humiliation_n inward_a in_o the_o judgement_n affection_n outward_a in_o our_o carriage_n to_o god_n man._n invocation_n reformation_n sin_n to_o come_v wisdom_n in_o prevention_n special_a which_o be_v thankfulness_n compassion_n preparation_n for_o death_n desire_v of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v increase_v grace_n renew_v the_o school_n of_o affliction_n psal._n 94._o 12._o bless_a be_v the_o man_n who_o thou_o chastize_v o_o lord_n and_o teach_v in_o thy_o law_n after_o that_o the_o prophet_n have_v prefer_v his_o complaint_n to_o the_o lord_n against_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o church_n from_o the_o first_o verse_n to_o the_o eight_o he_o leave_v god_n and_o in_o a_o sudden_a conversion_n of_o speech_n turn_v himself_o from_o the_o party_n complain_v unto_o to_o the_o party_n complain_v of_o the_o cruel_a oppressor_n of_o the_o church_n terrify_v they_o by_o those_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n which_o in_o fine_a must_v overtake_v they_o and_o so_o consequent_o cheer_v and_o comfort_v the_o distress_a church_n but_o because_o the_o distress_n of_o the_o church_n enemy_n of_o itself_o can_v be_v no_o sufficient_a matter_n of_o comfort_n unto_o she_o therefore_o a_o second_o argument_n of_o further_a and_o that_o far_o more_o effectual_a consolation_n be_v add_v in_o this_o twelve_o verse_n draw_v from_o the_o happy_a condition_n of_o the_o church_n even_o while_o she_o be_v thus_o overbear_v with_o these_o tygerly_a and_o tyrannical_a persecutor_n and_o the_o argument_n be_v propound_v by_o the_o prophet_n not_o direct_v his_o speech_n to_o the_o church_n but_o rather_o in_o his_o own_o person_n bring_v in_o the_o church_n sudden_o turn_v her_o speech_n from_o her_o enemy_n with_o who_o she_o be_v expostulate_v to_o god_n himself_o and_o break_v forth_o into_o this_o pathetical_a exclamation_n bless_a be_v the_o man_n who_o thou_o chastize_v o_o lord_n and_o teach_v in_o thy_o law_n from_o the_o coherence_n of_o which_o word_n with_o the_o former_a we_o may_v observe_v that_o the_o outward_a misery_n of_o our_o enemy_n be_v but_o doct._n 1_o cold_a comfort_n unless_o withal_o we_o have_v a_o persuasion_n of_o our_o own_o inward_a happiness_n the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n be_v to_o rejoice_v at_o the_o evil_n of_o those_o that_o have_v do_v evil_a to_o they_o comfort_v themselves_o for_o all_o the_o evil_n they_o have_v sustain_v at_o their_o hand_n with_o that_o recompense_n of_o the_o like_a or_o great_a evil_n which_o divine_a justice_n make_v but_o this_o rejoice_v be_v not_o good_a for_o alas_o what_o good_a can_v another_o man_n misery_n do_v we_o when_o our_o own_o conscience_n shall_v tell_v we_o that_o we_o be_v every_o way_n as_o miserable_a ourselves_o it_o will_v do_v the_o child_n little_a good_a to_o see_v the_o rod_n cast_v into_o the_o fire_n if_o he_o himself_o shall_v be_v cast_v in_o after_o it_o therefore_o the_o church_n have_v in_o this_o place_n meditate_a of_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n befall_v her_o adversary_n and_o not_o find_v sufficiency_n of_o comfort_n therein_o here_o in_o this_o verse_n proceed_v to_o a_o further_a meditation_n of_o her_o own_o case_n and_o condition_n wherein_o she_o seem_v thus_o to_o reason_n with_o herself_o what_o though_o these_o my_o enemy_n shall_v at_o length_n be_v bring_v to_o their_o deserve_a end_n what_o though_o i_o know_v they_o be_v reserve_v for_o shame_n and_o confusion_n what_o ease_n can_v this_o bring_v to_o my_o mind_n now_o deject_a and_o cast_v down_o in_o itself_o and_o happy_o think_v itself_o as_o miserable_a as_o these_o my_o foe_n now_o these_o doubtful_a thought_n something_o disquiet_v she_o further_a comfort_n be_v minister_v unto_o she_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o this_o verse_n whereby_o she_o be_v enable_v to_o answer_v that_o objection_n she_o make_v against_o herself_o namely_o that_o she_o be_v assure_v that_o as_o her_o adversary_n case_n be_v wretched_a so_o be_v she_o own_o most_o happy_a and_o bless_a let_v no_o man_n then_o rest_v in_o that_o comfort_n which_o the_o ruin_n of_o he_o and_o god_n enemy_n minister_v unto_o he_o but_o rather_o in_o that_o which_o his_o own_o conscience_n assure_v he_o of_o happiness_n afford_v unto_o he_o that_o so_o to_o use_v the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n gal._n 6._o 4._o though_o in_o something_o a_o diverse_a sense_n he_o may_v have_v rejoice_v in_o himself_o and_o not_o in_o another_o yet_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o great_a comfort_n may_v be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o confusion_n of_o the_o church_n wicked_a enemy_n the_o righteous_a shall_v rejoice_v when_o he_o see_v the_o vengeance_n he_o shall_v wash_v his_o foot_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o wicked_a psal_n 58._o 10._o but_o yet_o this_o joy_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o see_v of_o god_n justice_n execute_v upon_o other_o as_o it_o be_v nothing_o so_o full_a and_o so_o perfect_a as_o that_o which_o proceed_v from_o the_o feel_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o ourselves_o because_o it_o be_v something_o curb_v with_o grief_n in_o see_v the_o destruction_n of_o our_o own_o flesh_n so_o neither_o of_o itself_o without_o this_o latter_a be_v it_o any_o thing_n sound_n or_o sincere_a as_o not_o be_v able_a to_o uphold_v and_o sustain_v the_o weary_a and_o feeble_a knee_n of_o our_o faint_a soul_n therefore_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o eleven_o verse_n of_o that_o former_a psalm_n so_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v say_v very_o there_o be_v a_o reward_n for_o the_o righteous_a very_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o judge_v in_o the_o earth_n the_o righteous_a can_v not_o so_o hearty_o and_o sincere_o rejoice_v if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o reward_n for_o he_o as_o well_o as_o vengeance_n for_o the_o wicked_a again_o it_o be_v worth_a our_o observation_n to_o consider_v doct._n 2_o the_o manner_n wherein_o this_o second_o argument_n of_o comfort_n be_v propound_v the_o prophet_n do_v not_o turn_v his_o speech_n to_o the_o afflict_a church_n and_o speak_v to_o she_o but_o he_o turn_v his_o speech_n to_o the_o lord_n say_v bless_a be_v the_o man_n who_o thou_o chastise_v o_o lord_n what_o may_v be_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o do_v the_o lord_n stand_v in_o need_n of_o his_o comfort_n why_o do_v he_o not_o rather_o direct_v and_o address_v his_o speech_n to_o his_o own_o soul_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o brethren_n and_o fellow_n in_o affliction_n to_o who_o this_o comfort_n belong_v sure_o hereby_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o comfort_n be_v then_o most_o sweet_o and_o sensible_o feel_v and_o apprehend_v when_o we_o lift_v up_o our_o heart_n in_o holy_a meditation_n to_o he_o who_o be_v the_o father_n of_o mercy_n and_o god_n of_o all_o consolation_n otherwise_o though_o argument_n of_o never_o so_o great_a comfort_n offer_v themselves_o unto_o we_o yet_o hardly_o shall_v we_o stay_v and_o quiet_a our_o trouble_a mind_n by_o they_o unless_o in_o think_v on_o they_o we_o do_v withal_o think_v on_o god_n break_v our_o mind_n to_o he_o in_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n and_o familiar_o communicate_v unto_o he_o what_o be_v those_o point_n of_o comfort_n we_o have_v think_v upon_o have_v we_o therefore_o in_o our_o affliction_n furnish_v and_o fortify_v our_o heart_n with_o argument_n of_o consolation_n and_o meditation_n of_o comfort_n out_o of_o the_o word_n let_v we_o pour_v they_o forth_o into_o the_o lord_n bosom_n in_o prayer_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v feel_v the_o sweetness_n of_o they_o indeed_o then_o shall_v we_o find_v our_o former_a comfort_n double_v and_o tripled_a upon_o we_o even_o as_o the_o beam_n of_o the_o sun_n receive_v a_o increase_n of_o heat_n by_o reflection_n it_o be_v the_o lord_n usual_a manner_n in_o this_o holy_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n and_o come_v with_o he_o to_o shed_v abroad_o his_o love_n abundant_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n thereby_o reviue_v and_o raise_v up_o their_o
