of_o the_o true_a spirit_n of_o christianity_n for_o sure_a such_o thing_n as_o these_o they_o can_v never_o do_v but_o only_o that_o as_o our_o saviour_n in_o that_o other_o case_n before_o say_v they_o have_v not_o know_v the_o father_n nor_o him._n and_o i_o hope_v i_o shall_v need_v no_o argument_n to_o persuade_v you_o not_o to_o be_v mislead_v by_o that_o which_o we_o all_o of_o we_o so_o just_o lament_v as_o one_o of_o the_o most_o deplorable_a corruption_n even_o of_o popery_n itself_o christianity_n command_v we_o to_o love_v our_o enemy_n and_o sure_a than_o we_o can_v but_o think_v it_o very_o high_o reasonable_a not_o to_o hate_v our_o brethren_n but_o especial_o on_o such_o a_o account_n as_o if_o it_o be_v once_o admit_v will_v in_o this_o divide_a state_n of_o the_o church_n utter_o drive_v the_o very_a name_n of_o brotherly_a love_n and_o charity_n out_o of_o it_o see_v by_o whatever_o argument_n we_o shall_v go_v about_o to_o justify_v our_o uncharitableness_n to_o any_o other_o they_o will_v all_o equal_o warrant_v they_o to_o with_o hold_n in_o like_a manner_n their_o charity_n from_o we_o there_o be_v no_o honest_a sincere_a christian_a how_o erroneous_a soever_o he_o may_v be_v but_o what_o at_o least_o be_v persuade_v that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o right_a and_o look_v upon_o we_o to_o be_v as_o far_o from_o the_o truth_n by_o differ_v from_o he_o as_o we_o esteem_v he_o for_o not_o agree_v with_o we_o now_o if_o upon_o the_o sole_a account_n of_o such_o difference_n it_o be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o hate_v another_o we_o must_v for_o the_o very_a same_o reason_n allow_v it_o to_o be_v as_o lawful_a for_o he_o also_o to_o hate_n us._n thus_o shall_v we_o at_o once_o invert_v the_o characteristic_a of_o our_o religion_n 13.35_o by_o this_o shall_v all_o man_n know_v that_o you_o be_v my_o disciple_n if_o you_o have_v love_v one_o to_o another_o and_o turn_v it_o into_o the_o quite_o contrary_a note_n whilst_o we_o make_v our_o hatred_n not_o think_v unworthy_a of_o his_o favour_n we_o suppose_v they_o to_o be_v mistake_v in_o those_o thing_n wherein_o they_o differ_v from_o we_o and_o perhaps_o they_o be_v so_o but_o yet_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o we_o ourselves_o also_o be_v but_o man_n and_o therefore_o may_v err_v and_o they_o as_o very_o think_v we_o in_o the_o wrong_n as_o we_o do_v they_o and_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v we_o must_v leave_v it_o to_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n to_o decide_v the_o controversy_n which_o of_o we_o be_v in_o the_o right_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n if_o they_o be_v mistake_v i_o be_o sure_a our_o uncharitableness_n be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o error_n but_o may_v rather_o indispose_v they_o to_o consider_v the_o weight_n of_o our_o argument_n as_o they_o ought_v whilst_o they_o see_v so_o little_a regard_n in_o our_o affection_n towards_o they_o in_o short_a if_o we_o be_v indeed_o what_o we_o esteem_v ourselves_o to_o be_v the_o strong_a in_o the_o faith_n let_v we_o then_o remember_v that_o though_o charity_n be_v their_o duty_n too_o as_o well_o as_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v to_o such_o as_o we_o be_v especial_o that_o st._n paul_n address_v the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o text_n 1._o to_o bear_v the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o weak_a 7._o and_o to_o receive_v one_o another_o as_o christ_n also_o have_v receive_v we_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god._n but_o 2._o such_o difference_n as_o these_o ought_v not_o only_o not_o to_o lessen_v our_o charity_n but_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a not_o to_o hinder_v we_o from_o join_v together_o in_o the_o same_o common_a worship_n of_o god_n with_o one_o another_o this_o be_v what_o these_o dissent_v christian_n notwithstanding_o all_o their_o heat_n and_o contention_n nevertheless_o still_o continue_v to_o do_v they_o do_v with_o one_o mouth_n glorify_v god_n even_o when_o their_o difference_n will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o do_v it_o with_o one_o heart_n they_o unite_z together_o in_o a_o common_a worship_n of_o god_n though_o they_o can_v not_o unite_v either_o in_o opinion_n or_o affection_n with_o one_o another_o indeed_o where_o man_n error_n be_v such_o as_o utter_o do_v subvert_v the_o very_a essential_o of_o our_o religious_a worship_n it_o be_v then_o in_o vain_a to_o hope_v for_o any_o communion_n in_o the_o public_a service_n of_o god_n with_o they_o we_o must_v not_o destroy_v the_o principle_n of_o christianity_n out_o of_o a_o zeal_n to_o enlarge_v the_o communion_n of_o christian_n he_o will_v be_v a_o very_a condescend_v votary_n indeed_o who_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o pray_v to_o god_n with_o the_o papist_n will_v pray_v to_o the_o bless_a virgin_n and_o saint_n too_o with_o he_o who_o rather_o than_o be_v exclude_v their_o church_n will_v bow_v down_o before_o their_o image_n and_o not_o only_o worship_v their_o host_n but_o even_o give_v up_o his_o right_n to_o the_o cup_n in_o the_o eucharist_n only_o that_o he_o may_v receive_v that_o holy_a sacrament_n in_o their_o company_n it_o be_v no_o doubt_n a_o very_a desirable_a thing_n to_o lessen_v the_o difference_n of_o christian_n and_o enlarge_v their_o communion_n as_o far_o as_o ever_o we_o can_v and_o it_o have_v never_o go_v well_o with_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n since_o man_n have_v be_v so_o narrow_a spirit_v as_o to_o mix_v the_o controversy_n of_o faith_n with_o their_o public_a form_n of_o worship_n and_o have_v make_v their_o liturgy_n instead_o of_o be_v office_n of_o devotion_n to_o god_n become_v test_n and_o censure_n of_o the_o opinion_n of_o their_o brethren_n but_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v the_o truth_n of_o christianity_n must_v not_o be_v sacrifice_v to_o the_o peace_n of_o christian_n nor_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n be_v give_v up_o to_o keep_v up_o a_o unity_n and_o communion_n with_o one_o another_o but_o where_o man_n difference_n be_v in_o point_n that_o do_v not_o at_o all_o affect_v their_o religious_a service_n or_o not_o so_o much_o but_o that_o god_n may_v be_v very_o well_o worship_v and_o yet_o communion_n with_o our_o fellow_n christian_n preserve_v too_o in_o such_o case_n as_o this_o our_o dissension_n ought_v not_o only_o not_o to_o lessen_v our_o charity_n but_o not_o to_o break_v our_o unity_n neither_o we_o may_v continue_v to_o differ_v as_o the_o christian_n in_o my_o text_n do_v and_o yet_o with_o one_o mind_n and_o one_o mouth_n glorify_v god_n as_o st._n paul_n exhort_v they_o to_o do_v and_o this_o bring_v i_o to_o the_o three_o and_o last_o point_n 3._o iii_o that_o to_o this_o end_n it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o of_o we_o but_o especial_o of_o the_o strong_a christian_n not_o only_o to_o pray_v for_o such_o a_o union_n but_o also_o as_o they_o have_v opportunity_n hearty_o to_o labour_v themselves_o and_o earnest_o to_o stir_v up_o all_o other_o to_o endeavour_v after_o it_o i_o do_v not_o believe_v there_o be_v any_o good_a christian_a so_o little_o affect_v with_o those_o unhappy_a division_n under_o which_o the_o church_n at_o this_o day_n labour_n as_o not_o both_o hearty_o to_o deplore_v they_o and_o to_o think_v that_o nothing_o can_v be_v too_o much_o that_o may_v innocent_o be_v do_v on_o all_o hand_n for_o the_o redress_v of_o they_o but_o then_o i_o be_o sure_a the_o natural_a consequence_n of_o this_o must_v be_v what_o both_o my_o text_n and_o this_o discourse_n be_v design_v to_o exhort_v you_o to_o viz._n that_o we_o ought_v every_o one_o of_o we_o not_o only_o hearty_o to_o pray_v for_o such_o a_o union_n but_o also_o as_o we_o have_v opportunity_n earnest_o to_o labour_v for_o the_o attainment_n of_o it_o indeed_o for_o what_o concern_v the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n on_o earth_n so_o many_o be_v the_o dispute_n that_o
have_v arisen_a among_o the_o several_a party_n and_o communion_n of_o it_o and_o some_o of_o they_o in_o point_n so_o near_o to_o the_o foundation_n of_o christianity_n that_o whilst_o man_n resolve_v to_o keep_v fast_o to_o their_o conclusion_n and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o plain_a argument_n to_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o error_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o hope_v ever_o to_o see_v thing_n bring_v to_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o we_o can_v wish_v in_o that_o but_o especial_o whilst_o that_o part_n which_o be_v the_o most_o corrupt_a be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v willing_a to_o concur_v to_o any_o such_o union_n that_o on_o the_o contrary_a she_o have_v cut_v off_o all_o possibility_n of_o attain_v it_o and_o by_o arrogate_a a_o unwarrantable_a infallibility_n to_o herself_o and_o authority_n over_o all_o other_o will_v neither_o reform_v she_o own_o abuse_n nor_o admit_v any_o into_o her_o communion_n that_o will_v not_o profess_v the_o same_o error_n in_o which_o she_o herself_o stand_v involve_v so_o that_o here_o all_o we_o can_v even_o wish_v for_o be_v that_o man_n will_v at_o last_o be_v so_o wise_a as_o though_o they_o differ_v in_o opinion_n yet_o to_o love_v as_o brethren_n and_o agree_v together_o in_o a_o common_a charity_n till_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o happy_a as_o to_o unite_v in_o a_o common_a faith_n and_o worship_n of_o god._n but_o for_o we_o who_o it_o have_v please_v god_n by_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o error_n and_o superstition_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o unite_v together_o in_o the_o common_a name_n of_o protestant_n reform_v christian_n will_v we_o but_o as_o hearty_o labour_n after_o peace_n as_o we_o be_v all_o of_o we_o very_o high_o exhort_v to_o it_o i_o can_v see_v why_o we_o who_o be_v so_o happy_o join_v together_o in_o a_o common_a profession_n of_o the_o same_o faith_n at_o least_o i_o be_o sure_a in_o all_o the_o necessary_a point_n of_o it_o and_o i_o hope_v amid_o all_o our_o lesser_a difference_n in_o a_o common_a love_n and_o charity_n to_o one_o another_o shall_v not_o also_o be_v unite_v in_o the_o same_o common_a worship_n of_o god_n too_o i_o will_v not_o now_o enter_v into_o any_o dispute_n to_o show_v how_o little_a reason_n there_o be_v for_o any_o one_o to_o separate_v from_o the_o office_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o those_o few_o exception_n that_o have_v sometime_o be_v offer_v to_o justify_v the_o do_n of_o it_o this_o be_v a_o work_n both_o too_o large_a for_o such_o a_o discourse_n and_o beside_o the_o design_n of_o my_o present_a undertake_n and_o that_o one_o concession_n of_o many_o of_o our_o brethren_n themselves_o who_o though_o they_o continue_v ordinary_o to_o separate_v from_o we_o yet_o nevertheless_o free_o allow_v of_o what_o they_o call_v occasional_a communion_n with_o we_o i_o think_v sufficient_o show_v how_o little_a real_a ground_n there_o be_v for_o those_o scruple_n that_o have_v so_o long_o detain_v they_o in_o a_o unjust_a aversion_n to_o our_o worship_n bless_a be_v god_n who_o have_v abundant_o justify_v both_o the_o purity_n of_o our_o doctrine_n and_o the_o innocency_n of_o our_o worship_n not_o only_o by_o the_o general_a approbation_n of_o the_o reform_a church_n abroad_o who_o both_o free_o communicate_v with_o we_o in_o our_o religious_a office_n and_o have_v often_o give_v testimony_n in_o favour_n of_o they_o but_o in_o the_o happy_a conviction_n of_o many_o at_o home_n who_o be_v once_o enemy_n to_o our_o constitution_n but_o who_o now_o go_v with_o we_o into_o the_o same_o house_n of_o god_n as_o friend_n and_o indeed_o the_o thing_n for_o which_o some_o forsake_v we_o now_o be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o they_o be_v in_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o reformation_n when_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o separation_n from_o our_o communion_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a the_o old_a nonconformist_n themselves_o though_o they_o dislike_v some_o thing_n in_o our_o worship_n yet_o free_o declare_v they_o think_v it_o a_o crime_n to_o divide_v the_o church_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o they_o and_o they_o who_o at_o this_o day_n separate_v from_o we_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o those_o few_o constitution_n that_o have_v be_v make_v for_o the_o order_n and_o decency_n of_o our_o public_a worship_n must_v for_o the_o same_o reason_n have_v separate_v from_o all_o the_o church_n of_o the_o christian_a world_n for_o above_o 1500_o year_n in_o none_o of_o which_o they_o may_v not_o have_v find_v as_o great_a that_o i_o do_v not_o say_v and_o much_o great_a occasion_n of_o offence_n than_o they_o can_v in_o we_o but_o yet_o since_o man_n scruple_n be_v unaccountable_a and_o after_o all_o that_o can_v be_v say_v they_o will_v still_o differ_v even_o about_o indifferent_a thing_n and_o be_v afraid_a many_o time_n where_o no_o fear_n be_v and_o a_o too_o long_a experience_n have_v already_o show_v we_o that_o if_o ever_o we_o mean_v to_o accomplish_v that_o union_n so_o much_o recommend_v to_o we_o by_o our_o apostle_n so_o advantageous_a to_o the_o church_n at_o all_o time_n but_o especial_o at_o this_o time_n so_o necessary_a to_o our_o peace_n and_o our_o establishment_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o only_a way_n that_o yet_o remain_v to_o settle_v and_o to_o secure_v we_o and_o upon_o all_o these_o account_n so_o much_o to_o be_v desire_v by_o all_o good_a man_n we_o must_v seek_v it_o by_o that_o rule_n which_o st._n paul_n here_o propose_v to_o the_o dissent_v christian_n of_o my_o text_n we_o then_o that_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o faith_n 1._o aught_o to_o bear_v the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o weak_a and_o not_o to_o please_v ourselves_o i_o can_v but_o think_v it_o a_o reflection_n become_v
