them so wonderfull for length and bredth and also the same was builded vpon arched vaults of stone for defence against fire which was a manner of worke till then vnknowne to the people of this nation brought in by the French and the stone from Cane in Normandie This Mauricius deceased in the yeere 1107. Richard Beauvais not Beamor as Stow saith succeeding him in the Bishopricke who did wonderfully increase the said Church purchasing at his owne cost all the streetes and lanes about it wherein before did dwell many lay people for religious men to dwell in and for their benefit c. The tower or steple of this Church was finished ann 1222. The new worke of Paules so called at the East end aboue the Quier was finished ann 1251. Henry Lacy Earle of Lincolne Custos of England c. and Ralfe Balduck Bishop of London were great benefactors vnto this Church about the yeere 1310. Anno 1444. the steeple was the second time fired by lightning and by great labour the same was in short time to appearance quenched with vineger but within a few houres the fire burst forth againe and did much hurt to the timber and leaden worke but in the yeere 1462. it was repaired and amended Anno 1561. this steeple was againe set on fire by lightning from heauen and it burned with such vehemencie that within a short space all the spire of the steeple with all the roofes of the Church both leaden-worke and timber-worke were consumed to the great sorrow and perpetuall remembrance of the beholders diuers whereof are yet liuing After this great misfortune Queene Elizabeth of blessed memory directed letters to the Lord Major for the speedy repayring of the same and She of her owne gratious disposition and bounty did giue presently in gold 1000. markes and a warrant for a 1000. loads of timber to be taken out of her woods to further the reparation thereof c. To omit what might bee said concerning the height of the steeple the length and bredth of the Church as things impertinent this Church hath for Gouernours a Bishop a Deane a Precentor a Chauncellor a Treasurer and 5. Archdeacons to wit of London Middlesex Essex Colchester and S. Albans it hath Prebendaries 30. and to furnish the Quire in diuine seruice Pety-canons 12. Vicars chorall 6. Queristers 10. c. At the entrance of the North side or I le of the Quire or Chancell 1 First lieth Sebba King of the East-Saxons in a coffin of grey marble with this inscription hanging by HIC jacet Sebba Rex Orientalium Saxonum qui conversus fuit ad fidem per S. Erkenwaldum Londinens Episcopum anno Christi 677.
