repetition_n or_o drowsy_a and_o lumpish_a petition_n as_o if_o we_o care_v not_o whether_o we_o lose_v or_o find_v but_o we_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o cry_v fervent_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o then_o we_o up_o to_o make_v such_o request_n alone_o as_o it_o assure_v we_o shall_v be_v perform_v but_o by_o the_o way_n let_v we_o observe_v that_o sometime_o spiritual_a man_n may_v make_v carnal_a prayer_n as_o job_n and_o elijah_n and_o jonah_n do_v when_o they_o desire_v that_o god_n will_v take_v away_o their_o life_n which_o proceed_v from_o the_o pride_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o from_o the_o rebelliousnesse_n of_o their_o will_n in_o that_o they_o can_v not_o content_v themselves_o to_o live_v in_o that_o estate_n whereunto_o the_o lord_n have_v bring_v they_o such_o fleshly_a petition_n may_v we_o sometime_o put_v up_o before_o the_o lord_n but_o we_o shall_v have_v check_n and_o rebuke_n in_o our_o heart_n for_o the_o same_o and_o no_o assurance_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v grant_v but_o when_o our_o suit_n be_v spiritual_a the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o move_v we_o to_o ask_v will_v also_o persuade_v we_o that_o god_n be_v able_a and_o willing_a to_o hear_v we_o and_o to_o relieve_v we_o and_o that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v obtain_v a_o blessing_n soon_o or_o late_a let_v we_o therefore_o labour_v to_o ask_v in_o faith_n as_o the_o apostle_n james_n exhore_v and_o not_o waver_v 1.3_o james_n 1.3_o for_o he_o that_o waver_v and_o make_v question_n whether_o god_n will_v hear_v he_o or_o not_o be_v like_o a_o wave_n of_o the_o sea_n toss_v with_o the_o wind_n and_o carry_v away_o be_v never_o at_o quiet_a in_o himself_o but_o sometime_o imagine_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v help_v he_o he_o run_v unto_o he_o and_o then_o have_v a_o conceit_n that_o such_o and_o such_o man_n will_v do_v somewhat_o for_o he_o he_o leave_v prayer_n and_o betake_v himself_o unto_o they_o but_o find_v no_o relief_n there_o he_o will_v to_o prayer_n again_o and_o yet_o have_v not_o a_o present_a answer_n nor_o faith_n to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n he_o fall_v to_o shift_v for_o himself_o by_o use_v of_o ill_a mean_n and_o so_o be_v altogether_o unstable_a and_o unsettle_a even_o as_o the_o wave_n of_o the_o sea_n that_o be_v never_o at_o rest_n every_o vain_a cogitation_n &_o every_o slight_a tentation_n toss_v and_o turmoyl_a and_o disquiet_v his_o hart_n thus_o it_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v neither_o will_v it_o be_v thus_o with_o those_o that_o ask_v in_o faith_n for_o they_o know_v that_o they_o shall_v obtain_v and_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v unto_o they_o according_a to_o their_o faith_n that_o either_o they_o shall_v have_v the_o particular_a thing_n that_o they_o ask_v or_o a_o better_a in_o stead_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o they_o pray_v still_o and_o wait_v god_n leisure_n and_o herein_o they_o much_o honour_v the_o lord_n in_o that_o they_o cast_v themselves_o upon_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o promise_n and_o do_v not_o trouble_v their_o heart_n with_o unnecessary_a fear_n and_o care_n about_o the_o success_n which_o be_v god_n work_n and_o not_o they_o man_n will_v be_v glad_a to_o be_v rid_v of_o importunate_a suitor_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v still_o hang_v upon_o they_o especial_o if_o their_o suit_n be_v weighty_a and_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o crave_v of_o some_o importance_n but_o the_o lord_n will_v in_o no_o case_n have_v man_n to_o let_v their_o suit_n fall_v nay_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o such_o as_o will_v not_o have_v a_o repulse_n but_o still_o depend_v upon_o he_o and_o daily_o renew_v their_o petition_n for_o they_o show_v evident_o that_o they_o have_v a_o lively_a and_o strong_a faith_n they_o will_v not_o presume_v to_o ask_v unless_o they_o have_v a_o warrant_n and_o have_v a_o warrant_n they_o dare_v not_o make_v question_n of_o obtain_v for_o that_o be_v to_o make_v doubt_n of_o god_n truth_n and_o fidelity_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o it_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n viz._n to_o have_v a_o good_a ground_n for_o that_o which_o we_o ask_v a_o good_a end_n and_o a_o good_a affection_n in_o ask_v and_o faith_n to_o believe_v that_o we_o shall_v obtain_v whatsoever_o we_o ask_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n a_o three_o use_n of_o this_o point_n use_v 3_o be_v for_o a_o singular_a consolation_n to_o such_o as_o can_v pray_v in_o that_o sort_n howsoever_o the_o devil_n will_v persuade_v they_o that_o they_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o but_o only_o such_o flashing_n as_o hypocrite_n sometime_o have_v yet_o hereby_o they_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o they_o indeed_o because_o they_o constant_o pour_v out_o strong_a cry_n and_o faithful_a supplication_n before_o the_o lord_n which_o no_o hypocrite_n can_v do_v 27.10_o job_n 27.10_o for_o as_o job_n speak_v he_o can_v set_v his_o delight_n on_o the_o almighty_a nor_o call_v upon_o god_n at_o all_o time_n for_o that_o be_v a_o special_a gift_n of_o god_n and_o peculiar_a unto_o the_o saint_n and_o as_o any_o one_o make_v more_o such_o holy_a prayer_n so_o may_v he_o be_v more_o confident_o persuade_v that_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n in_o a_o great_a measure_n an_o they_o shall_v look_v upon_o i_o who_o they_o have_v pierce_v that_o be_v upon_o christ_n and_o that_o by_o the_o eye_n
that_o we_o shall_v strive_v for_o this_o holy_a sorrow_n which_o will_v melt_v our_o heart_n and_o refine_v our_o soul_n neither_o let_v we_o content_v ourselves_o with_o every_o slender_a measure_n thereof_o but_o endeavour_n to_o bewail_v our_o sin_n with_o a_o bitter_a lamentation_n such_o as_o be_v mention_v in_o this_o text_n viz._n that_o we_o mourn_v as_o one_o will_v do_v for_o the_o death_n of_o his_o first_o bear_v and_o as_o the_o jew_n do_v for_o josiah_n when_o he_o be_v slay_v in_o the_o valley_n of_o megiddo_n but_o will_n some_o say_v if_o this_o be_v require_v of_o all_o true_a christian_n object_n who_o can_v say_v that_o he_o be_v such_o a_o one_o for_o few_o or_o none_o have_v attain_v to_o such_o deep_a and_o pierce_a grief_n indeed_o it_o be_v true_a for_o the_o most_o part_n answ_n yet_o not_o general_o for_o some_o have_v be_v as_o thorough_o wound_v with_o sorrow_n for_o their_o heinous_a transgression_n as_o any_o man_n have_v be_v for_o his_o child_n death_n or_o as_o they_o be_v for_o josiahs_n death_n and_o as_o for_o other_o that_o have_v not_o be_v altogether_o so_o deep_o plunge_v in_o grief_n and_o anguish_n they_o take_v up_o that_o in_o continuance_n which_o they_o want_v in_o present_a passion_n natural_a mourning_n be_v ordinary_o more_o violent_a as_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o david_n mourning_n for_o absalon_n who_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o bitterness_n of_o his_o heart_n so_o that_o the_o people_n may_v hear_v he_o but_o godly_a lamentation_n be_v more_o last_a and_o durable_a so_o that_o the_o one_o may_v be_v well_o compare_v to_o a_o land_n flood_n which_o make_v a_o great_a show_n and_o noise_n for_o the_o time_n but_o come_v a_o week_n after_o and_o there_o will_v be_v little_a appearance_n thereof_o and_o the_o other_o to_o wit_n godly_a sorrow_n may_v be_v liken_v to_o a_o still_a and_o constant_a rain_n which_o enter_v more_o deep_o into_o the_o ground_n and_o remain_v long_o and_o do_v more_o good_a a_o great_a deal_n than_o a_o sudden_a violent_a and_o tempestuous_a shower_n and_o herein_o let_v these_o be_v judge_n who_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o let_v they_o speak_v who_o have_v have_v the_o great_a cross_n and_o have_v be_v even_o drunken_a with_o wormwood_n as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v let_v they_o i_o say_v speak_v and_o testify_v for_o the_o clear_n of_o this_o point_n whether_o many_o of_o their_o great_a trouble_n be_v not_o in_o a_o sort_n forget_v in_o regard_n of_o any_o present_a grief_n that_o they_o conceive_v for_o they_o and_o whether_o the_o sin_n of_o their_o youth_n do_v not_o more_o constant_o vex_v and_o torment_v they_o than_o all_o the_o affliction_n of_o their_o youth_n do_v and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o may_v it_o well_o be_v conclude_v that_o their_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v great_a though_o it_o be_v notalwaies_o so_o boisterous_a and_o bitter_a for_o the_o present_a and_o therefore_o see_v it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o may_v be_v attain_v unto_o let_v we_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n and_o help_v whereby_o we_o may_v be_v further_v therein_o see_v the_o mean_n in_o that_o sermon_n on_o isa_n 1._o verse_n 12._o and_n the_o land_n shall_v bewail_v every_o family_n apart_o the_o family_n of_o the_o house_n of_o david_n apart_o and_o their_o wife_n we_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v governor_n of_o family_n take_v the_o way_n to_o have_v piety_n ground_v in_o their_o heart_n that_o be_v about_o we_o that_o so_o our_o house_n may_v be_v with_o crabtree_n or_o the_o like_a how_o much_o more_o careful_a shall_v we_o be_v of_o our_o house_n which_o be_v near_o and_o of_o better_a use_n than_o our_o orchard_n that_o it_o may_v be_v they_o have_v hear_v a_o sermon_n they_o suspect_v their_o own_o guiltiness_n and_o so_o search_v their_o heart_n and_o lament_v their_o corruption_n for_o search_v be_v dig_v and_o lament_v be_v cast_v forth_o of_o the_o rubbish_n and_o loose_a earth_n they_o think_v their_o labour_n even_o lose_v unless_o their_o heart_n can_v meet_v with_o such_o a_o promise_n with_o such_o a_o threaten_a or_o with_o such_o a_o instruction_n to_o make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o the_o same_o now_o on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o hypocrite_n make_v quick_a work_n all_o his_o building_n be_v above_o ground_n and_o therefore_o when_o he_o have_v talk_v a_o little_a of_o the_o sermon_n he_o be_v well_o and_o think_v all_o his_o work_n be_v dispatch_v he_o spend_v no_o time_n in_o dig_v and_o search_v nor_o in_o grieve_v and_o lament_v for_o his_o corruption_n nay_o he_o censure_v christian_n as_o too_o melancholy_a and_o pensive_a that_o will_v go_v aside_o into_o a_o corner_n and_o there_o deal_v by_o as_o in_o this_o place_n we_o may_v perceive_v how_o far_o true_a christian_n do_v both_o agree_v and_o differ_v so_o there_o be_v other_o scripture_n to_o clear_v the_o same_o as_o the_o eight_o of_o luke_n the_o parable_n of_o the_o ground_n wherein_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o stony_a ground_n do_v hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o with_o understanding_n yea_o with_o joy_n nay_o which_o be_v more_o the_o thorny_a ground_n do_v not_o only_o receive_v the_o seed_n but_o bring_v forth_o both_o the_o blade_n and_o the_o ear_n that_o be_v do_v not_o only_o with_o readiness_n receive_v the_o word_n but_o also_o do_v somewhat_o in_o their_o manner_n which_o the_o word_n command_v thus_o far_o the_o ill_a ground_n agree_v with_o the_o good_a ground_n but_o herein_o the_o good_a ground_n go_v beyond_o they_o that_o those_o that_o be_v signify_v thereby_o come_v with_o a_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n and_o have_v patience_n to_o undergo_v persecution_n for_o the_o truth_n and_o contempt_n of_o the_o world_n that_o they_o will_v not_o be_v choke_v with_o the_o care_n and_o pleasure_n thereof_o whereas_o the_o other_o sort_n if_o they_o see_v in_o likely_a hood_n that_o they_o may_v get_v more_o profit_n and_o ease_v by_o follow_v the_o world_n then_o by_o cmbrace_v christ_n they_o be_v go_v another_o place_n fit_a for_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o point_n 25._o matth._n 25._o we_o have_v in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o virgin_n where_o we_o may_v observe_v 1._o that_o they_o be_v all_o virgin_n that_o be_v such_o as_o do_v profess_v to_o separate_v themselves_o from_o worldly_a lust_n and_o do_v not_o go_v a_o whore_v after_o the_o common_a corruption_n of_o the_o time_n but_o keep_v themselves_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o outward_a sobriety_n and_o do_v diverse_a work_n that_o be_v glorious_a in_o the_o view_n of_o the_o world_n 4._o they_o all_o go_v to_o meet_v the_o bridegroom_n that_o be_v all_o of_o they_o frequent_v the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n as_o if_o they_o expect_v favour_n and_o fellowship_n with_o christ_n jesus_n 5._o last_o it_o be_v say_v they_o all_o slumber_v and_o sleep_v that_o be_v those_o that_o be_v true_a christian_n have_v sound_a fruit_n of_o piety_n and_o sincerity_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o in_o their_o life_n know_v their_o estate_n be_v good_a and_o therefore_o wait_v for_o their_o saviour_n with_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a heart_n hypocrite_n also_o see_v that_o they_o go_v beyond_o atheist_n and_o profane_a person_n think_v their_o case_n be_v good_a and_o thereupon_o they_o grow_v secure_a and_o never_o trouble_v themselves_o about_o the_o assurance_n of_o their_o election_n thus_o far_o the_o wise_a and_o foolish_a virgin_n accord_n but_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n that_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n have_v no_o more_o oil_n than_o they_o carry_v in_o their_o lamp_n the_o world_n may_v easy_o see_v all_o that_o be_v in_o they_o but_o the_o wise_a virgin_n have_v a_o lamp_n to_o carry_v oil_n and_o a_o heart_n to_o carry_v oil_n they_o have_v two_o vessel_n one_o for_o practice_v and_o another_o for_o store_n that_o though_o the_o oil_n in_o the_o lamp_n shall_v be_v spend_v yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o new_a supply_n make_v thus_o we_o see_v in_o how_o many_o thing_n false-hearted_a dissembler_n come_v near_o the_o sincere_a of_o god_n servant_n which_o serve_v use_v 1_o first_o for_o the_o reproof_n
of_o they_o that_o because_o they_o live_v a_o civil_a life_n and_o partake_v of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o sacrament_n think_v they_o have_v go_v far_o enough_o and_o account_v themselves_o very_o good_a christian_n this_o be_v but_o to_o be_v a_o builder_n one_o of_o the_o ill_a ground_n one_o of_o the_o five_o foolish_a virgin_n and_o therefore_o as_o yet_o their_o case_n be_v woeful_a second_o if_o those_o that_o go_v so_o far_o be_v notwithstanding_o miserable_a then_o how_o curse_a be_v they_o that_o have_v not_o proceed_v so_o far_o that_o be_v not_o builder_n but_o destroyer_n of_o themselves_o and_o other_o by_o their_o corrupt_a speech_n and_o by_o their_o lewd_a example_n and_o course_n of_o life_n that_o be_v not_o arable_a ground_n but_o altogether_o a_o wild_a waste_n that_o be_v not_o virgin_n but_o do_v still_o commit_v spiritual_a whoredom_n and_o that_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o all_o the_o world_n against_o the_o lord_n god_n of_o heaven_n that_o be_v a_o jealous_a god_n if_o their_o fall_n shall_v be_v horrible_a and_o fearful_a that_o build_v and_o that_o with_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n because_o they_o build_v on_o a_o ill_a foundation_n how_o terrible_a must_v their_o judgement_n need_v be_v that_o come_v so_o far_o behind_o such_o in_o any_o show_n of_o goodness_n and_o go_v so_o far_o beyond_o they_o in_o every_o kind_n of_o gross_a wickedness_n if_o these_o ground_n that_o make_v show_v of_o fruitfulness_n be_v accurse_v because_o they_o bring_v not_o forth_o ripe_a fruit_n then_o what_o shall_v become_v of_o they_o that_o will_v not_o endure_v any_o plough_v at_o all_o but_o bring_v forth_o briar_n and_o bramble_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o poison_a weed_n and_o if_o it_o go_v so_o hard_o with_o those_o that_o be_v virgin_n and_o go_v with_o their_o lamp_n to_o meet_v the_o bridegroom_n then_o what_o must_v their_o doom_n be_v that_o be_v not_o virgin_n but_o adulterer_n and_o adulteress_n that_o love_v the_o earth_n more_o than_o heaven_n and_o earthly_a thing_n more_o than_o heavenly_a thing_n that_o will_v rather_o be_v at_o a_o table_n of_o good_a cheer_n where_o their_o body_n may_v be_v pamper_a then_o at_o the_o lord_n table_n where_o their_o soul_n may_v be_v feed_v unto_o eternal_a life_n certain_o these_o man_n judgement_n sleep_v not_o and_o when_o it_o overtake_v they_o woe_n unto_o they_o for_o their_o case_n will_v be_v most_o lamentable_a neither_o need_v they_o cry_v out_o against_o hypocrite_n for_o they_o be_v ten_o time_n worse_o than_o hypocrite_n and_o their_o punishment_n must_v be_v suitable_a thirdlie_o this_o be_v for_o instruction_n that_o since_o hypocrite_n seem_v to_o draw_v in_o the_o same_o yoke_n of_o sincerity_n with_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n therefore_o we_o shall_v search_v our_o heart_n and_o our_o thought_n and_o not_o only_o build_v above_o ground_n 17._o jer._n 17._o but_o look_v whether_o our_o foundation_n be_v good_a for_o the_o heart_n be_v deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n yet_o the_o word_n of_o god_n tri_v it_o that_o set_v it_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o rack_n and_o be_v as_o a_o two-edged_a sword_n that_o divide_v between_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o reins_n and_o find_v out_o all_o shift_n and_o excuse_n whatsoever_o but_o that_o we_o may_v more_o plain_o perceive_v the_o way_n how_o to_o get_v a_o sincere_a heart_n let_v we_o observe_v these_o direction_n follow_v the_o first_o shall_v be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o text_n namely_o heart_n how_o to_o get_v and_o trâ—e_v a_o upright_a heart_n that_o we_o must_v dig_v and_o search_v into_o our_o conscience_n and_o when_o we_o find_v any_o corruption_n therein_o we_o must_v cast_v it_o forth_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o say_v indeed_o i_o find_v a_o ill_a foundation_n but_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n i_o must_v build_v upon_o it_o nay_o a_o good_a builder_n will_v not_o do_v so_o but_o throw_v out_o every_o thing_n that_o may_v endanger_v his_o foundation_n and_o so_o shall_v we_o deal_v with_o sin_n and_o thereby_o may_v we_o try_v our_o plainness_n if_o we_o can_v sound_o judge_v ourselves_o and_o be_v glad_a to_o be_v admonish_v of_o other_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o there_o be_v uprightness_n in_o we_o as_o it_o be_v a_o evident_a token_n that_o he_o mind_v to_o have_v a_o good_a foundation_n that_o when_o his_o neighbour_n come_v with_o a_o spade_n and_o tell_v he_o i_o see_v you_o have_v much_o ado_n here_o and_o that_o you_o need_v help_v i_o will_v join_v with_o you_o be_v glad_a of_o this_o news_n and_o thankful_o accep_n of_o he_o and_o of_o his_o labour_n this_o be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisy_n practice_n who_o have_v little_a to_o say_v against_o the_o gift_n of_o john_n baptist_n and_o of_o christ_n but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o dig_v at_o their_o pride_n and_o covetousness_n and_o cruelty_n they_o can_v not_o endure_v it_o second_o another_o trial_n be_v at_o who_o sin_n we_o grieve_v most_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v the_o sore_a and_o busy_a digger_n of_o all_o but_o it_o be_v in_o other_o man_n ground_n but_o he_o that_o will_v have_v a_o good_a foundation_n unfaithful_a in_o god_n service_n what_o way_n may_v i_o take_v to_o get_v peace_n unto_o my_o soul_n this_o be_v the_o way_n indeed_o to_o get_v a_o sound_a heart_n and_o this_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n of_o a_o sound_a hart_n when_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o own_o soul_n do_v more_o vex_v we_o than_o all_o the_o injury_n that_o man_n have_v do_v or_o can_v do_v against_o we_o and_o therefore_o we_o be_v ever_o busy_a in_o search_v out_o the_o hide_a corruption_n that_o lie_v lurk_v within_o our_o soul_n that_o so_o our_o foundation_n may_v remain_v still_o unmoveable_a for_o this_o be_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o a_o earthly_a house_n and_o a_o spiritual_a that_o the_o one_o need_v but_o once_o to_o have_v a_o sure_a foundation_n lay_v but_o the_o other_o require_v daily_o look_v too_o there_o be_v some_o one_o corruption_n or_o other_o that_o must_v be_v cast_v forth_o so_o that_o christian_n be_v search_v and_o dig_v builder_n who_o albeit_o they_o seem_v to_o themselves_o to_o be_v very_o blind_a yet_o they_o get_v the_o great_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o though_o they_o be_v very_o dead_a in_o their_o own_o feel_n yet_o they_o carry_v away_o the_o
