of_o the_o fourteen_o be_v erroneous_a and_o corrupt_a and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o reformation_n those_o of_o the_o five_o may_v have_v be_v so_o too_o for_o any_o thing_n which_o the_o scripture_n can_v assure_v we_o to_o the_o contrary_n this_o rock_n then_o of_o my_o protestant_a faith_n be_v shake_v i_o mean_v a_o belief_n that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v model_v itself_o according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o first_o five_o hundred_o year_n it_o will_v not_o be_v wonder_v at_o if_o at_o least_o i_o give_v way_n to_o some_o doubt_n i_o find_v no_o better_a foot_n in_o that_o way_n which_o be_v take_v by_o those_o church_n of_o england-man_n who_o converse_v more_o with_o roman_a catholic_o than_o with_o protestant_a dissenter_n viz._n scripture_n as_o it_o be_v understand_v by_o every_o private_a man._n first_o because_o those_o who_o take_v that_o way_n differ_v from_o one_o another_o in_o most_o material_a thing_n and_o also_o such_o as_o be_v the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v behold_v to_o tradition_n for_o some_o part_n of_o her_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n as_o infant-baptism_n the_o observation_n of_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n and_o the_o like_a have_v no_o clear_a scripture_n for_o they_o and_o therefore_o can_v not_o hold_v they_o and_o require_v they_o to_o be_v hold_v by_o the_o rule_n of_o scripture_n interpret_v without_o the_o help_n of_o tradition_n three_o because_o it_o be_v sincere_o my_o own_o judgement_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v much_o clear_a for_o the_o catholic_n than_o for_o the_o protestant_n particular_o in_o transubstantiation_n sacramental_a confession_n extreme_a unction_n purgatory_n st._n peter_n supremacy_n and_o last_o and_o chief_o be_v that_o which_o include_v all_o other_o point_n the_o decisive_n authority_n of_o the_o church_n wherefore_o if_o i_o must_v follow_v scripture_n interpret_v by_o myself_o i_o must_v at_o the_o same_o time_n necessary_o cease_v to_o follow_v the_o church_n of_o england_n these_o certain_o be_v motive_n if_o not_o for_o a_o absolute_a departure_n from_o the_o church_n of_o england_n yet_o still_o at_o least_o as_o i_o have_v be_v to_o be_v have_v among_o they_o for_o salvation_n in_o the_o roman_a communion_n both_o church_n concur_v whereas_o for_o the_o latter_a we_o have_v only_o the_o bare_a word_n of_o protestant_n in_o their_o own_o behalf_n who_o likewise_o at_o the_o same_o time_n tell_v we_o they_o be_v fallible_a and_o consequent_o for_o aught_o they_o know_v may_v be_v mistake_v and_o if_o they_o be_v actual_o mistake_v i_o shall_v be_v undo_v by_o rarry_v with_o they_o whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o they_o be_v not_o mistake_v i_o can_v receive_v no_o damage_n by_o be_v among_o the_o with_o those_o who_o as_o they_o say_v can_v thorough_o examine_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o we_o and_o these_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n and_o if_o so_o i_o will_v venture_v to_o add_v that_o god_n almighty_n have_v take_v as_o much_o care_n of_o the_o ignorant_a as_o of_o the_o learned_a will_v never_o permit_v falsehood_n to_o be_v support_v by_o such_o argument_n as_o must_v in_o common_a prudence_n oblige_v all_o unlearned_a person_n to_o be_v engage_v in_o it_o but_o above_o all_o methinks_v this_o argument_n shall_v be_v of_o force_n with_o those_o universal_a gentleman_n who_o pretend_v that_o their_o religion_n be_v the_o catholic_n because_o they_o believe_v nothing_o but_o that_o wherein_o all_o agree_v forget_v that_o such_o a_o restraint_n of_o their_o belief_n be_v peculiar_a to_o themselves_o and_o not_o common_a whereas_o here_o be_v a_o agreement_n of_o all_o party_n at_o least_o such_o as_o have_v any_o esteem_n with_o they_o on_o which_o they_o may_v safe_o rely_v viz._n that_o salvation_n may_v be_v have_v in_o the_o roman_a catholic_a church_n which_o be_v all_o we_o do_v or_o at_o least_o ought_v to_o aim_v at_o by_o our_o religion_n as_o for_o those_o other_o point_n which_o perhaps_o they_o hold_v viz._n a_o deity_n a_o saviour_n and_o the_o like_a though_o they_o have_v the_o universal_a consent_n of_o all_o christian_n for_o their_o truth_n yet_o they_o have_v it_o not_o for_o their_o sufficiency_n to_o salvation_n especial_o so_o as_o to_o exclude_v the_o necessity_n of_o believe_v other_o article_n when_o they_o be_v due_o propose_v and_o it_o will_v be_v of_o small_a consequence_n to_o they_o that_o what_o they_o hold_v common_a with_o other_o prove_v true_a if_o their_o additional_a verbal_a translation_n of_o the_o scripture_n the_o protestant_n be_v not_o necessitate_v to_o have_v recourse_n to_o particular_a man_n the_o bible_n be_v translate_v to_o their_o hand_n and_o warrant_v by_o public_a authority_n though_o here_o too_o they_o will_v be_v at_o a_o loss_n unless_o it_o appear_v to_o they_o that_o they_o may_v confide_v in_o this_o authority_n but_o for_o the_o importance_n or_o rather_o that_o which_o be_v of_o any_o importance_n at_o all_o but_o in_o truth_n they_o be_v not_o particular_a priest_n which_o catholic_o depend_v on_o for_o either_o the_o translation_n or_o sense_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o any_o necessary_a point_n of_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v on_o their_o church_n who_o voice_n be_v as_o intelligible_a at_o least_o and_o with_o the_o doctor_n leave_n much_o far_a herd_n than_o that_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n for_o be_v it_o not_o full_a as_o evident_a in_o england_n and_o much_o more_o evident_a in_o other_o part_n of_o the_o world_n that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n teach_v a_o purgatory_n than_o it_o be_v that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n teach_v the_o contrary_a and_o so_o of_o other_o doctrine_n this_o be_v a_o age_n wherein_o man_n while_o they_o scepticize_v on_o evident_a truth_n be_v positive_a in_o absurdity_n and_o therefore_o there_o want_v not_o those_o who_o ask_v how_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n can_v know_v what_o their_o church_n hold_v but_o when_o they_o shall_v have_v consider_v how_o they_o themselves_o come_v to_o know_v what_o that_o church_n hold_v while_o so_o they_o do_v not_o they_o can_v pretend_v that_o they_o have_v any_o promise_n from_o god_n nor_o other_o security_n than_o what_o they_o receive_v from_o a_o bankrupt_a ensurer_n viz._n their_o own_o presumption_n and_o this_o certain_o deserve_v their_o most_o serious_a consideration_n member_n may_v fail_v without_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o body_n all_o to_o fail_v together_o the_o place_n of_o scripture_n allude_v to_o by_o the_o quaerist_n speak_v of_o one_o church_n whereas_o the_o doctor_n talk_v of_o several_a it_o be_v true_a that_o this_o one_o church_n to_o which_o so_o far_o as_o such_o fail_v in_o particular_a but_o not_o for_o all_o of_o they_o together_o and_o therefore_o if_o the_o doctor_n have_v prove_v either_o that_o his_o congregation_n be_v this_o whole_a infallible_a church_n here_o speak_v of_o or_o else_o show_v some_o such_o whole_a church_n whereof_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v a_o member_n he_o have_v do_v his_o business_n but_o whereas_o he_o do_v neither_o of_o these_o thing_n the_o query_n continue_v still_o without_o a_o answer_n but_o because_o what_o be_v defective_a in_o strength_n may_v be_v supply_v by_o number_n according_a to_o what_o i_o have_v say_v 64._o say_v pag._n 64._o above_o out_o come_v another_o cypher_n we_o have_v say_v the_o doctor_n a_o certain_a rule_n and_o sufficient_a mean_n i_o suppose_v cast_v up_o a_o sum_n be_v not_o what_o he_o say_v here_o also_o as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v that_o they_o be_v as_o infallible_a as_o a_o man_n that_o may_v be_v mistake_v which_o be_v never_o that_o i_o know_v of_o deny_v to_o the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o here_o i_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v though_o the_o expression_n as_o well_o as_o that_o which_o follow_v seem_v to_o be_v somewhat_o doubtful_a that_o the_o dr._n do_v not_o intend_v to_o say_v thus_o much_o viz._n that_o though_o indeed_o his_o church_n may_v be_v mistake_v in_o cast_v up_o its_o sum_n be_v it_o guilty_a of_o misattention_n yet_o now_o be_v assure_v that_o it_o be_v guilty_a of_o none_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o mistake_v i_o suppose_v i_o say_v he_o do_v not_o mean_v this_o for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o possibility_n of_o mistake_v in_o this_o computation_n but_o by_o misattention_n and_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v sure_a that_o it_o have_v no_o misattention_n when_o it_o compute_v it_o be_v sure_a likewise_o that_o it_o be_v infallible_a because_o it_o be_v sure_a by_o be_v without_o misattention_n that_o it_o be_v without_o a_o possibility_n of_o mistake_v which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o supposition_n of_o the_o query_n which_o be_v not_o deny_v by_o the_o doctor_n and_o to_o the_o fallibility_n which_o this_o church_n own_v of_o herself_o the_o like_a must_v be_v say_v of_o that_o which_o follow_v viz._n that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n can_v prove_v it_o have_v right_o compute_v for_o if_o a_o right_a computation_n be_v liable_a to_o no_o mistake_n and_o the_o church_n of_o england_n can_v prove_v that_o it_o have_v this_o right_a computation_n it_o prove_v at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o it_o be_v liable_a to_o no_o mistake_n and_o therefore_o infallible_a in_o a_o word_n if_o what_o the_o doctor_n say_v import_v that_o his_o
worse_a because_o it_o want_v his_o approbation_n i_o question_v not_o but_o he_o like_v the_o reformation_n as_o well_o for_o not_o send_v mission_n into_o china_n as_o for_o not_o endeavour_v to_o compliment_n on_o the_o whole_a london-clergy_n i_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o dr._n st.'s_n subtilty_n to_o make_v out_o for_o as_o my_o say_n that_o some_o lie_n be_v tell_v in_o coffeehouse_n do_v not_o reflect_v on_o all_o those_o who_o frequent_v they_o nay_o i_o be_v then_o actual_o endeavour_v to_o excuse_v the_o frequent_v they_o so_o neither_o can_v my_o intimate_v that_o the_o pulpit_n have_v be_v liable_a to_o some_o part_n of_o that_o misfortune_n concern_v all_o those_o who_o preach_v in_o they_o indeed_o my_o compliment_n as_o the_o doctor_n call_v it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v design_v by_o i_o to_o all_o the_o london-clergy_n that_o i_o direct_v it_o not_o to_o dr._n st._n himself_o any_o far_a than_o his_o own_o conscience_n shall_v look_v on_o it_o as_o belong_v all_o have_v it_o be_v true_a as_o it_o be_v not_o that_o i_o have_v reflect_v on_o this_o whole_a clergy_n what_o have_v that_o be_v in_o comparison_n of_o dr._n tenison_n if_o you_o be_v a_o papist_n etc._n etc._n which_o take_v in_o so_o many_o country_n and_o age_n and_o even_o his_o own_o sovereign_n these_o be_v two_o instance_n what_o use_v these_o gentleman_n can_v make_v of_o their_o infer_v faculty_n when_o they_o see_v it_o for_o their_o purpose_n be_v there_o any_o thing_n here_o half_o so_o plain_a or_o so_o natural_o deduce_v as_o that_o which_o i_o draw_v from_o dr._n tenison_n proposition_n nay_o rather_o be_v not_o the_o inference_n of_o these_o two_o doctor_n evident_o force_v whereas_o i_o be_v genuine_a and_o obvious_a even_o to_o the_o mean_a understanding_n and_o yet_o base_a and_o unworthy_a way_n of_o catch_a man_n be_v lay_v to_o my_o charge_n and_o these_o gentleman_n pass_v for_o plain-dealer_n but_o this_o will_v not_o always_o be_v so_o there_o be_v a_o time_n to_o come_v in_o which_o there_o will_v be_v nothing_o of_o what_o be_v now_o hide_a but_o what_o shall_v be_v reveal_v and_o then_o it_o will_v appear_v how_o ill_o a_o choice_n those_o have_v make_v who_o have_v prefer_v fame_n before_o truth_n and_o the_o save_n of_o their_o credit_n before_o the_o save_n of_o their_o soul_n the_o doctor_n say_v far_a that_o for_o his_o part_n he_o think_v his_o loyalty_n at_o this_o time_n to_o be_v more_o valuable_a than_o mr._n m._n be_v because_o he_o as_o a_o son_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n profess_v he_o will_v not_o rebel_v against_o the_o king_n notwithstanding_o he_o may_v be_v of_o another_o religion_n whereas_o mr._n m._n be_v of_o the_o same_o religion_n can_v not_o so_o well_o separate_a loyalty_n from_o interest_n now_o for_o my_o part_n though_o i_o hold_v work_n of_o supererogation_n yet_o i_o be_o far_o from_o think_v loyalty_n at_o least_o as_o it_o be_v here_o king._n here_o viz._n a_o not_o rebel_n against_o the_o king._n describe_v to_o be_v one_o of_o those_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v my_o opinion_n that_o we_o ought_v as_o little_o to_o value_v ourselves_o on_o our_o not_o be_v rebel_n as_o we_o will_v do_v on_o our_o not_o be_v thief_n or_o murderer_n nay_o rather_o less_o forasmuch_o as_o theft_n and_o murder_n be_v certain_o less_o criminal_a than_o rebellion_n and_o therefore_o a_o loyalty_n to_o be_v boast_v of_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o must_v be_v somewhat_o more_o than_o a_o ordinary_a obedience_n however_o if_o the_o doctor_n think_v his_o loyalty_n at_o this_o time_n more_o valuable_a than_o i_o because_o he_o demean_v himself_o peaceable_o under_o a_o prince_n of_o a_o different_a religion_n he_o ought_v to_o remember_v that_o for_o three_o year_n which_o he_o have_v live_v so_o it_o have_v fall_v to_o my_o share_n to_o pass_v over_o twelve_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n only_o with_o this_o difference_n that_o he_o enjoy_v entire_a privilege_n of_o a_o freeborn_a subject_n sit_v under_o a_o large_a figtree_n and_o gather_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o well-spread_a vine_n and_o be_v promise_v the_o continuance_n of_o they_o have_v no_o other_o he_o other_o unless_o perhaps_o a_o restraint_n from_o vex_v other_o and_o consequent_o the_o want_n of_o the_o old_a &_o more_o effectual_a method_n of_o silence_v jesuit_n be_v a_o inconvenience_n to_o he_o cause_n of_o disquiet_n save_v only_o what_o ought_v to_o prompt_v he_o to_o nothing_o but_o gratitude_n the_o bare_a contemplation_n that_o be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o
