ever_o can_v prove_v any_o of_o these_o thing_n against_o we_o and_o here_o now_o be_v a_o fit_a opportunity_n to_o examine_v the_o particular_n of_o their_o charge_n and_o the_o validity_n of_o they_o but_o before_o i_o do_v that_o it_o will_v be_v requisite_a to_o make_v good_a our_o own_o ground_n and_o by_o give_v you_o some_o account_n of_o these_o proposition_n that_o either_o be_v or_o will_v be_v deny_v to_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o they_o be_v not_o the_o issue_n of_o a_o rash_a and_o inconsiderate_a zeal_n but_o the_o offspring_n of_o deliberate_a and_o well_o digest_v thought_n and_o though_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n and_o rule_n of_o disputation_n to_o put_v one_o upon_o prove_v a_o negative_a and_o therefore_o i_o need_v not_o do_v it_o yet_o for_o once_o and_o to_o gratify_v our_o adversary_n i_o will_v endeavour_v to_o do_v a_o work_n of_o supererogation_n to_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o none_o of_o all_o these_o thing_n have_v be_v by_o our_o adversary_n prove_v against_o the_o church_n of_o england_n though_o it_o will_v be_v no_o very_o difficult_a yet_o will_v it_o be_v a_o very_a tedious_a business_n for_o to_o do_v it_o effectual_o i_o shall_v be_v oblige_v to_o examine_v not_o only_o all_o the_o particular_n of_o their_o charge_n but_o also_o the_o strength_n or_o weakness_n of_o every_o argument_n which_o they_o have_v at_o any_o time_n bring_v to_o make_v it_o good_a which_o will_v take_v up_o so_o much_o time_n and_o paper_n as_o the_o design_a brevity_n of_o this_o small_a treatise_n can_v allow_v i_o shall_v therefore_o wave_v this_o and_o instead_o thereof_o take_v a_o more_o short_a and_o compendious_a but_o every_o way_n as_o effectual_a a_o course_n it_o be_v acknowledge_v by_o all_o that_o when_o a_o adversary_n be_v press_v with_o a_o absurdity_n which_o he_o can_v escape_v the_o argument_n be_v conclusive_a against_o he_o if_o therefore_o i_o can_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n impossible_a for_o our_o adversary_n according_a to_o their_o own_o notion_n of_o heresy_n to_o make_v good_a their_o charge_n against_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o may_v safe_o conclude_v that_o they_o have_v never_o do_v it_o because_o they_o can_v not_o do_v that_o which_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v do_v a_o thing_n be_v then_o say_v to_o be_v impossible_a either_o when_o it_o be_v simple_o and_o absolute_o so_o in_o itself_o or_o when_o it_o be_v so_o only_o upon_o supposition_n it_o be_v then_o say_v to_o be_v simple_o and_o absolute_o impossible_a when_o it_o imply_v a_o contradiction_n or_o be_v altogether_o repugnant_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n as_o for_o instance_n that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o body_n may_v be_v in_o more_o place_n than_o one_o at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n be_v a_o proposition_n so_o repugnant_a and_o contradictious_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o body_n that_o he_o must_v be_v wilful_o blind_a who_o do_v not_o see_v a_o impossibility_n therein_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v also_o say_v to_o be_v impossible_a upon_o supposition_n of_o a_o incapacity_n or_o insufficiency_n either_o in_o the_o active_a or_o passive_a power_n in_o the_o efficient_a or_o matter_n that_o be_v to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o though_o the_o thing_n be_v possible_a in_o itself_o yet_o if_o the_o agent_n be_v not_o of_o sufficient_a power_n to_o produce_v the_o effect_n design_v it_o be_v impossible_a upon_o that_o account_n as_o for_o instance_n if_o ten_o unarmed_a man_n shall_v undertake_v to_o beat_v ten_o thousand_o well_o appoint_v and_o well_o discipline_v soldier_n in_o open_a field_n it_o be_v possible_a indeed_o that_o those_o ten_o thousand_o may_v be_v beat_v but_o not_o by_o those_o ten_o because_o they_o have_v not_o power_n sufficient_a to_o do_v it_o again_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v impossible_a upon_o supposition_n of_o a_o incapacity_n in_o the_o passive_a power_n or_o matter_n that_o be_v to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o for_o if_o the_o subject_a matter_n be_v whole_o incapable_a of_o receive_v such_o a_o impression_n as_o the_o agent_n will_v stamp_v upon_o it_o though_o there_o may_v be_v no_o defect_n in_o the_o active_a power_n yet_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o passive_a there_o be_v a_o impossibility_n let_v we_o now_o apply_v this_o to_o the_o case_n in_o hand_n the_o church_n of_o rome_n charge_v the_o church_n of_o england_n with_o the_o guilt_n of_o heresy_n and_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o they_o can_v make_v good_a this_o charge_n against_o she_o i_o do_v not_o question_v the_o power_n of_o our_o adversary_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n if_o it_o be_v to_o be_v do_v but_o if_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v then_o notwithstanding_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o their_o power_n there_o be_v a_o incapacity_n in_o the_o subject_n they_o be_v to_o work_v upon_o which_o render_v their_o attempt_n impossible_a if_o therefore_o i_o do_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o prove_v this_o against_o we_o it_o will_v be_v a_o fair_a justification_n of_o the_o minor_a proposition_n in_o all_o the_o forego_n argument_n and_o prove_v thereby_o this_o be_v that_o faith_n and_o common_a christianity_n which_o we_o receive_v from_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n and_o
substance_n now_o that_o it_o be_v before_o the_o reformation_n than_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o by_o our_o reformation_n we_o make_v no_o separation_n from_o the_o church_n we_o only_o lay_v aside_o the_o corruption_n i._n e._n those_o unsound_a and_o unwholesome_a addition_n which_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v make_v to_o the_o ancient_a structure_n of_o christ_n religion_n and_o when_o those_o be_v remove_v the_o church_n which_o be_v by_o they_o obscure_v appear_v again_o in_o her_o primitive_a lustre_n and_o beauty_n now_o if_o the_o church_n be_v the_o same_o still_o it_o will_v necessary_o follow_v that_o we_o who_o be_v of_o that_o church_n do_v now_o hold_v the_o same_o communion_n in_o all_o the_o substantial_o and_o essential_o of_o religion_n with_o all_o other_o christian_a church_n that_o we_o do_v before_o for_o as_o to_o all_o the_o essential_o of_o a_o church_n we_o hold_v the_o same_o faith_n the_o same_o worship_n and_o the_o same_o government_n now_o that_o we_o do_v before_o the_o reformation_n and_o which_o now_o be_v and_o always_o have_v be_v own_v by_o the_o catholic_n church_n in_o all_o age_n and_o if_o so_o then_o can_v we_o not_o possible_o be_v guilty_a of_o any_o schismatical_a separation_n 2._o schism_n be_v a_o separation_n from_o a_o christian_a church_n i._n e._n from_o such_o a_o society_n between_o which_o be_v we_o there_o be_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v a_o religious_a union_n and_o conjunction_n that_o we_o can_v upon_o that_o score_n be_v just_o charge_v with_o any_o schismatical_a separation_n either_o from_o the_o catholic_n or_o any_o particular_a christian_a church_n i_o hope_v be_v sufficient_o make_v out_o in_o the_o four_o sect._n of_o this_o discourse_n to_o which_o i_o refer_v the_o reader_n be_v unwilling_a either_o to_o give_v he_o or_o myself_o a_o unnecessary_a trouble_n 3._o schism_n be_v a_o separation_n from_o the_o communion_n of_o a_o christian_a church_n in_o faith_n worship_n and_o government_n consider_v as_o bond_n of_o communion_n and_o here_o we_o be_v roundly_o charge_v by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n with_o a_o schismatical_a separation_n from_o she_o and_o a_o manifest_a schismatical_a separation_n from_o the_o catholic_n or_o any_o other_o christian_a church_n in_o her_o reformation_n and_o clear_v her_o innocency_n as_o to_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o of_o these_o great_a bond_n of_o communion_n in_o the_o 5_o 6_o seven_o and_o 8_o section_n i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o say_v any_o more_o of_o it_o here_o there_o be_v only_o one_o thing_n which_o as_o yet_o i_o have_v take_v no_o notice_n of_o and_o with_o which_o they_o often_o twit_v we_o viz._n the_o derivation_n of_o our_o order_n from_o they_o mr._n harding_n in_o his_o answer_n to_o bishop_n jewel_n apology_n do_v mighty_o triumph_v in_o this_o tell_v we_o that_o a_o church_n can_v subsist_v without_o lawful_a pastor_n and_o governor_n that_o there_o can_v be_v none_o such_o without_o lawful_a ordination_n by_o imposition_n of_o hand_n that_o we_o neither_o have_v nor_o ever_o have_v any_o such_o but_o from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n that_o those_o who_o receive_v that_o power_n from_o she_o become_v schismatic_n and_o heretic_n by_o their_o separation_n from_o she_o forfeit_v that_o power_n and_o can_v not_o convey_v it_o to_o other_o that_o therefore_o we_o have_v now_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o lawful_a priest_n and_o bishop_n among_o we_o without_o which_o we_o can_v be_v a_o church_n that_o herein_o we_o have_v break_v the_o great_a bond_n of_o communion_n viz._n government_n by_o depart_v from_o that_o church_n from_o which_o we_o have_v its_o be_v and_o therefore_o can_v be_v excuse_v from_o the_o sin_n of_o schism_n to_o this_o b._n jewel_n have_v give_v a_o long_a learned_a and_o full_a answer_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v refer_v the_o reader_n he_o may_v find_v it_o in_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o apology_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n chap._n 5._o division_n 1._o but_o to_o show_v you_o in_o how_o empty_a and_o insignificant_a a_o show_n this_o mighty_a triumph_n end_n i_o shall_v here_o offer_v some_o few_o thing_n to_o consideration_n 1._o that_o the_o confer_v of_o order_n give_v no_o power_n or_o jurisdiction_n to_o he_o or_o they_o by_o who_o they_o be_v confer_v over_o he_o or_o they_o on_o who_o they_o be_v confer_v for_o do_v we_o not_o know_v that_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n be_v always_o consecrate_v by_o the_o bishop_n of_o hostia_fw-la and_o yet_o i_o hope_v they_o will_v not_o say_v that_o the_o bishop_n of_o hostia_fw-la be_v therefore_o above_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n 2._o let_v it_o be_v grant_v that_o we_o derive_v our_o order_n from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n not_o as_o from_o the_o fountain_n or_o original_a of_o order_n but_o as_o from_o the_o conduct_n or_o mean_n of_o conveyance_n i_o will_v ask_v this_o question_n do_v they_o believe_v their_o order_n to_o be_v and_o pastor_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v true_a and_o rightful_a successor_n to_o those_o that_o have_v be_v before_o they_o be_v elect_v consecrate_a confirm_v and_o admit_v in_o as_o a_o effectual_a a_o manner_n as_o they_o be_v if_o their_o predecessor_n be_v deceive_v in_o any_o thing_n they_o succeed_v they_o in_o place_n but_o not_o in_o error_n for_o though_o they_o be_v indeed_o their_o predecessor_n in_o office_n yet_o be_v they_o not_o the_o ruler_n and_o standard_n of_o their_o faith._n and_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o a_o succession_n in_o faith_n and_o doctrine_n be_v far_o more_o considerable_a than_o a_o succession_n of_o person_n and_o that_o god_n be_v thank_v we_o be_v able_a to_o make_v good_a from_o the_o pure_a and_o uncorrupted_a fountain_n in_o doctrine_n therefore_o we_o succeed_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n as_o the_o day_n succee_v the_o night_n as_o the_o light_n succee_v darkness_n and_o as_o truth_n succee_v error_n 4._o that_o those_o bishop_n and_o pastor_n who_o have_v once_o be_v due_o elect_v consecrate_a confirm_v and_o admit_v in_o and_o to_o those_o sacred_a function_n do_v not_o by_o depart_v from_o the_o error_n and_o superstition_n of_o any_o other_o church_n though_o it_o be_v that_o from_o which_o they_o receive_v their_o order_n lose_v the_o power_n that_o be_v thereby_o commit_v to_o they_o but_o be_v still_o in_o a_o capacity_n to_o convey_v the_o same_o unto_o other_o 5._o that_o the_o bishop_n and_o pastor_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v legal_o possess_v of_o have_v due_o exert_v and_o constant_o and_o regular_o exercise_v this_o power_n the_o order_n confer_v by_o they_o by_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v to_o all_o intent_n and_o purpose_n good_a and_o valid_a and_o consequent_o in_o all_o the_o substantial_a and_o essential_a part_n thereof_o the_o guilt_n of_o that_o horrid_a schism_n which_o have_v so_o much_o bruise_v and_o wound_v rend_v and_o tear_v the_o church_n of_o substantial_o and_o essential_o not_o as_o it_o be_v clothe_v with_o particular_a modes_n rite_n and_o ceremony_n otherwise_o it_o can_v be_v no_o bond_n of_o communion_n the_o substantial_a and_o essential_a part_n of_o public_a worship_n i_o take_v to_o be_v these_o viz._n prayer_n read_v the_o holy_a canon_n interpret_n the_o same_o and_o the_o administration_n of_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n now_o these_o in_o divers_a church_n may_v be_v perform_v in_o different_a manner_n and_o with_o different_a rite_n and_o ceremony_n and_o yet_o those_o church_n notwithstanding_o this_o may_v still_o hold_v communion_n with_o the_o catholic_n church_n and_o consequent_o be_v guilty_a of_o no_o schismatical_a separation_n therefrom_o nor_o from_o one_o another_o but_o if_o we_o by_o worship_n understand_v the_o establish_v public_a worship_n of_o a_o particular_a church_n then_o be_v we_o to_o consider_v it_o not_o as_o abstract_v from_o but_o clothe_v with_o such_o modes_n rite_n and_o ceremony_n as_o be_v think_v convenient_a by_o that_o church_n and_o if_o any_o one_o who_o be_v a_o member_n of_o such_o a_o church_n shall_v upon_o any_o pretend_a offence_n take_v against_o any_o such_o modes_n rite_n and_o ceremony_n separate_v himself_o from_o the_o public_a worship_n i_o do_v not_o see_v how_o he_o can_v be_v acquit_v from_o the_o guilt_n of_o schism_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o case_n not_o only_o of_o the_o protestant_a dissenter_n from_o the_o church_n of_o england_n as_o they_o call_v themselves_o but_o of_o english_a roman_a catholic_n too_o for_o
