believer_n who_o be_v assure_v of_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n to_o he_o ought_v yet_o to_o fear_v he_o as_o a_o consume_a fire_n and_o first_o the_o consideration_n of_o that_o mighty_a and_o dreadful_a power_n that_o god_n put_v forth_o in_o the_o punish_n and_o afflict_v of_o the_o damn_a damn_a 1._o because_o of_o that_o power_n that_o he_o put_v forth_o in_o punish_v of_o the_o damn_a power_n of_o his_o wrath_n to_o their_o everlasting_a destruction_n it_o be_v from_o this_o power_n of_o god_n that_o christ_n himself_o enforce_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n mat._n 20.28_o fear_v he_o who_o be_v able_a to_o destroy_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n in_o hell_n though_o god_n shall_v assure_v you_o that_o he_o will_v never_o destroy_v you_o in_o hell_n yet_o because_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o therefore_o you_o shall_v fear_v he_o severity_n 2._o because_o of_o god_n wrath_n and_o severity_n second_o this_o fear_n may_v arise_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n who_o be_v assure_v of_o the_o tender_a love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o himself_o yet_o when_o he_o sad_o consider_v that_o wrath_n and_o indignation_n that_o be_v in_o
god_n against_o the_o damn_a when_o he_o see_v his_o heavenly_a father_n angry_a though_o it_o be_v not_o against_o he_o yet_o this_o must_v needs_o strike_v a_o reverential_a fear_n and_o awe_o into_o his_o soul_n now_o this_o reverential_a fear_n will_v remain_v for_o ever_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n endure_v for_o ever_o yea_o when_o the_o child_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v make_v for_o ever_o happy_a in_o heaven_n yet_o this_o fear_n shall_v be_v then_o increase_v and_o not_o at_o all_o diminish_v the_o more_o they_o see_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o wrath_n and_o severity_n of_o god_n execute_v upon_o the_o damn_a the_o more_o they_o fear_v and_o reverence_v this_o powerful_a this_o sin-revenging_a god_n and_o this_o kind_n of_o fear_n be_v no_o prejudice_n to_o their_o full_a assurance_n and_o joy_n nor_o shall_v it_o be_v prejudicial_a to_o their_o complete_a and_o perfect_a happiness_n in_o heaven_n three_o sin_n 3._o because_o of_o the_o desert_n of_o their_o sin_n the_o consideration_n of_o the_o desert_n of_o sin_n shall_v cause_v a_o holy_a fear_n of_o god_n even_o in_o those_o that_o be_v full_o assure_v of_o his_o love_n when_o a_o child_n of_o god_n look_v upon_o sin_n and_o see_v what_o wrath_n and_o torment_n he_o have_v deserve_v by_o it_o though_o he_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o he_o be_v pardon_v yet_o it_o can_v but_o fright_v he_o to_o consider_v that_o he_o shall_v deserve_v so_o great_a condemnation_n as_o a_o malefactor_n though_o he_o be_v pardon_v yet_o if_o he_o be_v present_a in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n some_o he_o hold_v in_o the_o left_a hand_n of_o his_o common_a providence_n and_o other_o of_o they_o he_o hold_v in_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o his_o special_a grace_n those_o who_o he_o hold_v only_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o providence_n he_o let_v we_o fall_v and_o drop_v one_o after_o another_o into_o hell_n where_o they_o be_v swallow_v up_o and_o lose_v eternal_o those_o that_o he_o hold_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o grace_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v impossible_a upon_o that_o supposition_n that_o ever_o they_o shall_v fall_v into_o hell_n yet_o when_o they_o think_v o_o if_o we_o be_v not_o uphold_v yea_o how_o possible_a it_o be_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o have_v be_v uphold_v this_o apprehension_n must_v needs_o strike_v they_o with_o fear_n and_o terror_n though_o not_o with_o a_o perplex_v doubtfulness_n concern_v the_o safety_n of_o their_o condition_n yet_o with_o a_o doubtful_a apprehension_n of_o the_o possibility_n of_o what_o will_v have_v be_v their_o condition_n if_o god_n have_v hold_v they_o over_o hell_n only_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o common_a providence_n narrow_o 5._o because_o they_o escape_v very_o narrow_o five_o consider_v though_o you_o be_v assure_v that_o you_o shall_v escape_v this_o eternal_a death_n yet_o it_o will_v be_v a_o narrow_a escape_n and_o that_o may_v cause_v fear_n it_o will_v be_v a_o escape_n with_o very_a much_o labour_n and_o difficulty_n though_o you_o be_v hold_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n yet_o he_o lead_v you_o along_o to_o heaven_n by_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n and_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o cause_n fear_v our_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v so_o straight_o the_o rub_n in_o it_o so_o many_o our_o fall_n by_o they_o so_o frequent_a our_o enemy_n so_o potent_a that_o though_o our_o assurance_n may_v make_v we_o not_o to_o fear_v but_o that_o in_o the_o end_n we_o shall_v escape_v hell_n yet_o it_o will_v be_v high_a presumption_n for_o we_o not_o to_o fear_v how_o we_o may_v escape_v it_o the_o apostle_n bring_v in_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o elect_a themselves_o with_o a_o scarce_o 1_o pet._n 4.18_o 4.18_o 1_o pet._n 4.18_o if_o the_o very_o difficult_a and_o laborious_a and_o that_o be_v just_a cause_n of_o fear_n well_o then_o brief_o to_o apply_v it_o in_o one_o word_n though_o you_o be_v assure_v through_o faith_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o your_o sin_n yet_o tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o that_o wrath_n and_o hell_n that_o you_o have_v escape_v it_o be_v observe_v that_o those_o be_v the_o fix_a star_n that_o tremble_v most_o so_o christian_n who_o be_v fix_v immovable_o in_o the_o unchangeable_a love_n of_o god_n as_o star_n fix_v to_o the_o heaven_n in_o their_o orb_n yet_o they_o be_v most_o of_o all_o in_o trepidation_n and_o tremble_v when_o they_o reflect_v upon_o themselves_o and_o think_v that_o instead_o of_o be_v star_n in_o heaven_n they_o may_v have_v be_v firebrand_n in_o hell_n those_o to_o i_o be_v suspicious_a professor_n that_o make_v a_o great_a blaze_n with_o their_o joy_n in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o their_o right_n to_o heaven_n but_o never_o tremble_v under_o the_o apprehension_n of_o their_o desert_n of_o hell_n he_o what_o there_o be_v in_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n as_o our_o god_n that_o may_v cause_v we_o to_o fear_v he_o have_v show_v you_o upon_o accompany_v with_o some_o degree_n of_o enmity_n and_o hatred_n against_o god_n it_o be_v natural_a for_o we_o to_o hate_v those_o that_o we_o fear_v with_o a_o slavish_a fear_n he_o that_o think_v god_n will_v certain_o punish_v he_o must_v out_o of_o self-love_n need_v be_v provoke_v to_o hate_n god_n hence_o be_v it_o that_o the_o soul_n that_o lie_v under_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n to_o sin_n sin_n 1._o as_o to_o sin_n slavish_a fear_n dread_v nothing_o but_o hell_n and_o punishment_n but_o godly_a fear_n dread_v sin_n itself_o the_o one_o fear_n only_o to_o burn_v the_o other_o fear_n for_o to_o sin_n as_o austin_n say_v well_o he_o fear_v hell_n only_o who_o fear_v not_o to_o sin_n but_o fear_n to_o burn_v but_o he_o fear_v to_o sin_n who_o hate_v sin_n as_o he_o will_v slavish_a fear_n of_o god_n make_v man_n to_o consult_v how_o they_o may_v fly_v from_o god_n as_o adam_n do_v when_o he_o have_v bring_v gild_n upon_o his_o conscience_n by_o his_o fall_n he_o hide_v himself_o from_o god_n in_o the_o garden_n gild_n love_v not_o the_o presence_n of_o its_o judge_n but_o godly_a fear_n be_v still_o exciting_a the_o soul_n to_o approach_v near_o to_o god_n in_o duty_n and_o therefore_o david_n say_v psal_n 5.7_o in_o thy_o fear_n will_v i_o worship_v towards_o thy_o holy_a temple_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n encourage_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o performance_n
