to_o publish_v the_o same_o the_o âext_n sunday_n after_o tender_v to_o they_o i_o think_v it_o too_o large_a to_o expose_v they_o all_o in_o print_n but_o i_o think_v it_o convenient_a to_o print_v the_o last_o of_o they_o and_o i_o shall_v mention_v particular_n of_o their_o resolve_n in_o the_o former_a with_o some_o observation_n thereon_o and_o then_o lâave_a iâ_n to_o the_o moderate_a to_o judge_n but_o before_o i_o go_v on_o with_o this_o it_o come_v to_o my_o mind_n what_o the_o author_n of_o the_o letter_n say_v viz._n it_o be_v not_o âo_o long_o since_o as_o to_o be_v forget_v that_o the_o maxim_n be_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o dissenter_n not_o to_o be_v a_o rebel_n i_o may_v give_v a_o few_o word_n in_o answer_n hereunto_o it_o seem_v this_o to_o be_v the_o maxim_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o suppose_v none_o question_n but_o that_o the_o bishop_n justices_z and_o grand_a âury_n oâ_n the_o county_n of_o devon_n be_v church_n of_o england_n men._n and_o in_o their_o preface_n to_o the_o âirst_n order_n of_o the_o ten_o of_o january_n 1681._o they_o thus_o express_v themselves_o viz._n forasmuch_o as_o religion_n be_v the_o foundation_n of_o civil_a government_n and_o while_o faction_n and_o schism_n be_v allow_v and_o permit_v in_o the_o church_n we_o can_v never_o expect_v peace_n and_o quiet_a in_o the_o state_n and_o observe_v at_o this_o time_n as_o we_o have_v by_o sad_a experience_n heretofore_o that_o those_o that_o dissent_n from_o we_o in_o our_o establish_v religion_n of_o what_o persuasion_n soever_o though_o at_o seem_a variance_n and_o difference_n among_o themselves_o yet_o they_o agree_v in_o their_o wicked_a attempt_n upon_o the_o government_n and_o their_o traitorous_a plot_n and_o design_n against_o the_o king_n sacred_a person_n and_o therefore_o do_v unanimous_o resolve_v effectual_o to_o put_v the_o law_n in_o execution_n against_o all_o dissenter_n whether_o papist_n or_o sectary_n and_o so_o by_o this_o its_o manifest_a that_o be_v their_o maxim_n and_o âo_o you_o may_v see_v what_o quarter_n the_o dissenter_n be_v like_a to_o have_v from_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o in_o their_o order_n of_o the_o second_o of_o october_n 1683._o they_o thus_o express_v themselves_o we_o have_v be_v so_o abundant_o convince_v of_o the_o seditious_a and_o rebellious_a practice_n of_o the_o sectary_n and_o fanatic_n who_o through_o the_o course_n of_o a_o hundred_o year_n since_o we_o be_v first_o infect_v with_o they_o have_v scarce_o afford_v this_o unhappy_a kingdom_n any_o interval_n of_o rest_n from_o their_o horrid_a treason_n as_o that_o we_o must_v esteem_v they_o not_o only_o the_o open_a enemy_n of_o our_o establish_a government_n but_o to_o all_o the_o common_a principle_n of_o society_n and_o humanity_n itself_o wherefore_o that_o we_o may_v prevent_v their_o horrid_a conspiracy_n for_o time_n to_o come_v we_o resolve_v to_o put_v the_o severe_a of_o the_o law_n which_o we_o find_v too_o easy_a and_o gentle_a unless_o enliven_v by_o a_o vigorous_a execution_n in_o force_n against_o against_o they_o now_o observe_v o_o how_o horrible_a zealous_a and_o charitable_n be_v these_o church_n man_n of_o england_n it_o seem_v nothing_o but_o a_o vigorous_a execution_n of_o those_o law_n will_v serve_v their_o turn_n and_o what_o these_o law_n be_v may_v be_v see_v in_o a_o book_n late_o put_v forth_o call_v draconica_n which_o one_o whereof_o at_o least_o be_v death_n without_o conformity_n be_v these_o the_o old_a friend_n that_o the_o author_n of_o the_o letter_n talk_v of_o we_o may_v well_o say_v from_o such_o friend_n good_a lord_n deliver_v we_o far_o better_a venture_n to_o cast_v ourselves_o on_o the_o new_a may_v we_o not_o just_o reason_n aâ_n the_o foâr_n leprous_a man_n do_v that_o be_v without_o the_o gate_n of_o samaria_n 2._o king_n 7.3_o 4._o that_o if_o they_o stay_v there_o they_o must_v die_v and_o the_o like_a if_o they_o go_v into_o the_o city_n and_o then_o resolve_v to_o fall_v into_o the_o host_n of_o the_o assyrian_n etc._n etc._n and_o what_o be_v our_o case_n better_o in_o relation_n to_o âur_n old_a friend_n for_o by_o these_o law_n here_o be_v nothing_o but_o loss_n of_o all_o visible_a enjoyment_n for_o the_o conventicle_n act_n will_v soon_o fetch_v all_o that_o away_o and_o the_o thirty_o five_o of_o elizabeth_n take_v life_n and_o all_o aâd_v no_o ransoâ_n to_o be_v accept_v but_o the_o shipwreck_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o so_o everlasting_a life_n a_o dear_a purchase_n indeed_o and_o as_o for_o the_o former_a war_n in_o this_o land_n may_v not_o the_o ground_n of_o they_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n be_v impute_v to_o the_o violent_a persecution_n of_o church_n of_o england_n man_n against_o people_n for_o their_o conscience_n and_o as_o for_o the_o late_a rebellion_n be_v none_o engage_v therein_o but_o such_o as_o these_o man_n call_v sectary_n and_o fanatic_n it_o be_v well_o know_v to_o the_o contrary_a be_v not_o monmouth_n a_o church_n of_o england_n man_n and_o the_o lord_n grace_n a_o church_n of_o england_n man_n and_o other_o eminent_a man_n who_o suffer_v and_o the_o most_o part_n of_o those_o that_o be_v condemn_v on_o that_o account_n be_v such_o as_o do_v frequent_v the_o service_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n so_o that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n man_n be_v âot_n the_o only_a man_n free_a of_o thât_n which_o be_v charge_v upon_o dissenter_n and_o in_o their_o order_n of_o the_o ten_o of_o january_n 1681_o they_o say_v we_o order_v and_o agree_v that_o all_o churchwarden_n and_o overseer_n for_o the_o poor_a that_o shall_v give_v and_o allow_v any_o relief_n to_o any_o that_o be_v able_a of_o body_n and_o do_v not_o repair_v every_o sunday_n to_o their_o parish_n church_n and_o there_o abide_v sober_o and_o orderly_o during_o the_o whole_a time_n of_o divine_a service_n no_o such_o contribution_n in_o the_o pass_a their_o act_n shall_v be_v allow_v what_o law_n there_o be_v for_o this_o i_o know_v not_o some_o wise_a church_n man_n of_o some_o eminency_n have_v declare_v their_o opinion_n otherwise_o but_o it_o seem_v by_o this_o devenshire_n law_n the_o poor_a must_v come_v to_o church_n or_o starve_v and_o the_o bishop_n high_o approve_v this_o order_n and_o say_v they_o that_o sign_v it_o which_o be_v twenty_o eight_o justice_n of_o the_o peace_n have_v approve_v themselves_o good_a subject_n to_o his_o majesty_n true_a son_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o good_a patriâts_n of_o their_o country_n the_o lord_n will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_n but_o these_o man_n will_v have_v sacrifice_n without_o mercy_n and_o in_o their_o order_n of_o the_o twenty_o five_o of_o april_n 1682._o they_o say_v tâat_o no_o person_n shall_v be_v permit_v to_o keep_v alehouse_n but_o such_o as_o repair_v to_o church_n and_o produce_v a_o certificate_n that_o they_o have_v at_o least_o twice_o in_o the_o year_n last_o pass_v receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n according_a to_o the_o usage_n of_o the_o church_n to_o england_n observe_v it_o seem_v right_a or_o wrong_n they_o must_v receive_v it_o or_o not_o sell_v ale_n though_o they_o eat_v and_o drink_v their_o own_o damnation_n it_o be_v the_o usage_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o i_o find_v no_o such_o usage_n in_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o now_o consider_v here_o be_v sacrifice_n require_v but_o no_o mercy_n to_o body_n nor_o soul._n and_o in_o the_o same_o order_n they_o say_v and_o we_o will_v have_v all_o those_o schismatical_a factious_a people_n who_o upbraid_v we_o with_o the_o countenance_v debauchery_n &_o ludeness_n to_o look_v back_o upon_o the_o late_a time_n and_o they_o will_v find_v it_o be_v their_o schism_n and_o rebellion_n and_o which_o be_v prologue_v with_o such_o a_o entry_n as_o this_o too_o which_o at_o first_o weaken_v and_o at_o last_o break_v down_o the_o bank_n of_o government_n and_o let_v in_o upon_o we_o a_o deluge_n of_o proâainness_n and_o irreligion_n these_o man_n will_v seem_v great_o to_o be_v against_o profainness_n and_o irreligion_n and_o zealous_a for_o worship_n and_o service_n have_v they_o forget_v that_o within_o the_o memory_n of_o some_o yet_o alive_a how_o there_o be_v a_o book_n for_o recreation_n to_o be_v use_v on_o the_o sunday_n for_o dance_a and_o other_o sport_n be_v this_o to_o suppress_v or_o encourage_v profainness_n and_o irreligion_n and_o by_o who_o be_v that_o book_n set_v forth_o and_o order_v to_o be_v read_v in_o all_o parish_n church_n in_o the_o kingdom_n and_o several_a minister_n suspend_v for_o refuse_v to_o râad_v it_o and_o when_o the_o church_n of_o england_n after_o a_o time_n of_o interruption_n come_v again_o into_o her_o seat_n what_o a_o flood_n of_o wickedness_n follow_v so_o that_o the_o king_n
such_o disappointment_n be_v come_v upon_o they_o so_o that_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o fret_v &_o curse_v their_o god_n and_o their_o king_n isa._n 8.21_o and_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v such_o but_o âuch_v liberty_n to_o themselves_o by_o which_o they_o may_v keep_v other_o in_o bondage_n i_o say_v unto_o such_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o meddle_v with_o god_n prerogative_n his_o rule_n in_o the_o conscience_n of_o people_n he_o haâh_v long_o bear_v with_o you_o on_o that_o account_n and_o your_o time_n be_v now_o to_o repent_v of_o what_o you_o have_v do_v and_o not_o strive_v âo_o keep_v up_o that_o power_n which_o god_n will_v destroy_v and_o be_v content_a to_o enjoy_v equal_a liberty_n with_o your_o fellow_n subject_n and_o let_v âhose_v lâws_n and_o teâts_n by_o which_o people_n have_v beân_v thus_o long_o enslave_v be_v take_v awaâ_n and_o that_o such_o a_o magna_fw-la charta_fw-la may_v be_v make_v so_o that_o iâ_n may_v never_o be_v iâ_n the_o power_n of_o any_o person_n or_o person_n whatsoever_o to_o tyrannize_v or_o bear_v rule_n over_o the_o conscience_n of_o any_o or_o ruin_n or_o oppress_v they_o in_o their_o person_n or_o estate_n on_o that_o account_n but_o let_v every_o one_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o his_o god_n and_o worship_n he_o as_o god_n shall_v persuade_v he_o in_o his_o conscience_n and_o then_o sit_v down_o quiet_o under_o his_o own_o vine_n micah_n 4.4_o but_o it_o be_v the_o great_a artifice_n of_o that_o spirit_n that_o will_v usurp_v authority_n over_o the_o conscience_n to_o persuade_v people_n that_o if_o the_o test_n be_v take_v away_o than_o popery_n will_v come_v in_o the_o test_n be_v but_o about_o fifteen_o year_n old_a and_o what_o have_v keep_v it_o out_o before_o the_o test_n as_o be_v say_v before_o our_o god_n be_v a_o god_n of_o justice_n and_o mercy_n and_o he_o require_v it_o of_o man_n and_o let_v it_o be_v do_v to_o all_o and_o trust_v god_n with_o the_o event_n do_v not_o people_n thus_o reason_v manifest_a their_o forgetfulness_n of_o god_n as_o indeed_o they_o have_v in_o make_v and_o severe_o excecute_v those_o law_n to_o the_o ruin_n of_o many_o conscientious_a people_n and_o now_o i_o can_v well_o omit_v to_o observe_v the_o spirit_n and_o temper_n of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o lettâr_n to_o dissenter_n what_o insinuation_n he_o use_v sometime_o as_o if_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v blame_v for_o compliance_n and_o account_v trimmer_n for_o endure_a dissenter_n and_o then_o how_o safe_a be_v it_o to_o keep_v to_o they_o and_o many_o insinuation_n against_o the_o king_n as_o his_o dispence_a power_n though_o to_o save_v many_o of_o his_o subject_n from_o ruin_n and_o as_o if_o all_o he_o do_v be_v to_o advance_v his_o own_o prerogative_n with_o many_o insinuation_n tend_v to_o alienate_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o subject_n from_o he_o and_o then_o with_o a_o spirit_n of_o high_a arrogancy_n speak_v proud_o say_v whatever_o may_v be_v tell_v you_o at_o this_o very_a hour_n and_o in_o the_o heat_n and_o glare_v of_o your_o present_a sunshine_n the_o church_n of_o england_n can_v in_o a_o moment_n bring_v cloud_n again_o and_o turn_v the_o royal_a thunder_n upon_o your_o head_n blow_v you_o off_o the_o stage_n with_o a_o breath_n if_o she_o will_v give_v but_o a_o smile_n or_o a_o kind_a word_n the_o least_o glimpse_n of_o her_o compliance_n will_v throw_v you_o back_o into_o the_o state_n of_o suffering_n etc._n etc._n now_o indeed_o if_o we_o measure_v the_o church_n of_o england_n by_o this_o letter_n and_o the_o devonshire_n order_n and_o resolve_v we_o be_v of_o all_o people_n most_o miserable_a however_o we_o be_v not_o affright_v at_o high_a word_n psa._n 12.3_o the_o lord_n shall_v cut_v off_o all_o flatter_a lip_n and_o the_o tongue_n that_o speak_v proud_a thing_n but_o he_o far_o say_v the_o church_n of_o england_n with_o all_o her_o fault_n choose_v rather_o to_o bear_v the_o weight_n of_o her_o purjured_a informer_n and_o envious_a priest_n have_v do_v upon_o many_o honest_a conscientious_a man_n but_o the_o just_a god_n will_v reckon_v with_o she_o for_o all_o and_o i_o can_v yet_o believe_v that_o she_o be_v so_o formidable_a that_o the_o king_n or_o we_o have_v need_n of_o her_o smile_n or_o fear_v the_o want_n of_o they_o what_o virtue_n they_o may_v be_v of_o to_o we_o we_o know_v not_o the_o informer_n and_o such_o like_a have_v have_v they_o as_o yet_o and_o indeed_o there_o must_v be_v a_o great_a change_n in_o she_o or_o we_o if_o ever_o they_o fall_v to_o our_o lot_n however_o we_o have_v live_v under_o her_o cruel_a frown_n and_o be_v yet_o alive_a though_o she_o frow_v at_o that_o too_o when_o god_n shall_v fulfil_v that_o which_o he_o have_v speak_v by_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o prophet_n isâ_n 33.1_o then_o let_v such_o beware_v and_o therefore_o its_o good_a for_o they_o not_o to_o be_v high_o mind_v but_o fear_n the_o author_n sâith_n it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o she_o be_v unprovoke_v book_n and_o letter_n come_v out_o every_o day_n it_o seem_v it_o be_v but_o by_o book_n and_o letter_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o by_o goal_n and_o spoil_v of_o good_n and_o ruine_v of_o widow_n and_o fatherless_a as_o she_o have_v provoke_v god_n and_o many_o of_o his_o people_n and_o will_v she_o now_o be_v offend_v that_o she_o can_v do_v so_o no_o that_o for_o our_o conscience_n towards_o god_n but_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v do_v it_o who_o or_o what_o can_v hinder_v it_o but_o her_o timely_a and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n and_o now_o my_o many_o have_v cruel_o suffer_v and_o trust_v god_n who_o will_v bring_v to_o pass_v his_o great_a work_n and_o if_o he_o have_v raise_v up_o and_o preserve_v the_o king_n for_o that_o purpass_v and_o
