them that perish 16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death to the other the savour of life unto life and who is sufficient for these things 17 For we are not as many which ‖ Or deal deceitfully with * Chap. 4.2 corrupt the word of God but as of sincerity but as of God in the sight of God speak we in Christ CHAP. III. 1 Lest their false teachers should charge him with vain-glory he sheweth the faith and graces of the Corinthians to be a sufficient commendation of his ministery 6 Whereupon entring a comparison between the ministers of the law and of the gospel 12 he proveth that his ministery is so far the more excellent as the gospel of life and liberty is more glorious then the law of condemnation DO we begin again to commend our selves or need we as some others epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you 2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts known read of all men 3 For as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministred by us written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God not in tables of stone but in fleshly tables of the heart 4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward 5 Not that we are sufficient of our selves to think any thing as of our selves but our sufficiency is of God 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament not of the letter but of the spirit for the letter killeth but the spirit ‖ Or quickneth giveth life 7 But if the ministration of death written and engraven in stones was glorious so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance which glory was to be done away 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect by reason of the glory that excelleth 11 For if that which is done away was glorious much more that which remaineth is glorious 12 Seeing then that we have such hope we use great ‖ Or boldness plainness of speech 13 And not as Moses * Exod. 34.33 which put a vail over his face that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished 14 But their mindes were blinded for until this day remaineth the same vail untâ—ken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Christ 15 But even unto this day when Moses is read the vail is upon their heart 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord the vail shall be taken away 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty 18 But we all with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as ‖ Or of the Lord the Spirit by the Spirit of the Lord. CHAP. IV. 1 He declareth how he hath used all sincerity and faithful diligence in preaching the â—ospel 7 and how the troubles and persecutions which be daily endureth for the same did redound to the praise of Gods power 12 to the benefit of the church 16 and to the apostle's own eternal glory THerefore seeing we have this ministery as we have received mercy we faint not 2 But have renounced the hidden things of †Or. shâ—me dishonesty not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully but by manifestation of the truth commending our selves to every mans conscience in the sight of God 3 But if our gospel be hid it is hid to them that are lost 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which beleeve not lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ who is the image of God should shine unto them 5 For we preach not our selves but Christ Jesus the Lord and our selves your servants for Jesus sake 6 For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us 8 We are troubled on every side yet not distressed we are perplexed but ‖ Or not altogether without help or means not in despair 9 Persecuted but not forsaken cast down but not destroyed 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh 12 So then death worketh in us but life in you 13 We having the same spirit of faith according as it is written * Psal 11â— 10 I beleeved and therefore have I spoken we also beleeve and therefore speak 14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus and shall present us with you 15 For all things are for your sakes that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God 16 For which cause we faint not but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day 17 For our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory 18 While we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen for the things which are seen are temporal but the things which are not seen are eternal CHAP. V. 1 That in his assured hope of immortal glory 9 and in expâ—ctance of it and of the general judgement he laboureth to keep a good conscirence 12 not that he may herein boast of himself 14 but as one that having received life from Christ endeavoureth to live as a new creature to Christ onely 18 and by his ministery of reconciliation to reconcile others also in Christ to God FOr we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of God an house not made with hands eternal in the heavens 2 For in this we groan earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan being burdened not for that we would be unclothed but clothed upon that mortality might be swallowed up of life 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the self same thing is God who also hath given unto us the earnest of

XVII 1 Christ prayeth to his Father to glorifie him 6 to preserve his apostles 11 in unity 17 and truth 20 to glorifie them and all other beleevers with him in heaven THese words spake Jesus and lift up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour is come glorifie thy Son that thy Son also may glorifie thee 2 * Mat. 28.18 As thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him 3 And this is life eternal that they might know thee the onely true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent 4 I have glorified thee on the earth I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do 5 And now O Father glorifie thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world thine they were and thou gavest them me and they have kept thy word 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me and they have received them * Chap. 16.27 and have known surely that I came out from thee and they have beleeved that thou didst send me 9 I pray for them I pray not for the world but for them which thou hast given me for they are thine 10 And all mine are thine thine are mine

Spirit unto the Father 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord 22 In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit CHAP. III. 5 The hidden mystery 6 that the Gentiles should be saved 3 was made known to Paul by revelation 8 and to him was that grace given that 〈◊〉 he should preach it 13 He desireth them not to faint for his tribulation 14 and prayeth 19 that they may perceive the great love of Christ toward them FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote ‖ Or a little before afore in few words 4 Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 7 Whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power 8 Unto me who am less then the least of all saints is this grace given that * Gal. 1.16 I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God who created all things by Jesus Christ 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you which is your glory 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named 16 That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthned with might by his Spirit in the inner man 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height 19 And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end Amen CHAP. II. 1 That it is meet to pray and give thanks for all men and the reason why 9 How women should be attired 12 They are not permitted to teach 15 They shall be saved notwithstanding the testimonies of Gods wrath in child-birth if they continue in faith I ‖ Or desire Exhort therefore that first of all supplications prayers intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men 2 For kings and for all that are in ‖ Or eminent place authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour 4 Who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth 5 For there is one God and one mediatour between God and men the man Christ Jesus 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all ‖ Or a testimony to be testified in due time 7 * 2 Tim. 1.11 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher and an apostle I speak the truth in Christ and lie not a teacher of the Gentiles in faith verity 8 I will therefore that men pray every where lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting 9 In like manner also that * 1 Pet. 3.3 women adorn themselves in modest apparel with shamefacedness and sobriety not with ‖ Or plaited broidered hair or gold or pearls or costly aray 10 But which becometh women professing godliness with good works 11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection 12 But * 1 Cor 14 34. I suffer not a woman to teach nor to usurp authority over the man but to be in silence 13 For Adam was first formed then Eve 14 And Adam was not deceived but the woman being deceived was in the transgression 15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in child-bearing if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety CHAP. III. 1 How bishops and deacons and their wives should be qualified 14 and to what end S. Paul wrote to Timothy of these things 15 Of the church and the blessed truth therein taught and professed THis is a true saying If a man desire the office of a bishop he desireth a good work 2 * Tit. 1 6◠c. A bishop then must
perseverance and to do the duty of a faithful servant of the Lord in dividing the word aright and staying profane and vain babblings 17 Of Hymeneus and Philetus 19 The foundation of the Lord is sure 22 He is taught whereof to beware and what to follow after and in what sort the servant of the Lord ought to behave himself THou therefore my son be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me ‖ Or by among many witnesses the same commit thou to faithful men who shall be able to reach others also 3 Thou therefore endure hardness as a good souldier of Jesus Christ 4 No man that warreth intangleth himself with the affairs of this life that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a souldier 5 And if a man also strive for masteries yet is he not crowned except he strive lawfully 6 ‖ Or The husbandman labouring first must be partaker of the fruits The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits 7 Consider what I say and the Lord give thee understanding in all things 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel 9 Wherein I suffer trouble as an evil-doer even unto bonds but the word of God is not bound 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elects sakes that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory 11 It is a faithful saying For * Rom. 6.5 8. if we be dead with him we shall also live with him 12 * Rom. 8.17 If we suffer we shall also reign with him * Matth. 10.33 Mark 8.38 if we deny him he also will deny us 13 * Rom. 3.3 If we beleeve not yet he abideth faithful he cannot deny himself 14 Of these things put them in remembrance charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit but to the subverting of the hearers 15 Study to shew thy self approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth 16 But shun profane and vain babblings for they will increase unto more ungodliness 17 And their word will eat as doth a ‖ Or gangrene canker of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus 18 Who concerning the truth have erred saying that the resurrection is past already and overthrow the faith of some 19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth ‖ Or study sure having this seal The Lord knoweth them that are his And let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity 20 But in a great house there are not onely vessels of gold and of silver but also of wood and of earth * Roaâ— 9. â—â— and some to honour and some to dishonour 21 If a man therefore purge himself from these he shall be a vessel unto honour sanctified and meet for the masters use and prepared unto every good work 22 Flee also youthful lusts but follow righteousness faith charity peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart 23 But * 1 Tim. 1.4 Tit. 3.9 foolish and unlearned questions avoid knowing that they do gender strifes 24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive but be gentle unto all men apt to teach ‖ Or forbearing patient 25 In meekness instucting those that oppose themselves if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth 26 And that they may †Gr. awake recover themselves out of the snare of the devil who are †Gr. taken alive taken captive by him at his will CHAP. III. 1 He advertiseth him of the times to â—ome 6 describeth the enemies of the truth 10 propoundeth unto him his own example 16 and commendeth the holy scriptures THis know also that * 1 Tim. 4 1. 2 Pet. 3.3 Jude 18. in the last days perilous times shall come 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves covetous boasters pround blasphemers disobedient to parents unthankful unholy 3 Without natural affection truce-breakers ‖ Or â—â—ake bates false accusers incontinent fierce despisers of those that are good 4 Traitours heady high-minded lovers of pleasures more then lovers of God 5 Having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof from such turn away 6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses and lead captive silly women laden with sins led away with divers lusts 7 Ever learning and never able so come to the knowledge of the truth 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses so do these also resist the truth men of corrupt minds ‖ Or of nâ— judgment reprobate concerning the faith 9 But they shall proceed no further for their folly shall be manifest unto all men as theirs also was 10 But ‖ Or thou hast been a diligent follower of thou hast fully known my doctrine manner of life purpose faith long-suffering charity patience 11 Persecutions afflictions which came unto me at Antioch at Iconium at Lystra what persecutions I endured but out of them all the Lord delivered me 12 Yea and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse deceiving and being deceived 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of knowing of whom thou hast learned them 15 And that from a childe thou hast known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus 16 * 2 Pet. â— 21 All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction in righteousness 17 That the man of God may be perfect ‖ Or perfected throughly furnished unto all good works CHAP. IV. 1 He exhorteth him to do his duty with all care and diligence 6 certifieth him of the nearness of his death 9 willeth him to come speedily unto him and to bring Marcus with him and certain other things which he wrote for 14 warneth him to beware of Alexander the smith 16 informeth him what had befaln him at his first answering 19 and soon after he concludeth I Charge thee therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ who shall judge the quick the dead at his appearing his kingdom 2 Preach the word be instant in season out of season reprove rebuke exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned unto tables 5 But watch thou in all things endure afflictions do the work of an evangelist ‖ Or fulfil make full proof of thy ministery 6 For I am now
watchful and constant in the faith 9 to resist the cruel adversary the devil THe elders which are among you I exhort who am also an elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed 2 Feed the flock of God ‖ Or as much as in you is which is among you taking the oversight thereof not by constraint but willingly not for filthy lucre but of a ready minde 3 Neither as ‖ Or over-ruling being lords over Gods heritage but being ensamples to the flock 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away 5 Likewise ye younger submit your selves unto the elder yea all of you be subject one to another and be clothed with humility for * Jam. 4.6 God resisteth the proud and giveth grace to the humble 6 * Jam. 4.10 Humble your selves therefore under the mighty haâ—â—â— of God that he may exalt you in due time 7 * Ps 55.22 Mat. 6.25 Casting all your care upon him for he careth for you 8 Be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil as a roaring lyon walketh about seeking whom he may devour 9 Whom resisted fast in the faith knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world 10 But the God of all grace who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus after that ye have suffered a while make you perfect stabish strengthen settle you 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever Amen 12 By Silvanus a faithful brother unto you as I suppose I have written briefly exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand 13 The church that is at Babylon elected together with you saluteth you and so doth Marcus my son 14 * Rom. 15 1â— Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity Peace he with you all that are in Christ Jesus Amen ¶ The second epistle general of S. PETER CHAP. I. 1 Confirming them in hope of the increase of Gods graces 5 he exhorteth them by faith and good works to make their calling sure 12 whereof he is careful to remember them knowing that his death is at hand 1â— and warreth them to be constant in the faith of Christ who is the true Son of God by the eye witness of the apostles beholding his majesty and by the testimony of the Father and the prophets SImon Peter a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord 3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness through the knowledge of him that hath called us ‖ Or by to glory and vertue 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust 5 And besides this giving all diligence add to your faith vertue and to vertue knowledge 6 And to knowledge temperance and to temperance patience and to patience godliness 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness charity 8 For if these things be in you and abound they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ 9 But he that lacketh these things is blinde and cannot see far off and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins 10 Wherefore the rather brethren give diligence to make your calling and election sure for if ye do these things ye shall never fall 11 For so an entrance shall be ministred unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ 12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things though ye know them and be established in the present truth 13 Yea I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle to stir you up by putting you in remembrance 14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle even as * Joh. 21.18 our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me 15 Moreover I will endeavour that you may be able after my decease to have thâ—se things always in remembrance 16 For we have not followed * 1 Cor. 1.17 2.1 cunningly devised fables when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ but were eye witnesses of his majesty 17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory * Mat. 17. â— This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased 18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard when we were with him in the holy mount 19 We have also a more sure word of prophesie whereunto ye do well that ye take heed as unto a light that shineth in a dark place until the day dawn and the day-star arise in your hearts 20 Knowing this first that no prophesie of the scripture is of any private interpretation 21 For * 2 Tim. 3.16 the prophesie came not ‖ Or at any time in old time by the will of man but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the holy Ghost CHAP. II. 1 He foretelleth them of false teachers shewing the impiety and punishment both of them and their followers 7 from which the godly shall be delivered as Lot was out of Sodom 10 and more fully describeth the manners of those profane and blasphemous seducers whereby they may be the better known and avoided BUt there were false prophets also among the people even as there shall be false teachers among you who privily shall bring in damnable heresies even denying the Lord that bought them and bring upon themselves swift destruction 2 And many shall follow their ‖ Or lastivious ways as some copies read pernicious ways by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandize of you whose judgement now of a long time lingteth not and their damnation slumbreth not 4 For if God spared not * Job 4.18 Jude 6. the angels that sinned but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgement 5 And spared not the old world but saved * Gen. 7.1 Noah the eighth person a preacher of righteousness bringing in the floud upon the world of the ungodly 6 And * Gen. 19.14 turning the cities of Sodom and Gomortha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly 7 And delivered just Lot vexed with the filthy
