And they took the bullock which was given them and they dressed it and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon saying O Baal ‖ Or answer hear us But there was no voice nor any that ‖ Or heard answered And they ‖ Or leaped up and down at the altar leapt upon the altar which was made 27 And it came to pass at noon that Elijah mocked them and said Cry †Heb. with a great voice aloud for he is a god either ‖ Or he meditateth he is talking or he †Heb. hath a pursuit is pursuing or he is in a journey or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked 28 And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancers till †Heb. poured out bloud upon them the bloud gushed out upon them 29 And it came to pass when mid-day was past and they prophesied until the time of the †Heb. ascâ—â—ding offering of the evening sacrifice that there was neither voice nor any to answer nor any †Heb. attention that regarded 30 And Elijah said unto all the people Come near unto me And all the people came near unto him and he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down 31 And Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob unto whom the word of the LORD came saying * Gen. 32.28 2 Kings 17.34 Israel shall be thy name 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD and he made a trench about the altar as great as would contain two measures of seed 33 And he put the wood in order and cut the bullock in pieces and laid him on the wood and said Fill four barrels with water and pour it on the burnt-sacrifice and on the wood 34 And he said Do it the second time And they did it the second time And he said Do it the third time And they did it the third time 35 And the water †Heb. went ran round about the altar and he filled the trench also with water 36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice that Elijah the prophet came near and said LORD God of Abraham Isaac and of Israel let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel and that I am thy servant and that I have done all these things at thy word 37 Hear me O LORD hear me that this people may know that thou art the LORD God and that thou hast turned their heart back again 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water that was in the trench 39 And when all the people saw it they sell on their faces and they said The LORD he is the God the LORD he is the God 40 And Elijah said unto them ‖ Or Apprehend Take the prophets of Baal let not one of them escape and they took them and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slew them there 41 ¶ And Elijah said unto Ahab Get thee up eat and drink for there is ‖ Or a sound of a noise of rain a sound of abundance of rain 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink and Elijah went up to the top of Carmel and he cast himself down upon the earth and put his face between his knees 43 And said to his servant Go up now look toward the sea And he went up and looked and said There is nothing And he said Go again seven times 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time that he said Behold there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea like a mans hand And he said Go up say unto Ahab †Heb. Tie or Binde Prepare thy chariot and get thee down that the rain stop thee not 45 And it came to pass in the mean while that the heaven was black with clouds and wind and there was a great rain And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel 46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah and he girded up his loyns and ran before Ahab †Heb. till thou come to Jezreel to the entrance of Jezreel CHAP. XIX 1 Elijah threatued by Jezebel fleeth to Beer-sheba 4 In the wilderness being weary of his life he is comforted by an angel 9 At Horeb God appeareth unto him sending him to anoint Hazael Jehu and Elisha 19 Elisha taking leave of his friends followeth Elijah ANd Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah saying So let the gods do to me and more also if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time 3 And when he saw that he arose and went for his life and came to Beer-sheba which belongeth to Judah and left his servant there 4 ¶ But he himself went a days journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a juniper-tree and he requested †Heb. for his life for himself that he might die and said It is enough now O LORD take away my life for I am not better then my fathers 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper-tree behold then an angel touched him and said unto him Arise and eat 6 And he looked and behold there was a cake baken on the coals and a cruse of water at his †Heb. bolster head and he did eat and drink and laid him down again 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time and touched him and said Arise and eat because the journey is too great for thee 8 And he arose and did eat and drink and went in the strength of that meat fourty days and fourty nights unto Horeb the mount of God 9 ¶ And he came thither unto a cave and lodged there and behold the word of the LORD came to him and he said unto him What doest thou here Elijah 10 And he said I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant thrown down thine altars and slain thy prophets with the sword and * Rom. 11 3. I even I onely am left and they seek my life to take it away 11 And he said Go forth and stand upon the mount before the LORD And behold the LORD passed by and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD but the LORD was not in the wind and after the wind an earthquake but the LORD was not in the earthquake 12 And after the earthquake a fire but the LORD was not in the fire and after the fire a still small voice 13 And it was so when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his

III. 1Vnder the type of Joshua the restauration of the church 8 Christ the Branch is promised ANd he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD and ‖ That is an adversary Satan standing at his right hand †Heb. to â—ebis adversary to resist him 2 And the LORD said unto Satan * Jude 9. The LORD rebuke thee O Satan even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee is not this a brand pluckt out of the fire 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and stood before the angel 4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him saying Take away the filthy garments from him And unto him he said Behold I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee and I will clothe thee with change of raiment 5 And I said Let them set a fair mitre upon his head so they set a fair mitre upon his head and clothed him with garments and the angel of the LORD stood by 6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua saying 7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts If thou wilt walk in my ways and if thou wilt keep my ‖ Or ordinance charge then thou shalt also judge my house and shalt also keep my courts and I will give thee †Heb. walks places to walk among these that stand by 8 Hear now O Joshua the high priest thou and thy fellows that sit before thee for they are †Heb. men of wonder men wondred at for behold I will bring forth my servant the * Isa 11.1 Jer. 23.5 and 33.15 Ch. 6.12 Luk. 1.78 BRANCH 9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua upon one stone shall be seven eyes behold I will engrave the graving thereof saith the LORD of hosts I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day 10 In that day saith the LORD of hosts shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig-tree CHAP. IV. 1 By the golden candlestick is foreshewed the good success of Zerubbabels foundation 11 By the two olive-trees the two anointed ones ANd the angel that talked with me came again and waked me as a man that is wakened out of his sleep 2 And said unto me What seest thou And I said I have looked and behold a candlestick all of gold †Heb. with her bowl with a bowl upon the top of it and his seven lamps thereon and ‖ Or seven several pipes to the lamps c. seven pipes to the seven lamps which were upon the top thereof 3 And two olive-trees by it one upon the right side of the bowl and the other upon the left side thereof 4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me saying What are these my lord 5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me Knowest thou not what these be And I said No my lord 6 Then he answered and spake unto me saying This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel saying Not by ‖ Or army might nor by power but by my spirit saith the LORD of hosts 7 Who art thou O great mountain before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain and he shall bring forth the head-stone thereof with shoutings crying Grace grace unto it 8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house his hands shall also finish it and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you 10 For who hath despised the day of small things ‖ Or sith the seven â—es of the LORD shall rejoyce for they shall rejoyce and shall see the †Heb. stone of tin plummet in the hand of Zerubhabel with those seven * Ch. 3.9 they are the eyes of the LORD which run to and fro through the whole earth 11 ¶ Then answered I and said unto him What are these two olive-trees upon the right side of the candlestick upon the left side thereof 12 And I answered again and said unto him What be these two olive-branches which †Heb. by the hand through the two golden pipes ‖ Or empty out of themselves oylinto the gold empty †Heb. the gold the golden oyl out of themselves 13 And he answered me and said Knowest thou not what these be And I said No my lord 14 Then said he These are the two †Heb. sons of oyl anointed ones that stand by the Lord of the whole earth CHAP. V. 1 By the flying roll is shewed the curse of theeves and swearers 5 By a woman pressed

XIII 1 They were not excused that worshipped any of Gods works 10 But most wretched are they that worship the works of mens â—ands SUrely vain are all men by nature who are ignorant of God and * Rom. 1.19 could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the work-master 2 * Deu. 4.19 17.3 But deemed either fire or wind or the swift air or the circle of the stars or the violent water or the lights of heaven to be the gods which govern the world 3 With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods let them know how much better the Lord of them is for the first authour of beauty hath created them 4 But if they were astonished at their power and vertue let them understand by them how much mightier he is that made them 5 For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen 6 But yet for this they are the less to be blamed for they peradventure err seeking God and desirous to finde him 7 For being * Rom. 1.21 conversant in his works they ‖ Or seek search him diligently and beleeve their sight because the things are beautiful that are seen 8 Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned 9 For if they were able to know so much that they could aim at the world how did they not sooner finde out the Lord thereof 10 But miserable are they and in dead things is their hope who called them gods which are the works of mens hands gold and silver to shew art in and resemblances of beasts or a stone good for nothing the work of an ancient hand 11 * If. 44.13 Now a ‖ Or timber-wright carpenter that felleth â—â—mber after he hath sawen down a tree meet for the purpose and take â—â—â—ff all the bark skilfully round about and hath wrought it handsomely and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of mans life 12 And after spending the ‖ Or chipâ— refuse of his work to dress his meat hath filled himself 13 And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use being a crooked piece of wood and full of knots hath carved it diligently when he had nothing else to do and formed it by the skill of his understanding and fashioned it to the image of a man 14 Or made it like some vile beast laying it over with vermilion and with paint colouring it red and covering every spot therein 15 And when he had made a convenient room for it set it in a wall and made it fast with iron 16 For he provided for it that it might not fall knowing that it was unable to help it self for it is an image and hath need of help 17 Then maketh he prayer for his goods for his wife and children and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life 18 For health he calleth upon that which is weak for life prayeth to that which is dead for aid humbly beseecheth †Gr. that hath no experience at all that which hath least means

IV. 1Vnter the type of a siege is shewed the time from the defection of Jeroboam to the captivity 9 By the provision of the siege is shewed the hardness of the famine THou also son of man take thee a tile and lay it before thee and pourtray upon it the city even Jerusalem 2 And lay siege against it and build a fort against it and cast a mount against it set the camp also against it and set ‖ Or chief leaders battering rams against it round about 3 Moreover take thou unto thee ‖ Or a flat plate or slice an iron pan and set it for a wall of iron between thee and the city and set thy face against it and it shall be besieged and thou shalt lay siege against it this shall be a signe to the house of Israel 4 Lie thou also upon thy left side and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon it thou shalt bear their iniquity 5 For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity according to the number of the days three hundred and ninety days * Nu. 14.34 so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel 6 And when thou hast accomplished them lie again on thy right side and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah fourty days I have appointed thee †Heb. a day for a year a day for a year each day for a year 7 Therefore thou shalt set thy face toward the siege of Jerusalem and thine arm shall be uncovered and thou shalt prophesie against it 8 And behold I will lay bands upon thee and thou shalt not turn thee †Heb. from thy side to thy side from one side to another till thou hast ended the days of thy siege 9 ¶ Take thou also unto thee wheat and barley and beans and lentiles and millet and ‖ Or spelt fitches and put them in one vessel and make thee bread thereof ascording to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon thy side three hundred and ninety days shalt thou eat thereof 10 And thy meat which thou shalt eat shall be by weight twenty shekels a day from time to time shalt thou eat it 11 Thou shalt drink also water by measure the sixth part of an hin from time to time shalt thou drink 12 And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man in their sight 13 And the LORD said Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles whither I will drive them 14 Then said I Ah Lord GOD behold my soul hath not been polluted for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of it self or is torn in pieces neither came there abominable flesh into my mouth 15 Then he said unto me Lo I have given thee cows dung for mans dung and thou shalt prepare thy bread therewith 16 Moreover he said unto me Son of man behold I will break the * Lev. 16.26 Ch. 5.16 14.13 staff of bread in Jerusalem and they shall eat bread by weight and with care and they shall drink water by measure and with astonishment 17 That they may want bread and water and be astonied one with another and consume away for their iniquity CHAP. V. 1Vnder the type of hair 5 is shewed the judgement of Jerusalem for their rebellion 12 by famine sword and dispersion ANd thou son of man take thee a sharp knife take thee a barbours rasour and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard then take thee balances to weigh and divide their hair 2 Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city when the days of the siege are fulfilled and thou shalt take a third part and smite about it with a knife and a third part thou shalt scatter in the wind and I will draw out a sword after them 3 Thou shalt also take thereof a few in number and binde them in thy †Heb. wings skirts 4 Then take of them again and cast them into the midst of the fire and burn them in the fire for thereof shall a fire come forth into all the house of Israel 5 ¶ Thus saith the Lord GOD This is Jerusalem I have set it

Wheresoever thou findest the dead †signing bury them take them and bury them and I will give thee the first place in my resurrection 24 Abide still O my people and take thy rest for thy quietness shall come 25 Nourish thy children O thou good nurse stablish their feet 26 As for the servants whom I have given thee there shall not one of them perish for I will require them from among thy number 27 Be not weary for when the day of trouble and heaviness cometh others shall weep and be sorrowful but thou shalt be merry and have abundance 28 The heathen shall envy thee but they shall be able to do nothing against thee saith the Lord. 29 My hands shall cover thee so that thy children shall not see hell 30 Be joyful O thou mother with thy children for I will deliver thee saith the Lord. 31 Remember thy children that sleep for I shall bring them out of the sides of the earth and shew mercy unto them for I am merciful saith the Lord Almighty 32 Embrace thy children until I come and ‖ Or preaâ—e shew mercy unto them for my wells run over and my grace shall not fail 33 I Esdras received a charge of the Lord upon the mount Oreb that I should go unto Israel but when I came unto then they set me at nought and despised the commandment of the Lord. 34 And therefore I say unto you O ye heathen that hear and understand Look for your Shepherd he shall give you everlasting rest for he is nigh at hand that shall come in the end of the world 35 Be ready to the reward of the kingdom for the everlasting light shall shine upon you for evermore 36 Flee the shadow of this world receive the joyfulness of your glory I testify my Saviour openly 37 O receive the gift that is given you and be glad giving thanks unto him that hath called you to the heavenly kingdom 38 Arise up and stand behold the number of those that be sealed ‖ Or for in the feast of the Lord. 39 Which are departed from the shadow of the world and have received glorious garments of the Lord. 40 Take thy number O Sion and †Lat. conclude shut up those of thine that are clothed in white which have fulfilled the law of the Lord. 41 The number of thy children whom thou longedst for is fulfilled beseech the power of the Lord that thy people which have been called from the beginning may be hallowed 42 * Rev. 7.9 I Esdras saw upon the mount Sion a great people whom I could not number and they all praised the Lord with songs 43 And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature taller then all the rest and upon every one of their heads he set crowns and was more exalted which I marvelled at greatly 44 So I asked the angel and said ‖ Or Lord. Sir what are these 45 He answered and said unto me These be they that have put off the mortal clothing and put on the immortal and have confessed the name of God now are they crowned and receive palms 46 Then said I unto the angel What young person is it that crowneth them and giveth them palms in their hands 47 So he answered and said unto me It is the Son of God whom they have confessed in the world Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stifly for the name of the Lord. 48 Then the angel said unto me Go thy way and tell my people what manner of things and how great wonders of the Lord thy God thou hast seen CHAP. Whom thou commandedst to build a city unto thy name and to offer incense and oblations unto thee therein 25 When this was done many years then they that inhabited the city forsook thee 26 And in all things did even as Adam and all his generations had done for they also had a wicked heart 27 And so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies 28 Are their deeds then any better that inhabit Babylon that they should therefore have the dominion over Sion 29 For when I came thither and had seen impieties without number then my soul saw many evil doers in this thirtieth year so that my heart failed me 30 For I have seen how thou sufferest them sinning and hast spared wicked doers and hast destroyed thy people and hast preserved thine enemiâ—â— and hast not signified it 31 ‖ Or I conceive I do not remember how this way may be left Are they then of Babylon better then they of Sion 32 Or is there any other people that knoweth thee besides Israel or what generation hath so beleeved thy covenants as Jacob 33 And yet their reward appeareth not and their labour hath no fruit for I have gone here and there through the heathen and I see that they ‖ Or abound flow in wealth and think not upon thy commandments 34 Weigh thou therefore our wickedness now in the balance and theirs also that dwell in the world and so shall thy name no where be found but in Israel 35 Or when was it that they which dwell upon the earth have not sinned in thy sight or what people hath so kept thy commandments 36 Thou shalt finde that Israel by name hath kept thy precepts but not the heathen CHAP. IV. 1 The angel declareth the ignorance of Esdras in Gods judgements 13 and adviseth him not to meddle with things above his reach 23 Nevertheless Esdras asketh divers questions and receiveth answers to them ANd the angel that was sent unto me whose name was Uriel gave me an answer 2 And said Thy heart hath gone too far in this world and thinkest thou to â—omprehend the way of the most High 3 Then said I Yea my lord and he answered me and said I am sent to shâ—w thee three ways and to set forth three similitudes before thee 4 Whereof if thou canst declare me one I will shew thee also the way that thou desirest to see and I shall shew thee from whence the wicked heart cometh 5 And I said Tell on my lord Then said he unto me Go thy way weigh me the weight of the fire or measure me the blast of the wind or call me again the day that is past 6 Then answered I and said What man is able to do that that thou shouldest ask such things of me 7 And he said unto me If I should ask thee how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea or how many springs are in the beginning of the deep or how many springs are above the firmament or which are the outgoings of paradise 8 Peradventure thou wouldest say unto me I never went down into the deep nor as yet into hell neither did I ever climbe up into heaven 9 Nevertheless now have I asked thee but onely of the fire and wind and of the day where-through thou hast passed and of things from which thou canst not be separated and yet canst thou give me no answer of them 10 He said moreover unto me Thine own things and such as are grown up with thee canst thou not know 11 How should thy vessel then be able to comprehend the way of the Highest and the world being now outwardly corrupted to understand the ‖ Or incorruption corruption that is evident in my sight 12 Then said I unto him It were better that we were not at all then that we should live still in wickedness and to suffer and not to know wherefore 13 He answered me and said I went into a forest into a plain and the * Judg. 9.8 2 Chr. 25.18 trees took counsel 14 And said Come let us go and make war against the sea that it may depart away before us and that we may make us more woods 15 The flouds of the sea also in like manner took counsel and said Come let us go up and subdue the woods of the plain that there also we may make us another countrey 16 The thought of the wood was in vain for the fire came and consumed it 17 The thought of the flouds of the sea came likewise to nought for the sand stood up and stopped them 18 If thou wert judge now betwixt these two whom wouldest thou begin to justifie or whom wouldest thou condemn 19 I answered and said Verily it is a foolish thought that they have both devised for ‖ Or the land the ground is given unto the wood and the sea also hath his place to bear his ‖ Or waves flouds 20 Then answered he me and said Thou hast given a right judgement but thy judgest thou not thyself also 21 For like as ‖ the land the ground is given unto the wood and the sea to his flouds even so * Is 55.8 9. Joh. 3.31 1 Cor. 2.14 they that dwell upon the earth may understand nothing but that which is upon the earth and he that dwelleth above the heavens may onely understand the things that are above the height of the heavens 22 Then answered I and said I beseech thee O Lord let me have understanding 23 For it was not my minde to be curious of the high things but of such as pass by us daily namely wherefore Israel is given up as a reproach to the heathen and for what cause the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations and why the law of our forefathers is brought to nought and the written covenants come ‖ Or no where to none effect 24 And we pass away out of the world as grashoppers and our life is astonishment and fear and we are not worthy to obtain mercy 25 What will he then do unto his name whereby we are called of these things have I asked 26 Then answered he me and said The more thou searchest the more thou shalt marvel for the world hasteth fast to pass away 27 And cannot comprehend the things that are promised to the righteous in time to
my spirit and little strength is there in me for the great fear wherewith I was affrighted this night 6 Therefore will I now beseech the Highest that he will comfort me unto the end 7 And I said Lord that bearest rule if I have found grace before thy sight and if I am justified with thee before many others and if my prayer indeed be come up before thy face 8 Comfort me then and shew me thy servant the interpretation and plain difference of this fearful vision that thou mayest perfecty comfors my soul 9 For thou hast judged me worthy to shew me the last times 10 And he said unto me This is the interpretation of the vision 11 The eagle whom thou sawest come up from the sea is the kingdom which was seen in the * Dan. 7.7 vision of thy brother Daniel 12 But it was not expounded unto him therefore now I declare it unto thee 13 Behold the days will come that there shall rise up a kingdom upon earth and it shall be feared above all the kingdoms that were before it 14 In the same shall twelve kings reign one after another 15 Whereof the second shall begin to reign and shall have more time then any of the twelve 16 And this do the twelve wings signifie which thou sawest 17 As for the voice which thou heardest speak and that thou sawest not to go out from the heads but from the mids of the body thereof this is the interpretation 18 That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great strivings and it shall stand in peril of falling nevertheless it shall not then fall but shall be restored again to his beginning 19 And whereas thou sawest the eight small under-feathers sticking to her wings this is the interpretation 20 That in him there shall arise eight kings whose time shall be but small and their years swift 21 And two of them shall perish the middle time approaching four shall be kept until their end begin to approach but two shall be kept unto the end 22 And whereas thou sawest three heads resting this is the interpretation 23 In his last days shall the most High raise up three kingdoms and renew many things therein they shall have the dominion of the earth 24 And of those that dwell therein with much oppression above all those that were before them therefore are they called the heads of the eagle 25 For these are they that shall accomplish his wickedness and that shall finish his last end 26 And whereas thou sawest that the great head appeared no more it signifieth that one of them shall die upon his bed and yet with pain 27 For the two that remain shall be slain with the sword 28 For the sword of the one shall devour the other but at the last shall he fall through the sword himself 29 And whereas thou sawest two feathers under the wings passing over the head that is on the right side 30 It signifieth that these are they whom the Highest hath kept unto their end this is the small kingdom and full of trouble as thou sawest 31 And the lion whom thou sawest rising up out of the wood and roaring and speaking to the eagle and rebuking her for her unrighteousness with all the words which thou hast heard 32 This is the anointed which the Highest hath kept for them and for their wickedness unto the end he shall reprove them and shall upbraind them with their cruelty 33 For he shall set them before him alive in judgement and shall rebuke them and correct them 34 For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy those that have be in preserved upon my borders and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the day of judgement whereof I have spoken unto thee from the beginning 35 This is the dream that thou sawest and these are the interpretations 36 Thou onely hast been meet to know this secret of the Highest 37 Therefore write all these things that thou hast seen in a book and hide them 38 And teach them to the wise of the people whose hearts thou knowest may comprehend and keep these secrets 39 But wait thou here thy self yet seven days more that it may be shewed thee whatsoever it pleaseth the Highest to declare unto thee And with that he went his way 40 And it came to pass when all the people saw that the seven days were past and I not come again into the city they gathered them all together from the least unto the greatest and came unto me and said 41 What have we offended thee and what evil have we done against thee that thou forsakest us and sittest here in this place 42 For of all the | Oâ— people prophets thou onely art left us as a cluster of the vintage and as a candle in a dark place and as a haven or ship preserved from the tempest 43 Are not the evils which are come to us sufficient 44 If thou shalt forsake us how much better had it been for us if we also had been burnt in the midst of Sion 45 For we are not better then they that died there And they wept with a load voice Then answered I them and said 46 Be of good comfort O Israel and be not heavie thou house of Jacob 47 For the Highest hath you in remembrance and the Mighty hath not forgotten you in temptation 48 As for me I have not forsaken you neither am I departed from you but am come into this place to pray for the desolation of Sion and that I might seek mercy for the low estate of your sanctuary 49 And now go your way home every man and after these days will I come unto you 50 So the people went their way into the city like as I commanded them 51 But I remained still in the field seven days as the angel commanded me and did eat onely in those days of the flowers of the field and had my meat of the herbs CHAP. XIII 1 He seethin bis dream a man coming out of the sea 25 The declaration of â—is dream 54 He is praised and promised to see more ANd it came to pass after seven days I dreamed a dream by night 2 And so there arose | 〈◊〉 man as the wind Junius a wind from the sea that it moved all the waves thereof 3 And I beheld and so that man waxed strong with the | clouâ—s thousands of heaven and when he turned his countenance to look all the things trembled that were seen under him 4 And whensoever the voice went out of his mouth all they burnt that heard his voice like as the earth faileth when it feeleth the fire 5 And after this I beheld and so there was gathered together a multitude of men out of number from the four winds of the heaven to subdue the man that came out of the sea 6 But I beheld and so he had graved himself a great
burnt-offering or sacrifice or oblation or incense or place to sacrifice before thee and to finde mercy 16 Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted 17 Like as in the burnt-offerings of rams and bullocks and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day and grant that we may wholly go after thee for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee 18 And now we follow thee with all our heart we fear thee and seek thy face 19 Put us not to shame but deal with us after thy loving kindness and according to the multitude of thy mercies 20 Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works give glory to thy name O Lord let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed 21 And let them be confounded ‖ Or by thy power and might in all their power and might and let their strength be broken 22 And let them know that thou art Lord the onely God and glorious over the whole world 23 And the kings servants that put Bels dragon Bel and the Dragon 16 Two judges hide themselves in the garden of Susanna to have their pleasure of her 28 which when they could not obtain they accuse and cause her to be condemned for adultery 45 But Daniel examineth the matter again and findeth the two judges false THere dwelt a man in Babylon called Joacim 2 And he took a wife whose name was Susanna the daughter of Chelcias
their eyes CHAP. VIII 1 At the opening of the seventh seal 2 seven angels had seven trumpets given them 6 Four of them sound their trumpets and great plagues follow 3 Another angel putteth incense to the prayers of the saints on the golden altar ANd when he had opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour 2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets 3 And another angel came and stood at the alter having a golden censer and there was given unto him much incense that he should ‖ Or add it to the prayâ—â—â— offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne 4 And the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angels hand 5 And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth and there were voices and thundrings and lightnings and an earthquake 6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound 7 The first angel sounded and there followed hail and fire mingled with bloud and they were cast upon the earth and the third part of trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up 8 And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became bloud 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and the third part of the ships were destroyed 10 And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven burning as it were a lamp and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters 11 And the name of the star is called Woormwood and the third part of the waters became woormwood and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter 12 And the fourth angel sounded and the third part of the sun was smitten and the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars so as the third part of them was darkned and the day shone not for a third part of it and the night likewise 13 And I behold and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice Wo wo wo to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels which are yet to sound CHAP. IX 1 At the sounding of the fifth angel a star falleth from heaven to whom is given the key of the bottomless pit 2 He openeth the pit and there come forth locusts like scorpions 12 The first wo past 13 The sixth trumpet soundeth 14 Four angels are let loose that were bound ANd the fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit 2 And he opened the bottomless pit and there arose a smoke out of the pit as the smoke of a great furnace and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth and unto them was given power as the sâ—orpions of the earth have power 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth neither any green thing neither any tree but onely those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them but that they should be tormented five moneths and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man 6 And in those days * Isa 2 1â— Chap. 6.16 shall men seek death and shall not finde it and shall desire to die and death shall flee from them 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battel and on their heads were as it were crowns like Gold and their faces were as the faces of men 8 And they had hair as the hair of women and their teeth were as the teeth of lions 9 And they had breastplates as it were breastplates of iron and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battel 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions and there were stings in their tails and their power was to hurt men five moneths 11 And they had a king over them which is the angel of the bottomless pit whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon but in the Greek tongue hath his name ‖ That is to say a destroyer Apollyon 12 One wo is past and behold there come two woes more hereafter 13 And the sixth angel sounded and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates 15 And the four angels were loosed which were prepared ‖ Or at for an hour and a day and a moneth and a year for to slay the third part of men 16 And the number of the army of the hors-men were two hundred thousand thousand and I heard the number of them 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision and them that sat on them having breast-plates of fire and of jacinct and brimstone and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone 18 By these three was the third part of men killed by the fire and by the smoke and by the brimstone which issued out of their mouths 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails for their tails were like unto serpents and had heads and with them they do hurt 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands that they should not worship devils * Psal 115.4 and 135. â—5 and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and of wood which neither can see nor hear nor walk 21 Neither repented they of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their fornication nor of their thefts CHAP. A mighty strong angel appeareth with a book open in his hand 6 He sweareth by him that liveth for ever that there shall be no more time 9 John is commanded to take and eat the book ANd I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud and a rainbowe was upon his head and his face was as it were the sun and his feet as pillars of fire 2 And he had in his hand a little book open and he set his right foot upon the sea and his left foot on the earth 3 And cried with a loud voice as when a lion
face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entring in of the cave and behold there came a voice unto him and said What doest thou here Elijah 14 And he said I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant thrown down thine altars and slain thy prophets with the sword and I even I onely am left and they seek my life to take it away 15 And the LORD said unto him Go return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus and when thou comest anoint Hazael to be king over Syria 16 And * 2 Kin 9.1 2. Ecclus. 48.8 Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel and * Luke 4.27 called Eliseus Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room 17 And it shall come to pass that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay 18 * Rom. 11.4 Yet ‖ Or I will leave I have left me seven thousand in Israel all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal and every mouth which hath not kissed him 19 ¶ So he departed thence and found Elisha the son of Shaphat who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him and he with the twelfth and Elijah passed by him and cast his mantle upon him 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said Let me I pray thee kiss my father and my mother and then I will follow thee And he said unto him †Heb. Go return Go back again for what have I done to thee 21 And he returned back from him and took a yoke of oxen and slew them and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen and gave unto the people and they did eat then he arose and went after Elijah and ministred unto him CHAP. XX. 1 Ben-hadad not content with Ahabs homage besiegeth Samaria 13 By the direction of a prophet the Syrians are slain 22 As the prophet forewarned Ahab the Syrians trusting in the valleys come against him in Aphek 28 By the word of the prophet and Gods judgement the Syrians are smitten again 31 The Syrians submitting themselves Ahab sendeth Ben-hadad away with a covenant 35 The prophet under the parable of a prisoner making Ahab to judge himself denounceth Gods judgement against him ANd Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together and there were thirty and two kings with him and horses and chariots and he went up and besieged Samaria and warred against it 2 And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city and said unto him Thus saith Ben-hadad 3 Thy silver and thy gold is mine thy wives also and thy children even the goodliest are mine 4 And the king of Israel answered and said My lord O king according to thy saying I am thine and all that I have 5 And the messengers came again and said Thus speaketh Ben-hadad saying Although I have sent unto thee saying Thou shalt deliver me thy silver and thy gold and thy wives and thy children 6 Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time and they shall search thine house and the houses of thy servants and it shall be that whatsoever is †Heb. dâ—sâ—â—able pleasant in thine eyes they shall put it in their hand and take it away 7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said Mark I pray you and see how this man seeketh mischief for he sent unto me for my wives and for my children and for my silver and for my gold and †Heb. I kept not back from him I denied him not 8 And all the elders and all the people said unto him Hearken not unto him nor consent 9 Wherefore he said unto the messenges of Ben-hadad Tell my lord the king All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do but this thing I may not do And the messengers departed and brought him word again 10 And Ben-hadad sent unto him and said The gods do so unto me and more also if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that †Heb. are at my feet follow me 11 And the king of Israel answered Tell him Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off 12 And it came to pass when Ben-hadad heard this †Heb word message as he was drinking he and the kings in the ‖ Or tents pavilions that he said unto his servants ‖ Or Place the engines And they placed engines Set your selves in aray And they set themselves in aray against the city 13 ¶ And behold there †Heb. approached came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel saying Thus saith the LORD Hast thou seen all this great multitude behold I will deliver it into thine hand this day and thou shalt know that I am the LORD 14 And Ahab said By whom And he said Thus saith the LORD Even by the ‖ Or servants young men of the princes of the provinces Then he said Who shall †Heb. hinde or 〈◊〉 order the battel And he answered Thou 15 Then he numbred the young men of the princes of the provinces and they were two hundred and thirty two and after them he numbred all the people even all the children of Israel being seven thousand 16 And they went out at noon but Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions he and the kings the thirty and two kings that helped him 17 And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first and Ben-hadad sent out and they told him saying There are men come out of Samaria 18 And he said Whether they be come out for peace take them alive or whether they be come out for war take them alive 19 So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city and the army which followed them 20 And they slew every one his man and the Syrians fled and Israel pursued them and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the hors-men 21 And the king of Israel went out and smote the horses and chariots and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter 22 ¶ And the prophet came to the king of Israel and said unto him Go strengthen thy self and mark and see what thou doest for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee 23 And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him Their gods are gods of the hills therefore they were stronger then we but let us fight against them in the plain and surely we shall be stronger then they 24 And do this thing Take the kings away every man out of his place and put captains in their rooms 25
