a_o sermon_n preach_v before_o the_o queen_n at_o white-hall_n february_n the_o fifteen_o 1690_o 1._o by_o henry_n dove_n d._n d._n chaplain_n to_o their_o majesty_n publish_a by_o her_o majesty_n special_a command_n london_n print_v by_o t._n m._n for_o robert_n clavel_n at_o the_o peacock_n in_o st._n paul_n church_n yard_n 1691._o a_o sermon_n preach_v before_o the_o queen_n psal_n 18._o 23._o and_o i_o keep_v myself_o from_o my_o iniquity_n this_o psalm_n contain_v a_o general_a thanksgiving_n which_o david_n make_v unto_o god_n after_o he_o have_v deliver_v he_o from_o his_o potent_a enemy_n but_o especial_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o saul_n who_o be_v the_o most_o furious_a and_o implacable_a of_o all_o his_o adversary_n and_o here_o as_o he_o ascribe_v his_o deliverance_n whole_o to_o the_o divine_a goodness_n so_o he_o comfort_v himself_o in_o his_o innocency_n and_o integrity_n and_o ascribe_v that_o also_o to_o god_n restrain_v and_o assist_v grace_n which_o keep_v he_o back_o from_o that_o iniquity_n to_o which_o he_o be_v strong_o tempt_v and_o do_v not_o suffer_v he_o to_o do_v as_o the_o wicked_a will_v have_v do_v in_o the_o like_a case_n what_o that_o particular_a case_n and_o sin_n be_v be_v not_o here_o mention_v but_o if_o we_o consult_v the_o history_n of_o his_o life_n it_o seem_v to_o refer_v to_o that_o know_a instance_n when_o saul_n fall_v into_o his_o hand_n at_o engedi_n so_o that_o he_o can_v as_o easy_o have_v slay_v 4._o 1_o sam._n 24._o 4._o he_o as_o he_o cut_v off_o the_o skirt_n of_o his_o garment_n and_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o do_v such_o a_o unlawful_a and_o wicked_a act_n no_o not_o to_o save_v his_o life_n and_o he_o give_v the_o reason_n in_o the_o word_n before_o my_o text_n for_o i_o have_v keep_v the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n 22._o ver._n 21._o 22._o and_o have_v not_o wicked_o depart_v from_o my_o god_n for_o all_o his_o judgement_n be_v before_o i_o and_o i_o do_v not_o put_v away_o his_o statute_n from_o i_o as_o though_o he_o have_v say_v i_o have_v more_o regard_n to_o god_n righteous_a law_n than_o to_o my_o private_a interest_n and_o when_o i_o have_v a_o fair_a opportunity_n of_o put_v a_o end_n to_o all_o my_o trouble_n i_o choose_v rather_o to_o suffer_v than_o to_o do_v evil_a have_v i_o consult_v flesh_n and_o blood_n or_o the_o dictate_v of_o a_o revengeful_a spirit_n i_o can_v easy_o have_v secure_v my_o own_o by_o take_v away_o his_o life_n but_o i_o have_v rather_o venture_v the_o utmost_a effect_n of_o saul_n hatred_n than_o incur_v the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n my_o great_a deliverer_n and_o defender_n the_o fear_n of_o that_o can_v not_o make_v i_o forgo_v the_o fear_n of_o he_o and_o therefore_o though_o i_o can_v not_o hinder_v saul_n yet_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n restrain_v i_o i_o keep_v myself_o from_o my_o iniquity_n from_o my_o iniquity_n that_o be_v from_o the_o sin_n to_o which_o i_o be_v strong_o tempt_v for_o some_o say_v he_o afterward_o to_o saul_n himself_o bid_v i_o kill_v thou_o 10._o 1_o sam._n 24._o 10._o and_o which_o i_o be_v also_o prone_a to_o fall_v into_o have_v not_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n keep_v i_o back_o for_o so_o the_o chaldee_n paraphra_v explain_v the_o whole_a verse_n i_o be_v perfect_a in_o his_o fear_n and_o he_o be_v the_o saviour_n of_o my_o soul_n from_o sin_n and_o from_o iniquity_n the_o word_n thus_o open_v and_o explain_v will_v afford_v we_o many_o useful_a point_n both_o for_o our_o instruction_n and_o our_o practice_n the_o chief_a of_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o speak_v to_o under_o these_o three_o head_n which_o seem_v to_o comprise_v their_o main_a importance_n 1._o that_o there_o be_v some_o particular_a sin_n which_o every_o one_o may_v call_v in_o a_o more_o peculiar_a manner_n his_o own_o iniquity_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o keep_v ourselves_o from_o such_o sin_n as_o david_n do_v by_o use_v the_o mean_n which_o david_n use_v 3._o what_o help_v and_o direction_n be_v needful_a for_o this_o purpose_n that_o so_o we_o may_v learn_v to_o maintain_v our_o integrity_n and_o keep_v ourselves_o from_o those_o sin_n to_o which_o we_o be_v most_o inclineable_a first_o there_o be_v some_o particular_a sin_n to_o which_o every_o one_o be_v more_o prone_a than_o to_o another_o of_o which_o he_o may_v say_v by_o way_n of_o emphasis_n it_o be_v my_o iniquity_n at_o which_o he_o may_v point_v with_o his_o finger_n and_o say_v that_o be_v it_o but_o what_o that_o be_v as_o it_o be_v certain_o know_v to_o god_n who_o search_v our_o heart_n and_o spy_v out_o all_o our_o way_n so_o may_v every_o man_n likewise_o know_v it_o himself_o by_o commune_v with_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o 7._o psal_n 4._o 4._o hag._n 1._o 5._o 7._o consider_v his_o way_n by_o look_v into_o his_o own_o breast_n and_o impartial_o examine_v his_o own_o conscience_n by_o lay_v his_o life_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o conscience_n and_o measure_v his_o conscience_n by_o the_o rule_n of_o god_n law_n this_o be_v the_o best_a examiner_n and_o informer_n too_o a_o faithful_a witness_n and_o a_o most_o uncorrupt_a judge_n which_o will_v easy_o discover_v and_o arraign_v convict_v and_o condemn_v the_o criminal_a maugre_o all_o endeavour_n to_o bribe_v or_o stifle_v the_o evidence_n this_o must_v needs_o find_v out_o the_o sin_n to_o which_o it_o be_v always_o privy_a and_o a_o man_n be_v own_o heart_n can_v choose_v but_o tell_v he_o what_o he_o love_v best_o and_o what_o he_o be_v most_o addict_v to_o that_o therefore_o there_o be_v great_a proclivity_n in_o every_o one_o to_o some_o peculiar_a sin_n be_v sufficient_o evident_a from_o every_o man_n private_a conscience_n but_o how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o so_o it_o be_v beside_o the_o general_a corruption_n of_o our_o nature_n which_o be_v common_a to_o we_o all_o will_v be_v further_o manifest_v from_o these_o follow_a consideration_n i._o we_o be_v more_o inclineable_a to_o some_o sin_n than_o other_o through_o our_o natural_a temper_n and_o complexion_n for_o though_o the_o first_o principle_n whereof_o we_o all_o consist_v i_o mean_v the_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v vast_o different_a in_o their_o first_o frame_n and_o make_v the_o one_o be_v heavenly_a the_o other_o earthy_a yet_o such_o be_v their_o near_a conjunction_n while_o we_o be_v in_o the_o body_n that_o they_o strong_o influence_n one_o another_o the_o corruptible_a body_n 15._o wisd_v 9_o 15._o press_v down_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o earthly_a tabernacle_n weigh_v down_o the_o mind_n say_v solomon_n wisd_v 9_o 15._o and_o such_o be_v the_o predominancy_n of_o some_o element_n and_o humour_n to_o which_o the_o naturalist_n ascribe_v the_o diversity_n of_o constitution_n that_o from_o thence_o also_o the_o moralist_n derive_v the_o different_a temper_n of_o man_n mind_n and_o inclination_n thus_o the_o sanguine_a incline_v most_o to_o lust_n and_o wantonness_n incontinence_n and_o intemperance_n the_o choleric_a to_o anger_n and_o passion_n pride_n and_o contention_n the_o melancholic_a to_o envy_n discontent_n distrust_n and_o despair_n the_o phlegmatic_a to_o covetousness_n and_o idleness_n and_o lukewarmness_n in_o religion_n so_o that_o according_a to_o the_o different_a constitution_n of_o man_n body_n there_o arise_v different_a inclination_n in_o their_o soul_n and_o mind_n and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a business_n of_o reason_n to_o find_v out_o and_o restrain_v so_o it_o be_v the_o great_a work_n of_o grace_n and_o religion_n to_o subdue_v and_o mortify_v the_o predominant_a passion_n from_o whence_o ii_o we_o may_v further_o observe_v that_o at_o some_o certain_a period_n of_o our_o life_n we_o be_v more_o inclineable_a to_o some_o sin_n than_o other_o that_o every_o age_n of_o humane_a life_n have_v some_o peculiar_a darling_n that_o common_o bear_v the_o sway_n thus_o in_o old_a age_n man_n general_o be_v prone_a to_o such_o as_o most_o conduce_v to_o their_o temporal_a advantage_n in_o the_o world_n to_o hoard_v and_o heap_v up_o riches_n when_o they_o least_o need_v they_o and_o when_o they_o be_v just_o leave_v the_o world_n they_o be_v common_o most_o solicitous_a about_o it_o in_o our_o youth_n to_o such_o as_o most_o gratify_v our_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o promote_v our_o pleasure_n let_v loose_a the_o reins_o to_o every_o inordinate_a affection_n and_o rush_v headlong_o to_o sin_n and_o folly_n then_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v covetous_a and_o by_o consequence_n crafty_a and_o deceitful_a and_o unjust_a and_o now_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v riotous_a and_o disorderly_a impatient_a of_o reproof_n and_o heedless_a of_o instruction_n then_o self-ended_n and_o now_o self-willed_a then_o gripe_v and_o now_o profuse_a then_o cark_n and_o care_v as_o though_o we_o dream_v of_o a_o immortality_n upon_o earth_n
