well_o before_o the_o reformation_n as_o since_o express_v their_o just_a detestation_n of_o the_o pope_n pretension_n to_o it_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o stat._n of_o carlisle_n and_o by_o that_o of_o prouiso_n make_v 25._o edu._n iii_o and_o by_o many_o more_o in_o king_n henry_n viii_n reign_n who_o be_v both_o parliamentary_o and_o synodical_o invest_v with_o the_o supremacy_n in_o all_o canse_v spiritual_a as_o well_o as_o temporal_a not_o that_o he_o have_v power_n of_o mission_n or_o ordination_n but_o of_o permission_n and_o order_v man_n so_o send_v by_o the_o church_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n in_o his_o dominion_n which_o be_v legal_o and_o essential_o inherent_a in_o the_o crown_n before_o the_o king_n of_o england_n be_v supreme_a ordinary_n by_o the_o ancient_a common_a law_n of_o this_o land_n of_o which_o those_o statute_n be_v not_o introductory_n but_o declarative_n and_o the_o very_a first_o canon_n of_o our_o church_n do_v require_v that_o all_o ecclesiastical_a person_n preacher_n etc._n etc._n shall_v several_a time_n every_o year_n to_o the_o utmost_a of_o their_o wit_n knowledge_n and_o learning_n sincere_o without_o any_o colour_n or_o dissimulation_n teach_v in_o their_o sermon_n etc._n etc._n that_o no_o manner_n of_o obedience_n and_o subjection_n within_o his_o majesty_n realm_n and_o dominion_n be_v due_a to_o any_o usurp_v or_o foreign_a power_n but_o that_o the_o king_n power_n within_o his_o realm_n be_v the_o high_a under_o god_n to_o who_o all_o his_o subject_n do_v by_o god_n law_n owe_v most_o loyalty_n and_o obedience_n before_o and_o above_o all_o other_o power_n and_o potentate_n on_o earth_n now_o if_o a_o preacher_n whilst_o he_o be_v do_v the_o duty_n of_o this_o canon_n shall_v call_v the_o pope_n usurper_n for_o claim_v or_o exercise_v that_o jurisdiction_n here_o which_o belong_v not_o to_o he_o and_o shall_v be_v think_v for_o that_o reason_n not_o to_o bear_v respect_n enough_o to_o the_o king_n religion_n he_o will_v indeed_o but_o show_v so_o much_o the_o more_o respect_n to_o his_o royal_a person_n and_o regal_a just_a power_n as_o he_o be_v oblige_v to_o do_v by_o the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n and_o supremacy_n and_o can_v be_v censure_v only_o for_o his_o fidelity_n and_o loyalty_n to_o the_o king_n such_o as_o become_v a_o true_a son_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o in_o point_n wherein_o we_o be_v not_o determine_v by_o authority_n or_o other_o obligation_n but_o at_o perfect_a liberty_n to_o declare_v or_o not_o to_o declare_v our_o opinion_n in_o these_o we_o have_v the_o sair_a if_o not_o the_o only_a opportunity_n for_o the_o exercise_n of_o our_o christian_a prudence_n and_o therefore_o for_o a_o preacher_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n to_o affirm_v positive_o or_o go_v about_o to_o prove_v in_o a_o public_a auditory_a or_o assembly_n that_o st._n peter_n be_v never_o at_o rome_n or_o that_o the_o pope_n be_v antichrist_n or_o that_o no_o man_n in_o his_o right_a wit_n can_v turn_v papist_n must_v necessary_o under_o our_o circumstance_n be_v reckon_v imprudent_a if_o not_o impudent_a these_o and_o such_o like_a matter_n of_o private_a opinion_n which_o when_o publish_v be_v like_a to_o give_v offence_n to_o our_o superior_n and_o if_o forbear_v can_v give_v no_o scandal_n to_o any_o christian_n prudence_n will_v unquestionable_o direct_v such_o shall_v now_o be_v forbear_v out_o of_o respect_n to_o the_o king_n and_o the_o roman_n catholic_n religion_n because_o it_o be_v his_o the_o daily_a decay_n of_o solid_a and_o substantial_a piety_n be_v the_o most_o unhappy_a effect_n of_o christian_n foolish_o fight_v in_o a_o mist_n and_o scuffle_v in_o the_o dark_a among_o themselves_o against_o the_o interest_n of_o peace_n and_o charity_n and_o scramble_n so_o eager_o and_o so_o childish_o as_o they_o do_v for_o nut_n and_o cherry_n stone_n or_o thing_n fit_a to_o be_v put_v into_o the_o same_o bag_n with_o they_o as_o be_v of_o no_o value_n with_o man_n of_o judgement_n and_o therefore_o a_o prudent_a man_n will_v always_o take_v care_n to_o avoid_v as_o much_o as_o be_v possible_a unnecessary_a controversy_n and_o in_o handle_v such_o as_o he_o think_v necessary_a i_o know_v not_o how_o he_o can_v give_v better_a proof_n of_o his_o prudence_n as_o well_o as_o obedience_n than_o by_o observe_v his_o majesty_n direction_n to_o preacher_n which_o give_v a_o full_a resolution_n to_o the_o case_n in_o hand_n viz._n by_o do_v it_o with_o all_o modesty_n gravity_n and_o candour_n without_o bitterness_n rail_a jeer_a or_o other_o unnecessary_a and_o unseemly_a provocation_n and_o he_o who_o shall_v transgress_v these_o his_o royal_a and_o religious_a direction_n will_v those_o of_o the_o new_a testament_n too_o he_o that_o shsll_v use_v the_o liberty_n grant_v he_o by_o his_o majesty_n for_o a_o cloak_n of_o maliciousness_n and_o upon_o such_o occasion_n or_o indeed_o any_o other_o act_n the_o merry_a andrew_n in_o the_o pulpit_n deserve_v not_o only_o the_o fool_n coat_n but_o the_o rod_n too_o upon_o his_o back_n from_o whence_o i_o inser_n in_o the_o next_o place_n 3_o lie_n that_o those_o of_o our_o communion_n especial_o the_o clergy_n ought_v neither_o to_o rail_v nor_o rally_v upon_o the_o religion_n which_o the_o king_n own_v religion_n with_o a_o man_n of_o sense_n and_o affection_n be_v a_o tender_a point_n and_o the_o affront_v do_v it_o do_v as_o doy_o touch_v he_o and_o wound_v he_o more_o feel_o than_o any_o offer_v to_o his_o dear_a relation_n or_o to_o his_o own_o honour_n as_o a_o gentleman_n and_o howsoever_o the_o one_o part_n resent_v and_o the_o other_o take_v it_o it_o be_v a_o disease_a heat_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o not_o christian_a zeal_n to_o make_v any_o fort_n of_o religion_n the_o sport_n of_o our_o wit_n and_o the_o triumph_n of_o our_o drollery_n they_o who_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o may_v have_v espouse_v the_o fortune_n but_o
