●o_o unskilful_a in_o government_n as_o the_o name_n they_o give_v they_o do_v import_v it_o be_v indeed_o not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o that_o the_o division_n make_v of_o the_o empire_n by_o theodosius_n between_o his_o two_o son_n arcadius_n and_o honorius_n into_o the_o eastern_a and_o western_a do_v very_o much_o precipitate_v the_o ruin_n of_o it_o for_o though_o the_o former_a for_o many_o age_n after_o make_v a_o shift_n to_o keep_v up_o yet_o it_o come_v infinite_o short_a of_o the_o ancient_a roman_a empire_n for_o power_n and_o splendour_n and_o be_v so_o harass_v by_o syria_n egypt_n and_o cilicia_n by_o the_o city_n of_o trebizon_n and_o the_o neighbour_a country_n withdraw_v themselves_o from_o under_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o and_o choose_v a_o emperor_n of_o their_o own_o as_o greece_n set_v up_o divers_a petty_a prince_n to_o govern_v the_o different_a part_n of_o it●_n that_o the_o poor_a remain_v thereof_o be_v not_o only_o swallow_v up_o at_o length_n by_o the_o turk_n but_o most_o of_o the_o say_v conquer_v or_o revolt_a division_n to_o other_o very_a great_a acquisition_n of_o their_o own_o make_v both_o before_o and_o after_o fall_v under_o their_o dominion_n also_o which_o make_v they_o for_o a_o time_n more_o formidable_a in_o power_n than_o any_o other_o single_a dominion_n know_v to_o we_o in_o those_o part_n of_o the_o world_n but_o the_o fate_n of_o the_o west_n part_v of_o that_o divide_a empire_n come_v on_o a_o pace_n the_o same_o become_v a_o prey_n to_o the_o german_n and_o goth_n who_o about_o this_o time_n come_v in_o prodigious_a number_n to_o change_v their_o poor_a habitation_n for_o the_o pleasant_a and_o fertile_a province_n of_o the_o roman_n britain_n become_v a_o prey_n to_o the_o saxon_n spain_n fall_v to_o the_o share_n of_o the_o west-goth_n the_o goth_n burgundian_n and_o frank_n make_v bold_a with_o divide_v france_n between_o they_o rhoetia_n and_o noricum_n be_v conquer_v by_o the_o suevian_o a_o great_a part_n of_o pannonia_n and_o illiricum_n fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o huns_n the_o vandal_n fix_v their_o habitation_n in_o africa_n and_o one_o part_n of_o the_o goth_n set_v up_o a_o kingdom_n in_o italy_n and_o do_v not_o think_v rome_n once_z mistress_z of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o common_a mother_n and_o habitation_n of_o mankind_n a_o fit_a place_n for_o their_o king_n to_o reside_v in_o the_o empire_n be_v thus_o mangle_v and_o rend_v into_o so_o many_o different_a piece_n the_o next_o thing_n according_a to_o the_o course_n of_o a_o corrupt_a and_o vain_a world_n these_o invader_n go_v upon_o after_o some_o tolerable_a settlement_n in_o their_o respective_a acquisition_n be_v to_o encroach_v upon_o their_o neighbour_n and_o to_o endeavour_v to_o introduce_v such_o a_o dominion_n again_o upon_o the_o earth_n as_o might_n in_o imitation_n of_o that_o glorious_a empire_n which_o all_o of_o they_o in_o their_o several_a turn_v have_v give_v a_o helping-hand_n to_o overthrow_v overtop_n all_o other_o and_o merit_v the_o name_n of_o a_o supreme_a and_o universal_a one_o but_o there_o have_v hitherto_o in_o the_o course_n of_o divine_a providence_n such_o rub_n be_v lay_v in_o the_o way_n of_o this_o design_n that_o it_o can_v never_o be_v accomplish_v though_o divers_a prince_n have_v attempt_v it_o with_o the_o great_a application_n and_o some_o seem_a probability_n of_o success_n as_o island_n be_v not_o so_o liable_a to_o be_v invade_v as_o those_o kingdom_n and_o state_n that_o lie_v upon_o the_o continent_n so_o neither_o be_v they_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n so_o proper_a to_o make_v conquest_n of_o other_o and_o to_o enlarge_v their_o territory_n and_o if_o great_a britain_n have_v come_v in_o any_o respect_n short_a of_o other_o country_n in_o this_o particular_a this_o be_v a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o it_o but_o there_o be_v other_o cause_n and_o consideration_n which_o we_o shall_v a_o little_a consider_v before_o we_o go_v any_o far_o though_o though_o saxon_n make_v a_o entire_a conquest_n of_o the_o best_a and_o fruitfull_a part_n of_o britain_n yet_o neither_o the_o most_o northern_a part_n of_o the_o island_n possess_v by_o the_o pict_n and_o scot_n nor_o the_o southern_a know_v since_o by_o the_o name_n of_o cornwall_n much_o less_o the_o ancient_a habitation_n of_o the_o britain_n wrongful_o call_v wales_n can_v they_o subdue_v in_o a_o long_a time_n nor_o the_o first_o indeed_o at_o all_o entire_o add_v to_o this_o that_o the_o saxon_n themselves_o have_v no_o less_o than_o seven_o dynasty_n or_o petty_a kingdom_n among_o they_o know_v all_o together_o by_o the_o heptarchy_n which_o take_v they_o up_o from_o their_o first_o land_v under_o hengist_n by_o alliance_n and_o the_o power_n of_o their_o arm_n not_o much_o less_o than_o 400_o year_n to_o unite_v they_o into_o one_o monarchy_n which_o happen_v under_o k._n egbert_n about_o the_o year_n 800._o but_o though_o this_o conjunction_n of_o seven_o into_o one_o be_v very_o considerable_a and_o that_o now_o some_o grand_a effort_n may_v have_v be_v make_v for_o reduce_v the_o remain_a part_n of_o the_o island_n under_o one_o head_n the_o dane_n now_o a_o very_a potent_a and_o seafaring_a people_n in_o the_o very_a same_o king_n reign_n invade_v britain_n between_o who_o and_o the_o english_a there_o be_v continual_a war_n for_o the_o space_n of_o 240_o year_n and_o the_o former_a so_o far_o prevail_v that_o three_o of_o their_o king_n reign_v successive_o over_o england_n for_o 26_o year_n when_o the_o government_n return_v again_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o english_a but_o it_o be_v so_o weak_a and_o feeble_a that_o in_o a_o short_a time_n it_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o will._n surname_v the_o conqueror_n and_o his_o norman_n in_o who_o son_n be_v reign_n henry_n i._n by_o name_n the_o dukedom_n of_o normandy_n be_v annex_v to_o the_o crown_n of_o england_n this_o so_o considerable_a accession_n of_o strength_n upon_o the_o continent_n come_v yet_o short_a of_o a_o compensation_n for_o the_o still_o remain_v disjunction_n of_o scotland_n and_o wales_n from_o the_o rest_n of_o britain_n which_o the_o succeed_a king_n little_o mind_v to_o effect_v for_o though_o henry_n ii_o be_v the_o great_a king_n at_o this_o time_n in_o our_o western_a world_n from_o go_v through_o stitch_n with_o his_o intend_a conquest_n of_o wales_n or_o reduce_v scotland_n that_o his_o chief_a aim_n be_v upon_o the_o conquest_n of_o ireland_n which_o though_o a_o noble_a design_n and_o in_o a_o very_a great_a measure_n effect_v yet_o it_o be_v misplace_v and_o shall_v have_v follow_v the_o reduction_n of_o the_o other_o two_o yet_o what_o come_v to_o henry_n upon_o the_o continent_n by_o right_a of_o inheritance_n his_o son_n king_n john_n and_o his_o grandson_n henry_n iii_o in_o a_o manner_n total_o lose_v but_o of_o all_o the_o king_n of_o england_n to_o this_o time_n edward_n i._o be_v the_o only_a prince_n that_o seem_v to_o have_v a_o right_a notion_n of_o extend_v his_o dominion_n and_o therefore_o he_o never_o give_v over_o till_o what_o by_o fair_a and_o foul_a mean_n with_o a_o intermixture_n of_o policy_n he_o entire_o unite_a wales_n to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o england_n and_o make_v in_o a_o manner_n by_o the_o same_o method_n a_o perfect_a conquest_n of_o scotland_n which_o nothing_o humane_o speak_v but_o the_o weakness_n of_o his_o successor_n obstruct_v the_o consummation_n of_o so_o that_o henceforward_o all_o the_o thought_n of_o our_o warlike_a king_n be_v the_o recovery_n of_o that_o right_n they_o allege_v to_o have_v to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o france_n who_o conquest_n there_o if_o they_o have_v be_v as_o
