do_v go_v alongst_o with_o it_o as_o conviction_n of_o sin_n repentance_n historical_a faith_n desire_v of_o peace_n and_o union_n with_o god_n etc._n etc._n something_o to_o wit_n faith_n do_v actual_o close_a therewith_o some_o thing_n follow_v thereon_o as_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v by_o one_o in_o covenant_n as_o the_o duty_n of_o holiness_n and_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o etc._n etc._n now_o to_o come_v to_o our_o assertion_n the_o first_o of_o they_o be_v this_o if_o we_o take_v a_o condition_n large_o repentance_n may_v be_v call_v a_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n as_o sensible_a poverty_n may_v be_v call_v a_o condition_n upon_o which_o alm_n be_v give_v or_o as_o the_o forsake_v of_o the_o father_n house_n and_o cleave_v to_o the_o husband_n may_v we_o take_v a_o condition_n strict_o and_o proper_o repentance_n can_v be_v call_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n but_o faith_n only_o in_o that_o proper_a strict_a sense_n because_o 1._o in_o the_o opposition_n of_o the_o two_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o grace_n faith_n be_v put_v in_o opposition_n to_o work_n and_o repentance_n be_v not_o so_o formal_o oppose_v rom._n 10._o vers_fw-la 5_o 6_o etc._n etc._n and_o faith_n in_o that_o place_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v proper_o as_o distinguish_v from_o other_o grace_n of_o repentance_n love_n etc._n etc._n because_o it_o be_v that_o faith_n which_o do_v peculiar_o justify_v in_o opposition_n to_o work_n and_o as_o contradistinguish_v from_o they_o 2._o because_o that_o which_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o do_v succeed_v to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n must_v be_v something_o lay_v hold_n on_o a_o external_a object_n without_o a_o man_n to_o wit_n christ_n righteousness_n for_o the_o perform_n of_o the_o condition_n must_v be_v the_o ground_n of_o our_o expect_v the_o thing_n promise_v which_o only_a christ_n righteousness_n lay_v hold_v on_o place_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n therefore_o repentance_n can_v be_v proper_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n nor_o yet_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v mere_o inherent_a in_o we_o and_o do_v not_o so_o act_v upon_o christ_n whereof_o more_o be_v say_v former_o if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o faith_n be_v a_o inherent_a grace_n no_o less_o than_o repentance_n the_o answer_n be_v easy_a to_o wit_n that_o faith_n be_v not_o consider_v mere_o as_o a_o inherent_a grace_n when_o it_o be_v call_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o the_o will_n yet_o as_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o the_o will_n it_o be_v not_o consider_v as_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o marriage-knot_n but_o as_o it_o relate_v to_o a_o propose_a match_n and_o be_v the_o accept_n thereof_o and_o hence_o though_o love_n respect_v to_o the_o party_n and_o other_o thing_n be_v necessary_a to_o marriage_n and_o in_o a_o large_a sense_n may_v be_v call_v condition_n thereof_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o proper_o the_o condition_n which_o constitute_v a_o person_n marry_v to_o another_o because_o they_o act_n not_o so_o as_o to_o receive_v and_o close_v with_o the_o propose_a offer_n 3._o repentance_n be_v not_o that_o which_o formal_o constitute_v one_o a_o covenanter_n because_o one_o be_v not_o a_o covenanter_n as_o he_o be_v a_o penitent_a but_o as_o he_o be_v a_o believer_n for_o the_o immediate_a satisfy_a ground_n of_o one_o claim_n to_o the_o covenant_n be_v because_o by_o faith_n he_o have_v receive_v the_o offer_n and_o therefore_o as_o such_o he_o have_v right_a to_o the_o covenant_n it_o will_v not_o so_o follow_v from_o repentance_n to_o wit_n upon_o this_o formal_a consideration_n he_o exercise_v repentance_n therefore_o upon_o that_o formal_a consideration_n he_o be_v a_o covenanter_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v a_o evidence_n of_o the_o former_a because_o a_o penitent_a be_v a_o covenanter_n but_o his_o be_v a_o penitent_a be_v not_o the_o ratio_fw-la formalis_fw-la of_o his_o be_v a_o covenanter_n only_o it_o suppon_v he_o to_o have_v by_o faith_n close_v with_o the_o covenant_n for_o we_o may_v consider_v repent_v as_o abstract_v from_o formal_a close_n and_o covenant_v although_o we_o can_v separate_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o but_o we_o can_v consider_v believe_v as_o act_v on_o its_o object_n but_o we_o must_v consider_v it_o as_o close_v with_o the_o covenant_n therefore_o repentance_n can_v proper_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n as_o faith_n be_v 4._o that_o which_o be_v proper_o the_o condition_n do_v of_o itself_o upon_o its_o fulfil_n give_v one_o a_o title_n to_o the_o thing_n promise_v and_o do_v become_v the_o ground_n of_o a_o right_a unto_o they_o it_o be_v so_o upon_o supposition_n of_o fulfil_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o it_o be_v so_o in_o all_o covenant_n but_o repentance_n can_v do_v so_o therefore_o etc._n etc._n if_o it_o be_v say_v although_o repentance_n can_v so_o do_v it_o alone_o yet_o faith_n and_o it_o may_v do_v so_o together_o and_o see_v by_o this_o opinion_n faith_n be_v admit_v with_o repentance_n joint_o to_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o argument_n can_v hold_v because_o it_o be_v not_o say_v that_o repentance_n be_v the_o only_a condition_n answ._n the_o argument_n do_v shut_v out_o repentance_n from_o be_v account_v any_o part_n of_o the_o proper_a condition_n thus_o if_o repentance_n can_v joint_o with_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v put_v in_o as_o a_o piece_n of_o our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n throne_n than_o it_o can_v be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o proper_a condition_n because_o the_o perform_n of_o the_o proper_a condition_n have_v a_o ground_n in_o all_o covenant_n to_o plead_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o what_o be_v promise_v and_o the_o absolve_a of_o the_o party_n fulfil_v the_o same_o upon_o that_o account_n but_o the_o former_a can_v be_v say_v of_o repentance_n for_o our_o repentance_n can_v no_o way_n be_v allege_v before_o god_n justice_n as_o our_o righteousness_n ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n this_o may_v be_v make_v out_o thus_o if_o repentance_n may_v be_v table_v as_o any_o part_n of_o our_o righteousness_n than_o it_o must_v be_v either_o as_o a_o grace_n inherent_a in_o we_o or_o as_o it_o act_v on_o christ_n righteousness_n without_o we_o but_o neither_o can_v be_v say_v not_o the_o first_o because_o no_o inherent_a grace_n be_v to_o be_v admit_v in_o that_o respect_n in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n not_o the_o second_o because_o repentance_n have_v no_o such_o faculty_n of_o act_v on_o christ_n righteousness_n as_o have_v be_v say_v and_o therefore_o can_v be_v say_v to_o concur_v so_o at_o all_o 5._o if_o receive_v of_o christ_n offer_n be_v the_o formal_a and_o proper_a condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n alone_o then_o repentance_n can_v be_v any_o part_n of_o the_o proper_a condition_n thereof_o because_o it_o be_v not_o by_o repentance_n but_o by_o faith_n that_o we_o do_v receive_v he_o but_o the_o former_a be_v true_a receive_v and_o close_v with_o christ_n by_o faith_n be_v the_o only_a proper_a condition_n thereof_o therefore_o etc._n etc._n beside_o what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o former_a discourse_n this_o appear_v thus_o if_o receive_v of_o christ_n by_o faith_n do_v only_o formal_o entitle_v one_o to_o the_o covenant_n and_o all_o the_o promise_n thereof_o as_o such_o then_o it_o must_v be_v formal_o the_o proper_a condition_n because_o that_o entitle_v to_o the_o thing_n promise_v be_v the_o great_a character_n of_o a_o proper_a condition_n but_o faith_n only_o be_v such_o and_o therefore_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o
to_o say_v that_o all_o be_v not_o redeem_v etc._n etc._n because_o it_o leave_v this_o stumbling-block_n before_o the_o person_n that_o he_o know_v not_o whether_o he_o ought_v to_o believe_v or_o not_o because_o he_o know_v not_o whether_o he_o be_v redeem_v or_o not_o and_o this_o thought_n may_v also_o follow_v he_o if_o he_o be_v not_o redeem_v can_v his_o believe_a be_v useful_a to_o he_o answ._n there_o be_v several_a mistake_n in_o this_o objection_n therefore_o we_o shall_v answer_v several_a way_n thereunto_o and_o first_o we_o say_v that_o even_o upon_o supposition_n that_o one_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o christ_n this_o doctrine_n assert_v be_v more_o comfortable_a than_o the_o other_o because_o first_o he_o have_v no_o less_o warrant_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o rest_n on_o he_o than_o if_o the_o other_o doctrine_n be_v suppose_v for_o it_o be_v not_o christ_n die_v for_o any_o that_o warrant_v he_o to_o believe_v or_o be_v the_o object_n of_o his_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v god_n call_v require_v faith_n of_o he_o and_o god_n offer_v and_o promise_n knit_v life_n to_o the_o performance_n of_o that_o condition_n of_o believe_v called-for_a these_o be_v contain_v in_o god_n reveal_v will_n which_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o our_o practice_n and_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o according_a to_o this_o doctrine_n a_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v these_o ground_n for_o his_o warrant_n and_o there_o can_v no_o other_o be_v give_v even_o upon_o the_o contrary_a supposition_n second_o if_o he_o be_v bring_v to_o yield_v to_o his_o call_n to_o receive_v his_o offer_n and_o to_o trust_v himself_o to_o his_o promise_n he_o have_v then_o more_o solid_a ground_n of_o consolation_n because_o of_o the_o certain_a connexion_n that_o be_v betwixt_o faith_n and_o salvation_n than_o he_o can_v have_v by_o the_o other_o doctrine_n which_o by_o the_o interwoven_a error_n concern_v freewill_a the_o fall_v away_o of_o such_o as_o sometime_o have_v be_v true_a believer_n etc._n etc._n be_v whole_o brangle_v and_o so_o suppose_v he_o not_o yet_o to_o have_v close_v with_o christ_n he_o have_v the_o more_o effectual_a motive_n to_o engage_v he_o thereunto_o because_o by_o so_o do_v all_o be_v make_v sure_o 2._o we_o answer_v this_o doctrine_n of_o particular_a redemption_n to_o call_v it_o so_o do_v never_o make_v salvation_n impossible_a to_o any_o that_o will_v receive_v christ_n and_o rest_n on_o he_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a though_o it_o deny_v that_o all_o man_n be_v redeem_v or_o shall_v be_v save_v yet_o do_v it_o assert_v this_o universal_a that_o all_o whosoever_o shall_v believe_v be_v redeem_v and_o shall_v be_v save_v which_o certain_o do_v make_v the_o expectation_n of_o life_n through_o faith_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v the_o more_o certain_a and_o do_v lay_v the_o more_o solid_a ground_n for_o a_o toss_a sinner_n to_o cast_v himself_o upon_o when_o it_o say_v there_o be_v never_o a_o sinner_n of_o any_o rank_n or_o quality_n that_o do_v believe_v or_o shall_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n but_o he_o shall_v be_v save_v from_o which_o he_o may_v conclude_v then_o if_o i_o can_v or_o shall_v believe_v in_o christ_n i_o also_o shall_v be_v save_v which_o conclusion_n will_v not_o follow_v from_o the_o other_o doctrine_n and_o see_v this_o be_v the_o very_a express_a letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n whosoever_o believe_v shall_v be_v save_v there_o be_v no_o ground_n leave_v to_o question_v the_o same_o without_o manifest_a reflect_v upon_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o god_n 3._o we_o answer_v if_o any_o thing_n follow_v from_o this_o ground_n all_o be_v not_o redeem_v it_o be_v this_o therefore_o all_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v or_o therefore_o all_o will_v not_o believe_v both_o which_o be_v true_a and_o it_o do_v only_o make_v salvation_n impossible_a to_o he_o who_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o christ_n for_o to_o such_o it_o say_v if_o thou_o believe_v not_o thou_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v neither_o in_o such_o a_o case_n have_v thou_o ground_n to_o think_v thyself_o redeem_v and_o what_o absurdity_n be_v in_o these_o yea_o upon_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o other_o doctrine_n there_o be_v none_o without_o faith_n that_o can_v promise_v themselves_o life_n or_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o their_o pretend_a universal_a redemption_n more_o than_o upon_o the_o ground_n which_o we_o have_v lay_v down_o therefore_o it_o can_v never_o be_v say_v that_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v useless_a according_a to_o this_o doctrine_n yea_o it_o be_v assert_v to_o be_v always_o useful_a and_o profitable_a whereas_o by_o the_o opposite_a ground_n it_o may_v be_v often_o without_o these_o comfortable_a effect_n follow_v thereupon_o in_o the_o four_o place_n we_o answer_v that_o this_o objection_n as_o much_o more_o in_o this_o controversy_n do_v flow_v from_o a_o mistake_n of_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o justify_v faith_n for_o it_o suppon_v it_o to_o be_v the_o heart_n receive_v of_o and_o close_v with_o this_o as_o a_o truth_n that_o christ_n have_v die_v for_o i_o in_o particular_a and_o that_o his_o death_n be_v particular_o intend_v for_o i_o this_o be_v the_o more_o dangerous_a because_o it_o have_v be_v entertain_v by_o many_o and_o have_v be_v the_o occasion_n of_o mistake_n even_o to_o some_o great_a man_n who_o have_v lay_v this_o for_o a_o ground_n as_o cameron_n do_v on_o this_o subject_n christus_fw-la mortuus_fw-la est_fw-la pro_fw-la te_fw-la si_fw-la tu_fw-la id_fw-la factum_fw-la credas_fw-la that_o be_v christ_n have_v die_v for_o thou_o if_o thou_o believe_v it_o so_o to_o be_v now_o according_a to_o that_o ground_n it_o be_v impossible_a but_o to_o miscarry_v both_o in_o reference_n to_o this_o doctrine_n the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n and_o several_a other_o most_o concerning-truth_n it_o be_v to_o be_v advert_v then_o that_o when_o we_o be_v call_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n we_o be_v not_o call_v instant_o to_o believe_v that_o christ_n have_v offer_v up_o himself_o as_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o we_o in_o particular_a but_o we_o be_v to_o conceive_v it_o in_o this_o order_n first_o we_o be_v call_v to_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n lay_v down_o therein_o to_o wit_n that_o there_o be_v no_o name_n under_o heaven_n by_o which_o a_o sinner_n can_v be_v save_v but_o by_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n and_o that_o yet_o all_o who_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v be_v justify_v and_o save_v etc._n etc._n thus_o we_o may_v apply_v that_o word_n heb._n 11.6_o he_o that_o come_v to_o god_n must_v first_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v etc._n etc._n for_o if_o this_o general_a truth_n be_v not_o acknowledge_v save_v faith_n want_v the_o discovery_n of_o a_o sufficient_a and_o fit_a object_n to_o rest_v itself_o upon_o second_o we_o be_v then_o call_v to_o receive_v this_o christ_n offer_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o by_o faith_n to_o promise_n of_o justification_n life_n or_o salvation_n or_o any_o benefit_n of_o christ_n redemption_n make_v to_o any_o person_n but_o to_o he_o that_o believe_v and_o to_o do_v otherways_o be_v as_o if_o a_o woman_n that_o be_v woo_v for_o marriage_n shall_v fancy_v herself_o to_o have_v title_n and_o right_a to_o all_o the_o privilege_n of_o such_o a_o man_n wife_n before_o the_o marriage_n be_v actual_o consummate_v or_o before_o she_o have_v give_v her_o formal_a consent_n thereunto_o and_o so_o according_a to_o these_o ground_n we_o see_v that_o all_o hearer_n be_v not_o simple_o and_o instant_o call_v to_o believe_v that_o christ_n do_v die_v for_o they_o but_o first_o to_o receive_v he_o as_o their_o saviour_n and_o then_o to_o draw_v such_o a_o conclusion_n which_o upon_o the_o performance_n of_o that_o condition_n can_v never_o fail_v from_o this_o also_o we_o may_v see_v the_o fallacy_n and_o weakness_n of_o that_o much_o toss_v vain_a objection_n to_o wit_n that_o which_o every_o one_o be_v oblige_v to_o believe_v that_o must_v be_v truth_n but_o every_o one_o be_v oblige_v to_o believe_v that_o christ_n do_v die_v for_o he_o in_o particular_a therefore_o that_o christ_n do_v die_v for_o every_o one_o in_o particular_a must_v be_v a_o truth_n this_o argument_n i_o say_v depend_v only_o upon_o the_o former_a mistake_n of_o faith_n and_o this_o be_v deny_v that_o all_o man_n be_v instant_o call_v to_o believe_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o they_o in_o particular_a when_o they_o be_v call_v to_o believe_v in_o he_o for_o obtain_v of_o life_n the_o strength_n of_o it_o will_v evanish_v because_o suppose_v that_o many_o in_o the_o visible_a church_n which_o experience_n do_v put_v out_o of_o question_n do_v never_o believe_v in_o christ_n or_o by_o faith_n rest_n on_o he_o for_o the_o obtain_n of_o life_n then_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o many_o even_o in_o the_o visible_a church_n be_v never_o oblige_v to_o believe_v that_o christ_n have_v die_v for_o they_o in_o particular_a because_o none_o have_v warrant_n to_o make_v that_o application_n but_o such_o as_o have_v first_o betake_v themselves_o by_o faith_n unto_o christ_n whereby_o the_o assumption_n of_o that_o argument_n be_v palpable_o false_a for_o it_o must_v be_v so_o assume_v every_o man_n that_o hear_v the_o gospel_n and_o have_v receive_v christ_n aught_o to_o believe_v that_o he_o have_v die_v for_o he_o and_o so_o the_o conclusion_n will_v be_v that_o christ_n have_v die_v for_o all_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o which_o be_v true_a or_o it_o must_v be_v
