from_o conformity_n heretofore_o conscience_n be_v now_o much_o more_o force_v and_o violate_v by_o they_o in_o the_o chair_n which_o be_v say_v to_o vindicate_v themselves_o for_o dissent_v so_o and_o canon_n ecclesiastical_a which_o be_v of_o force_n in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n to_o this_o day_n and_o it_o be_v sufficient_o know_v that_o by_o the_o 36_o canon_n every_o person_n to_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o party_n consent_v relate_v to_o his_o will_n and_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o thing_n consent_v to_o it_o relate_v to_o that_o goodness_n expediency_n behovefulness_n of_o it_o a_o very_a wise_a and_o grave_a observation_n as_o if_o i_o can_v not_o assent_v to_o the_o do_v of_o what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o truth_n of_o a_o proposition_n or_o can_v not_o assent_v to_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o a_o thing_n without_o assent_v to_o it_o as_o every_o way_n fit_a and_o best_a and_o most_o expedient_a as_o if_o i_o can_v not_o consent_v to_o behoveful_a to_o be_v do_v practise_v and_o observe_v as_o this_o author_n be_v please_v to_o paraphrase_n a_o unseigned_a consent_n but_o to_o satisfy_v this_o gentleman_n in_o the_o signification_n of_o these_o word_n assent_v and_o consent_n it_o may_v be_v convenient_a to_o give_v he_o qu._n elizabeth_n interpretation_n of_o they_o in_o the_o preface_n to_o the_o article_n an._n 1504_o whereupon_o by_o diligent_a conference_n and_o communication_n and_o at_o last_o collection_n bishop_n sparrow_n collection_n by_o assent_n and_o consent_v of_o the_o person_n before-said_a these_o of_o god_n and_o as_o of_o necessity_n to_o bind_v the_o conscience_n of_o her_o subject_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o they_o consider_v in_o themselves_o but_z as_o temporal_a order_n mere_a ecclesiastical_a without_o any_o vain_a superstition_n and_o as_o rule_n in_o some_o part_n of_o discipline_n concern_v decency_n distinction_n and_o order_n for_o the_o time_n so_o that_o the_o queen_n and_o the_o archbishop_n of_o canterbury_n and_o the_o other_o bishop_n in_o commission_n with_o he_o who_o draw_v up_o those_o article_n think_v we_o may_v give_v our_o assent_n and_o consent_n to_o order_n and_o rule_n and_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n to_o a_o book_n of_o common-prayer_n as_o only_o meet_v and_o convenient_a to_o be_v use_v and_o follow_v and_o that_o we_o may_v give_v such_o a_o assent_n and_o consent_n to_o temporary_a rule_n which_o be_v alterable_a at_o pleasure_n and_o therefore_o not_o suppose_v to_o be_v every_o way_n perfect_a or_o not_o to_o have_v the_o least_o error_n or_o defect_n in_o they_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o act_n of_o uniformity_n require_v our_o unfeigned_a assent_n and_o consent_n to_o the_o book_n of_o common-prayer_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v to_o the_o use_n of_o it_o as_o be_v express_o mention_v immediate_o before_o this_o declaration_n that_o every_o minister_n shall_v open_o and_o public_o before_o the_o congregation_n declare_v his_o unfeigned_a assent_n and_o consent_n to_o the_o use_n of_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o say_a book_n contain_v and_o prescribe_v in_o these_o word_n and_o no_o other_o i_o a._n b._n do_v here_o declare_v etc._n etc._n now_o when_o the_o act_n itself_o limit_n the_o signification_n of_o these_o word_n assent_n and_o consent_n only_o to_o the_o use_n it_o evident_o betray_v a_o perverse_a and_o malicious_a design_n to_o affix_v such_o a_o large_a signification_n on_o they_o without_o the_o least_o appearance_n of_o reason_n as_o to_o render_v that_o declaration_n very_o absurd_a and_o impious_a or_o at_o best_a very_o suspicious_a to_o honest_a man_n as_o for_o what_o he_o urge_v that_o the_o act_n itself_o expound_v consent_n by_o approve_v where_o it_o be_v say_v of_o a_o lecturer_n that_o he_o shall_v give_v his_o assent_n to_o and_o approbation_n of_o the_o say_a book_n and_o to_o the_o use_n of_o all_o the_o prayer_n etc._n etc._n i_o will_v fain_o know_v how_o it_o can_v be_v otherwise_o for_o he_o who_o assent_v and_o consent_n must_v approve_v as_o far_o as_o he_o assent_v and_o consent_n but_o why_o can_v we_o approve_v of_o the_o use_n of_o a_o book_n or_o approve_v of_o
palpable_o false_a for_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v express_o order_v her_o minister_n as_o be_v plain_a in_o the_o form_n of_o private_a baptism_n to_o baptize_v child_n without_o godfather_n and_o godmother_n or_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n where_o there_o be_v any_o apparent_a danger_n of_o death_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v be_v the_o parent_n fault_n how_o scrupulous_a soever_o he_o be_v not_o the_o minister_n if_o his_o child_n die_v unbaptise_v i_o know_v not_o what_o remark_n to_o make_v on_o this_o but_o shall_v leave_v it_o to_o himself_o and_o every_o impartial_a reader_n to_o think_v on_o it_o but_o yet_o i_o must_v far_o observe_v that_o to_o assert_v the_o salvation_n of_o baptize_v infant_n do_v not_o deny_v salvation_n to_o all_o that_o be_v unbaptise_v though_o we_o be_v not_o so_o certain_a from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o one_o as_o of_o the_o other_o the_o salvation_n of_o baptize_v infant_n depend_v on_o a_o express_a covenant_n but_o we_o have_v the_o goodness_n and_o clemency_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n as_o a_o reason_n to_o hope_v well_o of_o other_o especial_o of_o the_o child_n of_o christian_a parent_n who_o be_v bear_v within_o the_o pale_a of_o the_o church_n and_o be_v design_v by_o their_o parent_n to_o be_v make_v the_o visible_a member_n of_o it_o nor_o be_v the_o denial_n of_o christian_a burial_n to_o such_o infant_n as_o die_v unbaptise_v any_o argument_n as_o he_o suggest_v that_o our_o church_n doubt_v of_o their_o salvation_n but_o only_o that_o she_o do_v not_o own_v they_o as_o actual_a member_n of_o the_o church_n as_o no_o person_n be_v who_o be_v not_o actual_o admit_v into_o the_o christian_a church_n by_o baptism_n and_o possible_o this_o may_v be_v design_v as_o a_o act_n of_o discipline_n to_o correct_v the_o neglect_n of_o parent_n and_o to_o beget_v in_o they_o a_o great_a veneration_n for_o the_o christian_a sacrament_n his_o last_o objection_n be_v against_o the_o office_n for_o the_o burial_n of_o the_o dead_a in_o which_o we_o find_v these_o word_n for_o asmuch_o as_o it_o have_v please_v god_n of_o his_o great_a our_o church_n acknowledge_v to_o be_v a_o act_n of_o mercy_n in_o god_n through_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n who_o have_v the_o key_n of_o hell_n and_o death_n that_o die_a person_n do_v not_o forthwith_o go_v into_o the_o power_n of_o the_o devil_n who_o have_v the_o power_n of_o death_n heb._n 2._o 14._o but_o do_v immediate_o go_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o great_a god_n and_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v dispose_v of_o by_o he_o according_a to_o the_o promise_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel-covenant_n agreeable_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o ancient_a church_n which_o in_o the_o office_n of_o burial_n magnify_v the_o divine_a power_n whereby_o the_o unjust_a and_o tyrannous_a power_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v overcome_v and_o our_o lord_n receive_v we_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d to_o his_o peculiar_a and_o most_o righteous_a judgement_n but_o still_o he_o urge_v that_o other_o expression_n that_o we_o commit_v his_o body_n to_o the_o ground_n in_o sure_a and_o certain_a hope_n of_o the_o resurrection_n to_o eternal_a life_n which_o word_n he_o tell_v we_o must_v necessary_o be_v speak_v with_o reference_n to_o the_o person_n then_o inter_v inasmuch_o as_o they_o be_v the_o continuation_n of_o the_o forego_n declaration_n viz._n god_n take_v his_o soul_n to_o himself_o commit_v his_o body_n to_o the_o ground_n must_v indeed_o necessary_o refer_v to_o the_o person_n inter_v but_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n every_o thing_n that_o follow_v shall_v for_o it_o be_v not_o he_o but_o the_o resurrection_n to_o life_n we_o declare_v our_o hope_n of_o our_o church_n think_v it_o fit_a on_o such_o a_o sad_a occasion_n as_o this_o to_o declare_v their_o hope_n of_o a_o future_a resurrection_n and_o since_o god_n take_v his_o soul_n to_o himself_o do_v not_o necessary_o infer_v the_o salvation_n of_o such_o a_o person_n as_o i_o have_v already_o show_v we_o can_v thence_o infer_v that_o the_o resurrection_n to_o life_n refer_v to_o the_o inter_a person_n neither_o but_o he_o have_v find_v one_o passage_n which_o he_o say_v put_v it_o out_o of_o all_o doubt_n that_o when_o we_o bury_v a_o know_a adulterer_n fornicator_n drunkard_n we_o declare_v and_o avouch_v that_o his_o soul_n be_v assure_o go_v to_o heaven_n viz._n that_o in_o the_o prayer_n after_o burial_n that_o when_o we_o shall_v depart_v this_o life_n we_o may_v rest_v in_o he_o viz._n in_o christ_n as_o our_o hope_n be_v this_o our_o brother_n do_v this_o i_o grant_v refer_v to_o the_o inter_a person_n but_o be_v no_o argument_n that_o the_o former_a expression_n do_v for_o this_o be_v only_o a_o judgement_n of_o charity_n which_o differ_v much_o from_o a_o sure_a and_o certain_a hope_n there_o be_v various_a degree_n of_o hope_n and_o some_o of_o they_o so_o little_a that_o we_o can_v hardly_o deny_v they_o to_o any_o person_n though_o never_o so_o wicked_a for_o where_o we_o be_v not_o absolute_o sure_a that_o they_o die_v whole_o impenitent_a we_o have_v some_o degree_n of_o hope_n and_o though_o we_o have_v reason_n to_o fear_v this_o of_o too_o too_o many_o yet_o we_o be_v seldom_o so_o certain_a of_o it_o as_o to_o exclude_v all_o hope_n of_o the_o contrary_n but_o as_o a_o full_a justification_n of_o our_o church_n in_o this_o matter_n we_o may_v consider_v that_o this_o office_n of_o burial_n suppose_v that_o the_o person_n inter_v die_v in_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n and_o be_v church-censure_n due_o administer_v as_o this_o office_n presume_v they_o to_o be_v and_o as_o certain_o they_o will_v be_v be_v not_o the_o church_n weaken_v by_o powerful_a schism_n and_o faction_n no_o man_n can_v die_v in_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n but_o such_o as_o we_o shall_v have_v very_o good_a reason_n in_o the_o judgement_n of_o charity_n to_o hope_v well_o of_o and_o since_o through_o the_o decay_n of_o discipline_n many_o die_n in_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n who_o deserve_v excommunication_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o whoever_o shall_v leave_v out_o that_o sentence_n as_o our_o hope_n be_v this_o our_o brother_n do_v at_o the_o burial_n of_o some_o notorious_a profligate_v sinner_n comply_v with_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o church_n and_o may_v justify_v himself_o to_o his_o superior_n for_o do_v so_o have_v thus_o examine_v and_o as_o i_o think_v answer_v this_o minister_n objection_n against_o conformity_n i_o must_v now_o look_v back_o and_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o only_a piece_n of_o ingenuity_n he_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o throughout_o this_o pamphlet_n and_o that_o be_v where_o he_o own_v the_o lawful_a use_n of_o a_o establish_a liturgy_n or_o prescribe_v form_n of_o public_a prayer_n nay_o that_o as_o he_o say_v nothing_o against_o a_o liturgy_n or_o prescribe_v form_n of_o public_a prayer_n in_o the_o general_n so_o neither_o against_o the_o main_a doctrine_n contain_v in_o the_o prayer_n of_o this_o book_n of_o common-prayer_n in_o particular_a and_o in_o requital_n of_o this_o i_o shall_v as_o ready_o acknowledge_v what_o he_o add_v that_o it_o be_v quite_o another_o thing_n to_o be_v bind_v up_o to_o declare_v my_o unfeigned_a assent_n and_o consent_n to_o all_o and_o every_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o book_n but_o he_o ought_v also_o to_o have_v add_v and_o prescribe_v by_o the_o book_n together_o with_o those_o prayer_n that_o be_v that_o there_o be_v a_o real_a difference_n between_o that_o conformity_n which_o be_v require_v of_o a_o clergyman_n and_o that_o which_o be_v require_v of_o a_o layman_n
baptize_v again_o the_o sum_n then_o of_o his_o argument_n be_v this_o that_o he_o dare_v not_o approve_v the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n because_o the_o use_n of_o it_o after_o baptism_n may_v by_o a_o perverse_a interpretation_n seem_v to_o be_v what_o it_o be_v not_o and_o what_o he_o dare_v not_o affirm_v it_o to_o be_v it_o be_v some_o comfort_n that_o this_o writer_n acknowledge_v in_o the_o next_o paragraph_n that_o the_o primitive_a christian_n do_v use_v the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n as_o indeed_o they_o do_v both_o in_o administer_a baptism_n and_o upon_o divers_a other_o occasion_n which_o one_o will_v think_v may_v justify_v the_o church_n of_o england_n in_o conform_v to_o a_o primitive_a practice_n but_o what_o he_o add_v that_o they_o do_v it_o to_o distinguish_v themselves_o from_o the_o pagan_n who_o scorn_v the_o cross_n together_o with_o every_o sign_n and_o token_n of_o it_o be_v never_o allege_v as_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o practice_n by_o the_o ancient_a christian_n who_o do_v not_o use_v this_o sign_n to_o distinguish_v themselves_o from_o jew_n and_o pagan_n though_o every_o peculiar_a usage_n for_o what_o reason_n soever_o it_o be_v take_v up_o will_v necessary_o prove_v a_o note_n of_o distinction_n but_o to_o declare_v that_o as_o much_o as_o a_o crucify_a christ_n be_v scorn_v both_o by_o jew_n and_o heathen_n they_o be_v not_o ashamed_a of_o the_o cross_n but_o do_v put_v their_o whole_a trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o their_o crucify_a lord_n and_o be_v ready_a when_o ever_o god_n please_v to_o call_v they_o to_o it_o to_o be_v conform_v to_o their_o suffer_a head_n and_o this_o be_v a_o perpetual_a reason_n for_o this_o use_n while_o the_o church_n have_v any_o enemy_n and_o it_o be_v never_o like_a to_o be_v without_o while_o there_o be_v either_o atheist_n or_o fanatic_n or_o papist_n that_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n have_v be_v abuse_v by_o papist_n to_o idolatrous_a purpose_n be_v no_o better_a argument_n against_o use_v the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n than_o it_o be_v against_o own_v the_o cross_n itself_o for_o in_o use_v the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n we_o only_o own_o the_o cross_n that_o be_v we_o profess_v to_o own_o a_o crucify_a lord_n and_o the_o doctrine_n and_o religion_n of_o the_o cross_n but_o this_o person_n be_v much_o mistake_v in_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n which_o neither_o do_v any_o thing_n nor_o leave_v any_o thing_n undo_v mere_o for_o a_o note_n of_o distinction_n and_o separation_n that_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o vanity_n and_o affectation_n which_o be_v peculiar_a to_o pharisee_n and_o some_o other_o people_n who_o be_v very_o like_o they_o he_o have_v one_o objection_n more_o against_o the_o order_n of_o baptism_n which_o refer_v to_o the_o rubric_n at_o the_o end_n of_o that_o office_n viz._n it_o be_v certain_a by_o god_n word_n that_o child_n which_o be_v baptize_v die_v before_o they_o commit_v actual_a sin_n be_v undoubted_o save_v now_o have_v i_o a_o mind_n to_o wave_v this_o dispute_n i_o may_v tell_v he_o that_o we_o do_v not_o give_v our_o assent_n and_o consent_n to_o this_o rubric_n because_o though_o it_o be_v contain_v in_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o prescribe_v by_o the_o book_n of_o common_a prayer_n that_o be_v it_o be_v never_o to_o be_v use_v and_o we_o assent_v and_o consent_v only_o to_o the_o use_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v both_o contain_v in_o and_o prescribe_v by_o that_o book_n but_o since_o this_o be_v evident_o the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o church_n as_o appear_v both_o from_o the_o homily_n and_o several_a passage_n in_o the_o office_n of_o baptism_n itself_o i_o shall_v brief_o consider_v his_o objection_n against_o it_o and_o first_o he_o wish_v they_o have_v quote_v the_o place_n where_o this_o be_v affirm_v in_o scripture_n for_o he_o know_v not_o where_o to_o find_v it_o and_o i_o will_v desire_v he_o to_o tell_v i_o whether_o nothing_o be_v undoubted_o certain_a by_o scripture_n but_o what_o we_o have_v a_o express_a text_n for_o if_o not_o we_o must_v reject_v the_o baptism_n of_o infant_n too_o which_o will_v put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o dispute_n concern_v their_o salvation_n when_o baptize_v if_o those_o who_o be_v regular_o admit_v into_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n have_v a_o right_n to_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n than_o they_o have_v a_o title_n to_o salvation_n if_o they_o have_v not_o than_o baptism_n be_v a_o insignificant_a ceremony_n and_o not_o the_o seal_n of_o a_o covenant_n which_o i_o suppose_v our_o author_n will_v not_o easy_o affirm_v no_o not_o to_o oppose_v the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o say_v those_o who_o be_v regular_o admit_v by_o baptism_n for_o so_o our_o church_n suppose_v which_o answer_v most_o of_o his_o captious_a and_o impertinent_a query_n if_o the_o child_n of_o very_a bad_a parent_n be_v regular_o admit_v by_o baptism_n or_o to_o speak_v plain_a may_v be_v lawful_o baptize_v as_o in_o some_o case_n no_o doubt_n they_o may_v we_o must_v acknowledge_v they_o receive_v the_o benefit_n of_o baptism_n too_o but_o if_o any_o be_v baptize_v who_o have_v no_o right_n to_o baptism_n we_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o prove_v that_o baptism_n shall_v be_v of_o any_o advantage_n to_o they_o no_o more_o than_o that_o a_o child_n shall_v inherit_v a_o estate_n by_o virtue_n of_o a_o illegal_a or_o fraudulent_a conveyance_n thus_o the_o supposition_n of_o a_o christian_a king_n baptise_v the_o child_n of_o pagan_n turk_n jew_n by_o the_o same_o force_n by_o which_o he_o conquer_v their_o parent_n concern_v more_o the_o legality_n of_o the_o act_n than_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o sacrament_n for_o wherever_o the_o sacrament_n be_v lawful_o administer_v it_o will_v have_v its_o due_a effect_n it_o be_v a_o very_a pretty_a objection_n against_o the_o virtue_n of_o baptism_n that_o it_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o a_o man_n to_o make_v infant_n sure_a and_o certain_a of_o salvation_n viz._n by_o murder_v of_o they_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v baptize_v and_o according_o he_o teach_v whore_n a_o more_o charitable_a way_n of_o murder_v their_o infant_n to_o baptize_v they_o first_o that_o so_o their_o soul_n may_v be_v save_v which_o be_v true_a fanatic_a talk_n and_o prove_v the_o objector_n to_o have_v more_o need_n of_o good_a physic_n than_o a_o serious_a answer_n for_o let_v he_o put_v the_o case_n as_o odd_o as_o he_o please_v child_n that_o be_v lawful_o baptize_v be_v in_o covenant_n with_o god_n and_o have_v a_o good_a title_n to_o salvation_n and_o those_o who_o murder_v they_o send_v they_o to_o heaven_n as_o other_o murderer_n do_v all_o the_o good_a man_n they_o kill_v he_o ask_v just_a such_o another_o rave_a question_n may_v a_o minister_n since_o baptise_v give_v such_o a_o unquestionable_a title_n to_o heaven_n deny_v or_o suspend_v the_o ordinance_n to_o any_o infant_n whatsoever_o if_o he_o may_v be_v permit_v to_o administer_v it_o if_o by_o permission_n he_o mean_v a_o legal_a permission_n according_a to_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o answer_n be_v plain_a that_o he_o ought_v not_o to_o deny_v it_o that_o be_v a_o gospel_n minister_n ought_v not_o to_o deny_v baptism_n to_o any_o infant_n who_o have_v a_o just_a right_a to_o it_o if_o he_o mean_v any_o other_o permission_n than_o this_o the_o man_n be_v mad_a and_o needs_o no_o other_o answer_n for_o we_o do_v suppose_v that_o baptism_n work_v like_o a_o spell_n or_o charm_v to_o whosoever_o it_o be_v apply_v but_o its_o virtue_n depend_v upon_o a_o divine_a institution_n and_o therefore_o require_v person_n due_o qualify_v to_o receive_v it_o but_o he_o strange_o aggravate_v the_o cruelty_n of_o those_o minister_n who_o refuse_v to_o baptize_v child_n and_o consequent_o keep_v they_o under_o a_o suspicion_n of_o damnation_n because_o their_o parent_n scruple_n godfather_n and_o godmother_n and_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n such_o a_o one_o he_o say_v deserve_v if_o possible_a to_o be_v unchristened_a himself_o again_o and_o turn_v among_o cannibal_n as_o one_o more_o deep_o dip_v and_o baptize_v in_o their_o barbarous_a inhumanities_n and_o add_v and_o yet_o if_o he_o be_v a_o true_a son_n of_o the_o church_n and_o punctual_o observe_v his_o prescribe_a rule_n he_o must_v not_o baptize_v any_o infant_n without_o god_n father_n and_o godmother_n without_o sign_v it_o with_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n whether_o it_o be_v save_v or_o damn_v ought_v not_o this_o man_n of_o conscience_n nay_o of_o a_o tender_a conscience_n to_o have_v be_v very_o sure_a this_o charge_n have_v be_v just_a before_o he_o have_v condemn_v the_o whole_a clergy_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n to_o be_v turn_v among_o cannibal_n and_o yet_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o
