because_o no_o such_o matter_n be_v to_o be_v know_v at_o any_o considerable_a distance_n but_o by_o tradition_n to_o this_o it_o be_v answer_v that_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o believe_v the_o matter_n of_o fact_n upon_o the_o church_n tradition_n and_o another_o to_o believe_v they_o upon_o her_o authority_n found_v upon_o her_o infallibility_n now_o this_o latter_a we_o reject_v but_o adhere_v to_o the_o former_a as_o a_o ground_n of_o our_o belief_n of_o those_o thing_n but_o then_o by_o the_o tradition_n of_o the_o church_n we_o be_v far_o from_o meaning_n that_o of_o rome_n this_o single_a text_n if_o we_o can_v be_v certain_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o text_n without_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o church_n authority_n what_o folly_n or_o rather_o knavery_n be_v the_o more_o incline_v to_o a_o total_a refuse_v of_o any_o such_o liberty_n i_o mean_v that_o there_o be_v no_o occasion_n give_v to_o what_o be_v so_o common_o not_o without_o ground_n say_v viz._n when_o it_o be_v man_n temporal_a interest_n to_o plead_v for_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n than_o they_o be_v zealous_a for_o it_o but_o the_o table_n be_v no_o soon_o turn_v but_o who_o like_o they_o against_o it_o be_v we_o as_o honest_a as_o we_o shall_v be_v we_o shall_v be_v more_o fix_v and_o constant_a and_o not_o so_o vary_v in_o our_o principle_n as_o our_o circumstance_n vary_v we_o shall_v not_o in_o one_o circumstance_n build_v what_o before_o we_o destroy_v and_o in_o another_o destroy_v what_o we_o before_o build_v and_o so_o declare_v amid_o all_o our_o stir_n and_o noise_n about_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n that_o we_o have_v either_o none_o at_o all_o or_o but_o very_o little_a conscience_n but_o in_o the_o conclusion_n of_o all_o i_o must_v not_o forget_v that_o which_o have_v occasion_v all_o this_o discourse_n about_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n viz._n that_o whatever_o that_o liberty_n of_o this_o kind_n be_v which_o we_o have_v a_o right_n to_o it_o be_v not_o a_o branch_n of_o christian_a but_o of_o mere_a natural_a liberty_n there_o be_v no_o text_n of_o scripture_n that_o mention_v this_o as_o a_o liberty_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n and_o therefore_o no_o christian_a may_v claim_v it_o as_o a_o christian._n it_o be_v due_a to_o man_n of_o all_o religion_n who_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o make_v conscience_n of_o what_o they_o do_v and_o not_o only_o to_o the_o professor_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n and_o it_o be_v always_o and_o in_o all_o place_n as_o much_o man_n right_a as_o it_o have_v be_v since_o our_o saviour_n that_o she_o rob_v those_o who_o subject_a themselves_o to_o she_o of_o that_o natural_a liberty_n which_o necessary_o belong_v to_o they_o as_o man_n or_o reasonable_a creature_n there_o be_v no_o necessary_a consequence_n from_o thence_o may_v you_o have_v any_o other_o foundation_n for_o your_o belief_n of_o the_o book_n of_o scripture_n themselves_o
in_o controversy_n by_o when_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o text_n be_v questionable_a upon_o the_o same_o ground_n that_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o general_n be_v again_o when_o they_o say_v that_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o church_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o this_o our_o faith_n they_o tell_v we_o that_o by_o the_o church_n they_o mean_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o that_o authority_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o the_o truth_n of_o christianity_n atheist_n and_o infidel_n long_o since_o will_v have_v fill_v all_o place_n as_o it_o be_v well_o know_v how_o they_o abound_v in_o the_o popish_a country_n and_o most_o of_o all_o in_o italy_n and_o of_o all_o italy_n most_o in_o rome_n and_o but_o for_o old_a mother_n ignorance_n who_o they_o have_v a_o marvellous_a fondness_n for_o as_o well_o they_o may_v their_o holy_a mother_n the_o church_n will_v by_o this_o time_n have_v have_v but_o a_o very_a small_a number_n of_o child_n or_o friend_n but_o i_o will_v this_o have_v be_v the_o worst_a on_o it_o as_o alas_o it_o be_v not_o for_o multitude_n among_o they_o be_v well_o aware_a that_o they_o be_v mere_o impose_v on_o and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o no_o scripture_n so_o that_o if_o they_o shall_v use_v the_o same_o artifice_n in_o interpret_n all_o other_o text_n they_o will_v make_v the_o bible_n to_o look_v like_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v contrive_v for_o the_o service_n of_o every_o humour_n and_o every_o fancy_n and_o for_o both_o the_o prove_v and_o disprove_v every_o thing_n certain_o if_o we_o shall_v take_v the_o same_o liberty_n in_o understand_v our_o own_o and_o other_o man_n saying_n that_o they_o take_v in_o expound_v the_o forementioned_a and_o the_o like_a say_n of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n speech_n belong_v to_o they_o but_o be_v contradict_v by_o innumerable_a plain_a text_n and_o the_o concurrent_a strain_n both_o of_o the_o new_a and_o old_a testament_n but_o i_o must_v not_o forget_v that_o who_o have_v imbibe_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n doctrine_n concern_v whip_n and_o scourge_n and_o other_o severe_a penance_n viz._n that_o they_o be_v necessary_a not_o only_o for_o mortification_n but_o likewise_o for_o satisfaction_n in_o the_o popish_a sense_n of_o that_o word_n but_o what_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n be_v they_o under_o then_o from_o dread_a of_o god_n vengeance_n in_o believe_v as_o they_o be_v bind_v that_o god_n will_v not_o remit_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n where_o the_o gild_n of_o it_o be_v wash_v away_o with_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n upon_o the_o doctrine_n must_v necessary_o affect_v poor_a credulous_a fool_n that_o she_o have_v invent_v it_o for_o that_o very_a reason_n because_o by_o this_o mean_n she_o bring_v they_o into_o the_o most_o slavish_a subjection_n make_v herself_o mistress_n of_o their_o purse_n and_o be_v enable_v to_o have_v she_o fill_v of_o tyranny_n over_o their_o conscience_n their_o soul_n and_o body_n what_o tongue_n can_v express_v the_o devilishness_n of_o such_o practice_n next_o for_o the_o passion_n of_o shame_n the_o necessity_n of_o all_o people_n of_o both_o sex_n confess_v to_o the_o priest_n which_o be_v enjoin_v by_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n to_o be_v do_v once_o a_o year_n at_o least_o â—_o and_o that_o of_o all_o their_o actual_a sin_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o also_o of_o all_o their_o purpose_n and_o desire_n to_o commit_v they_o nay_o and_o inclination_n too_o what_o violence_n be_v hereby_o do_v to_o the_o modesty_n of_o all_o such_o as_o have_v not_o arrive_v to_o the_o height_n of_o impudence_n this_o be_v to_o use_v the_o word_n of_o the_o learned_a doctor_n more_n as_o if_o all_o the_o modest_a maid_n and_o grave_a matron_n in_o the_o parish_n shall_v strip_v themselves_o stark_o naked_a 78._o and_o in_o that_o manner_n humble_v themselves_o before_o their_o priest_n once_o a_o year_n which_o will_v look_v like_o a_o piece_n of_o unsupportable_a tyranny_n and_o yet_o as_o he_o proceed_v this_o extort_a confession_n upon_o pain_n of_o damnation_n not_o to_o conceal_v any_o thing_n be_v not_o the_o strip_v of_o a_o man_n to_o his_o naked_a body_n but_o the_o strip_v he_o of_o his_o body_n that_o they_o may_v see_v his_o naked_a heart_n and_o so_o by_o the_o force_n of_o this_o superstition_n break_v into_o those_o secret_n which_o it_o be_v only_o the_o due_a privilege_n of_o god_n almighty_a to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o etc._n etc._n and_o last_o what_o anxiety_n and_o solicitude_n must_v those_o papist_n mind_n need_v be_v torment_v with_o who_o be_v at_o all_o concern_v about_o their_o eternal_a state_n by_o reason_n of_o these_o follow_a doctrine_n viz._n that_o of_o the_o dependence_n of_o the_o efficacy_n of_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n we_o shall_v not_o be_v very_o great_o affect_v with_o the_o privilege_n we_o enjoy_v in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o with_o the_o infinite_a goodness_n of_o god_n to_o we_o in_o give_v we_o our_o birth_n and_o education_n in_o a_o church_n which_o afford_v we_o all_o the_o advantage_n of_o which_o that_o church_n like_o a_o cruel_a stepmother_n rob_v her_o child_n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o lay_v before_o we_o the_o scripture_n argument_n for_o our_o confirmation_n in_o the_o christian_a faith_n which_o oblige_v we_o to_o receive_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n upon_o the_o selfsame_a ground_n and_o motive_n that_o be_v propose_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n and_o upon_o no_o other_o we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o not_o only_o give_v we_o free_a leave_n but_o likewise_o enjoin_v we_o to_o read_v the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o deprive_v we_o of_o no_o part_n of_o they_o we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o require_v we_o to_o receive_v nothing_o as_o a_o article_n of_o faith_n upon_o her_o bare_a authority_n that_o assume_v nothing_o of_o infallibility_n to_o herself_o but_o free_o give_v we_o the_o liberty_n of_o try_v all_o thing_n that_o impose_v nothing_o upon_o our_o belief_n or_o practice_n as_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n but_o what_o be_v in_o the_o plain_a and_o most_o express_a term_n to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o bible_n that_o make_v the_o scripture_n a_o complete_a rule_n of_o faith_n and_o add_v not_o one_o syllable_n of_o her_o own_o to_o supply_v their_o defect_n that_o take_v no_o liberty_n in_o her_o constitution_n but_o such_o as_o she_o believe_v to_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o general_n apostolical_a rule_n of_o do_v all_o thing_n decent_o and_o in_o order_n and_o to_o edification_n and_o impose_v these_o not_o as_o of_o divine_a institution_n or_o as_o necessary_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n but_o only_o as_o expedient_a for_o the_o more_o particular_a church_n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o abominate_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n by_o image_n allow_v no_o prayer_n to_o saint_n or_o angel_n but_o only_o to_o the_o true_a god_n by_o the_o alone_a mediation_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ._n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n which_o renounce_v all_o merit_n of_o good_a work_n and_o teach_v we_o to_o expect_v salvation_n only_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o through_o his_o righteousness_n but_o give_v not_o the_o least_o countenance_n to_o licentious_a practice_n or_o remissness_n in_o good_a work_n and_o teach_v the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o purge_v ourselves_o by_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o divine_a grace_n from_o all_o filthiness_n both_o of_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o our_o be_v make_v capable_a of_o god_n complacential_a love_n here_o and_o glory_n hereafter_o last_o whereas_o i_o may_v be_v exceed_o large_a upon_o this_o subject_n we_o live_v in_o a_o church_n wherein_o we_o want_v no_o necessary_a help_n for_o the_o building_n we_o up_o in_o our_o most_o holy_a faith_n or_o our_o have_v the_o design_n of_o our_o saviour_n religion_n happy_o effect_v in_o we_o namely_o the_o reformation_n of_o our_o life_n and_o our_o be_v renew_a after_o the_o image_n of_o god_n which_o consist_v in_o righteousness_n and_o true_a holiness_n o_o that_o at_o length_n we_o can_v become_v more_o eflectual_o sensible_a of_o the_o bless_a privilege_n the_o divine_a goodness_n vouchsafe_v to_o we_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n lest_o we_o be_v make_v to_o prize_n they_o by_o the_o loss_n of_o they_o lest_o our_o general_a monstrous_a ingratitude_n and_o lamentable_a unprofitableness_n under_o they_o and_o the_o wantonness_n peevishness_n and_o causeless_o separation_n of_o multitude_n from_o the_o communion_n of_o this_o church_n provoke_v the_o divine_a majesty_n to_o put_v our_o neck_n once_o more_o under_o the_o iron_n yoke_n of_o those_o tyrant_n which_o make_v such_o vassal_n of_o our_o forefather_n if_o that_o dismal_a day_n shall_v again_o come_v as_o god_n grant_v it_o may_v not_o with_o what_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n of_o soul_n shall_v we_o reflect_v upon_o our_o neglect_v and_o despise_v such_o happy_a opportunity_n as_o we_o now_o enjoy_v what_o will_v we_o not_o then_o glad_o part_v with_o to_o regain_v they_o when_o we_o be_v deprive_v of_o they_o and_o o_o that_o our_o several_a divide_a party_n be_v capable_a of_o be_v persuade_v to_o consider_v sedate_o and_o serious_o before_o it_o be_v too_o late_a what_o their_o only_o be_v a_o true_a christian_a that_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o oblige_v to_o be_v no_o less_o watchful_a over_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o frame_n and_o temper_n of_o his_o mind_n than_o over_o his_o heart_n than_o over_o his_o life_n and_o conversation_n to_o take_v as_o great_a care_n to_o cleanse_v the_o inside_n of_o the_o cup_n and_o platter_n to_o use_v our_o saviour_n expression_n as_o the_o outside_n to_o be_v as_o vigilant_a over_o his_o affection_n as_o over_o his_o outward_a behaviour_n to_o be_v as_o solicitous_a about_o purge_v himself_o from_o all_o immoderate_a love_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n as_o about_o procure_v they_o by_o warrantable_a and_o lawful_a mean_n the_o true_a christian_a make_v as_o much_o conscience_n of_o lust_a after_o a_o woman_n and_o cherish_v impure_a thought_n as_o he_o do_v of_o lascivious_a and_o wanton_a practice_n of_o harbour_v revenge_n in_o his_o breast_n and_o bear_v ill_a will_n to_o any_o as_o of_o repay_v injury_n with_o injury_n he_o need_v not_o to_o be_v make_v sensible_a that_o it_o be_v no_o less_o his_o duty_n to_o forgive_v and_o love_v his_o enemy_n than_o to_o forbear_v revile_v they_o or_o
