say_v he_o seek_v double_v out_o many_o invention_n so_o that_o a_o man_n without_o grace_n be_v double_a in_o his_o carriage_n and_o that_o from_o self-love_n from_o self-ends_a and_o aim_n and_o hereupon_o he_o must_v be_v double_a for_o there_o must_v be_v something_o that_o be_v it_o good_a in_o he_o for_o else_o evil_a be_v destructive_a of_o itself_o if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o thing_n good_a man_n can_v never_o continue_v nor_o the_o place_n can_v never_o continue_v and_o if_o all_o be_v good_a and_o all_o be_v plain_a and_o honest_a that_o will_v destroy_v the_o ill_n which_o man_n labour_v to_o nourish_v man_n have_v carnal_a project_n to_o raise_v themselves_o to_o get_v riches_n and_o this_o must_v be_v by_o ill_a mean_n there_o be_v a_o idol_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o they_o serve_v which_o they_o sacrifice_n to_o their_o self-love_n either_o in_o honour_n or_o in_o riches_n or_o in_o pleasure_n they_o set_v up_o something_o therefore_o a_o man_n without_o grace_n he_o study_v to_o be_v strong_o ill_a and_o because_o he_o can_v be_v ill_o except_o he_o be_v good_a for_o then_o all_o the_o world_n will_v see_v it_o hereupon_o come_v double_v good_a there_o must_v be_v to_o carry_v the_o ill_a he_o intend_v the_o more_o close_o ill_o there_o must_v be_v or_o else_o he_o can_v have_v his_o aim_n and_o hence_o come_v dissimulation_n and_o simulation_n the_o dissimulation_n vice_n of_o these_o time_n both_o opposite_a to_o simplicity_n and_o such_o vice_n as_o proceed_v from_o want_n of_o worth_n and_o want_n of_o strength_n for_o when_o man_n have_v no_o worth_n to_o trust_v to_o and_o yet_o will_v have_v the_o profit_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n and_o will_v have_v reputation_n than_o they_o carry_v all_o dissemble_o where_o there_o be_v strength_n of_o worth_n and_o of_o part_n and_o reputation_n there_o be_v less_o dissemble_v always_o it_o be_v a_o vice_n usual_o of_o those_o that_o have_v little_a or_o no_o virtue_n in_o they_o a_o man_n of_o strength_n carry_v thing_n open_a and_o fair_a this_o dissimulation_n it_o come_v from_o the_o want_n of_o this_o grace_n of_o simplicity_n both_o before_o the_o project_n in_o after_o before_o as_o you_o see_v in_o herod_n
hide_a wind_n and_o turn_n for_o plot_v make_v it_o more_o odious_a of_o all_o man_n doubler_n be_v most_o hateful_a how_o shall_v we_o come_v to_o attain_v this_o grace_n to_o converse_v in_o the_o world_n in_o simplicity_n first_o of_o all_o take_v it_o for_o a_o rule_n though_o many_o think_v it_o no_o great_a matter_n to_o be_v a_o dissembler_n our_o nature_n be_v full_a of_o dissimulation_n since_o the_o fall_n the_o heart_n of_o dissemble_v man_n be_v unsearchable_a there_o be_v deep_a deceit_n in_o man_n take_v a_o child_n and_o see_v what_o dissimulation_n he_o learn_v it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o first_o thing_n he_o learn_v to_o dissemble_v to_o double_a to_o be_v false_a we_o see_v the_o weak_a creature_n what_o shift_n what_o wind_a and_o turn_n they_o have_v to_o save_v themselves_o it_o be_v a_o virtue_n to_o be_v downright_o for_o therein_o a_o man_n must_v cross_v himself_o it_o be_v no_o thanks_o for_o a_o man_n to_o shuffle_v and_o to_o shift_v in_o the_o world_n nature_n teach_v this_o to_o dissemble_v to_o turn_v and_o wind_n etc._n etc._n a_o man_n need_v not_o to_o plough_v to_o have_v weed_n the_o ground_n itself_o be_v a_o mother_n to_o they_o though_o it_o be_v a_o stepmother_n simile_n to_o good_a seed_n so_o we_o need_v not_o teach_v man_n to_o dissemble_v every_o man_n have_v it_o by_o nature_n but_o it_o must_v be_v strength_n of_o grace_n that_o make_v a_o man_n downright_o take_v that_o for_o a_o ground_n there_o be_v a_o company_n of_o sottish_a man_n that_o take_v it_o for_o a_o great_a commendation_n to_o dissemble_v and_o rather_o than_o they_o will_v be_v know_v not_o to_o dissemble_v in_o business_n they_o will_v puzzle_v clear_a business_n when_o a_o thing_n be_v fair_a and_o clear_a they_o will_v have_v project_n beyond_o the_o moon_n and_o so_o carry_v themselves_o in_o it_o as_o if_o they_o desire_v to_o be_v account_v couzener_n and_o dissembler_n alas_o poor_a soul_n nature_n teach_v man_n to_o be_v naught_o in_o this_o kind_n well_o enough_o know_v therefore_o whosoever_o thou_o be_v that_o study_v this_o art_n of_o dissemble_v and_o double_v thy_o own_o nature_n be_v prone_a enough_o to_o double_a with_o the_o world_n though_o he_o make_v a_o fair_a show_n yet_o ere_o long_o thou_o shall_v meet_v with_o that_o that_o will_v deal_v simple_o with_o thou_o that_o will_v deal_v plain_a that_o he_o have_v deceive_v the_o world_n and_o deceive_v himself_o and_o labour_v to_o deceive_v god_n also_o if_o we_o will_v have_v comfort_n in_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n labour_v we_o to_o deal_v plain_o and_o direct_o and_o of_o all_o other_o sin_n as_o i_o say_v before_o remember_v this_o be_v that_o which_o will_v lie_v the_o heavy_a on_o we_o as_o come_v near_a the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o what_o be_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o man_n rush_v against_o their_o knowledge_n in_o malice_n to_o the_o truth_n know_v where_o there_o be_v most_o knowledge_n and_o most_o will_n there_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n now_o in_o lie_v and_o dissemble_v and_o double-dealing_a a_o man_n come_v near_o to_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o double-dealing_a and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v avoid_v it_o the_o better_a labour_n for_o faith_n to_o live_v faith_n by_o faith_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n live_v by_o shift_n and_o by_o double_v in_o the_o world_n they_o have_v not_o faith_n to_o depend_v upon_o god_n in_o good_a and_o plain_a downright_a course_n man_n be_v ready_a to_o say_v if_o i_o shall_v not_o dissemble_v and_o double_a and_o carry_v thing_n after_o that_o manner_n who_o shall_v i_o live_v why_o where_o be_v thy_o faith_n the_o righteous_a man_n live_v by_o his_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o his_o shift_n not_o by_o his_o wit_n god_n will_v provide_v for_o we_o be_v we_o not_o in_o covenant_n with_o god_n do_v we_o not_o profess_v to_o be_v god_n child_n do_v child_n use_v to_o shift_v no_o a_o child_n go_v about_o to_o do_v his_o father_n will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o he_o know_v that_o he_o will_v maintain_v he_o it_o be_v against_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n as_o far_o as_o he_o know_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o child_n of_o god_n to_o use_v any_o indirect_a course_n any_o wind_n and_o turn_n in_o his_o call_n let_v we_o depend_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o child_n depend_v on_o his_o father_n and_o of_o all_o other_o god_n will_v provide_v most_o for_o they_o that_o in_o simple_a honesty_n in_o plain_a downright_a deal_n depend_v on_o he_o in_o do_v good_a for_o god_n account_v it_o a_o prerogative_n to_o defend_v and_o maintain_v they_o that_o cast_v themselves_o on_o he_o he_o will_v be_v their_o wisdom_n that_o can_v deny_v their_o own_o wisdom_n and_o their_o own_o shift_n by_o nature_n and_o in_o conscience_n labour_n to_o deal_v direct_o he_o will_v be_v wise_a for_o they_o and_o provide_v for_o they_o it_o be_v his_o prerogative_n to_o do_v so_o and_o not_o to_o suffer_v his_o child_n to_o be_v desert_v a_o little_a faith_n therefore_o will_v help_v all_o this_o and_o will_v make_v we_o walk_v in_o simplicity_n if_o we_o can_v than_o it_o be_v malicious_a devilish_a wisdom_n and_o note_v this_o by_o the_o way_n all_o man_n that_o have_v flesh_n in_o they_o have_v wisdom_n not_o fleshly_a wisdom_n for_o some_o be_v carry_v with_o the_o flesh_n with_o the_o rage_n of_o fleshly_a lust_n as_o the_o swine_n in_o the_o gospel_n be_v carry_v headlong_o into_o the_o sea_n they_o be_v carry_v by_o their_o lust_n to_o hell_n as_o your_o common_a swaggerer_n and_o roarer_n that_o so_o they_o may_v escape_v the_o danger_n of_o the_o law_n they_o care_v not_o for_o god_n nor_o man_n irregular_a wild_a person_n these_o have_v flesh_n they_o be_v rule_v by_o the_o flesh_n but_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o fleshly_a wisdom_n for_o they_o take_v course_n to_o overthrow_v themselves_o in_o the_o world_n to_o overthrow_v their_o name_n and_o their_o body_n and_o all_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o policy_n in_o they_o their_o lust_n so_o reign_v in_o they_o such_o wretch_n we_o have_v ofttimes_o among_o we_o that_o think_v themselves_o some_o body_n but_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o carnal_a wisdom_n in_o they_o to_o carry_v themselves_o better_a than_o a_o devil_n now_o in_o other_o man_n the_o flesh_n have_v a_o wisdom_n that_o carry_v they_o not_o after_o this_o fashion_n but_o it_o whet_v their_o wit_n and_o they_o be_v as_o bad_a in_o another_o kind_n as_o take_v the_o same_o man_n when_o he_o be_v young_a he_o be_v carry_v by_o his_o brutish_a lust_n without_o any_o wisdom_n at_o all_o even_o as_o the_o hurry_n of_o his_o lust_n carry_v he_o and_o transport_v he_o when_o be_v in_o all_o part_n and_o it_o mingle_v itself_o with_o all_o grace_n in_o the_o understanding_n there_o be_v light_a and_o darkness_n in_o the_o will_v there_o be_v rebellion_n and_o he_o express_v he_o himself_o rom._n 7._o as_o he_o have_v a_o conflict_n in_o himself_o in_o other_o regard_v so_o there_o be_v a_o conflict_n between_o wisdom_n and_o wisdom_n the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n do_v stir_v against_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o spirit_n i_o but_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o have_v fleshly_a wisdom_n in_o we_o and_o it_o be_v another_o thing_n to_o make_v it_o our_o rule_n it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o have_v flesh_n in_o we_o and_o another_o thing_n to_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n as_o the_o scripture-phrase_n be_v this_o conflict_n wondrous_o afflict_v establishment_n we_o can_v firm_o cleave_v to_o that_o with_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n which_o we_o do_v not_o clear_o apprehend_v with_o our_o understanding_n when_o we_o have_v a_o clear_a that_o the_o soul_n have_v that_o we_o call_v believe_v believe_v which_o be_v mere_o upon_o the_o credit_n of_o he_o that_o speak_v though_o we_o know_v no_o reason_n why_o the_o thing_n shall_v be_v so_o but_o only_o the_o person_n it_o may_v be_v be_v a_o person_n of_o credit_n and_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o thereafter_o as_o we_o conceive_v well_o of_o he_o thereafter_o we_o fasten_v
