be_v their_o first_o step_n towards_o their_o rest_n so_o though_o god_n do_v sweet_o deliver_v a_o soul_n from_o and_o out_o of_o this_o trouble_n and_o perplexity_n of_o spirit_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v a_o rest_n unto_o he_o dispensation_n of_o god_n can_v infallible_o be_v discern_v second_o a_o soul_n may_v be_v deliver_v from_o a_o resolve_a self_n murder_n or_o destruction_n when_o temptation_n do_v violent_o attend_v that_o way_n yet_o not_o withstand_v though_o he_o be_v abundant_o preserve_v by_o god_n in_o his_o inward_a straight_a wherein_o satan_n will_v have_v he_o become_v his_o own_o executioner_n yet_o
