thou_o will_v beat_v i_o with_o it_o here_o i_o lie_v now_o have_v show_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o submission_n to_o help_v we_o in_o the_o thing_n for_o this_o be_v the_o bitter_a pill_n of_o all_o other_o to_o the_o gracious_a heart_n take_v these_o thing_n 1_o consider_v that_o god_n in_o all_o the_o break_v forth_o of_o corruption_n in_o he_o have_v a_o design_n that_o lie_v deep_a than_o the_o devil_n design_n or_o the_o design_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n the_o devil_n design_n in_o put_v forward_o some_o corruption_n be_v to_o shake_v faith_n the_o heart_n design_n to_o please_v itself_o god_n have_v a_o design_n lie_v deep_a and_o when_o the_o time_n of_o mercy_n be_v come_v and_o the_o work_n ripe_a for_o god_n to_o put_v his_o design_n in_o execution_n god_n design_n which_o lie_v as_o a_o mine_n at_o the_o bottom_n will_v spring_v and_o blow_v up_o the_o corruption_n and_o the_o design_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o man_n heart_n therein_o altogether_o this_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o case_n of_o peter_n in_o his_o fall_n be_v a_o great_a design_n of_o satan_n another_o of_o his_o cowardly_a heart_n but_o christ_n have_v a_o design_n lay_v deep_o which_o afterward_o take_v place_n

now_o the_o law_n have_v take_v satisfaction_n for_o all_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o the_o equity_n of_o the_o law_n require_v they_o shall_v be_v absolve_v from_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n so_o that_o the_o law_n be_v of_o the_o side_n of_o those_o person_n 2_o it_o make_v the_o jury_n of_o conscience_n of_o a_o man_n side_n for_o say_v conscience_n do_v the_o case_n lie_v thus_o that_o i_o be_o in_o christ_n than_o not_o guilty_a not_o guilty_a though_o once_o i_o be_v guilty_a yet_o christ_n have_v take_v the_o guilt_n away_o and_o therefore_o now_o not_o guilty_a not_o guilty_a 3_o it_o make_v the_o judge_n of_o a_o man_n side_n for_o say_v god_n the_o judge_n be_v it_o so_o that_o this_o party_n be_v in_o my_o son_n christ_n then_o be_v he_o a_o hence_o because_o thou_o can_v not_o pray_v talk_v of_o divine_a thing_n open_a and_o explain_v scripture_n as_o another_o can_v or_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o so_o humble_a mortify_v self-denying_a let_v i_o tell_v thou_o that_o as_o gift_n of_o themselves_o though_o a_o man_n do_v ever_o so_o excel_v in_o they_o be_v no_o evidence_n of_o a_o man_n be_v in_o christ_n though_o a_o man_n have_v the_o gift_n of_o a_o angel_n yet_o no_o evidence_n for_o herein_o he_o have_v no_o more_o than_o the_o devil_n have_v who_o be_v a_o angel_n so_o the_o want_n of_o gift_n if_o this_o be_v all_o thy_o doubt_n do_v not_o at_o all_o evidence_n the_o contrary_a i_o pray_v what_o excellency_n of_o gift_n be_v there_o in_o babe_n and_o suckling_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o wise_a and_o prudent_a and_o yet_o babe_n and_o suckling_n be_v in_o christ_n when_o the_o wise_a and_o prudent_a be_v not_o what_o gift_n in_o the_o foolish_a thing_n of_o the_o world_n and_o base_a thing_n and_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o i.e._n of_o no_o account_n at_o all_o in_o the_o eye_n and_o esteem_v of_o man_n and_o yet_o these_o have_v god_n choose_v and_o they_o be_v in_o christ_n who_o of_o god_n be_v make_v unto_o they_o wisdom_n etc._n etc._n when_o the_o wise_a thing_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o scribe_n and_o disputer_n of_o the_o world_n be_v set_v by_o 1_o cor._n 1.27_o 28_o 29_o 30._o object_n but_o say_v the_o soul_n my_o doubt_n be_v not_o so_o much_o about_o gift_n as_o grace_n i_o do_v not_o find_v myself_o to_o grow_v in_o grace_n in_o humility_n mortification_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o beget_v all_o my_o fear_n answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v poor_a soul_n 1_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a growth_n a_o growth_n in_o the_o branch_n and_o a_o growth_n in_o the_o root_n as_o a_o tree_n grow_v sometime_o upward_o in_o branch_n sometime_o downward_o in_o root_n so_o thy_o grace_n grow_v sometime_o in_o branch_n as_o in_o love_n humility_z brokenness_n of_o heart_n etc._n etc._n sometime_o in_o root_n as_o when_o thy_o faith_n grow_v more_o and_o root_n itself_o in_o christ_n and_o the_o promise_n more_o now_o how_o be_v it_o with_o thou_o soul_n thou_o do_v not_o grow_v in_o branch_n as_o once_o thou_o do_v that_o be_v thou_o do_v not_o find_v such_o a_o lively_a heart_n
such_o strong_a affection_n such_o a_o flow_a of_o heavenly_a desire_n so_o much_o brokenness_n of_o heart_n love_v to_o the_o brethren_n etc._n etc._n but_o do_v thou_o grow_v in_o the_o root_n do_v thy_o want_n of_o these_o thing_n cause_v thou_o to_o root_v thyself_o more_o in_o the_o free_a promise_n so_o as_o that_o now_o thou_o do_v more_o and_o often_o go_v out_o to_o god_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o general_a promise_n than_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o thou_o to_o do_v when_o thou_o have_v and_o find_v in_o thou_o these_o thing_n then_o soul_n believe_v it_o thou_o do_v grow_v and_o though_o thy_o growth_n be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o sense_n as_o it_o will_v be_v do_v thou_o grow_v more_o in_o the_o branch_n yet_o be_v it_o a_o better_a a_o sure_a growth_n that_o tree_n stand_v fast_o that_o grow_v much_o in_o the_o root_n 2_o thou_o complain_v thou_o do_v not_o grow_v look_v soul_n upon_o thy_o growth_n in_o the_o right_a season_n of_o grow_v there_o be_v a_o season_n of_o grow_v come_v to_o a_o tree_n in_o the_o spring_n or_o summer_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o all_o over_o green_a full_a of_o sap_n leaf_n and_o fruit_n but_o come_v to_o that_o tree_n in_o the_o winter_n and_o you_o see_v none_o of_o all_o this_o but_o the_o tree_n look_v as_o though_o it_o be_v dead_a and_o wither_a why_o so_o the_o spring_n and_o summer_n be_v the_o season_n of_o grow_v but_o the_o winter_n be_v not_o the_o season_n so_o etc._n etc._n 3_o take_v in_o a_o pretty_a distance_n of_o time_n when_o thou_o will_v judge_v of_o thy_o growth_n my_o meaning_n be_v when_o thou_o will_v pass_v a_o judgement_n upon_o thy_o growth_n of_o grace_n whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o much_o do_v not_o compare_v thyself_o to_o day_n with_o what_o thou_o be_v yesterday_o or_o a_o week_n ago_o but_o take_v in_o some_o year_n and_o then_o thou_o will_v see_v thy_o growth_n better_o in_o nature_n growth_n be_v not_o sudden_o discern_v no_o more_o be_v it_o in_o grace_n take_v a_o live_a child_n it_o grow_v every_o day_n yet_o be_v not_o this_o growth_n discern_v in_o a_o day_n or_o a_o week_n or_o a_o month_n but_o it_o must_v have_v a_o long_a time_n take_v a_o tree_n it_o grow_v daily_o but_o come_v to_o it_o to_o day_n and_o again_o to_o morrow_n you_o see_v no_o growth_n yea_o it_o may_v be_v come_v to_o it_o a_o year_n or_o two_o year_n after_o the_o growth_n be_v hardly_o discernible_a but_o come_v to_o it_o now_o and_o again_o seven_o year_n hence_o you_o will_v see_v growth_n object_n but_o i_o do_v not_o only_o find_v a_o want_n of_o growth_n in_o grace_n but_o i_o clear_o find_v a_o decline_a in_o grace_n both_o in_o root_n and_o branch_n as_o i_o think_v i_o can_v believe_v nor_o have_v confidence_n as_o former_o i_o think_v i_o do_v neither_o be_o i_o so_o humble_a mortify_v self-denying_a as_o once_o i_o think_v i_o be_v and_o therefore_o i_o fear_v i_o have_v no_o in-being_a in_o christ_n answ_n thou_o find_v a_o decline_a in_o grace_n why_o then_o that_o have_v grace_n how_o else_o can_v thou_o decline_v in_o grace_n light_n decrease_v therefore_o there_o be_v light_n how_o can_v it_o decrease_v else_o by_o thy_o own_o confession_n therefore_o thou_o have_v grace_n and_o if_o grace_n then_o in-being_a in_o christ_n 2_o thou_o find_v declining_n in_o grace_n but_o be_v thou_o not_o at_o present_a in_o a_o distemper_n or_o have_v thou_o not_o be_v in_o one_o of_o late_a no_o wonder_v to_o see_v a_o man_n spirit_n and_o strength_n decrease_v when_o there_o be_v some_o feavourish_a distemper_n upon_o he_o or_o that_o have_v be_v late_o upon_o he_o 3_o thou_o find_v declining_n but_o do_v thou_o never_o in_o all_o thy_o life_n time_n find_v declining_n in_o grace_n before_o and_o yet_o find_v also_o that_o grace_n do_v rise_v up_o out_o of_o these_o declining_n with_o advantage_n as_o we_o see_v a_o corn_n of_o wheat_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n and_o die_v but_o rise_v with_o advantage_n a_o ear_n for_o a_o corn_n so_o when_o thy_o grace_n have_v seem_v to_o be_v dead_a as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o while_n yet_o have_v thou_o not_o at_o last_o see_v it_o sprout_v up_o with_o advantage_n more_o faith_n more_o love_n humility_z mortification_n at_o the_o rise_n of_o grace_n after_o such_o a_o decline_a time_n than_o thou_o see_v in_o thyself_o before_o o_o yes_o say_v the_o soul_n i_o must_v confess_v i_o have_v many_o time_n think_v now_o i_o be_o quite_o go_v my_o grace_n be_v dead_a and_o yet_o after_o all_o this_o i_o have_v see_v a_o great_a shoot_n and_o spring_v up_o than_o ever_o before_o in_o my_o soul_n if_o so_o then_o assure_v thyself_o poor_a soul_n thou_o have_v in-being_a in_o jesus_n christ_n by_o virtue_n of_o which_o all_o thy_o wintertime_n the_o seed_n of_o grace_n be_v maintain_v alive_a in_o thy_o soul_n and_o when_o the_o spring-time_n come_v sprout_n up_o with_o advantage_n use_v 1_o be_v this_o so_o then_o this_o show_v we_o the_o glorious_a privilege_n of_o all_o those_o that_o have_v in-being_a in_o christ_n they_o be_v free_v from_o condemnation_n what_o a_o bless_a privilege_n be_v this_o free_v from_o condemnation_n and_o free_v from_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n free_v from_o condemnation_n and_o free_v from_o the_o guilt_n of_o all_o sin_n from_o the_o dreadful_a curse_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o heavy_a charge_n of_o satan_n from_o the_o stinging_n of_o a_o torment_a conscience_n from_o the_o slavery_n of_o the_o devil_n from_o all_o affliction_n as_o legal_a punishment_n for_o sin_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o man_n from_o the_o violence_n of_o the_o creature_n etc._n etc._n o_o bless_a condition_n the_o poor_a grey_a coat_n and_o leather_n coat_n that_o have_v in-being_a in_o christ_n be_v in_o a_o more_o bless_a and_o happy_a condition_n than_o the_o silk_n gown_n the_o plush_n and_o scarlet_a coat_n that_o have_v not_o in-being_a in_o christ_n the_o one_o though_o he_o make_v not_o such_o a_o bravado_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o be_v in_o christ_n heaven_n salvation_n and_o all_o be_v he_o other_o though_o they_o brave_v it_o out_o for_o a_o time_n and_o must_v have_v elbow_n room_n where_o they_o go_v and_o be_v come_v to_o with_o congee_n and_o cap_n in_o the_o hand_n yet_o they_o be_v under_o condemnation_n from_o which_o if_o god_n do_v not_o by_o bring_v they_o home_o to_o himself_o release_v they_o here_o they_o will_v be_v miserable_a in_o hell_n for_o ever_o hereafter_o use_v 2._o this_o cast_v many_o person_n and_o bring_v most_o man_n in_o the_o country_n town_n and_o parish_n of_o the_o world_n under_o condemnation_n why_o they_o have_v not_o in-being_a in_o christ_n 1_o be_v thou_o one_o who_o live_v and_o walk_v in_o profane_a course_n be_v thou_o a_o drunkard_n swearer_n a_o unclean_a person_n etc._n etc._n assure_v thyself_o thou_o be_v one_o cast_v by_o this_o doctrine_n for_o thou_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o in-being_a i_o mean_v actual_a in-being_a which_o be_v that_o word_n sometime_o by_o fill_v they_o with_o groan_n unutterable_a i._n e._n a_o soul_n that_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v inward_a groan_n for_o many_o thing_n more_o than_o he_o can_v utter_v it_o may_v be_v he_o speak_v one_o petition_n and_o at_o that_o instant_a groan_n for_o twenty_o the_o groan_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o saint_n heart_n whilst_o they_o be_v in_o prayer_n be_v far_o more_o large_a and_o extensive_a than_o the_o expression_n of_o the_o mouth_n be_v or_o can_v be_v and_o which_o may_v be_v a_o matter_n of_o abundant_a comfort_n to_o we_o the_o answer_n of_o god_n be_v not_o according_a to_o the_o expression_n of_o our_o mouth_n but_o the_o desire_n and_o groan_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n o_o will_v we_o know_v then_o how_o to_o pray_v as_o we_o shall_v let_v we_o labour_v for_o the_o spirit_n we_o shall_v never_o pray_v without_o it_o perhaps_o we_o may_v speak_v good_a word_n and_o fine_a expression_n as_o many_o can_v who_o yet_o never_o god_n and_o to_o god_n many_o time_n that_o soul_n pray_v and_o that_o excellent_o powerful_o who_o perhaps_o be_v not_o able_a to_o speak_v a_o word_n or_o if_o he_o do_v he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o speak_v ten_o word_n true_a sense_n together_o when_o as_o another_o which_o speak_v fluent_o and_o orderly_o and_o that_o for_o hour_n together_o perhaps_o pray_v not_o a_o word_n all_o that_o time_n observe_v 6._o in_o the_o last_o day_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a pour_v forth_o of_o the_o spirit_n than_o ordinary_a this_o i_o gather_v from_o the_o last_o thing_n in_o open_v the_o word_n viz._n the_o time_n when_o this_o shall_v be_v that_o day_n hence_o the_o word_n pour_v be_v much_o use_v when_o the_o give_v of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o last_o day_n be_v speak_v of_o denote_v a_o have_v more_o and_o great_a enemy_n to_o encounter_v with_o than_o in_o former_a time_n they_o have_v and_o therefore_o god_n give_v they_o more_o of_o the_o spirit_n what_o a_o mercy_n than_o be_v it_o to_o be_v bring_v forth_o and_o to_o live_v in_o the_o last_o day_n and_o how_o do_v it_o call_v upon_o we_o all_o the_o near_a these_o time_n draw_v on_o to_o be_v the_o more_o spiritual_a thus_o much_o for_o the_o observation_n from_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o word_n i_o come_v now_o to_o the_o second_o the_o effect_n of_o this_o pour_v forth_o of_o the_o spirit_n they_o shall_v look_v on_o he_o who_o they_o have_v pierce_v observe_v 7._o the_o sin_n of_o believer_n do_v pierce_v jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v imply_v in_o that_o they_o look_v upon_o he_o who_o they_o have_v pierce_v observe_v 8._o christ_n must_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o pierce_v by_o we_o before_o we_o can_v mourn_v they_o do_v not_o mourn_v nor_o shed_v a_o tear_n till_o then_o observe_v 9_o when_o christ_n be_v look_v upon_o as_o pierce_v by_o we_o than_o we_o shall_v mourn_v they_o look_v on_o he_o and_o do_v mourn_v observe_v 10._o that_o mourning_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o behold_n of_o a_o pierce_a christ_n be_v a_o very_a bitter_a and_o grievous_a mourning_n and_o they_o shall_v mourn_v for_o he_o as_o one_o mourn_v for_o his_o only_a son_n observe_v 11._o none_o can_v thus_o look_v upon_o christ_n or_o mourn_v for_o he_o but_o only_o those_o upon_o who_o god_n pour_v his_o spirit_n i_o will_v pour_v out_o my_o spirit_n and_o they_o shall_v look_v and_o they_o shall_v mourn_v i_o shall_v wave_v all_o these_o and_o pitch_n upon_o one_o observation_n from_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o the_o word_n which_o be_v this_o viz_o observe_v true_a gospel-humiliation_n do_v reason_n be_v give_v they_o to_o be_v whole_o spend_v in_o search_v after_o that_o which_o it_o may_v be_v god_n will_v not_o have_v they_o know_v and_o which_o will_v make_v nothing_o for_o their_o spiritual_a advantage_n be_v know_v it_o can_v but_o be_v a_o great_a evil_n when_o god_n have_v leave_v we_o so_o many_o thing_n clear_a and_o determine_v that_o we_o shall_v run_v out_o so_o much_o of_o our_o precious_a time_n and_o strength_n as_o many_o do_v about_o dark_a and_o doubtful_a thing_n obj._n but_o may_v some_o say_v what_o will_v you_o deny_v all_o study_n of_o these_o thing_n of_o date_n we_o more_o talk_v of_o those_o thing_n wherein_o we_o differ_v from_o other_o than_o of_o those_o wherein_o we_o agree_v though_o the_o one_o be_v but_o a_o trifle_n and_o the_o other_o matter_n of_o great_a concernment_n and_o here_o be_v all_o the_o fruit_n that_o come_v of_o it_o which_o every_o one_o of_o we_o if_o our_o trade_n lie_v this_o way_n shall_v by_o woeful_a that_o they_o can_v never_o stand_v together_o and_o therefore_o that_o grace_n may_v be_v all_o the_o law_n and_o good_a work_n shall_v be_v nothing_o at_o all_o who_o mistake_n be_v correct_v from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v and_o prove_v that_o the_o moral_a law_n remain_v a_o rule_n to_o saint_n in_o gospel-time_n 2_o a_o mistake_n of_o some_o other_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n who_o out_o of_o zeal_n for_o the_o moral_a law_n do_v hand_n over_o head_n urge_v and_o press_v the_o same_o as_o the_o rule_n of_o saint_n never_o consider_v how_o or_o in_o what_o sense_n the_o same_o remain_v a_o rule_n and_o by_o so_o do_v they_o bring_v the_o glorious_a son_n of_o zion_n the_o freeborn_a saint_n of_o the_o gospel_n under_o the_o power_n and_o command_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n ere_o they_o be_v aware_a who_o mistake_n be_v correct_v by_o distinguish_v of_o command_n as_o they_o be_v moses_n and_o christ_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n the_o law_n be_v not_o a_o saint_n rule_n and_o it_o be_v dangerous_a so_o to_o make_v it_o in_o the_o latter_a it_o be_v and_o it_o be_v sweet_a and_o comfortable_a so_o to_o receive_v it_o therefore_o you_o that_o be_v saint_n and_o believer_n hence_o learn_v two_o thing_n i_o not_o to_o reject_v the_o moral_a law_n as_o a_o rule_n to_o order_v your_o life_n and_o conversation_n by_o but_o with_o love_n delight_n and_o cheerfulness_n approve_v of_o embrace_v and_o obey_v the_o same_o 2_o not_o to_o take_v the_o moral_a law_n for_o your_o rule_n as_o it_o come_v out_o of_o moses_n his_o hand_n for_o than_o you_o bring_v yourselves_o under_o the_o power_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o your_o soul_n will_v be_v continual_o fill_v with_o terror_n fear_n and_o tremble_a cover_v over_o with_o darkness_n lie_v out_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n the_o first_o respect_v our_o justification_n the_o latter_a our_o sanctification_n or_o our_o obedience_n and_o walk_v now_o as_o christ_n crucify_v be_v the_o great_a principle_n in_o the_o business_n of_o our_o justification_n whence_o alone_o that_o flow_v from_o the_o know_v and_o believe_v on_o a_o crucify_a
