for_o r._n a._n 1647._o a_o letter_n from_o the_o army_n to_o all_o the_o honest_a seaman_n of_o england_n honour_a and_o dear_a friend_n the_o great_a design_n of_o our_o enemy_n be_v to_o divide_v and_o so_o to_o destroy_v we_o conceive_v it_o the_o main_a business_n of_o friend_n to_o unite_v and_o so_o to_o spoil_v that_o design_n now_o the_o way_n that_o be_v at_o this_o day_n take_v to_o divide_v be_v misrepresentation_n of_o person_n and_o action_n especial_o of_o we_o and_o we_o to_o the_o kingdom_n which_o that_o we_o may_v prevent_v we_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o inform_v you_o our_o noble_a and_o faithful_a friend_n of_o the_o state_n of_o thing_n as_o follow_v some_o five_o year_n since_o we_o by_o land_n and_o you_o by_o sea_n upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o apparent_a danger_n to_o the_o kingdom_n be_v invite_v to_o put_v ourselves_o into_o a_o posture_n of_o defence_n for_o the_o prevent_n and_o suppress_v of_o that_o power_n then_o rise_v which_o threaten_v the_o kingdom_n ruin_n for_o the_o avoid_n of_o which_o at_o present_a and_o settle_v a_o establishment_n for_o the_o future_a of_o all_o the_o freeborn_a people_n of_o england_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o their_o just_a right_n and_o privilege_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o end_n of_o our_o take_n up_o of_o arm_n we_o go_v with_o cheerfulness_n to_o the_o work_n and_o after_o many_o a_o sore_a encounter_n that_o you_o and_o we_o have_v have_v by_o sea_n and_o land_n at_o last_o by_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n come_v to_o the_o end_n of_o our_o work_n hope_v now_o after_o such_o a_o long_a and_o weary_a journey_n to_o have_v take_v up_o our_o rest_n and_o have_v set_v down_o quiet_o under_o our_o vine_n and_o with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o kingdom_n to_o have_v enjoy_v the_o fruit_n of_o our_o sore_a travel_n but_o contrary_a to_o our_o expectation_n and_o to_o the_o amazement_n and_o sadden_v of_o our_o spirit_n we_o find_v ourselves_o in_o as_o bad_a or_o worse_a condition_n now_o then_o former_o be_v deny_v and_o deprive_v of_o that_o undoubted_a right_n and_o privilege_n which_o the_o subject_n of_o england_n in_o the_o worst_a of_o time_n hardly_o ever_o be_v viz._n petition_v nay_o not_o only_o deny_v of_o but_o declare_v against_o as_o enemy_n for_o make_v use_n of_o those_o mean_n we_o be_v direct_v to_o in_o case_n of_o grievance_n and_o so_o we_o be_v now_o make_v complete_o miserable_a when_o we_o see_v this_o we_o know_v who_o hand_n be_v in_o it_o namely_o that_o here_o be_v the_o same_o person_n and_o principle_n work_v our_o ruin_n as_o former_o only_o in_o another_o form_n before_o by_o power_n and_o open_a hostility_n and_o now_o by_o craft_n and_o policy_n which_o cause_v we_o to_o draw_v up_o a_o vindication_n of_o the_o aforesaid_a intend_a petition_n yet_o notwithstanding_o our_o vindication_n we_o still_o lie_v under_o a_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n as_o enemy_n to_o the_o state_n then_o we_o draw_v up_o a_o letter_n to_o the_o general_n the_o lieutenant-generall_n and_o the_o major-generall_n in_o which_o be_v lay_v open_a the_o sad_a condition_n how_o near_a ruin_n and_o destruction_n we_o be_v and_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o as_o we_o apprehend_v and_o this_o we_o do_v to_o incite_v they_o to_o improve_v all_o the_o interest_n they_o have_v in_o or_o with_o any_o for_o we_o to_o prevent_v the_o ensue_a destruction_n especial_o since_o we_o can_v not_o be_v hear_v in_o our_o petition_n but_o this_o letter_n be_v conceive_v to_o be_v of_o dangerous_a consequence_n and_o so_o present_v to_o the_o house_n where_o after_o some_o debate_n the_o result_v be_v to_o send_v down_o commissioner_n to_o the_o army_n to_o take_v a_o view_n of_o the_o distemper_n report_v to_o be_v in_o it_o and_o to_o receive_v their_o grievance_n and_o present_v they_o to_o the_o house_n this_o a_o little_a revive_v we_o hope_v we_o shall_v have_v they_o hear_v and_o redress_v but_o sudden_o after_o the_o receive_n of_o they_o without_o the_o full_a redress_v of_o any_o one_o of_o they_o we_o be_v vote_v to_o be_v disband_v piecemeal_o apart_o one_o regiment_n from_o another_o so_o as_o never_o any_o faithful_a army_n be_v be_v mark_v out_o for_o destruction_n want_v nothing_o but_o disband_v to_o hasten_v execution_n hear_v of_o this_o we_o draw_v up_o a_o petition_n to_o our_o general_n to_o have_v a_o rendezvouz_n at_o which_o we_o may_v advise_v what_o be_v best_a to_o be_v do_v for_o our_o own_o and_o the_o kingdom_n safety_n in_o this_o case_n and_o there_o enter_v into_o a_o contract_n a_o copy_n of_o which_o we_o have_v here_o send_v you_o a_o solemn_a engagement_n of_o the_o army_n under_o the_o command_n of_o his_o excellency_n sir_n thomas_n fairfax_n read_v assent_v unto_o and_o subscribe_v by_o all_o officer_n and_o soldier_n of_o the_o several_a regiment_n at_o the_o general_a rendezvouz_n near_o newmarket_n on_o the_o five_o of_o june_n 1647._o whereas_o upon_o the_o petition_n intend_v and_o agree_v upon_o in_o the_o army_n in_o march_n last_o to_o have_v be_v present_v to_o the_o general_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o our_o due_a and_o necessary_a concernment_n as_o soldier_n the_o honourable_a house_n of_o commons_o be_v unreasonable_o prepossess_v with_o a_o copy_n thereof_o and_o as_o by_o the_o sequel_n we_o suppose_v with_o some_o strange_a misrepresentation_n of_o the_o carriage_n and_o intention_n of_o the_o same_o be_v induce_v to_o send_v down_o a_o order_n for_o surpress_v the_o petition_n and_o within_o two_o or_o three_o day_n after_o upon_o further_a misinformation_n and_o scandalous_a suggestion_n of_o the_o like_a or_o worse_a nature_n and_o by_o the_o indirect_a practice_n of_o some_o malicious_a and_o mischievous_a person_n as_o we_o suppose_v surprise_v for_o other_o wise_a abuse_v the_o parliament_n a_o declaration_n be_v publish_v in_o the_o name_n of_o both_o house_n high_o censure_v the_o say_a petition_n and_o declare_v the_o petitioner_n if_o they_o shall_v proceed_v thereupon_o no_o less_o than_o enemy_n to_o the_o state_n and_o disturber_n of_o the_o public_a peace_n and_o whereas_o at_o the_o same_o time_n and_o since_o divers_a eminent_a officer_n of_o the_o army_n have_v be_v bring_v into_o question_n and_o trouble_v about_o the_o say_a petition_n whereby_o both_o they_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o officer_n be_v disable_v or_o discourage_v for_o the_o time_n from_o further_a act_v or_o appear_v therein_o on_o the_o soldier_n behalf_n and_o whereas_o by_o the_o aforesaid_a proceed_n and_o the_o effect_n thereof_o the_o soldier_n of_o this_o army_n find_v themselves_o so_o stop_v in_o their_o due_n and_o regular_a way_n of_o make_v know_v their_o just_a greivance_n and_o desire_n to_o and_o by_o their_o officer_n be_v enforce_v to_o a_o unusual_a but_o in_o that_o case_n necessary_a way_n of_o correspondence_n and_o agreement_n among_o themselves_o to_o choose_v out_o of_o the_o several_a troop_n and_o company_n several_a man_n and_o those_o out_o of_o their_o whole_a number_n to_o choose_v two_o or_o more_o for_o each_o regiment_n to_o act_v in_o the_o name_n and_o behalf_n of_o the_o whole_a soldiery_n of_o the_o respective_a regiment_n troop_n and_o company_n in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o their_o right_n and_o desire_n in_o the_o say_a petition_n as_o also_o of_o their_o just_a vindication_n and_o writing_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o aforesaid_a proceed_n upon_o and_o against_o the_o same_o who_o have_v according_o act_v and_o do_v many_o thing_n to_o those_o end_n all_o which_o the_o soldier_n do_v then_o approve_v as_o their_o own_o act_n and_o whereas_o afterward_o upon_o the_o sudden_a send_v down_o of_o field-marshal_a skippon_n and_o those_o other_o officer_n of_o the_o army_n that_o be_v member_n of_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o to_o quiet_a distemper_n in_o the_o army_n fresh_a hope_n be_v conceive_v of_o have_v our_o desire_n again_o admit_v to_o be_v make_v know_v and_o consider_v in_o a_o regular_a way_n and_o without_o such_o misrepresentation_n as_o former_o the_o officer_n and_o soldier_n of_o the_o
