here_o engage_v in_o the_o great_a work_n of_o man_n salvation_n it_o be_v first_o speak_v by_o our_o lord_n god_n also_o bear_v they_o witness_n and_o that_o with_o divers_a miracle_n and_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o that_o not_o only_o the_o first_o revelation_n be_v from_o god_n but_o the_o testimony_n to_o confirm_v that_o it_o be_v so_o be_v from_o he_o too_o there_o be_v never_o so_o clear_a a_o attestation_n of_o any_o divine_a truth_n as_o be_v of_o the_o gospel_n from_o whence_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o foundation_n whereon_o our_o faith_n stand_v be_v nothing_o short_a of_o a_o divine_a testimony_n which_o god_n give_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o revelation_n of_o his_o will_n so_o vain_a be_v the_o cavil_n of_o those_o who_o say_v we_o have_v nothing_o but_o mere_a probability_n for_o our_o faith_n and_o do_v interpret_v that_o manner_n of_o proof_n which_o matter_n of_o fact_n be_v capable_a of_o in_o a_o sense_n derogatory_n to_o the_o firmness_n of_o our_o christian_n faith_n as_o though_o we_o make_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n a_o paraclete_n or_o advocate_n in_o the_o worst_a sense_n which_o may_v as_o well_o plead_v a_o bad_a as_o a_o good_a cause_n no_o we_o acknowledge_v that_o god_n himself_o do_v bear_v witness_n to_o that_o doctrine_n deliver_v by_o our_o lord_n and_o that_o in_o a_o moâ—t_a signal_n and_o effectual_a manner_n for_o the_o conviction_n of_o the_o world_n by_o those_o demonâ—â—rations_n of_o a_o divine_a power_n which_o accompany_v the_o first_o preacher_n of_o salvation_n by_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ._n so_o the_o most_o prevail_a motive_n to_o persuade_v they_o to_o accept_v of_o these_o offer_n of_o salvation_n there_o be_v two_o passion_n which_o be_v the_o great_a hinge_n of_o government_n viz._n man_n hope_n and_o fear_n and_o therefore_o all_o law_n have_v have_v their_o sanction_n suitable_a to_o these_o two_o in_o reward_n and_o punishment_n now_o there_o be_v never_o any_o reward_n which_o give_v great_a encouragement_n to_o hope_n never_o any_o punishment_n which_o make_v fear_n more_o reasonable_a than_o those_o be_v which_o the_o gospel_n propose_v will_v ever_o that_o man_n be_v good_a who_o the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n will_v not_o make_v so_o or_o will_v ever_o that_o man_n leave_v his_o sin_n who_o the_o fear_n of_o hell_n will_v not_o make_v to_o do_v it_o what_o other_o argument_n can_v we_o imagine_v shall_v ever_o have_v that_o power_n and_o influence_n on_o mankind_n which_o these_o may_v be_v reasonable_o suppose_v to_o have_v will_v you_o have_v god_n alter_v the_o method_n of_o his_o providence_n and_o give_v his_o reward_n and_o punishment_n in_o this_o life_n but_o if_o so_o what_o exercise_n will_v there_o be_v of_o the_o patience_n forbearance_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o wicked_a man_n must_v he_o do_v it_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o man_n sin_n then_o he_o will_v never_o try_v whether_o they_o will_v repent_v and_o grow_v better_o or_o must_v he_o stay_v till_o they_o have_v come_v to_o such_o a_o height_n of_o sin_n then_o no_o person_n will_v have_v cause_n to_o fear_v he_o but_o such_o who_o be_v arrive_v which_o it_o sometime_o call_v 25.41_o everlasting_a fire_n sometime_o 9.44_o the_o worm_n that_o never_o die_v sometime_o 1.10_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v sometime_o 1.9_o everlasting_a destruction_n all_o enough_o to_o fill_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n with_o horror_n at_o the_o apprehension_n and_o what_o then_o will_v the_o undergo_a it_o do_v thence_o our_o saviour_n reasonable_o bid_v man_n the_o heaven_n but_o what_o the_o flashing_n of_o lightning_n give_v can_v we_o imagine_v ourselves_o at_o a_o convenient_a distance_n to_o behold_v the_o eruption_n of_o a_o burn_a mountain_n such_o as_o aetna_n and_o vesuvius_n be_v when_o the_o earth_n about_o it_o tremble_v and_o groan_n the_o sea_n foam_v and_o rage_n and_o the_o bowel_n of_o the_o mountain_n roar_v through_o impatience_n of_o cast_v forth_o its_o burden_n and_o at_o last_o give_v itself_o ease_n by_o send_v up_o a_o mixture_n of_o flame_n and_o ash_n and_o smoke_n and_o a_o flood_n of_o fire_n spread_v far_o and_o destroy_v wherever_o it_o run_v yet_o even_o this_o though_o it_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o put_v man_n in_o apprehension_n and_o fear_n of_o this_o great_a day_n fall_v very_o far_o short_a of_o the_o terror_n of_o it_o can_v we_o yet_o far_o suppose_n that_o at_o the_o same_o time_n we_o can_v see_v fire_n and_o brimstone_n rain_v from_o heaven_n on_o sodom_n and_o gomorrah_n the_o earth_n open_v to_o devour_v corah_n and_o his_o company_n belshazzar_n tremble_v at_o the_o hand-writing_n against_o the_o wall_n and_o the_o jew_n destroy_v themselves_o in_o the_o fire_n of_o their_o temple_n and_o city_n this_o may_v somewhat_o high_o advance_v our_o imagination_n of_o the_o horror_n of_o the_o world_n conflagration_n but_o yet_o we_o can_v reach_v the_o greatness_n of_o it_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o heaven_n and_o the_o earth_n which_o be_v now_o be_v keep_v in_o store_n say_v the_o apostle_n 3.7_o reserve_v unto_o fire_n against_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o perdition_n of_o ungodly_a man_n even_o those_o heaven_n who_o beauty_n and_o order_n and_o motion_n and_o influence_n we_o now_o admire_v and_o that_o earth_n who_o fruitful_a womb_n and_o rich_o adorn_v they_o pierce_v his_o side_n which_o only_o touch_v our_o skin_n we_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o complain_v of_o the_o bitterness_n of_o that_o cup_n which_o he_o have_v drink_v off_o the_o dregs_o of_o already_o we_o lament_v over_o the_o ruin_n of_o a_o city_n and_o be_v revive_v with_o any_o hope_n of_o see_v it_o rise_v out_o of_o the_o dust_n but_o christ_n see_v the_o ruin_n that_o sin_v
