to_o himself_o friend_n of_o the_o mammon_n of_o unrighteousness_n who_o when_o it_o fail_v will_v receive_v he_o into_o everlasting_a habitation_n 3._o what_o we_o bestow_v in_o charity_n be_v more_o improve_v and_o bring_v we_o in_o great_a advantage_n than_o all_o our_o policy_n and_o success_n can_v produce_v by_o any_o other_o mean_n and_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n that_o general_o work_v upon_o a_o avaricious_a temper_n the_o covetous_a man_n do_v not_o love_v bare_o to_o have_v his_o gold_n keep_v but_o to_o have_v it_o increase_v and_o multiply_v and_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o place_v it_o where_o he_o may_v be_v sure_a to_o receive_v his_o own_o again_o with_o usury_n now_o the_o increase_n here_o be_v too_o visible_a to_o want_v illustration_n we_o give_v a_o small_a alm_n and_o receive_v a_o kingdom_n a_o short_a repast_n and_o have_v a_o continual_a feast_n for_o it_o we_o administer_v some_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o life_n and_o be_v pay_v with_o the_o joy_n of_o a_o future_a or_o we_o keep_v our_o brother_n a_o little_o long_a alive_a on_o earth_n and_o for_o it_o we_o live_v for_o ever_o with_o our_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n charity_n then_o do_v but_o sow_v for_o a_o wonderful_a crop_n and_o in_o due_a time_n it_o must_v reap_v above_o a_o thousand-fold_n if_o it_o faint_v not_o and_o what_o other_o way_n have_v we_o to_o bestow_v our_o wealth_n with_o such_o wisdom_n in_o such_o security_n and_o to_o such_o advantage_n will_v we_o lock_v it_o up_o and_o do_v no_o body_n good_a or_o spend_v it_o in_o luxury_n and_o do_v ourselves_o mischief_n by_o it_o will_v we_o throw_v it_o away_o vain_o and_o prodigal_o and_o be_v laugh_v at_o or_o make_v it_o a_o instrument_n of_o oppression_n and_o be_v hate_v will_v we_o render_v our_o riches_n bait_n to_o raise_v the_o desire_n of_o the_o strong_a and_o provoke_v they_o to_o rob_v we_o or_o to_o move_v the_o envy_n of_o the_o malicious_a and_o tempt_v they_o to_o destroy_v we_o or_o which_o be_v yet_o worse_o will_v we_o lie_v up_o our_o rest_n in_o they_o make_v they_o our_o dependence_n and_o place_v our_o confidence_n in_o our_o wealth_n and_o so_o affront_v almighty_a god_n and_o call_v down_o his_o vengeance_n to_o dissipate_v our_o fortune_n to_o plague_v our_o body_n and_o to_o damn_v our_o soul_n all_o other_o way_n do_v but_o make_v what_o god_n design_v for_o our_o comfort_n to_o be_v to_o we_o a_o occasion_n of_o fall_v and_o who_o will_v not_o then_o take_v charity_n for_o his_o director_n in_o distribute_v his_o worldly_a good_n to_o please_v his_o god_n to_o oblige_v his_o saviour_n to_o give_v his_o brethren_n support_v and_o himself_o immortality_n iii_o we_o come_v now_o to_o consider_v our_o three_o and_o last_o motive_n to_o charity_n the_o distinction_n and_o peculiar_a degree_n of_o glory_n which_o shall_v attend_v the_o charitable_a man_n in_o another_o life_n this_o be_v indeed_o a_o argument_n proper_a to_o work_v upon_o our_o ambition_n and_o therefore_o may_v be_v think_v to_o have_v no_o place_n here_o since_o we_o can_v hardly_o imagine_v that_o there_o be_v room_n for_o ambition_n in_o heaven_n the_o least_o mansion_n in_o that_o bless_a state_n will_v sufficient_o fill_v all_o our_o desire_n and_o even_o surpass_v our_o hope_n and_o to_o be_v a_o doorkeeper_n in_o the_o house_n of_o our_o god_n will_v be_v a_o more_o honourable_a and_o happy_a employment_n than_o to_o govern_v in_o the_o palace_n of_o prince_n but_o yet_o god_n represent_v to_o we_o in_o scripture_n that_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o happiness_n in_o another_o life_n and_o god_n never_o represent_v any_o thing_n in_o vain_a but_o expect_v it_o shall_v have_v its_o influence_n upon_o we_o if_o he_o reveal_v to_o we_o that_o there_o be_v some_o place_n in_o heaven_n itself_o more_o desirable_a than_o other_o it_o be_v for_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v more_o desire_v they_o and_o be_v more_o inflame_a in_o our_o affection_n and_o more_o earnest_a in_o our_o pursuit_n of_o they_o for_o there_o be_v the_o very_a same_o reason_n for_o our_o more_o zealous_a prosecution_n of_o a_o great_a good_a as_o there_o be_v for_o our_o prosecute_n of_o good_a at_o all_o so_o that_o when_o great_a degree_n of_o glory_n be_v propose_v to_o invite_v we_o to_o charity_n it_o be_v that_o we_o may_v particular_o engage_v in_o this_o work_n and_o promote_v it_o with_o more_o than_o ordinary_a zeal_n it_o be_v that_o we_o may_v endeavour_v to_o excel_v and_o be_v eminent_a in_o this_o christian_a duty_n here_o as_o we_o will_v excel_v and_o be_v eminent_a in_o the_o triumphant_a church_n of_o christ_n hereafter_o we_o do_v not_o know_v wherein_o will_v consist_v the_o distinction_n between_o saint_n in_o heaven_n but_o whatever_o it_o be_v it_o will_v be_v something_o that_o be_v excellent_a and_o desirable_a and_o a_o accession_n to_o our_o happiness_n and_o we_o ought_v to_o believe_v it_o be_v worth_a strive_v for_o and_o it_o be_v commendable_a and_o what_o god_n expect_v from_o we_o to_o aspire_v after_o it_o if_o it_o consist_v in_o great_a perfection_n in_o ourselves_o a_o noble_a exaltation_n of_o our_o nature_n and_o improvement_n of_o our_o faculty_n the_o common_a principle_n of_o self-love_n will_v carry_v we_o to_o desire_v it_o and_o beside_o all_o perfection_n bring_v we_o the_o near_a to_o god_n image_n the_o love_n of_o god_n too_o which_o we_o shall_v have_v in_o heaven_n in_o the_o great_a degree_n and_o shall_v have_v here_o in_o some_o proportion_n shall_v urge_v we_o to_o covet_v it_o as_o far_o as_o possible_a and_o to_o endeavour_v to_o be_v as_o like_v he_o as_o we_o can_v if_o it_o consist_v in_o be_v more_o esteem_v by_o the_o angel_n and_o bless_a spirit_n and_o more_o belove_v by_o the_o saint_n many_o of_o who_o the_o charitable_a man_n may_v have_v relieve_v in_o their_o militant_a state_n there_o be_v no_o good_a man_n but_o will_v earnest_o wish_v to_o approve_v himself_o to_o the_o judgement_n and_o unite_v himself_o to_o the_o affection_n of_o such_o glorious_a being_n as_n far_o as_o possible_o he_o can_v especial_o since_o they_o be_v to_o be_v his_o company_n to_o all_o eternity_n and_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o their_o society_n be_v one_o great_a part_n of_o his_o happiness_n or_o if_o it_o consist_v in_o a_o great_a share_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o our_o saviour_n a_o near_a approach_n to_o they_o or_o a_o close_a insight_n into_o the_o glorious_a excellency_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n we_o can_v desire_v too_o ardent_o to_o have_v all_o possible_a advantage_n for_o so_o delightful_a and_o ravish_a a_o contemplation_n to_o come_v as_o near_o as_o we_o can_v to_o our_o god_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o perfection_n to_o be_v as_o much_o as_o possible_a with_o he_o and_o as_o dear_a as_o possible_a to_o he_o sure_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o desirable_a than_o to_o follow_v the_o lamb_n whither_o soever_o he_o go_v and_o to_o be_v the_o first_o fruit_n unto_o god_n and_o to_o the_o lamb._n there_o can_v be_v no_o question_n of_o this_o that_o the_o great_a degree_n of_o glory_n in_o heaven_n be_v to_o be_v endeavour_v after_o with_o the_o great_a degree_n of_o affection_n and_o earnestness_n nor_o can_v it_o be_v doubt_v but_o that_o our_o temporal_a good_n be_v most_o wise_o dispense_v in_o such_o act_n of_o pity_n and_o charity_n as_o may_v give_v we_o a_o expectation_n of_o this_o exceed_a and_o eternal_a weight_n of_o glory_n all_o the_o difficulty_n be_v to_o find_v out_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o distinction_n and_o to_o know_v upon_o what_o ground_n it_o be_v that_o the_o charitable_a man_n be_v entitle_v to_o this_o wonderful_a advantage_n and_o that_o a_o alm_n on_o earth_n shall_v find_v such_o acceptance_n in_o heaven_n now_o though_o we_o ought_v always_o to_o be_v entire_o satisfy_v with_o the_o justice_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o god_n conduct_n and_o to_o conclude_v that_o it_o must_v be_v necessary_o wise_a and_o good_a though_o we_o can_v see_v distinct_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o yet_o because_o man_n do_v not_o love_v a_o arbitrary_a deal_v but_o be_v desirous_a to_o have_v his_o understanding_n go_v along_o with_o his_o will_n and_o because_o it_o may_v perhaps_o be_v some_o further_a motive_n to_o quicken_v our_o charity_n i_o shall_v point_v out_o two_o or_o three_o of_o those_o ground_n which_o we_o may_v probable_o guess_v do_v give_v occasion_n to_o this_o procedure_n and_o those_o i_o shall_v but_o hint_n very_o brief_o and_o so_o conclude_v 1._o because_o the_o charitable_a man_n most_o resemble_v god_n in_o that_o attribute_n which_o he_o profess_v himself_o most_o to_o delight_n in_o viz._n his_o mercy_n and_o compassion_n so_o that_o if_o there_o be_v different_a degree_n of_o happiness_n
