it_o shall_v not_o be_v spiritual_o present_a because_o every_o thing_n be_v present_a as_o it_o agree_v in_o it_o own_o nature_n be_v it_o a_o bodily_a thing_n it_o be_v bodily_a present_n &_o if_o it_o be_v a_o heavenly_a thing_n it_o be_v spiritual_o present_a so_o i_o think_v no_o man_n can_v doubt_v how_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n be_v present_a he_o be_v not_o carnal_o present_a but_o spiritual_o present_a to_o my_o soul_n and_o to_o faith_n in_o my_o soul_n thus_o far_o concern_v the_o manner_n of_o his_o presence_n now_o the_o last_o part_n of_o our_o difference_n be_v this_o papist_n the_o last_o point_n in_o controversy_n betwixt_o we_o and_o the_o papist_n we_o have_v to_o consider_v to_o who_o the_o word_n ought_v to_o be_v direct_v &_o pronounce_v for_o we_o &_o the_o papist_n differ_v in_o this_o last_o point_n we_o say_v that_o the_o word_n ought_v to_o be_v direct_v &_o pronounce_v unto_o the_o people_n to_o the_o faithful_a communicant_n they_o on_o the_o contrary_n say_v that_o the_o word_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v direct_v nor_o pronounce_v to_o the_o people_n but_o to_o the_o element_n &_o not_o to_o be_v clear_o pronounce_v but_o whisper_v on_o the_o element_n so_o that_o if_o they_o be_v speak_v to_o the_o people_n or_o speak_v open_o their_o charm_n avail_v not_o now_o i_o say_v that_o as_o this_o holy_a action_n be_v pervert_v by_o they_o in_o all_o the_o rest_n so_o they_o pervert_v it_o in_o this_o point_n also_o in_o speak_v that_o to_o the_o dumb_a element_n which_o they_o shall_v speak_v to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n for_o i_o shall_v prove_v it_o clear_o by_o three_o argument_n take_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n that_o the_o word_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v speak_v to_o the_o bread_n but_o to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n and_o first_o i_o say_v the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n aught_o to_o be_v direct_v and_o pronounce_v to_o they_o in_o who_o the_o lord_n perform_v they_o &_o make_v they_o effectual_a but_o so_o it_o be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n be_v perform_v and_o make_v effectual_a not_o in_o bread_n and_o wine_n but_o in_o faithful_a man_n &_o woman_n therefore_o these_o promise_n shall_v be_v direct_v to_o faithful_a man_n &_o woman_n now_o here_o be_v the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n &_o grace_n this_o be_v my_o body_n which_o be_v break_v for_o you_o and_o this_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o no_o other_o thing_n but_o to_o the_o faithful_a and_o so_o to_o they_o only_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v direct_v second_o we_o have_v to_o consider_v that_o this_o sacrament_n seal_v up_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n now_o with_o who_o will_v god_n make_v his_o covenant_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n will_v he_o make_v a_o covenant_n with_o a_o piece_n of_o bread_n or_o any_o dumb_a element_n there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o his_o servant_n much_o less_o will_v enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o a_o dumb_a element_n so_o in_o respect_n this_o sacrament_n seal_v up_o a_o covenant_n this_o covenant_n of_o necessity_n must_v be_v make_v with_o a_o faithful_a soul_n and_o in_o no_o wise_a with_o the_o
dumb_a element_n and_o therefore_o these_o word_n can_v be_v direct_v to_o the_o element_n three_o look_v to_o the_o end_n wherefore_o this_o sacrament_n be_v appoint_v be_v it_o not_o to_o lead_v we_o to_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o to_o nourish_v my_o faith_n in_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o to_o nourish_v i_o in_o a_o constant_a persuasion_n of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n in_o christ_n be_v this_o sacrament_n appoint_v to_o make_v the_o element_n god_n no_o for_o if_o you_o mark_v god_n purpose_n in_o this_o institution_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o christ_n have_v not_o ordain_v this_o plain_o that_o the_o institution_n of_o christ_n respect_v not_o the_o element_n to_o alter_v their_o nature_n indeed_o it_o be_v appoint_v to_o alter_v we_o to_o change_v we_o and_o to_o make_v we_o more_o and_o more_o spiritual_a and_o to_o sanctify_v the_o element_n to_o our_o use_n but_o the_o special_a end_n be_v this_o to_o make_v we_o holy_a and_o more_o &_o more_o to_o grow_v up_o in_o a_o sure_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o not_o to_o alter_v the_o element_n nor_o to_o make_v they_o god_n and_o therefore_o by_o all_o these_o three_o argument_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o word_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v direct_v to_o the_o element_n but_o to_o the_o people_n and_o faithful_a communicant_n now_o to_o come_v to_o a_o end_n there_o be_v one_o thing_n exhortation_n conclusion_n with_o a_o exhortation_n without_o the_o which_o we_o can_v profit_v let_v we_o discourse_v never_o so_o long_o upon_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o the_o sacrament_n you_o see_v now_o how_o all_o that_o be_v speak_v concern_v the_o sacrament_n be_v ground_v and_o depend_v upon_o faith_n let_v a_o man_n have_v faith_n be_v it_o never_o so_o little_a he_o shall_v get_v some_o hold_n of_o christ_n and_o some_o insight_n in_o the_o understanding_n of_o this_o sacrament_n but_o want_v faith_n though_o a_o man_n endeavour_n himself_o to_o make_v the_o sacrament_n never_o so_o sensible_a it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o he_o can_v get_v any_o hold_n of_o christ_n or_o any_o insight_n of_o he_o for_o without_o faith_n we_o can_v be_v christian_n we_o can_v neither_o get_v a_o sight_n of_o god_n nor_o feel_v god_n in_o christ_n without_o faith_n faith_n be_v the_o only_a thing_n that_o translate_v our_o soul_n out_o of_o that_o death_n and_o damnation_n wherein_o we_o be_v conceive_v and_o bear_v and_o plant_v life_n in_o us._n so_o the_o whole_a study_n and_o endeavour_n of_o a_o christian_a shall_v tend_v to_o this_o to_o crave_v that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o mercy_n will_v illuminate_v his_o mind_n with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o he_o will_v kindle_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o love_n of_o faith_n and_o work_n in_o his_o hart_n a_o thirst_n and_o desire_v of_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n &_o more_o and_o more_o to_o thirst_v and_o hunger_n for_o the_o food_n of_o faith_n that_o nourish_v we_o to_o life_n eternal_a without_o this_o faith_n how-soev_a the_o natural_a man_n understand_v natural_o will_v flatter_v himself_o sure_o there_o be_v no_o blessedness_n but_o all_o his_o life_n be_v more_o than_o terrible_a misery_n for_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v that_o flatter_v and_o please_v thou_o now_o be_v it_o a_o thought_n or_o motion_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o a_o action_n of_o the_o body_n that_o please_v thou_o now_o without_o faith_n the_o same_o very_a motion_n cogitation_n or_o action_n shall_v torment_v thou_o hereafter_o so_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o whatsoever_o please_v not_o god_n hear_n of_o the_o word_n rash_o but_o that_o every_o one_o of_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o this_o holy_a work_n with_o reverence_n that_o we_o shall_v prepare_v and_o sanctify_v ourselves_o in_o some_o measure_n and_o see_v we_o go_v unto_o the_o king_n of_o heaven_n table_n it_o become_v we_o to_o put_v on_o our_o best_a array_n in_o a_o word_n he_o deliver_v the_o whole_a doctrine_n and_o matter_n of_o this_o preparation_n when_o he_o say_v let_v every_o man_n and_o let_v every_o woman_n try_v and_o examine_v themselves_o as_o if_o he_o will_v say_v let_v every_o one_o of_o you_o try_v and_o examine_v your_o soul_n that_o be_v try_v the_o estate_n of_o your_o own_o heart_n and_o condition_n of_o your_o own_o conscience_n mark_v and_o behold_v in_o what_o estate_n you_o heart_n be_v with_o god_n and_o in_o what_o estate_n your_o conscience_n be_v with_o your_o neighbour_n he_o bid_v not_o your_o neighbour_n to_o try_v you_o he_o bid_v not_o your_o companion_n to_o try_v your_o hart_n but_o he_o bid_v yourself_o in_o person_n to_o try_v your_o own_o conscience_n he_o bid_v yourself_o try_v your_o own_o hart_n because_o none_o can_v be_v certain_a of_o the_o estate_n of_o your_o hart_n or_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o your_o conscience_n but_o yourself_o now_o he_o exclude_v not_o other_o from_o the_o trial_n of_o you_o neither_o for_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o the_o pastor_n to_o try_v you_o but_o other_o can_v try_v you_o so_o narrow_o as_o you_o yourselves_o may_v for_o no_o man_n can_v know_v so_o much_o of_o i_o as_o i_o know_v of_o myself_o no_o man_n can_v be_v certain_a of_o the_o estate_n of_o your_o hart_n and_o condition_n of_o your_o conscience_n &_o yet_o you_o yourselves_o may_v be_v certain_a of_o it_o as_o for_o other_o man_n may_v judge_v of_o your_o hart_n and_o conscience_n according_a to_o your_o work_n and_o effect_n and_o except_o your_o work_n &_o effect_n be_v very_o wicked_a and_o altogether_o vicious_a we_o be_v bind_v in_o
