declaration_n and_o vindication_n of_o john_n pym_n esquire_n it_o be_v not_o unknown_a to_o all_o the_o world_n especial_o to_o the_o inhabitant_n in_o and_o about_o the_o city_n of_o london_n with_o what_o desperate_a and_o fame-wounding_a aspersion_n my_o reputation_n and_o the_o integrity_n of_o my_o intention_n to_o god_n my_o king_n and_o my_o country_n have_v be_v invade_v by_o the_o malice_n and_o fury_n of_o malignant_n and_o ill-affected_a person_n to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o commonwealth_n some_o charge_v i_o to_o have_v be_v the_o promoter_n and_o patronizer_n of_o all_o the_o innovation_n which_o have_v be_v obtrude_v upon_o the_o ecclesiastical_a government_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n other_o of_o more_o spiteful_a and_o exorbitant_a spirit_n allege_v that_o i_o only_o have_v be_v the_o man_n who_o have_v beget_v and_o foster_v all_o the_o so_o lament_a distraction_n which_o be_v now_o rife_o in_o this_o kingdom_n and_o though_o such_o calumny_n be_v ever_o more_o harmful_a to_o the_o author_n than_o to_o those_o who_o they_o strive_v to_o wound_v with_o they_o when_o they_o arrive_v only_o to_o the_o censure_n of_o judicious_a person_n who_o can_v distinguish_v form_n and_o see_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o truth_n and_o falsehood_n yet_o because_o the_o scandal_n inflict_v upon_o my_o innocence_n have_v be_v obvious_a to_o people_n of_o all_o condition_n many_o of_o which_o may_v entertain_v a_o belief_n of_o those_o reproachful_a report_n though_o in_o my_o own_o soul_n i_o be_o far_o above_o those_o ignominy_n and_o so_o be_v once_o resolve_v to_o have_v waive_v they_o as_o unworthy_a my_o notice_n yet_o at_o last_o for_o the_o assertion_n of_o my_o integrity_n i_o conclude_v to_o declare_v myself_o in_o this_o matter_n that_o all_o the_o world_n but_o such_o as_o will_v not_o be_v convince_v either_o by_o reason_n or_o truth_n may_v hear_v testimony_n of_o my_o innocence_n to_o pass_v by_o therefore_o the_o earl_n of_o strafford_n business_n in_o which_o some_o have_v be_v so_o impudent_a as_o to_o charge_v i_o of_o too_o much_o partiality_n and_o malice_n i_o shall_v declare_v myself_o full_o concern_v the_o rest_n of_o their_o aspersion_n namely_o that_o i_o have_v promote_v and_o foment_v the_o difference_n and_o schism_n now_o abound_v in_o the_o english_a church_n how_o unlikely_a this_o be_v and_o improbable_a shall_v to_o every_o indifferent_a man_n be_v quick_o render_v perspicuous_a for_o that_o i_o be_o and_o ever_o be_v and_o so_o will_v die_v a_o faithful_a son_n of_o the_o protestant_a with_o my_o conversation_n can_v bear_v i_o righteous_a witness_n these_o be_v but_o aspersion_n cast_v upon_o i_o by_o some_o of_o the_o discontent_a clergy_n and_o their_o fautor_n and_o abettor_n because_o they_o may_v perhaps_o conceive_v that_o i_o have_v be_v a_o main_a instrument_n in_o extenuate_v the_o haughty_a power_n and_o ambitious_a pride_n of_o the_o bishop_n and_o prelate_n which_o if_o i_o have_v be_v as_o i_o only_o deliver_v my_o opinion_n as_o a_o member_n of_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o that_o attempt_n or_o action_n of_o i_o have_v be_v justifiable_a both_o to_o god_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o have_v no_o way_n conclude_v i_o guilty_a of_o revolt_n from_o the_o orthodox_n doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n because_o i_o seek_v a_o reformation_n of_o some_o gross_a abuse_n creep_v into_o its_o government_n by_o the_o cunning_a and_o perverseness_n of_o the_o bishop_n and_o their_o substitute_n for_o be_v it_o not_o high_a time_n to_o seek_v to_o regulate_v their_o power_n who_o in_o stead_n of_o look_v to_o the_o cure_n of_o man_n soul_n which_o be_v their_o genuine_a office_n they_o inflict_v punishment_n on_o man_n body_n banish_v they_o to_o remote_a and_o desolate_a place_n after_o stigmatise_v their_o face_n only_o for_o the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n when_o not_o content_v with_o those_o insufferable_a insolence_n they_o seek_v to_o bring_v in_o unheard_a of_o canon_n into_o the_o church_n arminian_n or_o papistical_a ceremony_n whether_o you_o please_v to_o term_v they_o there_o be_v not_o much_o difference_n impose_v burden_n upon_o man_n conscience_n which_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bear_v and_o introduce_v the_o old_a abolish_v superstition_n of_o bow_v to_o the_o altar_n and_o if_o it_o savour_v either_o of_o brownism_n or_o anabaptism_n to_o endeavour_v to_o suppress_v the_o growth_n of_o those_o romish_a error_n i_o appeal_v to_o any_o equal_a mind_a protestant_n either_o for_o my_o judge_n and_o witness_v nay_o have_v the_o attempr_n of_o the_o bishop_n desist_v here_o tolerable_a they_o have_v be_v and_o their_o power_n not_o so_o much_o question_v as_o since_o it_o have_v be_v for_o which_o they_o see_v the_o honourable_a the_o high_a court_n of_o parliament_n begin_v to_o look_v into_o their_o enormity_n and_o abuse_n behold_v how_o they_o wrest_a religion_n like_o a_o waxen_a nose_n to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o their_o ambitious_a purpose_n then_o troy_n be_v take_v in_o than_o they_o begin_v to_o despair_v of_o hold_v any_o long_o their_o usurp_a authority_n and_o therefore_o as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lay_v both_o by_o public_a declamation_n and_o private_a counsel_n they_o labour_v to_o foment_n the_o civil_a difference_n between_o his_o majesty_n and_o his_o parliament_n abet_v the_o proceed_n of_o the_o malignant_n with_o large_a supply_n of_o man_n and_o money_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o people_n to_o tumult_n by_o their_o seditious_a sermon_n sure_o then_o no_o man_n can_v account_v i_o a_o ill_a son_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n if_o i_o deliver_v my_o opinion_n and_o pass_v my_o vote_n free_o for_o their_o abolishment_n which_o may_v by_o the_o same_o equity_n be_v put_v in_o practice_n by_o this_o parliament_n as_o the_o dissolution_n of_o monastery_n and_o their_o lazy_a inhabitant_n monk_n and_o friar_n be_v in_o henry_n the_o eighths_n time_n for_o without_o dispute_n they_o carry_v as_o much_o reputation_n in_o the_o kingdom_n then_o as_o bishop_n have_v do_v in_o it_o since_o and_o yet_o a_o parliament_n than_o have_v power_n to_o put_v they_o down_o why_o then_o shall_v not_o a_o parliament_n have_v power_n to_o do_v the_o like_a to_o these_o every_o way_n guilty_a of_o as_o many_o offence_n against_o the_o state_n as_o the_o former_a for_o i_o own_o part_n i_o attest_v god_n almighty_a the_o knower_n of_o all_o heart_n that_o neither_o envy_n or_o any_o private_a grudge_n to_o all_o or_o any_o of_o the_o bishop_n have_v make_v i_o adverse_a to_o their_o function_n but_o mere_o my_o zeal_n to_o religion_n and_o god_n cause_n which_o i_o perceive_v to_o be_v trample_v under_o foot_n by_o the_o too_o extend_a authority_n of_o the_o prelate_n who_o according_a to_o the_o purity_n of_o their_o institution_n shall_v have_v be_v man_n of_o upright_a heart_n and_o humble_a mind_n shear_v their_o flock_n and_o not_o flay_v they_o when_o it_o be_v evident_a they_o be_v the_o quite_o contrary_a and_o whereas_o some_o will_v allege_v it_o be_v no_o good_a argument_n to_o dissolve_v the_o function_n of_o bishop_n because_o some_o bishop_n be_v vicious_a to_o that_o i_o answer_v since_o the_o vice_n of_o those_o bishop_n be_v derivative_a from_o the_o authority_n of_o their_o function_n it_o be_v very_o fit_v the_o function_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n thereof_o be_v correct_v and_o its_o authority_n devest_v of_o its_o borrow_a feather_n otherwise_o it_o be_v impossible_a but_o the_o same_o power_n which_o make_v these_o present_a bishop_n shall_v the_o episcopal_a and_o prelatical_a dignity_n continue_v in_o its_o ancient_a height_n and_o vigour_n so_o proud_a and_o arrogant_a will_v infuse_v the_o same_o vice_n into_o their_o successor_n but_o this_o be_v but_o a_o molehill_n to_o that_o mountain_n of_o scandalous_a report_n that_o have_v be_v inflict_v on_o my_o integrity_n to_o his_o sacred_a majesty_n some_o bold_o aver_v i_o for_o the_o author_n of_o the_o present_a distraction_n between_o his_o majesty_n and_o his_o parliament_n when_o i_o take_v god_n and_o all_o that_o know_v my_o proceed_n to_o be_v my_o voucher_n that_o i_o neither_o direct_o nor_o indirect_o ever_o have_v a_o thought_n tend_v to_o the_o least_o disobedience_n or_o disloyalty_n to_o his_o majesty_n who_o i_o acknowledge_v my_o lawful_a king_n and_o sovereign_n and_o will_v expend_v my_o blood_n as_o soon_o in_o his_o service_n as_o any_o subject_a he_o have_v it_o be_v true_a when_o i_o perceive_v my_o life_n aim_v at_o and_o hear_v myself_o proscribe_v a_o traitor_n mere_o for_o my_o entireness_n of_o hearrt_n to_o the_o service_n of_o my_o country_n be_v inform_v that_o i_o with_o some_o other_o honourable_a and_o worthy_a member_n of_o the_o parliament_n be_v against_o the_o privilege_n thereof_o demand_v even_o in_o the_o parliament_n house_n by_o his_o majesty_n attend_v by_o a_o multitude_n of_o man_n at_o arm_n and_o malignant_n who_o i_o very_o believe_v have_v for_o some_o ill_a end_n of_o their_o own_o persuade_v his_o majesty_n to_o that_o excess_n of_o rigour_n against_o we_o when_o for_o my_o own_o part_n my_o conscience_n be_v to_o i_o a_o thousand_o witness_n in_o that_o behalf_n i_o never_o harbour_v a_o thought_n which_o tend_v to_o any_o dis-service_n to_o his_o majesty_n nor_o ever_o have_v a_o intention_n prejudicial_a to_o the_o state_n when_o i_o say_v notwithstanding_o my_o own_o innocence_n i_o see_v myself_o in_o such_o apparent_a danger_n no_o man_n will_v think_v i_o blame-worthy_a in_o that_o i_o take_v a_o care_n of_o my_o own_o safety_n and_o flee_v for_o refuge_n to_o the_o protection_n of_o the_o parliament_n which_o make_v my_o case_n their_o own_o not_o only_o purge_v i_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o treason_n but_o also_o secure_v our_o life_n from_o the_o storm_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o burst_v out_o upon_o they_o and_o if_o this_o have_v be_v the_o occasion_n that_o have_v withdraw_v his_o majesty_n from_o his_o parliament_n sure_o the_o fault_n can_v no_o way_n be_v impute_v to_o i_o or_o any_o proceed_n of_o i_o which_o never_o go_v further_o neither_o since_o his_o majesty_n nor_o before_o then_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v warrant_v by_o the_o know_a law_n of_o the_o land_n and_o authorize_v by_o the_o indisputable_a and_o undeniable_a power_n of_o the_o parliament_n and_o so_o long_o as_o i_o be_o secure_a in_o my_o own_o conscience_n that_o this_o be_v truth_n i_o account_v myself_o above_o all_o their_o calumny_n and_o falsehood_n which_o shall_v return_v upon_o themselves_o and_o not_o wound_v my_o reputation_n in_o good_a and_o impartial_a man_n opinion_n but_o in_o that_o devilish_a conspiracy_n of_o catiline_n against_o the_o state_n and_o senate_n of_o rome_n none_o among_o the_o senator_n be_v so_o obnoxious_a to_o the_o envy_n of_o the_o conspirator_n or_o liable_a to_o their_o traducement_n as_o that_o great_a orator_n and_o patriot_n of_o his_o country_n cicero_n because_o by_o his_o counsel_n and_o zeal_n to_o the_o commonwealth_n their_o plot_n for_o the_o ruin_n thereof_o be_v discover_v and_o prevent_v though_o i_o will_v not_o be_v so_o arrogant_a to_o parallel_v myself_o with_o that_o worthy_a yet_o my_o case_n if_o we_o may_v compare_v lesser_a thing_n with_o great_a have_v to_o his_o a_o very_a near_o resemblance_n the_o cause_n that_o i_o be_o so_o much_o malign_v and_o reproach_v by_o ill-affected_a person_n be_v because_o i_o have_v be_v forward_o in_o advance_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o have_v be_v take_v notice_n of_o for_o that_o forwardness_n they_o out_o of_o their_o malice_n convert_v that_o to_o a_o vice_n which_o without_o boast_n be_v it_o speak_v i_o esteem_v as_o my_o principal_a virtue_n my_o care_n to_o the_o public_a utility_n and_o since_o it_o be_v for_o that_o cause_n that_o i_o suffer_v these_o scandal_n i_o shall_v endure_v they_o with_o patience_n hope_v that_o god_n in_o his_o great_a mercy_n will_v at_o last_o reconcile_v his_o majesty_n to_o his_o high_a court_n of_o parliament_n and_o then_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o to_o give_v his_o royal_a self_n though_o he_o be_v much_o incense_v against_o i_o a_o sufficient_a account_n of_o my_o integrity_n in_o the_o interim_n i_o hope_v the_o world_n will_v believe_v that_o i_o be_o not_o the_o first_o innocent_a man_n that_o have_v be_v
