mercy_n from_o presumption_n in_o i_o or_o from_o true_a faith_n it_o concern_v every_o one_o to_o get_v this_o case_n of_o conscience_n answer_v now_o i_o know_v no_o great_a help_n for_o the_o answer_v this_o case_n of_o conscience_n than_o this_o one_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o have_v thou_o quiet_a and_o ease_v and_o have_v thou_o hope_v of_o god_n mercy_n and_o do_v that_o bring_v thou_o quiet_a if_o it_o be_v but_o presumption_n it_o make_v thou_o secure_a it_o make_v thou_o barren_a and_o sluggish_a but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o thou_o have_v ease_n and_o quiet_a in_o thy_o spirit_n and_o thou_o find_v that_o the_o more_o that_o ease_n and_o quiet_a increase_v the_o more_o fruitful_a thou_o be_v in_o all_o good_a work_n it_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o active_a and_o stir_v in_o all_o good_a work_n this_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o it_o come_v from_o faith_n as_o you_o hear_v before_o a_o gracious_a heart_n have_v the_o more_o activeness_n in_o it_o the_o more_o ease_v it_o have_v now_o as_o his_o activeness_n in_o goodness_n cause_v easiness_n in_o his_o heart_n so_o the_o easiness_n in_o his_o heart_n cause_v activeness_n in_o goodness_n there_o be_v a_o mutuallness_n in_o these_o two_o and_o indeed_o this_o latter_a be_v the_o more_o facile_a for_o people_n to_o exam_n in_o themselves_o by_o perhaps_o every_o one_o can_v group_n to_o that_o activeness_n of_o heart_n but_o now_o have_v it_o this_o power_n upon_o your_o heart_n that_o you_o be_v more_o fruitful_a than_o before_o this_o be_v the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n if_o it_o do_v so_o nine_o and_o then_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o carnal_a heart_n have_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v from_o hence_o because_o he_o have_v but_o only_o one_o principle_n in_o his_o heart_n when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o world_n he_o be_v act_v but_o by_o the_o same_o principle_n in_o both_o there_o be_v not_o a_o contrary_a principle_n in_o his_o heart_n one_o that_o carry_v he_o one_o way_n and_o another_o that_o carry_v he_o another_o way_n but_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n be_v this_o that_o he_o find_v a_o strong_a principle_n that_o overcome_v a_o contrary_a principle_n of_o corruption_n in_o he_o there_o lie_v his_o ease_n a_o carnal_a heart_n go_v on_o and_o perform_v duty_n and_o have_v not_o divers_a principle_n in_o his_o heart_n to_o carry_v he_o this_o way_n or_o that_o way_n but_o have_v only_o one_o principle_n a_o carnal_a principle_n that_o carry_v he_o on_o to_o serve_v his_o own_o end_n and_o sometime_o he_o can_v serve_v his_o end_n in_o one_o thing_n &_o sometime_o in_o another_o thing_n but_o one_o that_o be_v godly_a find_v ease_n from_o hence_o from_o the_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n that_o do_v overcome_v his_o corruption_n i_o find_v a_o stir_n in_o my_o heart_n but_o i_o thank_v god_n i_o can_v get_v the_o victory_n the_o ease_n of_o a_o godly_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o victory_n that_o it_o get_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o a_o carnal_a heart_n your_o civil_a man_n do_v not_o find_v ease_n from_o their_o victory_n because_o what_o they_o do_v be_v not_o suitable_a to_o they_o but_o a_o godly_a man_n find_v that_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o grace_n that_o oppose_v the_o principle_n of_o lust_n and_o corruption_n and_o therefore_o can_v say_v since_o i_o set_v my_o heart_n towards_o god_n and_o his_o way_n i_o have_v find_v more_o corruption_n than_o before_o stir_v but_o i_o thank_v god_n i_o have_v get_v victory_n over_o they_o i_o find_v a_o conquest_n get_v over_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v stir_v in_o my_o soul_n and_o that_o be_v my_o ease_n another_o man_n he_o find_v no_o corruption_n stir_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n if_o he_o find_v ease_n but_o now_o a_o godly_a man_n find_v a_o contrary_a principle_n to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a stir_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o then_o find_v god_n grace_n come_v in_o upon_o his_o heart_n to_o help_v he_o against_o that_o corruption_n and_o this_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a to_o he_o ten_o and_o then_o the_o last_o be_v this_o that_o the_o ease_n the_o one_o have_v come_v from_o this_o that_o all_o that_o he_o do_v he_o preforme_v in_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o he_o do_v not_o see_v any_o need_n of_o any_o further_a strength_n than_o that_o which_o he_o have_v in_o himselelf_n to_o enable_v he_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o so_o he_o find_v ease_v as_o a_o man_n find_v his_o trade_n to_o be_v easy_a if_o he_o trade_v with_o his_o own_o stock_n and_o have_v nothing_o but_o his_o own_o stock_n to_o trade_n with_o and_o trade_n in_o no_o high_a thing_n than_o what_o himself_o can_v reach_v unto_o whereas_o another_o man_n that_o must_v have_v the_o stock_n of_o other_o man_n to_o trade_n with_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o trouble_n that_o see_v his_o trade_n require_v more_o stock_n than_o his_o own_o it_o be_v so_o with_o a_o gracious_a heart_n he_o set_v upon_o duty_n so_o as_o needs_o he_o find_v he_o more_o stock_n than_o his_o own_o his_o trade_n be_v beyond_o his_o own_o strength_n but_o now_o a_o godly_a heart_n when_o he_o come_v to_o want_v strength_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o christ_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o the_o promise_n and_o when_o he_o have_v get_v strength_n from_o christ_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n from_o the_o promise_n oh_o now_o he_o find_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o his_o duty_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o in_o the_o next_o point_n why_o the_o sant_n find_v difficulty_n many_o time_n they_o will_v think_v to_o be_v trade_v with_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o their_o own_o stock_n whenas_o the_o thing_n they_o trade_v about_o be_v beyond_o their_o own_o strength_n but_o now_o when_o they_o can_v look_v high_o and_o see_v a_o fullness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o mediator_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o of_o his_o fullness_n we_o must_v receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n and_o fetch_v strength_n from_o this_o oh_o then_o here_o be_v quiet_a and_o ease_n when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o trade_n with_o another_o stock_n observe_v this_o you_o will_v find_v it_o as_o certain_a as_o can_v be_v all_o those_o that_o be_v mere_a civil_a people_n that_o find_v it_o so_o easy_a to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n they_o be_v never_o sensible_a of_o any_o need_n they_o have_v of_o any_o more_o strength_n than_o their_o own_o whereas_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n be_v heavy_a than_o any_o natural_a strength_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v and_o therefore_o if_o you_o find_v ease_n in_o that_o you_o have_v strength_n of_o your_o own_o to_o perform_v it_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n but_o now_o when_o you_o find_v your_o own_o strength_n too_o short_a when_o you_o go_v to_o perform_v any_o duty_n and_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difficulty_n you_o can_v go_v to_o christ_n and_o to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o to_o the_o promise_n and_o there_o fetch_v in_o strength_n you_o have_v ease_n and_o quiet_a oh_o that_o you_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n that_o when_o you_o go_v out_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o you_o find_v they_o difficult_a and_o hard_a that_o then_o you_o can_v go_v out_o to_o christ_n and_o the_o covenannt_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o promise_n and_o fetch_v strength_n from_o they_o to_o perform_v duty_n this_o be_v the_o ease_n of_o a_o godly_a heart_n when_o it_o find_v ease_n in_o god_n way_n after_o this_o manner_n and_o all_o you_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n know_v that_o whatsoever_o ease_n you_o have_v find_v hitherto_o it_o be_v not_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n but_o rather_o of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n chap._n cxxxix_o divers_a objection_n answer_v the_o easiness_n of_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o three_o particular_a mention_v in_o chap._n 139._o quest_n but_o do_v we_o not_o find_v that_o christ_n have_v say_v in_o deal_n of_o ease_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o jew_n that_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n because_o that_o their_o service_n itself_o be_v very_o chargeable_a to_o their_o outward_a estate_n their_o sacrifice_n that_o they_o do_v offer_v up_o to_o god_n how_o chargeable_a be_v it_o what_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o estate_n of_o man_n do_v go_v forth_o partly_o in_o the_o maintenance_n of_o their_o levite_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o murmur_v now_o for_o a_o little_a money_n for_o maintenance_n of_o minister_n but_o there_o if_o the_o account_n be_v sum_v up_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o levite_n be_v a_o great_a part_n of_o their_o estate_n not_o bare_o the_o ten_o of_o their_o sacrifice_n they_o have_v their_o city_n divers_a forty_o or_o more_o city_n that_o be_v they_o for_o their_o possession_n and_o many_o thing_n may_v be_v show_v that_o way_n the_o mighty_a charge_n that_o they_o be_v at_o for_o the_o service_n of_o god_n several_a way_n not_o tithe_n only_o but_o city_n and_o the_o like_a now_o god_n have_v in_o a_o great_a part_n ease_v we_o of_o those_o thing_n that_o he_o require_v of_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n there_o be_v nothing_o now_o require_v but_o what_o be_v in_o moral_a equity_n what_o be_v in_o common_a reason_n due_a to_o the_o laborer_n for_o his_o work_n only_o somewhat_o be_v due_a by_o that_o scripture_n thou_o shall_v not_o muzzle_n the_o mouth_n of_o the_o ox_n that_o tread_v out_o the_o corn_n so_o that_o all_o the_o maintenance_n now_o for_o the_o work_n of_o god_n be_v due_a in_o a_o way_n of_o common_a reason_n but_o there_o be_v other_o thing_n require_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o that_o be_v a_o ease_n that_o be_v very_o suitable_a to_o many_o man_n to_o have_v ease_v that_o way_n from_o their_o outward_a service_n yet_o certain_o the_o lord_n as_o we_o shall_v hear_v more_o by_o and_o by_o require_v of_o we_o more_o service_n other_o way_n and_o then_o three_o in_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n there_o the_o very_a service_n of_o god_n have_v a_o kind_n of_o burden_n in_o it_o for_o there_o be_v so_o many_o external_a performance_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n call_v they_o beggarly_a rudiment_n so_o many_o outward_a ceremony_n outward_a thing_n that_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o they_o be_v mean_a thing_n and_o childish_a thing_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o be_v call_v by_o the_o apostle_n beggarly_a rudiment_n and_o true_o one_o will_v think_v that_o when_o we_o shall_v read_v such_o a_o scripture_n as_o that_o that_o shall_v call_v the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n beggarly_a rudiment_n that_o be_v the_o ceremony_n appoint_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o yet_o when_o they_o come_v to_o be_v abrogate_a they_o be_v call_v but_o beggarly_a rudiment_n one_o will_v admire_v how_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o any_o one_o that_o profess_v christianity_n shall_v come_v and_o conform_v themselves_o to_o so_o many_o ceremony_n as_o they_o have_v do_v to_o such_o beggarly_a rudiment_n certain_o these_o must_v needs_o be_v beggarly_a rudiment_n much_o more_o and_o what_o a_o strange_a pass_n be_v we_o bring_v into_o that_o we_o shall_v count_v such_o thing_n the_o great_a ornament_n of_o god_n service_n whenas_o god_n do_v not_o require_v they_o but_o at_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o bondage_n of_o the_o outward_a ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n though_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v once_o appoint_v by_o god_n to_o spend_v so_o many_o day_n as_o they_o do_v from_o their_o outward_a business_n this_o be_v somewhat_o sure_o if_o it_o be_v in_o man_n power_n to_o appoint_v ceremony_n and_o make_v day_n holy_a as_o many_o do_v undertake_v heretofore_o we_o have_v be_v bring_v into_o a_o great_a bondage_n than_o ever_o the_o jew_n be_v under_o the_o law_n but_o christ_n will_v have_v ease_n in_o the_o outward_a administration_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o then_o likewise_o though_o god_n have_v appoint_v some_o outward_a thing_n yet_o very_a few_o for_o the_o outward_a part_n of_o his_o worship_n what_o a_o few_o thing_n be_v appoint_v by_o jesus_n christ_n whereas_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v multitude_n of_o external_a thing_n yea_o and_o how_o easy_a be_v they_o that_o christ_n have_v appoint_v for_o the_o outward_a part_n of_o his_o worship_n whereas_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n it_o be_v hard_a as_o circumcision_n what_o a_o hard_a thing_n be_v it_o to_o have_v to_o foreskin_n of_o the_o flesh_n cut_v off_o and_o you_o know_v it_o make_v they_o sore_o when_o the_o man_n of_o sichem_n be_v circumcise_v they_o be_v so_o sore_o that_o two_o or_o three_o man_n be_v able_a to_o destroy_v a_o whole_a city_n now_o christ_n have_v require_v no_o such_o hardness_n of_o we_o and_o true_o that_o may_v be_v one_o thing_n that_o may_v make_v we_o much_o doubt_n of_o the_o jew_n no_o one_o duty_n so_o difficult_a to_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o that_o thing_n iâ—_n now_o certain_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o himself_o say_v it_o be_v but_o easy_a it_o be_v not_o hard_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n in_o such_o external_a service_n christ_n do_v not_o change_v one_o ordinance_n from_o another_o to_o make_v it_o hard_o there_o be_v no_o ordinance_n that_o christ_n do_v change_v from_o the_o law_n to_o the_o gospel_n to_o make_v it_o hard_o and_o there_o be_v no_o mercy_n that_o be_v allow_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n but_o be_v allow_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o further_o that_o be_v another_o argument_n that_o be_v very_o persuasive_a to_o the_o believer_n and_o his_o child_n for_o if_o god_n shall_v deny_v this_o condition_n to_o the_o child_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n it_o will_v make_v the_o gospel_n to_o be_v hard_a than_o the_o law_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o deny_v such_o a_o mercy_n to_o believer_n child_n will_v be_v a_o hard_a yoke_n to_o believer_n a_o great_a burden_n to_o they_o than_o all_o the_o ceremony_n be_v to_o the_o jew_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law._n as_o suppose_v this_o if_o a_o believer_n shall_v plead_v thus_o lord_n there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o thou_o do_v not_o only_o receive_v i_o into_o covenant_n but_o receive_v my_o child_n too_o and_o give_v my_o child_n the_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n likewise_o and_o there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o i_o have_v such_o a_o privilege_n that_o not_o only_o i_o but_o my_o child_n be_v in_o a_o different_a condition_n from_o the_o heathen_a the_o heathen_a round_o about_o i_o be_v not_o in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o i_o be_v in_o in_o regard_n of_o my_o posterity_n and_o i_o count_v this_o a_o great_a mercy_n but_o lord_n since_o the_o time_n i_o be_v convert_v and_o embrace_v christian_a religion_n and_o since_o the_o time_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v come_v as_o suppose_v a_o jew_a shall_v speak_v thus_o one_o that_o be_v a_o jew_a before_o christ_n time_n and_o shall_v live_v till_o christ_n come_v and_o shall_v plead_v thus_o lord_n have_v thou_o bring_v a_o great_a burden_n on_o i_o since_o christ_n come_v than_o i_o have_v before_o christ_n come_v for_o before_o christ_n come_v i_o have_v such_o a_o liberty_n that_o be_v as_o dear_a to_o i_o as_o my_o life_n that_o i_o will_v not_o be_v without_o for_o all_o the_o world_n that_o i_o shall_v not_o only_o have_v myself_o but_o my_o child_n separate_v from_o the_o world_n and_o be_v in_o covenant_n with_o thou_o and_o under_o the_o seal_n of_o thy_o grace_n but_o lord_n since_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o since_o i_o embrace_v religion_n though_o i_o may_v come_v and_o take_v the_o seal_n though_o i_o may_v be_v in_o covenant_n with_o thou_o yet_o now_o my_o child_n may_v not_o there_o be_v no_o
live_v among_o but_o now_o because_o in_o some_o thing_n thou_o be_v bind_v up_o have_v a_o tender_a conscience_n that_o you_o must_v go_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o this_o grace_n first_o there_o be_v no_o grace_n in_o scripture_n that_o god_n speak_v more_o honourable_o of_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o more_o honourable_a esteem_n of_o in_o prov._n 16._o 19_o see_v what_o the_o testimony_n of_o god_n be_v of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n better_o it_o be_v to_o be_v of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n with_o the_o lowly_a than_o to_o divide_v the_o spoil_n with_o the_o proud_a .._o here_o be_v god_n testimony_n here_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o people_n compare_v one_o with_o another_o the_o humble_a spirit_n and_o he_o that_o divide_v the_o spoil_n with_o be_v that_o grace_n that_o be_v most_o useful_a and_o necessary_a to_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o that_o upon_o this_o ground_n for_o god_n though_o he_o do_v intend_v salvation_n to_o some_o wretched_a and_o unworthy_a creature_n yet_o he_o have_v so_o wrought_v in_o his_o wisdom_n that_o he_o will_v save_v they_o in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o he_o shall_v have_v all_o the_o glory_n and_o the_o creature_n shall_v be_v debase_v as_o much_o as_o can_v be_v we_o can_v think_v how_o a_o infinite_a wisdom_n can_v find_v out_o a_o way_n to_o save_v mankind_n and_o that_o in_o a_o way_n of_o covenant_n too_o to_o save_v lose_v man_n in_o a_o way_n of_o a_o covenant_n wherein_o man_n that_o be_v save_v shall_v be_v debase_v and_o the_o name_n of_o god_n so_o much_o honour_v as_o that_o way_n be_v that_o god_n have_v do_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o it_o be_v this_o god_n will_v save_v they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o covenant_n a_o covenant_n you_o will_v say_v that_o be_v somewhat_o it_o be_v true_a god_n will_v require_v somewhat_o of_o man_n in_o the_o covenant_n i_o but_o yet_o in_o that_o manner_n as_o man_n be_v as_o much_o debase_v as_o possible_o can_v be_v for_o the_o condition_n be_v so_o as_o man_n must_v be_v empty_v of_o all_o be_v nothing_o in_o himself_o he_o must_v go_v whole_o out_o of_o himself_o for_o a_o principle_n of_o life_n yea_o and_o when_o he_o have_v it_o he_o must_v live_v upon_o that_o that_o be_v out_o of_o himself_o for_o so_o a_o christian_a must_v do_v not_o only_o go_v first_o in_o upon_o he_o still_o upon_o the_o life_n that_o be_v in_o he_o so_o that_o man_n be_v the_o most_o empty_v and_o debase_v in_o that_o way_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o save_v he_o by_o he_o must_v deny_v himself_o in_o the_o great_a manner_n that_o a_o creature_n can_v be_v put_v to_o we_o think_v this_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o self_n denial_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v mean_a in_o the_o world_n and_o to_o suffer_v much_o in_o the_o world_n for_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o self_n denial_n i_o confess_v but_o when_o the_o soul_n go_v to_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v the_o great_a self_n denial_n of_o all_o for_o there_o a_o man_n do_v not_o only_o deny_v his_o outward_a comfort_n here_o for_o the_o present_a but_o he_o deny_v his_o own_o righteousness_n his_o own_o ability_n his_o own_o gift_n yea_o and_o afterward_o when_o he_o come_v to_o have_v grace_n he_o deny_v they_o too_o and_o whole_o go_v out_o of_o himself_o for_o justification_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o all_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v excellent_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n he_o do_v look_v upon_o as_o dross_n and_o dung_n in_o comparison_n of_o what_o he_o find_v in_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o faith_n be_v that_o that_o carry_v with_o it_o as_o great_a a_o self_n denial_n as_o we_o can_v conceive_v a_o creature_n be_v capable_a of_o in_o this_o world_n faith_n make_v one_o like_o christ_n in_o that_o respect_n christ_n though_o he_o be_v glorious_a yet_o he_o do_v empty_v himself_o faith_n make_v one_o empty_a one_o self_n of_o all_o that_o be_v good_a and_o therefore_o of_o all_o grace_n humility_n be_v the_o most_o subservient_fw-fr and_o helpful_a to_o faith_n and_o that_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o faith_n and_o therefore_o that_o place_n be_v very_o observable_a in_o the_o prophecy_n of_o habakkuck_n how_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o pride_n be_v oppose_v to_o one_o another_o in_o habakkuck_n 2._o 4._o behold_v his_o soul_n which_o be_v lift_v up_o be_v not_o upright_o in_o he_o but_o the_o just_a shall_v live_v by_o his_o faith_n this_o text_n will_v serve_v both_o for_o this_o i_o now_o bring_v it_o for_o and_o to_o confirm_v another_o thing_n that_o i_o speak_v of_o even_o now_o that_o be_v how_o humility_n preserve_v grace_n and_o keep_v man_n and_o woman_n from_o be_v apostate_n it_o be_v apparent_a here_o say_v he_o behold_v his_o soul_n which_o be_v lift_v up_o be_v not_o upright_o in_o time_n of_o trouble_n he_o will_v fall_v off_o but_o the_o just_a shall_v live_v by_o his_o faith_n it_o be_v all_o one_o where_o there_o be_v no_o pride_n there_o be_v humility_n where_o the_o heart_n be_v empty_v of_o pride_n there_o the_o heart_n be_v fit_a to_o believe_v and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o poor_a soul_n be_v
so_o long_o under_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n because_o god_n will_v be_v weaken_v the_o pride_n of_o their_o heart_n you_o think_v that_o a_o poor_a soul_n that_o have_v horror_n and_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n have_v little_a pride_n in_o he_o one_o that_o be_v ready_a to_o despair_v and_o to_o conclude_v of_o itself_o that_o it_o shall_v go_v to_o hell_n be_v that_o soul_n proud_a certain_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pride_n in_o it_o then_o you_o will_v say_v how_o will_v that_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v pride_n because_o it_o will_v fain_o find_v somewhat_o in_o itself_o to_o present_v unto_o god_n for_o its_o mercy_n though_o it_o do_v not_o think_v to_o merit_v yet_o it_o will_v present_v something_o to_o god_n for_o its_o mercy_n and_o here_o be_v pride_n the_o heart_n have_v not_o deny_v itself_o thus_o as_o to_o venture_v itself_o upon_o christ_n though_o it_o have_v nothing_o to_o present_v to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o bring_v to_o this_o to_o go_v to_o jesus_n christ_n as_o a_o mere_a beggar_n that_o have_v nothing_o to_o live_v upon_o now_o because_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o bring_v to_o this_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v many_o month_n and_o year_n without_o comfort_n the_o lord_n have_v not_o humble_v and_o empty_v the_o soul_n yet_o but_o now_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v to_o empty_v the_o soul_n perhaps_o by_o the_o work_n of_o his_o spirit_n though_o not_o by_o god_n sanctify_a grace_n though_o there_o be_v not_o a_o sanctify_a principle_n put_v into_o the_o soul_n yet_o it_o be_v that_o that_o be_v very_o like_o it_o and_o it_o be_v that_o whereby_o the_o soul_n do_v act_n by_o as_o it_o do_v when_o a_o principle_n of_o sanctification_n be_v put_v into_o it_o but_o this_o grace_n be_v very_o useful_a for_o that_o be_v one_o special_a aim_n that_o god_n have_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n though_o he_o will_v glorify_v his_o creature_n yet_o he_o will_v debase_v it_o in_o such_o a_o way_n that_o the_o creature_n shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o boast_v of_o what_o shall_v we_o boast_v of_o say_v paul_n if_o it_o be_v of_o work_n than_o we_o may_v boast_v but_o because_o it_o be_v of_o faith_n we_o have_v nothing_o to_o boast_v of_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o humility_n chap._n cxxx_o humility_n bring_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o eight_o particular_n 1._o it_o venture_v upon_o nothing_o before_o it_o see_v god_n call_v 2._o the_o head_n of_o such_o be_v low_a than_o their_o condition_n 3._o he_o be_v never_o disappoint_v in_o the_o world_n 4._o he_o will_v have_v god_n have_v his_o glory_n 5._o it_o free_v from_o opposition_n oâ—_n make_v the_o heart_n yield_v to_o it_o 6._o it_o make_v the_o heart_n rejoice_v in_o the_o property_n of_o other_o 7._o it_o be_v under_o many_o promise_n 8._o all_o cross_n be_v small_a to_o a_o humble_a heart_n but_o now_o we_o come_v to_o open_v the_o promise_n and_o then_o we_o will_v apply_v altogether_o the_o promise_n here_o make_v to_o those_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v now_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o open_v the_o rest_n that_o a_o christian_n heart_n have_v that_o come_v to_o christ_n that_o have_v be_v do_v at_o large_a in_o the_o former_a verse_n come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v therefore_o here_o i_o shall_v only_o show_v how_o humility_n and_o lowliness_n of_o heart_n give_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o great_a correspondency_n between_o those_o two_o grace_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v speak_v the_o less_o now_o of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o humility_n because_o there_o be_v a_o great_a affinity_n between_o this_o and_o meekness_n now_o one_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n must_v needs_o live_v at_o rest_n first_o because_o such_o a_o one_o dare_v not_o venture_v upon_o any_o thing_n before_o he_o see_v god_n call_v a_o bold_a spirit_n will_v venture_v upon_o any_o thing_n when_o he_o have_v not_o god_n call_v and_o there_o he_o meet_v with_o trouble_n but_o now_o a_o lowly_a spirit_n think_v thus_o be_v this_o god_n way_n have_v i_o a_o word_n for_o it_o and_o a_o call_v for_o it_o if_o i_o have_v let_v i_o go_v on_o whatever_o come_v of_o it_o if_o he_o meet_v with_o trouble_n in_o such_o a_o business_n if_o he_o can_v say_v i_o undertake_v it_o thus_o i_o have_v god_n call_v what_o abundance_n of_o rest_n have_v he_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n be_v disquiet_v in_o the_o world_n and_o trouble_v it_o be_v because_o they_o rush_v upon_o thing_n without_o god_n call_v when_o the_o soul_n can_v appeal_v to_o god_n lord_n i_o will_v not_o undertake_v such_o a_o thing_n nor_o such_o a_o thing_n though_o i_o say_v there_o may_v be_v some_o preferment_n by_o it_o and_o somewhat_o get_v by_o it_o yet_o lord_n thou_o see_v the_o uprightness_n of_o my_o heart_n that_o i_o will_v not_o venture_v upon_o it_o without_o thy_o call_v and_o then_o when_o i_o see_v that_o i_o venture_v upon_o it_o such_o a_o soul_n must_v needs_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o quiet_a second_o one_o that_o be_v humble_a have_v rest_n because_o he_o can_v never_o be_v in_o so_o low_a a_o condition_n but_o his_o heart_n be_v low_a than_o his_o condition_n this_o be_v a_o excellent_a frame_n of_o spirit_n though_o my_o estate_n be_v low_a yet_o my_o heart_n be_v low_a if_o you_o be_v able_a to_o say_v so_o you_o that_o have_v low_a estate_n your_o care_n be_v how_o you_o can_v raise_v your_o estate_n if_o i_o can_v raise_v my_o estate_n as_o high_a as_o other_o then_o i_o shall_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o peace_n and_o comfort_n no_o thy_o way_n must_v be_v to_o lowen_v thy_o heart_n that_o be_v the_o way_n to_o raise_v thy_o estate_n if_o a_o man_n affliction_n be_v above_o his_o heart_n and_o his_o heart_n beneath_o the_o affliction_n if_o the_o fire_n he_o under_o the_o fuel_n than_o the_o fire_n quick_o catch_v the_o fuel_n but_o now_o if_o the_o fire_n be_v above_o the_o fuel_n it_o will_v not_o so_o soon_o kinkle_v it_o so_o i_o say_v in_o a_o man_n affliction_n if_o a_o man_n heart_n be_v above_o his_o affliction_n i_o mean_v in_o a_o sinful_a way_n he_o have_v lift_v up_o his_o heart_n and_o he_o will_v have_v high_a thing_n than_o these_o thing_n be_v and_o these_o thing_n be_v beneath_o his_o spirit_n he_o have_v a_o high_a design_n and_o plot_n and_o aim_v at_o great_a thing_n and_o these_o thing_n be_v beneath_o what_o he_o will_v have_v oh_o then_o the_o affliction_n trouble_v the_o spirit_n but_o when_o a_o man_n spirit_n be_v beneath_o his_o affliction_n then_o a_o man_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n evangelical_o and_o then_o your_o sorrow_n will_v have_v more_o sweetness_n in_o it_o then_o all_o the_o joy_n that_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n have_v when_o all_o their_o corn_n and_o wine_n and_o oil_n be_v increase_v not_o only_a when_o god_n lift_v up_o the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n but_o even_o the_o very_a sorrow_n of_o your_o heart_n for_o sin_n may_v have_v more_o sweetness_n in_o it_o than_o all_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n have_v when_o their_o corn_n and_o wine_n and_o oil_n increase_v many_o christian_n have_v much_o bitterness_n in_o their_o sorrow_n but_o certain_o evangelical_n sorrow_n the_o tear_n of_o it_o be_v rose_n water_n that_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sweetness_n it_o be_v sweet_a both_o unto_o god_n and_o sweet_a unto_o the_o soul_n even_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v sorrow_v there_o be_v sweetness_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o legal_a terror_n and_o evangelical_n sorrow_n the_o one_o have_v nothing_o but_o bitterness_n and_o gall_n in_o it_o and_o the_o other_o nothing_o but_o sweetness_n that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n second_o another_o way_n to_o facilitate_v and_o make_v easy_a that_o we_o do_v be_v this_o labour_n to_o keep_v our_o heart_n in_o a_o constant_a readiness_n and_o preparation_n to_o every_o duty_n duty_n be_v very_o hard_a because_o we_o fall_v upon_o they_o unprepared_a we_o be_v not_o in_o a_o readiness_n continual_o unto_o every_o good_a work_n you_o know_v when_o you_o be_v set_v about_o any_o work_n and_o if_o you_o have_v many_o thing_n to_o prepare_v and_o to_o look_v for_o when_o you_o shall_v go_v about_o your_o work_n it_o will_v go_v off_o but_o heavy_o and_o it_o will_v be_v more_o troublesome_a but_o now_o when_o every_o thing_n be_v prepare_v in_o a_o readiness_n then_o how_o soon_o and_o how_o easy_a do_v the_o work_n go_v on_o when_o you_o be_v go_v to_o sea_n there_o be_v make_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o preparation_n aforehand_o now_o when_o the_o ship_n be_v rig_v and_o trim_v &_o every_o thing_n ready_a than_o you_o be_v at_o a_o instant_n able_a to_o put_v off_o and_o set_v saii_fw-la and_o go_v away_o when_o all_o thing_n be_v ready_a you_o go_v off_o with_o ease_n if_o you_o will_v entertain_v guest_n if_o they_o come_v upon_o you_o sudden_o and_o you_o have_v nothing_o ready_a what_o a_o deal_n of_o stir_n be_v in_o the_o house_n what_o run_v up_o and_o down_o this_o way_n and_o that_o way_n but_o now_o if_o thing_n be_v ready_a when_o they_o come_v they_o be_v entertain_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o delight_n and_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o house_n be_v in_o order_n and_o thing_n go_v off_o very_o easy_o and_o there_o be_v no_o trouble_n in_o it_o true_o thus_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o a_o christian_a he_o shall_v not_o only_o perform_v duty_n now_o and_o then_o but_o his_o life_n shall_v be_v a_o constant_a walk_n with_o god_n so_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v always_o in_o readiness_n for_o every_o duty_n that_o god_n require_v of_o he_o &_o so_o it_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a as_o now_o for_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n you_o shall_v keep_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o pray_a frame_n continual_o and_o then_o prayer_n will_v be_v easy_a it_o will_v be_v a_o easy_a thing_n for_o you_o to_o pour_v forth_o your_o soul_n to_o god_n when_o you_o keep_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o pray_a frame_n all_o the_o day_n long_o it_o may_v be_v when_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n you_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n within_o you_o your_o thought_n wander_v and_o your_o affection_n be_v dead_a and_o dull_a and_o you_o rise_v up_o discourage_v but_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n you_o do_v not_o keep_v your_o heart_n all_o the_o day_n long_o in_o a_o pray_a frame_n in_o a_o heavenly_a temper_n and_o frame_v in_o the_o day_n time_n and_o therefore_o when_o you_o come_v to_o pray_v at_o night_n there_o be_v no_o readiness_n in_o your_o heart_n to_o the_o duty_n but_o you_o be_v altogether_o indispose_v to_o it_o and_o so_o to_o come_v unto_o the_o sacrament_n you_o find_v it_o a_o great_a labour_n and_o toil_n to_o prepare_v for_o the_o sacrament_n as_o you_o shall_v i_o speak_v of_o those_o that_o make_v conscience_n of_o preparation_n many_o time_n they_o find_v it_o a_o mighty_a toil_n a_o hard_a work_n i_o but_o christian_n shall_v keep_v themselves_o always_o in_o a_o sacramental_a disposition_n a_o sacramental_a frame_n always_o have_v their_o spirit_n savour_v of_o the_o meditation_n of_o the_o death_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o nothing_o shall_v be_v more_o familiar_a to_o a_o christian_n soul_n than_o the_o meditation_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o give_v itself_o likewise_o to_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n this_o shall_v be_v continual_o and_o then_o if_o you_o shall_v receive_v the_o sacrament_n every_o day_n you_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o it_o or_o every_o week_n you_o will_v be_v fit_a for_o it_o now_o people_n think_v it_o a_o great_a matter_n and_o make_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o do_v about_o receive_v of_o it_o often_o whereas_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n they_o shall_v be_v in_o as_o great_a a_o readiness_n to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n as_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o to_o pray_v and_o that_o will_v be_v a_o mighty_a ease_n unto_o they_o therefore_o if_o thing_n be_v as_o they_o shall_v certain_o it_o will_v be_v more_o convenient_a to_o have_v it_o more_o ordinary_a and_o constant_a every_o lord_n day_n the_o sacrament_n the_o christian_n in_o the_o primitive_a time_n will_v receive_v it_o every_o day_n in_o the_o year_n and_o they_o keep_v their_o heart_n in_o readiness_n to_o such_o kind_n of_o duty_n let_v it_o be_v what_o work_n it_o will_v be_v you_o shall_v be_v patient_a in_o affliction_n if_o affliction_n come_v upon_o you_o and_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o in_o a_o readiness_n to_o alter_v your_o condition_n oh_o it_o will_v be_v a_o grievous_a burden_n to_o exercise_v patience_n it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a thing_n for_o you_o now_o you_o shall_v keep_v your_o heart_n ready_a for_o every_o condition_n that_o be_v the_o true_a work_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o keep_v the_o soul_n in_o a_o constant_a bent_n godward_o and_o that_o soul_n will_v do_v thing_n very_o easy_o sometime_o you_o have_v much_o ado_n with_o your_o child_n when_o stranger_n come_v to_o keep_v they_o in_o good_a order_n the_o reason_n be_v you_o neglect_v they_o at_o other_o time_n and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o they_o trouble_v you_o when_o stranger_n come_v but_o keep_v they_o in_o a_o good_a order_n at_o all_o time_n and_o then_o you_o will_v have_v they_o right_o at_o those_o time_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o heart_n keep_v the_o heart_n prepare_v and_o ready_a to_o every_o good_a work_n and_o then_o every_o work_n will_v be_v easy_a object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v that_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o toil_n and_o labour_n to_o keep_v our_o heart_n always_o bend_v and_o ready_a to_o good_a work_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v at_o first_o it_o may_v be_v some_o labour_n and_o toil_n but_o those_o that_o have_v once_o get_v their_o heart_n into_o a_o readiness_n find_v it_o not_o so_o hard_a but_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n
of_o ease_n as_o now_o it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o toil_n for_o one_o that_o neglect_v his_o account_n he_o be_v not_o ready_a but_o his_o account_n be_v entangle_v if_o he_o be_v call_v to_o give_v a_o perfect_a account_n it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o toil_n to_o he_o but_o now_o let_v a_o man_n get_v over_o the_o difficulty_n and_o make_v all_o his_o account_n clear_a now_o for_o he_o every_o day_n to_o keep_v his_o book_n straight_o and_o clear_a this_o will_v not_o be_v so_o great_a a_o trouble_n this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o one_o christian_n and_o another_o for_o all_o the_o world_n one_o that_o shall_v take_v his_o pleasure_n all_o the_o week_n long_o and_o ride_v this_o way_n and_o the_o other_o way_n and_o neglect_v his_o book_n and_o but_o one_o day_n in_o the_o week_n will_v look_v they_o over_o he_o will_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n and_o it_o will_v break_v his_o head_n sometime_o when_o he_o have_v multitude_n of_o business_n but_o now_o the_o other_o merchant_n look_v into_o his_o book_n every_o day_n spend_v half_o a_o hour_n or_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o hour_n every_o day_n and_o he_o go_v on_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o cheerfulness_n so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n they_o think_v on_o the_o lord_n day_n they_o must_v have_v their_o heart_n in_o a_o good_a frame_n and_o temper_n but_o all_o the_o week_n they_o have_v no_o thought_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o word_n and_o now_o when_o the_o sabbath_n come_v or_o sacrament_n and_o holy_a duty_n come_v they_o be_v burdensome_a to_o they_o whereas_o another_o that_o keep_v his_o heart_n in_o a_o holy_a frame_n he_o rejoice_v in_o the_o sabbath_n for_o he_o have_v have_v a_o sabbath_n day_n frame_v of_o heart_n all_o the_o week_n long_o luther_n say_v a_o christian_n life_n shall_v be_v a_o perpetual_a sabbath_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o mean_n to_o facilitate_v every_o good_a work_n 3._o another_o be_v this_o labour_n to_o inflame_v your_o heart_n with_o love_n unto_o the_o duty_n do_v not_o do_v duty_n because_o you_o must_v do_v they_o but_o use_v all_o the_o mean_n that_o you_o can_v for_o to_o kindle_v in_o have_v rather_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n than_o go_v to_o school_n neither_o love_v their_o book_n nor_o love_v their_o master_n and_o so_o seldom_o come_v to_o any_o eminence_n of_o learning_n love_n take_v away_o all_o difficulty_n love_n be_v ashamed_a to_o complain_v of_o difficulty_n at_o any_o time_n as_o now_o take_v a_o man_n that_o love_v recreation_n that_o love_v that_o kind_n of_o sport_n of_o hunt_v or_o hawk_v if_o he_o love_v it_o he_o will_v be_v run_v in_o the_o dirt_n all_o the_o day_n long_o though_o it_o be_v a_o hot_a day_n run_v over_o hedge_n and_o ditch_n whereas_o now_o if_o such_o a_o man_n have_v not_o a_o love_n to_o such_o a_o thing_n but_o be_v enjoin_v to_o such_o a_o thing_n that_o you_o must_v all_o the_o day_n from_o morning_n to_o night_n eat_v not_o a_o bit_n of_o bread_n but_o all_o the_o day_n long_o run_v after_o dog_n over_o hedge_n and_o ditch_n and_o through_o water_n it_o will_v take_v away_o the_o love_n that_o such_o a_o one_o shall_v have_v in_o his_o sport_n and_o what_o a_o miserable_a bondage_n will_v this_o be_v so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n let_v there_o be_v love_n to_o the_o way_n of_o god_n then_o whatever_o difficulty_n there_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v in_o they_o it_o be_v take_v away_o present_o love_v to_o the_o person_n of_o jesus_n christ_n will_v take_v away_o the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n you_o know_v when_o jacob_n love_v rachel_n he_o care_v not_o how_o long_o he_o serve_v for_o she_o the_o hard_a night_n be_v not_o hard_o to_o he_o love_n god_n and_o we_o be_v endeavour_v to_o do_v more_o we_o shall_v go_v on_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o this_o encouragement_n oh_o bless_a be_v god_n for_o any_o little_a you_o shall_v have_v christian_n think_v will_v help_v you_o to_o go_v on_o in_o any_o further_a work_n that_o god_n call_v you_o unto_o and_o the_o want_n of_o this_o make_v the_o life_n of_o many_o christian_n to_o be_v very_o grievous_a
