for_o deliverance_n or_o comfort_n and_o all_o in_o vain_a it_o be_v usual_o express_v in_o the_o scripture_n by_o this_o phrase_n of_o the_o fail_n of_o the_o eye_n as_o psal_n 69.3_o my_o eye_n fail_v while_o i_o wait_v for_o my_o god_n and_o so_o here_o to_o express_v that_o wicked_a man_n shall_v in_o vain_a expect_v any_o help_n from_o god_n in_o their_o distress_n he_o say_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o wicked_a shall_v fail_v and_o then_o add_v they_o shall_v not_o escape_v and_o their_o hope_n shall_v be_v as_o the_o give_v up_o of_o the_o ghost_n the_o meaning_n whereof_o be_v either_o 1._o that_o after_o all_o their_o expectation_n the_o end_n of_o their_o hope_n shall_v be_v a_o miserable_a death_n or_o that_o they_o shall_v die_v in_o their_o misery_n either_o by_o make_v themselves_o away_o in_o despair_n or_o by_o some_o other_o way_n of_o god_n just_a vengeance_n upon_o they_o or_o 2._o that_o in_o the_o conclusion_n they_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v in_o as_o hopeless_a and_o desperate_a a_o condition_n as_o be_v a_o man_n when_o he_o be_v give_v up_o the_o ghost_n or_o 3._o that_o their_o hope_n shall_v come_v to_o nothing_o even_o as_o the_o breath_n of_o a_o man_n vanish_v to_o nothing_o when_o he_o give_v up_o the_o ghost_n and_o therefore_o indeed_o some_o translate_v this_o clause_n thus_o their_o hope_n shall_v be_v as_o a_o puff_n of_o breath_n now_o the_o main_a drift_n of_o this_o be_v to_o give_v job_n a_o hint_n that_o if_o he_o continue_v in_o his_o wickedness_n and_o do_v not_o repent_v this_o at_o last_o will_v be_v his_o portion_n chap._n xii_o verse_n 2._o no_o doubt_n but_o you_o be_v the_o people_n and_o wisdom_n shall_v die_v with_o you_o because_o zophar_n have_v interrupt_v job_n when_o he_o be_v speak_v charge_v he_o with_o babble_v forth_o a_o multitude_n of_o word_n to_o no_o purpose_n yea_o with_o utter_v many_o lie_n and_o falsehood_n chap._n 11.2_o 3._o and_o have_v in_o effect_n though_o covert_o vers_n 12._o compare_v job_n to_o a_o wild_a ass_n colt_n job_n therefore_o undertake_v here_o to_o reply_v upon_o he_o upbraid_v zophar_n and_o together_o with_o he_o his_o other_o two_o friend_n also_o who_o have_v all_o run_v on_o in_o the_o same_o strain_n with_o the_o high_a conceit_n which_o they_o have_v of_o themselves_o and_o their_o contempt_n of_o other_o and_o this_o he_o see_v the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o interposition_n of_o thick_a cloud_n and_o now_o man_n see_v not_o the_o bright_a light_n which_o be_v in_o the_o cloud_n but_o that_o on_o a_o sudden_a oftentimes_o the_o wind_n come_v and_o scatter_v they_o but_o the_o wind_n pass_v and_o cleanse_v they_o fair_a weather_n come_v out_o of_o the_o north._n from_o all_o which_o at_o last_o he_o lay_v down_o that_o conclusion_n with_o god_n be_v terrible_a majesty_n but_o three_o the_o most_o and_o best_a expositor_n will_v have_v the_o word_n understand_v thus_o to_o wit_n that_o elihu_n here_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v no_o stand_v before_o god_n to_o contend_v against_o he_o by_o a_o argument_n from_o the_o less_o to_o the_o great_a namely_o that_o man_n can_v behold_v the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n when_o the_o wind_n have_v scatter_v the_o cloud_n and_o so_o it_o shine_v clear_o in_o the_o firmament_n and_o much_o less_o can_v they_o stand_v before_o god_n who_o dwell_v in_o light_n inaccessible_a and_o be_v of_o terrible_a majesty_n and_o this_o indeed_o be_v very_o probable_a yet_o the_o second_o exposition_n seem_v best_a to_o agree_v with_o our_o translation_n verse_n 23._o touch_v the_o almighty_a we_o can_v find_v he_o out_o etc._n etc._n as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v and_o from_o all_o this_o that_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v concern_v the_o almighty_a conclude_v that_o we_o can_v find_v he_o out_o he_o be_v altogether_o incomprehensible_a of_o which_o see_v the_o note_n chap._n 11.7_o he_o be_v excellent_a in_o power_n and_o in_o judgement_n and_o in_o plenty_n of_o justice_n he_o will_v not_o afflict_v that_o be_v not_o willing_o till_o man_n by_o their_o sin_n force_v he_o to_o it_o and_o much_o less_o will_v he_o afflict_v they_o causeless_o or_o unjust_o verse_n 24._o man_n do_v therefore_o fear_v he_o etc._n etc._n to_o wit_n because_o he_o be_v of_o such_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a power_n and_o will_v not_o vouchsafe_v to_o mind_v such_o a_o worm_n as_o man_n be_v so_o infinite_o beneath_o he_o no_o not_o those_o that_o be_v wise_a of_o heart_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v not_o those_o that_o out_o of_o a_o overween_a conceit_n of_o their_o own_o wisdom_n think_v they_o can_v maintain_v their_o cause_n against_o god_n or_o because_o god_n be_v able_a to_o punish_v they_o and_o will_v punish_v they_o if_o they_o be_v too_o peremptory_a with_o he_o be_v they_o never_o so_o wise_a of_o heart_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a thereby_o to_o rescue_v themselves_o out_o of_o his_o hand_n he_o will_v neither_o fear_v nor_o regard_v their_o wisdom_n or_o else_o to_o show_v why_o man_n ought_v to_o fear_n god_n for_o his_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n and_o not_o to_o murmur_v friend_n by_o approve_v job_n and_o reprove_v they_o only_o the_o lord_n find_v that_o though_o job_n be_v much_o convince_v by_o that_o which_o elihu_n have_v speak_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o be_v all_o the_o while_o silent_a yet_o he_o be_v not_o sufficient_o humble_v before_o he_o will_v give_v sentence_n for_o job_n he_o first_o check_v he_o for_o those_o thing_n he_o have_v cloud_n wherein_o there_o come_v a_o whirlwind_n it_o seem_v that_o first_o there_o appear_v a_o cloud_n out_o of_o which_o when_o the_o whirlwind_n have_v break_v out_o with_o some_o terror_n then_o after_o that_o the_o lord_n speak_v to_o job_n out_o of_o that_o stormy_a cloud_n which_o be_v to_o humble_v he_o and_o to_o make_v both_o he_o and_o the_o rest_n the_o more_o attentive_a to_o what_o he_o shall_v say_v see_v the_o note_n 1_o king_n 19.11_o yet_o he_o speak_v to_o he_o with_o much_o gentleness_n whereas_o his_o three_o friend_n condemn_v he_o for_o a_o wicked_a hypocrite_n and_o elihu_n though_o he_o acknowledge_v his_o sincerity_n and_o only_o blame_v he_o for_o his_o inconsiderate_a speech_n yet_o he_o have_v therein_o use_v some_o very_a bitter_a expression_n as_o in_o chap._n 34.7_o 8._o what_o man_n be_v like_o job_n who_o drink_v scorn_v like_o water_n which_o walk_v in_o company_n with_o the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n etc._n etc._n in_o god_n answer_n to_o he_o there_o be_v no_o such_o bitterness_n at_o all_o verse_n 2._o who_o be_v this_o that_o darkness_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n many_o expositor_n hold_v that_o these_o word_n be_v speak_v to_o elihu_n for_o they_o say_v that_o the_o lord_n undertake_v to_o answer_n job_n as_o be_v say_v in_o the_o forego_n verse_n do_v first_o check_n elihu_n and_o take_v he_o off_o from_o proceed_v any_o far_o and_o that_o he_o be_v charge_v with_o darken_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n either_o because_o he_o do_v not_o sufficient_o set_v forth_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n work_n or_o because_o he_o do_v not_o clear_o enough_o express_v his_o own_o meaning_n in_o the_o argument_n he_o bring_v to_o convince_v job_n or_o because_o though_o he_o speak_v truth_n yet_o he_o utter_v it_o not_o in_o a_o manner_n suitable_a to_o job_n condition_n but_o with_o such_o sharpness_n as_o be_v likely_a to_o add_v to_o his_o affliction_n rather_o than_o to_o afford_v he_o any_o comfort_n and_o indeed_o 2_o reason_n they_o give_v why_o this_o shall_v be_v speak_v to_o elihu_n rather_o than_o to_o job_n which_o have_v much_o probability_n in_o they_o first_o because_o these_o word_n who_o be_v this_o that_o darkness_n counsel_n etc._n etc._n seem_v rather_o to_o intend_v one_o that_o be_v then_o speak_v as_o elihu_n be_v rather_o than_o job_n that_o have_v not_o speak_v of_o a_o long_a time_n together_o and_o 2_o because_o god_n do_v no_o where_o reprove_v elihu_n as_o he_o do_v job_n ch_z 40.2_o &_o his_o other_o three_o friend_n ch_z 42.7_o and_o see_v elihu_n have_v deal_v somewhat_o too_o tart_o with_o job_n also_o and_o have_v very_o much_o misinterpret_v some_o thing_n that_o job_n have_v speak_v it_o be_v strange_a that_o he_o only_o shall_v pass_v unreproved_a but_o methinks_v it_o be_v far_o more_o probable_a that_o these_o word_n be_v speak_v to_o job_n first_o because_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o forego_n verse_n that_o then_o the_o lord_n answer_v job_n out_o of_o the_o whirlwind_n and_o say_v and_o then_o immediate_o this_o be_v add_v as_o his_o answer_n to_o job_n who_o be_v this_o that_o darkness_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n gird_v up_o now_o thy_o loin_n like_o a_o man_n etc._n etc._n second_o because_o chap._n 42.3_o job_n do_v afterward_o repeat_v these_o word_n as_o acknowledge_v himself_o therewith_o just_o check_v who_o be_v he_o that_o hide_v counsel_n
without_o knowledge_n therefore_o have_v i_o utter_v that_o i_o understand_v not_o etc._n etc._n &_o three_o because_o it_o be_v very_o hard_a to_o show_v why_o elihu_n shall_v be_v charge_v with_o darken_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n see_v the_o lord_n here_o plead_v with_o job_n after_o the_o same_o manner_n and_o urge_v the_o very_a same_o or_o the_o like_a work_n of_o god_n as_o elihu_n have_v do_v whereas_o now_o we_o may_v easy_o conceive_v that_o job_n may_v well_o be_v charge_v with_o darken_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n whether_o we_o understand_v it_o of_o his_o own_o counsel_n or_o go_n for_o first_o he_o have_v darken_v his_o own_o counsel_n in_o that_o he_o have_v not_o clear_o enough_o express_v his_o meaning_n but_o in_o his_o passion_n have_v express_v himself_o so_o simple_o and_o foolish_o that_o his_o word_n seem_v to_o import_v worse_o than_o he_o think_v to_o wit_n that_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n at_o all_o in_o god_n deal_v with_o his_o faithful_a servant_n and_o with_o wicked_a ungodly_a man_n and_o that_o god_n have_v not_o deal_v just_o with_o he_o and_o second_o he_o have_v darken_v god_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n in_o that_o he_o have_v seem_v to_o imply_v for_o want_v of_o express_v himself_o full_o and_o plain_o that_o god_n have_v deal_v with_o he_o as_o a_o enemy_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o love_n in_o the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o righteous_a than_o the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o wicked_a nor_o no_o more_o wrath_n in_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o wicked_a then_o in_o the_o affliction_n of_o the_o righteous_a so_o that_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o here_o charge_v job_n with_o speak_v that_o which_o be_v false_a but_o with_o utter_v the_o truth_n unskilful_o who_o be_v this_o that_o darkness_n counsel_n by_o word_n without_o knowledge_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v what_o do_v i_o hear_v be_v this_o you_o job_n that_o talk_v thus_o foolish_o and_o pettish_o as_o if_o you_o mean_v to_o charge_v i_o with_o injustice_n whatever_o other_o may_v have_v do_v i_o expect_v better_a word_n from_o you_o verse_n 3._o i_o will_v demand_v of_o thou_o and_o answer_v thou_o i_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v speak_v with_o reference_n to_o that_o proud_a challenge_n of_o job_n chap._n 13.22_o call_v thou_o and_o i_o will_v answer_v or_o let_v i_o speak_v and_o answer_v thou_o i_o wherein_o he_o give_v god_n the_o choice_n either_o to_o object_n against_o job_n and_o then_o he_o will_v answer_v or_o to_o answer_v what_o job_n shall_v object_v against_o he_o and_o according_o therefore_o the_o lord_n here_o put_v job_n to_o answer_v to_o certain_a question_n that_o he_o propound_v to_o he_o the_o drift_n whereof_o be_v to_o give_v job_n to_o understand_v that_o if_o he_o can_v not_o give_v a_o full_a and_o clear_a account_n of_o these_o ordinary_a work_n much_o less_o be_v he_o like_a to_o know_v his_o secret_a counsel_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o arrogance_n to_o charge_v he_o with_o injustice_n who_o work_n he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o comprehend_v and_o who_o be_v of_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o power_n must_v be_v since_o you_o think_v your_o understanding_n so_o great_a that_o you_o can_v dispute_v with_o i_o and_o blame_v the_o dispensation_n of_o my_o providence_n show_v i_o i_o pray_v how_o this_o be_v whereto_o the_o lord_n here_o demand_v of_o job_n who_o lay_v the_o corner_n stone_n of_o the_o earth_n intimate_v that_o sure_o he_o do_v not_o contribute_v either_o counsel_n or_o assistance_n therein_o but_o that_o the_o lord_n alone_o do_v it_o with_o who_o therefore_o he_o may_v see_v that_o he_o be_v no_o way_n fit_a to_o contend_v some_o conceive_v that_o it_o be_v of_o old_a a_o sing_v together_o because_o be_v of_o different_a magnitude_n and_o have_v different_a motion_n and_o influence_n they_o do_v yet_o as_o it_o be_v harmonious_o join_v together_o in_o sound_v forth_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n as_o in_o a_o consort_n of_o different_a voice_n sing_v together_o in_o that_o they_o do_v show_v forth_o the_o infinite_a power_n and_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o either_o because_o those_o star_n that_o shine_v in_o the_o morning_n be_v by_o a_o synecdoche_n put_v for_o all_o the_o star_n in_o general_a or_o because_o from_o the_o first_o morning_n of_o time_n in_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n they_o sing_v forth_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n whence_o some_o will_v have_v the_o similitude_n to_o be_v take_v from_o the_o sing_n of_o bird_n at_o the_o first_o break_v of_o day_n and_o whereas_o against_o this_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o the_o star_n be_v not_o create_v till_o the_o four_o day_n gen._n 1.14_o and_o therefore_o can_v not_o praise_v god_n when_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o earth_n be_v lay_v to_o this_o they_o answer_v first_o that_o no_o more_o be_v here_o intend_a but_o that_o they_o praise_v god_n even_o at_o the_o creation_n and_o 2_o that_o the_o star_n be_v create_v the_o first_o day_n together_o with_o the_o heaven_n &_o light_n only_o their_o light_n be_v not_o then_o such_o as_o it_o be_v afterward_o make_v to_o be_v on_o the_o four_o day_n but_o then_o again_o other_o hold_v that_o both_o clause_n do_v here_o express_v the_o same_o thing_n to_o wit_n that_o the_o angel_n who_o be_v therefore_o create_v the_o first_o day_n together_o with_o the_o high_a heaven_n of_o which_o see_v the_o note_n gen._n 1.1_o do_v sing_v forth_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n when_o they_o see_v the_o foundation_n lay_v of_o this_o glorious_a fabric_n of_o the_o world_n for_o say_v they_o as_o they_o be_v the_o angel_n that_o be_v call_v the_o son_n of_o god_n in_o the_o second_o clause_n wherein_o all_o that_o even_o those_o angel_n that_o afterward_o fall_v away_o do_v then_o at_o first_o praise_n god_n together_o with_o the_o rest_n so_o they_o be_v the_o angel_n also_o that_o be_v call_v in_o the_o first_o clause_n the_o morning_n star_n both_o because_o they_o be_v the_o first_o and_o best_a of_o all_o god_n creature_n and_o particular_o because_o of_o their_o exceed_a glory_n and_o brightness_n as_o in_o allusion_n to_o the_o bright_a of_o all_o the_o star_n the_o morning_n star_n for_o which_o cause_n also_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o holy_a angel_n 2_o cor._n 11.14_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o indeed_o this_o i_o conceive_v to_o be_v far_o most_o probable_a because_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v clear_a that_o the_o star_n be_v not_o create_v till_o the_o four_o day_n whereas_o the_o lord_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o shout_n and_o sing_v that_o be_v on_o the_o first_o day_n when_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o earth_n be_v lay_v as_o be_v the_o more_o evident_a in_o the_o follow_a verse_n
punish_v they_o he_o appear_v then_o as_o a_o enemy_n rather_o than_o a_o father_n and_o so_o that_o may_v be_v call_v his_o strange_a work_n as_o it_o be_v isa_n 28.21_o but_o when_o he_o do_v they_o good_a that_o be_v his_o own_o proper_a work_n and_o hence_o say_v some_o be_v this_o expression_n let_v thy_o work_n appear_v unto_o thy_o servant_n and_o thy_o glory_n unto_o their_o child_n that_o be_v glorify_v thyself_o by_o the_o greatness_n of_o thy_o mercy_n to_o they_o and_o the_o great_a and_o glorious_a work_n thou_o shall_v do_v for_o they_o and_o this_o also_o may_v be_v mean_v make_v this_o only_a to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o last_o clause_n that_o the_o foolishness_n of_o fool_n that_o be_v of_o wicked_a man_n be_v folly_n that_o be_v folly_n indeed_o there_o be_v no_o folly_n like_a unto_o that_o folly_n verse_n 25._o a_o true_a witness_n deliver_v soul_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v by_o testify_v the_o truth_n he_o often_o deliver_v many_o innocent_a man_n
