troublesome_a one_o whether_o the_o gospel_n be_v absolute_a or_o no_o whether_o gospel_n be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o work_n whether_o it_o have_v precept_n or_o threaten_n now_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o question_n be_v not_o whether_o the_o gospel_n be_v so_o absolute_a that_o it_o require_v not_o faith_n as_o a_o condition_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v so_o absolute_a as_o that_o it_o exclude_v all_o repentance_n and_o holiness_n he_o be_v a_o infant_n in_o scripture_n that_o
think_v so_o but_o whether_o the_o gospel_n do_v promise_v eternal_a life_n to_o a_o man_n for_o any_o dignity_n intention_n merit_n work_n or_o any_o disposition_n in_o we_o under_o any_o distinction_n or_o notion_n whatsoever_o or_o only_o to_o faith_n apprehend_v christ_n now_o the_o answer_n be_v that_o if_o we_o take_v the_o gospel_n large_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o they_o press_v duty_n of_o mortification_n &_o sanctification_n threaten_v those_o that_o do_v not_o so_o but_o if_o you_o take_v the_o gospel_n strict_o than_o it_o hold_v forth_o nothing_o but_o remission_n of_o sin_n through_o christ_n not_o require_v any_o other_o duty_n as_o a_o condition_n or_o use_v any_o threaten_a word_n thereunto_o but_o than_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v to_o which_o be_v repentance_n reduce_v be_v it_o a_o duty_n of_o the_o law_n or_o a_o duty_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o the_o law_n strictlytaken_v it_o can_v be_v because_o that_o admit_v none_o must_v it_o not_o therefore_o be_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o i_o find_v in_o this_o particular_a different_a either_o expression_n or_o opinion_n and_o general_o the_o lutheran_n divine_n do_v oppose_v the_o antinomian_o upon_o this_o very_a ground_n that_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o a_o sermon_n of_o repentance_n nor_o do_v exhort_v thereunto_o but_o rome_n 3._o 27._o where_o be_v boast_v then_o it_o be_v exclude_v by_o what_o law_n of_o work_n nay_o but_o by_o the_o law_n of_o faith_n i_o proceed_v to_o the_o handle_n of_o this_o question_n whether_o the_o gosspel_n preach_v repentance_n or_o no_o see_v this_o make_v the_o great_a commotion_n at_o first_o between_o the_o orthodox_n and_o antinomian_o i_o shall_v dispatch_v this_o in_o few_o word_n 1._o the_o word_n repentance_n be_v take_v sometime_o large_o and_o sometime_o faith_n strict_o when_o it_o be_v take_v large_o it_o comprehend_v faith_n in_o it_o and_o be_v the_o whole_a turnign_a unto_o god_n rev._n 2._o 5._o sometime_o it_o be_v use_v strict_o for_o sorrow_n about_o sin_n and_o so_o distinguish_v from_o faith_n thus_o they_o repent_v not_o that_o they_o may_v believe_v and_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v put_v together_o now_o all_o the_o while_n a_o man_n have_v trouble_v and_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n without_o faith_n it_o be_v like_o the_o body_n without_o the_o soul_n yea_o it_o carry_v a_o man_n with_o cain_n and_o judas_n into_o the_o very_a pit_n of_o despair_n when_o a_o man_n see_v how_o much_o be_v against_o he_o and_o not_o how_o much_o be_v for_o he_o it_o can_v but_o crush_v and_o weigh_v he_o down_o to_o the_o ground_n the_o tear_n of_o repentance_n be_v like_o those_o water_n very_o bitter_a till_o christ_n sweeten_v they_o 2._o consider_v this_o that_o the_o law_n be_v never_o mere_o and_o sole_o administer_v nor_o yet_o the_o gospel_n but_o they_o be_v twin_n that_o be_v inseparable_o ministry_n unite_v in_o the_o word_n and_o ministry_n howsoever_o strict_o take_v there_o be_v a_o vast_a gulf_n of_o opposition_n between_o each_o other_o yet_o in_o their_o use_n they_o become_v exceed_o subservient_fw-fr and_o helpful_a mutual_o it_o be_v not_o good_a for_o the_o law_n to_o be_v alone_o nor_o yet_o the_o gospel_n now_o the_o old_a antinomian_o they_o teach_v repentance_n by_o the_o gospel_n only_o that_o so_o the_o law_n may_v be_v whole_o exclude_v thus_o they_o do_v not_o consider_v what_o useful_a subserviencie_n they_o have_v to_o one_o another_o the_o law_n direct_v command_v and_o humble_v the_o gospel_n that_o comfort_v refresh_v and_o support_v and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a wisdom_n in_o a_o christian_a when_o he_o have_v a_o eye_n upon_o both_o many_o be_v cast_v down_o because_o they_o only_o consider_v the_o perfection_n of_o the_o law_n and_o their_o inability_n thereunto_o on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o grow_v secure_a and_o loose_a by_o attend_v to_o freegrace_n only_o i_o do_v acknowledge_v that_o freegrace_n will_v melt_v the_o heart_n into_o kindness_n and_o the_o fire_n will_v melt_v as_o well_o as_o the_o hammer_n batter_v into_o piece_n but_o yet_o even_o this_o can_v be_v do_v without_o some_o use_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o therefore_o be_v there_o be_v such_o a_o near_a link_n between_o both_o these_o gospel_n in_o their_o practical_a use_n we_o need_v not_o with_o some_o learned_a man_n make_v two_o commandment_n of_o the_o gospel_n only_o to_o wit_n the_o command_n to_o believe_v and_o the_o other_o command_n to_o repent_v neither_o need_v we_o with_o other_o make_v these_o command_n appendix_n to_o the_o gospel_n but_o conclude_v thus_o that_o see_v faith_n and_o repentance_n have_v something_o initial_a in_o they_o and_o something_o consummative_a in_o they_o therefore_o they_o be_v both_o wrought_v by_o law_n and_o gospel_n also_o so_o that_o as_o they_o say_v there_o be_v a_o legal_a repentance_n and_o a_o evangelical_a so_o we_o may_v say_v there_o be_v a_o legal_a faith_n which_o consist_v in_o believe_v of_o the_o threaten_n &_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o there_o be_v a_o evangelical_a faith_n which_o be_v in_o apply_v of_o christ_n in_o the_o promise_n so_o that_o legal_a faith_n and_o repentance_n may_v be_v call_v so_o initial_o and_o when_o it_o be_v evangelical_a it_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v consummate_a if_o therefore_o you_o ask_v whether_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o gospel_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v by_o both_o and_o that_o these_o must_v not_o be_v separate_v one_o from_o the_o other_o in_o the_o command_n of_o these_o duty_n hence_o four_a unbelief_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n as_o well_o as_o against_o gospel_n the_o gospel_n indeed_o the_o gospel_n that_o do_v manifest_a and_o declare_v the_o object_n of_o justify_v faith_n but_o the_o law_n condemn_v he_o that_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o he_o therefore_o moses_n and_o the_o law_n be_v say_v to_o bear_v witness_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o accuse_v the_o jew_n for_o refuse_v the_o messiah_n the_o law_n that_o require_v belief_n in_o whatsoever_o god_n shall_v reveal_v the_o gospel_n that_o make_v know_v christ_n and_o then_o the_o law_n be_v as_o it_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o gospel_n do_v fasten_v a_o command_n upon_o we_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n this_o be_v true_a if_o you_o take_v the_o law_n strict_o and_o separate_o from_o moses_n his_o administration_n of_o it_o but_o if_o you_o take_v it_o large_o as_o it_o be_v deliver_v by_o moses_n than_o faith_n in_o christ_n be_v immediate_o command_v there_o though_o obscure_o because_o as_o be_v prove_v it_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n you_o see_v then_o that_o as_o in_o the_o transfiguration_n there_o be_v christ_n and_o moses_n together_o in_o glory_n so_o likewise_o may_v the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v together_o in_o their_o glory_n and_o it_o be_v through_o our_o folly_n when_o we_o make_v they_o practical_o to_o hinder_v one_o another_o though_o all_o this_o be_v true_a yet_o if_o the_o gospel_n be_v take_v strict_o it_o saviour_n be_v not_o a_o doctrine_n of_o repentance_n or_o holy_a work_n but_o a_o mere_a gracious_a promise_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o break_a heart_n for_o sin_n and_o do_v comprehend_v no_o more_o than_o the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o a_o saviour_n it_o be_v true_a learned_a man_n do_v sometime_o speak_v otherwise_o call_v faith_n and_o repentance_n the_o two_o evangelicall_n command_v but_o then_o they_o use_v the_o word_n more_o large_o for_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n but_o in_o a_o strict_a sense_n its_o only_a a_o promise_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o benefit_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n we_o may_v say_v the_o gospel_n do_v not_o terrify_v or_o accuse_v indeed_o there_o be_v woeful_a threaten_n to_o he_o that_o reject_v christ_n yea_o more_o severe_a then_o to_o he_o that_o refuse_v moses_n but_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o law_n join_v in_o practical_a use_n with_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n also_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o savour_n of_o death_n unto_o many_o this_o arise_v not_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o from_o the_o law_n that_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o gospel_n so_o that_o he_o be_v already_o condemn_v by_o the_o law_n for_o not_o believe_v in_o christ_n he_o need_v to_o be_v condemn_v again_o by_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o say_v may_v not_o the_o suffering_n
love_n he_o need_v no_o law_n and_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o chrysostome_n have_v some_o such_o hyperbolical_a expression_n upon_o the_o word_n follow_v the_o law_n be_v not_o put_v for_o the_o lay_v upon_o christ_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n for_o we_o yet_o he_o do_v it_o out_o of_o love_n it_o be_v dispute_v whether_o christ_n have_v a_o command_n lay_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o father_n strict_o so_o call_v and_o howsoever_o the_o arrian_n from_o the_o grant_n of_o this_o do_v infer_v christ_n absolute_a inferiority_n to_o the_o father_n yet_o our_o orthodox_n divine_n do_v
