christian_a church_n as_o to_o the_o book_n of_o scripture_n and_o the_o doctrine_n therein_o contain_v be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o make_v we_o certain_a i._n e._n all_o particular_a person_n of_o all_o matter_n necessary_a to_o our_o salvation_n so_o that_o the_o substance_n of_o my_o answer_n lie_v in_o these_o three_o thing_n i._o that_o all_o our_o faith_n be_v contain_v in_o scripture_n and_o thereby_o we_o hold_v all_o the_o doctrine_n teach_v by_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n ii_o that_o although_o all_o particular_a person_n may_v not_o reach_v to_o the_o entire_a object_n of_o faith_n contain_v in_o scripture_n yet_o they_o have_v thereby_o a_o certainty_n as_o to_o all_o matter_n necessary_a to_o their_o salvation_n iii_o that_o the_o ground_n of_o certainty_n as_o to_o both_o these_o be_v the_o universal_a testimony_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n concern_v the_o book_n of_o scripture_n and_o the_o doctrine_n contain_v therein_o the_o word_n of_o my_o letter_n be_v we_o be_v to_o consider_v 17._o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v our_o sole_a and_o entire_a rule_n of_o faith_n all_o matter_n necessary_a to_o salvation_n must_v be_v suppose_v those_o point_n of_o a_o trinity_n for_o example_n or_o incarnation_n etc._n etc._n it_o follow_v that_o it_o must_v be_v affirm_v and_o hold_v that_o a_o trinity_n or_o incarnation_n absolute_o be_v that_o moral_a evidence_n be_v absolute_o sufficient_a to_o faith_n but_o withal_o he_o say_v there_o be_v more_o than_o moral_a evidence_n in_o tradition_n let_v now_o any_o indifferent_a person_n compare_v those_o assertion_n together_o if_o moral_a certainty_n be_v uncertainty_n and_o destroy_v the_o essence_n of_o faith_n how_o can_v it_o be_v absolute_o sufficient_a to_o faith_n but_o beside_o the_o contradiction_n he_o have_v by_o this_o one_o assertion_n overthrow_v the_o whole_a design_n of_o his_o catholic_n letter_n for_o if_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v have_v without_o infallible_a certainty_n what_o need_v any_o such_o contend_v about_o it_o for_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o dispute_n be_v about_o such_o faith_n as_o be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n and_o if_o true_a faith_n as_o j._n s._n grant_v which_o be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n may_v be_v have_v without_o their_o pretend_a infallibility_n there_o be_v no_o colour_n leave_v for_o press_v person_n of_o our_o communion_n to_o forsake_v our_o church_n because_o we_o can_v have_v infallible_a certainty_n of_o faith_n when_o themselves_o grant_v that_o we_o may_v be_v save_v without_o it_o and_o what_o sincerity_n be_v to_o be_v expect_v from_o such_o a_o man_n who_o make_v such_o out-cry_n upon_o we_o for_o want_v of_o infallible_a certainty_n for_o faith_n when_o himself_o confess_v that_o moral_a certainty_n be_v sufficient_a to_o faith_n what_o ever_o become_v of_o moral_a certainty_n i_o love_v moral_a honesty_n and_o i_o can_v see_v how_o it_o be_v consistent_a with_o it_o to_o make_v such_o mighty_a pretence_n to_o the_o necessity_n of_o infallible_a certainty_n for_o faith_n even_o in_o his_o catholic_n letter_n which_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o chief_a design_n of_o they_o when_o himself_n have_v declare_v to_o the_o cardinal_n at_o rome_n that_o less_o than_o that_o be_v sufficient_a for_o true_a faith._n but_o the_o secret_a of_o it_o be_v he_o know_v well_o enough_o there_o be_v no_o such_o necessity_n for_o infallible_a certainty_n and_o when_o it_o will_v bring_v he_o off_o he_o can_v own_v it_o but_o among_o we_o heretic_n they_o must_v bluster_v and_o make_v a_o mighty_a noise_n about_o it_o because_o it_o startle_v weak_a and_o injudicious_a people_n and_o they_o find_v nothing_o so_o apt_a to_o terrify_v and_o confound_v they_o like_o infallibility_n which_o like_o a_o flash_n of_o lightning_n do_v not_o help_v they_o to_o see_v better_a but_o strike_v they_o down_o with_o horror_n and_o astonishment_n and_o here_o i_o may_v fair_o stop_v and_o backward_o in_o this_o matter_n to_o undertake_v this_o cause_n 2._o but_o lest_o i_o shall_v seem_v to_o decline_v any_o thing_n which_o may_v seem_v material_a i_o shall_v now_o proceed_v to_o certainty_n upon_o their_o own_o ground_n for_o if_o tradition_n be_v such_o a_o ground_n of_o absolute_a certainty_n as_o they_o assert_v and_o we_o have_v a_o large_a and_o firm_a tradition_n for_o scripture_n than_o they_o can_v produce_v for_o the_o point_n of_o faith_n in_o difference_n between_o we_o than_o it_o be_v evident_a we_o must_v have_v upon_o their_o own_o principle_n a_o ground_n of_o absolute_a certainty_n for_o our_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o main_a point_n of_o the_o conference_n if_o he_o will_v answer_v the_o argument_n he_o must_v either_o deny_v that_o we_o have_v universal_a tradition_n for_o the_o book_n of_o scripture_n or_o that_o universal_a tradition_n be_v a_o ground_n for_o the_o absolute_a certainty_n of_o faith_n either_o of_o these_o way_n he_o have_v say_v something_o to_o the_o purpose_n but_o he_o find_v this_o way_n of_o reason_v too_o hot_a for_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o call_v it_o shift_a and_o trick_v off_o the_o proof_n to_o mr._n g._n and_o so_o fall_v into_o a_o tragical_a declamation_n against_o my_o not_o prove_v and_o make_v a_o secret_a of_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o certainty_n as_o if_o a_o man_n intend_v to_o make_v a_o secret_a of_o a_o horse_n he_o have_v lose_v when_o he_o publish_v his_o mark_n in_o the_o gazett_n here_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o our_o certainty_n lay_v down_o in_o that_o very_a place_n where_o he_o say_v i_o shift_v off_o the_o proof_n to_o mr._n g._n but_o alas_o for_o he_o he_o can_v see_v any_o thing_n like_o a_o proof_n unless_o it_o be_v serve_v
credibility_n afford_v such_o evidence_n because_o that_o necessitate_v assent_v and_o it_o be_v observable_a that_o he_o resolve_v faith_n not_o into_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o present_a but_o of_o the_o apostolical_a church_n i_o need_v produce_v no_o more_o to_o show_v what_o a_o stranger_n mr._n s._n be_v to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o his_o own_o church_n or_o else_o what_o a_o obstinate_a opposer_n he_o be_v of_o it_o but_o this_o be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v what_o ground_n of_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n be_v allow_v by_o the_o chief_a divine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o how_o very_o different_a they_o be_v from_o those_o of_o the_o catholic_n letter_n to_o sum_v up_o brief_o therefore_o the_o state_n of_o this_o controversy_n about_o the_o certainty_n of_o our_o faith_n i._o i_o assert_v that_o we_o be_v absolute_o certain_a of_o the_o formal_a object_n of_o our_o faith_n viz._n that_o whatever_o god_n reveal_v be_v true_a and_o to_o be_v profess_v by_o we_o though_o we_o do_v not_o see_v the_o intrinsic_a ground_n of_o it_o ii_o we_o be_v absolute_o certain_a of_o the_o infallible_a rule_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o that_o all_o the_o necessary_a point_n of_o faith_n in_o order_n to_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n be_v therein_o contain_v iii_o the_o general_a certainty_n of_o divine_a faith_n in_o true_a believer_n according_a to_o their_o own_o divine_n do_v not_o depend_v upon_o conclusive_a evidence_n or_o intrinsic_a ground_n but_o a_o inward_a perception_n cause_v by_o divine_a grace_n iu._n particular_a point_n of_o faith_n be_v more_o or_o less_o certain_a according_a to_o the_o evidence_n of_o their_o deduction_n from_o scripture_n as_o the_o rule_n of_o faith._n v._o where_o any_o proposition_n be_v impose_v as_o point_n as_o to_o the_o point_n in_o difference_n between_o we_o and_o those_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n we_o do_v not_o make_v the_o negative_n any_o point_n of_o our_o faith_n any_o further_a than_o oral_n and_o practical_a tradition_n i._o that_o it_o proceed_v upon_o false_a supposition_n as._n 1._o that_o no_o certainty_n can_v be_v attain_v where_o there_o be_v no_o infallibility_n for_o if_o man_n may_v arrive_v at_o certainty_n where_o there_o be_v a_o general_a possibility_n of_o deception_n all_o this_o seem_a demonstration_n come_v to_o nothing_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n all_o mankind_n be_v agree_v in_o who_o allow_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o certainty_n and_o the_o contrary_a opinion_n be_v which_o mr._n s._n little_a think_v the_o very_a foundation_n of_o seepticism_n viz._n that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o certainty_n unless_o man_n can_v find_v out_o such_o a_o infallible_a mark_n of_o truth_n which_o can_v not_o agree_v to_o what_o be_v false_a as_o he_o may_v have_v learn_v in_o cicero_n lucullus_n without_o send_v he_o to_o pyrrho_n scholar_n and_o till_o zeno_n and_o his_o disciple_n pretend_v to_o find_v out_o this_o scepticism_n gain_v little_a ground_n but_o when_o they_o yield_v to_o that_o principle_n that_o no_o certainty_n be_v to_o be_v have_v without_o it_o than_o a_o mighty_a advantage_n be_v give_v they_o which_o they_o improve_a according_o but_o the_o more_o judicious_a philosopher_n be_v force_v to_o quit_v the_o stoic_n infallible_a mark_n and_o to_o proceed_v upon_o such_o evidence_n of_o perception_n and_o philosopher_n take_v in_o the_o assistance_n of_o reason_n which_o though_o not_o infallible_a may_v give_v such_o evidence_n as_o afford_v certainty_n where_o it_o fall_v short_a of_o demonstration_n as_o in_o physical_a and_o moral_a thing_n i_o grant_v that_o some_o of_o those_o who_o talk_v most_o and_o best_a of_o demonstration_n fall_v wonderful_o short_a of_o it_o when_o they_o come_v to_o apply_v notion_n to_o thing_n and_o the_o demonstration_n they_o make_v be_v to_o little_a or_o no_o purpose_n in_o the_o promote_a of_o knowledge_n as_o that_o man_n be_v a_o rational_a creature_n etc._n etc._n but_o their_o physical_a speculation_n be_v very_o far_o from_o it_o yet_o this_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o that_o a_o certainty_n be_v attainable_a as_o to_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o in_o moral_n they_o know_v and_o confess_v there_o can_v be_v no_o demonstration_n in_o they_o yet_o they_o profess_v a_o true_a certainty_n they_o have_v as_o to_o the_o nature_n of_o happiness_n and_o the_o real_a difference_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n they_o own_v some_o moral_a principle_n to_o be_v absolute_o certain_a as_o that_o good_a be_v to_o be_v choose_v and_o evil_a to_o be_v avoid_v etc._n etc._n but_o in_o particular_a case_n they_o make_v use_v of_o the_o best_a reason_n they_o have_v to_o prove_v some_o thing_n good_a and_o other_o evil._n and_o although_o they_o can_v not_o proceed_v with_o equal_a certainty_n in_o all_o virtue_n and_o vice_n yet_o in_o some_o they_o have_v clear_a evidence_n and_o in_o other_o they_o make_v use_v of_o the_o best_a mean_n to_o give_v satisfaction_n to_o themselves_o and_o other_o thus_o it_o be_v in_o matter_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v some_o thing_n
absolute_o certain_a as_o that_o god_n can_v deceive_v we_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v our_o rule_n of_o faith_n but_o then_o whether_o such_o point_n be_v contain_v in_o that_o rule_n and_o be_v of_o divine_a revelation_n be_v not_o self-evident_a and_o therefore_o these_o must_v be_v deduce_v by_o all_o the_o best_a method_n of_o reason_v from_o a_o write_a rule_n and_o when_o person_n have_v examine_v the_o scripture_n with_o all_o the_o care_n and_o diligence_n which_o one_o who_o will_v arrive_v at_o certainty_n think_v himself_o oblige_v to_o than_o i_o do_v affirm_v that_o real_o be_v so_o yet_o we_o suppose_v the_o question_n to_o be_v about_o he_o whether_o he_o be_v a_o infallible_a teacher_n or_o not_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o suppose_v the_o thing_n to_o
