christ_n at_o least_o till_o they_o be_v cut_v off_o by_o the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n and_o there_o be_v no_o inconvenience_n in_o this_o if_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n be_v but_o so_o strict_a in_o their_o discipline_n as_o to_o prevent_v all_o public_a scandal_n for_o since_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n be_v the_o school_n and_o nursery_n of_o virtue_n where_o bad_a man_n may_v be_v reform_v and_o become_v saint_n since_o christ_n be_v that_o spiritual_a vine_n from_o who_o alone_o we_o can_v receive_v the_o communication_n of_o a_o divine_a life_n it_o be_v very_o of_o trial_n exercise_n and_o discipline_n and_o the_o state_n of_o perfect_a and_o consummate_a soul_n between_o a_o state_n of_o warfare_n where_o the_o victory_n be_v doubtful_a and_o the_o triumphant_a company_n of_o conqueror_n between_o those_o who_o run_v in_o a_o race_n and_o those_o who_o have_v win_v the_o prize_n for_o such_o a_o difference_n there_o be_v between_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o in_o heaven_n we_o can_v run_v this_o spiritual_a race_n unless_o we_o be_v in_o the_o church_n for_o there_o be_v no_o prize_n no_o crown_n to_o run_v for_o out_o of_o it_o and_o therefore_o those_o who_o lose_v as_o well_o as_o those_o who_o win_v the_o prize_n must_v be_v in_o the_o church_n and_o member_n of_o it_o they_o be_v all_o in_o the_o same_o earth_n for_o the_o church_n in_o heaven_n be_v not_o under_o his_o government_n other_o consider_v that_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o church_n consist_v in_o the_o union_n of_o all_o the_o part_n and_o member_n of_o it_o to_o christ_n have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n as_o that_o also_o be_v one_o body_n and_o communion_n and_o therefore_o it_o mystical_a body_n ought_v to_o partake_v of_o his_o life_n and_o spirit_n or_o else_o they_o be_v only_o dead_a and_o rot_a member_n which_o shall_v be_v cut_v off_o and_o shall_v never_o inherit_v eternal_a life_n but_o such_o dead_a member_n be_v member_n still_o till_o they_o be_v cut_v off_o either_o by_o church_n censure_n in_o this_o world_n or_o by_o the_o sentence_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o next_o this_o participation_n of_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o our_o mystical_a union_n to_o christ_n but_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o we_o can_v receive_v the_o influence_n of_o life_n and_o grace_n from_o christ_n till_o we_o be_v unite_v to_o he_o and_o make_v the_o member_n of_o his_o body_n for_o his_o spirit_n only_o quicken_v and_o animate_v his_o own_o body_n and_o we_o be_v unite_v to_o his_o body_n by_o covenant_n and_o by_o the_o sacrament_n of_o it_o which_o convey_v this_o divine_a life_n and_o spirit_n to_o we_o and_o therefore_o baptism_n be_v our_o regeneration_n or_o new_a birth_n the_o beginning_n of_o a_o new_a life_n because_o it_o incorporate_v we_o into_o christ_n mystical_a body_n which_o put_v we_o under_o the_o influence_n and_o communication_n of_o his_o life_n and_o spirit_n as_o when_o a_o branch_n be_v engraft_v into_o a_o stock_n it_o receive_v nourishment_n and_o life_n from_o it_o so_o that_o these_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a influence_n be_v consequent_a upon_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n and_o though_o all_o who_o be_v unite_v to_o christ_n have_v these_o influence_n of_o grace_n as_o the_o root_n natural_o communicate_v its_o sap_n and_o juice_n to_o all_o its_o branch_n yet_o all_o do_v not_o improve_v it_o do_v not_o digest_v it_o into_o principle_n of_o life_n and_o action_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n worthy_a of_o it_o like_o dead_a and_o wither_a branch_n who_o can_v receive_v the_o sap_n and_o nourishment_n which_o ascend_v from_o the_o root_n and_o will_v quicken_v they_o be_v not_o its_o entrance_n stop_v and_o hinder_v but_o notwithstanding_o this_o they_o be_v member_n and_o branch_n still_o though_o dead_a and_o fruitless_a there_o be_v no_o account_n indeed_o have_v of_o they_o christ_n know_v they_o not_o and_o do_v not_o reckon_v they_o as_o he_o and_o therefore_o the_o description_n and_o character_n of_o the_o church_n in_o scripture_n be_v such_o as_o belong_v only_o to_o live_a member_n to_o those_o who_o be_v renew_v and_o sanctify_a and_o quicken_v by_o the_o divine_a spirit_n but_o yet_o they_o do_v belong_v to_o christ_n mystical_a body_n though_o they_o be_v in_o it_o only_o as_o a_o dead_a branch_n be_v in_o the_o vine_n but_o how_o can_v the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o the_o church_n in_o heaven_n be_v one_o church_n and_o one_o body_n if_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n have_v such_o corrupt_a and_o rot_a member_n in_o it_o for_o the_o church_n in_o heaven_n have_v none_o but_o live_v and_o holy_a member_n i_o answer_v the_o same_o covenant_n make_v they_o the_o same_o church_n and_o the_o same_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o there_o be_v bad_a man_n in_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o none_o but_o saint_n in_o heaven_n do_v not_o prove_v that_o they_o be_v two_o church_n but_o that_o they_o be_v in_o two_o very_a different_a state_n of_o right_n none_o but_o sincere_a believer_n and_o true_o pious_a man_n aught_o to_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n as_o well_o as_o in_o heaven_n but_o the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n the_o receive_n in_o and_o cast_v out_o of_o the_o church_n be_v entrust_v with_o man_n who_o can_v see_v the_o heart_n or_o who_o be_v not_o careful_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o discipline_n to_o preserve_v the_o purity_n of_o the_o church_n secret_a hypocrite_n may_v be_v receive_v into_o the_o church_n and_o those_o who_o be_v open_o profane_a may_v not_o be_v cast_v out_o of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o other_o world_n christ_n make_v the_o distinction_n and_o separate_v the_o chaff_n from_o the_o wheat_n and_o therefore_o the_o church_n in_o heaven_n can_v consist_v only_o of_o good_a man_n because_o bad_a man_n can_v find_v no_o admission_n there_o and_o beside_o this_o it_o be_v agreeable_a enough_o to_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n on_o earth_n and_o indeed_o can_v well_o be_v otherwise_o that_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n shall_v be_v intermix_v in_o it_o because_o it_o be_v a_o state_n of_o trial_n and_o discipline_n of_o growth_n and_o improvement_n though_o bad_a man_n as_o that_o signify_v hypocrite_n and_o unbeliever_n if_o they_o be_v know_v ought_v not_o to_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o church_n yet_o if_o they_o be_v by_o the_o influence_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o instruction_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n and_o the_o example_n and_o conversation_n of_o good_a man_n and_o the_o prudent_a exercise_n of_o discipline_n they_o may_v be_v reclaim_v to_o virtue_n and_o become_v live_a member_n of_o christ_n body_n those_o who_o be_v dead_a before_o may_v recover_v a_o new_a life_n by_o be_v engrat_v into_o this_o heavenly_a vine_n nay_o indeed_o though_o all_o man_n be_v not_o equal_o wicked_a yet_o no_o man_n have_v this_o divine_a life_n but_o only_o from_o christ_n and_o the_o communication_n of_o his_o grace_n which_o he_o can_v receive_v from_o christ_n till_o he_o be_v unite_v to_o he_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n require_v no_o other_o qualification_n for_o baptism_n but_o only_a faith_n the_o very_o worst_a of_o man_n who_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o profess_a obedience_n to_o he_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o church_n by_o baptism_n and_o put_v under_o the_o influence_n of_o grace_n without_o expect_v till_o they_o have_v first_o reform_v their_o life_n which_o beside_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o apostle_n seem_v to_o i_o much_o more_o agreeable_a to_o the_o gospel-dispensation_n than_o that_o discipline_n which_o be_v afterward_o use_v in_o the_o church_n when_o they_o do_v not_o immediate_o baptize_v those_o who_o profess_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n
