be_v not_o word_n of_o boast_v and_o vanity_n and_o ostentation_n and_o carnal_a rejoice_v but_o the_o word_n of_o soberness_n and_o piety_n and_o discretion_n and_o there_o be_v divers_a thing_n intend_v by_o they_o first_o he_o will_v make_v it_o a_o argument_n for_o patience_n the_o escape_v great_a evil_n shall_v breed_v contentation_n under_o less_o that_o as_o god_n afflict_v we_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o a_o nation_n and_o god_n take_v they_o away_o also_o upon_o the_o same_o provocation_n of_o he_o there_o be_v nothing_o which_o any_o people_n can_v hold_v to_o and_o strong_a hold_n ordnance_z and_o ammunition_n ship_n and_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o it_o the_o second_o be_v the_o person_n by_o who_o that_o be_v here_o express_v to_o be_v stranger_n this_o have_v another_o emphasis_n of_o aggravation_n the_o suffering_n of_o a_o nation_n from_o stranger_n be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o grievous_a than_o those_o which_o be_v among_o themselves_o though_o in_o some_o respect_n homebred_a contention_n may_v be_v worse_o than_o foreign_a yet_o in_o other_o and_o in_o more_o be_v those_o of_o stranger_n worse_o than_o those_o which_o be_v domeâ—iques_n and_o so_o to_o be_v account_v thus_o the_o scripture_n also_o set_v it_o and_o deliver_v it_o to_o we_o therefore_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o prophet_n david_n twice_o together_o in_o one_o psalm_n desire_v to_o be_v keep_v from_o such_o psal_n 144.7_o rid_v i_o and_o deliver_v i_o from_o great_a water_n from_o the_o hand_n of_o strange_a child_n and_o present_o again_o in_o ver_fw-la 11._o the_o relation_n of_o country_n it_o may_v be_v of_o kindred_n and_o alliance_n which_o have_v a_o curb_n and_o restraint_n with_o it_o but_o where_o they_o be_v stranger_n there_o be_v none_o of_o these_o restraint_n there_o want_v those_o bowel_n and_o pitifulness_n and_o compassion_n which_o in_o the_o other_o sometime_o show_v itself_o as_o therefore_o david_n say_v let_v we_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n rather_o than_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n so_o we_o may_v say_v let_v we_o fall_v rather_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o man_n at_o home_n than_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o stranger_n which_o have_v a_o aggravation_n of_o enmity_n from_o their_o condition_n again_o as_o it_o be_v aggravate_v from_o the_o actor_n of_o this_o enmity_n so_o likewise_o from_o the_o sufferer_n of_o it_o also_o who_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o content_a usual_o to_o part_v with_o that_o which_o they_o have_v to_o those_o which_o be_v neighbour_n or_o of_o their_o own_o nation_n than_o to_o those_o which_o be_v stranger_n as_o that_o which_o be_v more_o easy_o regain_v and_o recover_v by_o they_o strength_n which_o be_v take_v away_o by_o stranger_n it_o be_v not_o so_o easy_o come_v to_o again_o as_o by_o near_a hand_n stranger_n in_o any_o land_n though_o they_o be_v friend_n may_v be_v burdensome_a enough_o to_o it_o and_o eat_v up_o the_o strength_n and_o satness_n of_o it_o but_o if_o enemy_n than_o so_o especial_o thus_o for_o the_o person_n but_o three_o here_o be_v a_o emphasis_n also_o in_o the_o manner_n and_o a_o very_a great_a one_o it_o be_v and_o that_o be_v devour_v we_o may_v not_o light_o pass_v over_o that_o which_o be_v very_o significant_a it_o be_v not_o stranger_n have_v simple_o take_v it_o away_o no_o but_o they_o have_v moreover_o devour_v it_o which_o be_v a_o take_v away_o in_o a_o extraordinary_a fashion_n and_o with_o some_o kind_n of_o extremity_n and_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n especial_o signify_v and_o employ_v in_o it_o first_o greediness_n and_o vehemency_n of_o desire_n he_o that_o devour_v any_o thing_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n he_o be_v very_o cage_a upon_o it_o and_o have_v a_o great_a mind_n the_o great_a the_o deliverance_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o preservation_n be_v increase_v from_o the_o fear_n of_o miscarriage_n even_o so_o be_v it_o also_o here_o in_o matter_n of_o good_a the_o near_a be_v the_o mercy_n the_o great_a be_v the_o disappointment_n and_o the_o grief_n of_o deprivation_n be_v aggravate_v from_o the_o hope_n of_o success_n and_o then_o again_o further_o there_o which_o have_v such_o sad_a and_o dangerous_a consequence_n attend_v upon_o they_o remember_v once_o again_o how_o it_o happen_v even_o to_o moses_n himself_o a_o man_n of_o so_o much_o cummunion_n with_o god_n yet_o how_o he_o smart_v for_o his_o unbelief_n god_n give_v he_o the_o sight_n of_o canaan_n but_o not_o the_o admission_n and_o likewise_o some_o other_o he_o destroy_v they_o even_o then_o upon_o the_o border_n let_v we_o take_v heed_n least_o ourselves_o fall_v after_o the_o same_o example_n of_o unbelief_n heb._n 4.11_o and_o let_v we_o be_v heedful_a so_o much_o the_o more_o as_o we_o be_v common_o lest_o suspicious_a of_o ourselves_o in_o this_o particular_a for_o every_o one_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v that_o he_o believe_v god_n power_n and_o truth_n till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n what_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n too_o hard_o for_o the_o lord_n no_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o will_v offer_v to_o say_v so_o in_o plain_a term_n or_o in_o the_o general_n proposition_n will_v not_o god_n be_v as_o good_a as_o his_o word_n yes_o who_o doubt_v of_o it_o till_o it_o come_v to_o such_o a_o particular_a occaston_n and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n and_o then_o there_o be_v too_o frequent_o a_o question_n of_o god_n power_n and_o truth_n both_o together_o then_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v window_n in_o heaven_n yet_o this_o thing_n can_v not_o be_v we_o can_v believe_v god_n it_o may_v be_v in_o easy_a matter_n but_o we_o can_v believe_v he_o in_o difficult_a believe_v he_o in_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v obvious_a and_o open_a to_o every_o eye_n but_o not_o believe_v he_o in_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v more_o obscure_a and_o remote_a and_o put_v out_o of_o sight_n whereas_o his_o power_n do_v reach_v even_o to_o these_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o and_o so_o likewise_o shall_v our_o faith_n the_o rather_o because_o of_o the_o danger_n which_o follow_v upon_o unbelief_n as_o we_o have_v now_o see_v in_o this_o instance_n before_o we_o which_o be_v to_o be_v keep_v from_o those_o mercy_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v and_o be_v almost_o enjoy_v look_v as_o those_o judgement_n which_o be_v threaten_v and_o yet_o not_o fear_v so_o much_o also_o of_o the_o second_o particular_a here_o observable_a viz._n the_o amplification_n of_o the_o evil_a multitude_n of_o thought_n the_o three_o be_v the_o subject_a of_o this_o grief_n and_o distemper_n and_o that_o be_v david_n himself_o my_o thought_n david_n a_o holy_a person_n a_o prophet_n of_o god_n a_o man_n after_o god_n own_o heart_n even_o he_o be_v exercise_v and_o afflict_v and_o trouble_v with_o this_o variety_n of_o distract_n thought_n from_o whence_o observe_v thus_o much_o that_o even_o the_o child_n of_o god_n themselves_o they_o be_v sometime_o trouble_v with_o anxious_a and_o solicitous_a thought_n and_o that_o also_o in_o a_o very_a great_a multitude_n and_o plurality_n of_o they_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o my_o thought_n say_v david_n it_o be_v a_o infinite_a thing_n to_o run_v over_o the_o several_a particular_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v of_o necessity_n fasten_v upon_o some_o general_a head_n which_o we_o may_v take_v for_o order_n the_o commonwealth_n all_o these_o several_a head_n do_v make_v up_o this_o multitude_n of_o thought_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n first_o i_o say_v they_o have_v multitude_n of_o thought_n as_o concern_v their_o own_o salvation_n and_o state_n and_o grace_n the_o child_n of_o god_n themselves_o they_o have_v now_o and_o then_o very_a great_a doubt_n and_o distraction_n and_o perplexity_n in_o their_o own_o mind_n in_o reference_n to_o this_o they_o be_v sometime_o at_o a_o loss_n with_o themselves_o as_o concern_v the_o apprehension_n of_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n towards_o they_o and_o their_o own_o interest_n in_o grace_n and_o future_a glory_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o this_o very_a person_n before_o we_o david_n himself_z as_o we_o may_v gather_v from_o his_o own_o complaint_n and_o request_n to_o this_o purpose_n in_o many_o place_n of_o the_o psalm_n more_o particular_o psal_n 13.1_o etc._n etc._n how_o long_o will_v thou_o forget_v i_o o_o lord_n for_o ever_o how_o long_o will_v thou_o hide_v thy_o face_n from_o i_o how_o long_o shall_v i_o take_v counsel_n in_o my_o soul_n have_v sorrow_n in_o my_o heart_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o psal_n 42.5_o why_o be_v thou_o cast_v down_o o_o my_o soul_n and_o why_o be_v thou_o disquiet_v within_o i_o etc._n etc._n and_o psal_n 51.8_o etc._n etc._n make_v i_o to_o hear_v joy_n and_o gladness_n that_o the_o bone_n and_o set_v a_o print_n upon_o his_o heel_n scare_v he_o with_o dream_n and_o terrify_v he_o with_o vision_n and_o many_o such_o like_a expression_n of_o disquietness_n as_o these_o be_v and_o so_o likewise_o that_o goodly_a man_n heman_n psal_n 88.14.15_o this_o be_v his_o case_n likewise_o lord_n why_o cast_v thou_o off_o my_o soul_n while_o i_o suffer_v thy_o terror_n i_o be_o distract_v of_o the_o revelation_n have_v therefore_o a_o messenger_n of_o satan_n send_v to_o buffet_v he_o and_o this_o as_o irksome_a and_o troublesome_a to_o he_o as_o a_o thorn_n in_o the_o flesh_n when_o the_o child_n begin_v to_o grow_v wanton_a the_o father_n hide_v his_o face_n from_o he_o that_o so_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o may_v bring_v he_o into_o a_o better_a order_n and_o frame_v again_o and_o own_o liberty_n and_o prerogative_n as_o the_o case_n seem_v to_o have_v be_v with_o job_n though_o more_o frequent_o this_o do_v proceed_v from_o the_o miscarriage_n of_o god_n child_n themselves_o who_o cause_n more_o troublesome_a thought_n to_o themselves_o than_o otherwise_o they_o need_v to_o do_v only_o from_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o default_n that_o which_o we_o may_v gather_v from_o this_o present_a observation_n to_o ourselves_o for_o our_o own_o improvement_n be_v from_o hence_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o over_o charge_v and_o lay_v too_o hard_a censure_n and_o load_v upon_o those_o who_o we_o see_v sometime_o to_o be_v in_o such_o condition_n as_o these_o be_v give_v they_o over_o as_o none_o of_o the_o child_n and_o people_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o which_o the_o world_n be_v too_o ready_a and_o forward_o to_o do_v when_o they_o observe_v any_o person_n to_o be_v follow_v with_o troublesome_a and_o disquiet_v thought_n and_o especial_o in_o reference_n to_o their_o salvation_n and_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n unto_o they_o to_o conclude_v they_o in_o a_o bad_a condition_n and_o not_o that_o which_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v but_o they_o do_v offend_v in_o so_o do_v and_o they_o do_v offend_v also_o as_o david_n express_v it_o in_o another_o place_n against_o the_o generation_n of_o his_o child_n psal_n 73.15_o we_o see_v here_o how_o david_n himself_o though_o a_o man_n of_o those_o high_a qualification_n and_o peculiar_a interest_n in_o god_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o free_v from_o these_o trouble_n nor_o the_o variety_n and_o plurality_n of_o they_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o my_o thought_n that_o be_v in_o this_o first_o explication_n of_o thought_n concern_v his_o own_o salvation_n and_o state_n in_o grace_n the_o second_o be_v with_o thought_n in_o reference_n to_o his_o own_o provision_n and_o preservation_n and_o affair_n in_o the_o world_n there_o be_v a_o multitude_n of_o thought_n in_o this_o particular_a which_o both_o david_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o god_n people_n be_v oftentimes_o subject_a unto_o first_o for_o provision_n what_o they_o shall_v eat_v and_o what_o they_o shall_v drink_v and_o what_o they_o shall_v put_v on_o many_o thought_n of_o distraction_n about_o this_o i_o say_v thought_n of_o distraction_n for_o as_o for_o thought_n of_o providence_n and_o sober_a and_o careful_a contrivance_n they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v no_o other_o than_o suitable_a and_o agreeable_a to_o they_o and_o be_v very_o warrantable_a in_o they_o but_o i_o say_v distract_n and_o perplex_v thought_n these_o be_v such_o as_o be_v very_o irregular_a and_o hurtful_a to_o they_o they_o may_v be_v very_o well_o bring_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o these_o bough-like_a thought_n and_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v in_o the_o language_n of_o scripture_n express_v and_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o by_o the_o name_n of_o thorn_n which_o choke_v the_o word_n that_o it_o become_v unfruitful_a matth._n 13.22_o these_o be_v such_o as_o our_o saviour_n do_v so_o labour_n to_o pluck_v up_o out_o of_o the_o mind_n of_o his_o disciple_n and_o in_o they_o of_o all_o of_o we_o matth._n 6.31_o therefore_o take_v no_o thought_n say_v what_o shall_v we_o eat_v or_o what_o shall_v we_o drink_v or_o wherewithal_o shall_v we_o be_v clothe_v and_o he_o use_v many_o argument_n to_o that_o purpose_n in_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o his_o people_n be_v observable_a in_o two_o contrary_a dispensation_n both_o in_o preserve_v their_o life_n to_o they_o and_o in_o take_v of_o their_o life_n from_o
