unto_o they_o divine_a worship_n we_o must_v careful_o abstain_v again_o unlawful_a if_o the_o divine_a worship_n of_o saint_n be_v here_o condemn_v then_o much_o more_o be_v the_o worship_v of_o their_o relic_n then_o also_o be_v their_o institute_n and_o observe_v fast_a day_n and_o holy_a day_n unto_o their_o saint_n here_o just_o reprove_v neither_o can_v our_o church_n herein_o be_v like_a yet_o he_o be_v subject_a to_o such_o infirmity_n as_o agree_v to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n as_o hunger_n thirst_n weariness_n etc._n etc._n yea_o this_o be_v one_o part_n of_o his_o humiliation_n to_o become_v not_o only_a man_n but_o man_n with_o infirmity_n and_o therefore_o though_o he_o can_v by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o godhead_n have_v preserve_v himself_o forty_o year_n without_o meat_n or_o drink_v as_o well_o as_o forty_o day_n yet_o that_o he_o may_v abase_v himself_o to_o the_o low_a degree_n of_o a_o servant_n he_o be_v content_a to_o sustain_v the_o infirmite_n of_o his_o humane_a nature_n in_o be_v a_o hunger_a and_o that_o for_o these_o cause_n first_o hunger_a to_o confirm_v unto_o we_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o manhood_n for_o some_o man_n may_v say_v it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n for_o he_o to_o fast_v forty_o day_n and_o forty_o night_n see_v he_o have_v not_o a_o true_a body_n but_o only_o the_o show_n and_o shadow_n of_o a_o body_n therefore_o to_o show_v that_o he_o be_v true_a man_n and_o have_v a_o true_a natural_a body_n as_o we_o have_v he_o be_v content_a to_o sustain_v hunger_n as_o we_o do_v and_o that_o true_o second_o that_o hereby_o he_o may_v cast_v a_o object_n before_o the_o devil_n to_o cause_v he_o to_o be_v the_o more_o eager_a and_o violent_a in_o his_o temptation_n and_o to_o show_v his_o malice_n in_o full_a measure_n against_o he_o for_o by_o virtue_n of_o his_o office_n whereto_o he_o be_v now_o call_v christ_n be_v to_o encounter_v with_o satan_n our_o common_a enemy_n and_o therefore_o give_v he_o not_o only_o the_o advantage_n of_o the_o place_n but_o also_o the_o opportunity_n of_o estate_n that_o satan_n perceive_v his_o infirmity_n of_o bodily_a hunger_n may_v thereby_o be_v embolden_v to_o give_v the_o more_o violent_a assault_n upon_o he_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o second_o part_n of_o christ_n preparation_n to_o his_o combat_n verse_n 3._o then_o come_v to_o he_o the_o tempter_n and_o say_v if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n command_v that_o these_o stone_n may_v be_v make_v bread_n here_o begin_v this_o strange_a combat_n between_o our_o saviour_n christ_n and_o the_o devil_n consist_v of_o three_o great_a conflict_n the_o first_o whereof_o be_v contain_v in_o this_o verse_n and_o the_o next_o be_v indeed_o the_o great_a of_o they_o all_o as_o after_o shall_v appear_v in_o this_o temptation_n observe_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o satin_n preparation_n to_o this_o conflict_n second_o the_o temptation_n itself_o three_o christ_n answer_n and_o repulse_n the_o gracious_a protection_n of_o god_n against_o his_o assault_n if_o any_o of_o we_o have_v our_o dwell_n among_o lion_n bear_n or_o tiger_n which_o be_v hungerbit_n and_o therefore_o will_v seek_v greedy_o for_o their_o prey_n we_o will_v be_v sure_a never_o to_o go_v out_o of_o our_o dwell_a house_n without_o preparation_n for_o rescue_n &_o defence_n whereby_o we_o may_v avoid_v their_o danger_n well_o though_o we_o have_v no_o such_o wild_a beast_n to_o endanger_v our_o body_n yet_o our_o soul_n be_v daily_o assault_v by_o a_o more_o deadly_a enemy_n even_o the_o devil_n who_o continual_a study_n and_o practice_n be_v by_o temptation_n to_o devour_v we_o 1._o pet._n 5._o 8._o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v always_o be_v watchful_a against_o temptation_n put_v upon_o we_o this_o a_o man_n will_v not_o think_v that_o herein_o he_o shall_v intend_v any_o hurt_n to_o christ_n or_o to_o his_o church_n but_o in_o very_a truth_n his_o drift_n herein_o be_v to_o destroy_v paul_n be_v grieve_v at_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o foul_a spirit_n that_o be_v in_o the_o maid_n though_o in_o itself_o a_o most_o worthy_a truth_n to_o wit_n 18._o that_o they_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o the_o most_o high_a god_n which_o show_v unto_o man_n the_o way_n of_o salvation_n further_o in_o compare_v our_o evangelist_n matthew_n with_o s._n luke_n there_o may_v seem_v some_o first_o the_o devil_n come_v to_o christ_n and_o bid_v he_o if_o he_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n command_v all_o the_o stone_n which_o he_o see_v round_o about_o he_o to_o be_v make_v bread_n this_o write_a word_n of_o god_n right_o wield_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o faith_n be_v the_o most_o sufficient_a weapon_n for_o the_o repel_v of_o satan_n and_o the_o vanquish_a of_o he_o in_o all_o his_o temptation_n hence_o paul_n call_v it_o 17._o the_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n because_o it_o serve_v not_o only_o for_o our_o defence_n but_o also_o to_o wound_v satan_n and_o to_o put_v he_o to_o flight_n the_o use_n i._o this_o fact_n of_o christ_n do_v discover_v and_o condemn_v the_o damnable_a practice_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o lock_n up_o the_o word_n of_o god_n from_o their_o people_n in_o a_o unknowen_a tongue_n and_o commend_v unto_o they_o for_o their_o defence_n against_o spiritual_a enemy_n other_o device_n of_o their_o own_o as_o holy_a water_n cross_v cross_n etc._n etc._n which_o they_o high_o commend_v as_o mean_n of_o special_a strength_n and_o force_n to_o vanquish_v the_o devil_n when_o as_o indeed_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o only_a true_a and_o trusty_a weapon_n whereof_o while_o they_o deprive_v their_o people_n they_o send_v they_o forth_o naked_a and_o unarmed_a to_o encounter_v with_o satan_n second_o here_o also_o behold_v the_o miserable_a estate_n of_o all_o those_o that_o either_o through_o covetousness_n or_o any_o other_o profaneness_n be_v draw_v to_o neglect_v or_o contemn_v the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n to_o cast_v himself_o down_o wherein_o we_o see_v the_o special_a providence_n of_o god_n over_o christ_n jesus_n in_o all_o these_o temptation_n restrain_v his_o enemy_n in_o the_o thing_n he_o most_o desire_a and_o the_o same_o providence_n do_v he_o still_o continue_v over_o his_o church_n for_o the_o effectual_a preservation_n of_o christ_n member_n in_o all_o their_o temptation_n the_o
