were six cubits on this are and six cubits on that side 13 He measured then the gate from the roof of one little chamber to the roof of another the breadth was five and twenty cubits door against door XI 2 The sock and quality of Mardocheus 6 He dreameth of two dragons coming forth to fight 10 and of a little fountain which became a great water IN the fourth year of the reign of Ptolomeus and Cleopatra Dositheus who said he was a priest and Levite and Ptolomeus his son brought this epistle of Phurim which they said was the same and that Lysimachus the son of Ptolomeus that was in Jerusalem had interpreted it 2 In the second year of the reign of Anaxerxes the great in the first day of the moneth Nisan Mardocheus the son of Jairus the son of Semei the son of Cisai of the tribe of Benjamin had a dream 3 Who was a Jew and dwelt in the city of Sula a great man being a servitour in the kings court 4 He was also one of the captives which Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon carried from Jerusalem with Jechonias king of Judea and this was his dream 5 Behold a noise of a tumult with thunder and earthquakes and uproar in the land 6 And behold two great dragons came forth ready to fight and their cry was great 7 And at their cry all nations were prepared to hattel that they might fight against the righteous people 8 And so a day of darkness and obscurity tribulation and anguish affliction and great uproar upon the earth 9 And the whole righteous nation was troubled fearing their own evils and were ready to perish 10 Then they cried unto God and upon their cry as it were from a little fountain was made a great floud even much water 11 The light and the sun rose up and the lowly were exalted and devoured the glorious 12 Now when Mardocheus who had seen this dream and what God had determined to do was awake he bare this dream in minde and until night by all means was desirous to know it CHAP. XII 2 The conspiracy of the two eunuchs is discovered by Mardocheus 5 for which he is entertained by the king and rewarded ANd Mardocheus took his rest in the court with Gabatha and Tharra the two eunuchs of the king and keepers of the palace 2 * Esth 2. â—1 6.2 And he heard their devices and searched out their purposes and learned that they were about to lay hands upon Artaxerxes the king and so he certified the king of them 3 Then the king examined the two eunuchs and after that they had confessed it they were strangled 4 And the king made a record of these things and Mardocheus also wrote thereof 5 So the king commanded Mardocheus to serve in the court and for this he rewarded him 6 Howbeit Aman the son of Amadathus the Agagite who was in great honour with the king sought to molest Mardocheus and his people because of the two eunuchs of the king CHAP. XIII 1 The copy of the kings letters to destroy the Jews 8 The prayer of Mardocheus for them THe copy of the letters was this Joseph Antâ—â— lib. 11. cap. 6. The great king Artaxerxes writeth these things to the princes and governours that are under him from India unto Ethiopia in an hundred and seven and twenty provinces 2 After that I became lord over many nations and had dominion over the whole world not lifted up with presumption of my authority but carrying my self alway with equity and mildness I purposed to settle my subjects continually in a quiet life and making my kingdom ‖ Or â—ildt peaceable and open for passage to the utmost coasts to renew peace which is desired of all men 3 Now when I asked my counsellours how this might be brought to pass Aman that excelled in wisdom among us and was approved for his constant good will and stedfast fidelity and had the honour of the second place in the kingdom 4 Declared unto us that in all nations throughout the world there was scattered a certain malicious people that had laws contrary to all nations and continually despised the commandments of kings so as the uniting of our kingdoms honourably intended by us cannot ‖ Or be settled go forward 5 Seeing then we understand that this people alone is continually in opposition unto all men differing in the strange manner of their laws and evil-affected to our state working all the mischief they can that our kingdom may not be firmly stablished 6 Therefore have we commanded that all they that are signified in writing unto you by Aman who is ordained over the affairs and is ‖ Or second from us next unto us shall all with their wives and children be utterly destroyed by the sword of their enemies without all mercy and pity the fourteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar of this present year 7 That they who of old and now also are malicious may in one day with violence go into the grave and so ever hereafter cause our affairs to be well settled and without trouble 8 Then Mardocheus thought upon all the works of the Lord and made his prayer unto him 9 Saying O Lord Lord the King Almighty for the whole world is in thy power and if thou hast appointed to save Israel there is no man that can gainsay thee 10 For thou hast made heaven and earth and all the wondrous things under the heaven 11 Thou art Lord of all things and there is no man that can resist thee which art the Lord. 12 Thou knowest all things and thou knowest Lord that it was neither in contempt nor pride nor for any desire of glory that I did not how down to proud Aman. 13 For I could have been content with good will for the salvation of Israel to kiss the soles of his feet 14 But I did this that I might not prefer the glory of man above the glory of God neither will I worship any but thee O God neither will I do it in pride 15 And now O Lord God and King spare thy people for their eyes are upon us to bring us to nought yea they desire to destroy the inheritance that hath been thine from the beginning 16 Despise not the portion which thou hast delivered out of Egypt for thine own self 17 Hear my prayer and be merciful unto thine inheritance turn our sorrow into joy that we may live O Lord and praise thy name and ‖ Or â—â—ut or stop not destroy not the mouths of them that praise thee O Lord. 18 All Israel in like manner cried most †Gr. mightily earnestly unto the Lord because their death was before their eyes CHAP. XIV 1 The prayer of queen Esther for her self and her people QUeen Esther also being in fear of death reforted unto the Lord 2 And laid away her glorious apparel and put on the garments of anguish and mourning and in stead of precious ointments she
hands souls destitute of help 7 That the land which thou esteemedst above all other might receive a worthy ‖ Or new inbabitants colony of Gods children 8 Nevertheless even those thou sparedst as men and didst send * Ex. 23.28 Deut. 7.20 wasps fore-runners of thine host to destroy them by little and little 9 Not that thou wast unable to bring the ungodly under the hand of the righteous in battel or to destroy them at once with cruel beasts or with one rough word 10 But executing thy judgements upon them by little and little thou gavest them place of repentance not being ignorant that they were a naughty generation and that their malice was bred in them and that their cogitation would never be changed 11 For it was a * Gen. 9.25 cursed seed from the beginning neither didst thou for fear of any man give them pardon for those things wherein they sinned 12 For who shall say * Rom. 9.20 What hast thou done or who shall withstand thy judgement or who shall accuse thee for the nations that perish whom thou hast made or who shall come to stand ‖ Or in thy presence against thee ‖ Or 〈◊〉 revenger to be revenged for the unrighteous men 13 For neither is there any God but thou that * 1 Pet 5.7 careth for all to whom thou mightest shew that thy judgement is not unright 14 Neither shall king or tyrant be able to set his face against thee for any whom thou hast punished 15 For so much then as thou art righteous thy self thou orderest all things righteously * Job 10.2 thinking it not agreeable with thy power to condemn him that hath not deserved to be punished 16 For thy power is the beginning of righteousness and because thou art the Lord of all it maketh thee to be gracious unto all 17 For when men will not beleeve that thou art of a ‖ Or â—â—â—feâ—t full power thou shewest thy strength and among them that know it thou makest their boldness manifest 18 But thou mastering thy power judgest with equity and orderest us with great favour for thou mayest use power when thou wilt 19 But by such works hast thou taught thy people that the just man should be merciful and hast made thy children to be of a good hope that thou givest repentance for sins 20 For if thou didst punish the enemies of thy children and the condemned to death with such deliberation giving them time and place whereby they might be delivered from their malice 21 With how great circumspection didst thou judge thine own sons unto whose fathers thou hast sworn made covenants of good promises 22 Therefore whereas thou dost chasten us thou scourgest our enemies a thousand times more to the intent that when we judge we should carefully think of thy goodness and when we our selves are judged we should look for mercy 23 Wherefore whereas men have lived dissolutely and unrighteously thou hast tormented them with their own ‖ Or abominable idols abominations 24 * Ch. 11.15 Rom. 1.23 For they went astray very far in the ways of errour and held them for gods which even amongst the beasts of their enemies were despised being deceived as children of no understanding 25 Therefore unto them as to children without the use of reason thou didst send a judgement to muck them 26 But they that would not be reformed by that correction wherein he dallied with them shall feel a judgement worthy of God 27 For look for what things they grudged when they were punished that is for them whom they thought to be gods now being punished in them when they saw it they acknowledged him to be the true God whom before they denied to know and therefore came extreme damnation upon them CHAP. XIII 1 They were not excused that worshipped any of Gods works 10 But most wretched are they that worship the works of mens â—ands SUrely vain are all men by nature who are ignorant of God and * Rom. 1.19 could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the work-master 2 * Deu. 4.19 17.3 But deemed either fire or wind or the swift air or the circle of the stars or the violent water or the lights of heaven to be the gods which govern the world 3 With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods let them know how much better the Lord of them is for the first authour of beauty hath created them 4 But if they were astonished at their power and vertue let them understand by them how much mightier he is that made them 5 For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen 6 But yet for this they are the less to be blamed for they peradventure err seeking God and desirous to finde him 7 For being * Rom. 1.21 conversant in his works they ‖ Or seek search him diligently and beleeve their sight because the things are beautiful that are seen 8 Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned 9 For if they were able to know so much that they could aim at the world how did they not sooner finde out the Lord thereof 10 But miserable are they and in dead things is their hope who called them gods which are the works of mens hands gold and silver to shew art in and resemblances of beasts or a stone good for nothing the work of an ancient hand 11 * If. 44.13 Now a ‖ Or timber-wright carpenter that felleth â—â—mber after he hath sawen down a tree meet for the purpose and take â—â—â—ff all the bark skilfully round about and hath wrought it handsomely and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of mans life 12 And after spending the ‖ Or chipâ— refuse of his work to dress his meat hath filled himself 13 And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use being a crooked piece of wood and full of knots hath carved it diligently when he had nothing else to do and formed it by the skill of his understanding and fashioned it to the image of a man 14 Or made it like some vile beast laying it over with vermilion and with paint colouring it red and covering every spot therein 15 And when he had made a convenient room for it set it in a wall and made it fast with iron 16 For he provided for it that it might not fall knowing that it was unable to help it self for it is an image and hath need of help 17 Then maketh he prayer for his goods for his wife and children and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life 18 For health he calleth upon that which is weak for life prayeth to that which is dead for aid humbly beseecheth †Gr. that hath no experience at all that which hath least means
to help and for a good journey he asketh of that which cannot set a foot forward 19 And for gaining and getting and for good success of his hands asketh ability to do of him that is most â—â—â—le to do any thing CHAP. XIV 1 Though men do not pray to their ships 5 yet are they saved rather by them then by their idols 8 Idols are accursed and so are the makers of them 14 The beginning of idolatry 23 and the effects thereof 30 God will punish them that swear falsly by their idols AGain one preparing himself to sail and about to pass through the raging waves calleth upon a piece of wood more rotten then the ‖ Or ship vessel that carrieth him 2 For verily desire of gain devised ‖ Or vessel or ship that and the workman built it by his skill 3 But thy providence O Father governeth it for thou hast * Ex. 14.22 made a way in the sea and a safe path in the waves 4 Shewing that thou canst save from all danger yea though a man went to sea without art 5 Nevertheless thou wouldest not that the works of thy wisdom should be idle and therefore do men commit their lives to a small piece of wood and passing the rough sea in a weak vessel are saved 6 * Gen. 6.4 7.10 For in the old time also when the proud giants perished the hope of the world governed by thy hand escaped in a weak vessel and left to all ages a seed of generation 7 For blessed is the wood whereby righteousness cometh 8 But * Ps 115.8 Baruc. 6.4 that which is made with hands is cursed as well it as he that made it he because he made it and it because being corruptible it was called god 9 * Psal 5.5 For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God 10 For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it 11 Therefore even ‖ Or to or by upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation because in the creature of God they are become an abomination and * Jer. 10.8 Habak 2.18 †Gr. scandals stumbling-blocks to the souls of men and a ‖ Or trap snare to the feet of the unwise 12 For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication and the invention of them the corruption of life 13 For neither were they from the beginning neither shall they be for ever 14 For by the vain glory of men they entred into the world and therefore shall they come shortly to an end 15 For a father afflicted with untimely mourning when he hath made an image of his childe soon taken away now honoured him as a god which was then a dead man and delivered to those that were under him ceremonies and sacrifices 16 Thus †Gr. in time in process of time an ungodly custom grown strong was kept as a saw and graven images were worshipped by the commandments of ‖ Or tyrants kings 17 Whom men could not honour ‖ Or in sight in presence because they dwelt far off they took the counterfeit of his visage from far and made an express image of a king whom they honoured to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent as if he were present 18 Also the singular diligence of the artificer did help to set forward the ignorant to more superstition 19 For he peradventure willing to please one in authority forced all his skill to make the resemblance †Gr. to the better of the best fashion 20 And so the multitude allured by the grace of the work took him now for a god which a little before was but honoured as a man 21 And this was an occasion to deceive the world for men serving either calamity or tyranny did ascribe unto stones and stocks the incommunicable ‖ Or of God name 22 Moreover this was not enough for them that they erred in the knowledge of God but whereas they lived in the great war of ignorance those so great plagues called they peace 23 For whilest they * Deut. 18.10 Jer. 7.9 19.4 slew their children in sacrifices or used secret ceremonies or made revellings of strange rites 24 They kept neither lives nor marriages any longer undefiled but either one slew another traiterously or grieved him by adultery 25 So that there reigned in all men ‖ Or â—onfusedly without exception bloud man-slaughter their and dissimulation corruption unfaithfulness tumults perjury 26 Disquieting of good men forgetfulness of good turns defiling of souls changing of ‖ Or six kinde disorder in marriages adultery and shameless uncleanness 27 For the worshipping of idols †Gr nanuless not to be named is the beginning the cause and the end of all evil 28 For either they are mad when they be merry or prophesie lies or live unjustly or else lightly forswear themselves 29 For insomuch as their trust is in idols which have no life though they swear falsly yet they look not to be hurt 30 Howbeit for both causes shall they be justly punished both because they thought not well of God ‖ Or devoted giving heed unto idols and also unjustly swore in deceit despising holiness 31 For it is not the power of them by whom they swear but it is the just vengeance of sinners that punisheth always the offence of the ungodly CHAP. XV. 1 We do acknowledge the true God 7 The folly of idol-makers 14 and of the enemies of Gods people 15 because besides the idols of the Gentiles 18 they worshipped vile beasts BUt thou O God art gracious and true long-suffering and in mercy ordering all things 2 For if we sin we are thine knowing thy power but we will not sin knowing that we are counted thine 3 For to know thee is perfect righteousness yea to know thy power is the root of immortality 4 For neither did the mischievous invention of men deceive us nor an image spotted with divers colours the painters fruitless labour 5 The sight whereof ‖ Or turnetha reproach to the foolish enticeth fools to lust after it and so they desire the form of a dead image that hath no breath 6 Both they that make them they that desire them and they that worship them are lovers of evil things and are worthy to have such things to trust upon 7 For the * Rom. 9.21 potter tempering soft earth fashioneth every vessel with much labour for our service yea of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary but what is the use of either sort the potter himself is the judge 8 And employing his labours lewdly he maketh a vain god of the same clay even he which a little before was made of earth himself and within a little while after returneth to the
same out of the which he was taken when his * Luk. 12.20 lise which was lent him shall be demanded 9 Notwithstanding his care is not that he shall ‖ Or be sick or die have much labour nor that his life is short but striveth to excel gold-smiths and silver-smiths and endeavoureth to do like the workers in brass and counteth it his glory to make counterfeit things 10 His heart is ashes his hope is more vile then earth and his life of less value then clay 11 Forasmuch as he knew not his Maker and him that inspired into him an active soul and breathed in a living spirit 12 But they counted our life a pastime and out †Gr life time here a market for gain for say they we must be getting every way though it be by evil means 13 ‖ Or so For this man that of earthly matter maketh brickle vessels and graven images knoweth himself to offend above all others 14 And all the enemies of thy people that hold them in subjection are most foolish and are more miserable then very babes 15 For they counted all the idols of the heathen to be gods which neither have the use of eyes to see nor noses to draw ‖ Or â—ir breath nor ears to hear nor singers of hands to handle and as for their feet they are slow to go 16 For man made them and he that borrowed his own spirit fashioned them but no man can make a god like unto himself 17 For being mortal he worketh a dead thing with wicked hands for he himself is better then the things which he worshippeth whereas he lived once but they never 18 Yea they worshipped those beasts also that are most hateful for being compared together some are worse then others 19 Neither are they beautiful so much as to be desired in respect of beasts but they went without the praise of God and his blessing CHAP. XVI 2 God gave strange meat to his people to stir up their appetite and vile beasts to their enemies to take it from them 5 He stung with his serpents 12 but soon healed them by his word ontly 17 The creatures altered their nature to pleasure Gods people and to offend their enemies THerefore by the like were they punished worthily and by the multitude of beasts * Num. 21. â— Ch. 11.15 16. tormented 2 In stead of which punishment dealing graciously with thine own people thou preparedst for them meat of a strange taste even * Num. 11.31 quails to stir up their appetite 3 To the end that they desiring food might for the ugly sight of the beasts sent among them lothe even that which they must needs desire but these suffering penury for a short space might be made partakers of a strange taste 4 For it was requisite that upon them exercising tyranny should come penury which they could not avoid but to these it should onely be shewed how their enemies were tormented 5 For when the horrible fierceness of beasts came upon ‖ Or thy people these and they perished with the * Num. 21.6 1 Cor. 10.9 stings of crooked serpents thy wrath endured not for ever 6 But they were troubled for a small season that they might be admonished having a * Num. 21.9 signe of salvation to put them in remembrance of the commandment of thy law 7 For he that turned himself towards it was not saved by the thing that he saw but by thee that art the Saviour of all 8 And in this thou madest thine enemies confess that it is thou who deliverest from all evil 9 For * Ex. 8.26 10.4 Rev. 9.3 c. them the bitings of grashoppers and flies killed neither was there found any remedy for their life for they were worthy to be punished by such 10 But thy sons not the very teeth of venemous dragons overcame for thy mercy was ever by them and healed them 11 For they were †Gr. stunâ— pricked that they should remember the words and were quickly saved that not falling into deep forgetfulness they might be ‖ Or never drawn from continually mindful of thy goodness 12 For it was neither herb nor mollifying plaister that restored them to health but thy word O Lord which healeth all things 13 For thou hast power of life and death thou * Deut. 32.39 1 Sam. 2.6 Ps 105. leadest to the gates of hell and bringest up again 14 A man indeed killeth through his malice and the spirit when it is gone forth returneth not neither the soul received up cometh again 15 But it is not possible to escape thine hand 16 * Exod 9.23 For the ungodly that denied to know thee were scourged by the strength of thine arm with strange rains hails and showers were they persecuted that they could not avoid and through fire were they consumed 17 For which is most to be wondred at the fire had more force in the water that quencheth all things for the world * Judg. 5.20 fighteth for the righteous 18 For sometime the flame was mitigated that it might not burn up the beasts that were sent against the ungodly but themselves might see and perceive that they were persecuted with the judgement of God 19 And at another time it burneth even in the midst of water above the power of fire that it might destroy the fruits of an unjust land 20 * Ex. 16 1â— Num. 11.7 Ps 78.25 John 6.31 In stead whereof thou feddest thine own people with angels food and didst send them from heaven bread prepared without their labour able to content every mans delight and agreeing to every taste 21 For thy * Judg. 6.4 ‖ Or manna sustenance declared thy sweetness unto thy children and serving to the appetite of the eater ‖ Or was tempered tempered it self to every mans liking 22 * Ch. 19.20 But snow and ice endured the fire and melted not that they might know that fire burning in the hail and sparkling in the rain did destroy the fruits of the enemies 23 But this again did even forget his own strength that the righteous might be nourished 24 For the creature that seveth thee who art the Maker increaseth his strength against the unrighteous for their punishment and abateth his strength for the benefit of such as put their trust in thee 25 Therefore even then was it altered into all ‖ Or things fashions and was obedient to thy grace that nourisheth all things according to the desire ‖ Or of them that prayed of them that had need 26 That thy children O Lord whom thou lovest might know that * Deut. 8.3 Matth. 4.4 it is not the growing of fruits that nourisheth man but that it is thy word which preserveth them that put their trust in thee 27 For that which was not destroyed of the fire being warmed with a little sun-beam soon melted away 28 That it might be known that
is at rest but the life of the fool is worse then death 12 Seven days do men mourn for him that is dead but for a fool and an ungodly man all the days of his life 13 Talk not much with a fool and go not to him that hath no understanding * Ch. 12.12 beware of him lest thou have trouble and thou shalt never be defiled ‖ Or when â—e sâ—akes off in filth with his fooleries depart from him and thou shalt finde rest and never be ‖ Or wearied disquieted with madness 14 What is heavier then lead what is the name thereof but a fool 15 * Pro. 27.3 Sand and salt and a mass of iron is easier to bear then a man without understanding 16 As timber girt and bound together in a building cannot be loosed with shaking so the heart that is stablished by advised counsel shall fear at no time 17 A heart settled upon a thought of understanding is as a fair plaistering ‖ Or of a polished wall on the wall of a gallery 18 Pales set on an high place will never stand against the wind so a fearful heart in the imagination of a fool cannot stand against any fear 19 He that pricketh the eye will make tears to fall and he that pricketh the heart maketh it to shew her knowledge 20 Whoso casteth a stone at the birds frayeth them away and he that uphraideth his friend breaketh friendship 21 Though thou drewest a sword at thy friend yet despair not for there may be a returning to favour 22 If thou hast opened thy mouth against thy friend fear not for there may be a reconciliation except for upbraiding or pride or disclosing of secrets or a treacherous wound for for these things every friend will depart 23 Be faithful to thy neighbour in his poverty that thou mayest rejoyce in his prosperity abide stedfast unto him in the time of his trouble that thou mayest be heir with him in his heritage for a mean eâ—tate is not always to be contemned nor the rich that is foolish to be had in admiration 24 As the vapour and smoke of a furnace gueth before the fire so reviling before bloud 25 I will not be ashamed to defend a friend neither will I hide my fell from him 26 And if any evil happen unto me by him every one that heareth it will beware of him 27 * Psal 141.3 Who shall set a watch before my mouth and a seal of wisdom upon my lips that I fall not suddenly by them and that my tongue destroy me not CHAP. XXIII 1 A prayer for grace to flee sin 9 We may not use swearing 14 but remember our parents 16 Of three sorts of sin 23 The adulterous wife sinneth many ways O Lord Father and Governour of all my whole life leave me not to their counsels and let me not fall by them 2 Who will set scourges over my thoughts and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart that they spare me not for mine ignorances and it pass not by my sins 3 Lest mine ignorances increase and my sins abound to my destruction and I fall before mine adversaries and mine enemy rejoyce over me whose hope is far from thy mercy 4 O Lord Father and God of my life give me not a proud look but turn away from thy servants always ‖ Or a giant-like a haughty minde 5 Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee 6 Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me and give not over me thy servant into an impudent minde 7 Hear O ye children the discipline of the mouth he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips 8 The sinner shall be left in his foolishness both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby 9 * Ex. 20.7 Ch. 27.14 Mat. 5.33 34. XXVIII 1 Against revengâ— 8 quarreling 10 anger 15 and backbiting HE that revengeth shall finde vengeance from the Lord and he will surely keep his sins in remembrance 2 Forgive thy neighbour the hurt that he hath done unto thee so shall thy sins also be forgiven when thou prayest 3 One man beareth hatred against another and doth he seek pardon from the Lord 4 He sheweth no mercy to a man which is like himself and doth he ask forgiveness of his own sins 5 If he that is but flesh nourish hatred who will intreat for pardon of his sins 6 Remember thy end and let enmity cease remember corruption and death and abide in the commandments 7 Remember the commandments and bear no malice to thy neighbour remember the covenant of the Highest and wink at ignorance 8 * Chap. 8.1 Abstain from strife and thou shalt diminish thy sins for a furious man will kindle strife 9 A sinful man disquieteth friends and maketh debate among them that be at peace 10 * Prov. 26.21 As the matter of the fire is so it burneth and as a mans strength is so is his wrath and according to his riches his anger riseth and the stronger they are which contend the more they will be inflamed 11 An hasty contention kindleth a fire and an hasty fighting sheddeth bloud 12 If thou blow the spark it shall burn if thou spit upon it it shall be quenched and both these come out of thy mouth 13 * Chap. 21.28 Curse the whisperer and double-tongued for such have destroyed many that were at peace 14 A backbiting tongue hath â—â—squieted many and driven them from nation to nation strong cities hath it pulled down and overthrown the houses of great men 15 A ‖ Or tâ—ed backbiting tongue hath cast out vertuous women and deprived them of their labours 16 Whoso hearkneth unto it shall never finde rest and never dwell quietly 17 The stroke of the whip maketh marks in the flesh but the stroke of the tongue breaketh the bones 18 Many have faln by the edge of the sword but not so many as have faln by the tongue 19 Well is he that is defended from it and hath not passed through the venome thereof who hath not drawn the yoke thereof nor hath been bound in her bands 20 For the yoke thereof is a yoke of iron and the bands thereof are bands of brass 21 The death thereof is an evil death the grave were better then it 22 It shall not have rule over them that fear God neither shall they be burnt with the flame thereof 23 Such as forsake the Lord shall fall into it and it shall burn in them and not be quenched it shall be sent upon them as a lion and devour them as a leopard 24 Look that thou hedge thy possession about with thorns and binde up thy silver and gold 25 And weight thy words in a balance and make a door and bar for thy mouth 26 Beware thou slide not by it lest thou fall before him that lieth in wait CHAP. XXXVII 1 How to know friends and counsellours 12 The discretion and wisdom of a godly man blesseth him 27 Learn to refrain thine appetite EVery friend saith I am his friend also but there is a friend which is onely a friend in name 2 Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy 3 O wicked imagination whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit 4 There is a companion which rejoyceth in the prosperity of a friend but in the time of trouble will be against him 5 There is a companion which helpeth his friend for the belly and taketh up the buckler ‖ Or in presence of the enemy against the enemy 6 Forget not thy friend in thy minde and be not unmindful of him in thy riches 7 Every councellour extolleth counsel but there is some that councelleth for himself 8 Beware of a counsellour and know before ‖ Or what use there is of him what need he hath for he will counsel for himself lest he cast the lot upon thee 9 And say unto thee Thy way is good and afterward he stand on the other side to see what shall be fall thee 10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee 11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous neither with a coward in matters of war nor with a merchant concerning exchange nor with a buyer of selling nor with an envious man of thankfulness nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness nor with the slothful for any work nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work nor with an idle servant of much business hearken not unto these in any mattter of counsel 12 But be continually with a godly man whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord whose minde is according to thy minde and will sorrow with thee if thou shalt miscarry 13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand for there is no man more faithful unto thee then it 14 For a mans minde is sometime wont to tell him more then seven watchmen that sit above in an high tower 15 And above all this pray to the most High that he will direct thy way in truth 16 Let reason go before every enterprise and counsel before every action 17 The countenance is a signe of changing of the heart 18
Agarenes that seek wisdom upon earth the merchants of Meran and of Theman the ‖ Or expounders authours of sables and searchers out of understanding none of these have known the way of wisdom or remember her paths 24 O Israel how great is the house of God and how large is the place of his possession 25 Great and hath none end high and unmeasurable 26 There were the giants famous from the beginning that were of so great stature and so expert in war 27 Those did not the Lord choose neither gave he the way of knowledge unto them 28 But they were destroyed because they had no wisdom and perished through their own foolishness 29 Who hath gone up into heaven and taken her and brought her down from the clouds 30 Who hath gone over the sea and found her and will bring her for pure gold 31 No man knoweth her way nor thinketh of her path 32 But he that knoweth all things knoweth her and hath found her out with his understanding he that prepared the earth for evermore hath filled it with fourfooted beasts 33 He that sendeth forth light and it goeth calleth it again and it obeyeth him with fear 34 The stars shined in their watches and rejoyced when he called them they say Here we be and so with cheerfulness they shewed light unto him that made them 35 This is our God and there shall none other be accounted of in comparision of him 36 He hath found out all the way of knowledge and hath given it unto Jacob his servant and to Israel his beloved 37 * Prov. 8.31 Joh. 1.14 Afterward did he shew himself upon earth and conversed with men CHAP. IV. 1 The book of commandments is that wisdom which was commanded in the former chapter 25 The Jews are moved to patience and to hope for the deliverance THis is the book of the commandments of God and the law that endureth for ever all they that keep it shall come to life but such as leave it shall die 2 Turn thee O Jacob and take hold of it walk †Gr. to the shining before the light thereof in the presence of the light thereof that thou mayest be illuminated 3 Give not thine honour to another nor the things that are profitable unto thee to a strange nation 4 O Israel happy are we for things that are pleasing to God are made known unto us 5 Be of good cheer my people the memorial of Israel 6 Ye were sold to the nations not for your destruction but because ye moved God to wrath ye were delivered unto the enemies 7 For ye provoked him that made you by * 1 Cor 10.20 sacrificing unto devils and not to God 8 Ye have forgotten the everlasting God that brought you up and ye have grieved Jerusalem that nursed you 9 For when she saw the wrath of God coming upon you she said Hearken O ye that dwell about Sion God hath brought upon me great mourning 10 For I saw the captivity of my sons and daughters which the Everlasting brought upon them 11 With joy did I nourish them but sent them away with weeping and mourning 12 Let no man rejoyce over me a widow and forsaken of many who for the sins of my children am left desolate because they departed from the law of God 13 They knew not his statutes nor walked in the ways of his commandments nor trode in the paths ‖ Or of his discipline in righteousness of discipline in his righteousness 14 Let them that dwell about Sion come and remember ye the captivity of my sons and daughters which the Evelasting hath brought upon them 15 For he hath brought a nation upon them from far a shameless nation and of a strange language who neither reverenced old man nor pitied childe 16 These have carried away the dear-beloved children of the widow and left her that was alone desolate without daughters 17 But what can I help you 18 For he that brought these plagues upon you will deliver you from the hands of your enemies 19 Go your way O my children go your way for I am left desolate 20 I have put off the clothing of ‖ Or prosperity peace and put upon me the sackcloth of my prayer I will cry unto the Everlasting ‖ Or in the time of mine affliction * Ps 116.2 137.7 in my days 21 Be of good cheer O my children cry unto the Lord and he shall deliver you from the power and hand of the enemies 22 For my hope is in the Everlasting that he will save you and joy is come unto me from the holy One because of the mercy which shall soon come unto you from the Everlasting our Saviour 23 For I sent you out with mourning and weeping But God will give you to me again with joy and gladness for ever 24 Like as now the neighbours of Sion have seen your captivity so shall they see shortly your salvation from our God which shall come upon you with great glory and brightness of the Everlasting 25 My children suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from God for thine enemy hath persecuted thee but shortly thou shalt see his destruction and shalt tread upon his neck 26 ‖ Or My darlings My delicate ones have gone rough ways and were taken away as a flock caught of the enemies 27 Be of good comfort O my children and cry unto God for you shall be remembred of him that brought these things upon you 28 For as it was your minde to go astray from God so being returned seek him ten times more 29 For he that hath brought these plagues upon you shall bring you everlasting joy again with your salvation 30 Take a good heart O Jerusalem for he that gave thee that name will comfort thee 31 Miserable are they that afflicted thee and rejoyced at thy fall 32 Miserable are the cities which thy children served miserable is she that received thy sons 33 For as she rejoyced at thy ruine and was glad of thy fall so shall she be grieved for her own desolation 34 For I will take away the rejoycing of her great multitude and her pride shall be turned into mourning 35 For fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting long to endure and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great time 36 O Jerusalem look about thee towards the east and behold the joy that cometh unto thee from God 37 Lo thy sons come whom thou sentest away they come gathered together from the east to the west by the word of the holy One rejoycing in the glory of God CHAP. V. 1 Jerusalem is moved to rejoyce 5 and to behold their return out of captivity with glory PUt off O Jerusalem the garment of thy mourning and affliction and put on the comeliness of the glory that cometh from God for ever 2 Cast about thee a double garment of the righteousness which cometh from God
killeth those that sought for him THen came up John from Gazara and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done 2 Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons Judas and John said unto them I my brethren and my fathers house have ever from our youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel things have prospered so well in our hands that we have delivered Israel oftentimes 3 But now I am old and ye by Gods mercy are of a sufficient age be ye in stead of me and my brother and go and fight for our nation and the help from heaven be with you 4 So he chose out of the countrey twenty thousand men of war with horsmen who went out against Cendebeus rested that night at Modin 5 And when as they rose in the morning and went into the plain behold a mighty great host both of footmen and hors-men came against them howbeit there was a water-brook betwixt them 6 So he and his people pitched over against them and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water-brook he went first over himself and then the men seeing him passed through after him 7 That done he divided his men and set the hors-men in the midst of the footmen for the enemies hors-men were very many 8 Then sounded they with the holy trumpets whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight so that many of them were slain and the remnant gat them to the strong hold 9 At that time was Judas Johns brother wounded but John still followed after them until he came to Cedron which Cendebeus had built 10 ‖ Or Which when be bad set on fire they fled unto the towres in the fields of Azotus and there were slain c. So they fled even unto the towres in the fields of Azotus wherefore he burnt it with fire so that there were slain of them about two thousand men Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace 11 Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain and he had abundance of silver and gold 12 For he was the high priests son in law 13 Wherefore his heart being lifted up he thought to get the countrey to himself and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them 14 Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the countrey and taking care for the good ordering of them at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons Mattathias and Judas in the hundred threescore and seventh year in the eleventh moneth called Sabat 15 Where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold called Ducus which he had built made them a great banquet howbeit he had hid men there 16 So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely Ptolemee and his men rose up and took their weapons and came upon Simon into the banqueting-place and slew him and his two sons and certain of his servants 17 In which doing he committed a great treachery and recompensed evil for good 18 Then Ptolemee wrote these things and sent to the king that he should send him an host to aid him and he would deliver him the countrey and cities 19 He sent others also to Gazara to kill John and unto the †Gr. captains of thousands tribunes he sent letters to come unto him that he might give them silver and gold and rewards 20 And others he sent to take Jerusalem and the mountain of the temple 21 Now one had run afore to Gazara and told John that his father brethren were slain quoth he Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also 22 Hereof when he heard he was sore astonished So he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him and slew them for he knew that they sought to make him away 23 As concerning the rest of the acts of John and his wars and worthy deeds which he did and the building of the walls which he made and his doings 24 Behold these are written in the Chronicles of his priesthood from the time he was made high priest after his father ¶ The second Book of MACCABEES CHAP. I. 1 A letter of the Jews from Jerusalem to them of Egypt to thank God for the death of Antiochus 19 Of the fire that was bidden in the pit 24 The trayer of Neemias THe brethren the Jews that be at Jerusalem and in the land of Judea wish unto the brethren the Jews that are throughout Egypt health and peace 2 God be gracious unto you and remember his covenant that he made with Abraham Isaac and Jacob his faithful servants 3 And give you all an heart to serve him and to do his will with a good courage and a willing minde 4 And open your hearts in his law and commandments and send you peace 5 And hear your prayers and he at one with you and never forsake you in time of trouble 6 And now we be here praying for you 7 What time as Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and ninth year we the Jews wrote unto you in the extremity of trouble that came upon us in those years from the time that Jason and his company revolted from the holy land and kingdom 8 And burnt the porch and shed innocent bloud then we prayed unto the Lord and were heard we offered also sacrifices and fine flour and lighted the lamps and set forth the loaves 9 And now see that ye keep the feast of * Lev. 23. â—â— tabernacles in the moneth Casleu 10 In the hundred fourscore and eighth year the people that were at Jerusalem and in Judea and the council and Judas sent greeting and health unto Aristobulus king Ptolemeus master who was of the stock of the anointed priests and to the Jews that were in Egypt 11 Insomuch as God hath delivered us from great perils we thank him highly as having been in battel against a king 12 For he cast them out that fought within the holy city 13 For when the leader was come into Persia and the army with him that seemed invincible they were slain in the temple of Nanea by the deceit of Naneas priests 14 For Antiochus as though he would marry her came into the place and his friends that were with him to receive money in name of a dowry 15 Which when the priests of Nanea had set forth and he was entred with a small company into the compass of the temple they shut the temple as soon as Antiochus was come in 16 And opening a privie door of the roof they threw stones like thunderbolts and stroke down the captain hewed them in pieces smote off their heads and cast them to those that were without 17 Blessed be our God in all things who hath delivered up the ungodly 18 Therefore whereas we are now purposed to keep the purification of the temple upon the five and twentieth day of the moneth * Lev.
commaâ—dment but I will obey the commandment of the law that was given unto our fathers by Moses 31 And thou that hast been the authour of all mischief against the Hebrews shalt not escape the hands of God 32 For we suffer because of our sins 33 And though the living Lord be angry with us a little while for our chastning and correction yet shall he beat one again with his servants 34 But thou O godless man and of all other most wicked be not lifted up without a cause nor puffed up with uncertain hopes lifting up thy hand against the servants of God 35 For thou hast not yet escaped the judgement of almighty God who seeth all things 36 For our brethren who now have suffered a short pain are dead under Gods covenant of everlasting life but thou through the judgement of God shalt receive just punishment for thy pride 37 But I as my brethren offer up my body and life for the laws of our fathers beseeching God that he would speedily be merciful unto our nation and that thou by torments and plagues mayest confess that he alone is God 38 And that in me and my brethren the wrath of the Almighty which is justly brought upon all our nation may cease 39 Then the king being in a rage handled him worse then all the rest and took it grievously that he was mocked 40 So this man died undefiled and put his whole trust in the Lord. 41 Last of all after the sons the mother died 42 Let this be enough now to have spoken concerning the idolatrous feasts and the extreme tortures CHAP. VIII 1 Judas gathereth an host 9 Nicanor is sent against him who Presumeth to make much money of his prisoners 16 Judas encourageth his men and putteth Nicanor to flight 18 and divideth the spoils 30 Other enemies are also defeated 35 and Nicanor fleeth with grief to Antioch THen Judas Maccabeus and they that were with him went privily into the towns and called their kins folks together and took unto them all such as continued in the Jews religion and assembled about six thousand men 2 And they called upon the Lord that he would look upon the people that was troden down of all and also pity the temple profaned of ungodly men 3 And that he would have compassion upon the city sore defaced and ready to be made even with the ground and hear the bloud that cried unto him 4 And remember the wicked slaughter of harmless infants and the blasphemies committed against his name and that he would shew his hatred against the wicked 5 Now when Maccabeus had his company about him he could not be withstood by the heathen for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy 6 Therefore he came at unawares and burnt up towns and cities and got into his hands the most commodious places and overcame and put to flight no small number of his enemies 7 But specially took he advantage of the night for such privy attempts insomuch that the bruit of his manliness was spread every where 8 So when Philip saw that this man increased by little and little and that things prospered with him still more and more he wrote unto Ptolemeus the governour of Celosyria and Phenice to yeeld more aid to the kings affairs 9 Then forthwith choosing Nicanor the son of Patroclus one of his special friends he sent him with no fewer then twenty thousand of all nations under him to root out the whole generation of the Jews and with him he joyned also Gorgias a captain who in matters of war had great experience 10 So Nicanor undertook to make so much money of the captive Jews as should defray the tribute of two thousand talents which the king was to pay to the Romanes 11 Wherefore immediately he sent to the cities upon the sea-coast proclaiming a sale of the captive Jews and promising that they should have fourscore and ten bodies for one talent not expecting the vengeance that was to follow upon him from the almighty God 12 Now when word was brought unto Judas of Nicanors coming and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the army was at hand 13 They that were fearful and distrusted the justice of God fled and conveyed themselves away 14 Others sold all that they had left and withal besought the Lord to deliver them being sold by the wicked Nicanor before they met together 15 And if not for their own sakes yet for the covenants he had made with their fathers and for his holy and glorious name sake by which they were called 16 So Maccabeus called his men together unto the number of six thousand and exhorted them not to be stricken with terrour of the enemy nor to fear the great multitude of the heathen who came wrongfully against them but to fight manfully 17 And to set before their eyes the injury that they had unjustly done to the holy place and the cruel handling of the city whereof they made a mockery and also the taking away of the government of their forefathers 18 For they said he trust in their weapons and holdness but our confidence is in the almighty God who at a beck can cast down both them that come against us and also all the world 19 Moreover he recounted unto them what helps their forefathers had found and how they were delivered when under Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand perished 20 And he told them of the battel that they had in Babylon with the Galatians how they came but eight thousand in all to the business with four thousand Macedonians and that the Macedonians being perplexed the eight thousand destroyed an hundred and twenty thousand because of the help that they had from heaven and so received a great booty 21 Thus when he had made them bold with these words and ready to die for the laws and the countrey he divided his army into four parts 22 And joyned with himself his own brethren leaders of each band to wit Simon and Josepâ— and Jonathan giving each one fifteen hundred men 23 Also be appointed Eleazar to read the holy book and when he had given them this watch-word The help of God himself leading the first band he joyned battel with Nicanor 24 And by the help of the Almighty they slew above nine thousand of their enemies and wounded and maimed the most part of Nicanors host and so put all to flight 25 And took their money that came to buy them and pursued them far but lacking time they returned 26 For it was the day before the sabbath and therefore they would no longer pursue them 27 So when they had gathered ‖ That is the enemies armour their armour together and spoiled their enemies they occupied themselves about the sabbath yeelding exceeding praise and thanks to the Lord who had preserved them unto that day which was the beginning of mercy distilling upon them 28 And after the sabbath when they had
am sent to speak unto thee and to shew thee these glad tidings 20 And behold thou shalt be dumb and not able to speak until the day that these things shall be performed because thou beleevest not my words which shall be fulfilled in their season 21 And the people waited for Zacharias and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple 22 And when he came out he could not speak unto them and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple for he beckned unto them and remained speechless 23 And it came to pass that aâ—soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished he departed to his own house 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived and hid her self five moneths saying 25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men 26 And in the sixth moneths the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee named Nazareth 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David and the virgins name was Mary 28 And the angel came in unto her and said Hail thou that art ‖ Or graciously accepted or much graced See ver 30. highly favoured the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women 29 And when she saw him she was troubled at his saying and cast in her minde what manner of salutation this should be 30 And the angel said unto her Fear not Mary for thou hast found favour with God 31 * Isa 7.14 Mat. 1.21 And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bring forth a son and shalt call his name Jesus 32 He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Highest and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David 33 * Dan. 7.14 Mic. 4.7 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever and of his kingdom there shall be no end 34 Then said Mary unto the angel How shall this be seeing I know not a man 35 And the angel answered and said unto her The holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God 36 And behold thy cousin Elisabeth she hath also conceived a son in her old age this is the sixth moneth with her who was called barren 37 For with God nothing shall be unpossible 38 And Mary said Behold the handmaid of the Lord be it unto me according to thy word And the angel departed from her 39 And Mary arose in those days and went into the hill-countrey with haste into a city of Judah 40 And entred into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth 41 And it came to pass that when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary the babe leaped in her womb Elisabeth was filled with the holy Ghost 42 And she spake out with a loud voice and said Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb 43 And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me 44 For lo assoon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears the babe leaped in my womb for joy 45 And blessed is she ‖ Or which beleeved that there that beleeved for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said My soul doth magnifie the Lord. 47 And my spirit hath rejoyced in God my Saviour 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his hand-maiden for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things and holy is his name 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation 51 * Isa 51. â— He hath shewed strength with his arm * Ps 33.10 he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of three moneths and returned to her own house 57 Now Elisabeths full time came that she should be delivered and she brought forth a son 58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her and they rejoyced with her 59 And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the childe they called him Zacharias after the name of his father 60 And his mother answered said Not so but he shall be called John 61 And they said unto her There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name 62 And they made signs to his father how he would have him called 63 And he asked for a writing-table and wrote saying His name is John And they marvelled all 64 And his mouth was opened immediately and his tongue loosed and he spake and praised God 65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them all these ‖ Or things sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill countrey of Judea 66 And all they that had heard them laid them up in their hearts saying What manner of childe shall this be And the hand of the Lord was with him 67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the holy Ghost and prophesied saying 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he hath visited and redeemed his people 69 * Psal 132.17 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70 * Jer. 23.6 30.10 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets which have been since the world began 71 That we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all that hate us 72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers and to see and bow down their back alway 11 I say then Have they stumbled that they should fall God forbid but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles for to provoke them to jealousie 12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world and the ‖ Or decay or loss diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles how much more their fulness 13 For I speak to you Gentiles in as much as I am the apostle of the Gentiles I magnifie mine office 14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh and might save some of them 15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world what shall the receiving of them be but life from the dead 16 For if the first-fruit be holy the lump is also holy and if the root be holy so are the branches 17 And if some of the branches be broken off and thou being a wilde olive-tree wert graffed in ‖ Or for them amongst them and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive-tree 18 Boast not against the branches but if thou boast thou bearest not the root but the root thee 19 Thou wilt lay then The branches were broken off that I might be grassed in 20 Well because of unbelief they were broken off and thou standest by faith Be not high-minded but fear 21 For if God spared not the natural branches take heed lest he also spare not thee 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God on them which fell severity but towards thee goodness if thou continue in his goodness otherwise thou also shalt be cut off 23 And they also if they abide not still in unbelief shall be graffed in for God is able to grass them in again 24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive-tree which is wilde by nature and wert grassed contrary to nature into a good olive-tree how much more shall these which be the natural branches be grassed into their own olive-tree 25 For I would not brethren that ye should be ignorant of this mystery lest ye should be wise in your own conceits that ‖ Or hardness blindness in part is hapned to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in 26 And so all Israel shall be saved as it is written * Is 59.20 There shall come out of Sion the deliverer and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. 27 For this is my covenant unto them when I shall take away their sins 28 As concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake but as touching the election they are beloved for the fathers sakes 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance 30 For as ye in times past have not ‖ Or obeyed beleeved God yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief 31 Even so have these also now not ‖ Or obeyed beleeved that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy 32 For God hath ‖ Or shut them all up together concluded them all in unbelief that he might have mercy upon all 33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgements and his ways past finding out 34 * Is 40.13 Wild. 9.13 1 Cor. 2.16 For who hath known the minde of the Lord or who hath been his counsellour 35 Or who hath first given to him and it shall be recompensed unto him again 36 For of him and through him and to him are all things to whom be glory for ever Amen CHAP. XII 1 Gods mercies must move us to please God 3 No man must think too well of himself 6 but attend every one on that calling wherein be is placed 9 Love and many other duties are required of us 19 Revenge is specially forbidden I Beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service 2 And be not conformed to this world but * Eph. 4.23 be ye transformed by the renewing of your minde that ye may * Eph. 5.17 prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God 3 For I say through the grace given unto me to every man that is among you not to think of himself more highly then he ought to think but to think †Gr to sobriety soberly according as God hath dealt * Eph. 4.7 to every man the measure of saith 4 For * Cor. 12.12 as we have many members in one body and all members have not the same office 5 So we being many are one body in Christ and every one members one of another 6 * 1 Pet. 4.10 11.
