and_o stone_n be_v in_o the_o same_o capacity_n of_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o exhortation_n promise_n and_o threaten_n we_o acknowledge_v that_o these_o be_v proper_a moral_a instrument_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n suit_v to_o work_v upon_o the_o understanding_n will_n and_o affection_n of_o man_n and_o to_o produce_v the_o effect_n of_o faith_n and_o obedience_n in_o they_o and_o see_v these_o faculty_n be_v the_o principle_n and_o subject_n of_o all_o actual_a obedience_n it_o be_v also_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v in_o man_n a_o natural_a remote_a passive_a power_n of_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n which_o be_v not_o in_o stock_n and_o stone_n but_o this_o power_n be_v never_o actual_o put_v forth_o nor_o can_v be_v without_o the_o effectual_a grace_n of_o god_n work_v in_o they_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v so_o that_o this_o notwithstanding_o as_o a_o stone_n or_o corpse_n can_v perform_v any_o operation_n of_o which_o natural_a life_n be_v the_o principle_n because_o they_o have_v it_o not_o neither_o can_v a_o man_n in_o his_o fall_a state_n put_v forth_o a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n because_o he_o be_v without_o that_o life_n and_o grace_n that_o be_v the_o principle_n thereof_o for_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o the_o body_n with_o respect_n to_o natural_a life_n so_o be_v the_o new_a nature_n to_o the_o soul_n with_o respect_n to_o a_o moral_a or_o spiritual_a life_n that_o which_o he_o offer_v that_o he_o may_v escape_v the_o force_n of_o this_o testimony_n be_v so_o remote_a from_o the_o evident_a scope_n of_o the_o text_n insist_v on_o that_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o return_v any_o particular_a answer_n thereto_o but_o leave_v his_o error_n crush_v under_o the_o weight_n of_o these_o save_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o have_v in_o they_o stain_v the_o pride_n of_o all_o flesh_n only_o i_o can_v wish_v that_o they_o into_o who_o hand_n these_o line_n may_v come_v will_v also_o consult_v dr._n owen_n in_o his_o discourse_n of_o the_o spirit_n where_o he_o do_v large_o plead_v and_o vindicate_v these_o text_n against_o the_o pelagian_o arminian_o etc._n etc._n from_o who_o mr._n c._n have_v drink_v in_o these_o notion_n for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o have_v not_o now_o produce_v they_o but_o only_o that_o i_o may_v take_v this_o opportunity_n to_o remove_v his_o objection_n against_o be_v before_o state_v and_o prove_v and_o every_o impartial_a reader_n may_v see_v how_o miserable_o he_o trifle_n in_o his_o endeavour_n to_o solve_v it_o he_o give_v you_o his_o word_n for_o it_o that_o god_n will_v excuse_v man_n from_o all_o that_o obedience_n that_o they_o have_v by_o their_o sin_n lose_v both_o power_n and_o will_v to_o perform_v but_o i_o hope_v none_o be_v so_o not_o stick_v at_o the_o gross_a pelagianism_n but_o suppose_v man_n in_o his_o fall_a state_n by_o his_o corrupt_a mind_n and_o natural_a capacity_n without_o any_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n upon_o he_o to_o be_v capable_a of_o discern_v believe_a and_o yield_v acceptable_a obedience_n to_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n howbeit_o we_o have_v hear_v the_o scripture_n teach_v other_o doctrine_n and_o the_o apostle_n paul_n be_v so_o far_o from_o this_o proud_a conceit_n of_o himself_o that_o he_o confess_v the_o quite_o contrary_a viz._n 2_o distinct_a from_o christ_n and_o gospel_n grace_n we_o be_v not_o but_o by_o the_o help_v afford_v there_o be_v power_n both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n it_o seem_v by_o these_o word_n of_o tho._n collier_n that_o he_o be_v conscious_a to_o himself_o that_o this_o text_n do_v overthrow_v his_o notion_n of_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o man_n without_o their_o capacity_n they_o believe_v and_o obey_v it_o they_o shall_v undoubted_o be_v save_v there_o be_v two_o thing_n suppose_v in_o these_o word_n the_o one_o true_a the_o other_o utter_o untrue_a a_o common_a artifice_n of_o deceiver_n to_o make_v their_o notion_n pass_v the_o more_o ready_o with_o the_o weak_a that_o can_v discover_v their_o imposture_n herein_o 1._o he_o suppose_v that_o
