bring_v into_o the_o world_n corrupt_v and_o pollute_a nature_n nature_n as_o full_a of_o sin_n as_o a_o toad_n be_v of_o poison_n that_o unto_o this_o original_a corruption_n we_o have_v add_v a_o numberless_a number_n of_o actual_a transgression_n and_o that_o in_o evil_a thought_n evil_a word_n and_o evil_a deed_n that_o by_o our_o sin_n we_o have_v make_v ourselves_o liable_a to_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n to_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n to_o all_o judgement_n and_o plague_n here_o and_o to_o eternal_a death_n and_o condemnation_n hereafter_o that_o no_o man_n can_v free_v himself_o out_o of_o that_o miserable_a condition_n whereinto_o by_o sin_n he_o have_v plunge_v himself_o neither_o can_v any_o mere_a creature_n help_v he_o that_o god_n out_o of_o his_o free_a grace_n and_o rich_a mercy_n do_v send_v his_o own_o son_n out_o of_o his_o bosom_n into_o the_o world_n to_o take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o that_o therein_o he_o may_v become_v our_o surety_n the_o lord_n supper_n be_v these_o that_o it_o be_v ordain_v by_o christ_n himself_o as_o a_o memorial_n of_o his_o great_a love_n in_o offer_v up_o his_o life_n a_o sacrifice_n for_o our_o sin_n that_o this_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n be_v a_o seal_n of_o god_n covenant_n whereby_o he_o bind_v himself_o to_o perform_v his_o promise_n make_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n for_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n therein_o that_o the_o outward_a sign_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v bread_n and_o wine_n by_o which_o be_v set_v forth_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n which_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n by_o faith_n do_v partake_v of_o in_o this_o sacrament_n that_o whosoever_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o that_o every_o one_o be_v to_o examine_v himself_o lest_o he_o eat_v and_o drink_v judgement_n to_o himself_o have_v thus_o show_v what_o be_v that_o knowledge_n which_o for_o the_o three_o particular_a viz._n the_o trial_n of_o thy_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o true_a save_a knowledge_n thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o the_o property_n thereof_o some_o whereof_o be_v these_o 1_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v experimental_a whereby_o a_o christian_a have_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o what_o he_o know_v he_o have_v not_o only_o a_o general_n and_o a_o notional_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o own_o miserable_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o he_o have_v likewise_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o attribute_n as_o of_o his_o power_n in_o support_v he_o under_o his_o trial_n and_o temptation_n of_o his_o faithfulness_n in_o make_v good_a his_o promise_n unto_o he_o he_o have_v likewise_o a_o sensible_a feel_n of_o his_o own_o wretched_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o he_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v his_o saviour_n and_o redeemer_n and_o rest_v upon_o his_o merit_n alone_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n by_o this_o then_o try_v and_o examine_v thy_o knowledge_n etc._n etc._n 2_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v humble_a and_o join_v with_o meekness_n of_o spirit_n for_o the_o more_o true_a knowledge_n a_o man_n have_v the_o more_o he_o discern_v his_o own_o ignorance_n yea_o and_o vileness_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o therefore_o you_o shall_v find_v those_o christian_n who_o be_v most_o eminent_a both_o in_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n to_o complain_v most_o as_o of_o other_o 1._o which_o the_o apostle_n plain_o express_v where_o he_o say_v knowledge_n puff_v up_o by_o this_o then_o try_v and_o examine_v thy_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o save_a knowledge_n or_o no._n 3_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v active_a and_o operative_a be_v ever_o accompany_v with_o practice_n and_o obedience_n so_o that_o it_o work_v reformation_n in_o the_o heart_n
measure_n suitable_o thereunto_o to_o that_o end_n observe_v these_o direction_n 1_o so_o soon_o as_o you_o get_v home_o withdraw_v yourself_o into_o some_o secret_a place_n and_o there_o upon_o your_o knee_n from_o your_o heart_n bless_v god_n as_o for_o hâ—s_n manifold_a favour_n mercy_n and_o blessing_n so_o especial_o and_o above_o all_o for_o the_o fountain_n of_o all_o blessing_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n for_o his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n make_v unto_o you_o in_o he_o for_o add_v the_o sacrament_n as_o seal_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o your_o faith_n and_o for_o make_v you_o that_o day_n partaker_n of_o his_o bless_a sacrament_n and_o for_o that_o comfort_n and_o refreshment_n which_o you_o find_v therein_o i_o hope_v you_o be_v not_o such_o beast_n as_o to_o forget_v to_o return_v thanks_o to_o god_n for_o the_o food_n wherewith_o your_o body_n be_v refresh_v and_o will_v you_o bless_v god_n for_o your_o corporal_a food_n christi_fw-la and_o not_o for_o your_o spiritual_a food_n whereby_o your_o soul_n be_v nourish_v unto_o everlasting_a life_n will_v you_o bless_v god_n for_o a_o crumb_n and_o not_o for_o a_o christ_n in_o who_o be_v all_o good_a thing_n contain_v in_o a_o most_o eminent_a manner_n 2_o do_v you_o find_v your_o heart_n cheer_v and_o warm_v at_o the_o lord_n supper_n beware_v of_o quench_v that_o spiritual_a heat_n which_o be_v there_o kindle_v in_o you_o by_o a_o sudden_a fall_n into_o worldly_a conference_n and_o fruitless_a discourse_n but_o labour_v to_o keep_v alive_a that_o sacred_a fire_n which_o you_o find_v then_o kindle_v in_o your_o heart_n by_o prayer_n meditation_n and_o holy_a conference_n for_o know_v that_o a_o sudden_a quench_v of_o the_o spirit_n will_n exceed_o tend_v to_o the_o harden_v of_o your_o heart_n 3_o maintain_v a_o strict_a watchfulness_n over_o yourselves_o against_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v be_v your_o soul_n wash_v at_o the_o convince_a life_n by_o exceed_v other_o in_o holiness_n and_o in_o righteousness_n you_o must_v be_v more_o frequent_a and_o fervent_a in_o family-duty_n more_o careful_a in_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n day_n more_o just_a and_o honest_a in_o your_o deal_n with_o man_n live_v so_o as_o you_o may_v credit_v your_o profession_n and_o adorn_v the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ._n and_o when_o you_o be_v of_o these_o for_o the_o duty_n of_o husband_n and_o wife_n they_o may_v be_v draw_v to_o two_o head_n 1_o to_o such_o as_o be_v common_a to_o both_o 2_o such_o as_o be_v proper_a and_o peculiar_a to_o each_o several_o the_o common_a and_o mutual_a duty_n be_v these_o i._o a_o love_a affection_n of_o one_o to_o another_o i_o call_v this_o a_o mutual_a duty_n because_o as_o the_o husband_n be_v to_o love_v his_o wife_n 33_o so_o the_o wife_n be_v to_o love_v her_o husband_n 4_o love_n be_v a_o duty_n which_o every_o christian_a owe_v to_o another_o 39_o love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o say_v our_o saviour_n where_o by_o neighbour_n be_v mean_v every_o man_n every_o woman_n so_o that_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o love_v every_o one_o even_o our_o enemy_n for_o christ_n sake_n but_o the_o near_o any_o be_v knit_v together_o the_o more_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o this_o duty_n of_o love_n and_o to_o abound_v therein_o now_o who_o be_v so_o near_o knit_v together_o as_o husband_n and_o wife_n and_o therefore_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o mutual_a love_a affection_n between_o they_o and_o that_o love_v which_o one_o show_v to_o the_o other_o will_v stir_v up_o the_o other_o to_o requite_v that_o love_n again_o so_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o lose_v by_o love_n ii_o outward_a concord_n and_o agreement_n 14_o this_o shall_v be_v as_o far_o as_o be_v possible_a with_o all_o man_n i._n e._n so_o far_o as_o may_v stand_v with_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n but_o more_o especial_o between_o husband_n and_o wife_n who_o be_v so_o near_o knit_v together_o for_o without_o concord_n and_o agreement_n between_o husband_n and_o wife_n what_o comfort_n can_v either_o find_v in_o their_o house_n the_o truth_n be_v every_o one_o life_n more_o or_o less_o comfortable_a in_o his_o house_n 17_o as_o there_o be_v concord_n and_o agreement_n there_o and_o therefore_o say_v the_o wise_a man_n better_a be_v a_o dinner_n of_o herb_n or_o root_n where_o love_n be_v than_o a_o stall_v ox_n and_o hatred_n therewith_o and_o again_o 1_o better_a be_v a_o dry_a morsel_n and_o quietness_n therewith_o than_o a_o house_n full_a of_o sacrifice_n with_o strife_n i._n e._n slender_a fare_n yea_o a_o dry_a crust_n with_o peace_n and_o concord_n be_v more_o comfortable_a than_o good_a cheer_n with_o strife_n and_o contention_n for_o that_o will_v so_o embitter_v the_o sweet_a meat_n that_o a_o man_n can_v find_v little_a relish_n in_o they_o for_o the_o better_a preserve_n of_o concord_n and_o agreement_n betwixt_o husband_n and_o wife_n take_v these_o few_o direction_n 1_o labour_n to_o suppress_v and_o keep_v down_o all_o furious_a passion_n which_o do_v usual_o occasion_v discord_n and_o dissension_n especial_o when_o one_o be_v passionate_a it_o will_v be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o other_o to_o act_v patience_n and_o to_o express_v a_o spirit_n of_o meekness_n for_o when_o both_o be_v hot_a and_o angry_a together_o than_o the_o fire_n of_o contention_n be_v like_a to_o increase_v to_o such_o a_o flame_n as_o will_v not_o sudden_o be_v quench_v and_o therefore_o i_o will_v commend_v this_o rule_n to_o marry_a person_n to_o beware_v of_o beâ—ing_v both_o angry_a together_o but_o rather_o let_v one_o be_v to_o the_o other_o like_o david_n harp_n to_o apt_a ease_n saul_n fury_n 2_o though_o the_o fire_n of_o contention_n be_v kindle_v at_o home_n yet_o let_v it_o not_o break_v forth_o into_o thy_o neighbour_n house_n but_o be_v sure_o thou_o keep_v it_o within_o
bread_n and_o wine_n into_o spiritual_a bane_n 13._o he_o therefore_o that_o cover_v his_o sin_n shall_v not_o prosper_v but_o who_o so_o confess_v and_o forsake_v they_o shall_v have_v mercy_n it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o viper_n that_o when_o she_o go_v to_o join_v with_o her_o mare_n she_o cast_v out_o all_o her_o poison_n how_o much_o more_o ought_v thou_o when_o thou_o go_v to_o have_v with_o god_n and_o which_o do_v mostgaul_v thy_o conscience_n or_o most_o disgrace_n thy_o profession_n or_o be_v great_a occasion_n of_o dull_v thy_o spirit_n that_o these_o be_v find_v out_o they_o only_o in_o and_o through_o his_o merit_n and_o mediation_n for_o though_o thou_o have_v prepare_v thyself_o after_o the_o best_a manner_n that_o thou_o can_v yet_o if_o with_o a_o impartial_a eye_n thou_o shall_v look_v back_o upon_o thy_o preparation_n how_o full_a of_o weakness_n infirmity_n and_o imperfection_n will_v thou_o find_v they_o so_o that_o if_o christ_n do_v not_o cover_v both_o thy_o person_n and_o thy_o preparation_n with_o the_o robe_n of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o sprinkle_v they_o with_o his_o blood_n neither_o thy_o person_n nor_o thy_o preparation_n will_v find_v acceptance_n with_o god_n cast_v therefore_o all_o thy_o preparation_n at_o the_o foot_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o say_v lord_n i_o come_v not_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o my_o preparation_n but_o only_o in_o thy_o strength_n i_o come_v in_o thy_o alone_a name_n and_o mediation_n to_o partake_v of_o thy_o body_n and_o of_o the_o benefit_n of_o thy_o death_n and_o passion_n and_o thou_o may_v then_o be_v confident_a that_o god_n will_v overlook_a thy_o manifold_a weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n and_o accept_v of_o thou_o and_o of_o thy_o service_n in_o and_o through_o his_o belove_a son_n jesus_n christ._n 2_o as_o thou_o be_v go_v meditate_v on_o the_o end_n and_o benefit_n of_o that_o solemn_a ordinance_n some_o whereof_o be_v these_o 1_o the_o remembrance_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n 〈◊〉_d it_o be_v institute_v as_o a_o memorial_n thereof_o 2_o the_o spiritual_a nourishment_n of_o our_o soul_n 3_o the_o strengthen_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n 4_o the_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n with_o all_o the_o blessing_n thereof_o unto_o the_o believe_a soul._n 5_o the_o increase_n of_o our_o spiritual_a union_n and_o communion_n with_o christ_n and_o all_o his_o member_n a_o serious_a meditation_n of_o these_o will_v be_v a_o special_a mean_n to_o stir_v up_o in_o we_o some_o spiritual_a appetite_n after_o the_o ordinance_n that_o we_o shall_v go_v with_o hunger_a and_o thirst_a desire_n after_o the_o same_o 3_o go_v with_o a_o strong_a expectation_n to_o receive_v much_o from_o christ_n in_o and_o through_o that_o ordinance_n know_v that_o christ_n will_v enlarge_v himself_o unâ—o_o all_o those_o who_o come_v with_o enlarge_a heart_n with_o a_o strong_a expectation_n of_o many_o good_a thing_n 10._o open_v thy_o mouth_n wide_a say_v the_o lord_n and_o i_o will_v fill_v it_o so_o that_o if_o thou_o open_v thy_o mouth_n wide_a in_o a_o long_a expectation_n of_o great_a matter_n he_o will_v fill_v it_o yea_o the_o more_o thy_o heart_n be_v enlarge_v in_o desire_n and_o expectation_n the_o more_o will_v god_n heart_n be_v enlarge_v in_o bounty_n towards_o thou_o as_o therefore_o god_n have_v promise_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n to_o pardon_v thy_o sin_n to_o subdue_v thy_o corruption_n to_o give_v thou_o a_o soft_a heart_n and_o the_o like_a go_v with_o a_o expectation_n of_o these_o and_o such_o like_a blessing_n and_o thou_o shall_v not_o be_v disappoint_v of_o thy_o hope_n 4_o approach_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n with_o all_o holy_a reverence_n in_o respect_n of_o god_n glorious_a majesty_n 3._o who_o be_v in_o a_o special_a manner_n present_a at_o that_o ordinance_n to_o behold_v his_o guest_n and_o will_v be_v sanctify_v by_o all_o those_o who_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o 5_o approach_v thereunto_o with_o all_o humility_n in_o respect_n of_o thy_o own_o vileness_n and_o unworthiness_n who_o be_v but_o sinful_a dust_n and_o ash_n and_o if_o thou_o have_v any_o light_n of_o grace_n in_o thou_o can_v not_o but_o be_v conscious_a to_o thyself_o of_o more_o corruption_n in_o thy_o own_o heart_n than_o thou_o know_v to_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o another_o and_o therefore_o say_v not_o such_o a_o one_o be_v ignorant_a and_o such_o a_o one_o be_v loose_a in_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n but_o say_v lord_n i_o be_o ignorant_a i_o be_o unworthy_a to_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o thou_o in_o so_o holy_a a_o ordinance_n not_o worthy_a to_o gather_v up_o the_o crumb_n under_o thy_o table_n and_o know_v that_o the_o more_o unworthy_a thou_o be_v in_o thy_o own_o account_n the_o worthy_a guest_n thou_o be_v in_o the_o account_n of_o god_n 6_o as_o thou_o be_v go_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n cast_v all_o thy_o worldly_a thought_n and_o business_n out_o of_o thy_o head_n which_o otherwise_o will_v carry_v away_o thy_o heart_n from_o the_o ordinance_n and_o exceed_o disturb_v thou_o thereat_o in_o job_n 1._o 6._o we_o read_v there_o be_v a_o day_n when_o the_o son_n of_o god_n come_v to_o present_v themselves_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o satan_n come_v also_o among_o they_o in_o like_a manner_n on_o the_o day_n when_o god_n child_n present_v themselves_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o that_o solemn_a ordinance_n satan_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o appear_v among_o they_o to_o disturb_v and_o distract_v they_o therein_o as_o much_o as_o possible_o he_o can_v by_o cast_v into_o their_o head_n vain_a and_o impertinent_a thought_n and_o therefore_o it_o concern_v thou_o to_o be_v watchful_a over_o thy_o thought_n and_o to_o keep_v thy_o heart_n close_o to_o the_o ordinance_n to_o that_o end_n it_o will_v be_v thy_o wisdom_n oft_o to_o eye_n the_o outward_a element_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o diligent_o to_o observe_v the_o outward_a rite_n and_o action_n in_o the_o ordinance_n and_o thereupon_o to_o meditate_v of_o the_o spiritual_a thing_n signify_v thereby_o these_o thing_n premise_v come_v we_o now_o to_o the_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v at_o the_o ordinance_n which_o be_v these_o i._n when_o
thou_o be_v present_a at_o the_o ordinance_n put_v forth_o all_o the_o strength_n thou_o can_v in_o the_o partake_n thereof_o i_o mean_v the_o strength_n of_o thy_o affection_n for_o though_o thou_o be_v very_o weak_a yet_o if_o thou_o put_v forth_o thy_o weakness_n god_n will_v accept_v thereof_o content_v not_o thyself_o therefore_o with_o a_o mere_a outward_a participation_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n but_o let_v thy_o care_n be_v to_o bring_v up_o thy_o heart_n and_o thy_o affection_n to_o the_o ordinance_n and_o to_o put_v forth_o what_o strength_n thou_o can_v ii_o remember_v the_o death_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v christ_n command_n in_o the_o institution_n of_o this_o ordinance_n for_o say_v he_o 19_o this_o do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o viz._n in_o remembrance_n of_o my_o bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n for_o the_o apostle_n paul_n explain_v this_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n apply_v it_o to_o his_o death_n 27._o and_o the_o show_v it_o forth_o this_o do_v say_v he_o in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o for_o as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n you_o do_v show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v so_o that_o this_o ordinance_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v institute_v for_o a_o solemn_a memorial_n of_o that_o great_a sacrifice_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o his_o death_n may_v never_o be_v forget_v but_o be_v ever_o fresh_a in_o our_o memory_n and_o why_o must_v his_o death_n be_v thus_o remember_v sure_o because_o thereby_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n ratify_v and_o seal_v our_o redemption_n purchase_v kindle_v a_o fire_n in_o the_o high-priest_n hall_n 55_o and_o cold_a drive_v the_o blood_n inward_a 2_o he_o lay_v upon_o the_o cold_a ground_n which_o be_v enough_o to_o drive_v the_o blood_n inward_a 39_o 3_o he_o be_v in_o exceed_v great_a fear_n 33_o which_o natural_o draw_v the_o blood_n from_o the_o outward_a part_n to_o the_o heart_n and_o yet_o in_o a_o cold_a night_n 39_o lie_v it_o which_o put_v he_o into_o that_o agony_n questionless_a the_o apprehension_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v as_o appear_v by_o his_o prayer_n in_o his_o agony_n father_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a let_v this_o cup_n pass_v from_o i_o now_o if_o the_o apprehension_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v be_v so_o bitter_a oh_o how_o bitter_a think_v you_o be_v his_o suffering_n upon_o the_o cross_n 46_o when_o he_o cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o word_n do_v not_o imply_v that_o the_o deity_n be_v sever_v from_o the_o humanity_n but_o christ_n body_n be_v break_v with_o torment_n and_o his_o blood_n shed_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o also_o when_o thou_o see_v other_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n thou_o shall_v then_o be_v steep_v thy_o thought_n in_o the_o meditation_n of_o christ_n bitter_a death_n and_o manifold_a suffering_n this_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n at_o the_o sacrament_n must_v not_o be_v a_o bare_a historical_a remembrance_n thereof_o content_v thyself_o with_o a_o remembrance_n of_o the_o history_n of_o christ_n death_n as_o it_o be_v set_v forth_o by_o the_o evangelist_n but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o operative_a and_o practical_a remembrance_n work_v up_o thy_o heart_n 1_o to_o a_o unfeigned_a love_n of_o god_n who_o out_o of_o his_o free_a grace_n and_o rich_a mercy_n do_v
