he_o proclaim_v his_o name_n to_o he_o the_o lord_n the_o lord_n gracious_a merciful_a etc._n etc._n and_o compare_v the_o word_n with_o the_o scope_n it_o say_v that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o save_a uptaking_n of_o god_n but_o as_o he_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o word_n and_o that_o way_n we_o be_v to_o be_v fix_v in_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o he_o and_o in_o go_v to_o he_o by_o prayer_n through_o the_o mediator_n we_o will_v guard_v against_o any_o representation_n and_o fix_v our_o faith_n on_o clear_a promise_n and_o attribut_n as_o scripture_n hold_v he_o forth_o 5._o we_o will_v endeavour_v rather_o to_o have_v a_o compose_a frame_n of_o spirit_n with_o holy_a reverence_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o fear_n faith_n and_o love_n and_o of_o other_o spiritual_a grace_n then_o to_o fill_v our_o understanding_n with_o thing_n mere_o speculative_a and_o less_o practical_a and_o profitable_a and_o suppose_v that_o we_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n clear_a in_o what_o be_v reveal_v of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o attribut_n and_o promise_n in_o the_o word_n in_o as_o far_o as_o may_v found_v our_o faith_n and_o warrant_v we_o to_o put_v up_o such_o and_o such_o suit_n to_o god_n through_o the_o mediator_n and_o that_o we_o come_v to_o he_o in_o holy_a reverence_n we_o be_v rather_o to_o exercise_v our_o grace_n and_o have_v a_o â—ve_v downward_o in_o reflect_v on_o ourselves_o â—â—eking_v to_o be_v clear_a in_o what_o be_v call_v for_o in_o a_o worshipper_n of_o god_n then_o to_o be_v curious_o pore_v and_o pry_v into_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n himself_o and_o therefore_o let_v this_o be_v well_o study_v even_o to_o be_v up_o at_o that_o wherein_o we_o be_v clear_a and_o which_o we_o do_v not_o question_v not_o make_v any_o doubt_n of_o as_o namely_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o compose_a frame_n of_o spirit_n in_o holy_a reverence_n and_o under_o the_o due_a impression_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n and_o then_o there_o will_v be_v the_o less_o hazard_n if_o any_o at_o all_o of_o go_v wrong_n whereas_o if_o we_o divert_v from_o this_o and_o seek_v to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o in_o the_o how_o or_o manner_n of_o up-taking_a of_o god_n we_o will_v but_o mire_n ourselves_o and_o maâ—_n the_o frame_n of_o our_o own_o spirit_n and_o bring_v ourselves_o under_o a_o incapacity_n of_o go_v about_o duty_n right_o this_o much_o we_o have_v speak_v on_o the_o three_o part_n of_o the_o use_n of_o exhortation_n wherein_o we_o allow_v a_o sober_a and_o solid_a up-taking_a of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o in_o as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v profitable_a for_o sound_v of_o our_o faith_n and_o for_o guide_v of_o our_o practice_n but_o not_o to_o satisfy_v curiosity_n for_o if_o we_o once_o go_v to_o chase_v and_o follow_v question_n upon_o question_n in_o what_o concern_v the_o doctrinal_a and_o speculative_a part_n of_o this_o doctrine_n we_o will_v run_v ourselves_o a_o ground_n and_o therefore_o god_n have_v make_v these_o thing_n wherein_o our_o duty_n necessary_o lie_v clear_a that_o there_o be_v no_o hazard_n to_o go_v wrong_n in_o single_a follow_v of_o it_o we_o will_v study_v these_o thing_n that_o be_v clear_a which_o may_v be_v another_o direction_n and_o hold_v we_o with_o and_o at_o what_o we_o be_v clear_a in_o and_o not_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o run_v out_o on_o either_o groundless_a or_o unprofitable_a speculation_n god_n himself_o help_v to_o the_o suitable_a practice_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o to_o he_o be_v 〈◊〉_d sermon_n lxx_o isaiah_n liii_o xii_o verse_n 12._o and_o he_o make_v intercession_n for_o the_o transgressor_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n that_o god_n have_v bestow_v such_o a_o mediator_n on_o sinner_n that_o he_o have_v give_v such_o a_o high_a priest_n that_o can_v be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o sinner_n infirmity_n so_o as_o to_o make_v intercession_n for_o they_o and_o o_o but_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n to_o be_v help_v to_o make_v right_a use_n of_o he_o when_o these_o two_o go_v together_o to_o wit_n a_o saviour_n offer_v furnish_v with_o all_o these_o office_n of_o king_n priest_n and_o prophet_n and_o a_o soul_n sanctify_v and_o guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o make_v use_n of_o he_o according_a to_o these_o office_n it_o be_v a_o wonderful_o and_o inconceivable_o gracious_a dispensation_n and_o it_o be_v no_o doubt_n a_o very_a valuable_a mercy_n to_o be_v heple_v to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o part_n of_o christ_n office_n to_o wit_n his_o intercession_n this_o be_v that_o whereof_o we_o have_v begin_v some_o few_o day_n since_o to_o speak_v to_o you_o and_o for_o the_o better_a clear_n of_o it_o we_o endeavour_v to_o answer_v some_o doubt_n or_o question_n that_o it_o may_v be_v have_v arisen_a and_o be_v toss_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o while_o we_o have_v be_v discourse_v of_o and_o open_v up_o this_o matter_n that_o which_o we_o will_v now_o speak_v a_o little_a to_o be_v a_o subject_n of_o that_o nature_n that_o consider_v our_o shallowness_n in_o uptake_v of_o these_o thing_n we_o can_v easy_o tell_v whether_o it_o be_v better_a to_o speak_v of_o or_o to_o forbear_v the_o speak_n of_o any_o doubt_n or_o question_n lest_o one_o occasion_n â—n_o another_o and_o therefore_o most_o certain_o there_o will_v be_v much_o sobriety_n here_o and_o a_o abandon_v of_o all_o sinful_a curiosity_n least_o unseasonable_a and_o intemperate_a desire_v to_o know_v either_o what_o be_v not_o to_o be_v know_v or_o what_o we_o can_v know_v mar_v and_o obstruct_v our_o improvement_n of_o what_o we_o do_v or_o may_v know_v several_a thing_n doubt_v of_o may_v be_v move_v and_o object_v here_o but_o we_o shall_v only_o speak_v a_o word_n to_o the_o clear_n of_o these_o four_n 1_o some_o thing_n concern_v the_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o particular_o of_o prayer_n in_o general_n 2._o we_o shall_v consider_v how_o the_o mediator_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o prayer_n or_o how_o he_o may_v be_v pray_v unto_o 3._o a_o word_n more_o particular_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o form_n of_o some_o particular_a petition_n and_o to_o what_o seem_v most_o warrantable_a from_o the_o word_n in_o these_o 4._o we_o shall_v answer_v some_o practical_a doubt_n that_o have_v or_o may_v have_v some_o puzzle_v influence_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o some_o christian_n but_o as_o i_o say_v we_o have_v need_v in_o speak_v and_o hear_v of_o these_o thing_n to_o be_v awe_v with_o some_o deep_a impression_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n on_o our_o heart_n lest_o we_o meddle_v carnal_o with_o matter_n of_o a_o most_o sublime_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a nature_n for_o clear_v of_o the_o first_o then_o we_o lay_v down_o these_o assertion_n the_o 1._o whereof_o be_v that_o as_o there_o be_v one_o worship_n so_o there_o be_v no_o formal_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o god_n this_o be_v clear_a because_o the_o worship_v of_o any_o with_o divine_a worship_n as_o namely_o with_o believe_v in_o they_o or_o pray_v to_o they_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v such_o attribut_n of_o omni-science_n omni-potency_n supremacy_n etc._n etc._n as_o be_v only_o agreeable_a to_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n for_o we_o can_v pray_v to_o one_o but_o we_o must_v believe_v that_o he_o hear_v we_o and_o so_o that_o he_o be_v omni-scient_a that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o help_v we_o and_o so_o omni-poâ—entâ—_a that_o he_o be_v above_o all_o and_o so_o supreme_a as_o it_o be_v rom._n 10.14_o how_o shall_v they_o call_v on_o he_o in_o who_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v there_o can_v be_v no_o divine_a object_n of_o worship_n to_o settle_v the_o soul_n upon_o but_o where_o the_o essential_a attribut_n of_o the_o godhead_n be_v and_o it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o we_o reject_v invocation_n of_o saint_n and_o angel_n adorability_n be_v the_o essential_a property_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o eternity_n and_o immutability_n be_v there_o can_v be_v no_o adore_v or_o worship_v of_o any_o but_o where_o there_o be_v adorability_n in_o the_o object_n that_o be_v worship_v by_o that_o worship_n and_o there_o be_v none_o capable_a of_o worship_n but_o god_n supremacy_n be_v due_a and_o essential_a to_o he_o only_o 2._o that_o though_o there_o be_v three_o person_n in_o the_o glorious_a and_o bless_a godhead_n distinct_a yet_o there_o be_v not_o three_o distinct_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n only_o the_o father_n be_v not_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n the_o son_n another_o and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n a_o
three_o but_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n be_v that_o same_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o when_o we_o pray_v to_o one_o we_o pray_v to_o all_o the_o reason_n be_v clear_a because_o though_o there_o be_v three_o person_n in_o the_o godhead_n yet_o there_o be_v but_o one_o essence_n in_o the_o godhead_n and_o the_o divine_a essential_a property_n which_o be_v the_o ground_n on_o which_o we_o adore_v god_n be_v essential_a and_o agree_v to_o all_o the_o person_n of_o the_o godhead_n the_o father_n have_v not_o one_o omnipotency_n and_o the_o son_n another_o neither_o be_v there_o two_o omnipotents_a but_o one_o omnipotent_a god_n and_o so_o in_o other_o attribut_n they_o be_v the_o same_o essential_a property_n of_o the_o godhead_n and_o incommunicable_a and_o therefore_o though_o the_o father_n be_v another_o person_n and_o as_o they_o use_v to_o speak_v alius_fw-la yet_o he_o be_v not_o another_o thing_n or_o aliud_fw-la but_o the_o same_o god_n with_o the_o son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n and_o although_o the_o person_n have_v a_o real_a distinction_n among_o themselves_o yet_o none_o of_o they_o be_v real_o distinct_a from_o the_o godhead_n and_o so_o there_o be_v but_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o therefore_o though_o sometime_o all_o the_o person_n be_v name_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o to_o show_v any_o distinction_n in_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n but_o to_o show_v who_o be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n to_o wit_n one_o god_n yet_o three_o person_n or_o iâ—_n three_o 3._o that_o though_o in_o prayer_n to_o god_n we_o may_v name_v either_o the_o father_n the_o son_n or_o the_o holy_a ghost_n yet_o whosoever_o we_o name_v it_o be_v always_o the_o same_o god_n father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n that_o be_v worship_v and_o this_o follow_v well_o on_o the_o former_a and_o may_v be_v the_o use_n of_o it_o for_o if_o the_o father_n be_v god_n and_o if_o we_o worship_v he_o as_o god_n we_o can_v worship_v he_o but_o we_o must_v worship_v the_o son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n with_o he_o because_o they_o be_v the_o same_o god_n have_v the_o same_o essential_a attribut_n and_o therefore_o 4._o whensoever_o we_o pray_v to_o and_o name_n one_o of_o the_o person_n we_o will_v not_o conceive_v that_o he_o be_v less_o worship_v that_o be_v not_o name_v or_o that_o we_o pray_v less_o to_o he_o that_o be_v not_o name_v as_o it_o may_v be_v in_o the_o same_o prayer_n when_o a_o person_n begin_v at_o first_o he_o name_v the_o father_n and_o when_o he_o have_v proceed_v a_o little_a he_o name_v the_o son_n man_n will_v then_o beware_v of_o think_v that_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n in_o the_o object_n they_o be_v pray_v to_o or_o as_o if_o they_o begin_v to_o pray_v to_o one_o of_o the_o person_n and_o now_o they_o be_v pray_v to_o another_o as_o a_o distinct_a party_n for_o it_o be_v still_o the_o same_o god_n who_o be_v the_o object_n of_o worship_n we_o observe_v it_o to_o teach_v you_o calmness_n soberness_n and_o composedness_n of_o frame_n in_o approach_v to_o god_n wherein_o folk_n will_v beware_v of_o curious_a toss_n in_o their_o mind_n and_o imagination_n what_o may_v be_v the_o object_n of_o their_o worship_n and_o of_o suffer_v it_o to_o run_v in_o a_o itch_o curious_a way_n on_o the_o distinction_n of_o the_o person_n but_o will_v stay_v their_o mind_n upon_o one_o god_n in_o three_o person_n and_o seek_v after_o no_o more_o the_o second_o be_v how_o the_o mediator_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o prayer_n or_o may_v be_v pray_v unto_o and_o for_o clear_v of_o this_o we_o will_v propose_v these_o consideration_n 1._o that_o it_o be_v a_o certain_a truth_n that_o the_o person_n that_o be_v the_o mediator_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o woriship_n and_o may_v be_v pray_v unto_o because_o he_o be_v god_n the_o second_o person_n of_o the_o godhead_n and_o therefore_o act._n 7._o at_o the_o close_a a_o direct_a prayer_n be_v put_v up_o to_o he_o by_o stephen_n lord_n jesus_n say_v he_o receive_v my_o spirit_n 2._o we_o say_v this_o that_o the_o adoration_n and_o worship_n that_o be_v give_v to_o the_o mediator_n be_v not_o of_o any_o distinct_a kind_n from_o that_o adoration_n and_o worship_n that_o be_v give_v to_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o the_o same_o supreme_a divine_a worship_n for_o he_o be_v the_o same_o god_n with_o the_o father_n and_o holy_a ghost_n and_o although_o he_o be_v mediator_n it_o derogat_n nothing_o from_o his_o godhead_n and_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o no_o divine_a worship_n but_o one_o we_o be_v therefore_o not_o to_o conceive_v he_o to_o be_v worship_v with_o less_o confidence_n fear_n or_o reverence_n then_o the_o other_o person_n of_o the_o trinity_n for_o there_o be_v no_o such_o worship_n in_o scripture_n and_o to_o give_v he_o less_o will_v derogat_n from_o the_o majesty_n of_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v god_n equal_a with_o the_o father_n and_o the_o spirit_n for_o although_o as_o mediator_n he_o be_v inferior_a to_o the_o father_n yet_o the_o person_n who_o we_o worship_v be_v god_n equal_a with_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n 3._o the_o worship_v of_o jesus_n christ_n mediator_n and_o the_o give_v of_o he_o divine_a worship_n be_v not_o the_o worship_v of_o any_o other_o object_n but_o of_o the_o same_o to_o wit_n god_n who_o be_v make_v flesh_n and_o be_v manifest_v in_o our_o nature_n by_o the_o union_n of_o the_o second_o person_n of_o the_o godhead_n with_o the_o humane_a nature_n which_o he_o have_v assume_v and_o take_v to_o he_o upon_o which_o it_o follow_v that_o jesus_n christ_n must_v be_v the_o same_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o that_o our_o worship_v of_o he_o be_v the_o worship_v of_o god_n and_o that_o our_o pray_v to_o he_o be_v pray_v to_o god_n the_o father_n son_n and_o spirit_n and_o there_o be_v reason_n to_o take_v heed_n to_o this_o because_o when_o we_o in_o prayer_n be_v speak_v to_o the_o mediator_n thought_n may_v steal_v in_o as_o if_o we_o be_v not_o so_o immediate_o and_o direct_o speak_v to_o god_n as_o when_o we_o name_v the_o father_n 4._o consider_v that_o christ_n jesus_n be_v worship_v with_o this_o divine_a worship_n as_o the_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n for_o as_o we_o show_v there_o can_v be_v two_o object_n of_o divine_a worship_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o christ_n jesus_n as_o god_n be_v worship_v for_o though_o it_o be_v the_o person_n that_o be_v mediator_n and_o man_n that_o be_v worship_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o person_n as_o man_n but_o as_o god_n that_o be_v worship_v and_o the_o reason_n be_v clear_a because_o it_o be_v not_o christ_n jesus_n as_o man_n but_o as_o god_n that_o have_v these_o property_n of_o god_n to_o be_v omni-scient_a omni-potent_a infinite_a supreme_a adorable_a etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o as_o upon_o the_o one_o hand_n we_o say_v that_o christ_n god_n die_v and_o suffer_v because_o he_o be_v god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n the_o person_n that_o be_v and_o be_v god_n die_v and_o suffer_v though_o the_o godhead_n do_v not_o neither_o can_v suffer_v so_o upon_o the_o other_o hand_n we_o say_v that_o christ_n man_n be_v pray_v unto_o because_o he_o who_o be_v god_n man_n be_v pray_v unto_o as_o god_n but_o though_o there_o be_v a_o union_n of_o the_o two_o nature_n in_o the_o mediator_n person_n and_o though_o the_o property_n of_o the_o one_o nature_n be_v sometime_o attribute_v to_o the_o other_o because_o of_o the_o straitness_n of_o the_o union_n yet_o we_o must_v still_o keep_v the_o property_n of_o each_o nature_n distinct_a and_o in_o our_o worship-application_n to_o he_o consider_v he_o according_o as_o to_o be_v finite_a agree_v to_o his_o humane_a nature_n and_o be_v to_o be_v attribute_v to_o that_o and_o to_o be_v infinite_a agree_v to_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o be_v to_o be_v attribute_v to_o he_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o to_o clear_v it_o a_o little_a if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o we_o to_o clear_v it_o we_o must_v conceive_v in_o our_o worship_v of_o god_n in_o the_o person_n of_o a_o mediator_n a_o threefold_a object_n of_o our_o worship_n for_o so_o divine_v use_v to_o distinguish_v and_o we_o hold_v we_o close_o by_o they_o 1._o the_o material_a object_n or_o the_o object_n which_o we_o worship_v that_o be_v the_o person_n we_o pray_v to_o 2._o the_o formal_a object_n of_o our_o worship_n or_o that_o which_o be_v the_o ground_n or_o account_v on_o which_o we_o worship_v that_o person_n 3._o the_o object_n of_o our_o consideration_n in_o our_o worship_v of_o that_o person_n on_o that_o account_v as_o for_o instance_n 1._o the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n be_v the_o person_n who_o we_o worship_v or_o pray_v unto_o but_o
like_o these_o that_o be_v bring_v in_o jer._n 44.17_o say_n it_o be_v better_a with_o as_o when_o we_o do_v bake_v cake_n to_o the_o queen_n of_o heaven_n the_o lord_n be_v count_v by_o they_o to_o be_v as_o a_o wilderness_n and_o land_n of_o darkness_n and_o they_o say_v as_o it_o be_v jer._n 2.31_o we_o be_v lord_n and_o will_v come_v no_o more_o unto_o thou_o and_o when_o man_n esteem_v not_o christ_n they_o seek_v not_o after_o he_o they_o care_v not_o for_o a_o interest_n in_o he_o they_o trust_v not_o to_o he_o when_o a_o man_n valu_v a_o pearl_n he_o will_v ready_o sell_v all_o that_o he_o have_v that_o he_o may_v buy_v it_o but_o that_o which_o be_v not_o esteem_v there_o will_v be_v no_o care_n to_o come_v by_o it_o 2._o it_o have_v influence_n to_o obstruct_v folk_n give_v he_o credit_n which_o be_v of_o the_o very_a essence_n of_o faith_n so_o then_o where_o he_o be_v not_o esteem_v of_o he_o be_v not_o he_o can_v be_v believe_v on_o the_o former_a say_v that_o we_o will_v not_o marry_v he_o this_o say_v we_o will_v not_o trow_v he_o nor_o trust_v the_o reality_n of_o his_o offer_n where_o he_o be_v not_o esteem_v of_o he_o be_v not_o take_v up_o to_o be_v real_a in_o good_a earnest_n and_o faithful_a in_o what_o he_o say_v his_o offer_n be_v look_v upon_o as_o have_v neither_o solidity_n nor_o reality_n in_o they_o therefore_o rev._n 19_o these_o two_o be_v put_v together_o first_o it_o be_v say_v bless_a be_v they_o that_o be_v call_v to_o the_o marriage_n supper_n of_o the_o lamb_n and_o than_o it_o be_v subjoin_v these_o be_v the_o true_a and_o faithful_a say_n of_o god_n so_o that_o when_o christ_n be_v not_o esteem_v of_o he_o be_v not_o think_v worthy_a the_o credit_v and_o lippen_v to_o and_o it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n that_o the_o lord_n find_v his_o contraversie_n with_o his_o profess_v people_n jer._n 2.5_o what_o iniquity_n have_v your_o father_n find_v in_o i_o that_o they_o have_v go_v far_o from_o i_o and_o have_v walk_v after_o vanity_n and_o be_v become_v vain_a they_o undervalue_v his_o word_n they_o think_v he_o not_o worthy_a credit_n and_o therefore_o they_o turn_v the_o back_n on_o he_o the_o same_o be_v insinuate_v by_o the_o lord_n micah_n 6.3_o o_o my_o people_n what_o have_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o and_o wherein_o have_v i_o weary_v thou_o testify_v against_o i_o 3._o this_o little_a esteem_n of_o christ_n weaken_v hope_n or_o expectation_n of_o any_o good_a that_o man_n may_v have_v from_o he_o when_o we_o esteem_v he_o not_o there_o be_v no_o expectation_n of_o get_v our_o need_n supply_v and_o our_o want_n make_v up_o by_o he_o nor_o of_o attain_v in_o he_o the_o happiness_n that_o we_o will_v be_v at_o and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o serious_a address_n make_v to_o he_o for_o the_o same_o these_o three_o love_n to_o he_o trust_v in_o he_o hope_v from_o and_o through_o he_o be_v the_o prime_a grace_n in_o a_o christian_a when_o they_o be_v weaken_v unbelief_n most_o certain_o in_o so_o far_o prevail_v and_o it_o be_v christ_n worthiness_n and_o the_o estimation_n thereof_o that_o give_v ground_n to_o all_o these_o then_o sure_a when_o he_o be_v not_o esteem_v but_o undervalue_v these_o must_v also_o fall_v in_o their_o exercise_n and_o be_v in_o utter_a nonentry_n where_o he_o be_v altogether_o undervalue_v now_o lay_v all_o these_o together_o there_o can_v hardly_o be_v welcome_v where_o he_o be_v not_o at_o all_o esteem_v of_o as_o for_o uses_n of_o these_o doctrine_n they_o be_v of_o large_a extent_n serve_v to_o make_v manifest_a a_o root_n of_o bitterness_n and_o a_o great_a neck-break_a of_o multitude_n of_o soul_n and_o which_o man_n and_o woman_n will_v not_o easy_o be_v persuade_v to_o believe_v let_v this_o therefore_o be_v the_o 1._o use_v of_o it_o to_o discover_v a_o great_a sin_n that_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o hearer_n of_o this_o gospel_n among_o many_o other_o thing_n that_o may_v be_v charge_v on_o they_o this_o be_v one_o and_o not_o the_o least_o even_o little_a estimation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o little_a that_o when_o he_o be_v speak_v they_o count_v he_o scarce_o worthy_a the_o hear_n hence_o be_v the_o slumber_a and_o sleep_v of_o so_o many_o when_o he_o be_v preach_v of_o which_o hold_v out_o something_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o man_n and_o woman_n this_o despise_v undervalue_a and_o think_v little_a of_o christ_n be_v a_o sin_n that_o may_v for_o a_o long_a time_n cleave_v fast_o and_o close_o to_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o do_v so_o to_o many_o to_o their_o very_a die_a day_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v think_v this_o a_o strange_a and_o uncoath_a charge_n and_o that_o whoever_o disesteem_v he_o you_o do_v certain_o esteem_v he_o much_o but_o it_o be_v better_a you_o be_v serious_o and_o humble_o save_v with_o the_o prophet_n here_o he_o be_v despise_v and_o we_o esteem_v he_o not_o there_o be_v many_o who_o never_o once_o suspect_v themselves_o as_o guilty_a of_o or_o chargeable_a with_o this_o evil_n for_o who_o conviction_n let_v i_o speak_v but_o a_o few_o word_n be_v there_o not_o such_o a_o bitter_a root_n in_o you_o if_o it_o be_v natural_a to_o all_o man_n and_o woman_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o you_o be_v free_a of_o it_o be_v there_o nothing_o of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o serpent_n in_o you_o and_o if_o there_o be_v will_v there_o not_o be_v hatred_n at_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n in_o you_o be_v you_o any_o other_o sort_n of_o hearer_n than_o they_o be_v to_o who_o this_o be_v speak_v be_v they_o not_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o well_o as_o you_o nay_o he_o speak_v here_o of_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o all_o age_n and_o yet_o you_o will_v disdain_v to_o take_v with_o this_o sin_n and_o will_v account_v it_o to_o be_v a_o uncouth_a if_o not_o a_o unjust_a charge_n and_o imputation_n to_o say_v of_o you_o that_o you_o be_v undervaluer_n and_o despiser_n of_o christ_n but_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v twofold_a the_o first_o whereof_o be_v because_o you_o know_v not_o what_o christ_n worth_n be_v and_o therefore_o you_o do_v neither_o esteem_v he_o nor_o know_v that_o you_o disesteem_v and_o undervalue_v he_o whereas_o they_o who_o have_v win_v to_o some_o knowledge_n of_o his_o worth_n be_v always_o or_o very_o often_o complain_v that_o they_o can_v get_v he_o suitable_o think_v of_o and_o esteem_v the_o second_o reason_n be_v because_o you_o know_v not_o yourselves_o and_o therefore_o you_o take_v self-love_n and_o estimation_n of_o yourselves_o to_o be_v love_n to_o he_o and_o estimation_n of_o he_o you_o think_v yourselves_o so_o well_o that_o you_o can_v endure_v to_o think_v that_o you_o want_v any_o grace_n or_o good_a thing_n and_o estimation_n of_o christ_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o you_o think_v that_o you_o can_v not_o hold_v up_o your_o face_n and_o own_o the_o reproach_v and_o despise_v of_o he_o you_o will_v not_o let_v it_o light_v that_o you_o want_v this_o grace_n and_o good_a thing_n a_o precious_a esteem_n of_o he_o but_o there_o be_v no_o great_a evidence_n that_o you_o be_v lie_v under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o deceit_n and_o delusion_n of_o your_o own_o heart_n that_o your_o natural_a distemper_n and_o fever_n be_v not_o yet_o cool_v and_o calm_v but_o that_o you_o be_v still_o rove_a in_o nature_n and_o therefore_o though_o you_o be_v live_v in_o enmity_n at_o god_n and_o christ_n yet_o you_o can_v be_v make_v sensible_a of_o it_o we_o real_o think_v it_o somewhat_o strange_a that_o man_n and_o woman_n shall_v live_v twenty_o thirty_o forty_o or_o fifty_o year_n under_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o never_o be_v bring_v to_o groan_v under_o this_o enmity_n nor_o to_o lay_v to_o heart_n this_o sin_n of_o undervalue_v of_o christ_n but_o if_o it_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o none_o natural_o do_v love_n and_o esteem_v he_o then_o certain_o many_o of_o you_o be_v gross_o mistake_v that_o think_v you_o esteem_v high_o of_o he_o ah_o your_o fancy_a esteem_n of_o he_o will_v be_v count_v a_o undervalue_v of_o he_o and_o if_o you_o ask_v what_o be_v that_o to_o undervalue_v christ_n or_o when_o be_v he_o undervalue_v i_o answer_v he_o be_v undervalue_v 1._o when_o he_o be_v not_o match_v with_o or_o marry_v when_o you_o match_v with_o himself_o whereof_o he_o make_v offer_v be_v not_o close_v with_o upon_o his_o own_o term_n for_o what_o i_o pray_v can_v hinder_v the_o end_n of_o a_o bargain_n or_o finish_v
you_o be_v all_o liable_a to_o appear_v before_o god_n justice-seat_n you_o be_v all_o guilty_a and_o by_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n under_o god_n curse_n and_o condemn_v already_o because_o will_v think_v much_o of_o grace_n o_o how_o very_o much_o if_o you_o be_v serious_o compare_v these_o two_o together_o to_o be_v so_o near_a hell_n and_o yet_o as_o it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o ladder_n set_v up_o for_o you_o to_o ascend_v to_o heaven_n by_o and_o that_o in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o by_o christ_n become_v a_o curse_n they_o will_v certain_o never_o think_v much_o of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n they_o will_v never_o think_v much_o of_o their_o own_o hazard_n nor_o will_v they_o ever_o in_o earnest_n make_v use_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n who_o have_v not_o some_o quick_a and_o lively_a impression_n and_o sense_n of_o this_o their_o condition_n by_o nature_n and_o therefore_o when_o ever_o you_o go_v to_o read_v to_o hear_v to_o pray_v to_o meditat_fw-la etc._n etc._n take_v up_o yourselves_o as_o natural_o arrest_v before_o the_o court_n of_o god_n and_o obnoxious_a to_o his_o wrath_n this_o will_v lay_v your_o pride_n and_o make_v christ_n offer_n in_o the_o gospel_n lovely_a to_o you_o use_v 3._o this_o show_v that_o these_o who_o get_v any_o good_a of_o christ_n be_v much_o in_o christ_n debt_n and_o common_a and_o have_v in_o themselves_o no_o cause_n to_o boast_v of_o it_o if_o this_o be_v true_a even_o of_o the_o elect_n that_o they_o be_v all_o once_o under_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n else_o they_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v by_o christ_n you_o that_o think_v yourselves_o to_o be_v something_o what_o have_v you_o to_o boast_v of_o who_o have_v make_v you_o to_o differ_v and_o what_o have_v you_o but_o what_o you_o have_v receive_v it_o set_v you_o well_o therefore_o to_o be_v humble_a and_o to_o put_v a_o price_n upon_o christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v on_o the_o same_o consideration_n gal._n 2.20_o when_o he_o say_v who_o love_v i_o and_o give_v himself_o for_o i_o that_o make_v he_o relish_v sweet_o to_o the_o believer_n and_o this_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o his_o who_o be_v so_o lovely_a to_o believer_n and_o when_o they_o can_v so_o confident_o make_v application_n of_o his_o purchase_n to_o themselves_o and_o yet_o can_v tell_v when_o their_o heart_n be_v ever_o in_o the_o least_o measure_n ravish_v with_o the_o consideration_n of_o christ_n love_n neither_o do_v it_o ever_o relish_v to_o they_o nor_o be_v their_o heart_n ever_o in_o the_o least_o engage_v to_o he_o on_o that_o consideration_n use_v 4._o all_o of_o you_o who_o be_v lie_v in_o this_o natural_a condition_n and_o know_v not_o what_o be_v your_o hazard_n who_o be_v live_v in_o your_o profanity_n or_o at_o best_o in_o your_o hypocrisee_fw-mi civility_n formality_n not_o regenerate_v or_o bear_v again_o but_o have_v still_o the_o same_o faith_n and_o love_n that_o you_o be_v bear_v with_o and_o no_o other_o what_o be_v your_o posture_n you_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n but_o lie_v naked_a obnoxious_a to_o the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n condemn_v already_o and_o what_o if_o your_o breath_n go_v out_o in_o this_o doleful_a condition_n what_o if_o a_o palsy_n or_o apoplexy_n overtake_v you_o sudden_o what_o if_o a_o stone_n fall_v upon_o you_o ere_o you_o go_v nor_o into_o your_o own_o heart_n but_o it_o curse_v you_o you_o can_v look_v to_o the_o bar_n of_o god_n justice_n but_o the_o sentence_n meet_v you_o depart_v from_o i_o you_o curse_v this_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o think_v there_o be_v any_o here_o lie_v still_o in_o black_a nature_n and_o we_o be_v not_o sure_a all_o renew_v think_v then_o upon_o your_o case_n o_o that_o you_o see_v your_o posture_n the_o hand-writting_a come_n forth_o on_o the_o wall_n do_v not_o so_o affright_v belshazzar_n as_o this_o curse_n will_v affright_v you_o if_o it_o be_v believe_v and_o 2_o if_o this_o be_v your_o natural_a condition_n and_o if_o you_o believe_v it_o to_o be_v true_o so_o we_o will_v expostulat_v with_o you_o and_o even_o wonder_v 1._o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o so_o many_o of_o you_o lie_v still_o in_o your_o natural_a condition_n and_o endeavour_v not_o a_o change_n of_o your_o state_n it_o will_v be_v wonder_v at_o by_o angel_n and_o by_o all_o the_o elect_n yea_o and_o even_o by_o the_o reprobat_fw-la that_o never_o hear_v of_o christ_n that_o so_o many_o hear_v the_o gospel_n and_o have_v the_o offer_n of_o christ_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o stir_v up_o themselves_o to_o make_v use_n of_o he_o be_v it_o not_o a_o wonder_n that_o folk_n can_v sleep_v secure_a under_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n and_o bless_v themselves_o till_o their_o iniquity_n be_v find_v to_o be_v hateful_a to_o be_v in_o this_o condition_n and_o to_o sleep_v quiet_o under_o it_o will_v have_v a_o doleful_a wakn_n 2_o how_o be_v it_o that_o so_o few_o take_v pain_n to_o try_v how_o it_o be_v with_o they_o if_o many_o of_o you_o be_v lie_v under_o a_o decreet_a of_o
nature_n of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o how_o we_o may_v make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o how_o particular_o we_o shall_v beware_v of_o a_o carnal_a mistake_n in_o many_o about_o his_o intercession_n as_o if_o he_o be_v pray_v in_o heaven_n as_o a_o distinct_a party_n from_o god_n it_o be_v true_a he_o be_v a_o distinct_a person_n of_o the_o glorious_a trinity_n but_o not_o a_o distinct_a party_n in_o intercede_v as_o some_o ignorant_o conceive_v of_o he_o and_o therefore_o think_v he_o easy_a to_o have_v access_n to_o then_o the_o father_n and_o therefore_o will_v pray_v he_o to_o pray_v the_o father_n for_o they_o as_o if_o when_o they_o pray_v to_o he_o they_o be_v not_o pray_v to_o the_o father_n or_o as_o if_o there_o be_v not_o on_o object_n of_o worship_n this_o flow_v from_o ignorance_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o â—s_v unbecoming_a a_o christian_n for_o suppose_v â—_o man_n to_o rest_v by_o faith_n on_o christ_n the_o father_n be_v content_a and_o well_o please_v to_o pardon_v he_o as_o well_o as_o the_o son_n be_v because_o he_o be_v engage_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n so_o to_o do_v and_o if_o he_o be_v not_o a_o believer_n neither_o the_o father_n nor_o the_o son_n will_v respect_v he_o our_o use_n make_v of_o christ_n intercession_n do_v consist_v rather_o in_o the_o sound_n of_o our_o hope_n of_o speed_v with_o god_n on_o it_o as_o on_o his_o satisfaction_n then_o inpute_v up_o word_n of_o prayer_n to_o he_o to_o intercede_v for_o we_o as_o if_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o heaven_n as_o â—e_z do_v on_o earth_n or_o as_o one_o man_n intercee_v for_o another_o the_o point_n be_v sublim_o spiritual_a and_o some_o way_n tickle_v and_o i_o indeed_o fear_v to_o enter_v on_o more_o use_v at_o least_o for_o the_o time_n only_o remember_v that_o he_o be_v a_o intercessor_n and_o learn_v to_o make_v right_a use_n of_o he_o as_o a_o intercessor_n and_o the_o lord_n himself_o make_v the_o benefit_n of_o his_o intercession_n forthcoming_a to_o we_o sermon_n lxvi_o isaiah_n liii_o xii_o verse_n 12._o and_o he_o make_v intercession_n for_o the_o transgressor_n if_o christ_n be_v know_v in_o the_o greatness_n and_o vast_a extent_n of_o his_o worth_n o_o how_o lovely_a will_v he_o be_v how_o incomprehensible_o full_a be_v his_o office_n of_o ground_n of_o consolation_n to_o his_o people_n but_o the_o mean_a and_o low_a thought_n we_o have_v of_o he_o and_o the_o poor_a consolation_n we_o feed_v on_o do_v evidence_n much_o ignorance_n of_o he_o and_o much_o unbelief_n of_o the_o solid_a worth_n and_o fullness_n that_o be_v in_o he_o and_o in_o his_o priestly_a office_n in_o particular_a and_o yet_o o_o how_o full_a of_o consolation_n be_v it_o such_o a_o high_a priest_n become_v we_o heb._n 7.26_o even_o such_o a_o high_a priest_n â—s_a sinner_n have_v need_v of_o there_o have_v be_v much_o speak_v of_o one_o part_n of_o his_o priesthood_n to_o wit_n his_o sacrifice_n and_o offer_v up_o of_o himself_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n now_o ere_o the_o prophet_n close_o he_o give_v a_o hint_n of_o the_o other_o part_n of_o his_o priestly_a office_n to_o wit_n of_o his_o intercession_n a_o main_a commendation_n of_o christ_n fullness_n it_o be_v that_o which_o evidence_v he_o to_o be_v a_o saviour_n able_a to_o save_v to_o the_o uttermost_a such_o as_o come_v â—nto_n god_n through_o he_o because_o he_o live_v for_o ever_o to_o make_v intercession_n for_o they_o as_o it_o be_v heb._n 5.25_o and_o it_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o the_o consolation_n of_o god_n people_n that_o jesus_n christ_n have_v this_o office_n by_o the_o father_n allowance_n and_o that_o it_o be_v article_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n betwixt_o the_o father_n and_o he_o that_o as_o he_o shall_v pour_v out_o his_o soul_n unto_o death_n be_v number_v with_o transgressor_n bear_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o so_o he_o shall_v make_v intercession_n for_o the_o transgressor_n therefore_o heb._n 7.21_o he_o be_v say_v to_o be_v make_v a_o high_a priest_n with_o a_o oath_n by_o he_o that_o say_v unto_o he_o psal_n 110.4_o the_o lord_n swear_v and_o will_v not_o repent_v thou_o be_v a_o priest_n for_o ever_o after_o the_o order_n of_o melhisedeck_v he_o be_v a_o priest_n on_o earth_n by_o offer_v himself_o in_o a_o sacrifice_n and_o by_o intercede_v for_o elect_a sinner_n and_o he_o be_v a_o priest_n in_o heaven_n by_o his_o intercession_n and_o therefore_o be_v prefer_v to_o all_o the_o priest_n on_o earth_n who_o do_v not_o continue_v by_o reason_n of_o death_n but_o he_o continue_v for_o ever_o and_o none_o can_v start_v he_o wrong_n to_o speak_v so_o with_o reverence_n of_o he_o we_o show_v in_o our_o enter_v on_o this_o verse_n that_o this_o his_o intercession_n be_v not_o to_o be_v a_o stricted_a to_o his_o prayer_n on_o the_o cross_n that_o be_v but_o a_o evidence_n or_o particular_a instance_n of_o it_o but_o it_o take_v in_o his_o whole_a intercession_n because_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o prophet_n here_o be_v to_o hold_v out_o as_o what_o god_n promise_v to_o he_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n so_o on_o the_o other_o what_o he_o intercee_v for_o and_o so_o his_o intercession_n look_v on_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n take_v in_o his_o whole_a intercession_n especial_o as_o it_o be_v go_v about_o in_o heaven_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n once_o for_o all_o offer_v up_o when_o he_o be_v on_o earth_n we_o observe_v the_o last_o day_n that_o according_a to_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n the_o same_o god_n with_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o to_o have_v this_o imagination_n of_o he_o that_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v to_o he_o as_o to_o another_o party_n or_o not_o as_o god_n be_v to_o make_v he_o another_o thing_n which_o be_v unbecoming_a that_o apprehension_n and_o estimation_n that_o we_o ought_v to_o have_v of_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o bless_a godhead_n 2._o beware_v of_o think_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a facility_n or_o easiness_n to_o have_v access_n to_o the_o mediator_n then_o to_o have_v access_n to_o god_n or_o that_o it_o be_v more_o easy_a to_o have_v access_n to_o the_o second_o person_n of_o the_o trinity_n then_o to_o the_o first_o or_o three_o person_n we_o be_v afraid_a that_o there_o be_v mistake_v here_o also_o as_o if_o the_o mediator_n be_v more_o easy_a to_o be_v deal_v with_o than_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n or_o as_o if_o there_o be_v more_o easy_a access_n unto_o he_o whereas_o he_o be_v the_o same_o god_n and_o so_o consider_v there_o be_v the_o same_o ground_n whereon_o sinner_n may_v have_v access_n to_o the_o father_n as_o to_o the_o son_n for_o if_o we_o look_v on_o a_o sinner_n
2._o the_o formal_a object_n of_o our_o worship_n be_v christ_n godhead_n and_o we_o pray_v to_o he_o on_o that_o account_n because_o he_o be_v the_o eternal_a infinite_a omni-potent_a supreme_a etc._n etc._n in_o respect_n of_o his_o divine_a nature_n 3._o in_o our_o worship_v of_o this_o mediator_n on_o this_o account_n or_o ground_n the_o mind_n may_v be_v sway_v to_o it_o on_o consideration_n that_o the_o person_n who_o we_o worship_v as_o god_n be_v also_o mediator_n and_o man_n and_o this_o propose_v no_o new_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o give_v a_o motive_n to_o consider_v he_o be_v not_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n because_o it_o hold_v he_o out_o as_o humble_v and_o suffer_v yet_o our_o so_o consider_v he_o strengthen_v faith_n to_o expect_v what_o we_o need_v from_o he_o and_o it_o induce_v to_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o engage_v to_o love_v he_o even_o as_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n in_o prayer_n to_o god_n sometime_o use_v that_o title_n our_o redeemer_n that_o bring_v we_o out_o of_o egypt_n yet_o the_o ground_n and_o account_v on_o which_o they_o worship_v he_o be_v his_o be_v the_o eternal_a infinite_a and_o omnipotent_a god_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o his_o work_n be_v but_o motive_n to_o induce_v they_o to_o worship_v he_o and_o to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n in_o expect_v what_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o alone_a object_n of_o divine_a worship_n yet_o to_o consider_v that_o he_o be_v god_n and_o yet_o die_v be_v a_o inducement_n to_o we_o to_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o it_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n to_o consider_v that_o as_o he_o be_v god_n so_o also_o man_n one_o that_o die_v and_o have_v also_o enter_v himself_o in_o this_o near_a relation_n to_o we_o for_o the_o 3d._n which_o will_v help_v to_o clear_v the_o former_a that_o be_v the_o form_n of_o such_o petition_n as_o may_v be_v use_v in_o petition_v the_o mediator_n we_o need_v the_o less_o to_o stand_v on_o it_o if_o as_o have_v be_v say_v we_o hold_v we_o by_o these_o ground_n 1._o that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n 2._o that_o this_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n be_v god_n 3._o that_o in_o worship_v the_o mediator_n we_o do_v not_o divine_v that_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n yet_o we_o shall_v speak_v a_o word_n for_o clear_v 1._o what_o form_n seem_v most_o allowable_a here_o 2._o for_o clear_v of_o somewhat_o which_o we_o hint_v at_o the_o other_o day_n anent_o one_o particular_a form_n of_o petition_n first_o then_o this_o be_v clear_a that_o we_o may_v pray_v direct_o to_o the_o mediator_n betwixt_o that_o which_o be_v consider_v by_o we_o in_o the_o act_n of_o our_o worship_n and_o that_o which_o be_v the_o object_n of_o that_o act_n and_o as_o we_o say_v the_o motive_n that_o induce_v we_o to_o that_o act_n be_v the_o uptake_n of_o he_o as_o mediator_n 3._o that_o he_o may_v be_v design_v mediator_n and_o redeemer_n and_o may_v get_v these_o name_n and_o title_n because_o they_o serve_v to_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n and_o to_o warm_v our_o affection_n to_o he_o even_o as_o when_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n pray_v to_o god_n they_o remember_v that_o he_o be_v their_o redeemer_n and_o deliverer_n and_o have_v wrought_v so_o and_o so_o for_o they_o and_o these_o be_v motive_n to_o induce_v they_o to_o pray_v and_o serve_v to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n in_o pray_v to_o he_o yet_o the_o ground_n and_o account_v on_o which_o they_o worship_v he_o be_v his_o own_o infinite_a glorious_a majesty_n 4._o it_o be_v clear_a that_o when_o the_o mediator_n be_v be_v invocat_n with_o they_o both_o answer_v 1._o we_o say_v that_o the_o usemaking_a and_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n be_v not_o to_o be_v restrict_v to_o this_o manner_n of_o expression_n or_o form_n of_o petition_n and_o it_o be_v for_o this_o end_n that_o we_o observe_v it_o for_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o only_o we_o make_v use_v of_o christ_n intercession_n when_o intercession_n whereby_o it_o be_v improven_v and_o one_o may_v be_v use_v this_o form_n of_o word_n and_o yet_o not_o be_v improve_n his_o intercession_n and_o another_o may_v not_o use_v this_o form_n of_o word_n and_o yet_o be_v improve_n it_o when_o faith_n be_v exercise_v on_o it_o and_o the_o refore_o to_o improve_v his_o intercession_n be_v rather_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n to_o rest_v on_o it_o then_o in_o any_o such_o form_n of_o word_n to_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o we_o will_v not_o think_v that_o christ_n intercession_n be_v not_o make_v use_n of_o when_o the_o nomination_n of_o the_o person_n may_v strengthen_v faith_n yet_o it_o be_v never_o to_o be_v so_o understand_v as_o if_o they_o be_v a_o different_a object_n of_o worship_n or_o as_o if_o there_o be_v less_o access_n to_o christ_n intercession_n or_o to_o the_o benefit_n thereof_o in_o the_o one_o form_n then_o in_o the_o other_o yet_o 3._o we_o say_v there_o be_v often_o a_o readiness_n to_o miscarry_v in_o this_o form_n of_o petition_n for_o you_o will_v consider_v and_o examine_v 1._o if_o it_o do_v not_o often_o flow_v from_o a_o misinform_v judgement_n within_o and_o if_o it_o have_v not_o a_o tendency_n in_o it_o to_o obscure_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n and_o ready_o dispose_v to_o or_o flow_v from_o this_o opinion_n that_o pray_v such_o a_o form_n of_o word_n though_o infirmity_n in_o the_o usemaking_a of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o god_n respect_n that_o wherever_o it_o be_v and_o under_o such_o a_o form_n there_o may_v be_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o soul-sensibleness_a that_o the_o person_n have_v no_o access_n to_o god_n but_o through_o a_o mediator_n 2._o a_o rest_v on_o the_o mediator_n for_o acceptance_n and_o where_o these_o two_o be_v though_o the_o form_n be_v use_v it_o may_v be_v accept_v although_o if_o faith_n be_v though_o this_o form_n be_v not_o it_o mar_v not_o the_o person_n acceptation_n for_o no_o question_n many_o of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n both_o before_o christ_n come_v and_o sometime_o after_o have_v not_o that_o distinctness_n in_o usemaking_a of_o the_o intercession_n of_o christ_n as_o now_o be_v hold_v forth_o as_o christ_n say_v to_o his_o disciple_n john_n 16.24_o hitherto_o you_o have_v ask_v nothing_o in_o my_o name_n and_o cornelius_n mention_v act._n 10._o and_o other_o their_o prayer_n be_v accept_v of_o god_n though_o they_o rest_v by_o faith_n on_o the_o mediator_n in_o a_o more_o confuse_a dark_a way_n and_o have_v not_o that_o distinctnesse_n in_o they_o appearance_n of_o or_o tendency_n to_o the_o divide_v of_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n or_o the_o mediator_n from_o his_o godhead_n especial_o in_o pray_v with_o or_o for_o other_o where_o it_o may_v stumble_v more_o then_o edify_v and_o when_o it_o be_v use_v it_o will_v be_v very_o warry_o and_o well_o guard_v remember_v always_o that_o the_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n consist_v more_o in_o faith_n rest_v on_o it_o and_o in_o make_v address_n to_o god_n through_o he_o and_o according_a to_o the_o usual_a manner_n of_o the_o scripture_n then_o in_o any_o other_o thing_n or_o way_n whatsoever_o the_o 4_o thing_n we_o propose_v to_o speak_v a_o word_n to_o be_v some_o practical_a doubt_n or_o question_n that_o may_v puzzle_v some_o christian_n who_o have_v observe_v what_o have_v be_v speak_v on_o this_o subject_n may_v be_v ready_a to_o think_v and_o say_v that_o the_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n be_v to_o they_o a_o great_a mystery_n than_o ever_o it_o be_v many_o time_n they_o have_v pray_v and_o mind_v it_o not_o and_o when_o they_o mind_v it_o they_o be_v not_o distinct_a in_o their_o improve_n of_o it_o and_o they_o be_v never_o like_o aright_o to_o mind_v it_o for_o answer_n 1._o you_o will_v look_v to_o what_o be_v essential_a to_o the_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o make_v that_o sure_a and_o if_o you_o ask_v what_o it_o be_v it_o take_v in_o these_o four_o which_o where_o they_o be_v his_o intercession_n be_v make_v use_n of_o though_o there_o may_v be_v unclearnesse_n in_o many_o other_o thing_n 1._o that_o a_o person_n pray_v to_o god_n that_o he_o be_v call_v on_o and_o worship_v 2._o that_o our_o address_n be_v not_o found_v on_o any_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o but_o that_o there_o be_v a_o renounce_n of_o our_o own_o righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v with_o daniel_n chap._n 9.18_o we_o do_v not_o present_v our_o supplication_n unto_o thou_o for_o our_o own_o righteousness_n etc._n etc._n about_o the_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o the_o way_n of_o improve_n of_o christ_n intercession_n yet_o if_o they_o call_v upon_o god_n if_o they_o renounce_v their_o own_o righteousness_n not_o know_v any_o ground_n in_o themselves_o to_o lean_v to_o or_o to_o put_v up_o their_o suit_n on_o and_o make_v use_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o acceptance_n with_o god_n and_o if_o it_o be_v ask_v they_o what_o give_v you_o ground_n to_o expect_v a_o hear_n of_o your_o prayer_n they_o will_v answer_v even_o the_o same_o that_o give_v we_o ground_n to_o expect_v pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o we_o will_v never_o expect_v to_o win_v to_o either_o without_o a_o mediator_n they_o be_v among_o they_o who_o be_v improve_n chrisâ—s_v intercession_n and_o such_o will_v silence_v and_o we_fw-mi other_o question_n if_o they_o be_v clear_a in_o this_o 2._o we_o answer_v that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o real_a use_n make_v of_o christ_n intercession_n and_o it_o may_v be_v account_v intercession_n be_v not_o so_o distinct_o as_o such_o consider_v by_o they_o in_o their_o so_o do_v for_o they_o do_v not_o distinct_o take_v up_o he_o as_o christ_n say_v hithereo_n you_o have_v ask_v nothing_o in_o my_o name_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o actual_a rest_v on_o he_o by_o faith_n and_o their_o prayer_n be_v no_o doubt_n accept_v of_o god_n he_o not_o be_v so_o distinct_o know_v to_o be_v the_o intercessor_n as_o now_o he_o be_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v require_v a_o more_o distinct_a use_n make_v of_o he_o now_o and_o not_o a_o rest_a on_o he_o indefinite_o but_o particular_o and_o distinct_o he_o be_v clear_o reveal_v now_o to_o be_v the_o mediator_n 3._o we_o answer_v that_o believer_n may_v sometime_o be_v make_v use_n of_o christ_n intercession_n in_o
