hold_v fast_o some_o render_v it_o obnoxii_fw-la some_o obstricti_fw-la some_o qui_fw-la tenentur_fw-la all_o agree_v in_o the_o same_o notion_n of_o its_o import_v as_o much_o as_o bound_v hold_v of_o god_n people_n all_o their_o day_n come_v next_o to_o be_v consider_v 4._o what_o be_v mean_v by_o all_o their_o life_n time_n what_o deliverance_n if_o all_o their_o life_n time_n so_o subject_a i_o answer_v it_o be_v plain_a that_o by_o all_o their_o life_n time_n must_v be_v mean_v all_o that_o part_n of_o their_o life_n time_n before_o they_o come_v to_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o this_o deliverance_n by_o christ_n and_o be_v equivalent_a to_o all_o their_o former_a life_n time_n look_v backward_o to_o their_o first_o not_o forward_o to_o their_o last_o breath_n that_o the_o time_n pass_v of_o their_o life_n be_v only_o here_o intend_v as_o the_o time_n of_o this_o their_o bondage_n be_v clear_a in_o the_o very_a text_n who_o all_o their_o life_n time_n be_v not_o still_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v but_o only_o who_o can_v never_o otherwise_o all_o their_o life_n time_n or_o before_o get_v any_o true_a freedom_n from_o these_o fear_n and_o this_o bondage_n but_o by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o that_o upon_o the_o most_o serious_a meditation_n and_o due_a application_n of_o the_o merit_n and_o design_n of_o his_o death_n so_o then_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o all_o their_o life_n time_n enslave_v bind_v and_o as_o it_o be_v manacle_v and_o fetter_v in_o prison_n but_o come_v to_o a_o right_a understanding_n of_o christ_n death_n they_o be_v wonderful_o set_v loose_a and_o at_o liberty_n by_o christ_n so_o as_o not_o to_o be_v hold_v fast_o in_o the_o clutch_n of_o satan_n although_o all_o their_o life_n time_n before_o conscience_n and_o the_o devil_n hold_v they_o fast_o by_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o judgement_n after_o which_o liberty_n so_o obtain_v none_o of_o god_n people_n be_v quite_o take_v prisoner_n hold_v and_o bind_v hand_n and_o foot_n as_o we_o say_v with_o these_o fear_n though_o alas_o many_o time_n sore_o assault_v the_o devil_n may_v be_v so_o bold_a as_o to_o arrest_v they_o with_o these_o fear_n but_o can_v never_o altogether_o captivate_v and_o enslave_v they_o much_o less_o carry_v they_o away_o as_o it_o be_v to_o the_o strong_a hold_n and_o detain_v they_o under_o the_o power_n thereof_o where_o ever_o he_o find_v god_n child_n arrest_v they_o with_o these_o fear_n of_o death_n he_o find_v they_o in_o priutledged_a place_n as_o i_o may_v say_v his_o arrest_n be_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n the_o gospel_n charter_n and_o there_o be_v one_o especial_o if_o flee_v to_o and_o call_v upon_o that_o will_v take_v off_o the_o arrest_n even_o jesus_n christ_n the_o captain_n of_o their_o salvation_n and_o powerful_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o devil_n black_a frightful_a suggestion_n and_o all_o those_o astonish_a fear_n have_v destroy_v he_o himself_o and_o already_o put_v he_o to_o his_o fear_v and_o tremble_v that_o through_o death_n he_o may_v destroy_v he_o that_o have_v the_o power_n of_o death_n that_o be_v the_o devil_n and_o so_o deliver_v they_o who_o through_o fear_n of_o death_n be_v all_o their_o life_n time_n subject_a to_o bondage_n five_o what_o deliverance_n be_v this_o wrought_v for_o the_o people_n of_o god_n by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o transaction_n of_o his_o death_n it_o be_v a_o deliverance_n so_o describe_v here_o to_o observe_v the_o logic_n of_o the_o text_n as_o that_o it_o direct_o carry_v our_o eye_n to_o behold_v first_o the_o deliverer_n himself_o jesus_n christ_n second_o the_o misery_n he_o deliver_v from_o first_o the_o deliverer_n himself_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v a_o deliverance_n design_v and_o intend_v by_o he_o that_o he_o may_v destroy_v he_o that_o have_v the_o power_n of_o death_n that_o be_v the_o devil_n and_o also_o that_o he_o may_v deliver_v they_o who_o through_o fear_n of_o death_n be_v all_o their_o life_n time_n subject_a to_o bendage_n by_o take_v unto_o himself_o flesh_n and_o blood_n by_o live_v and_o die_v this_o be_v his_o great_a design_n to_o deliver_v poor_a mortal_a man_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n great_a comfort_n sure_o he_o he_o will_v not_o fail_v of_o his_o end_n how_o great_a be_v he_o who_o disappoint_v the_o device_n of_o the_o crafty_a so_o that_o their_o hand_n can_v perform_v their_o enterprise_n and_o there_o be_v none_o that_o can_v control_v he_o or_o hinder_v he_o in_o his_o death_n not_o only_o from_o the_o domineer_a prevalency_n but_o the_o disquiet_v presence_n of_o they_o now_o the_o word_n lie_v open_a to_o view_v you_o have_v a_o most_o fair_a prospect_n of_o great_a and_o sweet_a variety_n which_o natural_o spring_v up_o out_o of_o this_o most_o fruitful_a field_n that_o if_o dig_v and_o search_v will_v yield_v very_o holy_a meditation_n and_o discourse_n concern_v this_o scripture_n i_o may_v say_v true_o in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n when_o he_o be_v comfort_v timorous_a soul_n under_o their_o fear_n of_o judgement_n and_o so_o very_o pertinent_o to_o my_o business_n in_o hand_n behold_v here_o how_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n himself_o and_o god_n even_o our_o father_n who_o have_v love_v we_o and_o give_v we_o everlasting_a consolation_n and_o good_a hope_n through_o grace_n do_v here_o comfort_v your_o heart_n by_o the_o most_o warm_a breathe_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o comforter_n who_o indeed_o be_v then_o a_o comforter_n when_o all_o else_o be_v but_o miserable_a one_o his_o cordial_n here_o be_v very_o singular_a and_o sovereign_a the_o ingredient_n very_o precious_a and_o various_a and_o not_o a_o little_a conspicuous_a in_o these_o follow_a doctrine_n some_o of_o which_o be_v raise_v from_o the_o fourteen_o verse_n immediate_o precede_v my_o text_n some_o from_o both_o verse_n together_o and_o some_o from_o the_o text_n itself_o only_o 1._o the_o fourteen_o verse_n exhibit_v to_o you_o these_o seven_o doctrine_n first_o that_o the_o unconceivable_a love_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n to_o his_o dear_a child_n make_v he_o come_v down_o on_o earth_n and_o become_v man_n second_o that_o christ_n in_o his_o humane_a nature_n be_v as_o very_a man_n as_o any_o of_o the_o elect_n his_o flesh_n and_o blood_n not_o only_o be_v like_o we_o but_o part_n of_o our_o substance_n he_o also_o himself_o likewise_o take_v part_n of_o the_o same_o so_o that_o he_o himself_o be_v of_o the_o same_o stock_n of_o adam_n and_o eve_n as_o sure_o and_o very_o as_o any_o of_o we_o three_o that_o sinner_n out_o of_o christ_n be_v under_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n such_o as_o be_v not_o god_n child_n be_v under_o the_o devil_n their_o father_n cruel_a severity_n that_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o death_n or_o that_o satan_n have_v the_o power_n of_o death_n over_o all_o such_o as_o be_v not_o deliver_v by_o christ_n from_o his_o power_n four_o that_o christ_n have_v destroy_v this_o his_o power_n for_o the_o sole_a benefit_n of_o his_o child_n true_a believer_n five_o that_o the_o way_n how_o christ_n overcome_v satan_n and_o destroy_v his_o power_n be_v by_o his_o own_o death_n or_o christ_n by_o his_o own_o death_n conquer_v that_o tyrant_n the_o devil_n which_o destruction_n of_o the_o devil_n by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n because_o allege_v here_o by_o the_o apostle_n as_o christ_n intermediate_v end_n in_o subserviency_n to_o his_o grand_a design_n of_o deliver_v his_o child_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n i_o shall_v only_o a_o little_a pause_n upon_o the_o devil_n be_v no_o soon_o our_o enemy_n but_o christ_n be_v his_o the_o devil_n say_v to_o our_o first_o parent_n you_o shall_v not_o sure_o die_v but_o christ_n only_o make_v it_o good_a though_o the_o devil_n mean_v nothing_o less_o yet_o christ_n nothing_o more_o see_v the_o devil_n in_o his_o colour_n first_o he_o tempt_v to_o sin_n with_o a_o sure_o thou_o shall_v not_o die_v and_o yet_o present_o upon_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n he_o torment_v with_o a_o sure_o thou_o shall_v repeal_n or_o in_o the_o one_o he_o lie_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n threat_n and_o the_o condemn_a power_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o other_o against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n promise_n and_o of_o his_o incomparable_o glorious_a act_n of_o indemnity_n he_o think_v indeed_o see_v he_o can_v not_o be_v exalt_v above_o god_n he_o will_v become_v a_o petty_a tyrant_n as_o his_o ambition_n thirst_v over_o poor_a mankind_n and_o thereupon_o labour_v to_o bring_v man_n by_o sin_n under_o his_o power_n the_o power_n of_o death_n but_o wherein_o he_o deal_v proud_o christ_n be_v above_o he_o christ_n in_o man_n nature_n dye_v for_o man_n so_o that_o though_o in_o as_o much_o as_o christ_n die_v the_o devil_n bruise_v his_o heel_n yet_o christ_n by_o his_o own_o death_n defeat_v his_o design_n and_o bruise_v his_o serpent-head_n which_o he_o will_v not_o be_v able_a to_o get_v heal_v for_o ever_o whereas_o christ_n only_o be_v dead_a but_o be_v alive_a and_o life_n for_o evermore_o as_o before_o by_o death_n to_o vanquish_v he_o so_o eternal_o by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o life_n and_o reign_n to_o keep_v he_o under_o in_o chain_n of_o darkness_n and_o also_o to_o deliver_v his_o child_n from_o his_o power_n of_o death_n who_o though_o they_o sleep_v yet_o shall_v wake_v again_o eternal_o sixthly_a that_o christ_n death_n conquer_v the_o saint_n death_n even_o the_o power_n of_o it_o lie_v much_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v destroy_v with_o he_o death_n be_v our_o enemy_n christ_n encounter_v it_o for_o we_o in_o our_o stead_n verse_n 9_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o jesus_n say_v thus_o that_o he_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n shall_v taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n for_o he_o he_o conquer_v our_o enemy_n death_n by_o die_v by_o bear_v and_o so_o break_v off_o from_o we_o all_o its_o malignant_a force_n that_o it_o can_v reach_v we_o therewith_o when_o it_o ruffle_n most_o it_o be_v our_o last_o enemy_n but_o already_o up_o its_o self_n and_o grin_v upon_o a_o die_a saint_n yet_o behold_v all_o its_o venome-teeth_n be_v dash_v out_o by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n and_o its_o sting_n to_o seek_v it_o lay_v only_o upon_o he_o a_o cold_a and_o feeble_a hand_n but_o can_v break_v a_o bone_n as_o i_o may_v say_v not_o do_v the_o least_o hurt_n it_o only_a rock_n the_o body_n asleep_o and_o make_v way_n for_o the_o soul_n to_o enter_v into_o its_o master_n joy_n unspeakable_a indeed_o and_o full_a of_o glory_n as_o the_o devil_n who_o christ_n rebuke_v in_o the_o possess_v tear_v and_o rend_v the_o body_n it_o be_v true_a yet_o dare_v not_o but_o come_v forth_o and_o depart_v and_o though_o the_o body_n be_v leave_v on_o the_o ground_n as_o dead_a yet_o it_o quick_o appear_v to_o be_v alive_a so_o death_n may_v tear_v and_o shake_v a_o saint_n body_n at_o its_o dissolution_n and_o leave_v it_o for_o dead_a on_o the_o ground_n yet_o it_o have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v to_o touch_v it_o the_o very_a body_n as_o the_o grain_n sow_o in_o the_o earth_n be_v a_o spring_v up_o though_o at_o first_o flow_o with_o a_o new_a life_n i_o say_v the_o body_n shall_v in_o spite_n of_o death_n live_v again_o glorious_o at_o the_o resurrection_n and_o never_o die_v because_o death_n be_v conquer_v and_o destroy_v for_o ever_o by_o christ_n death_n who_o be_v dead_a but_o be_v alive_a for_o evermore_o amen_n neither_o be_v the_o saint_n sleep_v at_o their_o dissolution_n a_o bare_a piece_n of_o rhetoric_n but_o a_o most_o real_a notion_n wicked_a man_n body_n may_v be_v say_v indeed_o most_o proper_o to_o suffer_v death_n for_o though_o they_o also_o shall_v rise_v again_o yet_o it_o be_v to_o lead_v a_o life_n in_o those_o raise_a body_n worse_a than_o death_n but_o
it_o be_v but_o little_a or_o indeed_o nothing_o he_o can_v say_v to_o a_o believer_n here_o the_o saint_n have_v advantage_n of_o ground_n give_v he_o against_o the_o devil_n for_o never_o be_v the_o law_n more_o break_v than_o christ_n life_n fulfil_v it_o and_o never_o can_v the_o penalty_n thereof_o be_v so_o full_o suffer_v as_o it_o be_v by_o christ_n death_n that_o pay_v the_o uttermost_a farthing_n which_o the_o damned'_n torment_n shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o do_v six_o christ_n be_v the_o deliverer_n of_o his_o people_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n in_o as_o much_o as_o he_o and_o by_o what_o grace_n or_o comfort_n i_o have_v determine_v to_o show_v in_o the_o second_o part_n of_o my_o method_n i_o shall_v therefore_o now_o only_o add_v that_o christ_n administer_v a_o that_o they_o be_v surprise_v not_o only_o with_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n but_o with_o sudden_a death_n itself_o oh_o shake_v your_o conscience_n rouse_v they_o up_o to_o discharge_v their_o which_o trouble_v your_o peace_n and_o provoke_v god_n to_o leave_v you_o to_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n find_v it_o out_o labour_n for_o the_o assistance_n of_o christ_n spirit_n for_o one_o look_v from_o christ_n for_o one_o manifestation_n of_o god_n love_n that_o may_v break_v your_o heart_n and_o make_v you_o weep_v bitter_o repent_v and_o grieve_v thorough_o thus_o shall_v not_o sin_v
