good_a to_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o so_o he_o do_v turn_v good_a to_o evil_a to_o they_o that_o hate_v he_o for_o among_o thing_n create_v by_o god_n or_o devise_v by_o the_o creature_n there_o be_v nothing_o absolute_o good_a or_o absolute_o evil_a but_o every_o good_a may_v have_v some_o relation_n of_o evil_a and_o every_o evil_n may_v have_v some_o respect_n of_o good_a thus_o we_o see_v what_o evil_a be_v in_o general_a but_o more_o special_o we_o must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v furthermore_o the_o evil_a of_o evil_n which_o although_o it_o be_v general_o suggest_v in_o the_o former_a distinction_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a yet_o nevertheless_o here_o must_v more_o distinct_o be_v note_v wherefore_o we_o must_v observe_v also_o that_o there_o be_v four_o combination_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a which_o be_v these_o follow_v 1._o the_o good_a of_o good_a 2._o the_o evil_a of_o good_a 3._o the_o good_a of_o evil_n 4._o the_o evil_a of_o evil_n the_o good_a of_o good_a be_v that_o fruit_n or_o commodity_n which_o god_n child_n reap_v by_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n good_a the_o good_a of_o good_a as_o the_o benefit_n of_o health_n and_o wealth_n peace_n and_o liberty_n the_o word_n and_o all_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n whereby_o the_o godly_a man_n be_v not_o only_o comfort_v and_o refresh_v in_o his_o body_n but_o furthermore_o feed_v and_o nourish_v and_o strengthen_v in_o his_o soul_n to_o conversion_n and_o salvation_n the_o evil_a of_o good_a be_v that_o hurt_n and_o detriment_n which_o the_o wicked_a reap_v by_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n aforesaid_a good_a the_o evil_a of_o good_a as_o that_o not_o only_o their_o life_n health_n peace_n liberty_n wealth_n and_o prosperity_n in_o the_o world_n but_o also_o all_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n become_v the_o bane_n and_o poison_n both_o of_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o their_o everlasting_a damnation_n another_o day_n that_o although_o the_o wicked_a be_v nourish_v by_o their_o meat_n and_o cure_v by_o their_o physic_n and_o instruct_v and_o reproove_v by_o the_o word_n etc._n etc._n yet_o there_o be_v a_o secret_a poison_n therewithal_o infuse_v into_o their_o soul_n which_o shall_v another_o day_n in_o god_n appoint_a time_n burst_v out_o to_o their_o utter_a overthrow_n the_o good_a of_o evil_n be_v that_o good_a which_o the_o lord_n as_o a_o skilful_a physician_n gather_v from_o the_o affliction_n and_o sin_n of_o his_o child_n as_o it_o be_v a_o purgation_n out_o of_o poison_n evil_n the_o good_a of_o evil_n for_o god_n can_v and_o do_v expel_v one_o sin_n with_o another_o and_o many_o sin_n with_o affliction_n as_o a_o father_n correct_v and_o amend_v the_o fault_n of_o his_o child_n by_o correction_n the_o evil_a of_o evil_n be_v that_o damage_n which_o the_o wicked_a sustain_v by_o fall_v into_o sin_n evil_n the_o evil_a of_o evil_n and_o the_o punishment_n thereby_o deserve_v which_o be_v that_o thereby_o their_o damnation_n be_v increase_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o wrath_n be_v heap_v up_o by_o their_o sin_n and_o a_o great_a number_n of_o sin_n be_v commit_v by_o their_o affliction_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o evil_a be_v and_o by_o contrary_a what_o good_a be_v now_o follow_v the_o second_o thing_n evil_a how_o god_n deliver_v from_o evil_a which_o be_v how_o god_n deliver_v from_o evil_a which_o in_o part_n may_v be_v conceive_v by_o the_o former_a distinction_n yet_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o present_a purpose_n god_n deliver_v we_o from_o evil_a four_o way_n first_o by_o preserve_v we_o from_o commit_v of_o sin_n second_o by_o free_v we_o from_o judgement_n due_a to_o sin_n three_o by_o free_v we_o from_o the_o â—urt_n of_o sin_n and_o affliction_n four_o by_o turn_v all_o those_o sin_n which_o we_o commit_v and_o the_o affliction_n which_o we_o sustain_v to_o our_o good_a this_o may_v suffice_v for_o the_o second_o general_a point_n to_o be_v consider_v in_o this_o petition_n viz._n the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n now_o follow_v the_o three_o general_n which_o shall_v be_v the_o supplication_n but_o because_o the_o petition_n be_v propound_v negative_o and_o by_o way_n of_o deprecation_n as_o none_o of_o the_o rest_n be_v therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v convenient_a to_o alter_v the_o order_n former_o propound_v and_o to_o speak_v in_o the_o three_o place_n of_o the_o deprecation_n annex_v in_o the_o four_o place_n the_o supplication_n 12.7.8_o 3_o the_o deprecation_n of_o the_o last_o petition_n again_o to_o tentation_n 2._o cor._n 12.7.8_o the_o thing_n that_o we_o pray_v against_o be_v these_o follow_v 1_o temptation_n but_o not_o absolute_o against_o temptation_n but_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o draw_v we_o away_o from_o god_n to_o commit_v sin_n and_o so_o the_o apostle_n paul_n pray_v that_o the_o prick_n of_o the_o flesh_n may_v be_v remove_v from_o he_o which_o he_o term_v the_o angel_n of_o satan_n because_o that_o the_o devil_n send_v it_o for_o a_o devilish_a end_n howsoever_o god_n send_v it_o for_o his_o humiliation_n and_o humility_n by_o temptation_n in_o this_o place_n understand_v solicitation_n to_o sin_n affliction_n against_o affliction_n 2_o affliction_n but_o not_o absolute_o against_o it_o neither_o only_o so_o far_o forth_o be_v it_o lawful_a to_o pray_v against_o affliction_n as_o they_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n the_o curse_n of_o god_n mean_v to_o drive_v we_o to_o impatiency_n 30.9_o prou._n 30.9_o or_o to_o take_v god_n name_n in_o vain_a so_o agur_n pray_v against_o poverty_n which_o be_v one_o kind_n of_o affliction_n here_o before_o we_o proceed_v any_o further_a two_o question_n or_o doubt_n must_v be_v discuss_v and_o resolve_v and_o that_o joint_o each_o depend_v of_o other_o 1_o whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o pray_v for_o a_o temptation_n or_o a_o cross_n 2_o how_o far_o forth_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o pray_v for_o or_o against_o temptation_n and_o affliction_n it_o may_v seem_v at_o the_o first_o sight_n affliction_n whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a and_o how_o far_o forth_o to_o pray_v for_o or_o against_o tentation_n and_o affliction_n that_o see_v the_o end_n of_o temptation_n be_v to_o provoke_v we_o to_o sin_n and_o the_o end_n of_o affliction_n be_v to_o destroy_v the_o creature_n that_o therefore_o it_o be_v unlawful_a to_o pray_v for_o they_o again_o it_o may_v in_o like_a manner_n be_v think_v that_o see_v through_o temptation_n god_n work_v much_o good_a unto_o we_o and_o that_o through_o affliction_n god_n teach_v we_o and_o nurter_v we_o in_o his_o law_n therefore_o it_o be_v very_o lawful_a to_o pray_v for_o a_o temptation_n and_o affliction_n there_o be_v a_o triple_a solution_n of_o this_o doubt_n some_o say_v thus_o 1_o that_o see_v temptation_n and_o affliction_n be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n the_o mean_n and_o punishment_n of_o sin_n therefore_o in_o no_o case_n we_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o they_o but_o against_o they_o for_o god_n forbid_v we_o to_o practice_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v a_o mean_n of_o sin_n and_o therefore_o consequent_o he_o will_v we_o to_o pray_v against_o all_o the_o mean_n of_o sin_n as_o temptation_n be_v and_o see_v affliction_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o first_o institution_n be_v god_n plague_n upon_o sinner_n we_o be_v to_o avoid_v they_o by_o all_o mean_v possible_a as_o we_o do_v and_o so_o to_o pray_v against_o they_o 2_o other_o distinguish_v and_o answer_v thus_o
rather_o allow_v to_o young_a christian_n that_o want_v the_o gift_n of_o conceive_v and_o utter_v a_o orderly_a prayer_n or_o to_o those_o that_o want_v audacity_n and_o boldness_n to_o speak_v before_o other_o than_o to_o strong_a and_o exercise_v christian_n unto_o who_o god_n have_v vouchsafe_v the_o gift_n of_o knowledge_n and_o utterance_n and_o boldness_n 3._o it_o be_v safe_a to_o conceive_v a_o prayer_n than_o to_o read_v a_o prayer_n for_o a_o man_n may_v read_v a_o prayer_n and_o neither_o understand_v it_o nor_o consider_v the_o matter_n thereof_o nor_o affect_v or_o desire_v the_o petition_n therein_o contain_v have_v his_o mind_n pester_v with_o wander_a thought_n but_o he_o that_o conceive_v a_o prayer_n though_o perhaps_o he_o do_v not_o desire_v the_o thing_n he_o conceive_v yet_o at_o the_o least_o he_o must_v have_v attention_n and_o so_o be_v free_a from_o many_o wander_a thought_n he_o must_v have_v also_o memory_n and_o knowledge_n and_o consideration_n needful_a all_o for_o the_o invent_v of_o matter_n and_o so_o there_o be_v less_o fear_n of_o babble_v in_o conceive_v a_o prayer_n than_o read_v one_o 4._o a_o uniform_a order_n of_o public_a prayer_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n be_v necessary_a 29.30_o 2._o chro._n 29.30_o thus_o the_o priest_n and_o levite_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n praise_v god_n with_o the_o psalm_n of_o david_n and_o asaph_n which_o psalm_n be_v frame_v of_o those_o holy_a man_n and_o send_v to_o the_o musician_n to_o be_v sing_v upon_o instrument_n thus_o all_o the_o reform_a church_n use_v thus_o the_o church_n immediate_o after_o the_o apostle_n time_n use_v yea_o thus_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n use_v the_o church_n of_o corinth_n 14.26_o 1._o cor._n 14.26_o as_o may_v probable_o be_v gather_v by_o that_o which_o paul_n speak_v concern_v the_o bring_n of_o a_o psalm_n into_o the_o public_a assembly_n of_o the_o church_n 5._o last_o notwithstanding_o in_o private_a prayer_n when_o a_o christian_a be_v alone_o call_v upon_o the_o name_n of_o god_n it_o seem_v most_o expedient_a and_o profitable_a that_o he_o pour_v out_o his_o soul_n unto_o god_n with_o such_o a_o form_n of_o word_n as_o he_o can_v for_o there_o and_o then_o the_o edification_n of_o other_o be_v no_o end_n of_o his_o prayer_n as_o it_o be_v of_o public_a prayer_n 14.26_o 1._o cor._n 14.26_o and_o the_o lord_n he_o regard_v the_o heart_n and_o he_o know_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n though_o thy_o speech_n be_v never_o so_o ragged_a and_o break_a though_o thy_o sentence_n be_v never_o so_o short_a and_o imperfect_a though_o thy_o word_n be_v rude_a and_o barbarous_a and_o yet_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o labour_v to_o glorify_v god_n with_o the_o best_a of_o his_o lip_n also_o but_o here_o certain_a objection_n must_v be_v answer_v which_o be_v allege_v against_o the_o use_n of_o read_v prayer_n objection_n for_o they_o say_v it_o be_v to_o quench_v the_o spirit_n &_o to_o limit_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o answer_v whereof_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o as_o he_o can_v be_v say_v to_o quench_v the_o spirit_n that_o read_v a_o chapter_n of_o holy_a scripture_n and_o no_o more_o or_o that_o preach_v a_o sermon_n which_o he_o have_v premeditate_v so_o also_o he_o can_v be_v say_v to_o quench_v the_o spirit_n that_o pray_v the_o a_o portion_n of_o holy_a scripture_n as_o the_o lord_n prayer_n or_o the_o salutation_n of_o paul_n or_o a_o psalm_n of_o david_n or_o any_o other_o prayer_n agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n which_o he_o have_v premeditate_v before_o and_o commit_v to_o memory_n for_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o limit_v though_o keep_v within_o the_o bound_n of_o holy_a scripture_n as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v again_o in_o a_o prayer_n which_o a_o man_n read_v though_o a_o man_n do_v not_o speak_v every_o thing_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v into_o his_o heart_n yet_o he_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n for_o to_o quench_v the_o spirit_n be_v to_o oppose_v â—gainst_a the_o voice_n of_o the_o spirit_n neither_o be_v it_o to_o limit_v or_o stint_v the_o spirit_n if_o a_o man_n pray_v it_o with_o his_o soul_n though_o he_o speak_v not_o the_o word_n for_o example_n sake_n i_o say_v the_o lord_n prayer_n yea_o when_o i_o speak_v these_o word_n give_v we_o this_o day_n our_o daily_a bread_n there_o come_v into_o my_o soul_n by_o the_o motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n this_o petition_n grant_v i_o grace_n to_o be_v content_a with_o the_o mediocrity_n thou_o have_v give_v i_o if_o i_o pray_v this_o in_o my_o heart_n though_o i_o do_v not_o utter_v these_o very_a word_n yet_o i_o can_v be_v say_v to_o stint_v the_o spirit_n for_o the_o substance_n of_o that_o petition_n be_v comprehend_v in_o that_o four_o petition_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n so_o likewise_o read_v any_o prayer_n agreeable_a to_o holy_a scripture_n and_o have_v attention_n to_o the_o matter_n read_v though_o many_o motion_n come_v into_o my_o mind_n upon_o consideration_n of_o the_o word_n of_o that_o prayer_n which_o i_o utter_v not_o in_o particular_a speech_n yet_o i_o utter_v they_o in_o general_a for_o they_o be_v all_o comprehend_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o that_o otherwise_o they_o may_v just_o be_v term_v wander_v thought_n though_o good_a prayer_n at_o other_o time_n last_o public_a want_n be_v always_o know_v and_o may_v be_v express_v in_o the_o public_a liturgy_n also_o private_a want_n and_o blessing_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n know_v as_o at_o meat_n labour_n rest_n recreation_n physic_n etc._n etc._n secret_n want_n and_o blessing_n may_v be_v acknowledge_v in_o secret_a prayer_n if_o any_o extraordinary_a occasion_n occur_v extraordinary_a prayer_n according_o may_v be_v have_v they_o allege_v also_o against_o set_a prayer_n the_o speech_n of_o the_o apostle_n objection_n 8._o rom._n 8._o we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o pray_v but_o in_o a_o set_a prayer_n a_o man_n know_v what_o to_o pray_v therefore_o set_v prayer_n be_v not_o prayer_n warrantable_a for_o answer_v whereof_o the_o speech_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o another_o place_n must_v be_v remember_v 2.14.15_o 1._o cor._n 2.14.15_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v discern_v spiritual_a thing_n but_o the_o spiritual_a man_n can_v discern_v they_o so_o may_v we_o say_v the_o natural_a man_n can_v tell_v what_o to_o pray_v but_o the_o spiritual_a man_n can_v tell_v what_o to_o pray_v flesh_n and_o blood_n reveal_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n unto_o peter_n but_o god_n the_o father_n 16._o matth._n 16._o so_o flesh_n and_o blood_n can_v reveal_v unto_o we_o what_o we_o ought_v to_o pray_v but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n help_v our_o infirmity_n which_o spirit_n be_v in_o our_o saviour_n christ_n that_o teach_v the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o in_o the_o rest_n of_o god_n servant_n that_o write_v prayer_n we_o be_v not_o able_a of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o good_a but_o god_n give_v we_o ability_n 3._o 2._o cor._n 3._o so_o of_o ourselves_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o pray_v but_o god_n give_v we_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n which_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v with_o sigh_n and_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v when_o we_o have_v this_o spirit_n of_o god_n than_o we_o know_v what_o to_o pray_v and_o can_v teach_v other_o also_o this_o may_v suffice_v for_o the_o answer_n of_o their_o main_a objection_n against_o set_a prayer_n to_o conclude_v then_o christ_n have_v not_o command_v we_o to_o use_v these_o word_n and_o no_o other_o neither_o have_v he_o forbid_v we_o to_o use_v these_o word_n or_o any_o other_o holy_a form_n of_o prayer_n but_o he_o have_v leave_v it_o indifferent_a and_o arbitrarie_a to_o use_v they_o or_o not_o to_o use_v they_o as_o be_v say_v hitherto_o of_o the_o precept_n of_o prayer_n in_o the_o two_o general_a point_n thereof_o first_o that_o we_o must_v pray_v second_o how_o we_o must_v pray_v now_o follow_v the_o prayer_n itself_o in_o handle_v whereof_o we_o will_v first_o propound_v some_o general_a consideration_n after_o descend_v to_o the_o particular_a exposition_n of_o the_o word_n thereof_o in_o the_o general_a consideration_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n we_o may_v observe_v three_o thing_n prayer_n general_o of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n 1._o the_o abuse_n of_o the_o prayer_n 2._o the_o true_a and_o holy_a use_n thereof_o 3._o the_o quality_n and_o condition_n of_o it_o and_o first_o to_o entreat_v of_o the_o abuse_n of_o this_o prayer_n abuse_v how_o the_o lord_n prayer_n be_v
