and_o friend_n fail_v and_o all_o seem_v to_o be_v go_v yet_o he_o have_v a_o better_a and_o more_o endure_a substance_n and_o a_o inheritance_n in_o another_o world_n that_o fade_v not_o away_o and_o this_o be_v that_o whereby_o he_o sustain_v and_o support_v and_o keep_v up_o himself_o in_o the_o worst_a condition_n and_o time_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v how_o and_o where_o god_n give_v this_o quietness_n which_o we_o speak_v of_o none_o can_v make_v trouble_n but_o to_o make_v this_o point_n clear_a unto_o we_o it_o may_v be_v here_o perhaps_o object_v that_o this_o be_v contrary_n to_o experience_n itself_o for_o asmuch_o as_o even_o the_o godly_a themselves_o be_v sometime_o under_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n here_o in_o this_o world_n notwithstanding_o their_o inward_a peace_n and_o reconcilement_n which_o be_v draw_v betwixt_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o if_o we_o mean_v by_o trouble_n a_o afflict_a and_o trouble_a condition_n we_o do_v not_o deny_v it_o the_o child_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o other_o be_v subject_a and_o liable_a hereunto_o while_o they_o carry_v flesh_n about_o they_o yea_o they_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n subject_a hereunto_o above_o all_o other_o man_n beside_o there_o be_v no_o people_n which_o have_v great_a trouble_n upon_o they_o oftentimes_o then_o god_n dear_a servant_n but_o this_o be_v that_o which_o then_o we_o say_v that_o god_n do_v sweet_o bear_v they_o up_o in_o this_o and_o assist_v they_o and_o enable_v they_o to_o endure_v they_o so_o that_o though_o there_o be_v more_o trouble_n upon_o their_o outward_a condition_n than_o it_o may_v be_v upon_o other_o man_n yet_o there_o be_v less_o trouble_n and_o perplexity_n in_o their_o spirit_n and_o mind_n as_o arise_v from_o this_o condition_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o seem_v chief_o here_o to_o be_v intend_v and_o point_v out_o unto_o we_o when_o he_o give_v quietness_n who_o then_o can_v make_v trouble_n not_o as_o if_o none_o shall_v thus_o assault_v and_o endeavour_v to_o trouble_v but_o who_o can_v make_v trouble_n that_o be_v who_o can_v actual_o trouble_v so_o as_o to_o take_v away_o the_o fruit_n of_o this_o peace_n second_o we_o do_v also_o acknowledge_v that_o god_n child_n which_o have_v this_o peace_n in_o they_o have_v not_o only_o trouble_v sometime_o in_o their_o condition_n but_o likewise_o as_o well_o in_o their_o spirit_n but_o then_o he_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o this_o peace_n be_v less_o vigorous_a in_o they_o or_o as_o they_o live_v in_o the_o power_n and_o efficacy_n of_o spiritual_a comfort_n it_o be_v true_a that_o where_o god_n give_v quietness_n there_o be_v also_o a_o freedom_n from_o trouble_n but_o because_o he_o give_v it_o imperfect_o there_o be_v therefore_o but_o a_o partial_a freedom_n and_o exemption_n of_o we_o from_o it_o the_o greatness_n of_o our_o tranquillity_n be_v according_a to_o the_o strength_n of_o our_o assurance_n where_o we_o have_v great_a and_o strong_a assurance_n we_o have_v the_o less_o trouble_n and_o then_o i_o say_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o we_o live_v in_o the_o power_n of_o spiritual_a comfort_n when_o god_n give_v we_o inward_a peace_n and_o quietness_n and_o we_o do_v not_o improve_v it_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n if_o we_o have_v less_o benefit_n by_o it_o there_o be_v many_o which_o be_v guilty_a of_o that_o infirmity_n which_o eliphaz_n fasten_v upon_o job_n that_o the_o consolation_n of_o god_n be_v small_a with_o they_o god_n will_v comfort_v they_o and_o they_o will_v not_o be_v comfort_v and_o if_o so_o it_o be_v then_o no_o wonder_n if_o they_o have_v trouble_v and_o perplexity_n indeed_o it_o may_v be_v better_o with_o they_o in_o these_o case_n if_o the_o fault_n be_v not_o their_o own_o the_o point_n be_v thus_o clear_v and_o enlarge_v let_v we_o make_v some_o use_n of_o it_o and_o first_o if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o no_o condition_n shall_v be_v troublesome_a to_o that_o person_n which_o be_v in_o favour_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n we_o see_v then_o how_o near_o it_o concern_v we_o to_o labour_n and_o endeavour_v after_o this_o especial_o in_o these_o sad_a time_n which_o at_o this_o present_a be_v fall_v upon_o we_o every_o one_o as_o near_o as_o they_o can_v be_v will_v be_v free_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o time_n and_o be_v set_v in_o such_o a_o condition_n desirous_a of_o variety_n that_o no_o one_o duty_n may_v be_v tedious_a to_o we_o we_o have_v many_o duty_n to_o employ_v ourselves_o in_o and_o to_o exercise_v ourselves_o with_o and_o that_o be_v a_o three_o explication_n of_o the_o pleasantness_n which_o be_v in_o godliness_n viz._n from_o the_o duty_n and_o exercise_n of_o religion_n now_o the_o point_n thus_o explain_v unto_o we_o may_v be_v fruitful_a in_o these_o follow_a application_n namely_o first_o as_o it_o serve_v to_o confute_v the_o fond_a conceit_n of_o man_n of_o the_o world_n which_o they_o have_v concern_v godliness_n and_o the_o way_n of_o piety_n there_o be_v many_o which_o be_v of_o this_o opinion_n that_o religion_n be_v a_o melancholy_a condition_n that_o it_o make_v man_n pensive_a and_o sad_a and_o have_v no_o pleasure_n nor_o delight_n in_o it_o at_o all_o and_o hence_o they_o come_v to_o be_v discourage_v from_o the_o follow_v and_o profess_v of_o it_o and_o be_v apt_a to_o discourage_v other_o likewise_o from_o follow_v it_o to_o but_o this_o proceed_v from_o a_o plain_a mistake_n and_o ignorance_n and_o erroniousness_n of_o judgement_n in_o they_o for_o indeed_o it_o be_v quite_o contrary_a as_o it_o be_v here_o express_v to_o we_o in_o this_o text._n her_o way_n be_v way_n of_o pleasantness_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sweet_a delight_n and_o refreshment_n in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n to_o those_o which_o walk_v in_o they_o and_o what_o ever_o be_v pleasant_a in_o any_o way_n the_o same_o be_v to_o be_v find_v here_o in_o these_o first_o godly_a prospect_n they_o be_v one_o thing_n which_o make_v a_o way_n pleasant_a green_a field_n and_o flow_a river_n and_o the_o like_a to_o walk_v by_o such_o way_n as_o these_o it_o carry_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n with_o it_o why_o thus_o now_o do_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n set_v forth_o to_o we_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n psal_n 23.2.3_o he_o make_v i_o to_o lie_v down_o in_o green_a pasture_n he_o lead_v i_o beside_o the_o still_a water_n he_o restore_v my_o soul_n he_o lead_v i_o in_o the_o path_n of_o righteousness_n for_o his_o name_n sake_n where_o the_o latter_a be_v a_o explication_n of_o the_o former_a the_o green_a pasture_n and_o still_o water_n be_v not_o other_o than_o the_o path_n of_o righteousness_n and_o the_o ordinance_n which_o lead_v thereunto_o second_o another_o pleasantness_n of_o way_n consist_v in_o their_o lightsomeness_n to_o walk_v in_o dark_a way_n in_o holes_n and_o wood_n and_o the_o like_a it_o carry_v love_v thou_o give_v instruction_n to_o a_o wise_a man_n and_o he_o will_v be_v yet_o wise_a and_o here_o now_o add_v if_o thou_o be_v wise_a thou_o shall_v be_v wise_a for_o thyself_o he_o do_v not_o say_v if_o thou_o hearne_v to_o reproof_n and_o good_a instruction_n though_o that_o he_o mean_v by_o it_o but_o if_o thou_o be_v wise_a hereby_o imply_v that_o so_o to_o do_v be_v a_o part_n of_o very_o great_a wisdom_n and_o so_o it_o be_v he_o that_o be_v a_o teachable_a man_n be_v a_o wise_a man_n he_o that_o have_v so_o much_o understanding_n in_o he_o as_o to_o give_v ear_n to_o good_a sundry_a place_n of_o it_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o instance_n in_o they_o we_o do_v frequent_o meet_v with_o in_o they_o almost_o in_o every_o page_n tend_v to_o this_o purpose_n not_o to_o stand_v upon_o this_o point_n which_o i_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o by_o the_o by_o this_o will_v appear_v to_o be_v so_o in_o these_o follow_a respect_n first_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o wisdom_n the_o law_n of_o god_n without_o any_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o the_o pure_a life_n of_o religion_n and_o spirituality_n of_o it_o that_o there_o be_v as_o good_a divinity_n sometime_o to_o be_v find_v in_o seneca_n or_o epictetus_n or_o autonius_n or_o aristotle_n ethic_n &_o the_o rest_n of_o such_o heathen_a writer_n as_o in_o most_o of_o these_o dissenter_n who_o as_o for_o the_o doctrinal_a part_n of_o religion_n they_o will_v reduce_v it_o all_o to_o natural_a reason_n and_o thereby_o destroy_v faith_n so_o for_o the_o practical_a part_n of_o religion_n they_o will_v consine_n it_o all_o to_o moral_a philosophy_n and_o thereby_o diminish_v obedience_n but_o such_o as_o these_o need_n no_o other_o than_o christ_n himself_o to_o be_v a_o counsellor_n of_o they_o rest_n as_o be_v of_o great_a importance_n and_o concernment_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o which_o be_v this_o at_o present_a which_o we_o now_o mention_v i_o say_v it_o and_o i_o say_v it_o peremptory_o
