LXI 1 The office of Christ 4 The forwardness 7 and blessings of the faithful THE * Luke 4.18 spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek he hath sent me to blinde up the broken-hearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to them hat are bound 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD and the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all that mourn 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion to give unto them beauty for ashes the oyl of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that they might be called trees of righteousness the planting of the LORD that he might be glorified 4 ¶ And they shall * Chap. 58.12 build the old wastes they shall raise up the former desolations and they shall repart the waste cities the desolations of many generations 5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks and the sons of the alien shall be your plowman and your vine-dressers 6 But ye shall be named the priests of the LORD men shall call you the ministers of our God * Chap. 60.6 ye

XI 1 Jeremiah proclaimeth Gods covenant 8 rebuketh the Jews disobeying thereof 11 prophesieth evils to come upon them 18 and upon the men of Anathoth for conspiring to kill Jeremiah THe word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Hear ye the words of this covenant and speak unto the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem 3 And say thou unto them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel * Deut. 27.26 Gal. 3.10 Curled be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant 4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt from the iron furnace saying * Lev. 26.3 12. third the face of a lion and the fourth the face of an eagle 15 And the cherubims were lifted up this is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar 16 And when the cherubims went the wheels went by them and when the cherubims lift up their wings to mount up from the earth the same wheels also turned not from beside them 17 When they stood these stood and when they were lifted up these lift up themselves also for the spirit of the living creature was in them 18 Then the glory of the LORD departed from off the threshold of the house and stood over the cherubims 19 And the cherubims lift up their wings and mounted up from the earth in my sight when they went out the wheels also were besides them and every one stood at the door of the east-east-gate of the LORDs house and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above 20 This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Ch●bar and I knew that they were the cherubims 21 Every one had four faces apiece and every one four wings and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings 22 And the likeness of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the river of Chebar their appearances and themselves they went every one straight forward CHAP. XI 1 The presumption of the princes 4 Their sin and judgement 13 Ezekiel complaining God sheweth him his purpose in saving a remnant 21 and punishing the wicked 22 The glory of God leaveth the city 24 Ezekiel is returned to the captivity MOreover the spirit lift me up and brought me unto the east-gate of the LORDs house which looketh east-ward and behold at the door of the gate five and twenty men among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azur and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah princes of the people 2 Then said he unto me Son of man these are the men that devise mischief and give wicked counsel in this city 3 Which say ‖ Or It is not for us to build sauses near It is not * 2 Pet. 3.4 near let us build houses this city is the caldron and we be the flesh 4 ¶ Therefore prophesie against them prophesie O son of man 5 And the spirit of the LORD fell upon me and said unto me Speak Thus saith the LORD Thus have ye said O house of Israel for I know the things that come into your minde every one of them 6 Ye have multiplied your slain in this city and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain 7 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it they are the flesh and this city is the caldron but I will bring you forth out of the midst of it 8 Ye have feared the sword and I will bring a sword upon you saith the Lord GOD. 9 And I will bring you out of the midst thereof and deliver you into the hands of strangers and will execute judgements among you 10 Ye shall fall by the sword I will judge you in the border of Israel and ye shall know that I am the LORD 11 This city shall not be your caldron neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof but I will judge you in the border of Israel 12 And ye shall know that I am the LORD ‖ Or ●●ick have ●ot walked for ye have not walked in my statutes neither executed my judgements but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you 13 ¶ And it came to pass when l prophesied that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died then fell I down upon my face and cried with a loud voice and said Ah Lord GOD wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel 14 Again the word of the LORD came unto me saying 15 Son of man thy brethren even thy brethren the men of thy kindred and all the house of Israel wholly are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said Get ye far from the LORD unto us is this land given in possession 16 Therefore say Thus saith the Lord GOD Although I have cast them far off among the heathen and although I have scattered them among the countreys yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countreys where they shall come 17 Therefore say Thus saith the Lord GOD I will even gather you from the people and assemble you out of the countreys where ye have been scattered and I will give you the land of Israel 18 And they shall come thither and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence 19 And * Jer. 22.29 Chr. 36.26 I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within you and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and will give them an heart of flesh 20 That they may walk in my statutes and keep mine ordinances and do them and they shall be my people and I will be their God 21 But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations I will recompense their way upon their own heads saith the Lord GOD. 22 ¶ Then did the cherubims lift up their wings and the wheels besides them and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above 23 And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city and stood upon the mountain which is on the east-side of the city 24 ¶ Afterwards the spirit took me up and brought me in vision by the spirit of God into Caldea to them of the captivity so the vision that I had seen went up from me 25 Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that the LORD had shewed me CHAP. XII 1 The type of Ezekiels removing 8 It shewed the captivity of Zedekiah 17 Ezekiels trembling sheweth the Jews desolation 21 The Jews presumptuous proverb is reproved 26 The speediness of the vision THe word of the LORD also came unto me saying 2 Son of man thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house which have eyes to see and see not they have ears to hear and hear not for they are a rebellions house 3 Therefore thou son of man prepare thee ‖ Or instruments stuff for removing and remove by day in their sight and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight it may be they will consider though they be a rebellious house 4 Then shalt thou bring forth thy stuff by day in their sight as stuff for removing and thou shalt go forth at even in their sight † Heb. as the ●●ings fe●th of captivity as they that go forth into captivity 5 † Heb. Dig for thee Dig thou through the wall in their sight and carry out thereby 6 In their sight shalt thou hear
cieled with wood round about ‖ Or and the ground unto the windows and from the ground up to the windows and the windows were covered 17 To that above the door even unto the inner house and without and by all the wall round about within and without by † Heb. measures measure 18 And it was made with cherubims and palm-trees so that a palm-tree was between a cherub and a cherub and every cherub had two faces 19 So that the face of a man was toward the palm-tree on the one side and the face of a young lion toward the palm-tree on the other side it was made through all the house round about 20 From the ground unto above the door were cherubims and palm-trees made and on the wall of the temple 21 The † Heb. post posts of the temple were squared and the face of the sanctuary the appearance of the one as the appearance of the other 22 The altar of wood was three cubits high and the length thereof two cubits and the corners thereof and the length thereof and the walls thereof were of wood and he said unto me This is the table that is before the LORD 23 And the temple and the sanctuary had two doors 24 And the doors had two leaves apiece two turning leaves two leaves for the one door and two leaves for the other door 25 And there were made on them on the doors of the temple cherubims and palm-trees like as were made upon the walls and there were thick planks upon the face of the porch without 26 And there were narrow windows and palm-trees on the one side and on the other side on the sides of the porch and upon the side-chambers of the house and thick planks CHAP. XLII 1 The chambers for the priests 13 The use thereof 19 The measures of the outward court THen he brought me forth into the utter court the way toward the north and he brought me into the chamber that was over against the separate place and which was before the building toward the north 2 Before the length of an hundred cubits was the north-door and the breadth was fifty cubits 3 Over against the twenty cubits which were for the inner court and over against the pavement which was for the utter court was gallery against gallery in three stories 4 And before the chambers was a walk of ten cubits breadth inward a way of one cubit and their doors toward the north 5 Now the upper chambers were shorter for the galleries ‖ Or did eat or these were higher th●n these ‖ Or and the building consisted of the lower and the middlemost then the lower and then the middlemost of the building 6 For they were in three stories but had not pillars as the pillars of the courts therefore the building was straitened more th●n the lowest and the middlemost from the ground 7 And the wall that was without over against the chambers towards the utter court on the forepart of the chambers the length thereof was fifty cubits 8 For the length of the chambers that were in the utter court was fifty cubits and so before the temple were an hundred cubits 9 And ‖ Or from the place from under these chambers was ‖ Or he that brought me the entry on the east-side ‖ Or as be came as one goeth into them from the utter court 10 The chambers were in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east over against the separate place and over against the building 11 And the way before them was like the appearance of the chambers which were toward the north as long as they 〈◊〉 as broad as they and all their goings out were both according to their fashions and according to their doors 12 And according to the doors of the chambers that were toward the south was a door in the head of the way even the way directly before the wall toward the east as one entreth into them 13 ¶ Then said he unto me The north-chambers and the south-chambers which are before the separate place they be holy chambers where the priests that approach unto the LORD shall eat the most holy things there shall they say the most holy things and the meat-offering and the sin-offering and the trespass-offering for the place is holy 14 When the priests enter therein then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister for the are holy and shall put on other garments and shall approach to chose things which are for the people 15 Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house he brought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east and measured it round about 16 He measured the east † Heb. wind side with the measuring-reed five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed round about 17 He measured the north-side five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed round about 18 He measured the south-side five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed 19 ¶ He turned about to the west-side and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed 20 He measured it by the four sides it had a wall round about five hundred reeds long and five hundred broad to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place CHAP. XLIII 1 The returning of the glory of God into the temple 7 The sin of Israel hindred Gods presence 10 The prophet exhorteth them to repentance and observation of the law of the house 13 The measures 18 and the ordinance● of the altar AFterward he brought me to the gate even the gate that looketh toward the east 2 And behold the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east and * Ch. 1.24 his voice was like a noise of many waters and the earth shined with his glory 3 And it was * Ch. 1.4 8.4 according to the appearance of the vision which I saw even according to the vision that I saw ‖ Or when I came to prophesie that the city sro●l● be destroyed See Ch. 9. ● 5. when I came to destroy the city and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar and I tell upon my face 4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east 5 So the spirit took me up and brought me into the inner court and behold the glory of the LORD filled the house 6 And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house and the man stood by me 7 ¶ And he said unto me Son of man the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever and my holy name shall the house of Israel no more desile neither they nor their kings by their whoredom nor by the
carcases of their kings in their high places 8 In their setting of their threshold by my thresholds and their post by my posts ‖ Or for there was out 〈◊〉 wall between me and them and the wall between me and them they have even defiled my holy name by their abominations that they have connuitted wherefore I have consumed them in mine anger 9 Now let them put away their whoredom and the carcases of their kings far from me and I will dweil in the midst of them for ever 10 ¶ Thou son of man shew the house to the house of Israel that they may be ashamed of their iniquities and let them measure the ‖ Or sum or number pattern 11 And if they be ashamed of all that they have done shew them the form of the house and the fashion thereof and the goings out thereof and the comings in thereof and all the forms thereof and all the ordinances thereof and all the forms thereof and all the laws thereof and write it in their right that they may keep the whole form thereof and all the ordinances thereof and do them 12 This is the law of the house Upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy behold this is the law of the house 13 ¶ And these are the measures of the altar after the cubits the cubit is a cubit and an hand-breadth even the † Heb. before bottow shall be a cubit and the breadth a cubit and the border thereof by the † Heb lip edge thereof round about shall be a spar and this shall be the higher place of the altar 14 And from the bottom upon the ground even to the lower settle shall be two cubits and the breadth one cubit and from the lesser settle even to the greater settle shall be four cubits and the breadth one cubit 15 So † Heb. Harel that is the mountain of God the altar shall be four cubits and from † Heb. Ar●el that is the lion of God the altar and upward shall be four horns 16 And the altar shall be twelve cubits long twelve broad square in the four squares thereof 17 And the settle shall be fourteen cubits long and fourteen broad in the four squares thereof and the border about it shall be half a cubit and the bottom thereof shall be a cubit about and his stairs shall look toward the east 18 ¶ And he said unto me Son of man thus saith the Lord GOD These are the ordinances of the altar in the day when they shall make it to offer burnt-offerings thereon and to sprinkle bloud thereon 19 And thou shalt give to the priests the Levites that be of the seed of Zadok which approach unto me to minister unto me saith the Lord GOD a young bullook for a sin-offering 20 And thou shalt take of the bloud thereof and put it on the four horns of it and on the four corners of the settle and upon the border round about thus shalt thou cleanse and purge it 21 Thou shalt take the bullock also of the sin-offering and he shall burn it in the appointed place of the house without the sanctuary 22 And on the second day thou shalt offer a kid of the goats without blemish for a sin-offering and they shall cleanse the altar as they did cleanse it with the bullock 23 When thou hast made an end of cleansing it thou shalt offer a young bullock without blemish and a ram out of the flock without blemish 24 And thou shalt offer them before the LORD and the priests shall cast salt upon them and they shall offer them up for a burnt-offering unto the LORD 25 Seven days shalt thou prepare every day a goat for a sin-offering they shall also prepare a young bullock and a ram out of the flock without blemish 26 Seven days shall they purge the altar and purisie it and they shall † Heb. fill ther● b●nas consecrate themselves 27 And when these days are expired it shall be that upon the eighth day and so forward the priests shall make your burnt-offerings upon the altar and your ‖ Or thank-offerings peace-offerings and I will accept you saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XLIV 1 The east cate assigned onely to the prince 4 The priests reproved for polluting of the sanctuary 9 I dolaters un●apable of the priests office 15 The sons of Zadok are accepted thereto 17 Ordinances for the priests THen he brought me back the way of the gate of the outward sanctuary which looketh toward the east and it was shut 2 Then said the LORD unto me This gate shall be shut it shall not be opened and no man shall enter in by it because the LORD the God of Israel hath entred in by it therefore it shall be shut 3 It is for the prince the prince he shall sit in it to eat bread before the LORD he shall enter by the way of the porch of that gate and shall go out by the way of the same 4 ¶ Then brought he me the way of the north-north-gate before the house and I looked and behold the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD and I sell upon my face 5 And the LORD said unto me Son of man † Heb. set thine bea rt mark well and behold with thine eyes and hear with thine ears all that I say unto thee concerning all the ordinances of the house of the LORD and all the laws thereof and mark well the entring in of the house with every going forth of the sanctuary 6 And thou shalt say to the rebellious even to the house of Israel Thus saith the Lord GOD O ye house of Israel let it suffice you of all your abominations 7 In that ye have brought into my sanctuary † Heb. children of a stranges strangers uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh to be in my sanctuary to pollute it even my house when ye offer my bread the fat and the bloud and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations 8 And ye have not kept the charge of mine holy things but ye have set keepers of my ‖ Or ward or ordinance and so ver 14 and 16. charge in my sanctuary for your selves 9 ¶ Thus saith the Lord GOD No stranger uncircumcised in heart nor uncircumcised in flesh shall enter into my sanctuary of any stranger that is among the children of Israel 10 And the Levites that are gone away far from me when Israel went astray which went astray away from me after their idols they shall even bear their inquity 11 Yet they shall be ministers in my sanctuary having charge at the gates of the house and ministring to the house they shall slay the burnt-offering and the sacrifice for the people and they shall stand before them to minister unto them 12 Because they ministred unto them before their idols and † Heb.
but I have not been called to come in unth● king these thirty days 12 And they told to Mordecai Esthers words 13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther Think not with thy self that thou shalt escape in the kings house more then all the Jews 14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time then shall there † Heb. respiration enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place but thou and thy fathers house shall be destroyed and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this 15 ¶ Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer 16 Go gather together all the Jews that are † Heb. found present in Shushan and fast ye for me and neither eat nor drink three days night or day I also and my maidens will fa●t likewise and so will I go in unto the king which is not according to the law and if I perish I perish 17 So Mordecai † Heb. ●●ssed went his way and did according to all that Esther had commanded him CHAP. V. 1 Esther adventuring on the kings favour obtaineth the grace of the golden scept●● and inviteth the king and Haman to a banquet 6 She being encouraged by the king in her suit inviteth them to another banquet the next day 9 Haman proud of his advancement repineth at the contempt of Mordecai 14 By the counsel of Zeresh he buildeth for him 〈◊〉 pair of gallows NOw it came to pass on the third day that Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the inner court of the kings house over against the kings house and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house over against the gate of the house 2 And it was so when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court that she obtained favour in his light and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand so Esther drew near and touched the top of the sceptre 3 Then said the king unto her What wilt thou queen Esther and with is thy request it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom 4 And Esther answered If it seem good unto the king let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him 5 Then the king said Cause Haman to make haste that he may do as Esther hath said So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared 6 ¶ And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine What is thy petition and it shall be granted thee and what is thy request even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed 7 Then answered Esther and said My petition and my request is 8 If I have found favour in the sight of the king and if it please the king to grant my petition and † Heb. to do to perform my request let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them and I will do to morrow as the king hath said 9 ¶ Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart but when Haman saw Mordecai in the kings gate that he stood not up nor moved for him he was full of indignation against Mordecai 10 Nevertheless Haman refrained himself and when he came home he sent and † Heb. caused to come called for his friends and Zeresh his wife 11 And Haman told them of the glory of his riches and the multitude of his children and all the things wherein the king had promoted him and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king 12 Haman said moreover Yea Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but my self and to morrow am I invited unto her also with the king 13 Yet all this availeth me nothing so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the kings gate 14 ¶ Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him Let a † Heb. tree gallows be made of fifty cubits high and to morrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet And the thing pleased Haman and he caused the gallows to be made CHAP. VI. 1 Ahasuerus reading in the chronicles of the good service done by Mordecai taketh care for his reward 4 Haman coming to sue that Mordecai might be ban●ed unawares giveth counsel that he might do him honour 12 Complaining of his misfortun his friends tell him of his final destiny ON that night † Heb. the kings sleep fled away could not the king sleep and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles and they were read before the king 2 And it was found written that Mordecai had told of ‖ Or Bigthan ch 2.21 Bigthana and Teresh two of the kings chamberlains the keepers of the † Heb. threshold door who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus 3 And the king said What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this Then said the kings servants that ministred unto him There is nothing done for him 4 ¶ And the king said Who is in the court Now Haman was come into the outward court of the kings house to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him 5 And the kings servants said unto him Behold Haman standeth in the court And the king said Let him come in 6 So Haman came in and the king said unto him What shall be done unto the man † Heb. in whose honour the king delighteth whom the king delighteth to honour Now Haman thought in his heart To whom would the king delight to do honour more then to my self 7 And Haman answered the King For the man † Heb. in whose honour the king delighteth whom the king delighteth to honour 8 ¶ Let the royal apparel he brought † Heb. in them bring the royal apparel which the king useth to wear and the horse that the king rideth upon and the crown royal which is set upon his head 9 And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the kings most noble princes that they may aray the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour and † Heb. wherewith the king clotheth himself bring him on hors-back through the street of the city and proclaim before him Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour 10 Then the king said to Haman Make haste and take the apparel and the horse as thou hast said and do even so to Mordecai the Jew that sitteth at the kings gate † Heb. cause him to ride let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken 11 Then took Haman the apparel and the horse and arayed Mordecai and brought him on hors-back

VIII 1 Ezekiel in a vision of God at Jerusalem 5 is shewed the imaze of jealousie 7 the chambers of imagery 13 the mourners for Tammuz 16 the worshippers towards the sun 18 Gods wrath for their idolatry ANd it came to pass in the sixth year in the sixth moneth in the fifth day of the moneth as I sat in mine house and the elders of Judah sat before me that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me 2 Then I behold and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire from the appearance of his loyns even downward fire and from his loyns even upward as the appearance of brightness as the colour of amber 3 And he * Dan. 5.5 put forth the form of an hand and took me by a lock of mine head and the spirit hit me up between the earth and the heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north where was the seat of the image of jealousie which provoketh to jealousie 4 And behold the glory of the God of Israel was there according to the vision that I * Ch. 1.25 saw in the plain 5 ¶ Then said he unto me Son of man lift up thine eyes now the way towards the north so I lift up mine eyes the way toward the north and behold north-ward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousie in the entry 6 He said furthermore unto me Son of man seest thou what they do even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here that I should go far off from my sanctuary but turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations 7 ¶ And he brought me to the door of the court and when I looked behold a hole in the wall 8 Then said he unto me Son of man dig now in the wall and when I had digged in the wall behold a door 9 And he said unto me Go in and behold the wicked abominations that they do here 10 So I went in and saw and behold every form of creeping things and abominable beasts and all the idols of the house of Israel pourtrayed upon the wall round about 11 And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan with every man his censer in his hand and a thick cloud of incense went up 12 Then said he unto me Son of man hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark every man in the chambers of his imagery for they say * Ch. 9.9

III. 1 The valour and fame of Judas Maccabeus 10 He overthroweth the forces of Samaria and Syria 27 Antiochus sendeth a great power a●ainst him 44 He and his fall to fasting and prayer 58 and are encouraged THen his son Judas called Maccabeus rose up in his stead 2 And all his brethren helped him and so did all they that held with his father and they fought with cheerfulness the battel of Israel 3 So he gat his people great honour and put on a breast-plate as a giant and girt his warlike harness about him and he made battels protecting the host with his sword 4 In his acts he was like a lion and like a lions whelp roaring for his prey 5 For he pursued the wicked and sought them out and burnt up those that vexed his people 6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him and all the workers of iniquity were troubled because salvation prospered in his hand 7 He grieved also many kings and made Jacob glad with his acts and his memorial is blessed for ever 8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda destroying the ungodly out or them and turning away wrath from Israel 9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth and he † Gr. gathered together received unto him such as were ready to perish 10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together and a great host out of Samaria to fight against Israel 11 Which thing when Judas perceived he went forth to meet him and so he smote him and slew him many also fell down slain but the rest fled 12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils and Apollonius sword also and therewith he fought all his life long 13 Now when Seron a prince of the army of Syria heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war 14 He said I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him who despise the kings commandment 15 So he made him ready to go up and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him and to be avenged of the children of Israel 16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethoron Judas went forth to meet him with a small company 17 Who when they saw the host coming to meet them said unto Judas How shall we be able being so few to fight against so great a multitude and so strong seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day 18 Unto whom Judas answered * 1 Sam. 14.6 2 Chron. 14 11. It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few and with the God of heaven it is all one to deliver with a great multitude or a small company 19 For the victory of battel standeth not in the multitude of an host but strength cometh from heaven 20 They come ‖ Or unto us against us † Gr. in multitude of pride or envy and iniquity in much pride and iniquity to destroy us and our wives and children and to spoil us 21 But we fight for our lives and our laws 22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face and as for you be ye not afraid of them 23 Now assoon as had lest off speaking he leapt suddenly upon them and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him 24 And they pursued them † Gr. in the going down from the going down of Bethoron unto the plain where were slain about eight hundred men of them and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines 25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren and an exceeding great dread to fall upon the nations round about them 26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king and all nations talked of the battels of Judas 27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things he was full of indignation wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm even a very strong army 28 He opened also his treasure and gave his souldiers pay for a year commanding them to be ready † Gr. at every need whensoever he should need them 29 Nevertheless when he saw that the money of his treasures sailed and † Gr. that the collectours of tribute in the countrey were few that the tributes in the countrey were small because of the dissention and plague which he had brought upon the land ‖ Or for the taking away of the laws in taking away the laws which had been of old time 30 He feared † Gr. that he should not have that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before for he had abounded above the kings that were before him 31 Wherefore being greatly perplexed in his minde he determined to go into Persia there to take the tributes of the countreys and to gather much money 32 So he left Lysias a noble man and one of the bloud royal to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt 33 And to bring up his son Antiochus until he came again 34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces and the elephants and gave him charge of all things that he would have done as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem 35 To wit that he should send an army against them to destroy and root out the strength of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem and to take away their memorial from that place 36 And that he should place strangers in all

II. 1 By comparing what we were by 3 nature with what we are 5 by grace 10 he declareth that we are made for good works and 13 being brought near by Christ should not live as 1● Gentiles and 12 foreiners in time past but as 19 citizens with the saints and the family of God ANd * Col. 2.13 you hath be quickned who were dead in trespasses and sins 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling † Gr. the wills the desires of the flesh and of the minde and were by nature the children of wrath even as others 4 But God who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us 5 Even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved 6 And hath raised as up together and made as sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God 9 Not of works lest any man should boast 10 For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ‖ Or prepared ordained that we should walk in them 11 Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands 12 That at that time ye were without Christ being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no hope and without God in the world 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the bloud of Christ 14 For he is our peace who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man so making peace 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity ‖ Or in himself thereby 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off and to to them that were nigh 18 For * Rom. 5.2 through him we both have an access by one

XXI 1 A new heaven and a new earth 10 The heavenly Jerusalem with a full description thereof 23 She needeth no sun the glory of God is her light 24 The kings of the earth bring their riches unto her ANd * Isa 65.17 2 Pet. 3.13 I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away and there was no more sea 2 And I John saw the holy city new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying Behold the tabernacle of God is with men and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself shall be with them and be their God 4 * Chap. 7.17 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death neither sorrow nor crying neither shall there be any more pain for the former things are passed away 5 And he that sat upon the throne said * Isa 43.19 2 Cor. 5.17 Behold I make all things new And he said unto me Write for these words are true and faithful 6 And he said unto me It is done * Chap. 1.8 22.13 I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end * Isa 55.1 I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things and I will be his God and he shall be my son 8 But the fearful and unbeleeving and the abominable and murderers and whoremongers and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone which is the second death 9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues and talked with me saying Come hither I will shew thee the bride the Lambs wife 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain and shewed me that great city the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God 11 Having the glory of God and her light was like unto a stone most precious even like a jasper stone clear as crystal 12 And had a wall great and high and had twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels and names written thereon which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel 13 On the east three gates on the north three gates on the south three gates and on the west three gates 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall thereof 16 And the city lieth four-square and the length is as large as the breadth and he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs the length and the breadth and the height of it are equal 17 And he measured the wall thereof an hundred and fourty and four cubits according to the measure of a man that is of the angel 18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper and the city was pure gold like unto clear glass 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones The first foundation was jasper the second sapphire the third a chalcedony the fourth an emerald 20 The fifth sardonyx the sixth sardius the seventh chrysolite the eighth beryl the ninth a topaz the tenth a chrysoprasus the eleventh a jacinct the twelfth an amethyst 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls every several gate was of one pearl and the street of the city was pure gold as it were transparent glass 22 And I saw no temple therein for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it 23 * Isa 60 ●● And the city had no need of the sun neither of the moon to shine in it for the glory of God did lighten it and the Lamb is the light thereof 24 * Isa 60. ● And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it 25 * Isa 60.11 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day for there shall be no night there 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth neither whatsoever worketh abomination or maketh a lie but they which are written in the Lambs * Phil. 4.3 Chap. 3.5 and 20.12 book of life CHAP. XXII 1 The river of the water of life 2 The tree of life 5 The light of the city of God is himself 9 The angel will not be worshipped 18 Nothing may be added to the word of God nor taken therefrom ANd he shewed me a pure river of water of life clear as erystal proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it and of either side of the river was there the tree of life which bare twelve manner of fruits and yeelded her fruit every moneth and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations 3 And there shall be no more curse but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it and his servants shall serve him 4 And they shall see his face and his name shall be in their foreheads 5 * Chap. 2● 23 And there shall be no night there and they need no candle neither light of the sun for the Lord God giveth them light and they shall reign for ever and ever 6 And he said unto me These sayings are faithful and true And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done 7 Behold I come quickly blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophesie of this book 8 And I John saw these things and heard them And when I had heard and seen I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things 9 Then saith he unto me * Chap. 19.10 See thou do it not for I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren the prophets and of them which keep the sayings of this book worship God 10 And he saith unto me Seal not the sayings of the prophesie of this book for the time is at hand 11 He that is unjust let him be unjust still and he which is filthy let him be filthy still and he that is righteous let him be righteous still and he that is holy let him be holy still 12 And behold I come quickly and my reward is with me * Rom. 2.6 to give every man according as his work shall be 13 I am Alpha and Omega * Isa 41.4 and 44.6 Chap. 1.8 and 21.6 the beginning and the end the first and the last 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city 15 For without are dogs and sorcerers and whoremongers and murderers and idolaters and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testifie unto you these things in the churches I am the root and the offspring of David and the bright and morning star 17 And the Spirit and the Bride say Come And let him that heareth say Come * Isa 55.1 And let him that is athirst come And whosoever will let him take the water of life freely 18 For I testifie unto every man that heareth the words of the prophesie of this book * Deut. 4.2 Prov. 30 6. 14 Wo to the world and them that dwell therein 15 For the sword and their destruction draweth nigh and one people shall stand up to fight against another and swords in their hands 16 For there shall be sedition among men and invading one another they shall not regard their kings nor princes and the course of their actions shall stand in their power 17 A man shall desire to go into a city and shall not be able 18 For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled the houses shall be destroyed and men shall be afraid 19 A man shall have no pity upon his neighbour but shall destroy their houses with the sword and spoil their goods because of the lack of bread and for great tribulation 20 Behold saith God I will call together all the kings of the earth to reverence me which are from the rising of the sun from the south from the east and Libanus to turn themselves one against another and repay the things that they have done to them 21 Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen so will I do also and recompense in their bosom Thus saith the Lord God 22 My right hand shall not spare the sinners and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent bloud upon the earth 23 The fire is gone forth from his wrath and hath consumed the foundations of the earth and the sinners like the straw that is kindled 24 Wo to them that sin and keep not my commandments saith the Lord 25 I will not spare them go your way ye children from the power defile not my sanctuary 26 For the Lord knoweth all them that sin against him and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction 27 For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them for God shall not deliver you because ye have finned against him 28 Behold an horrible vision and the appearance thereof from the east 29 Where the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots and the multitude of them shall be carried as the wind upon earth that all they which hear them may fear and tremble 30 Also the Carmanians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wilde bores of the wood and with great power shall they come and joyn battel with them and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians 31 And then shall the dragons have the upper hand remembring their nature and if they shall turn themselves conspiring together in great power to persecute them 32 Then these shall be troubled and keep silence through their power and shall flee 33 And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them and consume some of them and in their host shall be fear and dread and strife ‖ Or against among their kings 34 Behold clouds from the east and from the north unto the south and they are very horrible to look upon full of wrath and storm 35 They shall smite one upon another and they shall smite down a great multitude of stars upon the earth even their own star and bloud shall be from the sword unto the belly 36 And dung of men unto the camels ‖ Or pastern or litter hough 37 And there shall be great fearfulness and trembling upon earth and they that see the wrath shall be afraid and trembling shall come upon them 38 And then shall there come great storms from the south and from the north and another part from the west 39 And strong winds shall arise from the east and shall open it and the cloud which he raised up in wrath and the star stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind shall be destroyed 40 The great and mighty clouds shall be lifted up full of wrath and the star that they may make all the earth afraid and them that dwell therein and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place and horrible star 41 Fire and hail and flying swords and many waters that all fields may be full and all rivers with the abundance of great waters 42 And they shall break down the cities and walls mountains and hills trees of the wood and grass of the medows and their corn 43 And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon and ‖ Or destroy make her afraid 44 They shall come to her and besiege her the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven and all they that be about her shall bewail her 45 And they that remain under her shall do service unto them that have put her in fear 46 And thou Asia that art ‖ Or like unto Babylon partaker of the hope of Babylon and art the glory of her person 47 Wo be unto thee thou wretch because thou hast made thy self like unto her and hast deckt thy daughters in wheredom that they might please and glory in thy lovers which have alway desired to commit whoredom with thee 48 Thou hast followed her that is hated in all her works and inventions therefore saith God 49 I will send plagues upon thee widowhood poverty famine sword and pestilence to waste thy houses with destruction and death 50 And the glory of
thy power shall be dried up as a flower when the heat shall arise that is sent over thee 51 Thou shalt be weakned as a poor woman with stripes and as one chastised with wounds so that the mighty and lovers shall not be able to receive thee 52 Would I with jealousie have so proceeded against thee saith the Lord. 53 If thou hadst not always stain my chosen exalting the stroke of thine hands and saying over their † Lat death dead when thou wast drunken 54 Set forth the beauty of thy countenance 55 The reward of thy whoredom shall be in thy bosom therefore shall thou receive recompence 56 Like as thou hast done unto my chosen saith the Lord even so shall God do unto thee and shall deliver thee into mischief 57 Thy children shall die of hunger and thou shalt fall through the sword thy cities shall be broken down and all thine shall perish with the sword in the field 58 They that be in the mountains shall die of hunger and eat their own flesh and drink their own bloud for very hunger of bread and thirst of water 59 Thou as unhappy shalt come through the sea and receive plagues again 60 And in the passage they shall rush on the idle city and shall destroy some portion of thy land and consume part of thy glory and shall return to Babylon that was destroyed 61 And thou shalt be cast down by them as stubble and they shall be unto thee as fire 62 And shall consume thee and thy cities thy land and thy mountains all thy woods and thy fruitful trees shall they burn up with fire 63 Thy children shall they carry away captive and look what thou hast they shall spoil it and ‖ Or. blemish mar the beauty of thy face CHAP. XVI 1 Babylon and other places are threatned with plagues that cannot be avoided 23 and with desolation 40 The servants of the Lord must look for troubles 51 and not hide their sins 74 but leave them and they shall be delivered WO be unto thee Babylon and Asia wo be unto thee Egypt and Syria 2 Gird up your selves with clothes of sack and hair bewail your children and be sorry for your destruction is at hand 3 A sword is sent upon you and who may turn it back 4 A fire is sent among you and who may quench it 5 Plagues are sent unto you and what is he that may drive them away 6 May any man drive away an hungry lion in the wood or may any one quench the fire in stubble when it hath begun to burn 7 May one turn again the arrow that is shot of a strong archer 8 The mighty Lord sendeth the plagues and who is he that can drive them away 9 A fire shall go forth from his wrath and who is he that may quench it 10 He shall cast lightnings and who shall not fear he shall thunder and who shall not be afraid 11 The Lord shall threaten and who shall not be utterly beaten to powder at his presence 12 The earth quaketh and the foundations thereof the sea ariseth up with waves from the deep and the waves of it are troubled and the fishes thereof also before the Lord and before the glory of his power 13 For strong is his right hand that bendeth the bowe his arrows that he shooteth are sharp and shall not miss when they begin to be shot into the ends of the world 14 Behold the plagues are sent and shall not return again until they come upon the earth 15 The fire is kindled and shall not be put out till it consume the foundation of the earth 16 Like as an arrow which is shot of a mighty archer returneth not backward even so the plagues that shall be sent upon earth shall not return again 17 Wo is me wo is me who will deliver me in those days 18 The beginning of sorrows and great mournings the beginning of famine and great death the beginning of wars and the powers shall stand in fear the beginning of evils what shall I do when these evils shall come 19 Behold famine and plague tribulation and anguish are sent as scourges for amendment 20 But for all these things they shall not turn from their wickedness nor be alway mindful of thy scourges 21 Behold victuals shall be so good cheap upon earth that they shall think themselves to be in good case and even then shall ‖ Of plagues evils grow upon earth sword famine and great confusion 22 For many of them that dwell upon earth shall perish of famine and the other that escape the hunger shall the sword destroy 23 And the dead shall be cast out as dung and there shall be no man to comfort them for the earth shall be wasted and the cities shall be cast down 24 There shall be no man lest to till the earth and to sow it 25 The trees shall give fruit and who shall gather them 26 The grapes shall ripen and who shall tread them for all places shall be desolate of men 27 So that one man shall desire to see another and to hear his voice 28 For of a city there shall be ten left and two of the field which shall hide themselves in the thick groves and in the clefts of the rocks 29 As in an orchard of olives upon every tree there are left three or four olives 30 Or as when a vineyard is gathered there are left some clusters of them that diligently seek through the vineyard 31 Even so in those da●s there shall be three or four left by them that search their houses with the sword 32 And the earth shall be laid waste and the fields thereof shall wax old and her ways and all her paths shall grow full of thorns because no man shall travel there through 33 The virgins shall mourn having no bridegrooms the women shall mourn having no husbands their daughters shall mourn having no helpers 34 In the wars shall their bridegrooms be destroyed and their husbands shall perish of famine 35 Hear now these things and understand them ye servants of the Lord. 36 Behold the word of the Lord receive it beleeve not the gods of whom the Lord spake 37 Behold the plagues draw nigh and are not slack 38 As when a woman with childe in the ninth moneth bringeth forth her son within two or three hours of her birth great pains compass her womb which pains when the childe cometh forth they slack not a moment 39 Even so shall not the plagues be slack to come upon the earth and the world shall mourn and sorrows shall come upon it on every side 40 O my people hear my word make you ready to the battel and in those evils be even as pilgrims upon the earth 41 He that selleth let him be as he that fleeth away and he that buyeth as one that will lose 42 He that occupieth merchandise as he that had no profit by it
