XIII 1 In the ●●pe of a line● girdle kidden at Euphrates God prefigureth the destruction of his people 12Vnder the parable of the bottles filled with wine he foretelleth their drunkenness in misery 15 He exhorteth to prevent their future judgements 22 He sheweth their abominations are the cause thereof THus saith the LORD unto me Go and get thee a linen girdle and put it upon thy loyns and put it not in water 2 So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD and put it on my loyns 3 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time saying 4 Take the girdle that thou hast got which is upon thy loyns and arise go to Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock 5 So I went and hid it by Euphrates as the LORD commanded me 6 And it came to pass after many days that the LORD said unto me Arise go to Euphrates and take the girdle from thence which I commanded thee to hide there 7 Then I went to Euphrates and digged and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it and behold the girdle was marred it was profitable for nothing 8 Then the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 Thus saith the LORD After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem 10 This evil people which refuse to hear my words which walk in the ‖ Or stubb ●nness imagination of their heart and walk after other gods to serve them and to worship them shall even be as this girdle which is good for nothing 11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loyns of a man so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah saith the LORD that they might be unto me for a people for a name and for a praise for a glory but they would not hear 12 ¶ Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Every bottle shall be filled with wine and they shall say unto thee Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine 13 Then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD Behold I will fill all the inhabitants of this land even the kings that sit upon Davids throne and the priests and the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with drunkenness 14 And I will dash them † Heb. a man against his brother one against another even the fathers and the sons together saith the LORD I will not pity nor spare not have mercy † Heb. from destroying them but destroy them 15 ¶ Hear ye and give ear be not proud for the LORD hath spoken 16 Give glory to the LORD your God before he cause * If. 8.22 darkness and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains and while ye look for light he turn it into the shadow of death and make it gross darkness 17 But if ye will not hear it my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride and * La. 1.2 16 and 2.18 mine eye shall weep sore and run down with tears because the LORDs flock is carried away captive 18 Say unto the king and to the queen Humble your selves sit down for your ‖ Or head-tires principalities shall come down even the crown of your glory 19 The cities of the south shall be shut up and none shall open them Judah shall be carried away captive all of it it shall be wholly carried away captive 20 Lift up your eyes and behold them that come from the north where is the flock that was given thee thy beautiful flock 21 What wilt thou say when he shall † Heb. visit upon punish thee for thou hast taught them to be captains and as chief over thee shall not sorrows take thee as a woman in travail 22 ¶ And it thou say in thine heart * Ch 5.19 and 16.10 Wherefore come these things upon me for the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered and thy heels ‖ Or shall be violently taken away made bare 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots then may ye also do good that are † Heb. caught accustomed to do evil 24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness 25 This is thy lot the portion of thy measures from me saith the LORD because thou hast forgotten me and trusted in falshood 26 Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face that thy shame may appear 27 I have seen thine adulteries and thy neighings the lewdness of thy whoredom and thine abominations on the hills in the fields wo unto thee O Jerusalem wilt thou not be made clean † Heb. after when ●et when shall it once be CHAP. XIV 1 The grievous famine 7 causeth Jeremiah to pray 10 The Lord will not be intreated for the people 13 Lying prophets are no excuse for them 17 Jeremiah is moved to complain for them THe word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning † Heb. the words of the dearths or restraints the dearth 2 Judah mourneth and the gates thereof languish they are black unto the ground and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up 3 And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters they came to the pits and found no water they returned with their vessels empty they were ashamed and confounded and covered their heads 4 Because the ground is chapt for there was no rain in the earth the plowmen were ashamed they covered their heads 5 Yea the hind also calved in the field and forsook it because there was no grass 6 And the wilde asses did stand in the high places they snuffed up the wind
deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressour and do no wrong do no violence to the stranger the fatherless nor the widow neither shed innocent bloud in this place 4 For if ye do this thing indeed * Ch. 17.25 then shall there enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting ‖ Heb. for David upon his throne upon the throne of David riding in chariots and on horses he and his servants and his people 5 But if ye will not hear these words I swear by my self saith the LORD that this house shall become a desolation 6 For thus saith the LORD unto the kings house of Judah Thou art Gilead unto me and the head of Lebanon yet surely I will make thee a wilderness and cities which are not inhabited 7 And I will prepare destroyers against thee every one with his weapons and they shall cut down thy choice cedars and cast them into the fire 8 And many nations shall pass by this city and they shall say every man to his neighbour * Deu 29.24 1 Kin. 9.8 Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city 9 Then they shall answer Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and worshipped other gods and served them 10 ¶ Weep ye not for the dead neither bemoan him but weep sore for him that goeth away for he shall return no more nor see his native countrey 11 For thus saith the LORD touching Shallum The son of Josiah king of Judah which reigned in stead of Josiah his father which went forth out of this place He shall not return thither any more 12 But he shall die in the place whither they have led him captive and shall see this land no more 13 ¶ Wo unto * Le. 19.13 Deu. 24.14 15. Hab. 2.9 him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness and his chambers by wrong that useth his neighbours service without wages and giveth him not for his work 14 That saith I will build me a wide house and † Heb. through●ired large chambers and cutteth him out ‖ Or my w●●●● windows and it is cieled with cedar and painted with vermilion 15 Shalt thou reign because thou closest thy self in cedar did not thy father eat and drink and do judgement and justice and then it was well with him 16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy then it was well with him was not this to know me saith the LORD 17 But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness and for to shed innocent bloud and for oppression and for ‖ Or incursion violence to do it 18 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah they shall not lament for him saying Ah my brother or ah sister they shall not lament for him saying Ah Lord or ah his glory 19 He shall be buried with the burial of an ass drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem 20 ¶ Go up to Lebanon and cry and lift up thy voice in Bashan and cry from the passages for all thy lovers are destroyed 21 I spake unto thee in thy † Heb. prosperities prosperity but thou saidst I will not hear this hath been thy manner from thy youth that thou obeyedst not my voice 22 The wind shall eat up all thy pastours and thy lovers shall go into captivity surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness 23 O † Heb. inhabitress inhabitant of Lebanon that makest thy nest in the cedars how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee the pain as of a woman in travail 24 As I live saith the LORD though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet upon my right hand yet would I pluck thee thence 25 And I will give thee into the hand of them that seek thy life and into the hand of them whose face thou fearest even into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of the Caldeans 26 And I will cast thee out and thy mother that bare thee into another countrey where ye were not born and there shall ye die 27 But to the land whereunto they † Heb. lift up their mind● desire to return thither shall they not return 28 Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol is he a vessel wherein is no pleasure wherefore are they cast out he and his seed and are cast into a land which they know not 29 O earth earth earth hear the word of the LORD 30 Thus saith the LORD Write ye this man childless a man that shall not prosper in his days for no man of his seed shall prosper sitting upon the throne of David and rusing any more in Judah CHAP. XXIII 1 He prophesieth a restauration of the scattered flock 5 Christ shall rule and save them 9 Against false prophets 33 and mockers of the true prophets * Ezek. 34.2 WO be unto the pastours that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture saith the LORD 2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastours that feed my people Ye have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not visited them behold I will visit upon you the evil of your doings saith the LORD 3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countreys whither I have driven them and will bring them again to their folds and they shall be fruitful and increase 4 And I will set up * Ch. 3.15 Ezek 34.11 c. shepherds over them which shall feed them and they shall fear no more nor be dismayed neither shall they be lacking saith the LORD 5 ¶ Behold * Isa 4.2 40.11 Ch. 33.14 15. Jeho●a●●sid●enu THE LORD OUR RIGH TEOUSNESS 7 Therefore behold * Ch. 16.14 15. the days come saith the LORD that they shall no more say The LORD liveth which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt 8 But The LORD liveth which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north countrey and from all countreys whither I had driven them and they shall dwell in their own land 9 ¶ Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets all my bones shake I am like a drunken man and like a man whom wine hath overcome because of the LORD and because of the words of his holiness 10 For the land is full of adulterers for because of ‖ Or cursing swearing the land mourneth the pleasant places of the wilderness
O thou that dwellest in the land the time is come the day of trouble is near and not the ‖ Or e●bo sounding again of the mountains 8 Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee and accomplish mine anger upon thee and I will judge thee according to thy ways and will recompense thee for all thine abominations 9 And mine eye shall not spare neither will I have pity I will recompense † Heb. upon thee thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee and ye shall know that I am the LORD that smiteth 10 Behold the day behold it is come the morning is gone forth the rod hath blossomed pride hath budded 11 Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness none of them shall remain nor of their ‖ Or tumule multitude nor any of ‖ Or their tumultuous persons theirs neither shall there be waiting for them 12 The time is come the day draweth near let not the buyer rejoyce nor the seller mourn for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof 13 For the seller shall not return to that which is sold † Heb. though their life were yet among the living although they were yet alive for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof which shall not return neither shall any strengthen himself ‖ Or a●●se life is in his iniquity in † Heb. his iniquity the iniquity of his life 14 They have blown the trumpet even to make all ready but none goeth to the battel for my wrath is upon all the multitude thereof 15 The sword is without and the pestilence and the famine within he that is in the field shall die with the sword and he that is in the city famine and pestilence shall devour him 16 ¶ But they that escape of them shall escape and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys all of them mourning every one for his iniquity 17 All * Is 13.7 Jer. 6.24 hands shall be feeble all knees shall † Heb. go into water be weak as water 18 They shall also * Is 15.2 3. Jer. 48.37 gird themselves with sackcloth and horrour shall cover them and shame shall be upon all faces and baldness upon all their heads 19 They shall cast their silver in the streets and their gold shall be † Heb. for a separation or uncleanness removed their * Pr. 11.4 Zeph. 1.18 Ecclus 5.8 silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD they shall not satisfie their souls neither fill their bowels ‖ Or because their iniquity is their stumbling-block because it is the stumbling-block of their iniquity 20 ¶ As for the beauty of his ornament he set it in majesty but they made the images of their abominations and of their detectable things therein therefore have I ‖ Or made it unto them an unclean thing set it far from them 21 And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil and they shall pollute it 22 My face will I turn also from them and they shall pollute my secret place for the ‖ Or bur●lers robbers shall enter into it and defile it 23 ¶ Make a chain for the land is full of bloudy crimes and the city is full of violence 24 Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen and they shall possess their houses I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease and ‖ Or they shall inb●rit their holy places their holy place shall be defiled 25 † Heb. cutting off Destruction cometh and they shall seek peace and there shall be none 26 Mischief shall come upon mischief and rumour shall be upon rumour then shall they seek a vision of the prophet but the law shall perish from the priest and counsel from the ancients 27 The king shall mourn and the printe shall be clothed with desolation and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled I will do unto them after their way and † Heb. with their judgements according to their deserts will I judge them and they shall knew that I am the LORD CHAP. VIII 1 Ezekiel in a vision of God at Jerusalem 5 is shewed the imaze of jealousie 7 the chambers of imagery 13 the mourners for Tammuz 16 the worshippers towards the sun 18 Gods wrath for their idolatry ANd it came to pass in the sixth year in the sixth moneth in the fifth day of the moneth as I sat in mine house and the elders of Judah sat before me that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me 2 Then I behold and lo a likeness as the appearance of fire from the appearance of his loyns even downward fire and from his loyns even upward as the appearance of brightness as the colour of amber 3 And he * Dan. 5.5 put forth the form of an hand and took me by a lock of mine head and the spirit hit me up between the earth and the heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem to the door of the inner gate that looketh toward the north where was the seat of the image of jealousie which provoketh to jealousie 4 And behold the glory of the God of Israel was there according to the vision that I * Ch. 1.25 saw in the plain 5 ¶ Then said he unto me Son of man lift up thine eyes now the way towards the north so I lift up mine eyes the way toward the north and behold north-ward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousie in the entry 6 He said furthermore unto me Son of man seest thou what they do even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here that I should go far off from my sanctuary but turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations 7 ¶ And he brought me to the door of the court and when I looked behold a hole in the wall 8 Then said he unto me Son of man dig now in the wall and when I had digged in the wall behold a door 9 And he said unto me Go in and behold the wicked abominations that they do here 10 So I went in and saw and behold every form of creeping things and abominable beasts and all the idols of the house of Israel pourtrayed upon the wall round about 11 And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan with every man his censer in his hand and a thick cloud of incense went up 12 Then said he unto me Son of man hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark every man in the chambers of his imagery for they say * Ch. 9.9
The LORD seeth us not the LORD hath forsaken the earth 13 ¶ He said also unto me Turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do 14 Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORDs house which was towards the north and behold there sat women weeping for Tammuz 15 ¶ Then said he unto me Hast thou seen this O son of man turn thee yet again and thou shalt see greater abominations then these 16 And he brought me into the inner court of the LORDs house and behold at the door of the temple of the LORD between the porch and the altar were about five and twenty men with their backs toward the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east and they worshipped the sun toward the east 17 ¶ Then he said unto me Hast thou seen this O son of man ‖ Or Is there any thing lighter then to commit Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here for they have filled the land with violence and have returned to provoke me to anger and lo they put the branch to their nose 18 Therefore will I also deal in fury mine * Ch. 5.11 and 7.4 eye shall not spare neither will I have pity and though they * Pr. 1.28 Isa 1.15 Jer. 11.11 Mic. 3.4 cry in mine ears with a loud voice yet will I not hear them CHAP. IX 1 A vision whereby is shewed the preservation of some 5 and the destruction of the rest 8 God cannot be intreated for them HE cried also in mine ears with a loud voice saying Cause them that have charge over the city to draw near even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand 2 And behold six men came from the way of the higher gate † Heb. which is turned which lieth toward the north and every man † Heb. a weapon of his breaking in pieces a slaughter-weapon in his hand and one man among them was clothed with linen with a writers inkhorn † Heb. upon his loyns by his side and they went in and stood beside the brasen altar 3 And the glory of the God of Israel was gone up from the cherub whereupon he was to the threshold of the house and he called to the man clothed with linen which had the writers inkhorn by his side 4 And the LORD said unto him Go through the midst of the city through the midst of Jerusalem and † Heb. mark a mark set * Ex. 12.7 Rev. 7.3 a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof 5 ¶ And to the others he said in † Heb. mine ears mine hearing Go ye after him through the city and smite let not your eye spare neither have ye pity 6 Slay † Heb. to destruction utterly old and young both maids and little children and women but come not near any man upon whom is the mark and begin at my sanctuary then they began at the ancient men which were before the house 7 And he said unto them Defile the house and fill the courts with the slain go ye forth and they went forth and slew in the city 8 ¶ And it came to pass while they were slaying them and I was lest that I fell upon my face and cried and said Ah Lord GOD wilt thou destroy all the residue of Israel in thy pouring out of thy fury upon Jerusalem 9 Then said he unto me The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great and the land is † Heb. filled with full of bloud and the city full of ‖ Or wresting of judgement perversness for they say * Ch. 8.12 The LORD hath forsaken the earth and the LORD seeth not 10 And as for me also mine * Ch. 5.11 and 7.4 and 8.18 eye shall not spare neither will I have pity but I will recompense their way upon their head 11 And behold the man clothed with linen which had the ink-horn by his side † Heb. returned the word reported the matter saying I have done as thou hast commanded me CHAP. X. 1 The vision of the coals of fire to be scattered over the city 8 The vision of the cherubims THen I looked and behold in the * Ch. 1 22. firmament that was above the head of the cherubims there appeared over them as it were a sapphire-stone as the appearance of the likeness of a throne 2 And he spake unto the man clothed with linen and said Go in between the wheels even under the cherub and fill † Heb. the hollow of thine hand thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims and scatter them over the city And he went in in my sight 3 Now the cherubims stood on the right side of the house when the man went in and the cloud filled the inner court 4 Then the glory of the LORD † Heb. was lifted up went up from the cherub and stood over the threshold of the house and the house was filled with the cloud and the court was full of the brightness of the LORDs glory 5 And the * Ch. 1.24 sound of the cherubims wings was heard even to the utter court as the voice of the almighty God when he speaketh 6 And it came to pass that when he had commanded the man clothed with linen saying Take fire from between the wheels from between the cherubims then he went in and stood beside the wheels 7 And one cherub † Heb. s●ot forth stretched forth his hand from between the cherubims unto the fire that was between the cherubims and took thereof and pat it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen who took it and went out 8 ¶ And there appeared in the cherubims the form of a mans hand under their wings 9 And when I looked behold the four wheels by the cherubims one wheel by one cherub and another wheel by another cherub and the appearance of the wheels was as the colour of a * Ch. 1.16 beryl-stone 10 And as for their appearances they four had one likeness as if a wheel had been in the midst of a wheel 11 When they went they went upon their four sides they turned not as they went but to the place whither the head looked they followed it they turned not as they went 12 And their whole † Heb. fresh body and their backs and their hands and their wings and the wheels were full of eyes round about even the wheels that they four had 13 As for the wheels ‖ Or they were called in my hearing Wheel or Galgal it was cried unto them in my hearing O wheel 14 And every one had four faces the first face was the face of a cherub and the second face was the face of a man and the
third the face of a lion and the fourth the face of an eagle 15 And the cherubims were lifted up this is the living creature that I saw by the river of Chebar 16 And when the cherubims went the wheels went by them and when the cherubims lift up their wings to mount up from the earth the same wheels also turned not from beside them 17 When they stood these stood and when they were lifted up these lift up themselves also for the spirit of the living creature was in them 18 Then the glory of the LORD departed from off the threshold of the house and stood over the cherubims 19 And the cherubims lift up their wings and mounted up from the earth in my sight when they went out the wheels also were besides them and every one stood at the door of the east-gate of the LORDs house and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above 20 This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Ch●bar and I knew that they were the cherubims 21 Every one had four faces apiece and every one four wings and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings 22 And the likeness of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the river of Chebar their appearances and themselves they went every one straight forward CHAP. XI 1 The presumption of the princes 4 Their sin and judgement 13 Ezekiel complaining God sheweth him his purpose in saving a remnant 21 and punishing the wicked 22 The glory of God leaveth the city 24 Ezekiel is returned to the captivity MOreover the spirit lift me up and brought me unto the east-gate of the LORDs house which looketh east-ward and behold at the door of the gate five and twenty men among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azur and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah princes of the people 2 Then said he unto me Son of man these are the men that devise mischief and give wicked counsel in this city 3 Which say ‖ Or It is not for us to build sauses near It is not * 2 Pet. 3.4 near let us build houses this city is the caldron and we be the flesh 4 ¶ Therefore prophesie against them prophesie O son of man 5 And the spirit of the LORD fell upon me and said unto me Speak Thus saith the LORD Thus have ye said O house of Israel for I know the things that come into your minde every one of them 6 Ye have multiplied your slain in this city and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain 7 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Your slain whom ye have laid in the midst of it they are the flesh and this city is the caldron but I will bring you forth out of the midst of it 8 Ye have feared the sword and I will bring a sword upon you saith the Lord GOD. 9 And I will bring you out of the midst thereof and deliver you into the hands of strangers and will execute judgements among you 10 Ye shall fall by the sword I will judge you in the border of Israel and ye shall know that I am the LORD 11 This city shall not be your caldron neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof but I will judge you in the border of Israel 12 And ye shall know that I am the LORD ‖ Or ●●ick have ●ot walked for ye have not walked in my statutes neither executed my judgements but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you 13 ¶ And it came to pass when l prophesied that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died then fell I down upon my face and cried with a loud voice and said Ah Lord GOD wilt thou make a full end of the remnant of Israel 14 Again the word of the LORD came unto me saying 15 Son of man thy brethren even thy brethren the men of thy kindred and all the house of Israel wholly are they unto whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said Get ye far from the LORD unto us is this land given in possession 16 Therefore say Thus saith the Lord GOD Although I have cast them far off among the heathen and although I have scattered them among the countreys yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countreys where they shall come 17 Therefore say Thus saith the Lord GOD I will even gather you from the people and assemble you out of the countreys where ye have been scattered and I will give you the land of Israel 18 And they shall come thither and they shall take away all the detestable things thereof and all the abominations thereof from thence 19 And * Jer. 22.29 Chr. 36.26 I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within you and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh and will give them an heart of flesh 20 That they may walk in my statutes and keep mine ordinances and do them and they shall be my people and I will be their God 21 But as for them whose heart walketh after the heart of their detestable things and their abominations I will recompense their way upon their own heads saith the Lord GOD. 22 ¶ Then did the cherubims lift up their wings and the wheels besides them and the glory of the God of Israel was over them above 23 And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city and stood upon the mountain which is on the east-side of the city 24 ¶ Afterwards the spirit took me up and brought me in vision by the spirit of God into Caldea to them of the captivity so the vision that I had seen went up from me 25 Then I spake unto them of the captivity all the things that the LORD had shewed me CHAP. XX. 1 Of silence and speaking 10 Of gifts and gain 18 Of slipping by the tongue 24 Of lying 27 Of divers advertisements THere is a reproof that is not ‖ Or seasonable comely again some man holdeth his tongue and he is wise 2 It is much better to reprove then to be angry secretly and he that confesseth his fault shall be preserved from hurt 3 How good is it when thou art reproved to shew repentance for so shalt thou escape wilful sin 4 As is the lust of * Chap. 30.20 an eunuch to deflower a virgin so is he that executeth judgement with violence 5 There is one that keepeth silence and is found wise and another by much babbling becometh hateful 6 Some man holdeth his tongue because he hath not to answer and some keepeth silence * Ec●les 3.7 knowing his time 7 A wise man will hold his * Ch. 32.4 tongue till he see opportunity but a babbler and a fool will regard no time 8 He that useth many words shall be abhorred and he that taketh to himself authority therein shall be hated 9 There is a sinner that hath good success in evil things and there is a gain that turneth to loss 10 There is a gift that shall not profit thee and there is a gift whose recompence is double 11 There is an abasement because of glory and there is that lifteth up his head from a low estate 12 There is that buyeth much for a little and repayeth it seven-fold 13 * Chap. 6. ●● A wise man by his words maketh himself beloved but the ‖ Or pleasant conceits graces of fools shall be ‖ Or lost or spilt poured out 14 The gift of a fool shall do thee no good when thou hast it neither yet of the envious for his necessity † Gr. for his eyes are many for one to receive for he looketh to receive many things for one 15 He giveth little and upbraideth much he openeth his mouth like a crier to day he lendeth and to morrow will he ask it again such a one is to be hated of God and man 16 The fool saith I have no friends I have no thank for all my good deeds and they that eat my bread speak evil of me 17 How oft and of how many shall he be laughed to scorn for he knoweth not aright what it is to have and it is all one unto him as if he had it not 18 To slip upon a pavement is better then to slip with the tongue so the fall of the wicked shall come speedily 19 ‖ Or an unpleasant fellow An unseasonable tale will always be in the mouth of the unwise 20 A

III. 1 The valour and fame of Judas Maccabeus 10 He overthroweth the forces of Samaria and Syria 27 Antiochus sendeth a great power a●ainst him 44 He and his fall to fasting and prayer 58 and are encouraged THen his son Judas called Maccabeus rose up in his stead 2 And all his brethren helped him and so did all they that held with his father and they fought with cheerfulness the battel of Israel 3 So he gat his people great honour and put on a breast-plate as a giant and girt his warlike harness about him and he made battels protecting the host with his sword 4 In his acts he was like a lion and like a lions whelp roaring for his prey 5 For he pursued the wicked and sought them out and burnt up those that vexed his people 6 Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him and all the workers of iniquity were troubled because salvation prospered in his hand 7 He grieved also many kings and made Jacob glad with his acts and his memorial is blessed for ever 8 Moreover he went through the cities of Juda destroying the ungodly out or them and turning away wrath from Israel 9 So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth and he † Gr. gathered together received unto him such as were ready to perish 10 Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together and a great host out of Samaria to fight against Israel 11 Which thing when Judas perceived he went forth to meet him and so he smote him and slew him many also fell down slain but the rest fled 12 Wherefore Judas took their spoils and Apollonius sword also and therewith he fought all his life long 13 Now when Seron a prince of the army of Syria heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war 14 He said I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him who despise the kings commandment 15 So he made him ready to go up and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him and to be avenged of the children of Israel 16 And when he came near to the going up of Bethoron Judas went forth to meet him with a small company 17 Who when they saw the host coming to meet them said unto Judas How shall we be able being so few to fight against so great a multitude and so strong seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day 18 Unto whom Judas answered * 1 Sam. 14.6 2 Chron. 14 11. It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few and with the God of heaven it is all one to deliver with a great multitude or a small company 19 For the victory of battel standeth not in the multitude of an host but strength cometh from heaven 20 They come ‖ Or unto us against us † Gr. in multitude of pride or envy and iniquity in much pride and iniquity to destroy us and our wives and children and to spoil us 21 But we fight for our lives and our laws 22 Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face and as for you be ye not afraid of them 23 Now assoon as had lest off speaking he leapt suddenly upon them and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him 24 And they pursued them † Gr. in the going down from the going down of Bethoron unto the plain where were slain about eight hundred men of them and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines 25 Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren and an exceeding great dread to fall upon the nations round about them 26 Insomuch as his fame came unto the king and all nations talked of the battels of Judas 27 Now when king Antiochus heard these things he was full of indignation wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm even a very strong army 28 He opened also his treasure and gave his souldiers pay for a year commanding them to be ready † Gr. at every need whensoever he should need them 29 Nevertheless when he saw that the money of his treasures sailed and † Gr. that the collectours of tribute in the countrey were few that the tributes in the countrey were small because of the dissention and plague which he had brought upon the land ‖ Or for the taking away of the laws in taking away the laws which had been of old time 30 He feared † Gr. that he should not have that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before for he had abounded above the kings that were before him 31 Wherefore being greatly perplexed in his minde he determined to go into Persia there to take the tributes of the countreys and to gather much money 32 So he left Lysias a noble man and one of the bloud royal to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt 33 And to bring up his son Antiochus until he came again 34 Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces and the elephants and gave him charge of all things that he would have done as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem 35 To wit that he should send an army against them to destroy and root out the strength of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem and to take away their memorial from that place 36 And that he should place strangers in all

XXVII 1 David sustaineth his faith by the power of God 4 by his love to the service of God 9 by prayer ¶ A psalm of David THe LORD is * Mic. 7.8 my light and my salvation whom shall I fear * Ps 118.6 the LORD is the strength of my life of whom shall I be afraid 2 When the wicked even mine enemies and my foes † Heb. approached against me came upon me to eat up my flesh they stumbled and fell 3 * Psal 3.6 Though an host should encamp against me my heart shall not fear though war should rise against me in this will I be confident 4 One thing have I desired of the LORD that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life to behold ‖ Or the delight the beauty of the LORD and to enquire in his temple 5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me he shall set me up upon a rock 6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices † Heb. of shouting of joy I will sing yea I will sing praises unto the LORD 7 Hear O LORD when I cry with my voice have mercy also upon me and answer me 8 ‖ Or my heart said unto thee Zet my face seek thy face c When thou saidst Seek ye my face my heart said unto thee Thy face LORD will I seek 9 Hide not thy face far from me put not thy servant away in anger thou hast been my help leave me not neither forsake me O God of my salvation 10 When my father and my mother forsake me then the LORD † Heb. will gather me will take me up 11 * Psal 25. ● and 86.11 and 119. XLV 1 The praise of Moses 6 of Aaron 23 and of Phinees ANd he brought out of him a merciful man which found favour in the sight of all flesh even * Exod. 11.3 Moses beloved of God and men whose memorial is blessed 2 He made him like to the glorious saints and magnified him so that his enemies stood in fear of him 3 By his words he caused the wonders to cease and he made him * Exod. 7.8 9 10. chapters glorious in the sight of kings and gave him a commandment for his people and shewed him part of his glory 4 * Num. 12.3 He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness and chose him out of all men 5 He made him to hear his voice and brought him into the dark cloud and * Exod. 19.7 gave him commandments before his face even the law of life and knowledge that he might teach Jacob his covenants and Israel his judgements 6 He * Exod. 4.14 exalted Aaron an holy man like unto him even his brother of the tribe of Levi. 7 An everlasting covenant he made with him and gave him the priesthood among the people † Gr. he blessed he beautified him with comely ornaments and clothed him with a robe of glory 8 He put upon him perfect glory and strengthned him with † Gr. vessels or instruments rich garments with breeches with a long robe and the ephod 9 And he compassed him with pomegranates and with many golden bells round about that as he went there might be a * Exod. 28.35 sound and a noise made that might be heard in the temple for a memorial to the children of his people 10 With an holy garment with gold and blue silk and purple the work of the embroiderer with a breast-plate of judgement and with Urim and Thummim 11 With twisted scarlet the work of the cunning workman with precious stones graven like seals and set in gold the work of the jeweller with a writing engraved for a memorial after the number of the tribes of Israel 12 He set a crown of gold upon the mitre wherein was engraved Holiness an ornament of honour a costly work the desires of the eyes goodly and beautiful 13 Before him there were none such neither did ever any stranger put them on but onely his children and his childrens children perpetually 14 Their sacrifices shall be wholly consumed every day twice continually 15 Moses consecrated him and anointed him with holy oyl this was appointed unto him by an everlasting covenant and to his seed so long as the heavens should remain that they should minister unto him and execute the office of the priest-hood and bless the people in his name 16 He chose him out of all men living to offer sacrifices to the Lord incense and a sweet savour for a memorial to make reconciliation for his people 17 * Deut. 17.10 21.5 He gave unto him his commandments and authority in the statutes of judgements that he should teach Jacob the testimonies and inform Israel in his laws 18 * Numb 16.1 Strangers conspired together against him and maligned him in the wilderness even the men that were of Dathans and Abirons side and the congregation of Core with fury and wrath 19 This the Lord saw and it displeased him and in his wrathful indignation were they consumed he did wonders upon them to consume them with the fiery flame 20 * Numb 17.8 But he made Aaron more honourable and gave him an heritage and divided unto him the first-fruits of the increase especially he prepared bread in abundance 21 For they did eat of the sacrifices of the Lord which he gave unto him and his seed 22 * Deut 12.12 18.1 2. Howbeit in the land of the people he had no inheritance neither had he any portion among the people for the Lord himself is his portion and inheritance 23 * Num. 25.11 12 13. 1 Mac. 2.54 The third in glory is Phinees the son of Eleazar because he had zeal in the fear of the Lord and stood up with good courage of heart when the people were turned back and made reconciliation for Israel 24 Therefore was there a covenant of peace made with him that he should be the chief of the sanctuary and of his people and that he and his posterity should have the dignity of the priesthood for ever 25 According to the covenant made with David son of Jesse of the tribe of Juda that the inheritance of the king should be to his posterity alone so the inheritance of Aaron should also be unto his seed 26 God give you wisdom in your heart to judge his people in righteousness that their good things be not abolished and that their glory may endure for ever CHAP. XLVI 1 The praise of Joshua 9 of Caleb 13 of Samuel JEsus * Numb 27.18 Deut. 34 9 Josh 1.2 12.7 the son of Nave was valiant in the wars and was the successour of Moses in prophesies who according to his name was made great for the saving of the elect of God and taking vengeance of the enemies that rose up against them that he might set Israel in their inheritance 2 How great glory gat he when he
did lift up his hands and stretched out his sword against the cities 3 Who before him so stood to it for the Lord himself brought his enemies unto him 4 * Josh 10.12 13 14. Did not the sun go back by his means and was not one day as long as two 5 He called upon the most high Lord when the enemies preassed upon him on every side and the great Lord heard him 6 And with hailstones of mighty power he made the battel to fall violently upon the nations and in the descent of Bethoron he destroyed them that resisted that the nations might know all their strength because he fought in the sight of the Lord and he followed the mighty One 7 In the time of Moses also he did a work of mercy he and Caleb the son of Jephunne in that they withstood the congregation and withheld the people from sin and appeased the wicked murmuring 8 * Numb 26.65 Deut. 1.35 36. Solomon reigned in a peaceable time and was honoured for God made all quiet round about him that he might build an house in his name and prepare his sanctuary for ever 14 * 1 King 2.29 30. How wise wast thou in thy youth and as a floud filled with understanding 15 Thy soul covered the whole earth and thou filledst it with dark parables 16 Thy name went far unto the islands and for thy peace thou wast beloved 17 * 1 King 4.31 32. But the Lord will never leave off his mercy neither shall any of his works perish neither will he abolish the posterity of his elect and the seed of him that loveth him he will not take away wherefore he gave a remnant unto Jacob and out of him a root unto David 23 Thus rested Solomon with his fathers and of his seed he left behinde him Roboam even the foolishness of the people and one that had no understanding who * 1 Kin. 12.10 11 13 14. turned away the people through his counsel There was also Jeroboam the son of Nebat who * 1 King 12.28 30. caused Israel to sin and shewed Ephraim the way of sin 24 And their sins were multiplied exceedingly that they were driven out of the land 25 For they sought out all wickedness till the vengeance came upon them CHAP.
