a_o exact_a relation_n of_o the_o last_o news_n from_o the_o quarter_n of_o his_o excellency_n the_o lord_n general_n of_o the_o scottish_a army_n date_v from_o sunderland_n march_v 12._o 1643._o full_o relate_v every_o day_n passage_n from_o their_o pass_v over_o the_o river_n of_o tine_n their_o take_n of_o sunderland_n and_o a_o vast_a quantity_n of_o coal_n appertain_v to_o delinquent_n with_o proposition_n to_o the_o city_n of_o london_n for_o the_o send_v out_o ship_n for_o coal_n from_o thence_o and_o sundry_a other_o proceed_n of_o that_o army_n in_o their_o march_v towards_o duresme_fw-fr and_o in_o manage_v the_o siege_n against_o newcastle_n from_o february_n 27._o to_o march_v 12._o 1643._o print_a for_o l._n blairlock_n and_o be_v to_o be_v sell_v at_o his_o shop_n near_o temple-bar_n 1644._o sjr_n it_o have_v not_o be_v want_n of_o good_a will_n but_o of_o leisure_n and_o opportunity_n to_o accomplish_v my_o promise_n whereto_o i_o oblige_v myself_o when_o i_o part_v with_o you_o i_o wish_v you_o know_v how_o often_o i_o have_v fancy_v thankfulness_n to_o you_o in_o my_o mind_n for_o that_o great_a favour_n i_o find_v from_o you_o but_o a_o stranger_n to_o i_o pardon_v my_o inability_n hitherto_o and_o accept_v of_o this_o enclose_a account_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o this_o army_n and_o of_o the_o affair_n of_o it_o i_o be_o put_v into_o much_o hastiness_n otherwise_o i_o may_v add_v much_o of_o circumstance_n and_o relation_n of_o sundry_a other_o matter_n for_o the_o present_a you_o may_v know_v that_o we_o be_v master_n of_o a_o vast_a quantity_n of_o coal_n belong_v to_o this_o port_n most_o of_o it_o appertain_v to_o delinquent_n which_o will_v be_v i_o hope_v a_o comfortable_a supply_n to_o london_n but_o if_o you_o have_v any_o friend_n that_o intend_v hither_o for_o coal_n advise_v they_o to_o bring_v some_o provision_n for_o the_o army_n especial_o six-shilling_n beer_n hay_o or_o oat_n the_o army_n be_v this_o day_n march_v towards_o the_o enemy_n at_o duresme_fw-fr and_o his_o excellency_n intend_v to_o visit_v they_o if_o they_o will_v stay_v by_o it_o the_o english_a commissioner_n intend_v to_o remain_v here_o till_o it_o please_v god_n we_o can_v get_v newcastle_n which_o by_o god_n blessing_n either_o when_o the_o enemy_n army_n now_o in_o the_o field_n be_v defeat_v or_o the_o weather_n a_o little_o warm_a will_v be_v sudden_o sunderland_n march_v 12_o 1643._o sir_n i_o be_o your_o very_a affectionate_a friend_n w._n r._n a_o exact_a account_n of_o the_o scot_n pass_v over_o the_o river_n tine_n take_v of_o sunderland_n and_o other_o proceed_n with_o the_o present_a condition_n of_o the_o scot_n army_n from_o the_o 27._o of_o february_n till_o the_o 12._o of_o march_n 1643._o it_o be_v resolve_v as_o most_o conducible_a to_o our_o affair_n that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o this_o army_n shall_v pass_v the_o river_n tyne_n that_o so_o we_o may_v the_o better_o understand_v what_o course_n the_o enemy_n mean_v to_o take_v and_o do_v according_o on_o the_o 28._o of_o febr._n with_o 15._o regiment_n of_o foot_n and_o 6._o regiment_n of_o horse_n we_o pass_v the_o river_n tyne_n at_o several_a ford_n near_a bywell_n and_o oringham_n which_o if_o we_o have_v not_o do_v that_o day_n the_o sudden_a alteration_n of_o the_o weather_n have_v make_v it_o for_o some_o time_n impossible_a to_o we_o leave_v behind_o 5._o regiment_n of_o foot_n and_o some_o troop_n of_o horse_n under_o command_n of_o sir_n james_n lumsdaine_n general_n major_a of_o the_o force_n on_o the_o other_o side_n tyne_n after_o we_o have_v pass_v tyne_n we_o find_v the_o river_n of_o darwen_n so_o high_a by_o the_o sudden_a thaw_n that_o only_o half_a of_o the_o army_n can_v pass_v it_o on_o thursday_n the_o other_o part_n be_v force_v to_o stay_v till_o friday_n when_o they_o also_o pass_v over_o with_o the_o carriage_n and_o so_o we_o direct_v our_o march_n towards_o sunderland_n it_o be_v very_o necessary_a for_o supply_v of_o the_o army_n and_o receive_v intelligence_n that_o we_o shall_v have_v that_o haven_n secure_v near_o which_o we_o come_v on_o saturday_n night_n march_v the_o second_o and_o rest_v the_o lord_n day_n the_o enemy_n cross_v the_o river_n and_o leave_v it_o so_o we_o enter_v on_o monday_n without_o strike_v one_o blow_n in_o this_o march_n from_o tine_n to_o sunderland_n notwithstanding_o the_o many_o straight_a and_o disadvantageous_a passage_n which_o be_v so_o narrow_a that_o sometime_o the_o people_n be_v constrain_a to_o march_v one_o by_o one_o as_o in_o a_o string_n and_o if_o god_n have_v give_v our_o enemy_n heart_n we_o may_v either_o have_v be_v cut_v in_o piece_n or_o stop_v but_o we_o find_v no_o opposition_n from_o the_o enemy_n and_o scarce_o obtain_v a_o sight_n of_o they_o only_o a_o body_n of_o horse_n appear_v upon_o our_o rear_n at_o our_o pass_v over_o the_o river_n of_o weare_n at_o new-bridge_n but_o interrupt_v we_o not_o we_o remain_v in_o our_o quarter_n on_o monday_n and_o tuesday_n take_v what_o care_n we_o can_v for_o supply_v of_o provision_n in_o this_o enemy_n country_n for_o so_o we_o find_v it_o not_o receive_v any_o intelligence_n or_o willing_a supply_n from_o they_o but_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n we_o find_v not_o many_o friend_n when_o there_o be_v so_o few_o man_n the_o whole_a country_n be_v in_o arm_n either_o willing_o or_o force_o so_o great_a a_o power_n have_v the_o cathedral_n here_o on_o wednesday_n the_o six_o of_o march_n the_o enemy_n have_v unite_v their_o force_n and_o receive_v a_o accession_n of_o strength_n by_o sir_n charles_n lucas_n who_o bring_v 21._o troop_n from_o yorkshire_n and_o by_o 1500._o foot_n from_o cumberland_n they_o draw_v their_o force_n to_o a_o place_n about_o two_o or_o three_o mile_n to_o the_o west_n of_o sunderland_n and_o show_v themselves_o upon_o the_o top_n of_o wormehill_n this_o army_n be_v according_o draw_v forth_o and_o both_o lay_v at_o about_o half_a a_o mile_n distance_n on_o wednesday_n night_n in_o the_o field_n on_o thursday_n morning_n they_o be_v again_o draw_v up_o something_o near_a the_o enemy_n still_o keep_v to_o the_o advantage_n of_o his_o ground_n upon_o the_o hill_n so_o that_o notwithstanding_o the_o nearness_n of_o some_o part_n of_o both_o army_n be_v not_o above_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o mile_n distant_a we_o can_v not_o without_o very_o great_a disadvantage_n engage_v this_o army_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o impassable_a hedge_n and_o ditch_n betwixt_o we_o so_o that_o likewise_o after_o the_o army_n have_v face_v each_o other_o that_o day_n they_o remain_v in_o the_o field_n that_o night_n also_o on_o friday_n morning_n some_o little_a skirmish_n there_o be_v betwixt_o some_o small_a party_n of_o horse_n wherein_o that_o little_a advantage_n that_o be_v fall_v to_o we_o take_v some_o few_o prisoner_n by_o who_o we_o understand_v that_o they_o have_v on_o thursday_n night_n draw_v off_o their_o canon_n and_o withdraw_v their_o foot_n and_o leave_v a_o full_a body_n of_o horse_n which_o face_v we_o in_o the_o morning_n till_o about_o ten_o of_o the_o clock_n and_o then_o take_v the_o advantage_n of_o a_o very_a thick_a storm_n of_o snow_n which_o last_v two_o or_o three_o hour_n and_o in_o as_o sore_a a_o manner_n sure_a as_o ever_o be_v see_v march_v away_o and_o this_o army_n through_o the_o illness_n of_o the_o weather_n and_o way_n render_v uncapable_a of_o pursue_v they_o also_o have_v so_o great_a a_o strength_n of_o horse_n in_o the_o rear_n and_o we_o not_o supply_v with_o provision_n to_o 〈◊〉_d whereupon_o 〈◊〉_d friday_n night_n this_o army_n return_v to_o their_o quarter_n we_o since_o understand_v by_o good_a hand_n that_o the_o enemy_n lie_v in_o the_o field_n two_o night_n be_v almost_o as_o bad_a as_o a_o battle_n to_o they_o many_o of_o their_o man_n and_o horse_n die_v but_o more_o run_v away_o we_o likewise_o sustain_v some_o little_a loss_n by_o the_o extremity_n of_o the_o weather_n but_o nothing_o near_o they_o we_o hear_v they_o lose_v eight_o hundred_o horse_n one_o way_n or_o other_o these_o two_o night_n they_o be_v now_o in_o durham_n and_o this_o army_n as_o yet_o about_o sunderland_n only_o seven_o regiment_n be_v for_o the_o enlarge_n the_o quarter_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o want_n of_o provision_n on_o the_o north_n side_n of_o the_o river_n of_o weare_n towards_o newcastle_n the_o enemy_n on_o friday_n night_n cut_v the_o new-bridge_n but_o it_o can_v be_v little_a disadvantage_n to_o this_o army_n which_o be_v now_o supply_v with_o some_o provision_n which_o come_v happy_o yesterday_o in_o two_o ship_n with_o meal_n from_o scotland_n and_o captain_n carres_n ship_n of_o cheese_n and_o butter_n from_o london_n will_v march_v to_o morrow_n be_v the_o 12._o of_o march_n upon_o some_o design_n not_o certain_o know_v by_o any_o but_o the_o chief_a commander_n the_o lord_n go_v along_o with_o they_o finis_fw-la this_o be_v license_v and_o enter_v according_a to_o order_n
