and_o for_o want_v thereof_o and_o in_o case_n of_o every_o failure_n denounce_v wrath_n and_o that_o therefore_o unless_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o the_o righteousness_n of_o his_o life_n be_v formal_o impute_v to_o we_o ie_fw-fr as_o i_o suppose_v he_o mean_v so_o as_o that_o we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v make_v satisfaction_n in_o and_o by_o he_o and_o perfect_o keep_v the_o law_n in_o and_o by_o he_o by_o have_v his_o obedience_n and_o satisfaction_n impute_v to_o we_o it_o will_v be_v repugnant_a to_o the_o immutability_n and_o essential_a holiness_n of_o god_n to_o justify_v upon_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n in_o which_o assertion_n of_o his_o there_o seem_v to_o i_o to_o be_v two_o grand_a mistake_n beside_o that_o of_o a_o formal_a imputation_n he_o speak_v of_o the_o first_o be_v in_o hold_v the_o law_n to_o be_v still_o in_o force_n not_o only_o in_o require_v obedience_n to_o itself_o by_o way_n of_o duty_n which_o be_v true_a but_o in_o require_v perfection_n of_o obedience_n as_o a_o condition_n of_o justification_n and_o in_o its_o rigour_n and_o severity_n in_o denounce_v wrath_n in_o case_n of_o every_o failure_n second_o in_o that_o he_o hold_v that_o though_o we_o shall_v answer_v all_o that_o the_o gospel_n require_v both_o in_o respect_n of_o a_o righteousness_n of_o inherent_a grace_n and_o of_o a_o personal_a sincere_a obedience_n yet_o we_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v without_o the_o formal_a imputation_n of_o a_o perfect_a legal_a righteousness_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o these_o two_o be_v grand_a mistake_n indeed_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o demonstrate_v to_o you_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o first_o of_o they_o i_o conceive_v the_o scripture_n will_v warrant_v i_o to_o affirm_v that_o god_n by_o sound_v a_o new_a covenant_n a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n with_o the_o world_n in_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o mediatory_a undertake_n have_v rescind_v or_o supersede_v the_o rigour_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o original_a law_n in_o two_o thing_n first_o as_o a_o legal_a perfection_n of_o obedience_n be_v by_o it_o require_v as_o the_o condition_n of_o justification_n and_o life_n and_o second_o as_o it_o do_v denounce_v wrath_n and_o condemnation_n in_o case_n of_o every_o failure_n although_o the_o original_a law_n of_o nature_n the_o moral_a law_n be_v eternal_a and_o unchangeable_a in_o require_v obedience_n by_o way_n of_o duty_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o in_o the_o foresay_a rigour_n and_o severity_n of_o its_o sanction_n to_o establish_v the_o law_n again_o in_o this_o sense_n after_o the_o covenant_n of_o promise_n be_v make_v will_v be_v according_a to_o the_o apostle_n reason_v to_o make_v faith_n void_a and_o the_o promise_n of_o none_o effect_n rom._n 4.14_o gal._n 3.18_o for_o the_o old_a and_o new_a term_n of_o justification_n can_v consist_v together_o without_o the_o one_o evacuate_v the_o other_o if_o by_o grace_n say_v the_o justification_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o now_o sir_n if_o what_o i_o have_v suggest_v have_v any_o weight_n in_o it_o which_o i_o submit_v to_o trial_n than_o you_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o justification_n of_o believer_n proper_o so_o call_v plain_o and_o without_o figure_n assert_v in_o scripture_n and_o yet_o not_o consist_v in_o that_o imputation_n of_o righteousness_n neither_o which_o mr._n f._n so_o much_o contend_v for_o nor_o yet_o in_o remission_n of_o sin_n neither_o the_o necessity_n of_o which_o he_o will_v infer_v in_o case_n the_o other_o be_v deny_v but_o in_o the_o imputation_n of_o that_o believe_a and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n for_o righteousness_n to_o which_o mr._n s._n say_v pardon_n be_v promise_v and_o if_o so_o then_o mr._n f._n have_v only_o show_v we_o what_o he_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o do_v but_o not_o at_o all_o perform_v what_o he_o undertake_v but_o when_o mr._n f._n assert_n that_o unless_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o his_o sense_n of_o imputation_n we_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v proper_o but_o only_o to_o be_v pardon_v and_o that_o to_o be_v pardon_v be_v not_o to_o be_v justify_v proper_o he_o proceed_v therein_o upon_o a_o mistake_a ground_n and_o confound_v the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o original_a law_n and_o gospel_n covenant_n together_o for_o he_o suppose_v that_o in_o order_n to_o our_o justification_n in_o a_o proper_a sense_n we_o must_v one_o way_n or_o other_o have_v such_o a_o righteousness_n as_o will_v answer_v the_o demand_n of_o the_o law_n in_o point_n of_o perfect_a obedience_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n otherwise_o and_o which_o will_v justify_v we_o against_o all_o accusation_n to_o the_o contrary_n and_o that_o therefore_o we_o have_v no_o such_o righteousness_n of_o our_o own_o we_o can_v be_v justify_v but_o by_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n make_v we_o by_o imputation_n that_o we_o may_v therewith_o answer_v the_o demand_n and_o accusation_n of_o the_o law_n or_o in_o case_n we_o shall_v not_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o imputation_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n to_o answer_v the_o demand_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o that_o then_o we_o must_v be_v justify_v by_o be_v pardon_v and_o pardon_n be_v not_o justification_n proper_o so_o call_v but_o while_o he_o argue_v at_o this_o rate_n he_o overlook_v what_o god_n have_v do_v to_o supersede_n and_o relax_v the_o rigorous_a term_n of_o the_o primitive_a law_n by_o a_o new_a law_n of_o grace_n establish_v in_o christ_n with_o all_o mankind_n and_o according_a to_o which_o he_o will_v now_o proceed_v with_o we_o and_o not_o according_a to_o the_o rigorous_a demand_n of_o the_o primitive_a law_n by_o reason_n of_o this_o to_o wit_n god_n relax_v the_o old_a and_o introduce_v new_a term_n of_o justification_n and_o life_n it_o follow_v that_o neither_o a_o perfect_a legal_a righteousness_n be_v now_o necessary_a to_o justification_n nor_o yet_o that_o justification_n must_v consist_v only_o in_o pardon_n of_o sin_n though_o we_o have_v no_o such_o righteousness_n inherent_a or_o impute_a in_o mr._n f_n sense_n of_o imputation_n as_o will_v answer_v the_o demand_n of_o the_o law_n in_o point_n of_o perfection_n such_o a_o righteousness_n be_v not_o now_o will_v have_v be_v count_v our_o legal_a righteousness_n have_v we_o never_o sin_v although_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n active_a and_o passive_a obedience_n be_v that_o righteousness_n by_o which_o the_o covenant_n it_o self_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o be_v conditional_o obtain_v for_o we_o and_o grant_v to_o we_o and_o although_o it_o be_v of_o god_n mercy_n and_o by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n merit_n and_o the_o promise_n and_o ordination_n of_o god_n that_o we_o come_v to_o have_v any_o title_n to_o pardon_n and_o life_n when_o we_o have_v perform_v the_o condition_n and_o not_o by_o virtue_n of_o any_o merit_n or_o desert_n in_o the_o performance_n itself_o yet_o this_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o entitle_v we_o to_o pardon_n and_o life_n until_o we_o have_v perform_v the_o condition_n on_o our_o part_n require_v thereto_o which_o be_v such_o a_o believe_v as_o aforesaid_a and_o in_o the_o last_o issue_n we_o be_v account_v by_o god_n righteous_a or_o unrighteous_a according_a as_o we_o have_v or_o have_v not_o perform_v the_o condition_n god_n design_n towards_o we_o be_v to_o restore_v we_o to_o happiness_n and_o in_o order_n thereto_o to_o recover_v and_o bring_v again_o into_o our_o nature_n those_o virtue_n in_o which_o our_o likeness_n to_o god_n at_o first_o do_v consist_v by_o the_o loss_n of_o which_o we_o become_v miserable_a and_o without_o a_o recovery_n of_o which_o we_o can_v be_v happy_a and_o as_o most_o suitable_a to_o this_o design_n god_n have_v make_v such_o a_o faith_n the_o condition_n of_o pardon_n and_o life_n as_o by_o which_o the_o renovation_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v gradual_o wrought_v and_o without_o which_o we_o have_v no_o ground_n to_o expect_v those_o benefit_n how_o desirable_a soever_o make_v righteous_a only_o by_o what_o our_o saviour_n have_v do_v without_o we_o without_o be_v renew_v by_o a_o work_n of_o faith_n within_o we_o to_o suppose_v we_o be_v by_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n deliver_v from_o the_o danger_n of_o the_o hell_n without_o we_o without_o be_v at_o all_o free_v from_o the_o hell_n within_o we_o which_o consist_v in_o unnatural_a lust_n and_o the_o uneasy_a effect_n of_o they_o to_o imagine_v that_o god_n shall_v restore_v we_o to_o a_o participation_n of_o the_o privilege_n of_o his_o child_n by_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n without_o restore_v we_o at_o all_o to_o a_o participation_n in_o the_o divine_a and_o new_a nature_n of_o his_o child_n be_v absurd_a and_o that_o which_o be_v oppose_v by_o the_o constant_a tenor_n of_o divine_a doctrine_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o yet_o these_o be_v but_o the_o natural_a consequence_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n alone_o and_o of_o
be_v justify_v by_o faith_n alone_o as_o abstract_v from_o its_o effect_n of_o renew_v we_o and_o if_o either_o of_o these_o doctrine_n be_v true_a we_o may_v have_v a_o immediate_a title_n to_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n without_o repentance_n and_o without_o be_v bear_v again_o unless_o we_o will_v suppose_v that_o justification_n do_v not_o immediate_o entitle_v we_o to_o these_o which_o
