talent_n be_v not_o mean_v natural_a ability_n 1_o to_o understand_v the_o talent_n of_o natural_a ability_n take_v away_o all_o pertinency_n and_o aptness_n either_o to_o the_o person_n speak_v to_o or_o the_o occasion_n of_o speak_v from_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n which_o yet_o we_o be_v upon_o very_o necessary_a principle_n to_o grant_v to_o they_o the_o person_n to_o who_o these_o word_n be_v speak_v be_v jew_n who_o have_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n preach_v to_o they_o and_o the_o occasion_n of_o speak_v these_o word_n be_v immediate_o upon_o the_o preach_v that_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a the_o seed_n be_v the_o word_n it_o fall_v on_o all_o ground_n good_a and_o bad_a the_o stony_a thorny_a highway_n ground_n but_o these_o mystery_n our_o saviour_n speak_v in_o parable_n the_o reason_n be_v ask_v he_o return_v this_o answer_n in_o both_o place_n to_o he_o that_o have_v shall_v be_v give_v but_o from_o he_o that_o have_v not_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o talent_n well_o now_o if_o by_o talent_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v natural_a ability_n than_o the_o unbelieve_a jew_n do_v not_o use_v their_o natural_a ability_n well_o and_o yet_o they_o have_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o god_n do_v not_o fail_v to_o reveal_v his_o son_n christ_n to_o they_o else_o how_o can_v they_o be_v unbelieving_a and_o if_o he_o reveal_v his_o son_n to_o such_o as_o do_v not_o use_v their_o natural_a ability_n regular_o where_o be_v mr._n goodwin_n stand_v course_n of_o providence_n of_o reveal_v or_o hide_v his_o son_n christ_n according_a to_o man_n exercise_v or_o not_o exercise_v their_o natural_a ability_n regular_o 3_o their_o talent_n that_o be_v give_v be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d his_o own_o good_n that_o be_v the_o proper_a good_n and_o that_o of_o he_o we_o receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n but_o where_o shall_v we_o find_v that_o his_o church_n receive_v from_o he_o the_o ability_n of_o nature_n and_o that_o from_o he_o as_o mediator_n now_o he_o must_v prove_v this_o before_o it_o can_v be_v clear_a that_o these_o talent_n signify_v natural_a ability_n 4_o those_o talent_n that_o be_v give_v be_v in_o a_o various_a degree_n to_o diverse_a man_n some_o five_o some_o two_o some_o one_o talon_n but_o how_o can_v mr._n goodwin_n make_v his_o to_o agree_v with_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n if_o he_o consider_v his_o own_o word_n 10._o pag._n 10._o pag._n 10._o that_o all_o man_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n may_v make_v out_o the_o conclusion_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o that_o a_o atonement_n be_v make_v for_o sin_n if_o all_o man_n can_v do_v thus_o much_o and_o no_o man_n any_o more_o where_o be_v this_o variety_n that_o the_o parable_n speak_v of_o 5_o these_o talent_n
no_o not_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o that_o text_n to_o he_o that_o have_v shall_v be_v give_v but_o fourthly_a and_o last_o suppose_v we_o grant_v he_o all_o these_o three_o that_o man_n can_v improve_v natural_n regular_o and_o so_o please_v god_n and_o so_o procure_v increase_n of_o grace_n according_a to_o that_o stand_a course_n of_o providene_a yet_o will_v it_o not_o so_o roundly_o follow_v as_o mr._n goodwin_n pretend_v that_o all_o man_n even_o the_o heathen_a be_v in_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n to_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n &_o that_o upon_o the_o ground_n beforementioned_a sufficiency_n to_o believe_v require_v all_o requisite_n to_o the_o act_n of_o believe_v now_o believe_v the_o revelation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v a_o requisite_a which_o revelation_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o make_v but_o upon_o the_o actual_a and_o regular_a improvement_n according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o mr._n goodwin_n therefore_o we_o must_v not_o insist_v upon_o supposition_n if_o man_n improve_v natural_n well_o god_n will_v reveal_v christ_n and_o so_o raise_v a_o chymericall_a sufficiency_n of_o believe_v for_o there_o be_v no_o sufficiency_n of_o believe_v in_o christ_n till_o he_o be_v reveal_v who_o he_o will_v reveal_v say_v mr._n goodwin_n not_o upon_o the_o capacity_n of_o improvement_n but_o upon_o the_o actual_a improvement_n according_a to_o the_o rule_n and_o that_o stand_a course_n of_o providence_n so_o much_o urge_v by_o mr._n goodwin_n imply_v no_o more_o than_o a_o not_o fail_v to_o reveal_v christ_n upon_o the_o actual_a regular_a improvement_n of_o natural_a ability_n they_o will_v not_o say_v that_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o reveal_v christ_n to_o those_o that_o be_v able_a only_o to_o improve_v nature_n except_o they_o do_v actual_o improve_v it_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o the_o revelation_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o actual_a improvement_n of_o natural_a ability_n lead_v thereunto_o be_v requisite_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o if_o both_o be_v not_o actual_o present_a there_o be_v no_o sufficiency_n for_o believe_v otherwise_o why_o shall_v the_o remonstrant_n trouble_v themselves_o in_o frame_v out_o a_o various_a measure_n and_o degree_n of_o sufficiency_n and_o grant_v that_o till_o man_n do_v use_v natural_n well_o and_o so_o have_v christ_n actual_o reveal_v 11._o corvin_n in_o molin_n c._n 37._o §._o 11._o there_o be_v no_o sufficiency_n of_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o to_o come_v to_o some_o close_a in_o this_o point_n christ_n reveal_v and_o so_o believe_v and_o that_o it_o be_v also_o true_a that_o if_o he_o do_v all_o those_o thing_n beforementioned_a he_o shall_v have_v christ_n reveal_v in_o all_o this_o the_o question_n be_v not_o of_o a_o sufficiency_n ad_fw-la posse_fw-la credendum_fw-la but_o a_o sufficiency_n ad_fw-la actu_fw-la credendum_fw-la now_o to_o this_o the_o actual_a revelation_n of_o thus_o to_o argue_v if_o no_o man_n do_v actual_o improve_v natural_n regular_o than_o all_o man_n have_v not_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n for_o believe_v on_o christ_n but_o the_o former_a be_v true_a therefore_o the_o latter_a the_o minor_a be_v prove_v by_o rom._n 3._o 3._o rom._n 3._o so_o that_o except_o mr._n goodwin_n can_v prove_v that_o all_o man_n do_v actual_o improve_v natural_a ability_n and_o so_o do_v that_o upon_o which_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v requisite_a to_o the_o believe_v on_o christ_n be_v grant_v he_o have_v not_o yet_o no_o nor_o ever_o can_v prove_v that_o all_o man_n have_v a_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n if_o he_o will_v but_o adhere_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o own_o pretend_a course_n of_o providence_n and_o now_o to_o close_v up_o all_o until_o mr._n goodwin_n can_v prove_v that_o every_o man_n can_v improve_v natural_a ability_n well_o or_o can_v please_v god_n well_o by_o so_o do_v and_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o stand_a course_n of_o providence_n as_o he_o pretend_v and_o that_o upon_o the_o grant_n of_o all_o these_o all_o man_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n for_o believe_v argument_n sake_n that_o the_o heathen_a want_v the_o letter_n and_o external_a administration_n of_o the_o gospel_n by_o man_n and_o also_o be_v in_o no_o capacity_n of_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o either_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n or_o providence_n nor_o yet_o by_o any_o improvement_n of_o natural_a ability_n yet_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v acknowledge_v that_o they_o be_v in_o such_o a_o capacity_n of_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o they_o even_o of_o the_o oral_a administration_n thereof_o in_o such_o a_o sense_n as_o all_o nation_n be_v in_o a_o capacity_n of_o have_v and_o enjoy_v such_o merchandise_n and_o commodity_n as_o be_v exportable_a out_o of_o any_o nation_n under_o heaven_n and_o may_v be_v have_v by_o equitable_a address_n to_o they_o partur_fw-la montes_fw-la but_o they_o bring_v forth_o a_o very_a ridiculous_a birth_n i_o hope_v mr._n goodwin_n intend_v not_o his_o treatise_n to_o be_v like_o those_o fly_a lie_a phamphlet_n remote_a capacity_n that_o be_v his_o last_o refuge_n it_o be_v
the_o regulate_v of_o our_o life_n which_o he_o can_v no_o way_n prove_v god_n do_v by_o the_o gospel_n in_o any_o proportionable_a discovery_n but_o he_o undertake_v to_o prove_v by_o a_o twofold_a argument_n that_o nature_n bind_v all_o man_n to_o believe_v on_o christ_n if_o reduce_v to_o form_n it_o will_v run_v thus_o if_o nature_n bind_v we_o to_o use_v the_o best_a mean_n for_o our_o welfare_n and_o peace_n than_o it_o bind_v we_o to_o believe_v it_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o life_n but_o nature_n bind_v all_o man_n to_o use_v the_o best_a mean_v for_o their_o welfare_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n the_o argument_n be_v plausible_a enough_o if_o he_o have_v not_o himself_o lay_v the_o ground_n of_o its_o confutation_n the_o same_o notion_n will_v answer_v it_o that_o i_o give_v before_o nature_n teach_v no_o man_n to_o use_v any_o mean_n for_o his_o welfare_n but_o what_o he_o know_v to_o be_v in_o such_o a_o tendency_n but_o the_o question_n presuppose_v that_o
