A28440 King William and Queen Mary, conquerors, or, A discourse endeavouring to prove that Their Majesties have on their side, against the late king, the principal reasons that make conquest a good title shewing also how this is consistent with that declaration of Parliament, King James abdicated the government, &c. : written with an especial regard to such as have hitherto refused the oath, and yet incline to allow of the title of conquest, when consequent to a just war. puissant_a army_n to_o salisbury_n mean_v that_o way_n and_o no_o other_o to_o give_v the_o prince_n satisfaction_n and_o now_o i_o desire_v the_o reader_n to_o consider_v that_o from_o the_o time_n that_o the_o king_n decline_v the_o decision_n of_o a_o parliament_n declare_v the_o prince_n a_o enemy_n and_o march_v down_o against_o he_o in_o hostile_a manner_n the_o prince_n have_v a_o just_a ground_n of_o war_n against_o he_o certain_o no_o man_n can_v doubt_v this_o who_o consider_v what_o have_v be_v say_v and_o prove_v of_o the_o king_n be_v have_v give_v the_o prince_n just_a cause_n of_o suspicion_n that_o he_o have_v great_o injure_v he_o of_o his_o deny_v he_o satisfaction_n of_o his_o declare_v he_o a_o enemy_n and_o of_o his_o march_v down_o against_o he_o as_o such_o but_o perhaps_o some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o object_n that_o the_o object_n prince_n begin_v the_o war_n by_o come_v over_o into_o england_n with_o a_o arm_a power_n he_o may_v have_v stay_v in_o holland_n or_o have_v come_v without_o a_o army_n and_o then_o he_o may_v have_v have_v satisfaction_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v 1._o that_o the_o prince_n utter_o disclaim_v answ._n any_o design_n of_o war_a upon_o the_o king_n he_o declare_v only_o for_o a_o free_a parliament_n to_o the_o which_o he_o promise_v to_o refer_v all_o matter_n in_o dispute_n and_o his_o sincerity_n be_v so_o universal_o believe_v that_o the_o whole_a nation_n except_o such_o who_o crime_n have_v make_v the_o contrary_a their_o interest_n beseech_v the_o king_n to_o yield_v to_o his_o demand_n promise_v that_o as_o soon_o as_o the_o state_n of_o the_o nation_n will_v admit_v of_o it_o he_o will_v send_v back_o all_o his_o foreign_a force_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n keep_v they_o under_o such_o strictness_n of_o martial_a discipline_n that_o the_o people_n of_o the_o country_n through_o which_o they_o be_v to_o march_v shall_v not_o suffer_v by_o their_o mean_n 2._o that_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o show_n of_o reason_n that_o if_o either_o the_o prince_n have_v stay_v in_o holland_n or_o have_v come_v over_o unarm_v the_o king_n will_v have_v call_v a_o parliament_n that_o shall_v have_v be_v free_a much_o less_o that_o he_o will_v have_v suffer_v they_o to_o inquire_v into_o the_o birth_n of_o the_o child_n he_o that_o will_v leave_v the_o nation_n rather_o than_o yield_v to_o these_o thing_n will_v never_o have_v do_v it_o when_o he_o be_v under_o no_o such_o necessity_n if_o it_o be_v say_v the_o prince_n shall_v first_o have_v try_v he_o i_o answer_v that_o have_v be_v to_o alarm_n he_o and_o the_o french_a king_n and_o so_o to_o have_v make_v it_o utter_o impossible_a to_o have_v gain_v satisfaction_n the_o state_n of_o europe_n at_o that_o time_n be_v know_v to_o have_v be_v such_o as_o that_o secrecy_n and_o expedition_n be_v two_o thing_n without_o which_o the_o prince_n can_v never_o have_v carry_v his_o point_n and_o upon_o both_o these_o account_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v make_v his_o very_a first_o demand_v of_o satisfaction_n with_o his_o sword_n in_o his_o hand_n and_o if_o it_o be_v necessary_a than_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o since_o it_o be_v through_o the_o king_n fault_n that_o the_o matter_n be_v become_v doubtful_a it_o be_v lawful_a for_o the_o prince_n to_o do_v what_o be_v necessary_a to_o his_o gain_v satisfaction_n so_o that_o notwithstanding_o these_o objection_n i_o conclude_v for_o the_o reason_n mention_v that_o k._n william_n and_o q._n mary_n have_v a_o just_a ground_n of_o war_n against_o k._n james_n which_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n i_o undertake_v to_o prove_v sect_n ii_o their_o mnjesty_n k._n william_n and_o q._n marry_o conquer_v k._n james_n the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v prove_v be_v that_o the_o prince_n and_o princess_n of_o orange_n our_o present_a sovereign_n conquer_v k._n james_n in_o order_n to_o the_o make_n of_o this_o clear_a it_o will_v be_v requisite_a to_o lay_v before_o the_o reader_n matter_n of_o fact_n that_o so_o it_o may_v appear_v they_o be_v actual_o in_o a_o state_n of_o war_n with_o the_o king_n and_o what_o their_o success_n thereupon_o be_v i_o shall_v still_o make_v use_n of_o the_o history_n of_o the_o desertion_n as_o i_o have_v hitherto_o do_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o matter_n of_o fact_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o to_o be_v write_v with_o great_a judgement_n and_o have_v i_o thankful_o own_o contribute_v more_o to_o my_o satisfaction_n as_o to_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o pay_v allegiance_n to_o their_o present_a majesty_n than_o any_o one_o tract_n that_o i_o have_v meet_v with_o on_o the_o subject_a however_o the_o substance_n of_o what_o i_o quote_v from_o it_o be_v know_v to_o be_v true_a it_o have_v already_o be_v observe_v that_o k._n james_n decline_v the_o decision_n of_o a_o parliament_n that_o he_o declare_v the_o prince_n a_o enemy_n and_o that_o at_o salisbury_n he_o put_v himself_o at_o the_o head_n of_o a_o puissant_a army_n now_o with_o what_o success_n remain_v to_o be_v consider_v november_n 20_o there_o happen_v a_o skirmsish_n at_o wincanton_n between_o a_o detachment_n of_o 70_o horse_n and_o 50_o dragoon_n and_o granadier_n command_v by_o sarssield_n 76._o and_o about_o 30_o of_o the_o prince_n of_o orange_n man_n command_v by_o one_o cambel_n where_o say_v my_o author_n notwithstanding_o the_o great_a inequality_n of_o the_o number_n the_o latter_a fight_v with_o that_o desperate_a bravery_n that_o it_o strike_v a_o terror_n into_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o army_n at_o salisbary_n the_o king_n be_v desert_v by_o part_n of_o his_o army_n as_o he_o have_v be_v before_o his_o leave_v whitehall_n by_o the_o lord_n cornbury_n and_o such_o as_o will_v follow_v he_o particular_o by_o the_o duke_n of_o grafton_n and_o the_o lord_n 79._o churchil_n and_o either_o there_o or_o at_o andover_n by_o prince_n george_n of_o denmark_n himself_n upon_o which_o the_o king_n and_o his_o army_n be_v so_o dishearten_v that_o upon_o a_o false_a alarm_n make_v either_o with_o design_n or_o by_o accident_n on_o the_o 25_o of_o november_n they_o leave_v salisbury_n the_o army_n retreat_v 82._o to_o read_v and_o the_o king_n to_o andover_n and_o on_o the_o 26_o in_o the_o evening_n he_o return_v to_o london_n the_o army_n at_o read_v upon_o another_o false_a alarm_n on_o the_o 8_o of_o december_n retire_v in_o great_a haste_n to_o twiford-bridg_n and_o endeavour_v to_o regain_v their_o post_n a_o party_n of_o the_o prince_n man_n who_o be_v send_v for_o by_o the_o 89._o inhabitant_n of_o read_v upon_o their_o threaten_a to_o plunder_v and_o fire_v the_o town_n attack_v the_o irish_a dragoon_n and_o slay_v sifty_a of_o they_o the_o king_n be_v return_v to_o london_n and_o have_v how_o no_o long_a any_o confidence_n in_o that_o way_n of_o decide_v the_o dispute_n that_o he_o himself_o have_v choose_v on_o the_o 28_o of_o november_n in_o a_o privy-council_n order_v the_o 92._o lord-chancellor_n to_o issue_v out_o writ_n for_o the_o sit_v of_o a_o parliament_n on_o the_o 15_o day_n of_o january_n follow_v but_o the_o reader_n must_v observe_v that_o this_o be_v not_o do_v until_o he_o be_v force_v to_o it_o and_o therefore_o the_o prince_n be_v now_o no_o long_o under_o any_o obligation_n to_o the_o king_n of_o stand_v to_o the_o decision_n of_o a_o parliament_n he_o may_v have_v he_o please_v without_o any_o injustice_n with_o respect_n to_o he_o have_v make_v use_n of_o his_o good_a fortune_n and_o pursue_v the_o advantage_n he_o have_v gain_v which_o must_v in_o all_o likelihood_n have_v end_v in_o victory_n the_o earl_n of_o feversham_n the_o king_n general_n not_o have_v with_o he_o at_o that_o time_n 93._o above_o four_o thousand_o men._n but_o yet_o such_o be_v his_o moderation_n that_o upon_o the_o king_n be_v send_v the_o lord_n hallifax_v nottingham_n and_o godolphin_n to_o treat_v with_o he_o and_o to_o adjust_a preliminary_n to_o the_o hold_v of_o a_o parliament_n he_o with_o the_o advice_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o gentleman_n of_o his_o party_n accept_v the_o motion_n and_o as_o thing_n than_o stand_v return_v a_o most_o reasonable_a answer_n the_o which_o be_v send_v to_o the_o king_n before_o his_o first_o attempt_n to_o withdraw_v himself_o out_o of_o the_o 92._o nation_n and_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o alter_v his_o resolution_n to_o do_v it_o it_o be_v send_v to_o his_o majesty_n by_o a_o express_a and_o yet_o he_o resolve_v to_o leave_v the_o town_n and_o order_v all_o those_o writ_n for_o the_o sit_v of_o the_o parliament_n that_o be_v not_o send_v out_o to_o be_v burn_v and_o a_o caveat_n to_o be_v enter_v against_o the_o make_n use_n of_o those_o that_o be_v and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n he_o send_v order_n to_o the_o earl_n of_o feversham_n to_o
disband_v the_o army_n and_o dismiss_v the_o soldier_n which_o be_v according_o do_v tell_v he_o in_o 92._o his_o letter_n that_o thing_n be_v come_v to_o that_o extremity_n that_o he_o have_v be_v force_v to_o send_v away_o the_o queen_n and_o his_o son_n that_o they_o may_v not_o fall_v into_o the_o enemy_n hand_n he_o himself_o be_v oblige_v to_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n and_o present_o after_o his_o majesty_n be_v take_v by_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o feversham_n in_o a_o small_a vessel_n endeavour_v to_o go_v out_o of_o the_o nation_n and_o after_o this_o it_o be_v manifest_v the_o prince_n never_o consider_v he_o as_o king_n of_o england_n but_o as_o his_o prisoner_n or_o as_o a_o person_n conquer_v it_o be_v true_a the_o lord_n invite_v he_o back_o to_o london_n but_o it_o be_v without_o the_o prince_n consent_n and_o in_o all_o likelihood_n without_o his_o knowledge_n for_o although_o he_o treat_v he_o with_o all_o imaginable_a respect_n as_o a_o person_n so_o near_o relate_v to_o himself_o and_o the_o princess_n and_o with_o a_o due_a regard_n to_o majesty_n with_o which_o he_o have_v be_v so_o late_o vest_v yet_o still_o it_o be_v but_o like_o a_o person_n conquer_v for_o understanding_n he_o be_v at_o rochester_n he_o send_v to_o he_o to_o continue_v there_o by_o mounseur_fw-fr zulestein_n but_o he_o miss_v of_o he_o he_o send_v another_o order_n after_o he_o to_o remove_v from_o whitehall_n whither_o he_o 101._o be_v go_v to_o ham._n the_o message_n be_v to_o be_v deliver_v by_o the_o marquis_n of_o hallifax_n the_o earl_n of_o shrewsbury_n and_o the_o lord_n delamere_n after_o the_o prince_n guard_n be_v in_o possession_n of_o the_o post_n about_o whitehall_n and_o a_o note_v draw_v up_o to_o that_o purpose_n likewise_o the_o prince_n commit_v the_o earl_n of_o feversham_n to_o the_o castle_n of_o windsor_n who_o have_v be_v send_v by_o ibid._n the_o king_n to_o invite_v he_o to_o st._n james_n and_o if_o he_o commit_v the_o servant_n to_o prison_n it_o be_v not_o hard_a to_o determine_v in_o what_o condition_n he_o judge_v the_o master_n to_o be_v prince_n do_v not_o use_v to_o imprison_v each_o other_o servant_n send_v on_o kind_a message_n while_o their_o master_n be_v free_a that_o be_v as_o king_n james_z in_o his_o reason_n for_o withdraw_a himself_o 105._o from_o rochester_n word_n it_o against_o the_o practice_n and_o law_n of_o nation_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v he_o consider_v he_o as_o a_o prince_n conquer_v by_o he_o and_o treat_v he_o according_o although_o with_o all_o imaginable_a respect_n and_o with_o great_a tenderness_n this_o be_v the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o such_o action_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n king_n james_n understand_v they_o and_o therefore_o he_o send_v to_o desire_v leave_n of_o the_o prince_n to_o return_v to_o rochester_n 104._o which_o be_v grant_v and_o in_o this_o sense_n he_o interpret_v they_o in_o his_o reason_n for_o withdraw_a himself_o from_o rochester_n for_o have_v mention_v they_o he_o add_v these_o memorable_a word_n i_o be_v bear_v free_a and_o i_o desire_v to_o 106._o continue_v so_o wherefore_o in_o his_o own_o opinion_n his_o go_v private_o from_o rochester_n into_o france_n be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o escape_n out_o of_o captivity_n or_o rather_o out_o of_o a_o conqueror_n hand_n who_o prisoner_n he_o be_v i_o insist_v the_o long_o upon_o these_o thing_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o such_o as_o own_o conquest_n upon_o a_o just_a quarrel_n to_o be_v a_o good_a title_n as_o indeed_o it_o be_v but_o say_v the_o prince_n do_v not_o make_v use_n of_o his_o fortune_n but_o decline_v it_o by_o leave_v the_o matter_n to_o the_o convention_n of_o which_o i_o shall_v say_v more_o hereafter_o when_o i_o come_v to_o answer_v objection_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n i_o will_v contract_v into_o a_o narrow_a compass_n what_o i_o have_v say_v at_o large_a that_o so_o the_o reader_n may_v at_o once_o take_v a_o view_n of_o it_o here_o be_v violent_a presumption_n of_o a_o unsufferable_a injury_n do_v to_o the_o prince_n and_o a_o refusal_n of_o give_v reasonable_a satisfaction_n to_o the_o last_o a_o march_v down_o with_o a_o army_n to_o oppose_v he_o when_o he_o come_v to_o examine_v the_o truth_n two_o battle_n fight_v how_o much_o blood_n spill_v it_o matter_n not_o in_o both_o which_o the_o prince_n have_v the_o better_a the_o king_n flee_v before_o the_o prince_n to_o london_n from_o thence_o towards_o gravesend_n go_v on_o board_v a_o vessel_n in_o order_n to_o leave_v the_o nation_n without_o depute_v a_o viceroy_n be_v bring_v back_o again_o but_o be_v use_v as_o he_o think_v like_o a_o prisoner_n make_v his_o escape_n a_o second_o time_n and_o leave_v the_o nation_n and_o now_o good_a reader_n do_v not_o deceive_v thyself_o nor_o suffer_v thyself_o to_o be_v impose_v upon_o by_o the_o little_a pretence_n of_o such_o man_n who_o interest_n it_o be_v never_o to_o be_v satisfy_v consider_v well_o and_o judge_v impartial_o what_o be_v there_o want_v in_o the_o case_n of_o king_n james_n to_o make_v it_o fall_v short_a of_o a_o conquest_n there_o can_v be_v no_o objection_n against_o this_o as_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o of_o any_o great_a moment_n however_o i_o will_v not_o pass_v by_o unanswered_a any_o scruple_n that_o i_o can_v foresee_v and_o much_o less_o any_o objection_n that_o i_o know_v have_v be_v make_v in_o the_o one_a place_n it_o have_v be_v say_v the_o prince_n by_o his_o fair_a object_n pretence_n in_o his_o declaration_n steal_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o majesty_n subject_n and_o soldier_n so_o that_o they_o forsake_v he_o and_o therefore_o he_o may_v be_v say_v rather_o to_o have_v be_v betray_v than_o conquer_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v two_o thing_n one_a that_o the_o prince_n declaration_n be_v most_o reasonable_a and_o think_v to_o be_v so_o by_o the_o most_o considerable_a both_o for_o learning_n and_o quality_n of_o those_o that_o now_o refuse_v the_o oath_n who_o therefore_o urge_v the_o king_n over_z and_o over_o to_o condescend_v without_o fight_v to_o his_o demand_n of_o refer_v all_o difference_n to_o a_o free_a parliament_n and_o since_o his_o majesty_n refusal_n be_v a_o refusal_n to_o give_v satisfaction_n about_o the_o right_n and_o liberty_n of_o the_o nation_n which_o have_v be_v infringe_v and_o about_o the_o succession_n to_o the_o crown_n which_o be_v suspect_v to_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o be_v alter_v it_o be_v more_o than_o any_o man_n can_v prove_v that_o the_o subject_n be_v bind_v to_o assist_v the_o king_n especial_o if_o we_o add_v that_o if_o he_o have_v get_v the_o victory_n it_o must_v in_o all_o probability_n have_v end_v in_o the_o utter_a subversion_n of_o our_o law_n and_o legal_a government_n and_o in_o the_o destruction_n of_o our_o right_n both_o civil_a and_o religious_a that_o subject_n may_v not_o resist_v the_o king_n although_o he_o endeavour_v their_o destruction_n unjust_o have_v be_v teach_v and_o that_o be_v loyalty_n enough_o in_o all_o reason_n but_o that_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o assist_v he_o to_o destroy_v the_o main_a body_n of_o a_o nation_n be_v such_o a_o notion_n of_o loyalty_n as_o will_v not_o down_o with_o wise_a men._n but_o two_o suppose_v the_o king_n have_v be_v unjust_o betray_v by_o his_o subject_n and_o soldier_n or_o desert_v by_o they_o who_o ought_v to_o have_v stand_v by_o he_o in_o the_o quarrel_n what_o be_v that_o to_o the_o prince_n who_o be_v none_o of_o the_o king_n be_v subject_a but_o a_o sovereign_a prince_n it_o behove_v the_o king_n to_o have_v assure_v himself_o of_o the_o loyalty_n and_o courage_n of_o his_o own_o soldier_n and_o people_n and_o if_o he_o do_v not_o and_o be_v therefore_o beat_v it_o be_v never_o the_o less_o a_o conquest_n over_o he_o because_o his_o man_n either_o will_v not_o or_o dare_v not_o fight_v for_o when_o prince_n take_v the_o field_n the_o question_n as_o to_o right_o of_o conquest_n be_v which_o overcome_v not_o whether_o his_o soldier_n that_o be_v overcome_v fight_v or_o not_o nor_o whether_o his_o subject_n adhere_v firm_o to_o he_o or_o not_o when_o henry_n duke_n of_o lancaster_n come_v into_o england_n and_o gather_v a_o army_n traitorous_o against_o his_o sovereign_n king_n richard_n the_o second_o who_o be_v then_o in_o ireland_n the_o king_n send_v the_o earl_n of_o salisbury_n before_o he_o into_o england_n to_o gather_v a_o army_n against_o his_o come_v over_o but_o stay_v long_o than_o the_o time_n by_o himself_o appoint_v the_o army_n will_v no_o long_o be_v keep_v together_o the_o king_n come_v over_o and_o find_v that_o they_o be_v disperse_v and_o hear_v that_o all_o the_o castle_n from_o the_o border_n of_o scotland_n and_o bristol_n be_v deliver_v to_o the_o duke_n and_o that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o
to_o he_o as_o a_o conqueror_n although_o he_o do_v not_o require_v i_o to_o swear_v on_o that_o ground_n and_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o justify_v my_o do_v of_o it_o that_o i_o know_v my_o former_a sovereign_n be_v unable_a to_o protect_v i_o and_o i_o to_o defend_v myself_o in_o my_o refusal_n and_o that_o he_o can_v be_v restore_v without_o great_a detriment_n to_o my_o country_n for_o as_o have_v be_v say_v the_o principal_a reason_n that_o make_v the_o title_n of_o conquest_n good_a be_v the_o same_o with_o the_o great_a end_n of_o government_n viz._n the_o good_a and_o safety_n of_o the_o community_n and_o consequent_o my_o own_o good_a and_o safety_n and_o not_o that_o it_o be_v claim_v or_o not_o claim_v by_o the_o victor_n 2._o i_o have_v already_o say_v that_o king_n william_n conquer_v king_n james_n but_o not_o the_o nation_n and_o therefore_o he_o acquire_v a_o title_n to_o all_o the_o right_n of_o king_n james_n but_o not_o to_o any_o of_o the_o right_n of_o the_o nation_n now_o k._n james_n have_v a_o right_a to_o govern_v these_o nation_n until_o by_o be_v conquer_v he_o lose_v it_o that_o right_o k._n william_n never_o give_v he_o back_o again_o but_o insist_v upon_o his_o right_n and_o conquest_n against_o he_o as_o appear_v by_o what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v of_o his_o treat_v he_o like_o a_o prisoner_n and_o i_o now_o add_v what_o be_v very_o material_a his_o refer_v it_o to_o the_o convention_n to_o settle_v the_o government_n this_o he_o can_v not_o do_v but_o upon_o a_o supposition_n that_o he_o have_v lose_v his_o right_n to_o it_o have_v he_o not_o claim_v against_o he_o as_o conqueror_n he_o must_v have_v leave_v he_o in_o possession_n of_o his_o dominion_n and_o this_o be_v so_o since_o he_o do_v not_o reinstate_v he_o he_o do_v not_o give_v he_o back_o his_o right_n but_o then_o the_o nation_n have_v also_o a_o right_n to_o their_o king_n and_o since_o king_n william_n as_o i_o have_v say_v do_v not_o conquer_v the_o nation_n nor_o ever_o have_v any_o quarrel_n against_o it_o he_o do_v not_o acquire_v a_o title_n to_o any_o of_o the_o right_n of_o the_o nation_n nor_o particular_o to_o that_o of_o be_v govern_v by_o k._n james_n wherefore_o he_o do_v what_o become_v a_o just_a prince_n in_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o nation_n be_v representatives_n whether_o they_o will_v be_v any_o long_o govern_v by_o he_o or_o no._n and_o they_o have_v give_v up_o their_o right_n to_o he_o and_o consent_v to_o accept_v our_o present_a sovereign_n and_o that_o their_o act_n be_v own_v by_o the_o major_a part_n of_o the_o people_n they_o have_v a_o undoubed_a right_n to_o the_o crown_n and_o consequent_o to_o the_o allegiance_n of_o the_o subject_a a_o right_n of_o conquest_n against_o king_n james_n and_o a_o right_n over_o the_o nation_n by_o her_o own_o consent_n which_o she_o can_v now_o recall_v and_o whether_o a_o man_n be_v of_o a_o opinion_n that_o the_o convention_n do_v well_o or_o ill_o in_o consent_v yet_o may_v he_o honest_o enough_o swear_v to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n because_o their_o title_n of_o conquest_n against_o k._n james_n still_o remain_v so_o far_o from_o be_v overthrow_v that_o it_o be_v rather_o establish_v by_o that_o act_n of_o the_o convention_n however_o 3._o their_o majesty_n by_o refer_v the_o matter_n to_o the_o convention_n and_o make_v use_n of_o their_o concurrence_n have_v no_o more_o prejudice_v their_o title_n of_o conquest_n than_o prince_n do_v by_o make_v use_n of_o such_o as_o they_o can_v draw_v to_o their_o party_n of_o their_o enemy_n soldier_n or_o subject_n to_o drive_v they_o either_o out_o of_o the_o whole_a or_o any_o part_n of_o their_o dominion_n but_o the_o convention_n do_v ill_o in_o give_v up_o their_o right_n object_n to_o their_o king_n and_o the_o nation_n do_v ill_o in_o own_v that_o their_o act_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o make_v all_o the_o recompense_n we_o can_v for_o what_o have_v be_v amiss_o by_o deny_v allegiance_n to_o the_o present_a power_n and_o do_v all_o we_o can_v to_o reinthrone_a our_o former_a sovereign_n 1._o i_o much_o question_n whether_o or_o no_o the_o conclusion_n answ._n follow_v from_o the_o premise_n suppose_v the_o convention_n do_v ill_o in_o give_v up_o their_o right_n to_o the_o king_n and_o the_o nation_n in_o own_v that_o their_o act_n i_o very_o much_o doubt_n whether_o it_o follow_v from_o thence_o that_o therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o deny_v allegiance_n to_o king_n w._n and_o queen_n m._n and_o to_o do_v all_o we_o can_v to_o restore_v k._n james_n for_o aught_o i_o know_v as_o thing_n now_o stand_v we_o may_v very_o well_o deny_v that_o consequence_n this_o be_v certain_a that_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v ill_o do_v must_v not_o afterward_o be_v undo_v but_o 2._o i_o deny_v that_o either_o the_o convention_n or_o the_o nation_n have_v in_o this_o do_v ill_o they_o give_v up_o no_o body_n right_o but_o their_o own_o k._n james_n be_v lose_v to_o the_o conqueror_n and_o certain_o the_o nation_n may_v if_o she_o please_v recede_v from_o she_o own_o right_n especial_o he_o have_v first_o abdicate_v and_o consequent_o give_v up_o his_o right_n to_o she_o but_o we_o have_v all_o do_v ill_o in_o sit_v still_o and_o suffer_v a_o foreign_a prince_n to_o expel_v our_o sovereign_n and_o therefore_o object_n upon_o that_o account_n we_o owe_v he_o a_o recompense_n and_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v less_o than_o the_o restore_n of_o he_o 1._o the_o king_n have_v with_o he_o a_o army_n sufficient_a to_o answ._n have_v expel_v the_o prince_n and_o his_o force_n a_o army_n in_o which_o he_o confide_v without_o summon_v other_o private_a person_n to_o come_v under_o his_o standard_n or_o to_o arm_v on_o his_o behalf_n and_o if_o some_o of_o they_o forsake_v he_o and_o he_o dare_v not_o adventure_v to_o head_n the_o rest_n against_o his_o enemy_n what_o be_v that_o to_o the_o main_a body_n of_o the_o nation_n or_o to_o such_o as_o now_o refuse_v the_o oath_n but_o 2._o it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o as_o thing_n than_o stand_v we_o be_v bind_v to_o fight_v for_o the_o king_n subject_n be_v not_o oblige_v to_o defend_v their_o king_n his_o crown_n and_o dignity_n when_o he_o make_v it_o impossible_a for_o they_o to_o do_v it_o without_o apparent_a ruin_n to_o the_o nation_n if_o we_o have_v at_o that_o time_n enable_v the_o king_n to_o drive_v the_o prince_n of_o orange_n out_o of_o the_o nation_n we_o must_v have_v accept_v of_o the_o child_n as_o a_o genuine_a prince_n of_o w._n without_o ever_o inquire_v into_o his_o birth_n and_o have_v bid_v good-night_n to_o all_o our_o right_n both_o civil_a and_o religious_a and_o this_o be_v the_o case_n if_o we_o may_v not_o assist_v the_o prince_n however_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o assist_v the_o king_n so_o that_o in_o sit_v still_o we_o have_v do_v no_o wrong_n and_o therefore_o have_v no_o satisfaction_n to_o make_v nor_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v say_v justify_v cromwell_n and_o his_o usurpation_n or_o any_o of_o the_o illegal_a power_n that_o be_v about_o that_o time_n set_v up_o for_o as_o to_o cromwell_n and_o what_o i_o say_v against_o he_o will_v equal_o affect_v those_o other_o usurpation_n 1._o he_o be_v a_o subject_a and_o therefore_o ought_v not_o for_o any_o provocation_n then_o give_v to_o have_v rebel_v against_o his_o sovereign_n much_o less_o to_o have_v hold_v on_o the_o war_n when_o the_o parliament_n have_v vote_v his_o concession_n satisfactory_a they_o must_v be_v extraordinary_a circumstance_n that_o will_v justify_v a_o subject_n fight_v against_o his_o prince_n it_o be_v certain_a no_o illegal_a administration_n that_o be_v tolerable_a will_n because_o the_o mischief_n of_o civil_a war_n be_v so_o great_a that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v out-ballanced_n with_o such_o i_o think_v however_o less_o will_v not_o do_v it_o than_o that_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o the_o prince_n endeavour_v to_o overthrow_v the_o great_a end_n of_o government_n and_o that_o without_o be_v resist_v he_o will_v in_o all_o humane_a probability_n effect_v his_o purpose_n i_o do_v not_o say_v this_o will_v do_v it_o for_o i_o meddle_v not_o with_o the_o argument_n but_o i_o think_v however_o less_o than_o this_o will_v not_o do_v it_o and_o there_o be_v nothing_o of_o this_o to_o justify_v the_o do_n of_o that_o wicked_a traitor_n and_o therefore_o 2._o he_o ought_v not_o to_o have_v make_v use_n of_o his_o success_n against_o that_o best_a of_o man_n who_o be_v always_o a_o very_a tolerable_a prince_n and_o who_o experience_n have_v teach_v to_o amend_v such_o error_n as_o have_v be_v commit_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o his_o reign_n even_o before_o the_o war_n break_v
